Red Angus Marks Successful Convention in Oklahoma City With more than 350 total attendees and a palpable atmosphere of enthusiasm, the Red Angus Association of America’s 63rd Annual National Convention was a tremendous success. Seedstock breeders and commercial cattle producers alike recognize that Red Angus is the right breed for the modern beef business. This breed excels from ranch to consumer, and the rest of the industry is catching on to that fact. Red is no longer a second-class color. And Red Angus is no longer a small breed in the shadows. Registrations and active cow inventories are growing, our FCCP tag program keeps setting new records, and we have hard data supporting the fact that Red Angus is the MOST- FAVORED FEMALE in the industry. Downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was an enjoyable location for this year’s convention. Accommodations at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center were first rate. If you were unable to attend the Convention, below are a few highlights. Commercial Producer Symposium and Keynote Address More than 200 commercial cattlemen listened to informative presentations covering topics ranging from cattle market trends, factors that affect retained owner-

ship success, and using DNA in replacement heifer selection to mineral program considerations for pasture cattle. There were many questions from the audience throughout the session. Then on the following day at the membership meeting, Dr. Tom Field, Director of the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, challenged the group to remember that there are ALWAYS opportunities for innovation and greater business success that surround us. He also emphasized that pursuing those opportunities ALWAYS involves hardship and hard work. RAFI Benefit Auction It was great to see the Bieber Red Angus Ranch bred heifer package bring $43,000 going to a long-time commercial Red Angus producer and enthusiast from Nebraska. Combined with other auctioned items, nearly $50,000 was raised to support the Red Angus Foundation’s efforts in scientific research to help to advance the Red Angus breed. Committee Presentations and Board of Director Elections As part of the two-day RAAA membership meeting, attendees learned about the work of various committees during the past year.

Convention Builds Relationships As I sit down to write this column, the idea of actually finding a fresh topic to put before you, seems impossible. Luckily, it’s time for the annual convention. I think we can all agree that talking about this great breed that we all love, and the fine folks we get to do business with, is an easy subject.

that you may only see once a year. Each year also builds new relationships, as we sit and have meals with folks we may have only spoken with on the phone or even some we have never met before. We are able to connect and get to really know fellow breeders by actually spending time with one another.

First of all, I’d like to congratulate the Oklahoma Red Angus Association for putting on a wonderful convention in Oklahoma City. And any of you who have helped put one on, know just how much work it is, so hats off to all those who had a hand in it this year. Secondly I’d like to thank our outstanding staff for all their hard work putting together and running a very good week of Board meetings and the Annual Convention.

The annual meetings are a great opportunity to stay informed with the business of the Association, to be able to put a face with the name of the staff member you talk to at the office, or get involved with this breed we all love so much. If you haven’t been able to take in a National Convention before, I’d like to invite you to join us next year in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It’s sure to be a great time and I can promise you’ll leave being glad you attended.

This year’s Commercial Cattleman’s Symposium was very well attended as was the Ladies’ Symposium. The excitement continued into the evening with the Red Angus Foundation Inc. mixer. The highlight of the evening was the RAFI fundraiser. This year’s auction items were very well received with the very generous donation from Bieber Red Angus Ranch being the hot item. Craig, Peggy, Ron and Lois Bieber really stepped up to the plate, donating the pick of their bred heifers with proceeds to go into the RAFI R&D fund. This type of dedication from our stakeholders is what makes it easy to talk about the wonderful members of our Association. Thank you to the Biebers for this contribution to ensure RAAA continues to be in the forefront of research in our industry. For me, the annual convention has always been a time to get to see friends

A big thanks to our retiring president, Kim Ford. Thank you for your leadership the last two years. You’ve stretched a few of us to get out of our comfort zones and we’re better because of your encouragement. Congratulations to our new president, Bob Morton. You have big boots to fill but I’m sure you’re up for it. I’d like to welcome our two new board members. Chuck Feddes, Region A Director and Stuart Gilbert, Area 9 Director. I look forward to serving this association with you over the next three years. Congratulations to John Langdon as well for being re-elected for another term as the Area 7 Director. Last but not least, thank you to Kurt Rich for your knowledge and wisdom you brought to the board. You’ll be missed. n

Association Commentary The Constitution and Bylaws Committee submitted recommended updates and changes to the Association’s Bylaws which, after further modification by the Board of Directors at their June meeting, were presented to the membership and passed with a high-majority vote. Bob Morton from Three Forks, Montana, was elected RAAA president, and Chuck Feddes of Manhattan, Montana, and Stuart Gilbert of Stockport, Iowa, were elected as Directors. Congratulations to these long-time Red Angus breeders. Kyley DeVoe and John Langdon were re-elected to Areas 4 and 7, respectively. Where the Red Angus Roam The Oklahoma Red Angus Association must be commended for their excellence in planning and conducting such a great convention that represented the Red Angus breed and the state of Oklahoma very well. Thanks for your efforts! Special thanks also goes to RAAA

staff Charli Crawford, Chessie Mitchell, Angelia Brooks, Gary Fike, Harold Bertz, Katie Ochsner, Tracey Koester, Halla Pfeiff, Beth Gaines and Larry Keenan for their tireless efforts both before and during the Convention. We also thank all our trade show participants and record-setting convention sponsors. We could not have made it all happen without you. Thanks for being our business partners and friends. Last (certainly not least), we appreciate how our Red Angus Juniors and their advisor, Kim Heller, actively engaged and helped the Convention roll along smoothly, both from the podium and behind the scenes. Spotlighting Excellence and Progress When we talk about the current state of the Red Angus breed, this year’s theme about excellence and progress fit like a glove. The breed’s multi-trait excellence is driving greater demand and accept-

