This is a quote that speaks to me as we move into November of 2014. November is a natural time of year to take stock of the "harvest." Whether that's a calf crop, a stack of feedlot close-outs or a freezer inventory. We view our assets, or blessings, and take a special day this month to be thankful.

Working together. Mutual respect.

Appreciation. These are all components of a productive team, ranch, family, business or association. These are all things that, if developed in all areas of our lives, will make us more valuable, productive and satisfied in life.

As Red Angus stakeholders, we are all the "engines" of this business – the business we all share is that of producing beef. We ARE the work force – from east to west, north to south. All across this nation, we must leverage our knowledge to build better beef and to market that beef – the end product of our business.

We continue to see historic times in the cattle industry. It's no accident that Red Angus cattle are in high demand. There is a long tradition of leveraging knowledge, remaining principled and keeping an eye on the end goal.

As the newly elected president, I am thankful each day to be serving in this capacity in an association of hard-working, talented individuals. In the coming year, I'd like to concentrate on the workforce mentioned above. I'd like to develop our people and continue to grow as a workforce – one that recognizes, builds and advances the greatness of Red Angus.

As a member-driven association, ideas come from stakeholders and membership through committees, to the Board and on to staff. As ideas are developed, they are filtered through the guiding Core Policies of the Association, and follow the vision of the Strategic Plan.

Programs, promotion and communication that benefit Red Angus come forward with the long-range goal of benefit to the industry.

The building blocks of our business are the people. From daily chores to cattle procurement, everyone has valuable knowledge about producing Red Angus beef. Let's develop our people and our ideas together.

In the coming months, expect to see different authors for this Board Commentary. Expect to hear from different committee chairs about how ideas are being developed and implemented.

Expect to see the results of what people are carrying around in their heads and the outcomes of cooperative efforts.

The way of the goose This September, Red Angus members and staff traveled to Savannah, Ga., for the 61st annual Red Angus National Convention. The hospitality was excellent, getting to renew and make new acquaintances, and conducting Association business were highlights of the event.

Throughout the week, we had the pleasure of listening to speakers who had really great messages. We heard from the Georgia Ag Commissioner Gary Black, and also learned from Leo Beckman about the Georgia Ports.

Although we had many great speakers, one who stood out in my mind was Van McCall from McCall Ministries. He shared with us how we as people can learn from geese. Van gave us five key points that we can take from geese and implement into our cattle businesses to make a successful, team-oriented environment.

Lesson 1: Fly Together Partnerships and teamwork rule the day. If you surround yourself with excellent people, you’re far more likely to succeed than if you attempt to go at it alone. Just like your operations, the RAAA is continually looking to build on our partnerships and look for new opportunities. The synergy between commercial cattlemen and the beef industry is the driving force advancing our well-being.

Lesson 2: Stay In Formation Stay together and work together. Sure, times will get tough and you may become annoyed with one another, but a single person working in isolation cannot create synergy. Soon we will be replacing our five-year Strategic Plan with a new one. The plan will be our

guide (our formation) to continue our advances in key areas of the beef business.

Lesson 3: Rotate The lead goose eventually tires and rotates to the back of the pack to recharge their battery. I was a part of a group that acted this out for the crowd during Van’s speech. It’s important to share the workload amongst team members. It’s also important to ensure that all workers are cross-trained and able to perform multiple tasks. Sharing the load makes the work manageable.

Everyone taking their turn and moves the group forward.

Lesson 4: Honk Communication is key when working with one another. We should always communicate and offer encouragement as needed. Communication is just as important when things are going smoothly as it is when things are not.

The RAAA implements both print and electronic methods of communication.

Regardless of the mode of communication you prefer, the RAAA staff is striving to get the information to you.

Lesson 5: Leave No Goose Behind The best teams I’ve ever been on were made up of people who genuinely cared for each other and would always help each other out no matter the situation. Regardless of the type of beef operation or its location, Red Angus genetics has something to offer.

Maternal efficiency, carcass traits, eating qualities and performance can be identified to aid in your breeding decisions.

You know your operation and its goals, we are here to help you make those goals reality. ■

Does Your Ranch Get Routine Financial Maintenance?

As a rancher, it is important for your operation to monitor trends. You monitor trends in the weather, the size of calves a certain bull produces, input prices such as feed, prices of fuel, and the list continues.

