October Foods In Season Brought To You By: RecipeThis.com
Introduction: Welcome to our October in season Podcast here at RecipeThis.com. Our first thought when it comes to October is how peaceful everywhere is. The tourists have totally calmed down and we have swapped the families visiting on their summer holidays in exchange for the over 50’s heading over for the winter sun. The weather has dropped to about 24 degrees and it is the first time in months when we need a jumper on during the cooler October evenings. From a food point of view it is all about the comfort food. We want to be lazy, we want to have Netflix Marathons in our pyjamas and we want to eat lots of pasta, rice and chocolate while doing so. We also love to have apple pie, pumpkin pie and chicken and leek pie. Clearly anything that involves a pie! Another favourite in the Milner house is lots of different meals from a whole pumpkin while they are in season.
October Foods In Season Let’s start our foods in season for October and let’s see what is in season around the world and what you can buy right now to be able to a) eat wholesomely b) eat frugally. Foods In Season #1 – Apples
Apples are back for another month as apples just rock our world in autumn. They are full of flavour and are just asking to be made into an apple crumble or an apple pie. Apple Recipe Suggestions Let’s start with this delicious strawberry apple crumble from Sweet Peas & Saffron. It is great alternative to a traditional apple crumble and I could eat this all day! After this I would also suggest:
• Apple Coffee Cup Muffins • Cinnamon Apple Blondies • 3 Ingredient Crockpot Apple Sauce • Gluten Free Cranberry Apple Crisp Foods In Season #2 – Plums
We had nectarines and apricots from the fruit stone family in our September in season Podcast, so no surprise that the theme will carry on this month with some delicious in season plums.
Plum Recipe Suggestions For a delicious breakfast, why not start the day off in style with Erin’s Plum Crunch Steel Cut Oats? After this I would also suggest: • Overnight Butter
Crockpot
• Plum Turnovers • Plum BBQ Sauce • Plum Cobbler Foods In Season #3 – Pears

If apples are in season that it goes without saying, that pears will be back in season too. They are also featured for the second month in a row, so get those pears and apples out and lets have a fruit party. Pear Recipe Suggestions I just look at this Spiced Pear & Cranberry Coffee Cake and it makes me want to start buying coffee more. After this I would also suggest: • Autumn Spice Pear Cobbler • Pear Chips • Pear Tart • Onion & Pear Jam Foods In Season #4 – Pepper
Someone mentions peppers and I am there. Whether it is green, red, yellow or orange I want them all. I want them in salads, in omelettes, in pasta and best of all in my Chinese food. If you cook with peppers then the chances are that your meal will include tomatoes too. Tomatoes is my favourite food. I could cook with it everyday given the chance. It is just SO SO GOOD. After this I would also suggest: • Homemade Tomato Ketchup • Hearty Brazilian Potatoes • Whole30 Carrot Pasta • No Cook Stuffed Tomatoes Foods In Season #6 – Turnip
Moving onto vegetables it has to start in October with turnip. A delicious winter root vegetable that is perfect baked in the oven in a delicious sauce or served with your meat and potatoes. Turnip Recipe Suggestions

Runner beans are a fantastic staple to the autumn diet. They have a great flavour, cook so well simply with just some oil and make you wish you ate them more often. Runner Bean Recipe Suggestions Whether you call them runner beans or green beans, then you must start with this simple garlicky stir fry. It is from Kalyns Kitchen and I love her wholesome low carb cooking. After this I would also suggest: • Ginger Steak, Green Beans
Asparagus
• Lemon Garlic Chicken • Green Beans With Mushrooms • Roasted Green Beanns Foods In Season #8 – Sweet Potato

We have featured sweet potatoes before and we are going back for a second helping because they are the BEST. Not as much a heavy carb compared to the white potato or the red potato and taste so good with a little olive oil. A perfect use of leftovers and so comforting for these colder months when you MUST EAT pasta. After this I would also suggest: • Popcorn Sweet Potato
• Sweet Potato Fries • Sweet Potato Wedges • Mexican Nachos & Sweet Potato Chips Foods In Season #9 – Pumpkin
October (or Halloween as we would say) would not be the same without the trusted pumpkin. Served in many ways including pumpkin pie, pumpkin stew, pumpkin fries and pumpkin pizza it is a family in season pleaser at this time of the year.
Pumpkin Recipe Suggestions Whenever I am talking about pumpkin these Paleo Pumpkin Muffins are always included. And that is because they taste good, they are healthy and they are easy to make. Crockpot Apple Butter Welcome to our Crockpot Apple Butter. A simple recipe for the crockpot that I just love making with my seasonal apples. This is the kind of recipe I bought a crockpot for as I love the dump and forget way of slow cooking.
Author: RecipeThis.com Serves: 4 Preparation time: 4 Minutes Cooking time: 13 Minutes
Ingredients: • • • • • •
Crockpot 2.5 Kilos Apples 1 Kilo Sugar 2Tbsp Cinnamon Pinch of Salt Pinch of Nutmeg
Method: 1. Peel and thinly dice the apples and place them in the crockpot.
2. Combine the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. 3. Pour over apples in the crockpot and mix well. 4. Cook on high for an hour and then stir, decrease to low and cook for 10 hours or until they are thickened and dark brown. 5. Uncover and cook on low for a further 1 hour without the lid on. 6. Mix with a blender until smooth and then allow to cool. 7. Spoon into freezer containers and freeze for later.
Notes: I also like to do the same with peaches, plums or pears. You can use any kind of apples, but if you are doing Granny Smiths then make sure you double the sugar otherwise it will be really bitter. The apple weight is before we have peeled and diced them, not after.
That’s A Wrap Thanks for listening to our Podcast and don’t forget how easy it is to transform your dinner plate to include lots of seasonal produce. It is a great way to get excited about what is in season and to vary what you eat for dinner and to get your kids excited about fresh local food.
