Take a Kid Fishin’

Maybe you have heard the old saying, “Take a kid fishin’ and teach him to fish. You will make a friend for life, and you will change his life!”

It is good advice for adults of any age. Making an investment in a young person’s life and having fun in the process are certainly worthwhile goals in today’s world. Taking the time to mentor a kid or two, teaching them a trade, getting to know them and seeing them discover something for the very first time is an extremely rewarding experience.

For 40 years, the Junior Red Angus (JRA) Association has been figuratively – and sometimes literally – “taking kids fishin’!” The ultimate goal of the JRA is to educate its members about the beef cattle industry and the Red Angus breed, and to provide opportunities to build leadership, character and stewardship in a fun environment.

This past summer’s JRA Round-Up was a perfect example of accomplishing that goal with participants from 16 states and Canada making fun and educational stops all over California. Juniors and chaperones experienced beef production from pasture to plate and learned first hand about drought and the importance of irrigation. They viewed walnut production and processing up close, visited with two past RAAA Board members and toured their cattle operations, saw the birth place and sire of this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Champion,

and conducted a business meeting and elected officers.

That’s just a “snapshot” of one JRA activity that took place this year!

Juniors also get the opportunity to participate in either the Young Stockman’s Program or the Loaded 4 Leadership in Denver, Colo., each January to build their knowledge of the industry.

They can also compete for scholarships and in contests throughout the year, and stay up-to-date on JRA information through the JRA eNews.

While the contests and activities promote fun and fellowship, the young people also gain valuable insights in cattle management, record keeping, marketing and health protocols for their Red Angus operations.

They also learn about the history of this great breed, the contributions that Red Angus has made to today’s beef industry and get a glimpse at tomorrow’s beef industry.

The Future Growth in the world’s population and a growing appetite for highquality, great-tasting protein sources tell us that the future of the beef industry looks very bright! Now should be an excellent time to encourage young people to take a serious look at a career in agriculture.

In the future, the JRA plans to host more local and regional activities for Red Angus stakeholders of all ages.

There will be many opportunities for adults to get involved as volunteer

junior leaders who can share the rich heritage of the Red Angus breed and introduce young people to animal agriculture.

Maybe in the future the saying will be: “Teach a kid to farm! You will help feed the world!”

JRA members will go on to be farmers, ranchers, animal scientists, veterinarians, and agribusiness and food industry professionals. Of course, not all JRA members may be involved in agriculture but will become doctors, nurses, lawyers, teachers, investment bankers, data analysts, political lobbyists, communications specialists and more – just as they have in the past.

Farewell, Friend

For the past 15 years, the JRA has been fortunate to have a tremendous teacher, mentor, leader, friend, disciplinarian and cheerleader. As the RAAA Junior Programs Coordinator, Dawn Bernhard has invested countless hours in the lives of young people in an effort to help them discover their potential and improve themselves.

It is with great reluctance that the Red Angus family will bid farewell to Dawn in 2015. While Dawn begins another chapter of her adventure in January, her contributions to this breed and its members will be seen and felt for many years to come. Thanks, Dawn, for all of your efforts to teach Red Angus youth “how to fish!” You’ve had a positive impact on so many lives! ■

Many future Red Angus leaders will come from their ranks and, no matter what line of work they choose, they will be advocates for – and friends of – agriculture. ■

2014 has been a banner year for the Red Angus Association of America!

For six decades, yes, 60 years, the thoughtful foresight of a group of breeders dedicated to Red Angus and their place in the forefront of performance, genetics, scientific-based evaluations, beef breed associations and the commercial beef industry has shaped the RAAA!

Basing a breed’s foundation on elements of beef productivity, composing a set of Core Policies to lead the evolution of the breed through the years and positioning stakeholders with a strong foothold and earned recognition in the beef industry is a unique approach that has stood the test of time. While many beef breeds are experiencing decreased cattle numbers and reduced commercial market share, Red Angus continues to grow and is the only major beef breed to see increased registrations and market share over the past few years.