10 American Red Angus Magazine n November 2016

ance across all segments of the beef production chain, from ranch to consumer. Progress is notable both phenotypically and genotypically. Breeders are committed to making an already-great breed even better. They network constantly to leverage each other’s knowledge and experience. That is yet another positive aspect of each year’s Convention. Do you want to know more about how certain bloodlines, cow families, or AI sires are performing? Be sure to attend next year’s Convention in Colorado. Over a meal, during breaks and in the hallways, insight is shared and deals are transacted. Breeder-to-breeder contact is one of the most important aspects of any successful convention. See you in Colorado Springs next September. But before that, plan to attend all the Red Angus events scheduled for Denver in early January. n

Stay Ahead of the Curve by Capitalizing on Marketing Opportunities In Oklahoma City, I attended my first National Red Angus Convention, which was really my introduction to the Red Angus family. This being my first convention, I thought it was an excellent event, where I heard valuable information and had the opportunity to network with some industry difference-makers. I was even further encouraged in hearing Red Angus veterans comment that the event was the best Convention they had attended in years. What made this event so successful? Besides the outstanding speakers and the staff that worked tirelessly to ensure that the event went off without a hitch, here are a couple of ideas why this year’s Convention was surrounded by an air of pure excitement. First and foremost, the people are what make or break an event. I have been working for RAAA for three months now. In that short time, I have felt extremely fortunate to meet a multitude of highcaliber people – individuals who are smart and successful, yet still remain humble and kind. The opportunity to gather with other Red Angus producers and affiliates is something to look forward to, as was evidenced by the way attendees greeted each other. Many are lifelong friends, who now would likely consider themselves closer to family. For me, the opportunity to network with such people is an opportunity to be cherished, and I learn and grow with each person that I meet. The second reason that this year’s Convention had a positive vibe is the superior cattle that were left at home. The demand for Red Angus cattle is high and growing steadily. It is an exciting time to be involved with the Red Angus breed. Even with the cattle prices on the downtrend, there is an uptrend in the number of buyers seeking Red Angus genetics. That said, now is not the time to sit back and pat ourselves on the back, but a time to surge forward. In the potentially difficult times to come in the cattle industry, we must take this opportunity to differentiate the Red Angus breed as the most-favored breed in the industry. The RAAA wants to facili-

tate the process of pushing Red Angus to the top, and here are a few of the programs that will help the dream become a reality.

FCCP/AA The Feeder Calf Certification Program is the beef industry’s mostexperienced age, source and genetic process-verified program. The FCCP tag is an economical way to ensure buyers that calves are at least 50 percent Red Angus. Producers continue to realize tremendous return on investment with this no-enrollment fee, 99¢-tag program. Buyers of yellow-tagged calves can capture more downstream value through marketing options such as the Greater Omaha G.O. Red Grid and the Tyson Choice+ Grid. Alternatively, the RAAA offers the Allied Access tag which carries the age and source verification benefits of the FCCP program, without the 50 percent Red Angus stipulation. Top Dollar Angus® Red Angus cattle are now being accepted into Top Dollar Angus. This program rewards producers who choose top-end genetics by allowing them to capture more value from their calf crop. Cattle that rank in the top 25 percent of the Red Angus breed for growth and carcass traits are eligible to be identified with the Top Dollar Angus brand. Top Dollar Angus recently announced the Seedstock Partnership Program, which will allow seedstock suppliers to incorporate the Top Dollar Angus logo into their sale catalogs, uniquely identifying each bull or female that meets the required genetic specifications.

Red Navigator The ability to differentiate genetically superior females is no longer a tool reserved for seedstock producers. Red Navigator provides vital genetic information on Red Angus-influenced commercial females, allowing ranchers to make more informed decisions regarding mating and culling. Genetic information in the form of individual percentile rank for all EPDs and HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices are provided for tested females. Red Navigator is a breed-specific DNA test, and should only be used on commercial females that are at least 75 percent Red Angus. In life and in business, change is inevitable. Those who accept and adapt to change by capitalizing on new marketing opportunities will stay ahead of the curve and continue to thrive in this industry. The Red Angus marketing team wants to see all involved with the Red Angus breed fit this description, because we want them to prosper as the breed continues to surge forward. n

