Convention Infused with Red Angus Excitement The Red Angus Association of America is a thriving organization. I've seen it in sale barns, I've heard it from feedlot managers, I've seen it on my TV and I've seen it in pastures across the nation. Most recently, I saw and felt the power of a thriving organization while attending the Red Angus National Convention in Grapevine, Texas.
The National Convention is a great opportunity to network with other breeders, to hear committee presentations, and ask questions about Association programs. This 2015 Convention was a fantastic effort by our CEO, staff, committee chairs and members. From the Commercial Cattlemen's Symposium to the general business meetings, the amount of information, stimulating conversation and Red Angus enthusiasm was impressive. I've grown up in the Red Angus breed, and I remember National Conventions from the time I was very young. I don't remember much about the locations, but I remember the polyester bell bottoms, the wide hat bands and the Naugahyde jackets (Oh, the styles of our forefathers ...)! I've been to many conventions through the years, but I don't remember any that I've walked away from feeling more optimistic than I did this year. There are

incredible things going on in Red Angus right now! We heard a very positive administrative report from CEO Twig Marston. Our breed continues to grow in terms of THR inventory and membership and, it appears that, as we hoped, America is "Restocking Red." In addition to growth in numbers, Gary Fike, director of commercial marketing, reported that the value of Red Angus cattle leads the pack. Third-party studies on video auction sales show that Red Angus are achieving market-topping prices. Fike also reported on grids and alliances that will continue to build value for commercial Red Angus cattle. The marketing team is going full steam ahead knocking on doors and finding opportunities for Red Angus genetics! We heard updates on research taking place across the nation that involves Red Angus. Research with practical application such as red vs. black hair color at Mississippi State and the possibility of development of a hoof, foot and leg structure EPD from Kansas State. We heard about the "next generation" of Red Angus fertility evaluation from Colorado State. Finally, we heard about genomic predictions using haplocyte information. Yes, haplocytes! (Okay, who am I kidding? I really don't know what that one means, but Dr. Spangler at the University of Nebraska does, and he's making great progress!)

Board Commentary I addressed the Convention attendees with a message of perseverance as we transition to a new database. Part of what makes perseverance such a valuable trait is that there isn't a timeline on it. We have a Board and staff who are committed to the service of this breed and they are working diligently to conduct the business of the Association and service to members. There is great value in the new database in terms of security and functionality. Members and commercial cattlemen will be able to access more information with greater reliability and ease of use. Great things take time, and I ask for the continued perseverance and patience of all in making this monumental transition.
“Great things take time, and I ask for the continued perseverance and patience of all in making this monumental transition. The Convention was blessed with the attendance and involvement of several young people in the Loaded 4 Leadership program. A bright future is ahead and I'm looking forward to seeing more and more young people growing through the Junior Red Angus leadership development programs!
8 American Red Angus Magazine â– November 2015
I could go on and on with more exciting topics, but I will close here. I would like to end with a "welcome" to Sam Lorenzen as our newest Board member from Oregon: a "welcome back" to reelected Board members Bruce Ketchum, Kevin Miller, Raymond Prescott and Johnny Rogers. Finally, I want to recognize and thank retiring Board member Leonard Wood for his six years of service on the Board. So with Convention 2015 in the books, I encourage to join us in Oklahoma City in 2016. I can't promise any wide hat bands or polyester bell bottoms, but I can promise that the work in progress will make 2016 a Convention you won't want to miss!

