Focus … This word has several definitions in relation to a group of individuals who share common goals; for example Red Angus breeders. The following meanings were found for “focus” in the context of our Association.

• Close or narrow attention; concentration • Zero in on; to focus one’s attention on a specific person, proposal, issue or other matter; to aim at; to set one’s sights on.

• A point upon which attention, activity, etc., is directed or concentrated.

Our question is, “Where does RAAA need to direct its focus?” The U.S. cattle herd shrank to the smallest size in 53 years. Yet the pounds of beef available for consumers is virtually unchanged. This happened primarily because of increased efficiencies in production. With the current shrinking beef cowherd size, the focus is to increase market share and expand/maintain placement of Red Angus seedstock into the nation’s commercial cowherd.

My mother always makes a cake for each family member on his or her birthday, and that family member gets a cake of their choosing. My personal favorite is Red Velvet and, believe me, my mother can bake a wonderful cake. However, Mom has noticed that my waist size has expanded and thinks if she bakes a smaller cake it will be better for me. What naturally happens is the size of my slice of cake increases to equal the serving size which was responsible for my waistline in the first place. As the beef cow herd shrinks, Red Angus needs to carve a wide slice of commercial market share to remain successful in an increasingly competitive market for beef genetics.

RAAA’s staff and Board of Directors are focused on increasing Red Angus’ market share. With a reduced total U.S. cowherd (smaller cake) we must continually find

way to “widen our slice.” We need tools that can make our customers more successful through their selection of Red Angus seedstock. These tools will come in the form of multi-breed EPDs, a new database/registry system and genomic enhancement of EPDs. The new database is a necessity – the old one is now in its third decade and has been patched beyond belief. The new database will be open source and web-based to develop useful tools for Red Angus producers and stakeholders. The ability to adapt to the ever-changing technology of the future will be greatly enhanced with the new system. Patience is something we will need as the change from old to new takes place.

Our cooperation with American Simmental Association in multi-breed genetic evaluation has given the Red Angus stakeholders the ability to compare animals of different breeds and breed percentages with unequaled accuracy. With over ten million animal records, the multi-breed database is a powerful tool for genetic prediction.

Technology is changing the way many cattlemen choose seedstock for use in their herds. Genomic enhanced EPDs can provide increased accuracy earlier in younger animals and allow producers to make better informed decisions about which young cattle to buy or retain for their own use.

RAAA’s cooperation with other breeds, as well as industry and academic partners, has delivered DNA technology that can increase our selection accuracy and ultimately increase efficiency in producing reliable seedstock.

More than ever, Red Angus’ “focus” needs to be supplying a larger portion of the very competitive beef seedstock market. Our slice of smaller cake must get wider and larger to maintain growth in our Red Angus cowherd and increase the relevance of our Red Angus breed. ■

What’s in a registration paper?

I expect that most ranchers never spend a great deal of time pondering the registration papers that arrive in their mailbox the late spring and summer after bull sale season. I would venture further to guess that some ranchers have even said, “I don’t need the papers,” when negotiating the bull purchases. Perhaps this is because they think they might cheapen up the bulls by saving the seedstock producer the transfer costs, (which actually does not incur any charge if the transfer is completed within 60 days of the sale). On the other end of the spectrum, some cow-calf producers would prefer a paperless inventory to help manage their bull battery.

Whatever importance producers place on the “papers” the day they buy the bull(s) or the day those papers arrive in the mail, chances are, most never stop to think about what goes into that paper. If their receipt is the result of a Red Angus bull purchase, the paper(s) are constructed of added-value fibers.

For instance …

Look at the pedigree. The sire, dam and grandparents are most certainly the product of mandatory Total Herd Reporting (THR). Chances are even most of the great grandparents are too. While other breeds have implemented various versions of whole herd reporting in recent years, most do not mandate it, and none have been at it for multiple generations of cattle like Red Angus. THR is important to our commercial bull customers because it requires reporting the progeny of every cow in the herd – including the cows that didn’t breed.

Such failures in the cow will show in the form of lower Stayability (STAY) EPDs in the bulls you evaluate.

Feel the weight of the paper (or look at it on your computer monitor if you choose the paperless route). You are holding a piece of the world’s largest multi-breed beef cattle database, representing over 11 million animal records. Multi-breed databases and the resultant genetic evaluation are the key to simplified crossbreeding systems. The EPDs built from such databases are equally reliable and relevant regardless of a rancher’s breeding strategy: • Target high-quality Natural grids with Red Angus bulls on British-cross cows.

• Target F1 replacement heifer markets by combining Red Angus with maternal Continental breeds such as Simmental or Gelbvieh.

• Target ¾ British, ¼ Continental feeders to

combine Quality and Yield premiums by using Red Angus x Continental hybrids on Angus-based commercial herds.

• Make drought-resistant replacements by using Red Angus x Hereford hybrid bulls on Red brockle-faced cows.

The “weight” of your paper is the same, regardless of your breeding program, marketing strategy or the Red Angus breed percentage of the bull whose paper you are holding. Others can run genetic evaluation and produce EPDs for you, but they can’t give you the predictability of being tied to an 11-million head, multi-breed database.