The plan for balance in the RAAA has secured its place in the beef industry through the development of leadingedge technologies that exemplify the commitment to Red Angus’ success.

These programs include Total Herd Reporting (THR), focusing EPDs on Economically Relevant Traits, Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP), Allied Access, the new Choice+ Premium Red Angus grid with Tyson, and the recent release of HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices.

Red Angus’ position in the marketplace is further strengthened by the Strategic Planning Committee that focuses on the ever-changing beef industry landscape to maintain the vision of the RAAA’s founding members.

50 Years

Five decades ago, an emerging beef breed founded the American Red Angus (ARA) Magazine. The ARA is unique in its approach to the beefpublication world by focusing on commercial cattle production instead of individual seedstock producers.

The ARA sends complimentary subscriptions to bull buyers, and publishes articles based on science, marketing Red Angus feeder cattle and Red Angus’ influence on the beef industry, while educating both commercial and purebred producers.

40 Years

Then, 40 years ago, this same performance-focused breed sought to establish a youth organization with a unique, balanced approach. Keeping the Red Angus philosophy and Core Policies in mind when developing the direction and programs offered to the Junior Red Angus (JRA) Association members was, and still is, different.

while incorporating national contests, friendships and fun.

This traveling leadership and educational conference sets the JRA apart.

Today, there is also a Commercial Sponsorship that provides funding for youth who raise commercial Red Angus cattle. These youth can be nominated by any Red Angus breeder to attend Round-Up and grow in leadership and education alongside JRA members.

JRA program-wide invitations are issued to commercial youth to attend Round-Up, participate in Loaded 4 Leadership and the Red Angus Young Stockman Program. In 2014, members of another beef breed’s junior Board of Directors attended Round-Up – opening up an across-the-aisle approach to networking within youth beef breed associations.

Establishing a National Junior Show combined with the National Open Show is another example of “thinking outside the box” for Red Angus.

With a focus on the Red Angus Core Policies that incorporate the use of EPDs by national show judges, no other junior beef breed program provides its members the chance to exhibit their cattle in two national shows in the course of two days.

This affords members the experience of exhibiting at major livestock venues including the National Western Stock Show, the North American International Livestock Exposition, Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, Northern International Livestock Exposition and the Iowa State Fair.

Junior exhibitors share the barns with national-level, open show exhibitors from around the continent and this format provides a large audience of a cross section of breed

enthusiasts for whom to display their cattle.

Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP)

by Chelsea Poe, Marketing Programs Coordinator If you participate in the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP), it’s important to make sure your bulls are transferred to you after the sale. In order to participate in the FCCP, Red Angus staff will need to trace bulls to your account in the RAAA database. If you are looking to enroll your calf crop in the FCCP, call Red Angus at 940320-8316 to go through a short supplier enrollment over the phone.

RAAA Marketing Programs continue to have Red Angus-sponsored Feeder Calf Sales from December through February. If you are looking to market with other producers raising Red Angus feeder cattle, take a look at our list on page 80. These sales give you the opportunity to pool your resources with other producers and let buyers know they can fill a truck.

Harold Bertz Joins Red Angus Marketing Team

by Laurin Spraberry, RAAA Media and Public Relations Coordinator The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) welcomes Harold Bertz as its new Director of Business Development. A Missouri native, Bertz will play an integral role in increasing the demand for Red Angus genetics.

“Harold brings vision and fresh ideas to RAAA,” said Twig Marston, CEO. “He is dedicated to his work, the beef industry and the Red Angus breed. We’re excited to have him join our talented team of professionals and are looking forward to him taking our marketing programs to the next level.”

A sixth generation rancher, Bertz brings more than 20 years of management experience from Meadow Lane Farms, a diversified crop and livestock operation established in Mayview, Mo., that has been in Bertz’s family since 1944.

As the Director of Business Development, Bertz will create, implement and review business development and alliance programs which focus on increasing demand for Red Angus genetics. He will be responsible for developing relationships with beef production and food entities that will strengthen the Red Angus presence in the beef industry.

