Where to Start with the Accolades of the Red Angus Cow? I have had a lot of unfinished thoughts as I prepare to write this column. The focus of this issue of the ARA is "The Red Angus Female." So bear with me as I take you down a journey of trashed ideas. A first thought was the "easy" take on the topic – a list of obvious benefits of the Red Angus cow. But when I went down that road, I realized quickly that I couldn't say anything different than what can be read in other articles and ads in this magazine. Time to go on to a more novel track of thinking. So, how about "the Red Angus female" in terms of women who have worked hard and made a difference in this breed? There have certainly been plenty of them. But then, there have been plenty of men, too. Why draw a distinction at this point? The success of Red Angus has to do with great people through the years. Idea No. 2 that didn't really get off the ground. Okay, how about looking at the juxtaposition of a matriarchal society and a Red Angus cowherd? Juxtaposition? Matriarchal society? Oh good grief... Strike three. (I wish I was out.) Got it! How about a bovine take on the discussion of the chicken and the egg – which came first, the embryo or the cow? Hmm. Another thought flat on its face. I'll cede the win to chickens and eggs when it comes to philosophy. Notice the increased desperation of ideas at this point. You think you're
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2015
desperate? You're just having to read this. Okay, how about the fact that this is the October issue and many cowherds across the nation are going through the weaning process? Those hard-working cows are saying goodbye to 2015 calves, then getting a much-needed break from the rigors of calf-rearing. Maybe I've found the angle! But, that doesn't address the fall calving herds and the cows who are just starting the journey. It also doesn't address that weaning time doesn't necessarily mean vacation time for cows, what with winter coming on. Another idea shot to the round file. Thinking of weaning makes me think of how far behind I'll be in the month of October. I'll have weaning weights to record, cow weights and body condition scores to record... data... data... data. Hmm... My mind is cycling back to something – that chicken or egg idea has popped into my head again. No yoke. (Get it? No "yoke." Like no joke? Oh my – I'm getting punchy.) But a philosophical question is forming. Okay, here it is – the question of the day: Is the Red Angus female great because of the data, or is the data great because of the Red Angus female? If I've got you thinking, that's great. If not, let's go back to square one. Grab a pen and paper and make a list of the benefits of the Red Angus female – or read on in this issue of the ARA and you'll find a lot of great reasons to value that Red Angus cow. ■

Red Angus Tools Build Better Females Good cows are the foundation of a strong herd, and the Red Angus breed has focused on emphasizing performance traits for building better females. With EPDs, ERTs, the HerdBuilder Index, Herd Navigator genomic testing and research centered on female attributes, maternal traits are truly in the cross hairs of the Red Angus Association of America and its stakeholders. We have a target and have set a course to provide the beef industry with the best genetic predictions for important maternal traits. At the numerous cattle industry events and educational programs across the country, experts have spoken to breeders about the need for added emphasis on maternal heterosis. The RAAA has long supported crossbreeding and using the Red Angus breed in mating systems that take advantage of the crossbred cow. Regardless in the size of an operation, maternal traits are indicators of success. For example, research has identified a 4.3 percent increase in pregnancy rate due to maternal heterosis. Failure to become pregnant is the No. 1 reason cows are culled from herds and the single, biggest expense to a commercial cow-calf operation is heifer retention. University and private research has also shown maternal heterosis can result in nearly 20 pounds of weaning weight, 30 to 40 pounds of carcass weight and a dramatic decrease in pre-weaning death loss. These are
10 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2015
major traits that can directly affect profitability. RAAA is encouraging breeders to look further into – and to collect more data on – maternal traits such as heifer pregnancy, calving ease score, cow weight, body condition and udder score. As we continue to build a larger database, the genetic prediction will become more valuable when making selection decisions. University of Georgia research suggests that udder quality is moderately heritable, meaning improvement can be made through genetic selection. Also, a major concern should be the stayability of females in the herd. Researchers and consultants are in complete agreement that, without a doubt, successful reproduction is the most important attribute of any successful operation. Building the better female takes more than good looks and charm; by considering maternal EPDs and indices, producers can make giant strides in cowherd productivity. When used in conjunction with excellent management, maternal trait EPDs and/or the HerdBuilder Index can be used to produce more marketable and heavier calves, and will allow for the more efficient use of labor and cut input costs. By diligently using the tools in the toolbox, commercial cattlemen have the opportunity to build and fine-tune a cow that can reap great rewards generation after generation. ■