Member Services Update

Data-Reporting Reservations Fall is setting in and that means deadlines for the Member Services department. We know that it is a busy season for members as well who will be submitting weaning dates and calf weights, downloading sale catalog data extracts, transferring sale animals, and of course, turning in data for the processing of the NCE. With that said, we are still working through the database migration which has improved but still leaves the National Office with a backlog of work to complete. To help improve the flow of work into the office with the goal of preventing an excessive backlog of jobs to process, we have launched a “Reserved Seating” process – taking the cue from the restaurant industry, keeping the patrons happy and having an open table available when desired. We are currently working seven to eight weeks out on the date-received order for processing members’ work. This is an improvement from this time last year, but we are striving to do better. To get a jumpstart on processing data during this busy season, reservations are now being taken for data that will be submitted this fall. For example, if you have calves on the ground now and are waiting for those calves to be weaned in the next four to six weeks, you can submit the pre-registrations with a request for a reservation. We will place your data in a job and then assign a reservation job number to you. Once the calves are weaned, return to the pre-registration file previously submitted and update the weaning data. Re-send that document to the RAAA attaching the assigned reservation number in the email subject line. The new data will be placed in your reserved job and it will be processed in date-received order from the date of your initial reservation, not when your weaning information was submitted, thus “speeding up the clock.” We will also offer this service for other data including sale transfers. Under this scenario, a complete list of animals being sold should be submitted (pending buyers). Once again, when the list has been received, a reservation job number will be assigned, and once your sale has occurred, please update the file with the buyer information and return to the RAAA with the reservation number in the subject line for final processing. The request for a reservation on transfers does not “stop the clock” on days from the date of sale to the submission of data. If the list of completed buyers is not received into the RAAA within 60 days of the sale date, you will still be subject to any applicable late fees. All requests for reservations must be made in writing and can be submitted to the office via email, mail or fax. No reservations will be taken by phone.

Report Progeny for 2015 Calf Crop With the current calf crop either weaned or near it, review to make sure all 2015 calves have data reported. Each cow on the active inventory for 2015 should have either a calf or a disposal code submitted to avoid inactivation. If a female has been inactivated, she will be subject to reactivation fees if a calf is reported after she has been inactivated. DNA Reminder The turnaround time for DNA processing is 15 to 20 business days. If a deadline is to be met, please be sure to get samples submitted to the National Office with the processing time in mind. n

Happy Thanksgiving to all from the RAAA! The National Office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday Nov. 25, in observance of the holiday.

22 American Red Angus Magazine n November 2016

How to submit a “Reservation Request” 1) Submit “Reservation Request” in writing, either via email, mail or fax. 2) Provide an explanation of what is to be submitted: Registrations, Transfers, Weaning or Yearling Updates. Include the approximate number of head and an approximate date the data will be complete and submitted. Reservations are only taken up to six weeks in advance. Do not request a reservation for work that will be submitted more than six weeks later. 3) Send request to appropriate email address. Registrations, Weaning Updates or Yearling Updates: web.rrts@redangus.org Transfers: web.transfer@redangus.org 4) Once a reservation request has been received, a confirmation and “reservation job number” will be returned to you. Do not lose this number, as it is required to submit remaining data. If the reservation number is not included with the subsequent submission, a new job will be created and processed separately in date-received order. The reservation number is critical. 5) Once you have completed your animals’ updated information, return it to the correct email, (listed above) and in the subject line include “Reservation job #000000.” The submitted data will then be placed into the initial reservation file to be pulled in date-received order for processing. If you have any questions about what will be accepted for reservations, please contact the office for clarification.

JRA Update

Successful Convention in Oklahoma City Another National Red Angus Convention has come and gone! The JRA Board had a productive and fun time while in Oklahoma City. They took advantage of the opportunity to network with RAAA members and staff, plan upcoming events, and raise support for junior programs.

LiveWiRED The JRA Board is excited about a unique opportunity to explore EPDs over the next three years in a project featuring the progeny of Penny, a Gelbvieh cow flushed to selected sires representing both EPD high-bell-curve and low-bell-curve Red Angus sires. The goal of the project is to isolate the genetic differences of the bulls and demonstrate EPDs through evaluating two sets of calves from birth through harvest (25 head per sire group). While in Oklahoma City, the JRA Board determined ways to integrate EPD education and exploration throughout the upcoming Junior Red Angus activities and events. Finally, the JRA Board is extremely grateful for all the RAAA members and affiliate associations that supported the Convention Silent Auction, RAFI Auction and Raffle, and the JRA Sponsorship Campaign during Convention. The funds raised are a tremendous asset to advance our mission to equip and prepare all JRA stakeholders to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture. National Junior Show is Just Around the Corner! See Red Angus cattle in the spotlight this November in Louisville, Kentucky, at the North American International Livestock Exposition. Activities specifically designed to connect and highlight junior members will take place November 12 and 13. On Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m., the national JRA Board will host two workshops for juniors. Gain a better understanding of EPDs during an educational workshop led by Harold Bertz, RAAA commercial marketing

programs coordinator, and engage in another fun workshop to learn more about JRA events and offerings. Connect with other junior members at the social in the Red Angus stalls starting at 3 p.m. Saturday while enjoying a sweet RED treat from the JRA Board. Finally, join the excitement as Red Angus cattle are featured on the green shavings for the National Junior Show in Broadbent Arena Sunday at 9 a.m. If you have questions about the National Show, contact Chessie Mitchell at 940387-3502.

