GROWTH from Birth to Market Beckton bulls are leaders in total rate of growth, from birth to market weight. The average birth weight EPD of our sale bulls last year was minus 4.0, and the average yearling weight EPD is plus +80. Beckton cattle start with low birth weight and reach a high market (yearling) weight quickly – for quicker marketability and less cost to market. The new HERD-BUILDER Index recently developed and implemented by the Red Angus Association combines economically relevant EPD’s (maternal, growth and carcass traits as well as fertility), and weights each EPD for its contribution to overall herd profitability. Designed for commercial producers retaining replacement heifers, this single index measure compares and ranks all Red Angus sires in the breed, to provide a single measure of expected profitability for every sire compared to all other Red Angus sires.

41 of the 50 highest ranking sires on the Red Angus Herd Builder Index are Beckton sires or descended from Beckton sires, including 16 of the top 20.

Investing in JRA Today Secures Our Future Calving season is one of the most anticipated times of the year to me, and as I ride through the pasture this morning looking for the first calf of the season, my thoughts turn to the parallels between young people and baby calves. I’ve just become an “empty nester” and the first similarity that I’ve noticed is that neither kids nor calves stay young for very long. That fragile baby calf that struggles today to stand and nurse, will be out on its own a year from now and possibly having its own progeny in two years. Thankfully, children don’t grow up quite that quickly, but they grow quite fast enough, and it is extremely important to invest time and resources in them while they are young. No doubt that for the newborn calf every day is a classroom, learning about the environment, how to find food, comfort and safety. The calf is born with part of the knowledge it needs – its instincts – but it learns a lot from its mother and from other cows. And, while this may sound scary, we all should realize that someone is watching us. I’m not talking about aliens, stalkers or government spies. I’m referring to young people everywhere who look to adults as role models of how to live in our environment. We have a responsibility to our young people, not just to leave this world better than we found it, but also to prepare them to thrive here as well.

themselves, but also to take the Red Angus message to young people all over the nation. By holding educational meetings and activities in their respective regions, the JRA Board is able to come in contact with more of our 800-plus junior members and build awareness for the beef industry. Our five JRA directors are super individuals and together they make a great team, but they cannot accomplish this task alone. Volunteer leaders play a vital role in helping JRA members prepare to be future leaders and “agvocates” as well. The Red Angus Foundation also provides assistance to our juniors with resources and funding of scholarships, travel assistance and other training programs. As you can see, there are countless opportunities for making an investment in our young people and preparing them for the future world of agriculture. If you are not already involved in a state or regional junior Red Angus program, contact Kim Heller, junior programs coordinator, at kim@redangus.org to inquire how you can be a part of working with the tremendous young people that are involved with Red Angus cattle. Whether you are best suited to offer time, talents, resources or all of the above, I encourage you to get involved with these great, young Red Angus enthusiasts. You will be glad that you did and they will keep you young! n

The Junior Red Angus Association of America has a goal of equipping and preparing all JRA stakeholders to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture. Our JRA Board members work throughout the year to not only develop as leaders

The Future of Genetic Selection Incorporating DNA to Eliminate Low-Value Animals Beef’s Genetic History During the 1980s and 1990s, genetic selection in U.S. beef cattle focused primarily on obtaining MORE of the desired traits. This was especially true when it came to growth and size. We wanted heavier pay weights (a good thing), but for a while the industry let cattle get too big while pursuing growth. Time and experience made us wiser, and so while we have continued to emphasize growth, the approach has changed. The more recent past has been about finding outlier animals that grew rapidly to a year or 18 months of age, then slowed down and matured at an acceptable size. Breeding such antagonistic traits into a single animal was not easy and took time to achieve. Now, however, we have become well accustomed to curve-bender bulls whose progeny grow fast early on, but mature at an average or below-average size. The industry now has many bulls (including many Red Angus) that excel at producing both steers for the feedlot and heifers for the replacement pen. We no longer need to accept a large mature size to get rapid growth. Nor must we tolerate slow growth animals to be assured of moderate mature sizes. That is quite a genetic accomplishment! Along the way, breeders also successfully de-coupled birth weights and growth. It is now common to see bulls with good calving ease that still produce calves which are competitive in both pre- and postweaning growth. Not every bull available

8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2016

can do this impressive feat, but an increasing number are up to the task. Here is a phenotypic attribute that has also seen great improvement in the past couple decades. Remember when finding sires with adequate depth and spring of rib was difficult? Twenty years ago there was no over-abundance of bulls that were deep ribbed and deep flanked, while also demonstrating that bold-sprung look most of us favor. Back in the day, deepbodied bulls were too often slab-sided and flat. In some breeds, pencil-gutted bulls were everywhere. Fast forward to today and this is not a problem. Lots of bulls are deep and bold in their rib shape, which provides a wider range of choices and frees us up to focus on other traits and characteristics we choose to work on within our breeding programs. These are all examples of genetic progress that are real and tangible. Success came slowly, but it came nonetheless. And because of these efforts, we have a much stronger genetic foundation to build on in the years ahead. Shifting from history to looking ahead, the next question logically becomes, “What path should our genetic improvement efforts follow during the rest of this decade and the next? What approach should we take to make further progress?” Linear Trait Selection Not as Important Today First, the need to increase EPD traits like Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight and Milk in a purely linear fashion has decreased.

