Strategic Plan Promises Vision of Success New Year’s resolutions are either already being broken or moving toward lifechanging opportunities. No matter what your resolutions are though, to be successful they require planning, change and follow through.

For the past six months, members, staff and industry leaders have dedicated countless hours to the rewriting of a fiveyear plan for the Red Angus Association of America.

As a result, the RAAA has a vision of success for all members. It is written down, has tasks assigned, and even has dates to achieve each one. The Strategic Plan will move RAAA forward with purpose and intention.

Everything the RAAA does for the next five years will be driven by the “30,000foot view,” called the Vision Statement and Strategic Objective, supported by Strategic Goals. Not many words are used, but they are powerfully concise, clear and forward thinking.

Vision: The RAAA provides visionary leadership and innovation to enhance the beef industry’s profitability through the competitive advantages of Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle.

Strategic Objective: Increase Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle as measured by increasing the number of Red Angus bulls transferred by 8% annually for the next five years.

Guided by this vision statement, strategic objective and five strategic goals, and checked for adherence to the 10 Core Policies, the Strategic Plan will drive RAAA successfully into the future.

Rest assured as you begin to study and mark bull sale catalogs and plan for the 2016 bull-buying season, that no other breed association has a membership with RAAA’s level of dedication to the accurate, scientifically driven, pertinent data.

Of the 10 Core Policies, all but two have a reference to commercial cattlemen, sound science or objectively describing Red Angus cattle.

Beginning with the 2017 calf crop, every sire with registered progeny will have its parentage DNA profile on file. RAAA is utilizing another scientifically available tool to insure the accuracy of the Red Angus data base.

Exciting research projects are being funded by RAFI (see the December issue of ARA) and the Red Angus membership.

The results of these studies will provide additional information to further improve the ability for you to accurately select Red Angus genetics. These projects will also increase the reliability of EPDs – the only way to objectively compare cattle across contemporary groups and across herds!

In addition to all of this, we welcome Tom Brink as our CEO. He understands the importance of supporting commercial cattlemen’s success to assure the acceptance and sustainability of the Red Angus breed now and into the future. He will lead us forward guided by the Vision, Core Policies and our brand-new Strategic Plan.

The RAAA does not make New Year’s resolutions. Instead it follows a methodical plan. It is an exciting time to be part of an innovative, forward-thinking breed.

Tom Brink, Brighton, Colorado, has been named CEO of the Red Angus Association of America. President Kim Ford announced the hire of Brink in late November.

She noted the extensive selection process, the approval of the Board of Directors and is looking forward to the future of the breed and the organization.

“This is an invigorating time for the Red Angus breed. Tom not only brings incredible industry knowledge and experience to our organization, but he also possesses the skills and character – along with innovative and synergistic thinking – to propel our breed into a new era,” said Ford.

Brink brings a wealth of beef industry experience to the RAAA, previously serving several top organizations including Cattle-Fax, American Gelbvieh Association, J & F Oklahoma Holdings, Inc., (JBS Five Five Rivers Feeding LLC) and most recently as the founder and president of Top Dollar Angus.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity and the challenge to bring the Red Angus breed to the forefront of the beef industry in this country and beyond,” said Brink. “Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle have much to offer ranchers and cattle feeders in terms of profit-driven traits which result in high-quality, nutritious and wholesome beef for today’s demanding consumer.”

The Red Angus breed has the genetics to successfully contribute and excel in all segments of the beef industry, from cow-calf and stocker operations to feedlot and finishing phases of the business.

Brink holds three degrees from Kansas State University; a Bachelor’s degree in animal sciences and industry (1983) Master’s of Science degree in animal science and industries (1985), and a Master’s in agricultural economics (1987).

Simply Adding Value As fall fades away and a blustery winter and early spring begin to sneak up on us, commercial cowcalf producers know bull sale season is fast approaching. Soon it will be time to select the next sire that will make your cowherd more profitable.

As you flip through a mountain of catalogs and online advertisements remember what Red Angus has to offer.

No question, the cattle themselves sell the breed. Great maternal traits and mothering instinct pair with the legendary marbling ability and feedlot performance expected of these red cattle. But at the Red Angus Association of America, we offer much, much more beyond individual selection traits – and that value comes in the form of commercial marketing efforts.

Marketing Milestone Our FCCP “Yellow Tag” program has always been the key to market differentiation with Red Angus cattle. Most readers are familiar with the program and its outstanding success. To those who have already put their faith in “the tag,” Red Angus sincerely thanks you.

The program has experienced unprecedented growth over the past year and we just rolled over the 2 MILLION tag mark for FCCP tags sold in our program’s history! With the numbers of tagged cattle continuing to increase, it gives our marketing team more opportunities to go to work for you, the commercial producer.

More Red Angus Feeder Calf Special Sales are held at local sale barns; we have made modifications to the Choice+ grid with Tyson Fresh Meats; we have negotiated a new grid – the G.O. Red Grid with Greater Omaha; and have unveiled Superior Livestock Auction data that proves Red Angus-sired feeder cattle are simply worth more money than any other cattle, including blackhided calves. These diverse marketing opportunities are designed to add value in every phase of the beef value chain.

Perhaps most exciting is the fact that the yellow tag is set to gain even more capabilities for differentiation within the market place. Our team just completed our part of the Strategic Plan and our efforts and ideas are wholly focused on giving the tag even more capabilities, value and uniqueness within this industry.

Tag Program Coordinator With the tag program growing rapidly, we have made adjustments in the office to accommodate large volumes of orders. When you call to place your tag order, you will now be speaking with Chessie Garrett. We are extremely excited to add Chessie to the marketing team because of her continued focus on customer service and vast knowledge of the cattle industry.

Chessie’s efforts and role will be vital to the continued success of this program. Many of you may have met Chessie at the National Office in Denton, Texas, or at National Convention this past September. If you have been around her, I would bet that you quickly recognized her work ethic and selfless personality.