Study the paper closely. See the genetic predictions for STAY (stayability), HPG (heifer pregnancy) and ME (maintenance energy requirement) earning natural premiums by using Red Angus bulls on Britishcross cows. These traits are the cornerstones of cow-calf profits, yet Red Angus is the only one that provides predictions for all of these cost-cutting traits while providing the typical revenue traits available through selection for growth and carcass traits.

Hold the paper in one hand. Now you have room to hold a copy of ARA Magazine in the other. When your seedstock supplier transfers ownership of your bull purchase, you don’t just get the paper. They’ve signed you up for a complimentary one-year subscription to ARA Magazine.

Finally, look at your name on the paper. The customer number associated with your name/ranch name is used to identify your Red Angus or Red Angusinfluenced bull battery, and serves as your gateway to added-value services available free of charge through Red Angus Marketing Programs. Gain Age and Source Premiums or entry into Angus product lines through the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program’s Yellow (FCCP) or Green (Allied Access) tagging options.

Promote your steers to order buyers and feed yards though the Red Angus Feeder Fax, or promote replacement quality heifers through Red Angus Stockyards and FeMail electronic notifications.

And, if you are one of those that doesn’t want to be bothered with maintaining individual registration certificates – no worries, the staff at RAAA will be happy to provide you an EPD report of your entire bull inventory or set up access to view online as needed.

As you can see, there’s a lot that goes into – and even more that comes as standard equipment with – a Red Angus bull’s registration paper. ■

Marketing Update Red Angus customers consistently enjoy the success of marketing their feeder cattle via video sales. A quick review of prices paid will prove that load lot sizes of Red Angus influenced cattle redefine market highs.

However, many bull customers do not have the herd size to access this market option, while other large operations capitalize on the reputation they’ve built with their local livestock market.

Each year, RAAA works with progressive livestock markets across the country to organize Red Angus Feeder Calf Sales designed to leverage the power of volume, by grouping our bull customers’ calves on select days, at specific locations.

These efforts pave the way to higher prices by allowing feeders to com-

pete to fill multiple orders for cattle of like type and kind.

Strategies like documented vaccination protocols, weaned 45 days and utilizing added-value programs like the FCCP and Allied Access, combined with the advantage of marketing in volume, position a customers’ calves to reap the benefits of compet-

Spring 2013 Herd Inventories

It’s time to update your Spring Herd Inventory. We ask that you update your Spring Inventory for the 2013 calving season online under Member Data-REDS. Inventory reports will not be printed and will only be mailed if requested.

Please request the hard copy as soon as possible. Inventories should be returned no later than February 3, 2013, even if there are no changes to report.

Inventories are most accurately updated in January for Spring calving females.

For most members, January is the time between weaning/pregnancy check and before the calving season begins.

Furthermore, the Spring Herd Inventory is important because THR assessments will be billed in July based on the active females (16 mos of age as of January 1) listed on inventory. Each member is billed based on how many cows are on inventory at the beginning of the calving season, not the number of cows that are on inventory at the end of the calving season. The Spring Herd is designated for females that will calve between January 1 and June 30.

Updating the Spring Herd Inventory is the time to take cows off of inventory (sold or died), add cows to inventory and allows members to make breeding management decisions regarding calving seasons (Spring to Fall). Again, your Spring Herd inventory is what determines which cows are billed Spring THR so it is important to clean up inventories before the February deadline.

Ultrasound Data Collection

Barn sheets must be obtained on registered animals for the collection of ultrasound data. If summary data is to be sent to parties other than the owner of the animal(s): example, email or fax to a bull test manager, sales manager, etc. please be sure that special instructions be sent to the lab where the data will be processed. The lab will include those instructions in the email to the National Office with data.

Once ultrasound data is processed by the National Office it is available on the website under Member Data-REDS or it can be printed by owner request.

Tips for completing ultrasound records • Double-check that the Animal IDs, herd prefix and sex are correct.

• Ultrasound data can be collected on bulls between 320 and 440 days-of-age.

• Ultrasound data can be collected on heifers between 320 and 460 days-of-age.

• Contemporary groups for ultrasound are formed at birth. Cattle must be contemporaries at birth, weaning and yearling in order to be contemporaries at ultrasound.

• ET calves do not contemporary together due to the maternal environment effect and thus placed in a single head contemporary group. However, ET calves can be grouped together at ultrasound if they have had the same opportunities throughout birth, weaning and yearling.

Sale Catalog Data Extracts (SCDE)

With spring bull sale season just around the corner, it’s a very busy time. Take advantage of RAAA’s Sale Catalog Data Extract (SCDE). It’s a free service provided by RAAA. An SCDE pulls all relevant data needed to create a sale catalog designed to provide accurate and complete information presented in a consistent manner for customers.

Members can submit a request for an SCDE by emailing an “input file” of registration numbers in a text file or Excel file to scde@redangus.org. An input file must be a single column of registration numbers with or without the associated lot numbers in another column.

We will turn your request around as soon as possible, but guarantee turnaround time is three business days.

Data will be returned to the member in a text output file, or one of two Microsoft Word templates.