We thank you for your support this past year and look forward to seeing all of you at the

Association Commentary Some cattle in the overall population still need more growth and milk, but the top end of the bell curve is pretty high for those traits already. A greater need in genetic selection going forward is to eliminate bottom-end performers. Diligently culling the low end of the bell curve for all important traits is, perhaps, the next big thing in beef cattle selection. Eliminating below-average animals and multiplying those ranking above average offers real opportunity, both genetically and economically. But how can we do that? Cull Bottom-End Heifers in Every Way Possible This may not sound new, but the way we go about heifer selection is about to take a big jump forward. To explain, let’s look at the heifer culling and retention process as it takes place currently. Heifer selection is critical to herd improvement in seedstock and commercial herds alike. When it comes to picking replacement heifers, we are accustomed to culling the bottom end

for those attributes we can visually see and/or easily measure. We cull dinks, bad attitudes, along with heifers that have bad feet and legs and otherwise poor structure or phenotype. We cull heifers that ratio poorly in important trait(s). We cull heifers whose dams have bad udders, dams that calve late, or have other physical problems. In fescue country, we cull heifers that do not shed hair very well. We might even cull heifers that don’t breed in the first 45 to 60 days of the breeding season. The list could go on, and there is no question that these culling decisions affect our long-term success. We need to keep diligently culling for these observable, physical traits, because we do not want to propagate any subpar genetics into future generations of our herds. But our efforts should not stop there. Though it is fairly new on the scene, DNA can also play a key role in this process by helping to identify heifers with poor genetics for the traits we cannot see. For ex-

10 American Red Angus Magazine n December 2016

ample, suppose a group of commercial Red Angus heifers are tested with the Red Navigator DNA test and those heifers that rank in the bottom 25 percent of the breed for multiple traits are eliminated no matter how good they look. Heifers that rank low in only two or three DNA-quantified traits are given a pass, but those ranking toward the bottom of the bell curve in five or six traits are culled with no questions asked. Then, we apply our normal selection criteria to those heifers remaining in the replacement candidate group. Would this be an effective way to incorporate DNA technology with visual appraisal in the heifer selection process? YES, indeed. This combination will be an exceedingly powerful pathway toward genetic progress that avoids extremes. Look for the most progressive producers in the business to rapidly engage this approach in the years ahead, while continuing to buy and use the best bulls they can find. n

Corporate Office Relocating to Denver Area in 2017 RAAA Announcement:

After a unanimous vote by its Board of Directors in October, the Red Angus Association of America will relocate its corporate office to the Denver, Colorado, vicinity during the first half of 2017. Plans for the new location are currently being finalized. RAAA President Bob Morton said such a move has been considered off and on for at least a decade. “Moving the office to a more geographically central location of the U.S. has been discussed since I started on the Board six years ago,” said Morton. “Plus, our building in Denton, Texas, is showing its age.” The industry is changing; it’s time to take cattle feeding down a new road. Recent advancements in cattle nutrition have opened new routes to help limit pulls, treatment and positively benefit the health of an animal. Adopting a new measure of prevention through the feed is an important first step to help minimize delays on the road ahead. Take a new road with ProTernative® - a proven probiotic that positively activates the immune system of cattle during times of stress. ProTernative works in the lower gut to influence the animal’s natural immunity through an internal active process that only a specific, robust and active live yeast can deliver.

The road you’ve always taken doesn’t cut it anymore. Feed ProTernative and take a new measure of prevention.

Not all products are available in all markets nor are all claims allowed in all regions. ©2016. ProTernative is a registered trademark of Lallemand Animal Nutrition.

12 American Red Angus Magazine n December 2016

Morton explained, “We are in a financial position to make the move and believe the northeast Denver area will serve us well for decades to come. Denver is a well-established hub for the livestock industry and a great place to recruit talented people for our staff.” CEO Tom Brink noted that a transition plan is in place, with Denton office staff a top priority in the relocation. “We want to see everyone land on their feet whether they choose to make the move with us or not,” he said. All of the Denton staff has the option to continue in their current roles at the new location. “Some of the staff will be coming with us to the Denver area, while others may ultimately elect not to relocate,” Brink continued. “Either way, we will do everything possible to make the transition smooth for both our staff and for the Association. Business will continue every day up to and through the move. There will be a brief overlap period during which we will be operating in both locations, old and new, to minimize any disruption to our operations.” More information on the move to Denver will be provided to RAAA members in the coming months as additional details become available. n

Marketing Update

The first USDA Process Verified Program of its kind, FCCP has long been a leader in value-added marketing for feeder cattle and replacement heifers in the industry. FCCP-enrolled cattle are USDA age, source and genetic verified. This past year, over 160,000 head were enrolled in the program and RAAA noticed a 20 percent increase in enrollment from the prior fiscal year.

by Chessie Mitchell, Tag Program Coordinator

Looking Back While Thinking Forward

What’s that old David Lee Murphy song say? “It’s one of those things that gets sweeter with time.” The Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program may be 20 years old, but it is booming in the beef industry today.

My father-in-law always tells us, “Before you take that next step, stop and think about what we have done to get where we are today. All of the hard work, long hours and dedication that has gone into our operation to get us to this point is critical to embrace as me make our next decision.” I guess the true meaning of that statement never really hit me until we started talking about growth and expansion. I think this is ever so true at RAAA. Presently we are experiencing growth and expansion in every aspect of our breed. Ranches are expanding to accommodate more Red Angus calves. The Red Angus membership is growing at an unprecedented scale. Marketing programs are at an all-time-high enrollment rate. Everything we look at shows a growth trend at Red Angus!

Allied Access In 2012, RAAA initiated a program called Allied Access to complement FCCP by assisting commercial ranches that capitalize on heterosis in their respective crossbreeding programs. Allied Access presents the same simple approach to age and source verification as FCCP but without the genetic restrictions for producers whose calves may be less than half Red Angus. We have seen a growth in enrollment in recent days. Here is yet another example where we have built on past thinking by our forefathers in our breed, and expanded the scope of our programs to meet the needs of our customers in the industry. 01234567

ALLIED ACCESS

A

Although my father-in-law reminds us of the past, he has always been a forward thinker – a visionary for the future while respecting history. I think this is exactly what the Red Angus marketing programs have done. We have envisioned 10-year goals for Red Angus through our Strategic Plan, made progress towards those objectives and innovated programs to assist our customers in reaching these milestones, all while honoring the leadership and vision of the founding members of this great breed. Red Angus has long been the leader in marketing in the beef industry because of this. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane to fully understand just how we have reached this leading position in marketing within the industry.

FCCP Starting in 1994, the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program was initiated to help commercial ranches add value to cattle as they navigate the supply chain. Members and staff wanted to find a way to increase value and recognition of the Red Angus breed in the commercial industry, all while adding money to the producer’s pocket.

