Food truck open for business in Southington

SOUTHINGTON A food truck two years in the making opened last month on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike offering a host of sandwiches and smoothie bowls.

Amy Olmstead, a Wolcott resident, finished work on her truck That Hits the Spot this summer and opened at 1608 Meriden-Watebury Turnpike.

With vegan and gluten-free options along with a meatladen sandwich called the Heart Stopper, Olmstead and her four daughters are looking to offer a place where everyone will find something delicious.

“I wanted people to be able to come to my truck and a vegan would be able to have an option that’s just as delicious,” Olmstead said.

Smoothie bowls, heart stoppers

That Hits the Spot is open for breakfast and lunch Tuesdays to Saturdays. Offerings include classic egg sandwiches, smoothie bowls with fresh fruit, and the Bacon Me Crazy sandwich which many customers want on a glazed donut.

The Heart Stopper, a customer favorite, has pastrami, bacon, chorizo, salami, ham provolone cheese and sauteed onions.

Olmstead said even with that sandwich, she chooses meats and cheeses without soy protein filler and wants to serve only quality ingredients.

“I keep a very healthy, clean truck because that’s what I like to eat, what I like to give my kids,” she said.

A family effort

Olmstead has worked at The Muffin Factory in Southington and as a private cook for a couple with strict dietary needs. Her gluten-free offerings accommodate those with Celiac disease and similar gluten intolerances. Working multiple jobs made Olmstead realize that she wanted more control over her work. “I’m a single mom with four girls. I was always working. I was working two, sometimes three, jobs at a time. I wasn't really seeing my kids like I want to,” she said.

Since opening three weeks ago, she’s been working with her daughters Dorothy, Vanessa, Rebekah and Charlette who are home from school or university or who help out after other jobs. Each daughter has a sandwich named after her.

“They all pitch in,” Olmstead said. “They’re great, I really couldn’t do it without them.”

She’s hoping to get the food truck established enough to

hire help once her daughters are in school in the fall. Olmstead’s truck is on land owned by Beacon Electric but she has her eye on other properties with better parking and where she won’t have to get power from a generator. The company has been great, she said, but also has long-term plans for the property so she’ll eventually need to find another spot.

Food truck destination

Marty DiVito bought property at 2156 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike and opened up his food truck three years ago. He’s glad to see other trucks or restaurants open up, saying more options draws more customers and is good for all owners.

“I hope we see 100 trucks. It’s a cool vibe and I think people will make it a destination,” DiVito said. “I’ve been in this business 40 years now. I believe in variety.”

COMMENTARY: When a bear shows up, show respect

It seems like just about everyone in Connecticut has a story about the time they

saw a bear. Bears show up in all kinds of places. Backyard trampolines and cupcake shops are two unusual recent sightings.

A few years back, Southington had a bear roaming its downtown and a few weeks ago one wandered into downtown Hartford. Apparently, even busy commercial areas are not off limits. Another instance was that time a bear wandered through the automatic doors at Crazy Bruce’s liquor Store in Bristol.

Home break-ins involving bears are another example of bear-human interactions. A bear was euthanized after it broke into a Bloomfield home recently.

A bear biting or otherwise attacking a pet or even a human are the kind of incidents that, although quite See Bear, A8

Grads hear message of resilience from heart transplant survivor

PLAINVILLE – A heart transplant survivor shared his story of resilience at Plainville Community Schools’ Adult and Continuing Education graduation ceremony on June 6.

“I did all the right things, exercised, and ate healthy,” keynote speaker Andrew Jones told attendees. “It was when I went for a run one day and couldn’t catch my breath that I knew something was wrong.”

In 2012, Jones was diagnosed with viral myocarditis, an infection of the heart. Then, that condition led to cardiomyopathy and, eventually, heart failure.

Jones spent months in intensive care and was placed on a heart transplant waiting list. On Sept. 21, 2016, he received his new heart. The donor was a man in his

30s who had died in a motorcycle accident.

Since his transplant, Jones, a New Britain resident, has been on a mission to get people to register as organ and tissue donors. Also, he encourages others to make their health a priority.