“Throughout my lifetime involvement in the cattle industry, I have always admired Red Angus cattle and the breeders that raise them,” said Bertz. “I have appreciated the commitment to science and the commercial industry that RAAA has always exemplified and I am

Bertz is a past board member and president of state breed associations and currently serves on the Lafayette County Cattlemen’s Association Board of Directors.

Along with his experience in the cattle industry, Bertz has also been nationally recognized as an Adult Agriculture Education Instructor and FFA Advisor in Missouri. He has won several educational awards including Missouri Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association Distinguished Service Award and Missouri Outstanding Adult/Postsecondary Program.

Bertz received his bachelor’s of education and agricultural education from Missouri State University in 1993, then went on to earn his master’s degree in agricultural education from the University of Missouri. He currently lives in Mayview, Mo., with his wife Melisa and two children, Molly and August.

Fall 2014 Heifer Exposure

Peparing for Sale Day

Heifer exposure data is important as it is used for the calculation of the Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD. This EPD holds great economic relevance to all producers and customers – the greater the pregnancy rate, the fewer amount of heifers that must be retained as replacements and the more that can be “cash cropped.”

• DNA Early – If DNA testing is used as a marketing tool, make sure DNA is sent in early to meet ALL deadlines.

DNA results are returned to the National Office in 15-20 business days after being received at the lab.

Reminders were sent midNovember for the Fall 2014 Heifer Exposure Report.

The heifer exposure inventory is for yearling heifers 9-17 months of age.

The following must be indicated: • Breeding Season (beginning and ending dates) • Exposure information • Management Group • Disposal information (if applicable)

Management Groups are used to characterize females that were provided different opportunities to become pregnant. Some examples would be: • Difference in nutrition • Pasture vs. dry-lot development • A.I. only vs. A.I plus clean up bull • 25-day exposure vs. 60-day exposure RAAA does not need palpation records but just needs to know if the females were provided with the opportunity to get pregnant.

Compose a list of the animals’ registration numbers with lot numbers into an Excel spreadsheet. Select a template (viewable online at redangus.org/marketing/sale-planner) if needed and send to SCDE@redangus.org. Allow for a few business days to receive your request via email.

• Sale Day Packets – Request that your sale is listed on the RAAA Calendar of Events at www.redangus.org/calendar/submit and check “Yes” to receive a Sale Day Packet.

The RAAA packet consists of the following material as handouts for customers.

Garrett to Assist Member Services Department

Chessie Garrett of Justin, Texas, recently joined the RAAA parttime in the registration department after completing an internship this summer.

Garrett is currently a junior at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, where she is pursuing a degree in animal science and is an active member of Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow and Block and Bridle.

Garrett grew up around a cowcalf operation in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and aspires to own and operate her own operation.

In the registration department, Garrett will handle member services duties such as transfers, heifer exposures, registrations, administrative duties and other projects as needed. Angelia Brooks, RAAA registry manager, said Garrett has proved to be a valuable asset to the membership.

“Having Chessie here during peak times in the department has really helped maintain the flow of work,” said Brooks. “Her enthusiasm to learn is an inspiration.”

Our Dakota Cowherd

We merged with Strawberry Ridge Red Angus in 2013 and moved that herd to Mandan, North Dakota this fall. We are working with the Randy Schmidt Family to run this “nucleus” herd just north of Mandan. The Strawberry Cows have a significant influence from the historic Larson Red Angus herd and specifically the Larson Flo Marie cow family. This herd has been selected for generations to maximize growth and maternal. We think that this herd perfectly fits the beef production systems in the Dakotas.

Our Dakota Genetics We have established a breeding philosophy over the yearsthat incorporates optimizing multiple traits without overemphasizing any single trait.We are utilizing several indexes to select our lines of cattle at this time which include the patented Leachman $Profit Index as well as the two new Red Angus indexes, Herdbuilder and Gridmaster. We are taking a strategic approach to where we target our various lines of genetics and we plan to emphasize growth, maternal and carcass for the Dakota region. Abundant resources in this area of the country allows for maximizing production outputs and we feel that we have the lines that can best meet producers’ production goals.