However, all too often financial trend analysis gets ignored by many operators in the ag and non-ag sector alike.

Financial trend analysis can tell you a lot about the health of your operation.

Just like monitoring trends in your herd can tell you a lot about the herd’s health, a financial trend analysis can tell you a lot about the overall health of your operation. We’re not going to dig into the specifics of financial trend analysis because there are endless resources available that can help with calculating and interpreting certain financial ratios and their trends. A simple internet search for “financial ratio trend analysis” will bring up numerous places to start. The objective here is to inform you of the value of financial trend analysis and how you can implement it into your operation to set yourself above other operators.

You can think of financial trend analysis as the gauges of success of your operation much like the gauges on your pickup or tractor tell you information about your equipment. Each gauge tells you something different and some require more regular attention than others, but together they are all necessary to indicate whether or not your equipment is operating properly. In financial trend analysis, certain measures by themselves are more indicative than others, however, when taken as a whole, a financial trend can

tell a lot about the health of the business. They can tell you if your operation has too much debt leverage, whether or not you have enough liquidity within your business, how productive your labor force is, how efficiently your assets produce earnings, and again, the list goes on.

Once you start to implement a financial trend analysis and begin to interpret the data it can assist you in determining if your operation is becoming financially weak. A good financial trend analysis will include multiple indicators to be useful, however, it must be kept summarized enough to allow for easy analysis and interpretation. Building a meaningful trend analysis does take time and effort and there are multiple facets that go beyond the simple cash-basis books and records that many operations maintain.

A good set of cash-to-accrual conversions will be the starting point for compiling the bare-bones data for financial trend analysis. Cash-basis records will provide very limited information and much of it will give you false indicators so an accrual-basis set of financial statements is necessary.

A balance sheet and income statement should be the minimum, and a cash flow statement will allow for additional analysis. After you have this information you can begin compiling the trend analysis data that is meaningful to your operation. Each operation will have a different set of indicators that are most useful.

Next you’re ready to analyze and interpret your data. This analysis will help identify areas of concern and

then allow you to formulate a plan to address those concerns. When you have well-developed trends it is much easier to identify when the financial ratios are going outside of acceptable ranges. The more years of data you have the more normalized your trends will become thereby making interpreting them much easier.

By implementing these steps you’ll have one more tool in your toolbox to ensure the continued success of your ranch. It may not sit next to the 3/4” end wrench, but is just as useful and will provide a wealth of knowledge of what makes your ranch tick financially.

Recent Tax Update The remaining content is separate from the topic discussed above, but it is information that needs to be delivered to readers in a timely manner so that you can make informed year-end tax planning decisions.

Back in the March 2014 ARA, I wrote about possible tax-planning tips in regard to breeding cattle sales due to weather related disasters such as drought. This planning opportunity allowed a tax deferral on the sale of breeding stock if it was replaced within a four-year period. The IRS recently issued New Release 2014-94 and extends the normal four-year period to five years in which the replacement of the excess livestock sold must occur.

The intention behind this is that drought continues to be a problem across the nation. The IRS has the authority to extend this period if droughts persist beyond the normal four-year period. ■

Red Angus unveils reliable, unbiased indices Separating science from politics and marketing

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) implements a unique approach when developing genetic selection tools. In order to deliver the most reliable and unbiased data to Red Angus stakeholders, RAAA separates sound science from subjective politics and marketing.

RAAA achieves this through implementation of a non-political Technical Committee, which is populated by nonBoard members and actually has decision-making powers regarding genetic predictions.

Once the technical committee is provided an assignment – such as developing economic selection indices – it is tasked with overseeing development and ultimately deciding if the tool – or index in this case – is dependable enough to release to stakeholders.

While this process may slow the release of a new EPD or index, commercial producers can have confidence that once the tool is released, it is reliable.

Red Angus’ work on economic selection indices provides an excellent example of the importance of such committee structure. RAAA previously had the ability to release an index; however, Technical Committee review revealed flaws in the proposed index that essentially caused it to be a marketing tool as opposed to a selection tool.

After multiple refinements to the index development software, RAAA is excited to announce that the Technical

The standing policy of the RAAA is that when the science exists to make a genetic prediction more precise and reliable, the science is implemented. This is overseen by the Technical Committee and not the Board of Directors.

Committee has approved the release of the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices.