This maximizes sponsor marketing through additional event recognition and optimizes the Board’s efforts in raising support. Sponsor forms received by Dec. 15 will ensure recognition beginning with the events held during the National Western Stock Show. However, forms will continue to be accepted until May 1. 2016 RAAA National Convention Association Business and Director Elections Held During Convention by Beth Gaines, RAAA Communication Coordinator

A full two days of presentations, discussions and elections filled the agenda for Red Angus Association of America members attending the National Convention held Sept. 7 – 9 in Oklahoma City at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center. The meeting roster included 116 voting members and over 236 individuals in attendance. Lori White, president of the Oklahoma Red Angus Association, brought greetings to the group and provided tremendous hospitality during the week. The Oklahoma affiliate was instrumental in the planning of the event, and scheduled the entertainment which included a taste of the Old West with a trick roper and Native American dancers. As is tradition, the pre-convention educational workshop focused on commercial beef production and business strategies. The commercial marketing team developed the “Putting Dollars in Your Pocket,” program which featured Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension ag economist; Tom Brink, RAAA CEO; Dr. John Arthington, University of Florida director of the Range Cattle Research and Education Center; and Darrell Busby, livestock specialist and manager of the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity. Symposium speakers addressed 200 cattlemen and women on overall profitability in the industry, present economic conditions, nutritional changes to improve cowherd efficiency, and calf crop marketing methods. Thursday, when the convention officially opened, the membership received an update from CEO Tom Brink, which included the overview of the registration activity and the 38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2016

growth of the organization for the last fiscal year. Finance Committee Chairman Johnny Rogers provided a fiscal summary of the business. Kim Ford also presented her presidential address, and reflected back on her two years of service for “Team Red Angus.” A special inspiration for the convention this year was hearing from Dr. Tom Field, director of University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship program. He shared a message of vision and encouragement for the organization as it continues to develop, grow and experience success. He also challenged Red Angus breeders to think critically and plan for the future, taking into consideration the new marketing demands being made by the millennial consumer. Over the two full days of meeting sessions, the membership heard from each of the standing committees, and the RAAA staff members that support those committee activities. They recapped the past year’s activities as well as providing a snapshot of programs under development. Two new programs that were introduced include an Elite Cow Competition and a Bull Voucher program intended to encourage cattlemen who have never purchased Red Angus genetics to make an investment in the breed.

2016 RAAA National Convention More information on these programs will be presented during the year as the final details are refined. The business session was held Friday afternoon. Following the Area and Region caucus meetings, members selected Bob Morton of Three Forks, Montana, as president of the Association. New board members include Chuck Feddes of Manhattan, Montana, who was elected to represent Region A, and Stuart Gilbert of Stockport, Iowa, elected to the position of Director of Area 9 – Midwest. Reelected to the RAAA Board of Directors were Kyley DeVoe, Director of Area 4 – Southwest, and John Langdon, Director Area 7 – Northeast. Also during the business meeting, the proposed changes to the RAAA Constitution and Bylaws were approved by the membership.

40 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2015

Following the business meeting, the Board of Directors selected Kevin Miller as first vice president, Steve Koester as Board secretary, and Johnny Rogers as treasurer, to fill the leadership roles of the organization.

The 2017 National Convention will be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is scheduled a week later than traditionally planned, Sept. 13-15, 2017.

Shelly Ammann ended on a positive note encouraging others to use the Top Dollar Angus program and reminding producers that, although set back from recent years, calves are still selling at record prices. “You just have to keep it all in perspective,” she said.

Top Dollar Angus® Enrollment is Easy and Rewarding

by Trinity Lewis “If you have the records and know your pedigrees well, go for it,” commented Shelly Ammann in reference to the Top Dollar Angus marketing program. Residing in western South Dakota, Rick and Shelly Ammann have been running Red Angus cattle for nearly 30 years. Although they are a commercial operation, they pay close attention to keeping good genetics a top priority. With strict requirements, they aren’t afraid to send cattle down the road if they don’t reflect a superior profile. As a result of their careful management, the Ammanns were a great fit for the Top Dollar Angus program which requires bulls with high quality EPDs in order to even be considered. “When I called to get information on how to enroll [in Top Dollar Angus] we just went through our AIsire list to figure out what bulls our cows and calves were out of and it was easy beans after that. We emailed a couple of times and, boom, it was done,” she explained. With females as their main objective and steers as a bi-product, the Ammanns have been excited to see the fruits of their labor when, even in a down market, their steers sold for a premium as a result of great genetics and solid marketing. Ammanns sold their steers in Superior Livestock Auction’s Big Horn Classic video sale this August and garnered a $63per-head premium, topping 23 comparable lots. The Ammanns’ cattle are gaining widespread attention and the family is now selling heifers as well.