Sleek, long-bodied and neatly designed best describes lot 4. She hails from one of the most note-worthy and money generating bloodlines in the Red Angus breed, Brown MS Abigrace L7730. Prime Abby’s dam was purchased in the legendary R.A. Brown Ranch dispersal of 2013 where the Abigrace family dominated the auction prices all day and many reputable Red Angus programs got the chance to add one to their herd. Cattlemen Convene for Successful Convention Many positive vibrations came out of our recent National Red Angus Convention in Grapevine, Texas. Commercial cattlemen, members, guests and industry folks all came together to share ideas, listen to a wide array of speakers and carry on the business of the Association. The Red Angus Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) hosted a wonderful evening of food and festivities. Enthusiasm for Red Angus was sensational and the deep commitment for the breed was evident at every event. The awards banquet was appropriately a magnificent display of the many talents we are so fortunate to have within our Red Angus breed. Every award winner had that special talent, that little extra something, that willingness to serve, that makes these presentations so very, very special to both the individual and to the breed. The RAFI dinner has quickly risen to a highlight event of the convention. Capping the night of food and fellowship was one of north Texas’ outstanding musical groups. The most evident recognition was the good work RAFI has accomplished. Presentations from all four research projects updated the audience on advancing our science behind the breed. Their messages varied with the topics they investigate but the theme was united that Red Angus is in the forefront of funding projects that can make real and lasting effects on genetic evaluation. The presence of Junior Red Angus Association Board members also symbolized the RAFI commitment to future leadership of the breed. These six outstanding youth are leaders through and through, their dedication is outstanding, and their talent abounds. Speaking of youth support, a special thank you goes out to the Beckton Red Angus staff for donating the Pick of the 2015 Heifer Calves. This opportunity is being auctioned online at DVAuction.com with the final bidding date set for Nov. 11. Contact Kim Heller, Junior Activity Coordinator, for more details. a formal mixture of education and breed business. The well-attended Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium was an outstanding group of speakers. From banking and economics to in vitro fertilization to cowherd nutrition to building future productive cowherd and markets, the speakers’ topics melted together the complex world we work in. The business meeting was dominated by committee reports, panel discussions, learning sessions and elections. All seven of the Member Committees shared ideas and thoughts with the membership. The Alliance Committee had an insightful discussion that engaged the members in present and future marketing concepts. Now and into the future you will see staff and members working side-by-side to expand the demand for FCCP yellowtagged calves, working with feeder calves marketing services and evolving our relationships with packers. The marketing efforts of the Association are laser focused to increase the demand for Red Angus genetics throughout the food chain to the consumer. The election of Board members and the President reflected of the many talented people that have volunteered their time and talents to serve the breed. Thank you to all candidates that ran. The Board is filled with members dedicated to overseeing the fasting growing beef breed association in America. I extend my gratitude to those that made the 2015 convention a success – the sponsors that manned their booths and shared their products, the Association staff that spared nothing to please the membership, the speakers that shared knowledge and the attendees that gave their time to service and learning. Everyone should plan to attend next year’s event in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mark your calendars – it is well worth the time and effort. ■

by Dary Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing
Red Angus Poised to Assume Greater Market Share The 2015 Red Angus Convention is a wrap! What a great event it was! I could sense the positive energy about the breed at my first convention. Those of you who were not there missed an excellent Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium lineup of speakers on Wednesday. It was my pleasure to meet many of you; but there were several of you that I did not get the opportunity to interact with. I hope to see you at the next Red Angus sale, Summit or other event. I was telling folks that I have not been this excited about my (relatively) new position at RAAA since I left college in 1983 for my first job as a County Extension Agricultural Agent. That’s 32
years ago. I don’t know where that time disappeared to, but it sure went fast. And it’s going faster, just like Mom told me it would when I got older. But, things get better with age, right? At least that’s what I keep telling myself. With all sincerity, I have enjoyed these past 10 months working with seedstock producers and commercial ranchers. There is nothing more satisfying to me in my work life than getting the opportunity to speak with cattlemen and women, and listen to their stories and how they came into the Red Angus breed. It is an exciting place to be. Probably what “turns my crank” the most is how complete this breed is; from
maternal traits to the rail. Red Angus cattle have a great reputation in the industry right now. When I mention that I work for Red Angus, I only get positive comments about the breed. One could argue the cattle have always had a great reputation, but due to the diligence of breeders and the Association, the breed has continued to climb to new heights. And here’s why I think it will impact the beef industry and take over a greater market share over the next several years: 1) The core principles champion the value of crossbreeding. We’ve all seen the shortcomings that come with straight breeding in commercial herds. Whether that breed mix includes other English breeds, continentals, or Bos indicus cattle, there’s a positive synergy gained. The cattle work anywhere. 2) Scientifically based data is embraced. We need to continue to embrace it, indices included. As much as some people don’t like or believe in them, they work. 3) Identification. Our FCCP and Allied Access tagging programs are paramount to the breed’s success. Identifying Red Angus genetics will continue to DRIVE VALUE. There is no question about it. Whether ranchers are looking for replacement females or feeder cattle, their value has been quantified in the market place with the Superior Livestock Auction data proving Red Angus-sired cattle sold for a higher price than all other breed groups. In order to grow demand for both purebred and commercial Red Angus cattle, we need your help in promotion of the use of the tags. We can’t do it all; but with all of us, we can.
Dr. David L. Lalman, Department of Animal Science associate professor, Oklahoma State University, spoke at the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium on cow efficiency.
You bet I’m excited! I’m happy to be a part of this breed. Thanks for having me. Thanks for the opportunity. I hope to meet even more of you very, very soon! ■