It is our hope that when you call to order tags for your spring calves, you have the chance to get to know Chessie as she will be key to our breed and the marketing team.

Transfer Enables Enrollment Finally, before bull sale season kicks off it is important to remember: In order to enroll in the money-making FCCP tag program, your bulls must be transferred to your name.

It is key for your bull supplier to know this and I encourage members to always remember this point. You do not want to be the shackles holding your commercial bull buyers back within the marketplace.

If members or commercial bull buyers have questions as to how to transfer bulls, do not hesitate to contact us. It is the first step to successful market differentiation.

I hope all of you have a great winter and spring, and enjoy the bull sale season. There is no better time to get out and meet new people and reflect on the past year’s ups and downs.

As you pick out your next sire battery, remember that Red Angus represents much more than just outstanding maternal traits, marbling ability and feedlot performance. Red Angus represents commercial marketing and market differentiation, simply adding value.

Garrett to Coordinate Tag Programs

A member of the marketing team, Garrett will be the primary contact for the RAAA electronic marketing programs such as Red Angus Stockyard, FeederFax and FeMail.

She will also aid multiple departments with the ability to fill in as the need arises.

Chessie Garrett has been named the tag program coordinator and member services specialist for the Red Angus Association of America.

In her role, she will aid producers in enrollment into the USDA-processverified program and provide program support in completing the required elements of ordering tags for the Feeder Calf Certification Program, Allied Access and ProCow tag programs.

Garrett is no stranger to the beef industry or the Red Angus breed.

She grew up on a commercial cowcalf operation where she was

involved in added-value marketing programs. She was an active member of the Junior Red Angus program as a youth and completed an internship with the RAAA. In the last year, she has worked part-time in the RAAA National Office as she pursued her bachelor’s degree in animal science from Tarleton State University, which she successfully

Red Angus Scholarship Deadline February 15th

Are you a high school senior and looking for money for college? Let your hard work in the Red Angus breed earn you some cash for college!

This spring the RAAA/JRA will be awarding at least $5,500 in college scholarships (a minimum of five scholarships at $1,000 and one at $500).

Scholarships to Support Agriculture’s Future from Accelerated Genetics Accelerated Genetics is helping to ensure a bright future for agriculture with the offering of various scholarships. Youth are the foundation and next generation of agriculture and Accelerated Genetics is proud to provide the following scholarships to its customers’ families!

Youth Scholarship Accelerated Genetics awards four $500 scholarships to high school seniors planning to major in agriculture at a short course, vocational technical college or a four-year university. Any high school senior who has participated in FFA, 4-H, any of the various breed organizations or any other agricultural organizations is eligible to apply. The application deadline is Feb. 15, 2016.

Collegiate Scholarship Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded to students currently enrolled in a short course, vocational technical college or a four-year university degree program. Supported by Accelerated Genetics, the collegiate program is

available to individuals who are currently in their freshman, sophomore or junior year, and are majoring in any agricultural field. This scholarship program is run by the National FFA Foundation. The application deadline is Feb. 1, 2016.

Member Data-REDS, which was the direct access to online reporting for animals in the previous database, was closed Dec. 4. This was the next step in the process of the move to REDSPro which, when complete, will allow for online, real-time data submission and retrieval.

The online Data Entry portion of REDSPro has not yet been opened due to staff efforts to resolve as many issues as possible before opening the tab to the membership.

However, members are able to enter data into an Excel template to accomplish any data reporting needs. This template is located under the Herd Management Tab with the exception of Heifer Exposure data.

Under the Herd Management Tab, there are several dropdown options. Select "download" from the pull-down tab to access a template to accomplish data reporting and transfers.

Distinguishing Between AR (Red Angus) and AN (Black Angus) within REDSPro As you may have noticed, one of the features of the REDSPro system is the ability to differentiate between AR (Red Angus) and AN (Black Angus) when calculating breed percentage. With the old Redbull system, all Angus, both Red and Black, were denoted as AR in the database. By differentiating between AR and AN we are able to more definitively describe animals registered with RAAA, and now have the ability to do so within the new robust database system.

While this advancement has an impact on breed percentages, it does not impact category for registration.

Because the multi-breed NCE handles the documentation of breed composition by determining the breed composition starting with the initial animals in the pedigree, RAAA leadership decided to leave the code in place, providing the most accurate information possible. For animals with AN in their pedigree, it will be documented and used to figure the animal’s category based on the requirements of each category for registration.

While the AR/AN breed percentage is being correctly calculated on the vast majority of animals, we have discovered errors in the calculation of some animals AR/AN breed percentage. For example, an animal that should be 13% AN 87% AR may incorrectly display as 100% AN. This error will be addressed in the near future; after which all incorrectly displayed animals will be corrected.

Total Herd Reporting

With a new year comes a new set of goals for your operation. One of our goals at the Association is to continuously accumulate as much data as possible on every animal that is being reported, plus to increase the amount of animals to report data on. The most influential way to help achieve this goal was implemented over 20 years ago.

Total Herd Reporting (THR) has allowed for the foundation of the Red Angus data reporting process and the fee structure that corresponds with this process. To help understand the THR process I have broken it down into segments; the objective and purpose, assessments, what to report and its benefits.

Objective and Purpose The objective of THR is to collect reproductive and performance data on all animals within the herd without controlling which animals should be reported. The purpose is to report either a calving record or a reason code as to why the female did not produce a calf for each year the registered female is listed as active.

Member Services Update Why would we require every animal be reported and not just a select few? Requiring every animal allows for the elimination of bias towards elite animals, which in return is in favor for the elite animals to express the superiority of the individual. This also allows for a closer evaluation of those that are expressed as being inferior.

The annual assessment includes the reporting of each calf, whether registered or not. This fee also includes the printing of a registration paper and transfer if received within 60 days of sale date for the life of the animal. Be aware, time periods are allotted to do so, otherwise non-compliance will be subject to additional fees.