Highlights of Past Junior Red Angus Association Members

Kyle Gilchrist

Kyle Gilchrist got his start in the Red Angus business in 1973. When he was nine, his dad, Kenneth, bought he and his sister, Lora, each a show heifer. His interest in the Red Angus breed was “love at first sight”. Kyle joined the National Junior Red Angus Association shortly after and served as Vice President and historian of this organization in the late ‘70s through early ‘80s.

From 1973 – 1981, Kyle exhibited Red Angus cattle at the Van Buren County 4-H show and the Iowa State Fair and developed a deep appreciation for the Red Angus female and particularly the cow-calf classes. For his entire life, Kyle stayed involved in the family farming operation and helped his parents raise corn, beans, hay, pigs and cattle.

From 1983–1985, Kyle attended Iowa State University in Agriculture Science and also pursued another of

his long time dreams of being a Red Angus cattle auctioneer. In December of 1984, he graduated from World Wide College of Auctioneering and embarked on an auction career that has developed into 40–50 auctions each year across the United States.

In 1998, Kyle’s dad retired and they held a complete dispersal of their joint cow herd known as the J Bar K Ranch. Kyle sat out of the cattle business for about a year and half following the dispersal. In 1999, Kyle started his own Red Angus herd as Star G Ranch, Inc. and has produced Red Angus cattle continuously since then. Currently, the Star G herd based in Douds, Iowa, runs 40-50 head of registered cows and sells bulls each March in the Red Alliance Auction in Shawnee, Oklahoma and occasionally sells a few females through a variety of the auctions Kyle manages.

He is married to Lisa Gilchrist and they have four children, Christopher and his wife Brittany, Clayton, Kaya and Chade and one grandson, Kohda. Kyle is probably best known these days as a Red Angus auctioneer and sale manager and can be seen nationally, managing the Denver Mile High Classic Sale, the Reno Bet On Red Sale, the Billings, Montana NILE Sale and the Fort Worth Stock Show Red Angus Classic.

His love of Red Angus cattle continues with a great appreciation of the RAAA membership and the people who work hard every day to make Red Angus the best breed of cattle on the planet. ■

The rich history of Abilene, Kansas was made famous

by, arguably, one of the most popular presidents of the

United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower. Abilene is a popu-

lar historical attraction for people interested in stories of the 34th president’s early years in this Midwest town.

The name “Abilene” itself is derivative of a passage in the New Testament and means “City of the Plains”.

Along with the honor of being the birthplace of the the 34th President of the United States, Abilene also has

historical significance to the cattle industry. Abilene is

considered the first of the railroad cow towns. The cattle drives that began in Texas met great resistance for ranchers looking for marketing opportunities as they made their way north.

Joseph McCoy changed that in

the late 1860’s with the beginning of the cattle “Depot”

of the plains. McCoy’s Great Western Stockyards provided a place to gather and ship cattle by rail.

Brian and Daryl grew up not far from each other.

Their towns were rivals in High School athletics, but because of their respective agriculture backgrounds they were friends. As adults in their 30’s, they decided to become partners in a venture to breed and sell replacement heifers. Having sampled success with some cross-bred heifers, H-F wanted to find the most sought after females. “We were looking for just the right formula,” says Brian. Then in 2003 Daryl and Brian purchased their first set of Red Angus heifers from Nebraska. Now Brian and his wife Cecilia, along with Daryl, his wife Paula and their 15 year old daughter Cheyenne and 13 year old daughter Savannah, operate this successful multi-faceted Red Angus ranch.

The geographical location provides a combination of available feed for the individual enterprises that make up H-F Heifer Development. more than 150 Red Angus heifer calves to breed each year. Cows and calves make use of the range lands and crop residue while heifer calves are prepared for breeding in the feed yard. Brian points out “Red Angus cattle fit and acclimate to any environment at home and for our customers.”

Both heifer calves retained from the ranch cowherd, as well as the purchased heifers are bred.

Consistency is important; Brian and Daryl only purchase heifers enrolled in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). The certified Red Angus tag ensures minimum 50% Red Angus bloodlines, therefore the cattle tend to be more uniform and predictable. “We have experienced more consistency in the Red Angus heifers than other cattle we have purchased in the past,” says Brian. A certain number of bred heifers are retained on the premises to enter the cowherd, the balance of the bred heifers are then offered for sale. This creates a marketing opportunity for female purchasing customers who prefer three year old cows instead of first calf heifers to build or rebuild respective herds. “Breed back on the Red Angus cattle is much higher than other breeds of cattle we have tried in the past,” says Daryl. Marketing bred cows coupled with bred heifer sales increases the number of potential interested buyers.

This unique marketing strategy drives the focus of the breeding program for both bulls purchased to breed mother cows on the ranch, as well as genetics targeted for heifers bred for sale. “The program is founded on developing heifers so there is an obvious

H-F uses more than one marketing avenue to offer bred Red Angus cattle to potential buyers. The current year’s offering might move quickly depending on interest through acquaintances and repeat customers. In order to expand customer base however, Brian and Daryl make use of the marketing tools available through RAAA and list the heifers on the Red Angus stockyards page of the RAAA website every year. Superior Livestock Auction also provides a sound marketing option as a means to reach potential ranchers in search of bred heifers.