Our Bull Development

We are working with the Price Family who own and operate Missouri River Feeders near Price, North Dakota, which is just 20 miles north of Mandan. The Price’s have a long and historic presence in the area and run one of the best development centers anywhere in the country. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 ADG with 0.2 of an inch of backfat. The bulls are available for viewing at any time but please contact the office at (701)663-5772 for directions and scheduling.

Our Team - Families Working Together Ryan Ludvigson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the Ozark Performance Group.

Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist and the architect for the direction of our various breeding lines. He is also in charge of our data collection and information systems. In addition to this he runs our semen sales division.

The Justin and Carrie Deckert Family – we have a very long history with this well known seedstock family. The Deckert’s are an integral part to our Red Hybred and Red Simmental program with years of knowledge and experience producing some the most sought after seedstock in the Dakota’s.

We are leaning heavily on them to help us design and manage the Dakota program.

Our Genetics We have established a breeding philosophy over the years that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. We are now utilizing the patented Leachman $Profit Index that essentially takes our philosophy and ranks cattle on their ability to return a profit to our customer’s operations. Additionally, we also use the indexes developed by the RAAA in a multiple index system. Herd sires such as Night Calver, Nextpectation, Takeover and Saga are perfect examples of our genetics that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes.

Our Bull and Heifer Development New this year, we are developing the bulls at Neo Sho Farms located near Southwest City, Missouri. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 ADG with 0.2 of an inch of backfat.

The bulls run in 10-40 acre fescue pastures which allows for plenty of exercise and muscle development. The replacement females are developed on pasture with minimal supplementation. All of the cattle are developed for low input conversions.

Our Team The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.

Former JRA member and intern finds success in beef industry

It’s early morning and the sun has not yet risen. The smell of a fresh batch of feed wafts through the yard as it heads out on the trucks to the bunks. It is here the Kalynn Morcom starts her day, and it is here that she fuels her passion.

Morcom is the assistant feedmill manager at the JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding yard near Gilcrest, Colo. She is one of the only females in the company to do this job, and one of the youngest at only 23. “I can keep up with the boys and excel at one of the hardest, most demanding jobs on the feedlot. It’s my responsibility to make sure we are producing high-quality feed on time every day,” she said.

This high-quality feed turns into highquality beef, and she takes pride in knowing that she is helping to feed people across the world. “Every person on the planet has to eat. No matter what the future hardships are, we will still have to produce a safe and wholesome product while maintaining sustainable land practices and sound business strategies,” she explained.

Morcom works with a team of people, and every single day, 365 days a year, they produce the different rations that are needed at the feedyard to feed tens of thousands of cattle. Each batch is made with precision and, on average she makes more than 1 million pounds of feed a day.

Kalynn Morcom is the only female in a managerial role, and one of the youngest for JBS Five Rivers Feeding. This is the feedmill where she works to produce feed for thousands of cattle every day.

“Every day has something different in store, which continually challenges me.

I don’t like to sit at a desk doing the same work day-in and day-out. There is always something to do or improve in the feedmill, which keeps me moving and striving to make it a better department. These continual tests and challenges take me out of my comfort zone and push me to be better as a manager,” she stated.

Striving for excellence is something

Morcom believes is important, and she works each day to be the best at her job that she can be. She considers herself a perfectionist, and learning to fail has been a growth experience for her.

“The biggest personal growth in my career has been learning to accept failure, because it happens. No one can predict every little thing that can go wrong on a daily basis, whether it be with personnel or mechanical,” she explained.

She continued, “I cannot say I have overcome this 100 percent, because I’ve been told I have high expectations for myself that are near perfection. It used to bother me greatly when the mill would have unscheduled down time, and it still does when I know it could have been prevented. With time and experience, I have learned to think quickly, and make decisions on the fly when needed, but also to take the time to put a plan in place so that it can’t and won’t happen a second time.”

Her work ethic was developed on her family’s ranch in Washington where Morcom grew up raising and showing Red Angus. Her family started raising them when she was 9 with a bottle calf, and she received her first registered Red Angus heifer at age 11.