Marketing Update
Congratulations to the 2015 winners of the prestigious Red Angus Grid Master Awards. A total of 14 loads of Red Angus FCCP-tagged cattle originating from eight progressive firms met the rigorous requirements to be deemed “Grid Master.”
by Harold Bertz, Director of Business Development
2015 Grid Master Award Winners Commercial Red Angus ranches and feed yards continue to demonstrate their ability to combine superior genetics with precise marketing to produce Grid Master Award winners. Only the most genetically capable carcass cattle have the ability to produce the quality end product in a high-yielding package.
Cattle enrolled in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) have the opportunity to aim for even more stringent standards in order to be labeled “Grid Master.”
The minimum qualification requirements for naturally fed cattle are: • Minimum of 30 head lot size • Minimum of 90% Choice and Prime • Maximum of 10% YG 4s • Minimum grid score of 100 Cattle that reach these prestigious goals will no doubt set the standard for carcass premiums on value-added marketing grids.

Join us for our 23rd Annual Spring Fling Sale on March 26, 2016! And Congratulations to DALLAS & SHILO! - Married August 1, 2015 -
Spring 2015 Weaning Worksheets Now is the optimal time to report weaning data on the Spring 2015 born calves. As a reminder post cards were sent out in August. Data may be reported online. Members may also request the weaning worksheets as a hard copy or request an Excel template to report data. To ensure data is included in the next National Cattle Evaluation (NCE), data is due back by the end of October. National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) Deadline: • Fourth Week in October for Paper Submissions • Last Week in October for Electronic Submissions
Avoid Reactivation Fees Females previously listed on the Fall Herd Inventory will be inactivated if a calf record or reason code (reason why there is no calf record) is not submitted for the year 2014. The National Office will send out a list of females that have been inactivated the last week in October. To avoid inactivation fees, please submit a 2014 calf record or reason code by December 1, 2015.
Fall Heifer Exposure Due in November The Heifer Exposure Inventory enables members to submit data which is a key factor in the Heifer Pregnancy EPD. This EPD is also a key component to the HerdBuilder Index, which can be used to evaluate your animals on one scale. Yearling Heifers 9 to 17 months of age appear on the prelisted inventory. They will be entering the herd inventory and will be subject to assessments in 2016. The information to report is: • Breeding season dates • Exposure information • Contemporary group designation (i.e Management group) • Disposal information (if applies) Contemporary group designation is used to characterize females that were given different opportunities to conceive. A few ways to distinguish might include: • A.I. only vs. A.I. plus clean-up bull • Pasture vs. dry lot development • Differences in nutrition ■

WHY?
DOES COLLIER DIAMOND C RANCH HAVE SO MANY BLACK BULLS TO Sell WHEN THEY ARE A RED ANGUS BREEDER? ANSWER: Since the very forward thinking founders of the RAAA allowed registered Black Angus bulls to be used to sire registered Red Angus cattle as a category 2. When the category 2’s produce a red offspring out of a category 1A, that resulting calf can also be registered as a 1A. The results are a new, broader based genetic pool for all Red Angus Breeders to select from.
BUT WHY?
HAS COLLIER DIAMOND C RANCH SPENT OVER TEN YEARS DOING THIS? ANSWER: It needed to be done. Red Angus and Black Angus are both Angus. They were registered together in one herd book before coming to the USA. Red Angus were not allowed to be registered when the (Black Only) American Angus Association was formed. Collier Diamond C Ranch wants to breed the best Angus that are red and to do that we felt the need to ‘steal’ some genetics from the narrow minded people in the Angus Association who excluded red cattle from the beginning. GIVE COLLIER DIAMOND C RANCH TWO MORE YEARS AND 90% OF OUR GROWING ANGUS COW HERD WILL BE RED. IT HAS BEEN OUR FIFTEEN YEAR PLAN TO BE RED WITH TOTALLY NEW AND UNIQUE GENETICS. OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH NORTHINE ANGUS IS A BIG PART OF THIS GREAT STORY AND OUR LATEST MOVE TO “ALL RED” ANGUS CATTLE.
OUR COMBINED JUBILEE PRODUCTION SALE WILL BE SATURDAY, MAY 6TH,2017.
NORTHLINE GFA CRUSH 16B JUST AS GOOD AS HE LOOKS! *Complete pedigree information can be found on any of the above bulls at http://redangus.org using the registration number or contact Collier Diamond C Ranch