Along with the heifers from the herd that are retained for breeding purposes, the steer calves are a separate target market. Just like the heifers, the steers are enrolled in the FCCP and often times kept “AllNatural”. The steers are weaned and started in the feed yard at H-F to allow for an advantage at market time. Fed cattle originating from the ranch in Abilene have been marketed through the Meyer Natural Angus program. In both 2010 and 2011, H-F cattle qualified for a Red Angus Grid Master Award under the All Natural specifications. “With Red Angus cattle we don’t give up carcass quality to get the calving ease and maternal traits for the heifer program,” says Daryl.

Finally, as an additional marketing phase, heifers that do not breed are finished at the H-F yard and sold in a small freezer beef business. The ability of the Red Angus cattle to yield well and grade choice provides high quality beef for customers.

Having the freezer beef outlet in place is dependent upon regularly providing a good eating experience.

The two families that own and operate H-F Heifer Development enjoy the docility of the Red Angus cattle. Customers that purchase the heifers or cows are in search of cattle that are easy to handle and that regularly rebreed on time. Docility is one more reason why Brian and Daryl prefer Red Angus on the ranch as well. Both Cheyenne

and Savannah enjoy working cattle. Daryl says, “it’s fun having good cattle around for the girls to work; it keeps them interested.”

A great deal has changed since the wild and unruly beginnings of Abilene and the cattle that once were trailed from Texas to the Great Western Stockyards.

Do Homework Before Buying Your Next Herd Bull

Now is the time to assess your bull needs for the upcoming breeding season.

Consider bull purchases as an investment into the herd rather than an expense.

Bulls have a greater and longer lasting genetic impact in each herd compared to

females. Bulls produce multiple calves per year. Most cows produce just one calf per year. The genetic impact of each bull used in the herd can be seen for 25 years if replacement heifers are retained.

It is never too late to assess your herd and determine what is needed in terms of bull selection.

Take the time, make initial bull selections on paper using all the performance tools available.

Assess Herd Needs To fully evaluate what your bull needs may be, identify the following: • Identify herd goals by writing down the primary and secondary goals of your cattle operation.

• Identify herd strengths and weaknesses by writing down one to two strengths and one to two weaknesses.

Putting information together from questions 1 and 2 may point you toward specific breeds and traits to emphasize.

• Identify traits that impact your herd profitability. Select no more than five traits to emphasize during the bull selection process.

• Which selection tools to use. A commercial cowherd should be composed of crossbred cows from planned matings. Cross-bred cows add longevity, fertility and increased weaning weights to the herd. All bull selections should be data driven and purchased from reputable sources.

Keep in mind that without good management, your herd will not express its genetic potential. Proper nutrition, herd health and forage management are also key to take advantage of genetic investments.

Do your homework before purchasing Initial bull selections should be data driven. EPDs or Expected Progeny Differences should be used in initial bull selections. Utilizing the goals and traits identified above will establish EPD benchmarks within each bull breed. It is important to know breed EPD averages for important traits and realize EPD values need to

match your environment. The largest or smallest EPD values may or may not be what is best for your herd.

Some breeders and sale catalogs will also provide adjusted weights and ratios. These are great tools to see how that bull performed against other bull calves born in the same herd during the same time period.

However, EPDs have been proven to be the best indicator of the genetic potential of the bull. If you need help understanding or using EPDs, please contact your regional animal science and forage extension agent (www.aces.edulanimalforage).

At the Sale or Farm Once initial bull selections have been made on paper, arrive in plenty of time to visual inspect each bull for structural soundness and overall eye appeal. Do not add any other bulls to the list once you begin visual inspection. All other bulls have already been culled from consideration because of performance reasons.

Carefully inspect each bull from his hooves to his head. Look for structural imperfections such as screw claw, incorrect front and back leg structure, and lack of breed character. Inspect the scrotum. Ensure the bull has two testicles. Make sure he has adequate depth of body, is level between his hooks and pins, displays adequate muscling through the loin and rear quarter and has a level topline. If you are buying private treaty, ask to inspect his dam and sisters, paying attention to their udder characteristics and feet and leg structure.

Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.

Our Ranches

The main cowherd runs in the Yellowstone and Stillwater Valleys and is headquartered on the Miller Ranch in Absarokee, Montana. The 19,000 acre Miller Ranch serves as the home to our 750 head nucleus Red Angus herd as well as our 350 head coop recipient herd. We also maintain an advanced genetics facility in Iowa where we conduct all of our embryo collection and export work.

Our Genetics

We have established a breeding philosophy that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. Our herd sires Expectation and Packer are perfect examples that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes.

Our Bull and Heifer Development

We develop our bulls and replacement females at the Big Sky Development Center conveniently located just off I-90 in Park City, Montana. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 lb ADG with 0.2 of an inch back fat. The replacement females are fed a carrying ration and we have maintained over an 80% first service AI conception rate on our females. The cattle are developed for large rugged environments.

The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.