What are Indices?

The purpose of an index (plural – indices) is to estimate differences in an operation’s overall profitability resulting from a particular selection decision.

In developing an index to evaluate differences in profitability within an operation, assumptions must be made regarding the genetics of the cowherd (ex: average weaning weight) as well as economic values (ex: sale price of cull cows).

RAAA utilized the Red Angus database to determine the required cowherd as-

sumptions. The economic assumptions were derived from input obtained from CattleFax and economic data from Texas A&M and North Dakota State University. Additionally, certain basic production assumptions are made, such as: Will the bulls be used on heifers and/or cows? Are replacement heifers retained? When and how are calves marketed?

Once these assumptions were determined, the data was fed into a simulation model that accounted for the segments of the beef industry based on the assumptions. Finally, EPDs of the service sires were included in the simulation model to determine the overall impact the sires would have on the operation’s profitability.

The EPDs included in the index calculation are independently changed one unit (ex: Stayability EPD of 10 vs. 11), and the resulting change in overall profitability determines the weightings placed on each EPD. It is important to understand that these EPD weightings are not determined, or adjusted, using human perceptions. Thus, the weightings, and ultimately the indices, are completely based on science.

Red Angus unveils reliable, unbiased indices While the process of calculating an index is very complex, the resulting selection tool is very simple to implement. RAAA’s indices will be expressed to stakeholders as differences in profitability per exposure. For example, Bull A has an index value of 100 and Bull B has an index value of 150, and the selected bull would be mated to 120 cows over the bull’s productive lifespan. Selecting Bull B would add an additional $6,000 [(150 – 100) x 120] in profitability to the operation as compared to selecting Bull A. While Red Angus bulls are selected by stakeholders to fit into various production scenarios, selection pressure is typically placed on herd-building traits or traits that increase the value of marketed product. Many producers have even developed their own selection index to assist them in identifying bulls that meet these goals. Typically these include thresholds for certain EPDs, but as most would admit, these thresholds are not strictly followed. Red Angus’ selection indices will provide producers with a consistent selection tool built on a scientific, unbiased foundation.

HerdBuilder Index As the name indicates, implementation of the HerdBuilder Index will assist producers in building profitable herds.

The HerdBuilder Index is built using the following production scenario: • Red Angus bulls mated to cows and heifers (resulting progeny ¾ Red Angus, ¼ Simmental) • Replacement heifers retained from within the herd • All remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid.

Given that replacement heifers are retained, significant influence is placed on the obvious maternal EPDs of Stayability, Heifer Pregnancy and Calving Ease. Additionally, with all remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid, Marbling, Yield Grade and growth EPDs impact the HerdBuilder index.

GridMaster Index While Red Angus has traditionally been known as a superior maternal breed, those who have retained ownership in Red Angus calves know of their potential to excel in the feedyard and ultimately hang a premium carcass.

Red Angus unveils reliable, unbiased indices Red Angus stakeholders will quickly recognize the term “GridMaster,” as the Marketing Department annually recognizes load lots of harvested cattle with superior carcass observations as “Grid Master” Award winners.

Producers who place emphasis on the GridMaster Index in their selection decisions will not only experience an increase in their operation’s profitability; but as well can expect to see an increased number of calves recognized as Grid Master Award winners.

The GridMaster Index is built using the following production scenario: • Red Angus bulls mated to cows (resulting progeny ¾ Red Angus, ¼ Simmental) • All progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid.

For example, if your operation matches the HerdBuilder Index, except you would be using the selected bull on cows only, this small difference would not cause a significant change in the ranking of animals.

During committee discussions, the Technical Committee explored creating an additional HerdBuilder-Cow Index, which would use the same scenario as the above HerdBuilder except the bulls would only be used on cows. In comparing the HerdBuilder vs. HerdBuilder-Cow indices, we found that bulls ranked essentially the same between the two indices.

To be exact, the rank correlation was 0.97, which can be interpreted as only 3 in 100 bulls changed rank between the HerdBuilder and HerdBuilder-Cow. Thus demonstrating the robustness of the HerdBuilder Index, in that your production scenario can slightly deviate from the exact scenario in which the

HerdBuilder Index was built, and the HerdBuilder Index can still serve as a reliable selection tool.