Member Services Update Thank you for your patience and perseverance as we transition into the new database, REDSPro. We are excited to introduce a new chapter of the Red Angus Association of America. REDSPro will have many new looks and options to it. This includes, but is not limited to, registration numbers and papers, genetic defect statement, ratios of single head contemporaries, statements and non-member searches.
What will replace the progeny averages on the registration paper? The DNA that has been submitted for offspring, sire and dam, will be printed in place of the progeny averages. This includes genetic defects, parentage and Genomic Merit.
The registration process has required that the Genetic Defect Statement be checked at time of submission of animals for a registration number. The Genetic Defect Statement was to be checked as acknowledgement that the producer’s herd was observed for genetic defects. This was put into place when genetic defects were becoming a concern back in 2009, but since producers have become very familiar with genetic defects and the regulations that have been put into place to monitor carrier animals. Therefore, RAAA no longer feels that checking this box should cause a hang up with the registration process. Members will no longer be required to check the genetic defect statement box.
X
REDSPro brings new looks to processes, reports and registration papers. One of the first changes that will be noticed is the increase in range of registration numbers. The reason for this is animals that are considered foreign (UAN, USM, etc.) now will receive a Red Angus number, and then will be cross referenced with their respective registration number from other breed. Also, animals that are reported as “dead calves” will receive a registration number as well. The way that the new database works is to document every detail for easy reference at a later date. The last registration numbers that were processed in the old database have registration number values of 1.7. The animals that are currently being processed in REDSPro start with the value of 3.4. The second change members will notice will be the look of registration papers. The progeny averages have been removed from being printed on the registration paper. Some might find this valuable information for the registration paper, but does change almost instantly after being printed because of additional progeny being reported. Therefore, progeny averages can be looked up via Animal Search or the Herd Management Tab.
16 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2015
For animals that qualify for “Category 3 HybRED” the word “HybRED” will be printed at the top of the registration paper. This will indicate that the HybRED requirements have been met, and the animal can be marketed as a HybRED. This is the same as the animals that qualify for “Category 3 Angus Plus.”
Third, previously animals that were in single-head contemporaries have received ratios of 100. We have found that this is misrepresenting the animal as average when in fact it may not be because it is assumed – based off of the ratio – that the animal is above or below average when compared to others within the contemporary group.
Member Services Update However, it truly means that it ranked 1 out of 1. Now animals that are in single-head contemporaries will not receive a ratio value. Fourth, statements have been printed using REDSPro starting with the September Invoice, third THR Installment Billing. Finally, the Non-Member Search will allow members or other non-members to search by account number, name and address. This non-member account number becomes important to process transfers quickly since transfers are designed with real-time processing in REDSPro. This will be an enhancement to come in the near future.
THR Calendar Reminder Females previously listed on the Fall Herd Inventory will be inactivated if a calf record or reason code (reason why there is no calf record) is not submitted for the year 2014. The National Office will send out a list of females that have been inactivated the last week in October. To avoid inactivation fees, submit a 2014 calf record or reason code by Dec. 1, 2015.

DNA Updates Please be aware of new prices for a select DNA tests effective Nov. 1, 2015. The new price for GGP-HD is $90 and hair sample submissions have been increased by $2 per sample. Weaning is the optimal time to submit DNA samples. Bull and female selection process are in the works and DNA tests can help with the selection process by proving parentage, identifying genetic defects and enhancing EPDs. Beat the sale rush and chaos by submitting early. If you have questions regarding DNA, contact DNA/Breed Improvement Projects Coordinator Halla Pfeiff at halla@redangus.org or call 940-387-3502, Ext. 10. â–
Happy Thanksgiving to all from RAAA! The National Office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27 in observance of the holiday.