Do Homework Before Buying Your Next Herd Bull If a bull fails the visual inspection, do not buy him. Make sure the breeder will stand behind the bull after purchasing in case there are some unforeseen, uncorrectable problems.

The Investment Investment of new bull genetics goes past the initial purchase price. In general, the price of a new herd bull should equal the price received for three to five calves. Thus, if the average calf sold from the herd is $500, a total of $1,500 to $2,500 should be invested in a new herd bull. If the average calf is sold from the herd is $900, a total of $2,700 to $4,500 should be the investment price. This type of investment should purchase a quality yearling or two-year old bull.

In some cases, quality older bulls (three- to five-year olds) can be purchased from producers wanting to change bulls to eliminate mating him to his daughters.

Once the new bull is brought home,

quarantine him from the rest of the herd for 30 days. This will minimize the risk of spreading disease to the entire cow herd. If the bull is a yearling, provide adequate nutrition. A yearling bull is still growing, just like a yearling heifer.

During the breeding season, watch the bull. Make sure he is breeding cows in heat. Watch to see if those cows come back in heat 21 days later.

If the majority of cows recycle, this may indicate a fertility problem.

Body condition score should remain between a 5 and a 5.5 during the breeding season. Bulls in poor condition lack the energy to breed cows and may not produce adequate sperm.

It is never too late to assess your herd and determine what is needed in terms of bull selection. Take the time, make initial bull selections on paper using all the performance tools available. Make sure adequate time is

allotted to visually inspect each bull thoroughly for signs of structural incorrectness. Only buy bulls from respected, reputable sources. Proper bull selection only adds value to the herd, just like any good investment. â&#x2013;

Observe Bulls Closely as the Breeding Season Begins

Obviously, bulls represent onehalf of the factory that will produce a calf crop to sell next year.

A good manager keeps an eye on his bulls during the breeding season to make sure that they are getting the cows bred. Occasionally a bull that has passed a breeding soundness exam may have difficulty serving cows in heat, especially after heavy service. Inability to complete normal service and low fertility are more prevalent and therefore more detrimental, than is low libido (failure to seek out and detect cows in heat) to calf crop percent. Such problems can best be detected by observing bulls while they work. Therefore producers should (if at all possible) watch bulls breed cows during the first part of each breeding season. Take a thermos of hot coffee at dusk or dawn’s early light and watch from the cab of the pickup to see if the bull(s) are doing the job for which they were purchased. If problems are apparent, the bull can be replaced while salvaging the remainder of the breeding season and next year’s calf crop.

Likewise a small proportion of bulls can wear out from heavy service and lose interest. These, too, will need to

be replaced. The greater the number of cows allotted to each bull in the breeding pasture the more critical it is that every bull be ready to work every day of the breeding season.

Injuries to bulls during the breeding season are relatively common. When a bull becomes lame or incapable of breeding, because of an injury to his reproductive tract, he needs to be removed from the breeding pasture and replaced with another bull.

Proper cow to bull ratios are difficult to define. There is tremendous variation among bulls as to their capability to breed large numbers of females.

Recommendations for smaller herds that will utilize only one bull per pasture may need to be conservative.

A time honored rule-of-thumb is to place about the same number of cows or heifers with a young bull as his age is in months. For instance a bull that is 14 months old going into his first breeding season should be expected to breed 14 or 15 cows; whereas as a two-year old bull may be placed with 20 – 25 cows. Mature bulls that have been examined by a veterinarian and have passed a breeding soundness exam can be placed with 25 – 35 cows and normally give good results.

There are as many ways to feed and develop young beef bulls as there are seedstock producers. There are many and varied reasons that bulls are managed and fed the way they are. Whether bulls are developed on the ranch, in a commercial facility, or at a central bull test, they are usually fed to gain 2.8 to 4.0 pounds daily from weaning to one year of age.

One of the most common complaints from beef producers is the run-down condition of young bulls after their first breeding season. Most young bull will loss condition and weight during their first breeding season. However, minimizing the loss of body weight and condition will extend the bull’s usefulness and productivity especially during their initial breeding season.

Can bulls be over-conditioned and/or under-conditioned before the first breeding season? The answer is probably yes. One might think an over-conditioned young bulls are better than under-conditioned bulls because if they are over-conditioned and they are expected to lose condition during the breeding season, at least they will still be in

good condition at the end of the breeding season. Overconditioned bulls entering the breeding season may be less active during the breeding season, especially if the breeding season occurs during the heat of summer. The same could be said for under-conditioned bulls in that their activity may be limited.

It is almost like the porridge being to hot, to cold, or just right. The idea is develop and manage young bulls so that they are “just right” for the breeding season. In other words, they are in their “working” clothes and “toned” up ready to perform their duty. In most cases, feeding and managing bulls to be in body condition score 6 (1=emaciated; 9=obese) at the start of their first breeding season is adequate. Body condition score 6 equates to body fat of about 20% to 23%. This body condition isn’t different for the target body condition of 1st-calf-heifers at their first calving.

As ADG increases, the amount of feeds high in energy, usually feeds high in starch, in the diet increases. As bulls are fed to a higher ADG, the likelihood of increasing body fat also increases.