Seedstock Partnership Program

Top Dollar Angus, Inc. is pleased to announce its new Seedstock Partnership Program. With the fall sale season going strong, now is the perfect time to take advantage of this new opportunity. The Seedstock Partnership Program allows seedstock providers to elevate their Red Angus and Angus bulls and females that genetically excel in growth and carcass value potential. It will also allow seedstock breeders to offer their bull customers a value-added marketing opportunity through Top Dollar Angus. Kenny Stauffer, Top Dollar Angus general manager, noted that this is a tremendous opportunity for program differentiation. “There is no better way for high-end Red Angus and Angus breeders to stand out from the crowd and to thank their customers for continuing to buy their bulls. This program will allow genetic providers to identify their elite growth and carcass animals, and bring added value to their bull customers by helping them become involved in Top Dollar Angus.” For a modest fee, seedstock suppliers who participate in the partnership program can incorporate the Top Dollar Angus logo into their sale catalogs, identifying each bull or female that meets required genetic specifications (top 25 percent growth and carcass traits). The certification process is simple and involves providing the list of sale animals for review. Top Dollar Angus will promptly return the list to the breeder, indicating which animals qualify for Top Dollar Angus designation. In addition to the use of the Top Dollar Angus brand and logo, each breeder will receive credits to offset the herd enrollment fees for up to four of their top bull customers. It’s a great way to reach out to customers and demon-

Enrollment fees for Top Dollar Angus Seedstock Partnership Program:

• 86-plus head = $1,000 (4 vouchers) • 85 to 25 head = $500 (2 vouchers) • 24 head and under = $250 (1 voucher) With enrollment, the seedstock partner receives confirmation of which sale animals qualify for Top Dollar Angus designation and can then publish the Top Dollar Angus logo by those sale lots. The seedstock partner also receives up to four enrollment credit vouchers for their customers to cover the $225herd-enrollment fee. The voucher does not cover the $4-per-head fee for feeder calves.

strate how much you care about their calf crop marketing success. “We have already signed up more than a dozen Red Angus and Angus seedstock breeders, and are seeing them use the enrollment credits to benefit their customers,” said Stauffer. The Seedstock Partnership Program will allow a “top dollar” seedstock operation to stand out from the competition. By becoming a Top Dollar Angus Seedstock Partner and directly supporting your customers’ involvement in Top Dollar Angus, you will be offering them a marketing advantage in today’s challenging calf market. “Top Dollar Angus has numerous buyers and feedlots that are willing to pay premium prices for high-end Red Angus and Angus feeder calves, but we need more qualified cattle every day to meet this demand. Top Dollar Angus will provide your customers with a better way to market their calves at market-topping prices, helping them attain a stronger return on investment with bulls they buy from you. This will keep them coming back to you — their seedstock supplier — for more Top Dollar Angus certified genetics,” he concluded. ■

McDowell Mixes It Up with Grids, Grass and Aggressive Marketing by Brenda Black for American Red Angus Magazine, Photography by Austin Black

John McDowell, a 2016 Grid Master Award winner from Greenfield, Missouri, is not afraid of change. At 61 years of age, he's open to new strategies for breeding, feeding and marketing beef. His unapologetic opinions for contemporary methods, along with his infectious laugh, suggest not only why he's successful at raising and selling all-natural beef, but that he gets a kick out of mixing things up.

54 American Red Angus Magazine â– November 2016

McDowell markets their all-natural Red Angus beef directly to consumers at farmers’ markets in Springfield, Branson and Kansas City, Missouri.

McDowell first garnered a Grid Master Award in 2012. This time around, he picked up three awards for three different loads of cattle that reflected McDowell's ability to combine Red Angus genetics, feeding management and precise marketing for superior beef carcasses. To obtain the award, his naturally fed Red Angus cattle were required to achieve 90 percent Choice and Prime, with no more than 10 percent Yield Grade 4s and a minimum grid score of 100. Two of McDowell's loads went 100 percent Choice. “We're looking for more Prime,” said McDowell. “We've always had a few in every load, but our goal is to find more Primes in the mix.” He's been feeding cattle for 20 years and used to settle for average. To move the needle on quality during the second half of the game, McDowell's introduced Red Angus genetics to his commercial program 13 years ago.

Clientele want to hear the story about their beef, and meeting McDowell and learning how the animals are raised help them make purchasing decisions on the premium product.

McDowell Mixes It Up with Grids, Grass and Aggressive Marketing Bull Power “Our Red Angus bulls have been good enough, long enough to make our cattle better,” said McDowell, who runs strictly Red Angus bulls on Hereford, Angus, Charolais and Red Angus females. “We are giving more money to get top bulls, and we've been more selective on heifers we retain.”

McDowell said he wants the bull he brings home to be balanced and be a bull that “will keep the cowherd on the straight and narrow path.” He expects bulls and females in production to be easy keepers, maintain longevity and lay in good marbling for that sought after Prime carcass. “I look at all the traits, but try not to chase one trait too hard,” he said. “You'll mess up and go backward when you do that. I want a cow that'll work in fescue country. It's hot and dry in the summer and cold and wet in the winter here in Missouri.” Red Angus fits his mix. That's a tough bill to fill for one who is adamant that he has no patience for non-performers. “Every time I buy a bull, I look at what we've had before,” he said. “He has to be better.”

