Reproduction and Breeding In Cattle Females It is of great interest to the beef cattle industry to purchase, breed, raise and produce sound females. Remember, she is a calf factory. We want cows to have a long productive life for our operations and our customers. Some important structural traits – sound udders and teats, correct body conformation and sound feet and legs – can be selected for or against successfully through phenotype selection and culling. This is due to the fairly high heritability of these traits. However, most reproductive traits such as calving interval, calf survival etc., are low in heritability making them more difficult to select for.
Commercial operations can benefit from reproductive performance by practicing heterosis through crossbreeding. It is a pretty good rule of thumb that what is difficult to achieve through selection might more easily be achieved through heterosis. Seedstock producers, however, do not have this luxury since they produce purebred animals. Therefore, these producers rely on a thorough exam of EPDs (including enhanced EPDs via DNA testing), phenotype and their own good judgement when making selection, mating and culling decisions.
Breeding A solid seedstock or commercial breeding program – with a clear end goal in mind and a timeline of small attainable steps toward a particular trait – has proven to be a helpful strategy for my operation in making genetic improvements. Many livestock producers and respected academia agree that chasing a desired trait too far is detrimental to that trait and related traits.
For example, if I were to select for only high calving ease and low birth weight EPDs in my replacement females and herd sires, I will achieve a positive outcome of easy-calving cattle. However, if I don’t pay close attention to weaning and yearling weights along with other EPDs, over time
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2018
my calves will lack the growth potential needed to meet the demands of the market, hence a negative outcome. The result of chasing calving ease too far results in adverse effects on growth traits. Reproduction Keeping precise, accurate records allows breeders to measure what they produce and bring to light improvements they need to make. Therefore, it is important that we identify exposed females that fail to breed on their first or second cycles and use this criteria for culling.
Generally, if a cow conceives and carries her calf to term her first and second year of breeding, the probability of her remaining productive in the herd is greater. But if she does not conceive, her future productivity is questionable. Our records also will help determine which cows consistently breed early, in the middle or late in the breeding season, and therefore calve accordingly. Often our late-middle to late breeders will breed later every year. This indicates reproductive inefficiencies that should not be propagated and these cattle should be considered for culling. This process should increase our reproductive efficiency and improve maternal and Stayability EPDs. Another important and easily monitored trait is body condition score. Females going into breeding season with a BCS of 5 or 6 and whose nutritional needs are met and maintained throughout gestation and calving are more likely to provide good quality colostrum and nutrition for their calves. They will also breed back more successfully. I challenge you to build a strong, productive, long-lasting factory on a sound foundation – the cow. Then analyze the factory’s function and the quality and performance of her product – the calf. Finally, measure quality control and customer satisfaction. ■

Red Angus Continues Reign as Industry’s Most-Favored Female
Listen closely to what the cattle market is saying and this is what you’ll hear, “Red Angus females are more highly favored than any other beef breed!” Sale prices for Red Angus heifers topped all other breeds and breed crosses again during 2017, extending a multi-year run that has the attention of profit-minded cattle producers from across the nation. Why do Red Angus heifers consistently top the market? There are multiple reasons to cite, but stated simply, it is because they make excellent stock cows. Ranchers and farmers increasingly recognize that fact and are therefore willing to pay premium prices to own Red Angus females. We all know that valuable females hold their flesh, breed back on schedule and raise a highly marketable calf year after year. That’s what commercial producers demand and that’s how Red Angus females perform in a wide range of geographies and environments.
Many producers report their Red Angus heifers selling at steer equivalent prices, which is a tremendous advantage because, for most breeds, heifers bring $8 to $12 per cwt below same-weight steers. Speaking of steers, the same K-State analysis pegged Red Angus-sired steers very near the top of the market, and it also showed that FCCP-tagged Red Angus feeder calves have a $2.80 per cwt advantage over Red Angus-sired feeders that do not carry the well-recognized yellow tag in their ear.