Having been so close to death, Jones knows just how precious life is. “Be sure to express your gratitude,” he told the graduates of Plainville’s Adult and Continuing Education program.

Collecting diplomas at the June 6 gathering were Catherine Adamo, Michael Figueroa, Mahin Rana, Joshua Delgado and Nicholas Herdzik. Assistant superintendent of Plainville Public Schools, David Levenduski, presented the diplomas, along with Kelley Whitlock and Jill O’Brien.

The accomplishments of Adult and Continuing Edu-

cation students Carolina Batista, Marta Cucka, Cecilia Ramirez and Radames

Ramos also were celebrated at the event, which was held at Plainville High School.

Plainville Aquifer Protection Area Notification - TIME TO RENEW!

In 2006, the State of Connecticut adopted a new law aimed at protecting our underground drinking water supply. To comply, certain businesses located within aquifer recharge areas that conduct operations listed as being a potential threat to groundwater resources must register with a local Aquifer Protection Agency. By registering and following best management practices, local businesses can continue to operate in accordance with the law.

Businesses that typically need to register include, but are not limited to, gas stations, automotive uses, machine shops, dry cleaning or laundering establishments, and waste processing facilities as well as a wide variety of facilities involving the use of chemicals or hazardous materials including oil and petroleum-based products. The Aquifer Protection Registrations have all since expired and those that have not renewed their registrations have run afoul of the law

The Town of Plainville has no interest in levying the fines that accrue due to non-compliance, however, we all have a vested interest in making sure that local businesses comply with laws established to protect our drinking water supplies for the benefit of everyone in Plainville.

Businesses within the Johnson Avenue well-field in the Northwest corner of Plainville are mostly compliant.

Businesses in the Woodford Avenue well-field are far behind. We have attempted to reach out to some of those businesses but to date have seen only a handful of approximately 80 required registration renewals.

In the end, it is the individual responsibility of each affected business to ensure their compliance with the laws regarding aquifer protection in Plainville and the State of CT.

As can be seen in the accompanying map, the various Aquifer Protection Areas comprise a large percentage of the Town of Plainville.

Businesses that are required to register with the Aquifer Protection Agency and have not yet done so have until September 29, 2023 to do so. After that date, regulated businesses will cease to operate lawfully. The Town of Plainville encourages you to protect your business interests by registering with the Aquifer Protection Agency if required. Doing so will allow you to continue to operate legally.

For assistance in determining if you must renew your registration, please visit the Town of Plainville’s website at www.plainvillect.com. Look for the link entitled “Aquifer Protection Information” on the Town Government Section on the home page. You may also call 860-793-0221, Ext. 7177 to learn if you have an expired registration.

Appointed principal by the Plainville Board of Education in a unanimous vote, DeLorenzo started in her new role on July 1.

DeLorenzo holds a bachelor of science degree from Providence College, a master of science education degree from Walden University, and a sixth year certification from Sacred Heart University.

She is a member of the National Educators Association, the Connecticut High School Coaches Association and the

National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Plainville High’s new leadership also includes Kelly Hickey. A counselor at PHS since 2013, Hickey has been named assistant principal at the school. She too began her new job on July 1.

In June, Plainville’s outgoing superintendent Steven LePage said DeLorenzo and Hickey are “outstanding choices for the school leadership positions at Plainville High School.”

“Their combined experiences in serving children in multiple ways and from varied backgrounds will combine

and be of great benefit to students,” LePage added. “I’m optimistic for the continued and expanded excellence at Plainville High School in the future, and wish them both the absolute best in their leadership journeys.”

Before arriving in Plainville, Hickey served as a school counseling intern and gradu-

ation interventionist at Middletown High School and at the city’s Woodrow Wilson Middle School.

At Plainville High, she has served on several committees, and in many additional capacities, including as Edgenuity coordinator, homebound tutor coordinator, and as co-coach of the Unified Sports program.

Hickey holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Connecticut, a master of school counseling degree from Central Connecticut State University and a sixth year certification from Quinnipiac University.

uncommon, are stark reminders that as amusing as bears may seem to us these are wild animals.

Some weigh up to 400 pounds, they’re often hungry, might have cubs to protect and are trying to survive in an ever shrinking habitat.