A quick study of the HerdBuilder and GridMaster Indices reveals that the main difference between these two indices is the source of replacement heifers. If the selected sire will be used to produce replacement females, the HerdBuilder Index should be used.

However, if the selected sire will not be used to generate replacements, the GridMaster Index should be used.

Red Angus’ unwavering implementation of science has provided the foundation for the delivery of genetic selection tools with unmatched reliability. This precedence was strictly followed in the development and delivery of Red Angus’ HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices. Red Angus – Without a Doubt

“When I was a young kid, we tried every breed you can think of. But since we went to Red Angus, we’ve never looked back. The Red Angus is really a good breed,” assured commercial rancher Ryan Pancheri from Howe, Idaho. And, from his experiences with different breeds, he would know.

Pancheris’ first-calf heifers don’t initially go out on dry lands but, instead, graze sub-irrigated pastures where they’re able to forage and breed up well.

Ryan, his wife Barbara and their four children, along with five of Ryan’s brothers – Rick, Rod, Romero, Roman and Rory – and their families, run 2,500 Red Angus commercials with their mother, Marylyn, affectionately described by Ryan as the “glue” that holds their family of eight total siblings together.

The brothers are the third generation to operate in the Little Lost River Valley in southeast Idaho’s Butte County, some 65 miles west of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and 250 miles north of Salt Lake City, Utah.

When it comes to cattle, Ryan and his family members are sold on the fertility, mothering ability and great dispositions of Red Angus. They also appreciate the way these females fit their environment.

“They adapt very well to wherever we put them – from irrigated grass to

Marked only with a post office, Howe is located at an elevation of nearly

5,000 feet. It’s near here where the Pancheris run their mature cows on high-desert, mountainous country on both Bureau of Land Management (BLM) grazing allotments and private grazing lands.

Red Angus – Without a Doubt

This dry country usually receives less than 5 inches of rainfall per year. The Pancheris are one of the largest public lands grazers in their area, with BLM lands covered in sagebrush, crested wheat and native grasses.

“It is great cow-calf country,” Pancheri explained, “but not the best for yearlings.” And that’s why they run their replacement heifers on irrigated pasture under some of the 70 to 75 pivots on the expansive Pancheri operation comprised of wheat and alfalfa cropland and grazing lands.

Meanwhile, they allow their first-calf heifers a chance to further grow and breed up on sub-irrigated pastures, a management practice that has proven successful.

Sold on Red Pancheri said that his family had to run the gamut with different breeds before they discovered success by using Red Angus, initially incorporating them through sire genetics.

Their feeder-calf buyer, the late Ward Johnson, recommended the breed to the family who, by then, had already experienced Black Angus and Charolais cattle, along with Longhorns and Salers.

The Pancheris run their cattle on grazing lands below Mt. Borah, the tallest mountain peak in Idaho, at more than 12,000 feet in elevation.

The Pancheris initially started with a purchase of 10 Red Angus bulls.

Pancheri was concerned with their birth weights, but “Dad wasn’t the guy who believed in birth weights or EPDs for that matter.”

They turned out these bulls with white, black and a few red heifers before Pancheri received the paperwork confirming that three of the bulls had recorded birth weights greater than 100 pounds. He wasn’t impressed and feared the worse – calving issues … again.

The story had a happy ending, however. “We never pulled a calf that year and that’s what sold us on Red Angus,” said Pancheri.

A large user of public grazing lands, the Pancheris run 1,500 pairs on BLM allotments five to six months of the year.

He continued that Red Angus are the most maternal breed they’ve raised, from mothering ability to breed up.

“They’re just a lot more fertile cattle than other breeds.”

Pancheri said they do watch birth weights, moderating them for heifers.

However, very few of their 500 to 600 head of heifers need assistance at calving. They night check their heifers at calving, but don’t night check the mature cows – a definite credit to the comfort level this breed supplies from a calving-ease standpoint.

The Pancheris have also been pleased with the Red Angus bulls from breeding ability to growth, longevity and disposition. “They are easy to be around,” Pancheri stated.

Disposition is a big deal on this ranch, because “when the kids are out of school, they’re helping us. We rely on their help a lot, and it’s a lot better for us to have cattle that anybody can work than cattle with which you have to watch yourself.”

At least 15 Pancheri children are able to pitch in right now to get the work done,

“Our cattle are a part of who we are, not just what we do.”

the oldest at 22. Pancheri added, “My dad always said he had the best workforce around; he had all of us kids and didn’t have to hire many hired men.”