Regardless of hide color, steers sired by Red Angus bulls are eligible for enrollment into RAAA’s yellow tag Feeder Calf Certification Program, opening doors for marketing opportunities.

McDowell Mixes It Up with Grids, Grass and Aggressive Marketing Standard of Excellence That goes for the female side too. “We're getting ready to DNA test some bred heifers,” McDowell said. “One DNA test returns six traits and the other tests 13 traits. It will tell you everything about that heifer. So shaving 50 percent from the bottom end in order to retain only the very best is not a problem for me when I have that kind of information. When we wean heifers, they get their shots and get turned out on pasture. Then when we bring them in as yearlings, we measure pelvic area, cull for feet, legs, eyes and any defects. If the pelvis is not big enough or the right conformation or there are any reproductive-tract problems, they are gone. We turn out the ones that pass with the bull. After they've run with the bull, they are vaccinated and pregnancy tested. If not pregnant, they are culled. So by the time they are bred heifers, they've already been culled two times. There's no mercy. If she's going to stay at our place, she has to make the grade.” Modern Methods Like those heifers scrutinized through ear notches and hair DNA samples, if a new concept seems beneficial, old ways may be on the chopping block. Take for example, the way McDowell used to feed his cattle.

McDowell DNA tests his replacement heifers in order to retain the top 50 percent. Any open heifers are culled after pregnancy checking.

McDowell Mixes It Up with Grids, Grass and Aggressive Marketing Present day strategies are nothing close to how he first finished beef. “When we started, we just fed a little corn silage and a little something else,” said McDowell, who operates two farms equaling about 1,200 acres and is home to 350 commercial cows. “Now, we've completely quit. We used to hire custom silage choppers to harvest feed. We don't do that anymore. Now, we harvest cover crop – we bale it wet and make haylage and do it all ourselves.” In the move away from grain, grass is like gold in a program where no implants are injected and where it can take 19 to 30 months to finish an animal for slaughter. “Mother Nature is the biggest challenge,” said McDowell, so he tries to work in concert with her to get as much as possible out of every growing season. And he supplements. His forage-based ration reads like one of grandma's secret recipes with a little of this and a pinch of that. Among the ingredients are wheat, winter oats, rye grass, turnips, radishes, red clover and more. He buys the seeds, mixes and no-till drills it himself. McDowell plants his customized concoction for grazing as well as haylage. A three-day seminar in North Dakota enlightened him to the far-reaching benefits.

60 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2016

A variety of cover crop forages and plentiful moisture will allow rotational grazing well into the winter months. Red Angus sires unify his calf crop out of a cowherd with a diverse genetic background.

McDowell Mixes It Up with Grids, Grass and Aggressive Marketing He cites personal friends from North Carolina, North Dakota and Ohio as go-to sources on the topic of cover crops and soil conservation. “These people are way out in front of most of us, he said. “They are leaders in the movement. This year, an unusually wet summer in McDowell's home state rendered a bumper crop of lush cool-season grasses standing 10 feet tall that will take his cowherd well into winter by incorporating rotational grazing. “And that's with no fertilizer, no herbicide, no chemicals, McDowell said. “All natural. Nothing added. And our land is a lot better. Soil wants to be covered like people want clothing when it's zero. When we quit applying chemicals on our crop ground where our cover crops are, and quit single cropping, the soil began making big leaps in quality. Harvesting Forage Through Beef From the soil below, to the grass converted to beef through McDowell's Red Angus-influenced herd, every step of the process means only the best makes it to market. Most of their cattle are shipped to Scott City, Kansas, to Fairleigh Feed Yard, with McDowell retaining ownership. “They have a pretty big presence in the natural feeding area, McDowell said.

McDowell’s cattle graze six to eight different grasses over their life span. He adds a little grain to their forage-based finishing ration for added carcass quality.

McDowell Mixes It Up with Grids, Grass and Aggressive Marketing “The cattle we do ship go into National Beef© NatureSource® Natural Beef program. They pay a premium and they are good to get along with and we still have third-party verification with the RAAA's yellow tag Feeder Calf Certification Program.” McDowell also markets direct. As with his genetics and grass, where he goes to sell his product has morphed from old ways to new as well. Since April, McDowell has been selling his beef through modern venues to discriminating clientele at farmers’ markets in the metro. After a year and a half on a waiting list, McDowell Land & Cattle's All-Natural Red Angus Beef is now available to Springfield, Branson and Kansas City, Missouri, residents willing to pay a premium. McDowell and his wife Mary Ann set up shop in a booth with “a great big ole' sign” touting Red Angus. They merchandise their products right next to vendors peddling everything from lamb, quail eggs, buffalo and goat each week at the trendy bazaars. “It has been an overwhelming success!” McDowell said. “We have repeat customers and they all seem to love it. They've been buying us out of steaks every week!” The McDowells will take orders for beef quarters, halves and wholes, but