State statistics reveal that there were more than 10,500 bear sightings in 2022 and

more than 3,600 reports of damage that year. According to a story in The Connecticut Mirror, that’s an all time high.

The legislature is looking at how to handle this situation. A hunt was discussed and while that’s not currently on the table, other solutions are. The Mirror outlined the status of what the Senate passed along to the House. The proposed bill would allow farmers to get a bear hunting permit to prevent crop or livestock de-

struction. Intentional feeding of bears would be banned and there would be penalties.

Are any other ideas being explored by wildlife scientists? Could feeding stations in deep woods reduce bears scavenging in neighborhoods? Could some young bears be selected for neutering to reduce the population?

Six bears, a gang that appeared to be one adult and five yearlings, wandered through my yard not long ago and loitered in the neighborhood, scavenging for food in several trash bins at nearby houses. A visit by bears always causes excitement and what occurred during this incident demonstrates some of the reasons the growing bear

population is cause for concern.

One guy tried to pat a young bear as it climbed his stockade fence, the bear hissed and the man backed off. A work-from-home mom came out in the yard with her two young kids to see the bears the animals roamed just a few feet from the steps where the family stood.

Another neighbor kept raking leaves as a bear pulled bags out of a nearby trash can. I tried to get a photo of that bear and took one step too close, causing the bear to lurch towards me, hissing, and sending me running back into the house. Later, I heard how one resident tried to hand feed a bear, sticking a hand out a backdoor with

food as the bear passed by. What’s described here is not a bear problem so much as it is a human problem. Every single action taken was not smart (also known as stupid) and we knew better or should have. DEEP has done a lot to educate people on how to live with bears. It’s up to us to internalize that information.

A bear sighting sends adrenaline soaring. It is thrilling and terrifying all at once to see these magnificent animals in our midst. While dangerous human-bear encounters may require a forceful response, including killing the animal, it’s up to humans to do all they can to prevent that outcome.

As that wise Plainville resident did, we all need to step back, reduce contact and let the bears be.

Meriden man, 19, charged with murder in stabbing death

Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN A Melville Avenue man faces murder charges following a standoff with police hours after authorities say he fatally stabbed a man on Hanover Road.

Josue Ortega-Torres, 19, is being held in lieu of $5 million bond on the murder charge after police say he stabbed Justin Sloan Sr. at around 6:20 p.m. Saturday in the roadway of the 800 block of Hanover Road. Sloan, 44, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation led to Ortega-Torres as a suspect and he was taken into custody after a several hour standoff at his residence on Melville

Avenue. The Meriden Police Department Negotiation Team with the assistance of the Patrol Division, and the Meriden S.W.A.T. team helped facilitate Ortega-Torres’ surrender, according to police.

Assisting in the arrest were Wallingford, Cheshire, Southington and Middletown police, along with state police.

Meriden police referred to the incident as a “senseless act” and offered condolences to Sloan’s family.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact Det. Jad Hadir at jhadir@ meridenct.gov or 203-6306250.

A Question & Answer session will immediately follow the presentation.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide the community an opportunity to learn about the proposed project and allow an open discussion of any views and comments concerning the proposed improvements.

The purpose of the project is to construct a multi-use trail known as the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail (FCHT) through the Town of Plainville to close a 5-mile gap in the Connecticut section of trail. The Connecticut share of the FCHT consists of a 54-mile section connecting New Haven through Suffield, terminating at the Massachusetts border. The entirety of the Connecticut trail section is either complete, in construction, or approaching final design, excluding the remaining 5-mile gap in the Town of Plainville. The 5-mile gap is proposed to be closed in three (3) project phases. Phase 2 includes construction of two (2) miles of multi-use trail between Route 72 and Northwest Drive.

There are right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements. Construction will require twelve (12) partial property acquisitions on both Town-owned and private properties. All acquired property will be transferred to the Town upon project completion and following a Property Letter with Acceptance.

Construction is anticipated to begin in Fall 2025, based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permit(s). The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $15.5 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with eighty percent (80%) Federal funds and twenty percent (20%) State funds.

“Filumena.” His largest role, however, was as Bishop and the understudy for Javert in the Broadway and national tour of “Les Misérables” from 2017-2020.