The information from Total Herd Reporting is used to monitor overall breed reproductive performance, and identify genetic, environmental and management efforts.

This in return allows for improvement efforts to assist in selection and culling decisions, and generate data for producing genetic predictions for reproductive traits.

All herds are designated as spring- or fall-calving herds.

This determines when each set of data and assessments are due to the National Office. Spring-calving season is Jan. 1 to June 30, and fall-calving season is July 1 to Dec. 31. The herd inventory should include all females the breeder will be collecting production data on for the next 12 months.

The assessment of THR may be paid in full at the time of billing or completed in five monthly installments or less to help the stakeholder manage cash flow of their operation.

Assessments The assessments associated with THR are on a per-cow basis versus per-calf basis. This is designated as the “active female.”

What is an active female?

An active female is any animal that has reported a calf every year or is expected to calve, therefore hasn’t been inactivated for a lack there of or has been given a disposal code for a reason of culling her out of the herd.

Our Program

Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.

Our Ranches

The Elite Nucleus herd runs on our "home" ranch located 10 miles south of Lewistown, Montana in the Snowy Mountains.

We also have an advanced genetics center located in Iowa where our parents began farming over 50 years ago. In addition to these ranches we have established regional ranch centers in Mandan, North Dakota and Raton, New Mexico.

Our Genetics

We have established a breeding philosophy that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. Our herd sires Expectation and Packer are perfect examples that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes. Our next generation of herd sires such as Takeover, Nextpectation, Night Calver and Saga continue this tradition and headline the bulls that we will be selling in this event.

Our Bull and Heifer Development

We develop our bulls and females at the Weschenfelder Development Center just outside of Shepherd, MT. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 lb ADG with 0.2 of an inch back fat. The replacement females are fed a carrying ration and we have maintained over an 80% first service AI conception rate on our females. The cattle are developed for large rugged environments.

Our Team

The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.

Our Key Members:

• Ryan Ludvigson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the cowherd and development operations in Montana.

• Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist, managing our embryo collection and transfer program as well as our embryo export program.

• Rodger Reitman – Our main reproductive specialist and development manager – numerous years experience with seed stock and commercial herds.

• Kraig Sweeney - Our ranch manager that oversees the Elite Nucleus Herd in Lewistown. Well qualified with years of experience in seedstock and commercial cow calf production.

• Weschenfelder Family – operate the Weschenfelder Development Facility and are responsible for the development of our bulls and replacement females.

• Cooperators – Well known and historic cooperating families (Raisland, Tilleman, Bootjack and Knaub)

Benefits The requirement of THR has made for increasing confidence of the breed’s Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). All EPDs benefit from collective data being reported, for example, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability. These two EPDs, along with the HerdBuilder Index, make Red Angus exceptional in completely describing the essential cowherd traits.

The Gridmaster Index allows for focus on carcass traits, but has a component that includes maternal EPDs, thus, the continued importance of THR. Placing selection pressure on these traits will have direct impact on your marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings and carcasses sold) and can certainly increase your revenue on a per-calf basis. However, in

order to achieve the higher goal of increased revenue percow-exposed, selection pressure must be placed on cowherdbuilding traits – Calving Ease, Heifer Pregnancy, Maintenance Energy, and Stayability.

With a fluctuating industry, EPDs are what make new marketing ideas possible, such as Genomic Merit DNA tests. It is also important to report as much data as possible. This includes calving ease, udder scores, body condition scores, cow weights, ultrasound and carcass data.

As producers in a growing world, we are continuously asking more of our cattle. The best way to improve our production is to measure further and evaluate closer. Therefore, THR gives Red Angus stakeholders the opportunity to exceed above the rest.

A new year is a great time to review the Total Herd Reporting Annual Schedule. To help our members accomplish each requirement, each member should have received a THR calendar from the National Office in the mail. It can also be found on the web site at http://redangus.org/registration.

To meet Step 1 of THR after January 1, it will be time to update your spring-herd inventory for 2016. Also, report fall 2015 calving data through weaning. ■

While many commercial cattlemen take the crossbreeding route, Pete Lassotovitch of Reedley, California, prefers straightbreds or “darn close” to straightbreds. His breed of choice – Red Angus.

“The family’s original herd back in the 1930s was Shorthorns and Herefords,” said Lassotovitch. “Then, in the ’60s, they crossbred, and I kinda liked the resulting black baldy cows.

“After that, Brangus cows were introduced to the ranch, then Red Angus bulls. I not only liked – but really liked – the Red Angus calves and replacement heifers. Through the years, a herd strong with Red Angus influence came to be.”

California Cows Four years ago, Lassotovitch made a key decision. He eliminated all old cows, keeping the younger red cows – the Red Angus.

Today, almost every cow is at least two-thirds or more Red Angus, and every calf born is sired by a Red Angus bull.

“We are all red and staying there,” said Lassotovitch. “Our herd is pretty darn uniform now.”

He added that, thanks to the Red Angus influence, overall temperament of the herd has calmed down as well.

Before the current drought started four years ago, Lassotovitch Ranch ran about 400 cows. Year by year, the herd dwindled and now stands at 275 cows.

In addition to lessening herd numbers, Lassotovitch has focused the breeding program on downsizing mature cow size.

“The goal is to run more cows on less pasture,” Lassotovitch said. “Plus, when your cow numbers are up, it doesn’t hurt near as much financially when you lose a calf.

“We would be doing this whether we are in a drought or not. It just makes sense. Smaller cows mean you can run more cows and have more offspring.”

The California drought has taken its toll on forage, water and trees, but Red Angus cows continue to raise calves that meet Lassotovitch’s goals.

To reach its goal of no cow on the ranch weighing more than 1,200 to 1,300 pounds, Lassotovitch Ranch keeps only the moderate-sized females of each year’s heifer crop.