Managing and Developing Young Beef Bull

As bulls are pushed to higher ADG, care must be taken to insure and control digestive upsets that can impact the liver in the form of liver abscesses, feet in the form of founder, and rumen integrity. Not managing the feeding program to eliminate digestive upsets has the potential to reduce the longevity of young bulls.

We have used distillers grains and corn gluten feed in our bull development diets. Distillers grains and corn gluten feed have been used as both a protein and energy source.

In the process of producing ethanol and fructose (corn syrup), the starch in corn is removed. The remaining byproduct is greater in protein, energy, and phosphorus compared to corn. Removing some starch in the diet and replacing it with essentially a high fiber energy source reduces the incidence of digestive upsets. In addition, if some corn byproducts are used, it is likely that phosphorus can be removed from the supplement. In most cases calcium will be needed in the supplement. In growing bull diets, it would be critical that the calcium to phosphorus ratio not be below 1.6:1. As always, feeds that are used in the diet need to be priced competitively into the diet.

Care of young bulls after the breeding season is important. Bulls should weigh 75 to 80 percent of their mature weight at the start of the second breeding season. If mature weight of the young bulls is estimated to be 2,000 pounds and at the beginning of their first breeding season they are 1300 (65% of mature weight) pounds and they loose 200 pounds during the first breeding season, then to be 75% to 80% of their mature weight by the start of the next breeding season, it calculates that they need to gain 400 to 500 pounds.

Between the end of their first breeding season and the start of their second breeding season, these young bulls need to gain about 2 lb/day. Native grass quality is peaking and starting on the decline in July and August and bulls will gain about 1.5 lb/da without supplementation.

Young bulls will need some supplemental energy and protein before the second breeding season. Consider not trying to wait until right prior to the second breeding season to get young bulls back in their working clothes and at the desirable weight. For a spring breeding season, consider feeding these bulls some protein and energy beginning about Christmas time. Starting this early allows you to put weight back on gradually with smaller amounts of a high energy feed. This doesn’t have to be accomplished in a dry lot and could be fed on pasture or when the bulls are grazing corn stalk residue.

This doesn’t suggest young bulls be pampered in an “artificial” environment. It does suggest to at least give them a chance to be productive and remain in the herd as long as you want them there. The bull battery is an expensive investment, manage the young ones so that you get a reasonable return on that investment. ■

Bull-Buying Basics Protect your herd from disease by running through this checklist.

QUESTION: When purchasing a new bull, what should I do to protect my herd from any possible diseases the bull might bring in?

ANSWER: Years ago the first two things on that list would have probably been brucellosis and tuberculosis, but today many states are free of those diseases. The bigger threats now are from diseases that many producers haven't even heard of.

1. Let's start with trichomoniasis. This is a venereal disease. Bulls are infected by breeding an infected cow, but show no signs. Infected cows may experience early embryonic death, abortion or pyometra (pus in the uterus). A virgin bull cannot be infected, but non-virgin bulls should be cultured for trich by a veterinarian before adding them to your breeding herd.

2. Also check for Johne's disease. This is a chronic disease causing diarrhea and severe weight loss. Test before the bull comes onto your property when possible, but realize a negative test does not mean the bull isn't incubating Johne's. Infected animals typically do not show signs until they are at least 2 years of age. Johne's status of the herd of origin and the reputation of the breeder may be as important as testing.

3. Next, consider Anaplasmosis. This is caused by a blood parasite and it can lead to severe anemia, loss of body condition, decreased milk production, abortion, infertility and death. It is transmitted by biting insects, ticks and contaminated needles or equipment.

4. Another big problem now is bovine viral diarrhea, which is very common in all parts of the country. BVD can cause fever, diarrhea, respiratory disease and reproductive problems. The biggest problem comes with the rarest form of the disease, the persistently infected animal (BVD-PI).

These animals are infected in the uterus. They never clear themselves of the disease and continually shed high levels of the virus. A simple ear notch test can identify these animals.

5. In addition to these tests, bulls should be vaccinated against IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, Leptospirosis 5-way, and Vibriosis and quarantined for four to six weeks. The quarantine gives bulls time to recover from any illness associated with the stress of the sale or shipping, and allows time for completion of diagnostic tests and a breeding soundness evaluation.

Multi-Breed EPD Base simplifies selection

Availability of time and being able to digest increasing volumes of information have evolved into two of Ranchers’ greatest challenges. Perhaps nowhere more pronounced than in making genetic selection decisions. Ranchers must: • Find the breed or breeds that fit your production environment and marketing strategy.

• Identify breeders whose management, selection, customer service, and integrity fits both you and your cowherd.

• Pour through the mountains of EPDs and pedigrees then study structure and phenotype to locate those bulls that will move your herd towards production and end product goals.

• Learn it all over again each time a new breed is added through a structured crossbreeding program.

Over the last 3-4 decades animal scientists have concentrated on building predictions (EPDs) for an increasing number of traits (some more relevant to profitability than others), refining prediction models so that the EPDs used to predict those traits are more precise and running biannual genetic evaluation for various breeds. Efforts to simplify producers’ selection process have only received more recent consideration – with little to no effort being focused across breed associations. Two summers ago that all changed. Red Angus, who had been running joint

genetic evaluation with Canadian Angus for the past decade, pooled that dataset with the American Simmental Association, which already contained significant volumes of Angus and Red Angus data as well as other breeds.