Top Dollar Angus Let’s jump ahead to early 2016 when RAAA invested $ in an initial stock offering of Top Dollar Angus, Inc. Top Dollar Angus is a genetic-certification and valueadded-marketing company that assists producers with highgrowth, high-carcass-value Angus and Red Angus feeder calves. This investment brings faster rewards to cow-calf producers who purchase bulls with high-genomic merit and match those with good health management and nutrition programs. Once again, RAAA has expanded on our prior thinking in order to assist our producers. ®

I’m happy you took a moment to reflect on our history in the Red Angus marketing programs. It’s always nice to take a step back and look at the ideas that earlier leadership at RAAA have made in order to get us to this point in the beef industry. We have made excellent decisions over the years to expand the critical mass of this great breed and assist producers in marketing their cattle.

Member Services Update Many producers are preparing for various deadlines over the next few months. These deadlines could be reporting birth, weaning and yearling data which all impact sale catalog printing dates as well as sale day. Then after sale day, animals should be transferred within 60 days. With the planning in process to collect and report this data, let us help you.

If you know roughly when data will be collected or that a transfer will occur, set up a reservation number to obtain a rough completion date. This process allows for you to gain a place in line, while you make preparations to fully submit all data. This process is very similar to making a table reservation at a restaurant.

Under the Herd Management Tab 1. Create a group or select a default group of animals you are interested in. 2. My Reports – Highlight group and then select either SCDE Limited Version or SCDE/Pedgree. • SCDE Limited Version – Only has two generations of the pedigree included • SCDE/Pedgree – Has five generations of the pedigree included 3. Download into the .csv or Excel format to view all information. THR Fall Total Herd Reporting billing has been sent to those members that have a fall-calving herd.

Sale Catalog Data Extracts SCDEs are available for request, however there is an option within REDSPro to pull this information directly. To request from RAAA, send an email to SCDE@redangus.org with a list of animals’ registration numbers to be pulled. Also, if a template is needed, please denote the template type you would like, Template A or B, within the email. To view the step-bystep request process, visit redangus.org/scde. Please allow for three business for the SCDE to be returned. To pull information directly, follow these brief steps.

Significant DNA Updates and Reminders Are my animals listed as “on file?” Animals that have been requested for DNA testing must have a registration number submitted either at the time of submission for testing, or reported to the RAAA after the results have been returned to the member for the animal(s) to properly be reflected as such in the RAAA database as being on file. If you would like to have the animal reflect the testing completed, please add the registration number to the original results file sent, and send back to DNA@redangus.org for application of results to the RAAA database. This will become very important with the new bull requirement starting with the 2017 calf crop.

We have been partners with Zoetis since 2012, however a new process between Zoetis and RAAA has been implemented. This process now includes the evaluation and submission

of samples through the RAAA National Office. Samples were originally submitted directly to the Zoetis lab, but now samples will be required to be received at the RAAA, 4201 N I-35, Denton, TX 76207. This will allow for increased communication between the producer and RAAA regarding results and questions.

20 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2016

How to submit a “Reservation Request” 1) Submit “Reservation Request” in writing, either via email, mail or fax. 2) Provide an explanation of what is to be submitted: Registrations, Transfers, Weaning or Yearling Updates. Include the approximate number of head and an approximate date the data will be complete and submitted. Reservations are only taken up to six weeks in advance. Do not request a reservation for work that will be submitted more than six weeks later. 3) Send request to appropriate email address. Registrations, Weaning Updates or Yearling Updates: web.rrts@redangus.org Transfers: web.transfer@redangus.org 4) Once a reservation request has been received, a confirmation and “reservation job number” will be returned to you. Do not lose this number, as it is required to submit remaining data. If the reservation number is not included with the subsequent submission, a new job will be created and processed separately in date-received order. The reservation number is critical. 5) Once you have completed your animals’ updated information, return it to the correct email, (listed above) and in the subject line include “Reservation job #000000.” The submitted data will then be placed into the initial reservation file to be pulled in date-received order for processing. If you have any questions about what will be accepted for reservations, please contact the office for clarification.

With this change has come a slight difference in the appearance of the Zoetis order form. To access the new order form please use the link at redangus.org/genetics/dnatools/genetic-merit.

Please be aware that the order forms between the two labs are different, and the respective order form must be used to designate which lab is to be used. Payment of Tests Needed at Time of Submission Regardless of which lab is used, payment must be made at the time of submission for samples to be sent to their requested lab. Sending a check is the preferred method, however you can denote on the order form to call for credit card information. This does delay the submission process if payment is not received at the same time that the samples arrive.

GeneSeek has made a new product available. The product is called the uLD (Ultra-Low Density) test. This is very similar to the LD product, however it doesn’t include the two genetic defects, OS and MA. It will only include parentage and, of course, genomically enhanced EPDs. Due to the genetic defects not being included, the cost will be lower than the LD at $34/head. The GeneSeek Red Angus form has been updated to reflect this test along with a few other minor re-

Zoetis Genomic Testing Now Available Through RAAA Distribution agreement gives breeders access to enhanced genomic testing

Zoetis and the Red Angus Association of America recently announced a distribution agreement between the two organizations. Red Angus breeders are now able to order the Zoetis HD 50KTM and i50K™ genomic tests, as well as tests for parentage and genetic conditions for seedstock animals directly from the RAAA. The RAAA will process orders, execute billing and submit samples on behalf of breeders to Zoetis for genotyping. “We’re excited about the partnership with Zoetis and are looking forward to having them more involved in the Red Angus breed,” said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. “We want as many Red Angus cattle as possible to be genomically tested as to further grow our base population. This is good for all Red Angus breeders.” The agreement means a new process for Red Angus breeders to submit orders and

DNA samples for testing directly to the RAAA, as well as new billing procedures and a new order form.

progeny, daughter and carcass records contributing to its traditional EPDs. (Approximate progeny equivalents associated with accuracy of GE-EPDs powered by HD 50K based on verified pedigree and HD 50K information.)