“By the time I was 18, we were competing at 14 cattle shows each year and had a herd of 40 head between my three sisters, my mom and I. My favorite thing was coming home from school and heading out to the barn for a few hours to work with the show calves. Looking back, I’m sure I spent more time with those cows than I did hanging out with friends,” she said.

Striving for Excellence

She added, “Even when I had a disagreement with my parents or siblings, or a bad day at school, I could go out to the barn and dissipate my troubles by washing and blowing out the calves.

Growing up with cattle taught me the basic lessons about hard work, which I’m grateful for today.”

She earned her bachelor’s degree at Washington State University in animal science with an emphasis in production management. She completed two internships; one with a Red Angus producer in South Dakota, and one with JBS Five Rivers. She credits her internships with helping her to learn to live outside of her comfort zone.

“Internships take you out of your comfort zone and make you try something different. They also teach you to learn different approaches to management strategies or operations. You learn to work with all types of people, and learn what makes them tick, what drives them, and what inspires them. At times, they were excellent humbling ex-

periences when I picked up a shovel to move corn dust or built fences in 100plus-degree weather while it’s unbearably humid,” Morcom stated.

Her internships helped her decide what she wanted to do, and she believes those experiences are priceless and should be pursued by others looking to get into, and stay in, the industry. “Go for jobs and internships outside of the area you grew up in, and soak up as much knowledge as you can. Ask the ‘why’ questions to understand the reason to why they make the decisions, or any insights they have. When or if you return home, the experience you had will be an invaluable asset to bring to the table at the family ranch or when starting your own business,” she said.

It was during her senior year in college that she was offered a position of a management trainee with JBS Five Rivers, and she jumped at the opportunity. “I knew everyone there, the culture and how the feedlot functions.

I knew that I could trust everyone there and feel safe. This was especially important to me at the time, since I was a single woman about to live in a strange city with no friends or family within 600 miles,” she explained.

All of the rations that are made are controlled using a computer. The program pulls ingredients from different bins and sends it all to the mixer.

This willingness to work together, trust each other, and support each other is what she focuses her objectives on as a manager. Her team has an impeccable safety record, they take pride in their work and they hold each other accountable while producing the best quality feed they can every day.

“I strive to continue to build a team mentality within the mill department so everyone works together and holds each other accountable for mistakes,” she said.

Even though she has a passion for the cattle industry, it’s the people who help fuel her. “I work with some of the best people anyone can ask for. They make the workplace fun, even on those nights you pull a long shift, and they will go the extra mile to help out,” Morcom stated.

That attitude is not one that she experienced growing up.

“I’ve seen this numerous times outside of the cattle feeding sector when I spent time in South Dakota. Growing up in western Washington, you couldn’t borrow the neighbor’s tractor or ask for a favor without shelling out an arm and a leg. In South Dakota, I saw neighbors helping each other, people lending a hand to get the job done, and communities getting together for a common cause – and no one asking for anything in return,” she said.

She added, “Don’t get me wrong. I like cattle – watching them grow, perform, analyzing data and seeing hard work pay off – but the people in this industry is why I do it.” ■

Red Angus bids farewell to Dawn Bernhard, junior programs coordinator, after 15 years

It takes a unique skill set to work with young people in today’s fast-paced, communication-driven society. Topping the list is energy, enthusiasm, the ability to adapt to new technology, planning, organization and a genuine interest in youth development. Red Angus employee Dawn Bernhard brought all of those skills to the Junior Red Angus (JRA) Association when she hired on as junior programs coordinator 15 years ago.

“It was a blessing in so many ways,” Bernhard said about the position. “It was a job and a breed I was excited about.”

Her position was unique in two ways.

First, Bernhard was the first RAAA employee whose job was to solely focus on the junior program.

“At the time, it was an internal position and it always fell to the bottom of someone’s to-do list,” explained Dr. Bob Hough, retired Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) executive secretary, who hired Bernhard. Hough credits Miriam Foshee and Joyce Tice, then RAAA Board members, who advocated for the part-time position.