JRA Junior Spotlight
Dee Sonstegard Memorial Scholarship Winner Announced The RAAA Junior Activities Committee is pleased to name Tristen Fulton of North Carolina as the recipient of the $500 college scholarship in memory of Dee Sonstegard.
Meet Me in Montana at the NILE!
Fulton, a JRA member from Lexington, North Carolina, is currently attending Iowa State University majoring in animal science. Her career goal is to become a veterinarian. The following excerpts from her scholarship application demonstrate her career ambitions and the role of Red Angus in her future. “I am a fifth-generation cattle breeder. In order to be successful both in and out of the show ring, I have learned how to identify, evaluate and select quality genetics in order to produce my own registered and commercial cattle. Upon completion of my college degree, I plan to work in an existing veterinary operation to gain valuable real-world experience with aspirations to eventually open my own practice. I would like to create a clinic with functional space available to incorporate educational opportunities within the local community. “In addition to my private practice, I envision utilizing my education and personal interests to continue building my own cow-calf operation incorporating both Hereford and Red Angus genetics. I plan to continue to participate in the beef industry as a seedstock and commercial cattle producer.”
As junior members from across the country gather in Billings, Montana, for the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE), there are many opportunities to meet up and network with fellow JRA members. Following the Junior Red Angus check-in on Wednesday, Oct. 14, the JRA board has planned a networking event at 4 p.m. MDT for members to meet other exhibitors while having some fun around the grounds. The National Red Angus Junior Show takes place on Thursday, Oct. 15 starting at 8 a.m. Then on Friday morning beginning at 9 a.m., the JRA board has organized two workshops and tours to advance your stockman knowledge and skills. We hope to meet you in Montana. A Unique Opportunity for a Double Benefit! You have a unique opportunity to acquire genetics from a foundation herd of the Red Angus breed while supporting the development of our junior program that not only benefits your herd – it benefits the junior program! As a tribute to Sal Forbes’ Legacy, this donation is being made by Beckton Red Angus. Place your bid for Pick of the 2015 Heifer Crop at Beckton Red Angus – that’s right, you get to pick from the
entire 2015 heifer crop! Proceeds will be donated to the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. designated for the RAAA’s Junior Program supporting leadership and education for the next generation of Red Angus youth. Online auction services provided by DVAuction. Visit DVAuction.com to place your bid on the Beckton Red Angus Pick of the 2015 Heifer Crop JRA Benefit. Gaines Joins Red Angus Association of America
Beth Gaines of Westmoreland, Kansas, was hired to fill the role as the RAAA Communications Coordinator.
“We are pleased to bring Beth onto the Red Angus team,” said Twig Marston, RAAA CEO. “Her extensive agricultural communications experience will be an asset to our organization. She understands the need for effective outreach to our customers and members as well as to our media partners. Her professional experiences will serve our organization very well.” Prior to joining RAAA, Gaines served the Kansas Department of Agriculture as the Director of Communications. She also was the editor of Grass & Grain, a regional weekly farm and ranch publication, for 16 years. In that role, she worked closely with farm and ranch families for feature content as well as helping regional livestock markets with their advertising needs. “I’m looking forward to working daily with beef producers, serving the Red Angus membership and helping educate cattlemen everywhere about the important role Red Angus genetics can play in their ranching operations,” Gaines said. Gains will attend to the communication needs of the Association and, in addition to providing the weekly eNews updates for the membership and the Junior Red Angus members, she will work closely and extensively with the Red Angus affiliate associations. “It is important to have regular communication with our state and regional affiliates,” said Gaines. “Making sure that the breeders and the members have the tools they need to tell the Red Angus story effectively is important to the overall success of the breed.” Gaines will serve as the staff contact for the Affiliate Grant Program and will act as the liaison to help affiliates understand AGP requirements and successfully complete the application for grant funds. She will also aid with the development of ads for placement in regional publications that will provide continuation of the national campaign messaging. Affiliates may contact Gaines for additional marketing assistance, including scheduling affiliate eBlasts to the membership as needed. “I look forward to getting to know the members across the country better and learning about each affiliate and their activities,” she said. “We have a dynamic and growing association. Right now, more people than ever want to learn about what Red Angus can do for their breeding programs. I’m excited to be a part of this chapter and help shape the future of the breed.” A native Kansan, Gaines was raised on a diversified crop and livestock operation. She has three children, all of whom have been active in 4-H and FFA. She will work from her home office in Westmoreland and can be reached at beth@redangus.org or (940) 387-3502 ext. 17. n