“This partnership between RAAA and Zoetis is a collaboration for dependable member service, further advancement of Red Angus genetics, and ongoing opportunities for innovation in cattle breeding,” said Kent Andersen, Director of Genetics Technical Services, U.S. CattleEquine with Zoetis. “Zoetis is pleased to offer Red Angus breeders and commercial users of Red Angus genetics another means to get more dependable genomicenhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) for the complete range of traits to make more profitable selection, breeding and marketing decisions.” Red Angus breeders and their bull buyers can use GE-EPDs and parentage verification powered by i50K to help make more dependable breeding decisions involving young animals. This is especially beneficial for difficult, time-consuming and expensive-to-measure traits (i.e., direct and maternal calving ease, stayability, marbling). Early in life, more information about an animal’s genetic potential can be known than if that animal had 10 to 20

Knowing more, sooner, about an animal’s genetic potential helps breeders make selection, mating and marketing decisions with greater efficiency. Early on, breeders can more dependably know, for example, if animals should be selected to enter the breeding herd as replacement females, further developed and marketed as open or bred females, used as donor females in embryo transfer, or culled for feeding purposes. i50K also better guides decisions on whether bull calves should be performance tested and eventually sold as bulls for a variety of more clearly determined purposes, or castrated for feeding. Zoetis i50K for Red Angus is available now. To learn more about i50K and how it can be used to help improve the accuracy, scope and profitability of breeding decisions – as well as ordering – contact a Zoetis or RAAA representative or visit www.i50K.com. ■

JRA Update Tracking Red Angus EPDs in Action by Kacey Koester, JRA President Have you ever wondered how accurate EPDs are? Those small numbers on a piece of paper that we use to make selection decisions on our cowherds? The Junior Red Angus Association of America is very excited to start our new project, LiveWiRED – Tracking Red Angus EPDs in Action. Thanks to Penny, a purebred Gelbvieh cow, we have collected over 100 embryos sired by four different Red Angus bulls. Two bulls have sets of EPDs that lie on the high end of a bell curve (upper 25 percent). The other two bulls have sets of EPDs that fall on the low end of the bell curve (lower 25 percent). These embryos were implanted into recipient cows in mid-November and their progeny will be tracked from conception to harvest.

Over the lifetime of these calves, the JRA will be collecting data at various stages in their lives to determine the accuracy of the EPDs that are assigned to these calves. The JRA will be coordinating our national programs with events going on in the lives of the calves (calving, weaning, developing rations for the feedlot, etc.). We are very excited about this upcoming project and look forward to seeing the data and results this project unveils.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity! Follow Penny and her progeny through this unique and exciting project. Become a follower of her blog on epdsinaction.blogspot.com to keep up with the action! Young Stockman Program by Genna VanWye, JRA Director and First Vice President The JRA Young Stockman Program will be held in conjunction with the Red Angus events at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, Jan. 5 – 7. The schedule is designed to provide an educational opportunity for both exhibitors and non-exhibitors. This conference will create a hands-on experience for juniors who are interested in learning more about beef production while gaining stockman skills. Participants will also meet other Red Angus juniors, Board members and industry leaders from across the country.

This year, participants will take an indepth look at beef reproduction and good reproduction practices. They will have the opportunity to hear from industry leaders and engage in hands-on learning. At the conference, participants will dissect reproductive tracts, conduct a breeding soundness exam, design feed rations that enhance reproductive performance, load an AI gun, discuss EPDs and more. The program will include a trip to Genetics West, a company that provides specialty veterinary services. At Genetics West, participants will have the opportunity to see the cow flushed for the

Miles and Miles of Red Angus Add Profit to Texas Ranch by Lindsay G. Allen for American Red Angus Magazine

The renowned Texas swing band, Asleep at the Wheel, sings a song about seeing “miles and miles of Texas” and that phrase could easily describe the view at Bar 7R Ranch. Vast space, picturesque scenes and grassland with Red Angus cattle are found on this north central Texas ranch. With the Red River backing up to the ranch’s property and row crops leading the way to the ranch’s entrance, it’s easy to get lost in the miles and miles of open land and enjoy the room to roam. “The Pease River runs through my place. I need cows who can handle the river bottom and cover the terrain from the river back to the pasture, and Red Angus females do just that,” said Rusty Riddle, owner of Bar 7R Ranch in Vernon, Texas, and former Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association bareback rider. Red Angus Transition Riddle, who grew up on a dairy farm, began ranching in the mid-70s with Brahman-cross and F1 cattle, along with other commercial females. In the late 90s, he bought some crossbred females and the purchase included Red Angus bulls. After the first calving season with the red bulls, Riddle saw

the value and was attracted to the breed. “These calves did well and they adapted well, so I went and bought more Red Angus bulls. A few years later, I decided it was time to start the process of turning my herd into a Red Angus operation. We aren’t fully there yet, but we are close with only a few remnants of my original herd still in the pasture,” he explained, adding that Bar 7R uses only Red Angus bulls now. Bar 7R keeps retains their own replacement females each year. In addition to the 300 head of mama cows, the ranch will run 2,000 to 2,500 stocker calves each year, too.

Rusty Riddle, former PRCA bareback rider, owns and operates Bar 7R Ranch, along with his oldest son, Caine.

Miles and miles of Red Angus genetics cover the Bar 7R Ranch.

Miles and Miles of Red Angus Add Profit to Texas Ranch Tagging for Premiums In 2004, the ranch made another pivotal decision and that was to enroll in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program. The program is one of the commercial marketing services through the Red Angus Association of America and it assists not just with the marketing of the calves, but also in acquiring premiums. The FCCP is the beef industry's first genetic, source and age USDA process-verified program, originating two decades ago with over 2 million calves enrolled. Plus, enrollment is free – the only cost is the 99¢ panel tag or $3 panel-EID combo. The yellow FCCP ear tag verifies that the calf is at least 50 percent registered Red Angus bloodlines. The 2003 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy findings in the United States was a motivating factor in the initial purchase of FCCP tags for Bar 7R. Following the BSE findings, rules and regulations changed for beef producers, especially those who sell in an all-natural

buying, which the tags also provide. Buyers are looking for the yellow tags and they appreciate the FCCP certificate I hand over at the time of purchase,” Riddle noted. “Those who understand the meaning behind the tags are aggressive about seeking cattle wearing them.