As he handpicks potential replacements from the heifer crop, Lassotovitch puts the moderate to smaller framed, more feminine heifers in the “keeper” pen. Other heifers, as well as those acting a bit “waspy,” go into the market heifer group.

Bull Selection Reducing cow size is also top of mind for Lassotovitch when it comes to bull selection.

He has seven key criteria when selecting bulls – “big butted, big barreled, broad backed, meat on the bones, gentle temperament and not large framed.” He zeroes in on bulls that stand square, are range ready and have the feet and legs it will take to cover the territory and get cows bred. The California cowman adds that a conditioned bull can easily lose 50 to 75 pounds when turned out with the cows on the range as he has a lot of ground to travel.

Lassotovitch also watches birthweight on bulls targeted to service heifers, adding that he prefers a 65-pound birthweight to a calf that weighs 45 pounds at birth.

“We don’t want to be producing jackrabbits,” he stated. “We want our calves to have some size but not be so big that our heifers have trouble delivering them.”The goal is a calf that comes easy and quickly gets up to nurse.

Lassotovitch selects bulls that stand square, are range ready and have the feet and legs it will take to cover the territory and get cows bred.

Unlike some breeders who prefer yearling bulls, Lassotovitch Ranch wants older bulls that can hold their own among the bull battery and that travel the miles needed to get females

covered. Lassotovitch said he’s found that yearling bulls just “don’t work as well under our conditions.”

The EPDs and performance data that get his highest attention are birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and maternal strength. He also pays attention to the GridMaster index. “It’s very important to us that all bulls are registered purebred Red Angus,� he said.

“Being able to sell our calves as certified Red Angus through the Feeder Calf Certification Program increases their marketability. Buyers know the calves wearing the yellow FCCP tags are Red Angus genetics and know their origins and that they have records.�

Fall Calving Calves are born Sept. 1 through the end of November. Lassotovitch, not satisfied with this 90-day calving window, is working to tighten the calving season to 60 days.

Fall calving fits in with Lassotovitch Ranch’s California environment. Typically, fall is when rain arrives. A green winter means cows and fall-born calves have better grazing.

For the past four years, however, the rains haven’t arrived and green winter grasses have been minimal. “The drought years have been tough,� he said matter-of-fact without a hint of complaint.

Lassotovitch appreciates stayability and long-term production traits.

To get cows through calving season and to prepare both cows and bulls for breeding season, Lassotovitch has increased their nutrition by feeding oat hay and alfalfa three days a week in the fall.

Red Angus Genetics Stand-Up to California Challenges Six weeks before the bulls are turn out, they are also given alfalfa and protein supplements.

The calves are branded and marked – ear notched – in January, and in March Lassotovitch will take the cow-calf pairs to the foothills to graze on either Bureau of Land Management or Forest Service land. While the animals graze this land, the pastures at the ranch rest before the cattle return to the ranch the first of June.

California Challenges Lassotovitch pointed out that, when his grandfather entered the cattle business, California’s dry season started the first of May. Today, California has 60 to 80 more days of summer, with the dry season commencing the first of March.

“This is hurting grass production and the trees,” said Lassotovitch, adding that the area, under normal conditions, requires 15 to 20 acres to a cow.

Lassotovitch weans his calves the middle of June.

“My goal is to produce blocky calves that have some butt on them,” he said. “I want calves that have some barrel – deep bodies – and stand there quietly and eat instead of being nervous.

“I want calves that look the same – are cookie cutters – and have the ability to forage.”

Weaned, the 625- to 650-pounds calves will go on pasture until they reach approximately 1,000 pounds at about 18 months of age. Lassotovitch then sells the calves by the truckload via a video auction. Leftover calves not making a truckload will be sold at a local livestock market.

He pointed to the hills adjacent to his cattle pastures, noting that 100-year-old trees are drying or are already dead from the longer dry season coupled with the drought. An area that once was a large pond and served the entire cow herd now has little water.

The saving grace of Lassotovitch Ranch during the current drought, Lassotovitch said, is a three-year, federal government cost-sharing project – a solar system that helps bring water to the cattle. The system includes six big tanks – each holding a day’s worth of water – and pipelines going a mile each way that deliver water to a “bunch of” water troughs scattered throughout his pastures.

Red Angus Genetics Stand-Up to California Challenges “Thanks to solar, we have live water throughout our pastures and this project helps protect the environment,� he said. “Rather than 275 to 400 cows sharing one water hole, they stay scattered during the day and smaller groups of animals go to each water trough. “The end result, and the reason for the federal government cost-sharing, is that we are cutting down on erosion and dust.�

Another California challenge is wild pigs. Lassotovitch says it’s not unusual for more than 100 wild hogs to be killed in a year. One year the tally hit 140 with Lassotovitch putting an end to 31 wild pigs in just eight days.

A three-year, federal government cost-sharing project helped Lassotovitch install a solar system that ensures his cattle have water.

“While we hear coyotes at night, it’s the wild pigs that cause problems here,� he stated. “Wild pigs can really tear up a field. After they have been in a field, it will look like a drunk with a rototiller went through it.�

Although bears have not been a problem in the past, they just might be an upcoming issue.

The wild hogs also wreak havoc with Lassotovitch Ranch’s oat haystacks. They not only eat the bottom bales, but this tactic causes additional disruption when the stack tips over.

Once, a vehicle took the brunt of this upheaval.

“I’ve noticed evidence of three different bears on the ranch,�

Lassotovitch said, “and I’ve heard that one guy saw seven bears along a two-mile stretch. They are being driven to the area due to the fires around the state.

the cow can become infected by another tick and have another abortion.