Herd Navigator Charts Journey to Restored Cowherd by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
Keith Ham was following his usual rancher routine on the morning of Oct. 3, 2013. “I was just doing the normal fall projects getting ready for the winter months,” he explained. The Hams were ready for cooler weather after a couple of weeks of warmer-than-normal temperatures in the mid-80s to low-90s. And, like other cattle producers in the area, they had no idea what was just around the corner. Winter Storm Atlas Weather forecasts suggested a cool down and moisture. Snow was expected but not quite in the capacity of the nearly 2 feet that would later be measured. It was mid-evening that early October day when the clouds began to roll in. The big flakes continued the following day, full of moisture and bearing down on power lines and building structures. Hams lost most of the trees in their shelter belts and spent the following days without electricity. But that was the least of their worries. By the end of the four-day blizzard – later named Winter Storm Atlas – tens of thousands of livestock in the region had been buried in snow drifts, and additional cattle died later as a result of pneumonia and other storm-related hardships. When a storm of this impact hits, it is unlikely that many animals can make it through no matter the breed or, in this case, even the species of the animal. The Hams, like many others in western South Dakota, lost 50 percent of their cows. Fortu-
nately, they had already weaned their calves and they had better protection than the cows that were still grazing summer pasture. A Century of Ranching Having been in operation just shy of 100 years, the Ham Ranch – located just east of Caputa, South Dakota – runs a cow-calf operation consisting of Red Angus-Simmental-cross cows. Utilizing Red Angus genetics for an emphasis on highly maternal females, the Hams also take advantage of the hybrid vigor that the Simmental influence brings into the herd and use those cattle as feeders. “Over the last several years we have retained ownership of our calves as fats. We also have irrigated alfalfa ground. In the summer we rent pasture and run the cattle on Forest Service ground,” explained Ham. He and his wife Linda raised their family on the ranch and recently welcomed their son Morgan as the fourth-generation Ham to ranch there.
Hams DNA profile their replacement heifers before they enter the herd in order to identify those heifers that will make the most productive cows.

Herd Navigator Charts Journey to Restored Cowherd
Herd Restoration Now two years post Atlas, the Hams have almost rebuilt their entire herd, starting with bred heifers gifted from their seedstock supplier and his neighbors. “With the monetary donations we received from the Rancher Relief Fund, the government, Linda's employer and one of our neighbors, we were able to purchase additional bred heifers so we are pretty close to our normal numbers of over 200 head of cattle. We also held back all our heifer calves from the 2014 calving season to help rebuild our herd, said Ham. With their ranch now fully stocked, they are focusing their priorities to maintain quality in the herd and make good genetics even better. The Hams have opted to begin incorporating information gleaned from the Red Angus Association of America’s Herd Navigator DNA test to achieve that purpose. Renewal and Hope Made available in late 2014, Herd Navigator evaluates each female’s DNA profile providing vital genetic information on tested Red Angus-influenced commercial females. Each female then has a genetic panel built both on an indi-

Ham sees Herd Navigator as a gate into the future of optimum genetic selection within his operation.

Herd Navigator Charts Journey to Restored Cowherd “This will be the first year that we have used Herd Navigator,” said Ham. “I had the DNA testing done on the heifers and plan on using bulls in the future that will correspond with the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices. I will continue the process to DNA test the heifers in the future until our whole herd has been DNA tested.” They hope that the Herd Navigator will help them identify the replacement heifers that will make superior cows. The Hams found that the information gathered proved useful in their mating choices during A.I. season. “DNA is a thing of the future. We want to try to breed more females who show more fertility potential to highfertility-type bulls for our replacement herd. Likewise, I will put the females that show more carcass traits with a bull proven to have higher carcass merit.” In addition to the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices, parental verification and analysis of all EPD traits are included in Herd Navigator as long as the potential sires have been tested with the RA50K test. Ham is optimistic concerning the future of his herd and the potential role their ranch will play in the commercial industry.