The program requires cattle to be at least 50 percent Red Angus genetics. Riddle's calves are all sired by Red Angus bulls and qualify for the FCCP tag.

market, like the majority of Riddle’s calves are marketed. Because the tags prove source and age of the calves, they were an easy fit and allowed Riddle to continue selling his calves as all natural. “I have seen a premium every year, whether it’s feeder steers, replacement heifers or all natural. Breeders like to know the heritage of the females they are

Between the two calving seasons at Bar 7R, over 300 calves will receive the valuable yellow tag each year and go on to receive the marketing help and prices after weaning and backgrounding. “I think highly of this program – it’s why I have tagged my calves the last 12 years with the yellow tags,” said Riddle. FCCP-tagged cattle have exclusive access to two grids – Tyson Fresh Meats’ Choice+ Premium Red Angus Grid and Greater Omaha Packing’s G.O. Red Grid. These grids are prime examples of the partnership between the RAAA and the packers that result in helping producers get the most for their genetically superior cattle.

Miles and Miles of Red Angus Add Profit to Texas Ranch n’t take long for me to learn that Red Angus fit the mold and have the traits that buyers are looking for,” he said, “These cattle provide the carcass value the packers are looking for; they grade well with lots going Choice and Prime, and their carcass is the right size.”

Through the use of the FCCP tags, producers and feeders have the opportunity to market their calves through either grid. Looking out at the pastures of cattle at Bar 7R Ranch, one will find a sea of red cattle with yellow tags. “The RAAA does a great job of promoting FCCP and educating buyers, but I also think it is my responsibility to advocate for and make people aware of the program,” Riddle continued, “If buyers don’t know what the yellow tags mean, then I can’t expect a premium.”

Riddle says that those aware of the FCCP tags are aggressive about buying cattle with the yellow tags.

Riddle noted that for the buyers who are aware of the FCCP, their desire to purchase calves with yellow tags is high. Once others learn about the program and its benefits, they are attracted to FCCPtagged Red Angus calves that are tagged and become repeat customers.

tion associated with the tags. “It’s another market for us and one we hope to dip into soon. We have full confidence we can, because of our FCCP tags,” said Riddle, who sells all his calves private treaty.

Looking forward, Riddle knows the tags provide value in an international market because of the verification and informa-

Being in the stocker cattle business has led Riddle to shy away from the Brahman-cross calves he used to raise. “It did-

The ranch sits on sandy soil next to the Pease and Red Rivers, so the Bermuda grass thrives along with the wheat and coastal grass that the cattle graze. Mama cows at Bar 7R live on the forage, except when calving season nears. All calves are backgrounded after weaning and put on wheat pasture for three to six months, depending on conditions and cutting season. The ranch has two calving seasons, with the spring yielding the biggest crop. Those calves are weaned around 7 months of age, while the fall-born calves are weaned around 8 to 9 months of age due to ample forage at that time. “I really think this is an ideal time to wean them.

Miles and Miles of Red Angus Add Profit to Texas Ranch “The size of the calf is right for taking them into a stocker program, sending steers to the feedlot or breeding the females after taking them off wheat pasture. It works really well for any scenario, said Riddle, who aims to wean calves that are 50 percent of the mother’s body weight. The Red Angus business is becoming a family business with his oldest son, Caine, working full time on the ranch and Riddle’s daughter and her husband have

began buying their own Red Angus cattle for their Weatherford, Oklahoma, property. Rodeo Tradition But the cattle business isn’t the only thing that has been passed on in the Riddle family. Rodeo has been the way of life for both Rusty and his wife Dollie. They have passed that passion to the next two generations of Riddles. Dollie is the daughter of a rodeo stock contractor and used to trick ride. “I saw her riding on a Paint horse at a rodeo and knew I had to meet her, Riddle recalled. Their daughter had a career in trick riding and now their 10year-old granddaughter has picked up the sport too.

Riddle was a professional bareback rider in the 1970s and the rodeo way of life has been passed down to his children and their children.

“I was working for a stock contractor and started riding some horses at his place. One thing led to another and a few years later I was at the NFR, he said of his rodeo career start. Their oldest son, Caine, is also competing in bareback riding and chasing NFR dreams like his father.

Riddle is best known for his bareback riding days, where he competed in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for eight consecutive years from 1972 to 1979, and finished second in the world for four consecutive years. He was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2009, as well.

Red Angus genetics have found a home on this ranch and Riddle is just fine seeing miles and miles of red when he looks at his cowherd, and the positive impact to the bottom line that their yellow tags garner. â–

Red Angus DNA Scores Align with Carcass Results

Producers frequently ask if DNA scores are truly predictive of phenotypic results. The table below presents a recent example in which IgenityÂŽ DNA scores accurately predicted carcass weight, marbling score and overall carcass value in a group of highpercentage Red Angus steers harvested earlier this year. The cattle were raised and owned by Bob and Elaine Yackley of Onida, South Dakota, and fed at a custom feed yard. A total of 91 head of 2015-born steers comprised the group that was DNA tested with Igenity Silver and followed through harvest to obtain carcass data on each individual animal. Next, the top 25 head with the highest DNA scores for Average Daily Gain (ADG) and marbling were compared to the bottom 25 head which exhibited the lowest combined DNA scores for the same two traits. Summarized results for the two groups are shown in the table at right.

*Scale is 1 to 10, with higher scores being more favorable.

This comparative analysis reveals that the top-DNA-scoring steers produced heavier carcass weights as a result of faster rates of gain (21-pound advantage). They also had higher average marbling scores and higher quality grades, with notably more upper-two-thirds Choice grade carcasses. Even in a softened fed-cattle market, the difference in value between the two groups was $50.60 per head favoring the high-DNA-scoring steers. Weight and marbling make a big difference when selling cattle on a grid. “These cattle had the right combinations of genetics and management in addition to being fed to the correct endpoint, explained Gary Fike, RAAA director of commercial marketing. “The fact that out of the 50 head in this comparison, there was only one Yield Grade 4 in the low-DNA group and none among the top-DNA steers, is a testament to that.