Top-of-mind diseases for this California rancher are trichomoniasis, anaplasmosis and foothill abortion, a tickborne disease. Lassotovitch explained that once a cow has suffered a foothill abortion, she will build immunity to the tick. However, that immunity can wear off, and

Trich and anaplasmosis also keep Lassotovitch on his toes when it comes to his bull battery. Before turning bulls out, he tests each bull for trichomoniasis and semen quality. Lassotovitch said that while he purchases only bulls that have been vaccinated for permanent protection against anaplasmosis, he can’t take chances on a bull being sterile and not getting cows bred.

Lassotovitch pointed to a cow with newborn calf at side. “See that pair,� he said. “She’s a nine-year-old. We like females like her that stay in the herd. We’re just hoping we can keep holding on to our genetics and the drought doesn’t force us to sell any more females.� n

Under normal conditions, this California ranch requires 15 to 20 acres to a cow, but is feeling the strain from the drought as even 100-year-old trees are dying out.

Resolve to Collect Better Data at Calving

As we flip the calendar to January, many producers have made various New Year’s resolutions that have the potential to positively impact their personal life – becoming physically fit, spending more time with family, etc. What about resolutions that you can implement on your operation that can have a positive impact on your seedstock business, as well as your commercial customers’ operations? The resolution that comes to mind: Collect and submit accurate data on your herd. I’m certainly not implying that RAAA members have intentionally submitted inaccurate data in the past, but as with all data collection, there’s always room for improvement.

If this preparatory step consists of cleaning off your hoof tape so you can accurately read the numbers, do yourself a favor and throw every hoof tape that you own in the trash. For those readers that thankfully don’t know what a hoof tape is, it is similar in appearance to a seamstresses’ tape that is placed around a newborn calf’s hoof and the diameter of the hoof is used to estimate the weight of the calf.

Birth Data With the spring 2016 calving season quickly approaching, most producers are preparing for this exciting time by making new calf tags, checking that the tattoo equipment is ready, etc. But what about getting your equipment ready to collect accurate birth weights?

Utilizing a hoof tape for birth weight collection is NOT an accepted method for collecting birth weights to be submitted to RAAA. This is due to the fact that research has proven that hoof tapes are not accurate in measuring birth weight.

Specifically, research performed at Mississippi State University

(http://pas.fass.org/content/25/6/716.f ull.pdf ) evaluated the differences in birth weight measured with digital-platform scales, spring-hanging scales, hoof tape and visual estimation. Their research showed that hoof tapes and visual estimation underestimated high birth weights, and hoof tapes overestimated low birth weights.

Further, using digital-platform scale data as the standard, visual estimation proved to be more accurate in measuring birth weight as compared to the hoof tape. As expected, the results of the research showed that digital-platform scales and spring-hanging scales resulted in more accurate measurements of birth weight as compared to visual or hoof tape estimations.

Resolve to Collect Better Data at Calving Recognizing the physical demands required to take birth weights using a spring-hanging scale, several alternatives have been developed and offered in the marketplace. Manufacturers have developed devices that can be attached to the rack of a four-wheeler or receiver hitch of a pickup or ATV that allows the producer to set the newborn calf in a cradle. An additional benefit of these cradle devices is it positions and holds the calf ideally for tattooing, ear tagging or vaccination processing.

Preferably, producers would only use one set of scales through the calving season. However, if your situation demands two sets of scales, make sure you calibrate the scales at least once a day. Before calving season starts, identify an object that weighs the same as your average birth weight, and use that same object throughout the calving season to make sure your scales are reading correctly.

Minor Difficulty and Major Difficulty, let the calf pullers decide that. If only chains and handles are required, use Minor Difficulty, but if you have to use the calf puller then denote the calving as Major Difficulty.

One common calving-ease score question: What should I submit on the heifer that I hastily assisted because I didn’t want to be late for my date? First, I’d recommend ordering a pizza and moving your date to the calving pasture so you can show off your sensitive and caring side.

Seriously, if you assist a heifer or a cow, do not submit a calving-ease score of 1, regardless of the situation. If your date adamantly resists the calving-pasture idea, and you hastily assist the heifer before she has the chance to do the job herself, your only decision is: Do I record a calving-ease score of 2, or do I not record a score?

Udder Score The latest data point added to the calving and birth observation is the Udder

Calving-Ease Scores One of the simplest measurements taken on an animal in its lifetime is its calvingease score. Ranging from 1 to 5, calvingease scores document unassisted and assisted calving observations. The range of calving ease scores are: 1 – No Difficulty 2 – Minor Difficulty 3 – Major Difficulty 4 – Cesarean 5 – Abnormal Presentation (Note: Calving-Ease Scores of 5 are not used in CED or CEM EPD calculations).

Obviously, you don’t have to watch a cow calve to know she calved unassisted, further the Cesarean and Abnormal Presentation are extremely straightforward. In deciding between

Score of the dam. Udder Score information is broken down into udder suspension and teat size, with both ranging from 1 to 9. Reference the Udder Score chart as a guide for assigning scores.

Identical to scoring body condition at weaning, udder scores within a contemporary group should be collected by the same person.

As discussed in a previous issue of the ARA, research is currently being performed on RAAA’s database of udderscore data. The initial step, which is nearing completion, is calculating the heritability and genetic correlation of udder suspension and teat size. This work will lay the foundation to allow RAAA to include the udder score data in it’s genetic evaluation.

As you prepare for calving season, ensure that you are equipped to collect accurate birth weights, calving-ease scores and udder-score data. This critical step will lay the foundation for an accurate genetic description which will equally benefit your seedstock operation and your customers’ commercial operations. ■

UNL Researches Haplotype Inclusion for Robust Genetic Predictions

Although genomic-enabled EPDs have been around for a few years, a new method of utilizing genomic information is being researched at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL).

Beef Genetics Specialist at UNL, Dr. Matt Spangler, shared four hypothesized benefits of the research project: 1. To reduce the complexity of developing genomic predictions, particularly in light of the fact that the number of genetic markers (SNPs) greatly outnumber the animals that are genotyped.