RAAA Board of Directors’ decision to invest in the JRA program aligned with Red Angus’ second Core Policy: promoting the financial well-being of its members, and using this as a method for encouraging new membership.

“Our Junior program was unique in that it was focused on what Red Angus’ Core Policies are all about – making and training juniors to have profitable agriculture careers,” Hough said. “An easier route would have been to use the standard junior model that was centered around a heifer show – but it wouldn’t have been teaching them about a breed that was built upon performance and a commercial focus.”

Bernhard brought a breadth of agriculture and livestock judging experience to Red Angus, which she continued to foster in the JRA programs she directed.

“I’ve always wanted Red Angus parents to know that I would take care of their kids once they got to an event. That people wouldn’t hesitate to let their children participate in activities I was involved in.”

The second unique aspect about the junior programs coordinator position was that it was RAAA’s first satellite position. This allowed Bernhard to be a mom to her two children, Levi and Hannah, and to work alongside her husband, Steve, on their family farm near Algona, Iowa.

“Dawn wasn’t just about Red Angus,” pointed out Red Angus breeder Tena Ketchum from Plevna, Mont. “She was a very, very strong advocate for agriculture. She was preparing juniors to be well-rounded, not just for Red Angus, but for the ag industry.”

Ketchum first met Bernhard at the 2002 JRA Round-Up in Montana when her oldest daughter, Cele, was just 9 years old. “I watched Dawn in awe as she organized juniors, ran contests and kept everyone on schedule,” Ketchum said.

“She unselfishly devoted herself to youth in the program. She always gave and always had lots of energy.”

Bernhard was always on the lookout for young people that would step forth and become leaders. Ketchum’s two children, Cele and Jaclyn, developed leadership skills in the JRA and later served on the Junior Board.

“She influenced many kids and encouraged them to get involved, whether it was with Round-Up, Loaded 4 Leadership, Convention or the Young Stockman Program. She just believes in youth,” Ketchum said.

Beyond encouraging leadership, Bernhard took a sincere interest in how juniors were doing and where they were at in life after leaving the junior program.

“She cared about those kids,” Ketchum said.

“Dawn has always lived by Red Angus’ Core Policies. One of the biggest advantages is that these kids can learn the Core Policies at a young age and go into adulthood and the future of the breed knowing them.”

As a parent, Ketchum found value in the JRA program because of what it exposed her daughters to in terms of travel, meeting breeders, developing leadership qualities and applying skills that they learned through Round-Up contests to their individual programs.

As Bernhard closes her employment chapter with RAAA, she said it will be difficult to distance herself from the JRA. “My longing to still be involved is there,” she said. “It’s been a family for me for a long time and it’s tough to break away from that.” ■

Many people consider the strategy of hiring someone as an independent contractor (IC) versus an employee, as an automatic savings for the ranch. Unfortunately, the IRS has realized this strategy as well – not just in the ag industry, but in all industries. As a result, this type of practice has become an audit focus within recent years.

It’s important to understand how to identify what establishes an employee or IC relationship, what your potential risks are if misclassified, and how can you minimize the cost of hiring employees.

The savings from classifying a worker as IC can add up quickly.

When hiring an employee, the ranch will be responsible to pay the employer’s match of FICA taxes, withhold and remit employees’ Federal and State income and FICA taxes, retirement plan costs if applicable, workers’ compensation costs, and potential unemployment taxes if the ranch pays in excess of $20,000 in wages any quarter during the year. Clearly, the savings of having a worker being classified as an IC is tempting. However, if it’s questionable, you should step back and analyze the factors that will help you determine the proper classification.

The IRS has a list of 20 different factors they consider in determining employee versus IC status. Some factors carry more evidence than others and no single factor will override another. The analysis is based solely on the facts and circumstances of the relationship.

Below are some of the factors to consider in no particular order or importance.

1. Instructions – Does the employer retain the ability to instruct how particular tasks will be performed to attain a desired result? If so, how much detail does the employer provide to the worker?