Before arriving in Southington, Love grew up in Calgary, Canada. At a young age, he took part in perfor-

mance choir and theater, sparking his love for performing. After high school Love wanted to become a choral conductor, but one of his teachers set him on the path toward another career altogether.

“I had a vocal teacher tell me that I would be really, really good at singing opera. And I didn't really even like opera at the time. I was like, really? But I started trying it and I ended up really enjoy-

ing it. And so I started doing some auditions and I got accepted into this program where I'm from in Calgary Opera,” Love said. “The Calgary Opera program was gonna pay me to study opera with them for a year. It changed everything for me because, after that year, I was fully into the opera world.”

Since then Love has bounced between productions, most of them in the Canadian theater and opera circuits. Eventually he got the opportunity to audition for a “Les Misérables” production in Toronto, which spun off into a Broadway

tour. Following the end of the production in 2020 due to the pandemic, Love ended up settling down in Connecticut and getting married.

Connecticut was the natural choice for him, said Love, as he and his partner met when he was on tour in Hartford, and he naturally came back often to visit him.

“The COVID shutdowns allowed me a chance to sort of reflect on where I'm at now. Do I want to be able to do the thing where I drop everything to run wherever a gig pops up, or do I want to start putting down some

roots and sort of pick and choose where I want to perform when that opportunity comes up?” Love said.

Once established in the area, Love wanted to dabble in vocal coaching. Seeing the number of theaters, drama schools, and programs in the area, Love believed he could add his voice to the talent in the area.

Getting a space at SoCCA was an opportunity that ultimately fit with Love’s vision for his studio, seeing as SoCCA is a tentpole for arts in the community.

“It just kind of fell into my lap and it's been such a huge change for my little business here because it's such a great coming-together place for this community around the arts. It's kind of our only arts and cultural building in the town of Southington that I'm aware of. It's got a little bit of everything,” Love said. “There's so many theater companies, there's so many community theaters, professional theaters. There are so many schools with really wellknown programs. And I thought the level of talent in this area is just so high, I'm sure that I can lend my voice to that sort of community and help them in any way I can. ”

The organizers at SoCCA are thrilled to have Love as an addition to their space, being able to touch on a facet of artistic expression beyond their usual lineup of crafts programs.

Love has offered lessons to people of all ages, from teenagers looking to find their voice to 70-year-olds looking to tap into their passion for music as well.

“I just think it's just one more form of art that we added that we would've never had the opportunity had he not like, walked through our door,” SoCCA Executive Director Diann Thomson said, praising how Love has encouraged students to find their own voices.

He’s suggested Olmstead’s truck to some of his customers looking for something different. While DiVito hasn’t been up the road to That Hits the Spot yet, he plans to and has talked with Olmstead about the business.

“I’ve been trying to help her out. Sweetheart, hard worker, ” DiVito said.

Olmstead said both DiVito and the owners of the Godfather Pizza truck helped her get started and encouraged her.

“(DiVito) let me ask him 1,001 questions. He was a huge supporter,” Olmstead said.

He spends the off season in Florida and said small-scale food truck parks are popular there. Some areas have a half-dozen trucks along with tables and music.

“People make it a destination,” DiVito said.

“He encouraged them to get better, which is what we do in art,” Thomson said. “It's just a good addition, I think. And he's just a really genuinely nice person.”

Love’s lessons go beyond just singing, but finding confidence in one’s own voice. He is pleased that his sessions give people the opportunity to find that confidence, and that he’s able to make an impact in the local arts community.

“We connect with our world a lot with the voice. Those of us who have the ability to speak and have the ability to sing, we use it every day to connect with our world. And if you don't love your voice, if you're kind of ashamed of your voice, um, or if you are fearful, it can be a great hindrance to your ability to communicate,” he said. “I feel like it's a way for me to help people and whether that's just in front of a board meeting, if that's in on the phone, if that's leaving your outgoing voicemail message, and you just wanna feel more confident than that. I think with each of my students, I'm able to sort of, with a sense of humor, and respect, and openness, I'm able to sort of help people feel like this is a safe place to explore.”