Efficient, fertile and low-maintenance Red Angus cows thrive on the plains of western South Dakota. “Down the road, DNA will continue to improve and we’ll be able to pick cattle who are more resistant to diseases.” He added, “I am one who is willing to try new technology and I think Herd Navigator will improve EPDs and genetics at a faster pace to advance the quality of our herds.” n

Red Angus Females – The Logical Cowherd Choice The popularity of the Red Angus female continues to increase and ranchers appreciate her work ethic and no-nonsense manner of raising a calf. She simply does her job and does it well year after year after year. She is the logical breed of choice for profitability, convenience and longevity no matter the criteria.
By The Numbers
In order to assist producers in identifying genetics that will proliferate profitable females, the Red Angus Association of America offers a suite of EPDs to simplify the bull-buying process: HerdBuilder Index Producers selecting bulls to develop profitable replacement females can incorporate the HerdBuilder Index into their bull selection decisions. The purpose of an index is to estimate differences in an operation’s overall profitability resulting from a particular selection decision. While the process of calculating an index is very complex, the result is very simple to implement and provides producers with a consistent tool built on a scientific, unbiased foundation. As the name indicates, implementation of the HerdBuilder Index will assist producers in building profitable herds. The HerdBuilder Index is built using the following production scenario: • Red Angus bulls mated to cows and heifers • Replacement heifers retained from within the herd • All remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid
44 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2015
Given that replacement heifers are retained, significant influence is placed on the obvious maternal EPDs of Stayability, Heifer Pregnancy and Calving Ease. Additionally, with all remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid, Marbling, Yield Grade and growth EPDs impact the HerdBuilder index. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD Cow-calf producers know that profit begins with reproduction. Producers who can count on a higher percentage of pregnant heifers will have a larger number of replacements that they can cash crop. The Red Angus Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at 2 years of age. Calving Ease Direct (CED) and Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) Calving ease is a trait of major economic impact. Heifers that experience calving problems require additional labor and are less likely to rebreed. Red Angus completely describes calving ease with Direct (CED) and Maternal (CEM) EPDs. Milk The Milk EPD predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal's daughters and is expressed by the weaning weight of their calves. Red Angus females are known for optimal milk production.
Red Angus Females – The Logical Cowherd Choice
Maintenance Energy (ME) Annual cowherd feed costs represent producers' largest expense, and simply maintaining cows’ body weight and condition accounts for 65 to 70 percent of that total. Red Angus' mature cow Maintenance Energy (ME) EPD arms producers with a tool to help keep feed costs in check. Efficient, easy-fleshing Red Angus replacements help producers make the most of available forage. Stayability Females that stay in the herd reduce replacement rate and provide more valuable heifers to sell – a huge economic driver for cow-calf producers. Red Angus customers have the advantage of a Stayability EPD which predicts a bull’s ability to sire daughters that remain productive past the age of 6.
Rancher Prerequisites
Not all of Red Angus’ merits are measured with EPDs but traits that aid in easier management and less labor are valuable to ranchers and indirectly affect profitability. Disposition The value of the docile disposition of the Red Angus female is one of her shining qualities. Ranchers appreciate profit through easier handling, better conception rates, faster gains, higher USDA quality grade and fewer dark cutters. Maternal The Red Angus cow is indisputably known for her excellent mothering ability and maternal traits. Her strong natural instinct to care for her newborn gets the calf up and nursing minutes after birth – and nourished with essential colostrum.
Udder Structure Another trait that is a significant contributor to maternal environment is udder conformation. Beginning at calving time, females that possess proper udder conformation are better equipped to provide essential nutrition to the newborn calf. Further development of the calf is dependent on the ability of the female to avoid mastitis; thus, allowing her to produce milk at her genetic level. The combination of these two successes provides females a greater opportunity to remain productive for an extended lifespan. Solid Pigmentation Red hide color improves heat tolerance for both Southern cowherds and summer feedlots. Additionally, Red Angus do not carry diluter genes, therefore, there’s no chance of getting gray calves when Red Angus are mated to Continental cattle. The solid pigmentation also greatly reduces sunburned udders and eye problems. Naturally Polled Red Angus are naturally polled which translates into profit by eliminating dehorning labor and stress on the cattle.
Opportunities
Herd Navigator Now, more than ever, producers are consciously making the correct decisions when it comes to selecting their replacement females. Through Red Angus’ newly released Herd Navigator DNA test, profit-demanding producers now have the opportunity to obtain a genetic assessment on Red Angus-sired commercial females. For a minimal $25 per head, the Herd Navigator evaluates each female’s DNA profile and assesses each trait in which RAAA calculates EPDs, including HerdBuilder and GridMaster Indices, thus providing commercial producers with a roadmap for cowherd success. 46 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2015