The result of this collaboration was the world’s largest multi-breed dataset with over 10 million animal records.

This summer, Red Angus and Simmental will again combine to give the beef industry something cattlemen and women have been asking for since the advent of genetic evaluation…EPDs that can be compared across breeds.

Starting with the Fall 2012 EPDs, all animals in Red Angus and Simmental’s multi-breed database will be described using the same language. That is, their EPDs will be published on the same multi-breed base and scale. Selection for Growth (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass (MARB, YG, CW, REA, FAT) EPDs will be greatly simplified as commercial customers will be able to directly compare these EPDs across breeds as well as registered hybrids/composites seedstock.

Yes, Red Angus EPDs will look different.

Here are some things you’ll notice immediately.

• The Fall 2012 breed averages (and subsequent runs) for Active Dams, Proven Sires, and non-parent bulls and females will be different from the Spring 2012 (and prior runs) • The Fall 2012 EPDs for the top 10% of the breed or bottom 10% of the breed for any of these traits in the Fall 2012 will be different as compared to previous runs.

But, most importantly, the rank between animals will not change.

• A Power Bull last spring will be a Power Bull on the new multi-breed base.

• A “Carcass” bull will still be a Carcass bull • A low birth weight bull will still be a low birth weight bull relative to the rest of the Red Angus breed.

As you can see a “Proven” sire that previously had a 62 YW EPD now has an 83 YW EPD…but he is still only average. bull, so he’s still an average

21 pound Obviously, he’s the same bull…his 21 pound increase in YW EPD mirrors RAAA’s

increase in the YW EPD BASE.

What is BASE?

For decades, each breed association has presented their EPDs in their own language (the base). Base is no more than a reference point for any trait against which subsequent generations of animals are compared. While some breeds pick a given year (several generations of cattle ago), as their base year, RAAA has historically set the base as the average EPDs of a specific group of high accuracy sires. Either case is intended to assure that the base population that future calf crops are to be measured against remains stable (does not change). That is the extent of the “science” involved with setting the base. A breed’s genetic trend for any given trait is reflected by the rate at which its breed average EPD moves away from that of its base population. Typically, any breed’s genetic trend represents the selection pressure breeders have placed on the respective trait over time.

Bacteria often get a bad rap. Frequently the targets of aggressive hand-washing campaigns, they get the blame for causing a wide range of nasty diseases in humans and animals.

But animal science researchers at Iowa State University are examining some of the helpful purposes bacteria can serve in the respiratory and digestive systems of beef cattle.

A pilot program at Iowa State recently began collecting nasal mucus and fecal matter samples from cattle on the ISU McNay Research and Demonstration farm in Chariton. The researchers will study those samples to gain a better understanding of the interaction

between the bacteria populations and the cattle.

James Reecy, director of the ISU Office of Biotechnology and a professor of animal science who is leading the project, said bacteria often share a mutually beneficial relationship with the organisms they live on or in.

“They’re present every day,” Reecy said.

“But there’s some sort of symbiotic relationship for a lot of the bacteria. We probably survive because they’re here.

The aim of this project is to get a better understanding of that interaction and find ways we can use it to our benefit with cattle.”

For instance, he said bacteria can help an animal metabolize nutrients in food that the organism may not be able to digest on its own. That’s what happens when ruminant animals like cows store food in the first compartment of their stomachs. After bacteria help break down the food, the animal then regurgitates the partially digested matter and ingests it a second time, a process

known as ‘chewing the cud.’ And none of it would be possible without the helpful bacteria in the ruminant animal’s stomach.

Reecy said most of the samples will come from cattle as they enter the feedlot. He said that’s the greatest time of susceptibility to disease, and those samples will yield the best look at how bacteria populations make cattle more or less vulnerable to illnesses.

After the samples are taken, researchers will sequence the bacterial DNA that’s present to find out how prevalent the bacteria are. Then the researchers will try to make connections between the bacteria and certain traits expressed by the cattle.

Reecy said the ultimate goal is to discover how the bacteria interact with the genetics of the cattle. Finding a balance between the right bacteria and the right genetics could lead to breakthroughs in beef production.

“There are lots of them on our bodies and in our bodies every day, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” he said. “In many cases they’re probably beneficial.”

Storing Natural Colostrum for Optimum Passive Immunity Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Emeritus Extension Animal Scientist

A previous article about commercially available colostrum substitutes has spawned questions about natural colostrum from a cow that lost a calf or from a dairy cow. An important factor that influences colostrum quality (immu–noglobulin concentration) is the age of the cow. Heifers have poorer quality colostrum while older cows have the best quality colostrum.

Another very important factor is milking stage. In general, colostral

immunoglobulin concentration is halved with each successive milking, therefore the first milking colostrum has twice the immunoglobulin content of the second milking colostrum. Colostrum leakage and premilking both adversely influence colostrum quality. Purchasing colostrum from other farms should be done with caution. Diseases such as Johne’s Disease may be transmitted from one operation to another via colostrum.