Fike, who organized and conducted the field study, further noted that these results demonstrate how DNA can be successfully used in commercial operations. “This is real-world data,â€? he said. “By using DNA testing and eliminating low-scoring animals for the traits of interest, producers can be confident they are building superior genetic value into their herds. That is why we recommend testing all replacement heifer candidates and culling low-scoring females before breeding.â€? â–

RAFI ‘Plants Trees’ for the Future by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator

Consider the Chinese proverb, “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.” While the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. is not in the business of growing trees, its sole focus is to ensure a solid ‘root structure’ for the Red Angus breed and provide security and ‘shade’ for future generations of stakeholders. RAFI’s mission is “to provide support that enhances the Red Angus breed and its stakeholders through investments in leadership development, scientific research and educational opportunities.” Since its inception in 2010, RAFI is fulfilling its mission to enhance the Red Angus breed’s position within the beef industry, securing long-term sustainable growth. The Foundation’s goal is to develop tomorrow’s industry leaders, harness the best peer-reviewed science and technology, and seek opportunities to improve education and communication within the Red Angus community.

The Gardeners and Their Tools RAFI is overseen by a Board of Directors. For more information, please visit redangusfoundation.org. Steve Newberry, President, Montana Judy Kay Ferguson, Vice President, Texas Esther Fischer, Secretary, Montana Ryan Ludvigson, Director, Montana Larry Daniel, Director, Georgia Raymond Prescott, Director, South Carolina Frank Wedel, Director, Kansas Tom Brink, RAAA Representative RAFI supporters may contribute in many ways: Cash Gifts When sending a cash contribution to RAFI, please include a short note designating either the Junior, Sal Forbes Research and Development or General Fund. Memorial or Honor Gifts Gifts may be given in memory of or to honor a special person. Recognition of the gift (no amount disclosed) will be sent to the family or person notifying them of the gift. A form to establish a memorial or honor gift can be found at redangusfoundation.org.

The Seedling In 2010, the RAFI Board met at the National Red Angus Convention in Springfield, Missouri, and established fundraising goals. Red Angus believers showed their faith int he breed by generously donating auction items, aggressively bidding on those items and pledging additional financial gifts. At the conclusion of the Springfield Convention, RAFI had raised a respectable amount of funds. Over the years, RAFI fundraising initiatives included the Tim Cox print, Where Change Comes Slowly, and the coffee table photo book, Red Angus Trails.

Establish a Scholarship A scholarship provides donors an opportunity to permanently leave their own Red Angus legacy, or honor or pay tribute to a Red Angus mentor or fellow esteemed Red Angus breeder.

Matching Gifts Many employers will match gifts to foundations for education or research. Contact the human resources department of your company to find out if your employer has a matching program and how to participate. Planned Gifting A "planned gift" is a major gift, given in lifelong form or in death, that is a part of financial or estate planning. Visit with your financial advisor or attorney to help you decide the best path to follow when making a decision on planned giving to benefit RAFI and the donor.

Will/Living Trust – Include a bequest provision in your will or revocable trust. You control the property funding the bequest during your lifetime. At your death, RAFI receives the bequest you specified.

Securities – Securities may be a part of the planned-giving process depending on the donor’s wishes and financial objectives. A popular benefit of such a gift beyond the

charitable income tax deduction is the avoidance of capital gains tax on the appreciation. Real Estate/Real Property – Real estate and real property may be donated to RAFI. Items include farm or ranch, vacation homes, cash, art, copyrights, antiques, stock, jewelry or any item that has a determined value.

Donated Auction Items Supporters may also contribute to RAFI by donating auction items or opportunities such as pick-of-the-herd. Please contact any RAFI Director to express your donation intentions. RAFI appreciates all contributions – large and small. If you would like a RAFI representative to contact you to visit about gifting options, please email info@redangusfoundation.org. Contributors may send a check or utilize Visa, MasterCard or Discover options. Please make checks payable to: Red Angus Foundation, Inc. 4201 N. Interstate 35 Denton, TX 76207

RAFI ‘Plants Trees’ for the Future Stakeholders have bid on various special-edition rifles, statues, paintings and commemorative items, and attended special RAFI dinners at conventions. The walls of the Board room at the Red Angus Association of America corporate office in Denton, Texas, sport the brands of Red Angus breeders who paid for the right to burn their livestock mark and legacy into the wood. Red Angus cattle have also played a role in endowing RAFI. At the 60th National Red Angus Convention in Lewistown, Montana, in 2013, organizers solicited six breeders to each donate one heifer calf, then sold limited raffle tickets to supporters. The goal for the “6 for 60” campaign was to raise $60,000. At the 2016 Convention in Oklahoma City, Bieber Red Angus of Leola, South Dakota, donated pick of their bred heifers with funds designated for the Sal Forbes Research and Development Fund. Following spirited and active bidding, Gifford Leu, a commercial rancher from Sutherland, Nebraska, won the final bid at $43,000. Additional donated auction items bolstered the event’s efforts to over $51,000. The Branches RAFI was organized under IRS code 501(c)(3), and therefore can receive tax-deductible contributions. RAFI is comprised of

54 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2016

three separate branches – or funds – and contributors may specify which they wish to support. The Junior Fund is a restricted fund, disbursements from which must support the Junior Red Angus Association of America’s annual budget and other approved Red Angus youth activities. The “Sal Forbes” Research and Development Fund is a restricted fund designated to assist with scientific research. Named for the RAAA’s first executive secretary and founding member, Sal Forbes, this fund grew out of donations to honor Mrs. Forbes as both the first Red Angus breeder and first woman in the livestock industry to have her portrait hung in the Saddle and Sirloin Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky. The General Fund is non-restricted. Disbursements may be used for any purpose that the RAFI Board of Directors deems important in advancing the Red Angus breed. Sapling’s Shade The generosity of many during these early fundraising efforts has afforded RAFI the opportunity to disperse funds through scholarships, leadership training and research grants. Annually, a sum of $5,500 in college scholarships is awarded

RAFI ‘Plants Trees’ for the Future to six of Red Angus’ brightest and most-talented juniors. The JRA also promotes leadership development through events such as Round-Up, Loaded 4 Leadership, Young Stockman Program and regional gatherings. As defined in RAFI’s mission statement, scientific research aimed towards advancing Red Angus’ position in the beef industry is a high priority. To date, RAFI has partially funded four unique research projects: • Next Generation Red Angus Fertility Evaluation – Colorado State University • Development of Novel Hoof, Foot and Leg Structure EPD in Red Angus Cattle – Kansas State University • Novel Methods of Genomic Predictions Using Haplotype Information ¬– University of Lincoln-Nebraska • Environmental Adaptability of Red Versus Black Hair Coat in the Southeast – Mississippi State University This fall, RAFI issued a call for new research proposals. Funding for these research opportunities is made possible through the Sal Forbes Research and Development Fund. RAFI personnel will evaluate submitted applications based on the project’s potential to improve RAAA’s ability to accurately describe the genetic merit of Red Angus cattle. The traits of primary interest are environmental adaptability, feedlot performance and cowherd-building traits.