He adds that they’ve found the Red Angus bulls to also be easier on facilities. Idaho is a mandatory trich testing state, and Pancheri likes the fact that these red bulls don’t tear up the corrals, as had their black and white predecessors. Plus, “my kids get right in and help us.”

Bred Up for Success From their initial success with Red Angus bulls, the Pancheris started building their cowherd over the course of a number of years. They purchased replacements from the former Kemp herd and eastern Idaho’s Loosli Red Angus. When Kemp dispersed, they bought 4-, 5- and 6-year-old cows.

“We notched the ears of all the purebred and registered cattle we bought, and from that point on, we’ve kept all of the heifer calves from those cattle.

That’s how we’ve grown our herd to 2,500 head. We haven’t bought any females for 10 to 15 years.”

Pancheri added, “We got a great market now – our heifer calves will bring more than our steer calves nowdays.”

They’ve also been told their heifers are some of the best in the country for the size of their herd.

“We have lots of demand for our bred heifers. I could sell them really easily but until we get all our cows preg checked, I prefer to not sell anything.”

Heading in the Right Direction Pancheri believes their bull suppliers are providing them with high-quality Red Angus genetics. He said their primary supplier has been good to work with through the years, always interested in the needs of his commercial customer and concerned with what

With Rick’s help, Ryan oversees the bull buying for their herd, keeping track of genetics and selection factors.

They are mindful of birth weights but also pay attention to carcass traits.

Pancheri said they also really watch maternal because “you’ve got to have a cow produce a calf before you can have a carcass.”

For 18 years, the Pancheris have been successfully bull breeding their replacement heifers for 45 days in their feedlot.

Pancheri explained that they’ll turn four to six bulls in with a group of 100, and any heifers that don’t breed up in that time frame are sold in the fall.

The heifers start calving in February, one month ahead of the mature cows, which calve for 60 days beginning March 1, when temperatures can be as high as 48 degrees Farenheit and as low as 23 degrees Farenheit.

Mother Nature dictates much of the feeding requirements and it isn’t unheard of for them to need to feed hay in the winter for up to 120 days. “It depends on how long the cows can for-

age,” Pancheri explained. “A heavy snowfall or an open winter are factors on the feeding timeline.”

Branding begins April 1 and, starting with heifers, Pancheri said they’ll work a herd every week thereafter, slowly making their way up the valley. Their mature cattle are turned onto BLM range May 1 where they are bred. They spend summers on dry grazing lands, and are only brought onto irrigated pasture for a month in early September before weaning in order to add additional weight on calves. Last year, calves weaned off at 579 pounds, which Pancheri said is really good for their country.

They start weaning October 1 with 300 to 500 head of pairs separated weekly for four weeks. The calves are trucked to their feedlot in Howe, while the cows are preg checked and turned back out onto rangelands to forage until the weather dictates otherwise.

Since 2006, the family has enrolled calves in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP), tagging their calves with the familiar yellow tag as another means to capture additional value.

Pancheri explained, “We thought it would give us another avenue that, if we wanted to market them, people would know that they’re the Red Angus.” He said they haven’t gotten the opportunity to test the tag because the Johnson brothers have placed the top bid on their cattle each year.

Gary and Robert Johnson, twin brothers, own and operate Johnson Livestock near Idaho Falls, a finishing feedlot they started in 1984 with their late father, Ward, who suggested Red Angus to the Pancheris.

The Johnsons have purchased Pancheri cattle for 30 years, and this relationship extends back another 40. Explaining why, Robert Johnson remarked, “They have been really good, honest people to work with. We’ve developed a good relationship over the years. They’ve always produced quality livestock and always been as honest as can be when we’ve dealt with them.”

Though the Johnsons feed all breeds of cattle, he said, “Performance-wise, I would fill our feedlot with Pancheri cattle if there were enough of them.”

“The uniformity now, compared to 25 years ago, is unbelievable. They’ve done a really good job the last 10 to 12 years of picking the right type of fe-

males to put back in their herd. Obviously they’re picking sires that produce uniform calves.”

The Pancheri steers are harvested at JBS in Hyrum, Utah, at about 18 to 22 months of age. Johnson said the front end of the Pancheri cattle have probably been the best of all they’ve harvested in 2014.