2015 RAAA National Convention Lone Star Tradition and Hospitality Greeted Convention Attendees by Beth Gaines, RAAA Communication Coordinator
Red Angus Association of America membership gathered in Grapevine, Texas, Sept. 9 - 11, 2015, to share in fellowship and conduct the annual business of the Association. “Lone Star Tradition” was the theme for the annual convention and was planned by the Texas Red Angus Association affiliate. The three-day event, held at the Great Wolf Lodge, was filled with the signature flair of the Lone Star State, including the opportunity to enjoy barbecue and a western swing band during the meeting. The convention attendance was 249; 145 members of which 75 were voting members. Twenty-one members attended the convention for the first time in 2015. Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium Educational opportunities set the stage for the annual convention with the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium. This free, day-long workshop was attended by 126 cattlemen. The program featured several dynamic speakers including U.S. Farm Report host Tyne Morgan, who provided the keynote address and spoke about food trends and the millennial consumer. Cowherd nutrition, marketing and financing were other topics covered during the day. While the Cattlemen’s Symposium was taking place, the ladies in attendance at convention were treated to the opportunity to express their creativity with a luncheon and painting excursion. In total, 43 ladies took advantage of the day of fun, taking home a work of art they created. Red Angus Foundation Inc. Later during convention, Kyle Gilchrist of Douds, Iowa, auctioned off the “Master of the Herd” print donated by Dr. R.L. “Bob” Hough, Jr., to benefit RAFI. Jerry Jeffries of Checotah, Oklahoma, had the final bid at $2,200. RAFI is now funding four research project and the researchers overviewed their on-going studies to convention attendees. The projects are: • Novel Methods of Genomic Predictions Using Haplocyte Information – University of Nebraska – Lincoln • Environmental Adaptability of Red Versus Black Hair Coat in the Southeast – Mississippi State University • Next Generation Red Angus Fertility Evaluation – Colorado State University • Development of Novel Hoof, Foot and Leg Structure EPD in Red Angus Cattle – Kansas State University State of the Association President Kim Ford called the convention to order on Thursday morning and provided remarks to the

A Legacy of Leadership
Sal Forbes’ leadership legacy lives on through the JRA Foundation Female. Current JRA Board member, Maddy Mushrush, said, “My family has gone to the Beckton Red Angus sale ever since I can remember and we usually had the same routine. We would get up early so we could deliver bulls to customers and still get to Sheridan, Wyoming, by suppertime. After unhooking the trailer and getting settled into our hotel room, Mom would pull out her phone and call Sal for dinner. Those dinner conversations will always hold a special place in my heart.” In one recollection of visiting Sal, Maddy’s mom, Connie Mushrush, said, “She talked about her family, the Red Angus breed and always gave credit to her success by saying, ‘I was surrounded by capable people.’”
future of Red Angus is influenced by “capable people” as the donation supports leadership and education for the next generation of Red Angus youth. Unmatched Accuracy…Superior Service…Every Time!
TLC & Technology Take Heifer Development to New Levels by Teres Lambert for American Red Angus Magazine
The owners and key employees at Hy Plains Feedyard LLC, Montezuma, Kansas, operate from the philosophy that information is power. This highly progressive feedyard management team relies on information communicated by humans who observe the cattle on a daily basis as well as information provided by the latest technology to assure that market steers and heifers achieve their most ideal harvest end point and reap the benefits on the rail.
5 Reasons Why Ranchers Use a Heifer Growing Program
1. Replacement heifers receive the TLC (tender loving care) they deserve, with the extra time and attention paying dividends beyond the first calf. 2. Valuable feed resources on the ranch are more available for the cowherd, particularly the 2- and 3-year-old cows that need them. 3. Opportunity for heifers to be bred AI to superior bulls that have strengths to offset heifer’s less-strong areas, resulting in a higher quality calf. 4. Individual heifers return to the ranch with detailed information. This information can be incorporated into ranch management decisions for continued cow success. 5. Each heifer is programmed for success: increased longevity, heavier weaning weights, fewer health challenges, etc.
Formed in 1999, Hy Plains Feedyard has grown from a one-time capacity of 20,000 to 52,000 head. The feedyard is located in what many would consider an “ideal location,” as it’s within 35 miles from two beef packing plants and 50 miles from two others. “Both the feeder and the packer understand there are benefits of minimizing the transportation time of the cattle,” stated Tom Jones, general manager. “Yield is the greatest driver when it comes to the grid – and about 60 percent of the cattle fed here sell on a grid. “Less time in transit means less tissue shrink and higher yield.” Many Red Angus cattle, straight bred and crossbred, have been fed at Hy Plains Feedyard.
At the recommendation of a friend, Seth Barr of Kremlin, Oklahoma, purchased a group of 86 commercial Red Angus heifers grown out at Hy Plains Feedyard. “I liked the fact that the heifers had been developed to reach their optimal genetic ability and that they were AI bred to a genetically superior Red Angus sire for a tight calving period,” Seth stated. “Calving went well, and the heifers are very maternal.” Seth added that steer calves weaned off at 575 to 600 pounds while heifer calves weighed 550 to 565 pounds.