Sunshine and Water As with trees, RAFI must be cared for – pruned, fertilized and watered – to promote growth and a healthy root structure. “The responsibility to foster and nurture RAFI belongs to all of us,” said Judy Kay Ferguson, RAFI vice president, of Lewisville, Texas. “Through financial stewardship, gifting and contributions, RAFI will continue to grow, flourish and give back to all Red Angus stakeholders for generations to come.” As 2016 concludes, Ferguson encouraged year-end giving, and reminded stakeholders that there are many ways to support RAFI. “Please consider a tax-deductible gift to RAFI this December as a cash donation or memorial. It’s also a perfect time to consider setting up planned giving, benefiting our great Red Angus breed’s future through research and development, and its budding leadership in our juniors.” Another Chinese proverb fittingly encourages action today to benefit the forthcoming generations. “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” Consider ‘planting trees’ for future generations of Red Angus stakeholders through contributions to RAFI. ■

Fetal Programming Defines Calf’s Lifetime Health by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

Great character is developed during times of adversity. For most producers, the current markets are adverse enough to build plenty of fortitude. With input costs remaining steady and calf prices lower than recent years, cattlemen are re-evaluating the economics of their operation to reduce volatility. The current challenges facing the cattle industry beg for a guarantee that each female will throw a fast-growing, healthy calf. Fetal programming will help insure calves start out vigorous and maintain that well-being throughout their lifetime. The idea of fetal programming is nothing foreign to veteran producers. It is the concept that the developing fetuses are influenced by maternal stimulus – or insult. The research behind fetal programming was originally introduced by the Southampton University’s David Barker who studied human birth records across several countries and took into consideration maternal stress, nutrition and the impact on their offspring from infant to adulthood. While not as well researched as it pertains to the cattle industry, experts are now digging into the fetal programming phenomenon and are discovering better ways to ensure the birth of healthy calves that will grow into healthy beef animals. Significance of Nutrition “The thing about fetal programming is that we know the impact of the environment of the fetus as it is growing can make a big impact on a calf after it is born,” explained Cliff Lamb, beef cattle specialist at the University of Florida. According to Lamb, fetal programming represents common-sense ideas and management practices that most producers have taken into account for a long time – primarily good nutrition. He went on to explain that the last trimester of livestock pregnancy is the best researched thus far. Researchers have deduced that good nutrition to the mother cow in the last months of fetal development is pivotal. “If the fetus has been exposed to nutrient restriction during the middle third of gestation, there is a reduction in muscle fiber and muscle mass. If a cow is restricted from some of the major nutrients like energy and protein, then the calf will have less muscle and reduced fiber when he is born,” said Lamb.

60 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2016

“If animals are restricted from nutrients in the last third of gestation, there is a decrease in fat disposition, which eventually can result in reduced marbling,” he said. He went on to explain that bred cows restricted from energy and protein in the last third of gestation will often have lower birth-weight calves which will likely lead to lower weaning and yearling weights - a mistake that should be easily avoidable. The University of Nebraska has also delved into the topic of fetal programming. Rick Funston, an expert on beef cattle reproductive physiology, headed up a series of research projects on bred cattle. In one study researchers grazed a group of cows on native range during their second trimester of pregnancy and another group on improved pasture during the same period. For the third trimester both groups of cows were turned out on native range. Calves from the improved-pasture group averaged 50 pounds heavier at finishing, exhibited higher marbling scores and produced more tender meat. This difference was likely caused by more muscle fibers and fat cells as a result of their improved pasture during the second trimester. The University of Nebraska also compared two groups of cattle in their third trimester. One group was given energy and protein supplements while the other had none. The calves from the supplemented group averaged 31 pounds heavier at finishing than offspring of the non-supplemented cows. Although the majority of research about fetal programming in cattle has primarily focused on the third-trimester, NuTech Bioscience’s Chris Schuetze said it is imperative to have good nutrition for the entire life of your animal. “Fetal programming really starts at conception,” he said. “You have to have the cells in as healthy a state as you can. Trace minerals are important at the cellular level. That animal is growing at all nine months – not just the last three.”

Fetal Programming Defines Calf’s Lifetime Health In his opinion, trace minerals like copper, magnesium and zinc have been misunderstood by producers for too long. Schuetze said that the easiest thing we can do for the betterment of our cattle is to provide trace minerals. “The problem is that it’s the easiest thing to neglect because we know animals will survive without them,” he said. We aren’t in this to have animals just survive. We want them to be productive at the highest possible level so we need to make sure we feed them right.” Schuetze concluded, “Minerals are the foundation of this whole thing.” He admitted that trace minerals are far from simple to understand and recommends producers thoroughly research their differences and advancements. Environmental Stress While nutrition is the common denominator in good fetal health, it isn’t the only variable to consider concerning embryonic strength and fortitude. Stress on cattle in any stage of gestation can negatively affect their calves. When under stress females release stress-related hormones that change the uterine environment in which the embryo is developing. Embryos are most heavily influenced by the stress of their mothers early on in gestation, between days 5 through 42.