Cow calf producers are aware that natural colostrum must be ingested by baby calves within 6 hours of birth to acquire satisfactory passive immunity. However some calves do not have ample opportunity to receive colostrum. Perhaps the mother is a thin two-year-old that does not give enough milk or the baby calf was stressed by a long delivery process and is too sluggish to get up and nurse in time to get adequate colostrum. These calves need to be hand fed stored colostrum in order to have the best opportunity to survive scours infections and/or respiratory diseases.

Colostrum can be refrigerated for only about 1 week before quality (immunoglobulin or antibody concentration) declines. If you store colostrum, unfrozen be sure that the refrigerator is cold (33-35°F, 1-2°C) to reduce the onset of bacterial growth. If the colostrum begins to show signs of souring, the quality of the colostrum is reduced. The immunglobulin (very large protein) molecules in colostrum that bring passive immunity to the calf will be broken down by the bacteria, reducing the amount of immunity that the colostrum can provide. Thus, it is important that colostrum be stored in the refrigerator for only a week or less.

How long can the frozen colostrum be stored? We often answer this question flippantly by saying, "just as long as you would store frozen fish to eat!"

Colostrum may be frozen for up to a year without significant breakdown of the immunoglobulins. However this is one example where improved technology is not in our favor. Frost-free freezers are not the best for long-term colostrum

storage. They go through cycles of freezing and thawing that can allow the colostrum to partially thaw. This can greatly shorten colostrum storage life.

Freezing colostrum in 1 quart in 1 or 2 gallon zip-closure storage bags is an excellent method of storing colostrum.

Many producers have had great success using the zip-closure bags. Use two bags to minimize the chance of leaking, and lay them flat in the freezer. By laying the bags flat, the rate of thawing can be increased, thereby reducing the delay between time of calving and feeding.

The freezer should be cold (-20°C, -5°F) – it's a good idea to check your freezer occasionally.

"We expect that the U.S. will bring itself into compliance with its WTO obligations by May 2013 as determined by the arbitrator for the benefit of producers on both sides of the border," Canadian International Trade Minister Ed Fast and Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said in a joint statement.

For those of you that do not know me, I am Alyssa Looney, your current JRA President. I am from Denton, Texas, but I currently reside in Pennsylvania to attend law school at Penn State. I graduated last May from Texas A&M with a degree in Agribusiness. I have been involved in the JRA for many years and have participated in almost every program our great organization offers. I would recommend all of them! With that, and with it being the start of the new year, I figured I would help all of you plan your JRA Year! Everyone get your calendars ready…

The first thing I want to tell you about is the new Cyber Quiz. On the

first of every month, a question will be released via e-mail and the JRA Facebook Fan Page (like us! National Junior Red Angus Association).

Juniors have the entire month to answer the question. Everyone who gets the answer right will go into a drawing for a cool prize! Everyone who participates each month in 2013 will then go into a drawing for $100 credit toward winner’s JRA or RAAA account.

To kick off the new year, JRA events will be in full force at the National Western Stock Show! We have the Young Stockman Program January 12-13. This new program is a fun, hands-on approach to the cattle industry. It will switch off with the Loaded 4 Leadership Program every

There will be 5 openings in 2013 (3 two-year positions and 2 oneyear positions) so you (yes you!) should apply! I have been an officer in many organizations, but serving the JRA has been by far the most beneficial. I have gotten to travel the country, meet so many juniors and cattlemen, network, learn a lot, and have a LOT of fun! If you are a senior in high school or a current college student and need money for school (trust me, you DO!), make sure to get your scholarship applications in.

Round-Up registrations are also due, so sign up to join the JRA on a tour of Montana!

The summer will bring Round-Up, “Showdown Under the Big Western Skies.” This is your opportunity to travel all over the state of Montana with a bus full of your closest JRA

friends to many Red Angus ranches, Custard’s Last Stand Battle Reenactment, Montana Silversmith, and more! On Round-Up, we also hold most of our contests including the Quiz Bowl, Barnyard Olympics, Cattle Judging, Speech, Team Sales, and many more. Glendora Hammer Harting Glendora was born in Iola, Kan., on Nov. 29, 1921, to Melbourne Wade and Mary May Strong Fuller and died Mon-

day, Nov. 12, 2012, at Greenbrier Nursing Home, Enid.

She graduated from Enid High School in 1938, and attended Oklahoma State University in the 1960s.

Glendora worked in an airplane assembly plant during WWII.

She married John J. Hammer Sept. 19, 1947. Following his death in 1967, she married Eugene H. Harting in Marshall on Oct. 3, 1971.

Glendora was a member of Eastern Star, Women’s Aglow International, and American Red Angus Association. She was a longtime member of First Christian Church of Marshall and most recently became a member of Enid First Assembly of God Church.

Glendora is survived by three sons, Jeff Hammer and wife Barbara of Yukon, Vance Hammer and wife Carla of Marshall, and Doug Hammer and wife Beth of Independence, Mo.; one brother, William Fuller and wife June of Purcell; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands and one granddaughter, Ashley Brooke Hammer.