Does the worker have to obtain approval from the employer before diverting from certain actions?

2. Intent of the Parties & Written Contracts – A written agreement describing the worker as an IC will show the parties’ intent of the relationship to be an IC. However, a written agreement will not override the substance of the relationship if the facts and circumstances determine an employer-employee relationship.

3. Investment in Equipment or Facilities – Does the worker provide his own equipment to get the job done? Does the worker provide his own materials and supplies to complete the job? If so, there is a good case for IC status.

4. Financial Risk Assumed by the Worker – Is the worker at risk of having financial loss if the work is not done properly? If a worker is only paid a fixed amount and is not at risk of financial loss there is a good case for employee status.

5. Permanency of Employment â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Does the worker perform duties for the ranch on a continuing basis? This is not to say that part-time employees are ICs. This is a case where other facts and circumstances must be weighed to determine the workerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s employment status.

Keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list. These factors and the facts and circumstances of each relationship will determine the proper status.

The risks of incorrect classification can be costly. If the IRS prevails in such a case, the business owner will likely face numerous costs.

The IRS will assess late or incorrect filing penalties related to payroll reports such as 943s for payroll taxes, W-2s reporting wages to employees, the related W-3, and the 940 relating to unemployment, if applicable.

Further, there could be potential issues from a State Department of Labor (DOL) aspect. If the owner incorrectly classified a worker as an IC they would not have paid workersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; compensation on them.

The state DOL could assess penalties and interest to the ranch responsible for the worker.

If you must classify a worker as an employee, there are some ways in which you can minimize the costs to the ranch. One of the unique benefits afforded to the ag industry is that payroll taxes are not withheld from employees on non-cash compensation, nor are employers required to pay the matching FICA taxes on non-cash compensation. Non-cash compensation can be provided in a number of ways. Some examples include the following.

1. Commodity Wages: Calves or crops such as hay or grain if your ranch raises its own feed or has a farming component to its activities. There are specific rules to commodity wages so you should consult your tax advisor regarding this type of payment.

2. Housing Benefits: The rules can vary slightly depending on the type of entity the ranch uses so you should consult your tax advisor on the various rules and benefits of this arrangement.

3. Use of Ranch Vehicles for Personal Needs: This comes with potential downfalls from a potential liability standpoint if the ranch vehicle is involved in an accident while the employee is on personal business so this one should be approached with caution.

4. Commodity Compensation: As an example, beef that is raised by the ranch and provided to the employee and his family.

Although it may be tempting to classify all your workers as ICs it comes with a potentially large cost. If you have situations where a workerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s status is questionable, you should always document why you believe they are an IC versus an employee. Part of a good defense in any IRS or DOL audit is well-documented support for you positions.

Chase Honored for Weather Service Work Jack Chase of Leiter, Wyo., has been honored by the National Weather Service for 50 Years of Outstanding Service in the agency's Cooperative Weather Observer Program.

The agency presented Chase with the Edward H. Stoll Award for 50 years as a weather service volunteer. The award is named for the first person to serve 50 years in the volunteer observer program. Stoll was a cooperative observer for 76 years.

Chase, accompanied by his wife, Gini, received the award in October in the National Weather Service office in Billings, Mont. Chase began taking weather observations on Sept. 2, 1964, on his Buffalo Creek Red Angus

Ranch, 9 miles north of Leiter. The Chases are members of the Red Angus Association of America.

The National Weather Service's Cooperative Observer Program is more than a century old. More than 12,000 volunteer observers participate in the nationwide program providing daily reports on weather conditions.

Limon woman honored as master farm homemaker A Limon, Colo., ranch wife is the most recent honoree of the Colorado Master Farm Homemaker's (MFH) Guild. Cindy Frasier, who along with her husband Joe, raise commercial and registered Red Angus cattle on their ranch north of Limon, was honored at the Colorado MFH Guild's annual meeting in Colorado Springs.

Established in 1954, the MFH Guild's mission is to recognize rural women actively involved in agriculture or those retired from the farming or ranching industries. Honorees are selected on the basis of leadership, family life and community involvement.