62 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2016

Although stress from trailering cows to another location or shipping them long distances is very impactful, cattlemen must also keep in mind excessive heat can also negatively affect fetus. Mississippi State University is currently researching environmental adaptability of red-hided versus black-hided cattle. Through GPS collars, the researchers track cattle movement and behavior – such as grazing, cooling off in a pond and utilizing shade. Since heat stress can be attributed to early embryonic loss, the next phase of research will also include monitoring internal body temperature differences. Shade sources and quality water supplies are always good stockmanship practices so cattle can naturally reduce heat stress during hot summer days. Likewise, colder weather demands more energy from cows in order to keep them – and the calf they are carrying – healthy. With a correct nutritional panel, cold weather should be uneventful for bred cows. The agriculture industry is one of the most innovative industries world-wide. Understanding the impact of fetal programming, and putting research to practical use are ways producers can ensure a bright future for their operation and America’s beef industry as a whole. ■

“Cattle Business Weekly” recently announced its 2016 class of the Top 10 Industry Leaders Under the Age of 40. Each year the publication chooses individuals who lead by example through their successes in the agriculture industry. This year, two Red Angus breeders made the cut.

Jesse Crump Jesse Crump of Arvada, Wyoming, along with his wife Charity and five children (David, 10; Carter, 9; Titus, 6; and twins Willow and Echo, 5), own Crump Red Angus. The ranch is located in the dry, rough Powder River breaks of northeastern Wyoming.

He grows hay, winter wheat, is experimenting in cover crops, and has implemented pasture health practices, but still 75 percent of the hay and all other feed resources are hauled in. The management decisions and lack of feed the environment forces on the Crumps is hands down their biggest challenge. “I will never overcome it – I just try to stay one step ahead of it,” Crump said. “We describe our rangeland as a cattle-culling environment. The very rough, up-and-down terrain weeds out any structural issues in a hurry. It is also relentless on fleshing ability. At a stocking rate of 30 acres per animal unit, we have to demand top performance from every cow; we cannot afford any slackers.”

Crump keeps close track of animal performance and likes to see every cow wean 50 percent of her body weight. Raising a calf proportionate to her body weight combined with her ability to breed up in a 45-day-breeding window while maintaining an acceptable body condition score sets a pretty high standard for Crump cattle. Crump is proving the Red Angus breed can live up to those expectations. He is a registered Red Angus seedstock operator today, but Crump grew up in a grass yearling stocker environment. It was there that he bore witness to all types of genetic influences in cattle. “We experienced influence from just about every Angus cross imaginable. The Red Angus-influenced cattle excelled in our environment and their dispositions were second to none,” Crump said. “Our bulls are developed in a 40-acre pasture on a slanted hillside that requires them to continue the ‘uphill to water, downhill to feed’ rhythm they’ve grown up with. Our bulls are developed to the point that the carcass and growth measurements have merit but they are hard and ready to go to work. They have natural thickness and are not feedlot finished. Bulls that are lasting five and six years are protecting our customers’ bottom line. We are very proud of that.”

Member News Crump concluded, “Grandpa and Dad taught me that customer service has to be your top priority no matter what industry you are in. Without your customers, you are nothing.” Jesse and Michelle Weber Jesse and Michelle Weber run Weber Land & Cattle, near Lake Benton, Minnesota. The couple has three children – Wacey, 4; Reese, 18 months; and Andi, 5 months.

Their passion for raising cattle drives the couple, both graduates of South Dakota State University. “I do it for my kids. I want to be able to give them something down the road,” said Jesse.

To build his herd over the years, Jesse purchased Red Angus genetics from surrounding states. One of the first cows he bought had a heifer calf he named Dolly, who raised two bull calves that won Denver. Dolly lived to be 15 years old. The Webers host two sales. Their heifer sale, “Ladies in Red,” is in conjunction with two partners in late November. They are also part of the “Red Connection” bull sale located in South Dakota in March. Michelle started working for Jesse and his dad five years ago after leaving her graphic design job. As her own art business has grown – and three children later – her day-to-day involvement with the ranch has changed.

Jesse bought his first Red Angus heifer calf at the age of 12. In the back of his mind, he wanted to grow into a seedstock operation. His neighbors ran Red Angus and he had seen positive things about the cattle.

Today, she coordinates sale catalogs, updates the website and maintains a social media presence. She has quickly built her cattle-based painting business. She said social media, and more importantly, her cattle industry connections, have advanced her career.

“Now, there wouldn’t be any other breed I’d want to be in,” he said. He likes how they are a dual-purpose breed, with good attributes like maternal and calving-ease traits, along with being functional and low input.

On numerous occasions, she has helped ag organizations raise funds through the auctioning off of her paintings. “It’s been a crazy adventure for the last five years,” she said. The Webers are grateful to other cattlemen.

The people behind the operation are just as important as the quality of the cattle,” said Jesse. The Webers say their success comes from the quality of their cattle, but also from the support of their families. Both of their families have been supportive of what they are trying to build – a future for themselves and their children. “We’ve made it our life. It’s the first thing I think about when I wake up and the last thing when I go to sleep. I think about how we can grow the operation and how I can put food on the table,” he said.

Minnesota Beef Expo

The 16th Annual Minnesota Beef Expo, held Oct. 20 – 23, in St. Paul, Minnesota, brought together cattle producers and youth livestock exhibitors to celebrate and promote the beef industry. The four-day event is the largest all-beef show in Minnesota and includes youth contests, cattle sales, a trade show, educational seminars and an 860-head junior show. Exhibitors and attendees hailed from all over the Upper Midwest. In 2016, more than 700 youth exhibitors competed in the weekend’s junior events. Plus, some of region’s best seedstock producers sold cattle and embryos at three sales during the weekend. One of the most unique aspects of the Minnesota Beef Expo is the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program. Eleven heifers were presented to lucky youth who went through an intensive application process. Each winner is responsible for raising, breeding and maintaining complete records on care of the animal, while providing monthly progress reports to the original owner and the Minnesota Beef Expo. The breeders who donated heifers will also serve as mentors to the respective winners. Katilin Geyer of Lisbon, North Dakota, received the Red Angus heifer sponsored by the AgStar Fund For Rural America and is mentored by Steve Pomerenke of AgStar Financial Services. Judges Dan Harker and Barry Wesner, both of Indiana, sorted through an impressive 858 head on Sunday’s Junior Show. Supreme Champion Heifer honors went to Sydney Zehnder of Stanchfield, Minnesota, with her Red Angus female, WDZ Girl Power 5028. n 66 American Red Angus Magazine n December 2016