2. The use of haplotype information can identify particular regions of the genome that are responsible for genetic differences between animals, making genomic predictions more robust over generations.

3. The ability to use all genomic information rather than discarding some and imputing to a common SNP density.

4. More robust predictions in a multiple breed context.

In laymen’s terms, “The research that we are doing is looking at alternative methods of including genomic information into EPDs,” explained Spangler.

“Using haplotypes reduces the number of things we have to estimate. Instead of estimating individual markers we are investigating sets of markers that are inherited together as blocks called haplotypes. In addition, we are expanding this new approach to include multiple traits and multiple breeds.”

Spangler used the example of researching feed intake in cattle. “The problem is we have very few cattle who have feed-intake records but we have multiple cattle who have post-weaning-gain records. We know that post-weaninggain and feed intake are correlated.

Currently, only the Red Angus breed is being utilized for the current research project but Spangler hopes that the benefits trickle into other breeds and influence genetic predictions across breeds as well.

So in our proposed method, to learn more about feed intake, we borrow information from post-weaning gain where we have a lot of animals recorded.”

Historically, genomic predictions have been based on a common number of SNP (e.g. 50,000). So if a producer genotyped an animal with 150,000 markers, the number used to estimate Molecular Breeding Values (MBV) was the common base of 50,000 markers. To do this the animal with 150,000 markers was “imputed” to the common set of 50,000 markers.

Similarly, if an animal only had 30,000 markers genotyped, the animal was “imputed” to 50,000.

The method proposed by Spangler and colleague Dr. Kachman at UNL would accommodate animals with missing genotypes. “We take whatever genotypes the animal has and use them,” Spangler explained. “We don’t need to fill in missing genotypes, we just leave them missing.

When an animal has extra markers, we use that information, too, so that we aren’t throwing away any information. There is no need to perform imputation using our proposed method.”

UNL has benefited from a strong working relationship with the RAAA having had access to Red Angus data to perform independent evaluation of genomic predictions used by the

RAAA. They are developing methodology to incorporate genomics into the National Cattle Evaluation, including novel methods to do this for threshold traits such as calving ease and heifer pregnancy.

In order to conduct research, the UNL team utilizes all of the performance, pedigree and genotype information from the RAAA database. “We run traditional methods parallel to our proposed method and ask ‘is what we are doing better?’”

Currently, only the Red Angus breed is being utilized for the current research project but Spangler hopes that the benefits trickle into other breeds and influence genetic predictions across breeds as well. “We think we can make use of data from other breeds asking the questions ‘Will that help us better predict the genetic merit of Red Angus cattle? Can we

One of the benefits of the proposed method would be the ability to conduct a genome-wide association study where conglomerate traits are researched in unison. “When we try to develop EPDs for yearling weight we do so in a model that includes weaning weight and yearling weight.

Now we can use the same kind of procedures for genomic studies analyzing multiple traits at one time,” said Spangler.

He closed by stating that this kind of research project is only possible with the financial support of the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. and, equally important, the access to data resources provided by the RAAA. He concluded, “We are asking the question, ‘Can we make better use of all of the genomic data that Red Angus producers are collecting so that we can do a better job of predicting the genetic merit of their animals.’ We include genomics into our EPDs now but can we do it better to squeeze more info out of all the data collected.

The possibility of extending this to multi-breed approaches whereby we can actually inform genomic predictions for one breed based on genomic information from another breed is extremely exciting.” ■

New Livestock Rules Attempt to Curb Antibiotic and Antimicrobial Resistance Researchers warned of potential problems in 1945

When he woke up just after dawn on Sept. 28, 1928, Dr. Alexander Fleming of London hadn’t planned on revolutionizing all of medicine. But that is precisely what happened as he walked into his laboratory at St. Mary’s hospital and discovered how a particular mold, penicillin, stopped normal growth of the bacteria, staphylococci.

Work began on isolating the active ingredient of penicillin and, 14 years later in the summer of 1941, Dr. Howard Florey, a professor of pathology at Oxford University and biochemists Dr. Ernst Chain and Dr. Norman Heatley, developed a method for mass producing penicillin.

During World War II, the drug reduced deaths caused by bacterial pneumonia to less than 1 percent. (Bacterial pneumonia deaths had reached as high as 18 percent in World War I and prior to that, soldiers were more likely to die from infections than from battle wounds.)

The truth is that antibiotic/ antimicrobial resistance is real and while the Center for Disease Control points to human medicine as the primary contributor to resistance, it is important for the livestock sector to understand that we have a small piece of it too, and that we must be transparent – and judicious – about the ways in which we use these valuable resources, Apley added.

Fleming, Florey and Chain (but not Heatley) were awarded a Nobel Prize for their work on penicillin in 1945. Interestingly – almost ominously – in his acceptance speech, Fleming warned that the overuse of penicillin might lead to bacterial resistance …

some bacteria developing resistance to them in both human and animal populations,” explained Michael D. Apley, D.V.M., Ph.D., D.A.C.V.C.P. and Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Manhattan, Kansas. Just as concerning, to date, medicine has limited resources to combat the newer, more resistant strains of microbes and bacteria.

Apley, who has 30 years of experience in food animal agriculture as a general practitioner, a specialized production medicine practitioner and researcher, currently focuses on the use of drugs in food animals. He is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology and has an extensive background in the use of antimicrobials in food animals.

Fast-forward nearly 75 years. Antibiotics have become important tools used to treat, control and prevent illness in both humans and animals. But as Fleming prophesized decades before, some troubling trends have appeared.

“We have only been using antibiotics since the mid 1940s, and we already see

New Livestock Rules Attempt to Curb Antibiotic and Antimicrobial Resistance Several professional organizations, like the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, the National Pork Board, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and the Academy of Veterinary Consultants have sought his expertise on antimicrobial task force committees.