The first five loads, all harvested on one day, quality graded 95 percent Choice with just under 10 percent Prime. For their feedlot, the Johnsons usually average a 63 percent yield, but with the Pancheri cattle, they’ll usually see an additional half percent.

“Between the quality of their cattle and type of people they are to deal with, they’re pretty tough to beat,” Johnson assured. He added that the cattle are also healthy and winter hardy. From the example these cattle have set, he said, “We’d absolutely feed more good Red Angus if we could get them.”

The Johnsons share feed and performance data with their cow-calf customers.

“They tell us if we are going in the right direction with our cattle or not,” Pancheri said, “and we are still in the business.”

All heifers are calved near Howe, but three other herds are scattered into their upper valley, as far as 30 miles apart.

He added, “Everybody keeps telling us we should start crossbreeding. I asked the Johnsons if we needed to change our program and they asked me, ‘Why do you want to change something that is as good as it is?’ So, we’ll keep going the way we’re going.”

Actually, Pancheri and his brothers have no desire to crossbreed. They have had a higher percent calf crop and their calves are heavier than they’ve ever been. He said when you look down the feedlot bunks, the cattle look like peas in a pod.

“There’s enough here to keep our family busy and, some days, there is too much. We have a good work force, and working together with six of us brothers, our kids and wives, we do a good job. As long as we can continue to make a living and pay the bills, we’re doing alright. The Red Angus have helped us as much as anything.”

2014 RAAA National Convention Convention flavored with Southern hospitality

Red Angus members convened in Savannah, Ga., Sept. 10 – 12 to enjoy Southern hospitality in the port city known as the “Hostess City of the South.” The Southeast Area planned the convention and welcomed Red Angus members from across the nation and Canada.

This year’s convention attendance totaled 200; 149 were members of which 99 were voting members, and 46 were first-time attendees. Three attended from a foreign country.

Commercial Symposium Convention activities kicked off on Wednesday, Sept. 10, with a free Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium hosting 85 attendees. Local producers and convention attendees learned about managing risk in their cattle operations, how to minimize hay needs, and how to add value to their calf crop through state programs or RAAA’s tag enrollment programs.

The Ladies’ Symposium entertained 55 women with a fashion show, beef crock-pot recipes and craft projects and Southern stories.

Foundation Supporters of the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. (RAFI), chaired by Steve Newberry of Livingston, Mont., joined together for the third annual RAFI dinner – a Low Country Boil – featuring seafood and cuisine native to the area.

Following dinner, Huxsie Scott entertained attendees with her musical talent.

Year In Review President Tim Whitley started the general session of convention with a short address, summarizing with, “We have a good breed of cattle but our success can

be attributed directly to the quality of people who raise those cattle.”

RAAA CEO Twig Marston presented the State of the Association address.

Marston sited impressive averages over the past year’s seedstock sales but challenged the Red Angus membership for continued growth and progress.

“Now is the time to create even more demand and value for Red Angus cattle by building our maternal database, increasing our stewardship efforts and developing our Red Angus people,” said Marston. “Always keeping in mind that we want beef at the center of our consumer’s plate.”

Breed Improvement During the Breed Improvement Committee Meeting, Larry Keenan, director of breed improvement, unveiled the science behind the soon-to-be-released HerdBuilder and GridMaster Indices.

He reported that the Technical Committee has been working on – and fine-tuning – the science behind the indices to be a true selection tool rather than just a marketing tool.

The HerdBuilder Index will indicate genetics that are ideal if producers are retaining replacement females. The GridMaster Index will identify cattle that will excel in the feedlot and in carcass traits.

He expects the indices to be released to the membership in early October.

Constitution and Bylaws The Constitution and Bylaws Committee recommended two amendment changes to clarify the voting procedures in the instance of a tie vote for directors and officers. The amendments outline the steps necessary to break tie votes and follow Robert’s Rules of Order. Both amendments passed unanimously.

2014 RAAA National Convention Registration The registration committee updated the membership on the progress of RAAA’s new database, REDS Pro, and announced that the beta version of the search options would be available on the website for members to use and experiment with. They encouraged members to report and comment on features they liked or wanted improved.

Promotion Promotions Committee discussed the growth of the American Red Angus Magazine, some of the projects that are being implemented by state affiliates, and the success of the Grant Affiliate Program.