TLC & Technology Take Heifer Development to New Levels “The cattle feed well,” Jones said, adding that 80 percent of cattle in the feedyard are customer owned while the other 20 percent are owned by the feedyard. Steers and heifers enter the feedyard in a variety of weights. While a majority of animals are calves in the 350- to 550pound range, the feedyard also finishes cattle that arrive at the yards as heavy as 900 pounds. “Our job is to provide a service to whatever the feeding customer needs,” said Jones. “The goal, however, is always the same: Feed the cattle to reach about 1,350 pounds – or whatever their optimal end point should be – as efficiently as possible without health and on-the-rail challenges.” Expand to Heifer Growing About 10 years ago, a customer approached Hy Plains Feedyard about growing heifers that were bound for Russia.
Feed rations, including specific ingredients, are closely monitored by (l to r) Ronnie Pruitt, Tom Jones and Dr. Travis McCarty.
Jones said he was open to the idea for four primary reasons: 1) The feedyard had experience with growing dairy heifers; 2) The feedyard had the room for the heifers; 3) The feedyard’s management and nutrition teams had the expertise to help the heifers reach their target weights and condition; and 4) The feedyard’s facilities were ideal for growing heifers so they could become healthy, highly productive cows.
“Information is power” is also the driver behind the feedyard’s heifer development program. Information gleaned from people and technology influences management decisions every step of the way.
“The heifer development service mushroomed from that one opportunity,” Jones said. In the past three to four years, Hy Plains Feedyard has helped grow close to 14,000 heifers for commercial cowmen from across the country as well as for export.
Before any heifers ever arrive at the feedyard for the development program, two-way communication between the feedyard and the customer commences. The communication is to ensure herd health, nutrition and genetic needs are met. Jones added that success of a breeding program is dependent on each one of these aspects. “Some cowmen have a health program in place while others want some advice,” said Travis McCarty, DVM, Ashland Veterinary Center Inc., and heifer development veterinarian for Hy Plains Feedyard. “We provide customers with on-farm, pre- and post-weaning health protocols if they want to know how to best manage their heifers before they arrive at the yards. “We also ensure each animal has pre-breeding vaccinations and are negative for PI-BVD before entering the breeding process.” When heifers arrive at the feedyard, they are run through the chutes, processed and sorted. The goal isn’t “put as many through the chute as you can in an hour.” Instead, the emphasis is on TLC - tender loving care.
Hy Plains Feedyard's heifer growing management team (l to r) Ronnie Pruitt, Dr. Travis McCarty and Tom Jones, are in constant communication. 44 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2015
“You have to treat each heifer with kid gloves,” Jones states. “Our cattle are worked slow and easy. After all, you’re programming that animal regarding her interactions with people and working facilities.
TLC & Technology Take Heifer Development to New Levels “Low-stress handling has numerous benefits throughout the lifetime of that animal. We benefit at the feedyard because the heifer is easier to work the next time. Our customers benefit because research shows that calmer animals perform better – and we’re talking cows and not just calves in the feedlot.” Florida research agrees with Jones. Florida researchers investigating reproductive performance in pasture-mated cows based on a combined docility score found the calmer the animal, the higher the reproductive performance. Dr. David Kirkpatrick, University of Tennessee, pointed out that research also indicates that a poor disposition can have a negative impact on several economic traits, including delay in estrus onset, decreased milk