most of their customers want to buy one package at a time right out of their portable freezer. They come for the hormone-free and antibiotic-free meat because they believe it to be healthy. According to McDowell, the value of $5-perpound roasts, $14.50-per-pound steaks and $20-per-pound filets aren't in question. It's the story they need to hear to help them with their purchasing decisions. “They want to know where it came from and how it got to the freezer,” McDowell said. “They want to know who we are and how we treat and raise our animals. They want to know the name of the steer sometimes. We tell them what they want. Some want to hear a lot. Some just need to hear that it is all natural. Some want all grass fed. For that, we have to send them to another vendor. We do give a little grain at the end, even though the cattle are on grass all their life and get six to seven to eight kinds of grass from those cover crops. Still we have to be honest.” Ironically, some of their customers don't know how to prepare it once they get their product home. “So many – like 90 percent – are disconnected from their food,” McDowell said. “You wouldn't believe how many ask how to cook it after they buy it. Mary Ann is going to have to fix up a recipe sheet to give out with the product.”

“A lady came by who had cooked up some of our Kansas City Strips the week before,” McDowell said. “She was telling me how her sister couldn't get over that she cut hers with a butter knife. And another older lady came back to buy more. She said, 'I cooked that roast like I have for 40 years, and my kids and the whole family said that was the best they'd ever had.' Those are the stories we like to here.” McDowell attributes much of the tenderness to not just breeding and feeding, but stress-free management of the livestock destined for dinner tables. “It makes a difference if they are fed right and handled right,” he said. “They are not pushed around. They are bred for docility. There's no need to have one that runs over the fence all the time. I don't want to chase that kind and I don't want to eat them.” The happy customers the McDowell's are amassing are spreading the word about Red Angus all-natural beef. “One customer stopped by and bought stew meat and 2 pounds of ground beef,” McDowell said. “She's giving one pound to a relative that's been dying to try it. And like that lady who cut hers with a butter knife, she's not going to tell that story only once. It's all about word of mouth and I'm sure they are telling others.” ■

Data Points Influence Reliability of Cowherd-Building Traits by Larry Keenan, Director of Breed Improvement

For the last 20 years, Red Angus commercial producers have enjoyed the increased reliability of Red Angus EPDs due to the application of Total Herd Reporting (THR). Similar to the fact that commercial producers’ profitability is based on their entire calf crop and not just the top 50 percent, the implementation of THR ensures that Red Angus EPDs are calculated using the seedstock producer’s entire calf crop and not just the top end. THR also provides the necessary framework for collection of cowherdbuilding data – such as heifer exposure (Heifer Pregnancy) and mature cow weight and body condition score (Maintenance Energy) data. While these particular data points are not required as part of THR, they are increasingly relevant to both seedstock and commercial producers.

Heifer Exposure Data The Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) EPD serves as the gold-standard fertility trait as it measures a heifer’s ability to conceive and calve as a 2-year-old. The logic behind the HPG EPD calculation is very simple: Of the heifers exposed to breeding, which ones delivered a calf. While the logic of the HPG EPD is straightforward, in order to perform the analysis we must know which heifers were exposed to breeding before they can be included in the HPG EPD evaluation. Through general ranch management record keeping, the vast majority of members collect the needed information to include on the Heifer Exposure Report.

GUIDE TO BODY CONDITION SCORES BCS 1: The cow is severely emaciated and physically weak with all ribs and bone structure easily visible. Cattle in this score are extremely rare and are usually inflicted with a disease and/or parasitism. BCS 2: The cow appears emaciated, similar to BCS 1 described above, but not weakened. Muscle tissue seems severely depleted through the hindquarters and shoulders. BCS 3: The cow is very thin with no fat on ribs or in brisket and the backbone is easily visible. Some muscle depletion appears evident through the hindquarters. BCS 4: The cow appears thin, with ribs easily visible and the backbone showing. The spinous processes (along the edge of the loin) are still very sharp and barely visible individually. Muscle tissue is not depleted through the shoulders and hindquarters. BCS 5: The cow may be described as moderate to thin. The last two ribs can be seen and little evidence of fat is present in the brisket, over the ribs or around the tail head. The spinous processes are now smooth and no longer individually identifiable. BCS 6: The cow exhibits a good smooth appearance throughout. Some fat deposition is present in the brisket and over the tail head. The back appears rounded and fat can be palpated over the ribs and pin bones. BCS 7: The cow appears in very good flesh. The brisket is full, the tail head shows pockets of fat and the back appears square due to fat. The ribs are very smooth and soft handling due to fat cover. BCS 8: The cow is obese. Her neck is thick and short and her back appears very square due to excessive fat. The brisket is distended and she has heavy fat pockets around the tail head. BCS 9: These cows are very obese and are rarely seen. They can be described as similar to eight but taken to greater extremes. They also have a heavy deposition of udder fat. 68 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2016