Laurin Spraberry was introduced as the new public relations and media specialist.

Show and Sale The Show and Sale Committee conducted their business in June, so at their brief committee meeting at convention, they discussed the upcoming Red Angus show schedule.

Marketing The marketing team introduced Barrett Carlisle, commercial marketing specialist, who joined RAAA in May. They also reported impressive tag sales that have picked up in recent months as producers prepare to wean calves.

The marketing team again produced calving books that members could special order for their customers with a customized cover.

Junior Activities The Junior Red Angus (JRA) Board of Directors played an active role in convention assisting staff and convention attendees as needed. They held their JRA Board meeting, participated in the JRA committee meeting and presented their year in review.

The past year included a booth at the National FFA Convention, Loaded 4 Leadership, National Red Angus Junior Show, Round-Up in California, American/Canadian Exchange Program, JRA contests and scholarships.

They are currently planning the Young Stockman Program for January 2015 in Denver, Colo., and the 2015 Round-Up in North Dakota. The National Red Angus Junior Show will be at the NILE in Billings, Mont., in October 2015.

In addition to their silent auction, they raised funds through the auction of a framed pencil drawing depicting the excellent maternal characteristics of the Red Angus female.

Savannah Culture Convention attendees enjoyed learning more about Savannah’s ports and Georgia’s agriculture through guest speakers. Members were all eyes when huge cargo ships slip into port on the Savannah River directly in front of the Marriott Riverfront.

Thursday afternoon, attendees enjoyed a riverboat tour, relaxing and visiting with Red Angus breeders and seeing first-hand the business of the Georgia Ports Authority. Savannah is the fourth busiest container port in the U.S.

Savannah is also known as the “city of live oaks and dead folks.” The long branches of live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss form natural archways in the downtown district. The city of Savannah is built on top of Indian burial grounds and old cemeteries, providing tourists with ghost stories and haunted tours.

Red Angus Young Stockmen will meet Thursday, Jan. 8 and Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, during the Red Angus activities of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, Colo. On Thursday the group will venture to the Kuner Feedyard and Leachman Cattle Co. of Colorado.

On Friday, Young Stockman Program participants will train for BQA – a cow college – at the Colorado State University ARDEC unit. Young Stockmen will be divided into small groups for the BQA training and will rotate through six different stations – three in the morning and three in the afternoon.

And, of course, no youth gathering is complete without some food and a little friendly competition. We will meet in the DoubleTree Hotel on Quebec Street (the Red Angus headquarters) for a Quiz Bowl and a pizza party after the Thursday field trips!

Facelift for JRA Contests The JRA Board has evaluated several of the current JRA contests and decisions were made which reflect contest participation and eliminate duplication between contests. Effective immediately for all upcoming JRA contests and events, these changes have been adopted: 1. The JRA Essay Contest has been retired and no longer offered beginning in 2015

2. With greater interest in the Graphic Design Contest over the past few years, the JRA Poster Contest has been retired as a separate contest during Round-Up. However, poster entries will be accepted in the Graphic Design Contest.

3. The JRA Website Design Contest has been merged into the Graphic Design Contest beginning with 2015.

4. The JRA Print Advertising contest has been merged into the Graphic Design Contest beginning with 2015 and will no longer be part of the Best-AllAround compilation at Round-Up. Print Advertising entries will be incorporated into the Graphic Design Contest and have a May 1 entry deadline.

Marlene Rector, Silesia, Mont.

On November 10, 1941, the Gallatin Valley welcomed Marlene Estelle Rector to Rusty and Esther Seifert Rector. She was a 1960 graduate of Belgrade High School of Belgrade, Mont. Upon her graduation, she attended two years at Montana State College and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

On March 14, 1964, Marlene married Marvin Lester “Les” Welch.

They began operating Rector Ranch raising small grains and cattle.

They had two children, Carol (Pete) and Dean (Gina). On July 9, 1974, Marlene was widowed by Les’ sudden death.

Marlene was active in her fraternal societies. She was a member of the Belgrade Chapter of Job’s Daughters, Order of Eastern Star in Belgrade, and Daughters of the Nile, Sapphira No. 79, Helena, Mont.

Marlene continued to live on the ranch in Spring Hill raising her beloved Red Angus cattle. She was an active member of the Montana Cowbells and Montana Red Angus Association. In 1976, Marlene bought her first registered Red Angus cows from J. H. Leachman. She proudly and passionately continued raising Red Angus cattle until 2008.