Her Body Through the Ages
For optimum conception and calving rates, it is important to provide adequate nutrition at key points during the year. by Laura Mushrush, Assistant Editor, Drovers CattleNetwork (Reprinted from the April issue of Drovers CattleNetwork and June issue of Cow/Calf Producer.)
“If momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” Chances are you’ve heard this statement before – whether it was a sticker slapped on a minivan bumper or joked about as some lighthearted advice. But in the cow-calf business, it rings true – especially when it comes to the body condition of your breeding females. According to University of Missouri Extension Beef Nutrition Specialist Justin Sexten, keeping her body in proper shape is going to take year-around up-keep, with some points in time being more crucial than others. Grow Baby, Grow According to Sexten, the most important time for her to have the highest body-condition score (BCS) is when she calves. Not only does hitting this condition target play a key role in her success for the entire year, it also affects the lifetime of her calf.
Since 75 percent of fetal growth occurs within the last two months of gestation, cows have to be receiving adequate nutrition to support healthy development.
“This means she was on a rising plane of nutrition during a crucial fetal development period of her calf,” he explained. “Young cows and heifers should have a BCS of 6, and more mature cows should be at a 5.” Since 75 percent of fetal growth occurs within the last two months of gestation, cows have to be receiving adequate nutrition to support healthy development. Research from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has shown that calves born to cows receiving supplementation prior to giving birth had significant weight advances throughout their lives when compared to calves born to cows that didn’t have extra nutritional TLC. And the higher BCS is two-fold, since
58 American Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2015
the nutrient requirements needed to provide adequate milk are going to take a toll on her weight. “A problem that occurs is from calving to breeding; it is nearly impossible to add body condition,” Sexten said. “Cows reach peak milk production 60 to 70 days after calving, and if you’re trying to increase her BCS at that time, those nutrients are going to go straight out of the udder and into the calf.” Keeping Tabs There are a number of things producers can benefit from in tracking information on their cow herds, such as birthweights. But according to Sexten, keeping tabs on her BCS at calving is a must-do — regardless of what kind of recordkeeping system a producer has. “The best indicator of future reproductive success is her BCS at calving,” he saids. “When it comes time to do pregnancy checking in the fall for a spring-calving female, results will be highly linked to this.”

Her Body Through the Ages Sexten also said it’s useful to record her BCS at breeding, especially if a recording was not taken at calving. This way, producers have a benchmark on which cows were within the acceptable range. If conception rates aren’t where they should be, producers have that key information to fall back on when trying to figure out what went wrong.
“If a cow is at a BCS of 5 at breeding, from a nutritional standpoint she is conditioned enough to rebreed,” he explained. “If she has a BCS of 4 at that time, she will be marginal on ability to rebreed.” When it comes to younger females, first-calf heifers to 3-year-old cows are going to need the most TLC since
they are still growing at that point. According to Sexten, producers should shoot for this age group to have a calving BCS of 6. “With the price of replacement heifers right now, producers can’t afford to take the young-cow nutrition program lightly,” he says.

Her Body Through the Ages
Minimum Maintenance On the flip side, her lowest body condition will be at weaning when she says goodbye to her calf. However, adequate BCS is going to vary greatly, depending on the female’s age, milk production and the plane of nutrition she received with calf at side. He also recommended recording another BCS on the cowherd at this point in time or during pregnancy checking. “A cow can get to a BCS of 4, but letting a young cow get that thin will reduce her ability to rebreed, he said. “Expect her to lose 100 pounds, or one full BCS, during her entire period of lactation. To extend or optimize forage and feed resources, consider sorting cows by BCS. Condition group management allows producers to prioritize nutrients to young and thin cows.
To extend or optimize forage and feed resources, consider sorting cows by BCS. “Body condition scoring is the best management tool producers have. Tracking condition changes over time provides producers the opportunity to manage nutritional needs of the cow herd without gathering the cattle, since
BCS is simply viewing cattle,â€? he concluded. “I recommend writing a score down at these important production landmarks because producers looking at the cattle every day cannot see the loss or gain over time.â€? â–