production and poorer health status. Heifers arriving at Hy Plains enter the feedyard’s state-of-theart work area that features animal-friendly alleyways and chutes where technology abounds. As a heifer enters the nextto-the-last chute, three data points are collected using Cattle Classification and Sorting System™, a science-based system that weighs the heifer and measures her hip height and distance between the hooks to the pins. Hy Plains personnel then use this quantitative information to sort the heifers into likesized groups – those with similar frame. “Today’s technological advances mean we no longer rely on a person’s observation – which is subjective,” Jones explained. “Decisions are made based on objective data.
Travis McCarty, DVM, pregnancy checks a heifer. Her days pregnant will determine what group she will be sorted into. “The technology we have in place can help predict mature cow size. It allows us to divide heifers into like groups so each group’s specific nutritional needs can be addressed.” After the heifers are sorted, they are in a gaining posture, targeting a gain of 1.5 pounds per day. The preference is for a heifer to be a body condition 4.5 or so. “Even if heifers are gaining just a pound a day, they are cycling,” Jones underscored. Approximately 45 days before the heifers are bred, a target weight is established. This target weight is determined by what the customer wants his or her mature cow size to be and the heifer’s current weight. “We want the heifer to maintain weight while receiving the necessary energy to grow and reproduce,” Jones said. “It’s a balance of optimal breeding weight and body condition – heifers cannot be given too much feed or too little feed.
With a heifer in the chute, long-term employee Scott Tucker reads information on three data points provided by the feedyard's Cattle Classification and Sorting System.™ The three data-point information – the heifer's weight, hip height and distance between the hooks to the pins – will be transferred to the heifer's computerized permanent records. 46 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2015
“When growing heifers, you can say that we are very measured and particular about our rations. Heifers are looked at daily and their rations are adjusted as needed. By breeding time, they are on our top-grower ration. During AI, the ration will include more cornstalks so expression of heat will be better. “Micro-nutrients are also an extremely important part of the ration.”
TLC & Technology Take Heifer Development to New Levels Heifers are bred at 14 to 15 months of age. Depending on what customers want, heifers might be time bred AI’ed one heat cycle or two, then a cleanup bull used; AI’ed one or two heat cycles without timed breeding, followed by a cleanup bull; or bred naturally the first time. If a customer goes the AI route, then Hy Plains Feedyard personnel offers to assist with service sire selection. The goal is to mate the heifer to a sire that excels in traits where she could use improvement. If a customer prefers natural service, the customer provides the bull or bulls. “Red Angus service sires are popular, Jones said. “We’re seeing a number of calves coming into the feedyard for feeding out or finishing that are enrolled in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program. About 70 to 75 days after being bred, heifers are pregnancy checked – using either ultrasound or rectal palpation – and sorted into calving windows of 30 days. Protein in rations is kept in check to avoid fetal losses.
Technology reigns at Hy Plains Feedyard, and that includes using a needleless vaccination tool. keeping them bred, McCarty stated. “In addition to tending to the wellbeing of the heifers, we’re programming that fetus. “We are setting both the heifer and her calf up for success. Jones added that the difference between developing a heifer to become a “super cow or your standard cow boils down to two factors: nutrition and management.
“We are focused daily on not only getting heifers bred but