Marlene became an avid quilter hosting retreats with friends from around the state. She continued creating quilts for family and friends up until the time of her death.

In 2003, Rector Ranch relocated to Roy, Mont. In April of 2004, Marlene moved to Lewistown, Mont., to be closer to her much-loved Red Angus cattle. While living in Lewistown, she made many friends while working at Don’s Western Wear.

During the winter of 2010, Marlene and Rector Ranch entered into a new venture in Silesia, Mont., at the Cottonwood Equestrian Center, where she resided until her passing on August 16, 2014.

Her legacy will continue on with her grandchildren: Wyatt Dean Rising, Garrett Allen Welch, Morgan John Rising, Reed Daniel Welch and Mylee Grace Welch.

She is survived by her two children, Carol (Pete) Rising of Wibaux, Mont., and Dean (Gina) Welch of Silesia, Mont.; one brother, Dr. Robert W. (Diana) Rector of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; two nieces, Sheryl (Pete) Peck (Courtney, Trevor, Alex and Tucker) of Bozeman , Mont., and Michelle (Shawn) Cole (Skyler, Cerissa and Camber) of Bozeman, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her father, R L Rector, her mother, Esther and her husband, Les. Memorial gifts were directed to Montana Red Angus Association.

.HUQHQ¡V &DWWOH Joe Barbour, Wibaux, MT Joe Richard Barbour, age 73, passed away on Sept.

5, 2014, at his home in Wibaux, Mont.

Joe was born on July 23, 1941, in Fairbury, Neb., a son of Carl Francis and Marguerite Ruth (Stanton) Barbour. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Anita, Iowa, where he was raised and educated; graduating from Anita High School with the class of 1960. On the very night of his graduation, Joe left with a custom combine crew and traveled with them as far as Great Falls, Mont.

While in Great Falls, Joe worked for several ranchers in the area and he later worked for the copper smelter in Anaconda, Mont. He eventually came to work on a ranch near Billings, Mont., where he met Ardyth McGill Kukowski. They were later married on January 14, 1974, and Joe quickly assumed the role of father to Ardythâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s five children.

Throughout the years he worked for numerous ranchers before settling in the Squaw Gap, North Dakota, community in 1981, where he and Ardyth started their own ranching and Red Angus business.

Together they ran the business for 10 years and bought their own land on the Montana-North Dakota border. They operated the ranch until 2007, at which time they semi-retired and moved to Wibaux.

Joe also enjoyed working with Border Collies. He believed they were important to a cattle operation. Being a rancher was Joeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifelong dream and he worked hard to attain it.

Joeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family was very important to him. He enjoyed spending time with them, especially talking guns and hunting with his grandsons.

He was proud to be Opa, Grandpa and Pa Joe. â&#x20AC;&#x153;His heritage to his children wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t words or possessions, but an unspoken treasure, the treasure of his example as a man and a father,â&#x20AC;? by Will Rogers Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Marguerite; and one stepson, Darin Kukowski.

Joe is survived by his wife, Ardyth of Wibaux; four step-children, Kenneth (Jamie) Kukowski of Billings, Mont.; Jeff (Lisa) Kukowski of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; Vernon (Senja) of Wibaux, and Susan (Brian) Sarsland of Golva, N.D.; ten grandchildren, Christopher Kukowski, Austin Kukowski, Arthur Kukowski, Robert Kukowski, Ryan Kukowski, Cheyenne Kukowski, Casey Kukowski, Cayden Sarsland, Kyle Sarsland and Carter Sarsland; four siblings, Martha (Ted) May of Havensville, Kan., Polly (Doyle) Ruth of Orient, Iowa, Ellen Barbour of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Jon (Celine) Barbour of Cheyenne; nieces, Stacey Cass, Elizabeth and Carley Barbour; and nephews, Travis Ruth and Jeremy Crowder. â&#x2013;

Stuart Gilbert was nominated to do the ALS Ice Bucket challenge prior to the sale. To help raise awareness and funds for ALS, the opportunity to be the one to dump the ice water over his head was auctioned off. The Kick Off Classic consignors raised $1,000 for ALS and took a volunteer from the audience, Jonathan Bierschenk, to do the honors. ■