Only recognized organizations may nominate eligible women who have given unselfishly of their time and service to their families and communities, while deriving 51 percent of their family income from agriculture.

The Lincoln County CattleWomen nominated Frasier for this prestigious award.

In addition to being a member of the CattleWomen's organization, Frasier has greatly impacted the lives of youth as a 4-H club general leader and by serving on the Lincoln County 4-H Foundation board.

Trained as a classical pianist, Frasier has given private piano lessons for over 40 years to more than 200 students. Numerous Frasier-trained students have chosen to make careers of their musical training, including one who has a master's degree in music therapy and another who was the stage manager for singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.

Frasier also served as a leader in the Colorado Young Mothers' Organization whose purpose is to coordinate activities which support and encourage the important roles young mothers have in the formation of their children's lives. Additionally, Frasier has been an ambassador for Common Ground, an organization featuring women with diverse agriculture backgrounds who use their experience as advocates for rural America in urban settings.

Frasier holds a degree in horticulture from Kansas State University. She and Joe are the parents of three grown children and the proud grandparents of two toddlers.

McPhee began to show cattle locally, then started going to the bigger sales and shows. She and her sisters were instrumental in marketing the cattle, attending bull sales and showing bulls at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. She and her family have also sent bulls to the Midland Bull Test in Montana.

McPhee has been a 4-H leader for five years, assisting the members with

hands-on work with their show cattle. They assemble and have mock show ring exposure, and she teaches the 4-Hers how to show and prepare their cattle for the upcoming fairs.

McPhee is now Vice President of the Beef Cattle Improvement Association and she has served as a national director for the Red Angus Association of America.

Berry named as top industry leader Clint Berry of Gainesville, Mo., was named to this year’s Top Ten Industry Leaders by Cattle Business Weekly.

Berry and his wife Jama, own and operate a cow-calf operation in southern Missouri. He is also a Superior Livestock representative and co-owner of

Allied Genetic Resources. Formerly, Berry served as the commercial marketing director for the Red Angus Association of America.

Berry has actively gained knowledge of all aspects of the beef industry and was the 2014 chairman of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Young Cattlemen’s Conference. Berry travels extensively working in seedstock bull procurement and marketing feeder cattle.

Sutherlin recognized by beef industry Lacey Sutherlin of Stevensville, Mont., was recognized by Cattle Business Weekly as one of this year’s Top Ten Industry Leaders.

Sutherlin is the director of marketing and sales at ORIgen, Inc., where she

assists producers with semen and embryo technology services and focuses on offering top customer service.

She and her husband Chad also own 3C Cattle and raise Red Angus and Angus cattle and grow hay and small grains in the Bitterroot Valley. Sutherlin is actively involved in state breed and industry organizations, and is making plans for a donor cow facility and liquid nitrogen business. ■

Lot 9, BCRR Pamela 390A, a March 18, 2013, daughter of Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P, sold to Mahlen Red Angus of Froid, Mont., for $7,500. She was consigned by Bullis Creek Ranch of Wood Lake, Neb., and stood second in her class in the Red Angus Junior Show.

The top embryo package was Lot 23 consigned by Klompien Red Angus of Manhattan, Mont. The embryos were sired

by FCC Rambo 502 and out of DKK Auburn P35. Ravishing Reds of North Platte, Neb., purchased the package for $2,250.

2015 National Red Angus Show It is almost time to start getting ready for the 2015 National Red Angus Show! The 2015 National Show will be held in October during the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) in Billings, Mont. Now is the time to be on the lookout for that â&#x20AC;&#x153;perfectâ&#x20AC;? heifer or bull and getting ready for the next show season! The National Show is open to all RAAA and JRA members who meet the membership criteria found in the Breederâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Guide.

Heifer Mart at NWSS In a time when the cowherd is expanding, the Heifer Mart is an exciting opportunity to market three to 10 heifers. This event is a great marketing outlet where breeders can sell heifers through private treaty. Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