Data Points Influence Reliability of Cowherd-Building Traits Required data points include: • Beginning and ending date of breeding/exposure • Inventory season (spring or fall) • Management group It’s that easy. When you turned the bulls in and when you pulled them out. A couple notes: 1) If you are AIing your heifers, the beginning date should be your AI date and ending date should be when you remove the cleanup bulls; 2) If heifers are in different pastures and exposed to different bulls, use different management codes to indicate such. Mature Weight and Body Condition Score Red Angus’ Maintenance Energy (ME) EPD serves as the sole genetic prediction that considers the expense side of producers’ profit equation, as it measures differences in maintenance energy requirements – feed required to simply maintain cow weight and condition. Inclusion of ME EPD in producers’ selection decisions allows for the identification of bulls whose daughters will require less feed, which will directly reduce cowherd expenses. Alternatively, producers can use the ME EPD to ensure feed costs don’t significantly increase as greater selection pressure is placed on increased performance. The data required for the ME EPD calculation:

70 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2016

• Cow weight at time of weaning • Body condition score (BCS) at time of weaning While these data points are tougher to collect, they are the only route to increasing the accuracy of ME EPD calculations. In addition to the genetic improvement aspect, collection of mature weight and BCS will also provide producers with critical information for general herd management decisions. A few notes: 1) BCS should be determined consistently within a contemporary group by using one person, average of two people, etc.; 2) If logistics creates challenges in weighing the cows, implement a multi-year plan where you weigh one pasture per year; 3) While we prefer that the cow weights and BCS are taken at weaning, we will accept cow weights and BCS before or after weaning. Ideally the weights would be taken within 30 days of weaning. Red Angus females are currently – and rightfully so – enjoying their status as the industry’s most-preferred female. As opportunists, we should capitalize on furthering the genetic superiority of Red Angus females and growing the breed even further through increasing the accuracy of Red Angus’ HPG and ME EPDs. We should all challenge each other to collect a greater percentage of the data, especially the cowherd-building data. ■

Dr. Thomas A. Walker Dr. Thomas A. Walker of Temple, Texas, died at his home on Sept. 8, 2016, at the age of 86. Dr. Walker was born on Dec. 15, 1929, in Wewoka, Oklahoma, to Dr. A. A. Walker and Mary Francis White Walker. Following service in the Army and his graduation from Phillips University and the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, he practiced medicine with his father in Wewoka. Tom was a third-generation Oklahoma physician. While attending Phillips University, he met Janice P. Denker of Enid, Oklahoma, and they were married on June 14, 1950. In 1963, he began a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Scott & White. Dr. Walker served on the staff of Scott & White Clinic until 1970 when he and Drs. Harry Macey and Wayne Baden formed the Women’s Clinic in Temple where he practiced until his retire-

ment in 1993. He was a Rotarian, a member of First United Methodist Church of Temple, and his interests included playing in bridge tournaments with his wife, serving as an Explorer Scout leader, canoeing and kayaking, sailing, fishing in Port O’Connor with family and friends every Fourth of July, and enjoying anything involving the outdoors or fixing things. In retirement, Dr. Walker began raising registered Red Angus cattle at his farm in Heidenheimer, Texas, and he was involved with and held various offices in the national and state Red Angus associations. He loved involving his family and grandchildren in all aspects of his farming operation. Weekends at the farm with Dr. Tom (“PaPa” to his grandchildren) created lasting memories and fun for all. He also participated in the 911 Club, a group of octogenarians who ate lunch together every Wednesday at Al’s BBQ. They called their lunch club the 911 Club because “at their age, who knew what might happen.” Survivors include his wife, Janice Walker; three children and their spouses, Jeanne Cunningham and husband, John; Deborah Punchard and husband, Neil; and Garry Walker and wife, Linda, all of Temple; five grandchildren, Jaima Punchard of Houston, Preston Cunningham of Houston, Scott Cunningham of McKinney, Rob Punchard of Temple, and Catherine Salzman of Cincinnati; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, John Walker of Amarillo and Bob Walker of Sulphur, Oklahoma.

Jimmy Dwayne Hagemann was born July 29, 1965, at Madison, South Dakota, to Gordon and Lois (Beyer) Hagemann. Jim grew up in the Winfred area and attended school in Howard. He graduated from Howard High School in 1983, then started his career of farming, first with his family and later on his own. Jim enjoyed farming and loved raising Red Angus cattle and has done so since the 1990s. He was married to GayLynn Pitts on Sept. 27, 1986. The couple farmed north of Winfred. To this union three children were born – Melissa, Mandi and Macy.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and pulling a prank now and then. He dearly loved his wife Barbee, his children and family, and will be missed by all that knew him. He was a person that would help anyone when asked to do so. Those grateful for having shared in his life include his wife Barbee of Winfred; his three daughters: Melissa (Josh Edmondson) Hagemann of Le Sueur, Minnesota; Mandi (Zach Torkelson) Hagemann of Howard; Macy Hagemann of Brookings, South Dakota; a stepdaughter, Brianna Murphy of Watertown; a stepson, Zach Murphy of White, South Dakota; his parents, Gordon and Lois Hagemann of Madison; a brother, Craig Hagemann of Winfred; three sisters: Brenda (Brad) Franken of Madison; Connie (Dan) Wall of Madison; Barb (Jerome) Kipp of Montrose, South Dakota; and other relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his grandparents and a very special uncle, Oscar. ■