One more interesting fact is that the number of total Red Angus lots sold in Superior Livestock sales climbed higher from 320 in 2010 to 494 in 2017 (a 54 percent increase). Red Angus breed growth and premium price performance is plainly evident in Superior Livestock data, and we thank Gary Fike, RAAA Director of Marketing, and K-State for their work in bringing to light numerous important trends that help producers capture extra dollars on sale day. Additionally, thanks to Superior LiveThe latest analysis of Superior Livestock stock for allowing their database to be Video sale data conducted by Kansas used in such a constructive manner to State University once again confirms benefit beef producers. that the Red Angus heifer premium is for real. While prices on other breeds From a vaccination and herd health peraveraged $164.75 per cwt during the full spective, VAC 34 and VAC 34+ treated evaluation period (2010 to 2017), Red calves earned premiums of $2.64 per Angus-sired females sold for $171.55 cwt, while VAC 45 and VAC 45+ calves per cwt. That differential amounts to a beat the average price by $7.48 per cwt. $41-per-head advantage on a 600-pound Only 25 percent of the calf lots sold heifer. Vaccination, Verification and Programs Elevate Calf Merit
Top Dollar Angus continues to grow and is documented to add value to cattle in multiple auction settings. Turnout might be the right time to begin the process of enrolling your herd. Kenny Stauffer, general manager of Top Dollar Angus, is available to explain the benefits and begin the enrollment process.
I hope the adage, “April showers bring May flowers, is holding true in your area. Rain or shine, April always proves to be a busy month for cattle producers. As you begin the physical work of vaccinations, branding and pasture turnout, start focusing on developing a marketing plan for the calves you are working.
The Premium Red Baldy program recognizes genetically verified heifers packed with heterosis. If your calf crop includes heifers that are 25 to 75 percent Red Angus x Hereford, this tagging program is a value-added system to consider. Tags can be ordered and genetics verified by calling 940-387-3502, Ext. 2.
Spring branding and turnout are great times to begin the processes that will add value to your calf crop. Nearly all of the Red Angus commercial marketing programs can begin during this period. Branding is opportune to apply the Feeder Calf Certification Program’s yellow dangle tag or the Allied Access green dangle tag. GENERATIONS. That’s why you need LONGRANGE for up to 150 days of parasite control.1 Bloodlines. You’re as proud of yours as you are of theirs. But if you used a short-term dewormer like CYDECTIN® (moxidectin) or DECTOMAX® (doramectin), you may not have been doing your genetics justice. That’s because your cows and heifers were probably reinfected with parasites just halfway through the grazing season – right when they need to gain weight to breed back and give milk.
Only LONGRANGE delivers true season-long control.1
25.4 lbs.
LONGRANGE heifers gained 25.4 lbs. more on average over those treated with DECTOMAX.2
Out here, there is no time for shortcuts. This year, think LONGRANGE.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extendedrelease anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. Red Angus Calves Boost Integrity Beef Alliance by Gary D. Fike, RAAA Director of Commercial Marketing
Integrity Beef Alliance, a complete cattle production system with a successful calfmarketing program, directed by the Noble Research Institute of Ardmore, Oklahoma, is now accepting Red Angussired calves. Integrity Beef has, in the past, only allowed Angus and Charolais genetics to be enrolled, however, this acceptance of Red Angus-sired calves is an example of a progressive beef industry program recognizing the value of Red Angus genetics. The mission of the Integrity Beef Alliance, which is governed by a board of cow-calf producers, is to enable members to responsibly and profitably produce uniform, high-quality, pre-conditioned cattle, which exceed customer expectations. Additionally, the Alliance strives to provide marketing channels for its members.
Robert Wells, Ph.D., coordinator of Integrity Beef Alliance, said, “Red Angus calves will make a great addition to the program and complement the Alliance very well. We look forward to a long and successful relationship with the Red Angus Association of America.”
the top 20 percent for both the weaning weight and the yearling weight EPDs for their respective breeds. In addition to these requirements, heifers must have been sired by bulls in the top 20 percent for calving ease direct to qualify for the replacement female market.
Integrity Beef has two program offerings: a track for terminal calves and a track for replacement females. The Alliance currently holds one calf sale in December at the Oklahoma City West Stockyards in El Reno, Oklahoma. However, Wells said that a greater number of calves are marketed through Superior Livestock Auction video, private treaty, direct to the feedlot or through other producers.
Once calves are qualified, a $1 enrollment fee and a $2 program tag charge will be incurred by producers that designates calves for the program.