Y3Bar Livestock & Diamond H Farms are proud to oer Lass at the 2015 Red Roundup Sale. A standout since birth, Lass has continually impressed us with her tremendous capacity, excellent udder and sweet disposition. A true powerhouse, she has loads of strength and muscle expression, but maintains a feminine look. Lass is sired by Stout, the 2010 Denver Champion and the full brother to Cowboy Cut. We have used both Cowboy and Stout for several years on our farm. Their solid paternal genetics have proven themselves continually as their daughters are coming up as the backbone in our herd. Her dam, 30W had a fantastic show record as a calf with Howe’s prior to being purchased by Kuntz’s at Agribition. We were fortunate enough to purchase 30W, a daughter of Bar E-L Ribeye 103R, in their 2012 dispersal. With her big hip and sound feet, Lass will be the kind of mama cow that will raise you herd sires!
Y3Bar Livestock & Diamond H Farms are proud to oer Firey at the 2015 Red Roundup Sale. Firey is a heifer that will be sure to catch your eye on sale day. This attractive, cherry red female is as pretty as can be. Her sire, Cowboy Cut needs no introduction with his impressive records in the show ring and as an AI sire. Cowboy is a full sibling to our herd sire Red Lazy MC Stout 139U. Their solid paternal genetics have proven themselves continually as their daughters are coming up as the backbone in our herd. Her dam, 83S was selected from the Elk Meadows dispersal and is a model Angus female. I have no doubt that 18B will be a total milking machine like her mama! We are super excited for this heifer’s future. With her length and strong top line, Firey is sure to stand out in the show ring or as a top cow in your herd.

Over the years, we have witnessed clients making some of the following assumptions in the various areas that we practice, costing them dearly after-the-fact. “When I die I’m just going to leave the ranch and all my other assets to my four kids equally. They’ll all get along and everything will be fine. After all, I did my will online and they said it was bullet-proof.” This comment will only lead to very costly mistakes and much emotional distress for a family. What Dad forgot to think about is that of his four kids; two live in the city. One lives in a small town near the ranch, but works for the local co-op and helps with ranch duties occasionally on weekends. The other is actively working on the ranch on a daily basis. The dynamics of this situation are amazingly complex and

common real-life circumstances. The ways in which making this assumption can blow-up are too many to count. The complexities that come with passing a ranch to the next generation, including financially, legally and emotionally, are like walking through a minefield blindfolded. It’s dangerous to go without sound financial and legal advice. It’s also never safe to assume that everything will be equal among all heirs. “I can handle the payroll for the ranch. It’s simple and professionals are expensive. Besides, QuickBooks practically does it all for me.” While your accountant’s time isn’t free, clients are often surprised how inexpensive payroll services are. Depending on the size of the client, it’s not uncommon to prepare a year’s worth of payroll services that is comparable to the cost of an annual subscription to the QuickBooks payroll module. However, QuickBooks won’t help you when the worker’s comp or unemployment auditor arrives on your doorstep. Keeping up with the immense amount of tax laws related to payroll reporting is not an easy task. Having someone that does payroll on a daily basis adds a
great deal of peace of mind that you’re not missing a recent law change. When you do miss that law change you’ll most likely receive a letter imposing fines and penalties which can add up quickly. “I assumed the tax law was the same as it was last year. I went ahead and bought that new $200,000 tractor so I could write it all off and pay zero taxes. As an added bonus, I won’t need to do any year-end tax planning.” This comment is full of missteps. The tax law is very rarely the same from one year to the next. While there are many pieces of legislation that have been on a continual track of being extended each year, they have not been automatic extensions. In one case, Congress did not finalize the tax law until the January after the tax year it applied to. The next question is whether that new tractor was really needed or if it was purchased just for the tax deduction. Believe it or not, we like to see our clients pay some tax each year over a long stretch of time. The alternative is to pay large amounts in one year and nothing the next year and so on, like being on a “tax rollercoaster” with wasted deductions. This makes cash flow planning and budgeting difficult. What you may have also missed is the fact that the bookkeeper inadvertently booked all the costs for that new machine shed you built in supplies, and repair and maintenance expense. Consequently, instead of a large immediate deduction, you’ll get to depreciate those costs over 20 years, which can drastically affect your taxable income. There are simply too many items to overlook when doing your own year-end tax planning. While it may seem like there’s an opportunity to save some money by avoiding professional services, it may not always be so. In the long-run, professional advice is an investment both financially and emotionally. ■ Michael Flerchinger is a CPA with The Nichols Accounting Group located in Oregon and Idaho.