TLC & Technology Take Heifer Development to New Levels Urge Use of Technology To say that Jones and McCarty are excited about technological advances made in the beef industry in the past 15 years, particularly in the area of genomics the last few years, would be an understatement. “We like technology and believe it provides a great opportunity to help cow-calf producers,” Jones stated. “We urge customers to pull hair or get blood samples and get genomic testing done so the genetic potential of each animal is identified and animals can then be managed to reach his or her genetic potential.” Jones and McCarty pointed out that genomic testing shouldn’t be limited to just determining parentage. Today genomic testing should be used to help cow-calf producers boost their bottom line via improved growth traits and carcass merit. “If you want to make a genetic change in your herd, then use genomics,” McCarty emphasized. “Genomics can help the beef industry compete with poultry and pork – and can help a commercial cowman make more money while producing a product that consumers like.”

It’s all about the Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship by John Maday, Editor, Bovine Veterinarian Previously published on www.cattlenetwork.com Upcoming changes in rules regarding the use of medicated feeds likely will cause a few headaches among producers and veterinarians, but in the long run, should promote stronger, beneficial veterinarian-client-patient relationships (VCPR). The changes relate to the FDA’s new veterinary feed directive (VFD) rule, which will require veterinarian oversight for the use of medically important antibiotics used in livestock feeds. The new rule took effect on Oct. 1, 2015, and immediately applied to those drugs which already require a VFD. It will apply to a much longer list of new VFD drugs when their new labels are phased in during December 2016. Producers accustomed to purchasing medicated feeds over the counter will need to begin working with their veterinarian to secure a VFD order that specifies how the medication will be used, on which animals, for what purpose and for how long. The rule specifies that veterinarians must write VFD orders within the context of a valid VCPR, and the veterinarian, producer and feed distributor are accountable for following label specifications for the use of medicated feeds. Extra-label use of feed-grade antibiotics is prohibited. According to Farm Foundation, which has been hosting VFD workshops around the country this summer and fall, it has become apparent that many livestock producers, especially small, independent producers, have no awareness of the changes taking place. So now is the time for veterinarians to begin reaching out to their clients and other producers in their area, building awareness of the VFD rule and to begin assessing how producers use medicated feeds and what products they use that will fall under the new rule. Carie Telgen, DVM, is a dairy veterinarian, owner of Battenkill Veterinary Bovine in Greenwich, New York, and District 1 Director for the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP). Telgen presented at one of the Farm Foundation workshops that took place in New York in September. She said feedback during the workshop mirrored what she has observed among her clients, showing the majority of producers have little or no awareness of the upcoming VFD rules. Most veterinarians, Telgen said, seem aware of the upcoming changes but at this stage are not treating the issue with a great deal of urgency.
The key for veterinarians over the next year, and in the months following enactment of the rules, will be communications with clients, nutritionists and feed distributors. Nutritionists in particular are key players in the transition, she said. Currently on many operations, the nutritionist is the person working between the client and the feed distributor in supplying medicated feeds. The veterinarian typically is aware of drug use within the herd, but leaves the details and execution up to the nutritionist and producer. That process will change with release of the new VFD drug labels in December 2016, requiring direct oversight of a veterinarian within the context of a valid VCPR. “It will change the dynamics of how we work with clients,” Telgen said, “especially smaller clients who typically do not see their veterinarian often.” Veterinarians, she added, will need to understand the VCPR requirements in the states in which they practice. The rule specifies that if a state has a veterinary practice act that defines VCPR, that state regulation will govern a veterinarian’s responsibility for VFD orders in that state. If the state does not have a VCPR law, the veterinarian needs to apply the federal definition. That, Telgen said, is the case in her home state of New York. By establishing a VCPR with more clients, Telgen believes veterinarians will have an opportunity to become more involved in their overall animal-health programs, including establishment of preventative protocols to reduce the need for medicated feeds. Clients who currently just call their veterinarians to address emergencies and use their nutritionist for obtaining and administering medicated feeds will need to bring a veterinarian into the process. She also noted that for many veterinarians, the VFD rule will force them to learn more about medicated feeds, their uses and label requirements, since they haven’t worked extensively with those products. Producers, Telgen said, will in many cases need to plan ahead more than they do currently. Many now do not contact their feed mill until the day they want the feed. The requirement for a VFD order from a veterinarian will add time to the process. She hopes electronic VFD orders accessible with mobile devices will create efficiencies, but she expects those first few months under the new rule to be hectic for all involved. For complete information on VFD producer requirements, visit http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ DevelopmentApprovalProcess/ucm455413. htm

FDA plans on-farm drug-use data collection
In addition to the upcoming VFD rules and enactment of Guidance 313, which removes performance or production claims from medically important antibiotics, FDA plans to ramp up its monitoring of antibiotic use and resistance trends. According to a recent release from FDA, gathering information on the way medically important antibiotics are used is essential to measuring the impact of the agency’s judicious use strategy. The FDA currently collects sales data on antimicrobial drugs sold for use in foodproducing animals and data on antimicrobial resistance (collected under the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS)). However, the agency recognizes that additional information is needed about on-farm use practices to adequately understand links between usage patterns and trends in resistance. The FDA, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working together to develop and implement a plan to collect additional data on antibiotic use in food-producing animals and will conduct a jointly sponsored public meeting to obtain input on approaches for collecting on-farm antimicrobial drug use and resistance data. On-farm-use data collection is consistent with objectives outlined in the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-resistant Bacteria to enhance monitoring of antimicrobial-resistance patterns, as well as antimicrobial sales, usage and management practices, at multiple points in the production chain for food-producing animals and retail meat. This data collection plan, according to FDA, is intended to provide the data needed to: · Assess the rate of adoption of changes outlined in the FDA’s Guidance #213. · Help gauge the success of stewardship efforts and guide their continued evolution and optimization. · Assess associations between antimicrobial use practices and resistance trends over time.

Deep End combines the tremendous growth and carcass merit of his popular sire with the maternal potency of his highly productive dam. Bieber Laura 158W has earned a 103.6 MPPA and a spot in the Bieber donor pen.
®
He sells November 12 in the Bieber Fever VII sale. Semen available Spring 2016.
This maternal brother to Hard Drive is an ideal “next step” sire for programs looking to add performance and end product quality without sacrificing maternal strength and phenotypic merit.