Apley is one of 30 individuals who serves on the Presidential Advisory Council for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria. The group, comprised of specialists in both human and animal health, is working aggressively to quantify what is going on right now in either sector and identify what challenges may lay ahead.

“In the whole scope of history, 75 years is an extremely short period of time. In the mid 1980s, we declared that the war on infectious diseases was won. Thirty short years later, it appears we have a lot more work to do,” said Apley.

The truth is that antibiotic/antimicrobial resistance is real and while the Center for Disease Control points to human medicine as the primary contributor to resistance, it is important for the livestock sector to understand that we have a small piece of it too, and that we must be transparent – and judicious – about the ways in which we use these valuable resources, Apley added.

Steps like the new Veterinary Feed Directive, which went into effect Oct. 1, 2015, and the impending change of medically important feed additive an-

tibiotics requiring a veterinary feed directive, which will go into effect as of January 2017, are measures that may help preserve antibiotic effectiveness for as long as possible.

“The last time a new antibiotic group was released – and for which we use a member of that group in food-animal production – was 1978,” Apley said.

“While alterations to existing antimicrobials may be approved, it is highly unlikely that we will get another class approved for use in livestock anytime soon.” Therefore, it becomes critical for farmers and ranchers to be responsible stewards of the antibiotic and antimicrobial tools we have today to not only preserve their efficacy but to maintain or enhance consumer understanding and acceptance of their use in livestock.

Understanding the New Rules The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first requested that animal drug sponsors voluntarily revise the approved-use conditions for their medically important antimicrobial drug products by removing production uses like growth enhancement or feed efficiency, and bringing the remaining therapeutic uses under a veterinarian’s oversight.

The Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) rule, which went into effect in October 2015, describes the details of how veterinary authorization of medically important antibiotics for use in the feed of food animals will work. As new labels for these drugs are phased in during

late 2016, a producer will need to have a VFD – a permission slip of sorts – from a veterinarian before using medically important antibiotics in livestock feed for the purposes of treating, controlling or preventing disease.

The FDA uses the following scenario to explain its definition of a ‘judicious use:’ “For example, a veterinarian may determine, based on the client’s production practices and history, that weaned beef calves arriving at a feedlot in bad weather after a lengthy transport are at risk to develop bacterial respiratory infection. In this case, the veterinarian might choose to preventively treat these calves with an antimicrobial approved for prevention of that bacterial infection. On the other hand, FDA would not consider a judicious use for prevention to be the administration of a drug to apparently healthy animals in the absence of any information that such animals were at risk of a specific disease.”

New Livestock Rules Attempt to Curb Antibiotic and Antimicrobial Resistance Central to the VFD rule is a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship.

“Essentially, if you want to use certain antimicrobials and antibiotics in feed to prevent, control or treat illness, you will need to have written approval from a veterinarian with whom you have a professional relationship,” explained Dr. Gerald Stokka, DVM, MS and Livestock Stewardship Specialist at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota.

“This is a veterinarian who knows you, your livestock and has a working knowledge of your management practices,” he explained.

Stokka, who spent over 30 years in private practice, academia and industry, is recognized for his multifaceted expertise in beef cattle production medicine. He has worked with feedlots, stocker and cow-calf operations throughout the Great Plains and has been sought out by numerous agricultural projects abroad for his expertise, including in Ukraine, Brazil, South Africa and Costa Rica.

According to Stokka, the VFD places the responsibility of a “judicious use” of a medication on the veterinarian. A VFD will identify the antimicrobial to be used, the indication for its use, as well as the dosage, time-frame, specific livestock (numbers and their location) to receive the medicine, as well as withdrawal periods, refills or reorders, and/or other special instructions.

For example, a feedlot will now need a

veterinarian to authorize the use of a oxytracycline per label instructions. The VFD could be in effect for up to six months maximum or as indicated on the label.

A VFD will also be required when two antimicrobials are fed concurrently, even if one of the antimicrobials is not considered a VFD drug. Take, for instance the inophone anitmicrobial Rumensin® (monensin) – which isn’t on the VFD list – and Tylan® (tylosin) – which is on the list. A feedlot could use Rumensin® according to the label in its feed to enhance feed efficiency without a specific VFD. However, if the feedlot feeds Rumensin® along with Tylan®, it would need a VFD that specifically states the two could be fed together.

The VFD rule, which will take effect in January 2017, phases in veterinary oversight for those feed additive drugs that will move from an over-the-counter to VFD status.

“Having a good vet-client-patient relationship will be critical for producers to understand how this all fits together,” Stokka said.

Apley agreed. “Veterinarians across the nation are ramping up to be better schooled on these feed products and the role they will play going forward. Farmers, ranchers and veterinarians – like our colleagues in human medicine – are being asked to be more transparent about our uses of antibiotics. ■

Combating the myths: Antibiotics Used in Humans and Animals Claim: “Eighty percent of the antibiotics produced (by volume) are used in livestock production.”

The American Meat Institute provides important context to that claim. It estimates that the combined weight of livestock and poultry in the U.S. is more than triple the combined weight of American men and women. For example, a 1,200-pound steer is equal to about six men. If a steer needs treatment for pneumonia, it logically would need a larger dose than one adult man.

While it is true that the same classes of antibiotics and antimicrobials may be used in both human and animal medicine, antibiotics more commonly used in human medicine are less commonly used in animals and viceversa.

And some antibiotics, like ionophores which work with bacteria in the rumen to improve feed efficiency, are never used in human medicine and should really be removed from the calculations.

Now that the New Year is upon us, it’s time to resolve to shed those few extra pounds we’ve continuously committed to for the past 10 years. Okay, so maybe this year won’t be any more successful than it has been in the past. However, it is a good time to resolve to make sure your family ranching operation is in tip-top shape. With this in mind, let’s discuss four items that should be part of your resolutions for the New Year!

1. Operational Budget Hopefully, this is already being done without a resolution as it’s difficult to measure the health of your business without a budget. As the year progresses, use your budget to compare budget to actual and identify differences. By doing this, you can better identify where you have operational successes and failures. Based on your findings, you can make adjustments

to ensure your financial goals for the year are met. After a period of time of budgeting, you will be able to better depend on prior years’ information for forecasting and can then factor in conditions such as markets, weather, input costs, and so on.

2. Estate Planning If you haven’t already done so, start on your estate plan. Depending on

your age, this may or may not be complicated. For the young operator this may be something as simple as a Living Will. However, if you’re older with multiple generations or family members to consider you may have a more involved plan. Regardless of where you are in the life spectrum, the idea is to get started now because the end can come at any unknown point.

Forgotten Resolutions... No Longer Having a good plan and being prepared will help ensure your goals will be met.

3. Pay Down Debt Strong cattle prices over the past few years have allowed quite a bit of flexibility for ranchers. This may include upgrading equipment, expanding herd sizes, and purchasing more farm and pasture ground. However, this flexibility has also allowed operations to expand and take on more debt load. Debt can be toxic when a market sours. A good cash flow plan will help to pay down debt and build a reserve for when prices are not as strong.

4. Document the History of Your Ranch You may be asking yourself, “What does documenting the history of our ranch do to help it grow, operate bet-

ter, or do anything to make us more profitable?” While this may not directly contribute to the bottom line, it does provide value to the operation.

You would be amazed by how much current operations are affected by how earlier generations ran the ranch.

While technologies have changed, the work ethic that has been instilled into the generations likely has not. This affects your core values, which in turn dictates how you operate, thereby affecting profitability. Regardless of where your operation is in its lifecycle, this is important to do. If you’re multiple generations into the life cycle, it makes it that much more difficult to gather the ranch’s history if you delay.

Starting now is crucial. Likewise, if you’re early on in the life cycle it makes it that much easier to start now.

This is an ongoing process, but it’s amazing how interesting compiling and reading this information can be.

There are many more resolutions you could adopt in your personal and business life. These are just some of the actions to start on now that will prove to be valuable now and into the future. Unlike that resolution to lose 10 pounds, these will be easier to stick to because they can be done as a family with the entire group giving input and helping everyone stay accountable towards a common goal (as with most things on a family ranch).

Glascock Honored as American Star Farmer Finalist

Ever since he was a little boy, Thomas Glascock of Pilot Point, Texas, knew he wanted his own herd of cattle. Today, not only does the 21-year-old have his own cowherd, he was named a 2015 finalist for the American Star Farmer award, one of the most prestigious honors awarded to a student by the National FFA Organization.

For as long as he can remember, Glascock's life revolved around livestock and agriculture. In 2000, he received his first Red Angus heifer and she became the foundation of his herd. Today, along with his herd of 90-plus cows, he boasts 310 acres of coastal and native grasses to produce the forage needed to satisfy the nutritional demands of his cattle.

Throughout high school, he spent hours feeding, inspecting, managing show cattle, hauling hay and processing cattle.

He has participated in a variety of FFA activities at both the local, district, area, state and national levels. In addition to his FFA activities and his Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE), Glascock is a past National Junior Red Angus director and holds responsibilities within the Texas Junior Red Angus Association. As he studies production animal science at Tarleton State University, Glascock says that he feels like he is now turning his dream into a reality, one management decision at a time.

Glascock is the son of Randy and Thomas Glascock. He is a member of the Pilot Point FFA Chapter, led by advisors Tammy and Randy Glascock and Casey Brinlee.

Glascock was honored as one of four American Star Farmer finalists during the 88th National FFA Convention & Expo, in Louisville, Kentucky, this past October.

The American Star Awards, including the American Star Farmer, American Star in

Agribusiness, American Star in Agricultural Placement and American Star in Agriscience, are awarded to FFA members who demonstrate outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through completion of an SAE program. A required activity in FFA, an SAE allows students to learn by doing by either owning and operating an agricultural business, working or serving an internship at an agriculture-based business or conducting an agriculture-based scientific experiment and reporting results.

Other requirements to achieve the award include demonstrating top management skills; completing key agricultural education, scholastic and leadership requirements; and earning an American FFA Degree, the organization’s highest level of student accomplishment.

Sixteen American Star Award finalists from throughout the U.S. are nominated by a panel of judges to interview during the national convention and expo. Four are named winners and receive cash awards totaling $4,000. All American Star finalists receive a $2,000 cash award. The American Star Awards are sponsored by ADM Crop Risk Services, Case IH, Elanco, Farm Credit and Syngenta as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 610,240 student members who belong to one of 7,665 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Sutherlin Joins ABS Global as Sales Team Leader Lacey Sutherlin of Stevensville, Montana, has joined ABS Global as a sales team leader.

Working in western Montana, Sutherlin will be delivering the full array of ABS products and services. She will be providing turn-key breeding projects with synchronization, heat detection and a portable breeding barn, as well as provid-

ing nitrogen fill service for semen customers. Sutherlin has successfully conducted AI schools and will arrange AI training as needed throughout Montana and parts of northern Wyoming. She will be leading a team of ABS representatives and assisting them with sales and breeding services.

Her previous work at Origen has allowed her to develop many relationships within the purebred industry, both nationally and internationally. That experience has given Sutherlin key insight into the cattle industry for emerging trends, needs, concerns and future direction.

Involved with numerous ag industry groups, she is a true advocate for agriculture. She is currently the chair for Montana’s Young Stockgrowers, secretary for the Western Montana Angus Association, director with the Montana Angus Auxiliary, and a member of the Montana Angus and Red Angus Associations.

Sutherlin and her husband Chad own 3C Cattle where they raise Angus and Red Angus cattle and are an offshoot of Chad’s family operation, Sutherlin Farms Red Angus.