To be eligible, calves in the terminal program must be sired by bulls that are in
Wells concluded, “Red Angus females have always been accepted in the program, now with the inclusion of the bull side of the equation, Red Angus commercial producers can receive recognition for the value-added traits built into the calves.” n

Red Angus Association of America Hires Director of Breed Improvement
The Red Angus Association of America is pleased to announce that Ryan Boldt of Ft. Collins, Colorado, has been hired as Director of Breed Improvement.
Boldt is a Ph.D. student in breeding and genetics at Colorado State University, where he also earned a Master of Science. His undergraduate education includes a Bachelor of Science in animal science from Texas Tech University and an associate degree from Colby Community College. Boldt was a member of the collegiate livestock judging teams at both Colby and Texas Tech. He was raised on a sheep operation near Longmont, Colorado, where he continues to be involved with his family. “I am honored to join the excellent staff at RAAA,” said Boldt. “I am truly humbled by the opportunity to
work for an organization that has focused on using sound scientific principles to genetically describe cattle since its inception. I look forward to working with the membership to provide tools that allow for the continued growth and interest in Red Angus genetics by the commercial cattleman.”
24 American Red Angus Magazine n April 2018
Tom Brink, RAAA CEO, said, “Ryan is a great addition to the Red Angus team. He has a tremendous background both on the practical side of livestock production and in the science of genetics. He has first-hand experience operating BOLT software, and was directly involved with Dr. Mark Enns in calculating a new Red Angus EPD for feed intake, as well as numerous other EPDs for quite a few different breeds. Ryan also has significant teaching experience and fits our group very well. We’re excited to have him working with us in the Commerce City office.” Boldt started in his new role at RAAA in early February, and will be part-time for several months before assuming his position on a full-time basis on June 1. He can be reached at ryan@redangus.org or (940) 387-3502, Ext. 12. n

Red Angus Releases EPDs on Two New Traits by Ryan Boldt, RAAA Director of Breed Improvement
RAAA's Core Policies direct the Association to create marketing tools for commercial bull buyers and to objectively describe Red Angus cattle utilizing sound scientific principles. Therefore, RAAA has developed two new EPDs to describe feeding traits. The new EPDs are Dry Matter Intake (DMI) and Average Daily Gain (ADG). Units for the DMI EPD are average pounds of dry matter feed intake per day, while the ADG EPD is expressed as pounds of daily gain during the post-weaning growth period. These new EPDs are designed to be used in tandem to help identify animals that are more feed efficient via a favorable combination of intake and gain. The RAAA plans to release the new EPDs on all animals in spring of 2018. The new DMI EPD is calculated using a multiple-trait model that includes DMI, On Test Average Daily Gain,
Post Weaning Average Daily Gain and Weaning Weight. Phenotypes have and will continue to be collected using feed intake records that measure an animal’s average daily intake for a minimum of 35 days following a warm-up period. A total of 4,742 feed-intake records have been collected and were used for the EPD calculation. The heritability estimate for DMI is moderate in magnitude at 0.36, which is higher than traits such as weaning and yearling weight. To more easily identify animals with favorable combinations of intake to gain, an ADG EPD will also be published. This will serve as a more intuitive measure of an animal’s growth rate from weaning to a year of age. The new ADG EPD will also be comparable to all animals that are members of the International Genetic Solutions multi-breed genetic evaluation in the same manner as the current RAAA growth and carcass trait EPDs. Both DMI and ADG EPDs were created to better equip Red Angus breeders and commercial producers with tools to enhance their ability to select cattle that will perform more efficiently while growing at desirable rates. n

RAAA and RAFI Board Members Join Together in Challenging Members by Patsy Krause, RAFI Fund Raiser
At their meetings held in Denver during the National Western Stock Show, RAAA and RAFI Board members joined together to raise over $15,000 and are now challenging you, the RAAA membership, to join them by contributing to RAFI in 2018! scribes two of RAFI's operational funds. The third is the RAFI general fund used for other projects and operations. Great things are happening in the Red Angus breed, and it's time to dig deep and lead by example by contributing to this RAFI matching effort.
"By matching the RAAA Board Members’ contributions, members can double their money and support the work of the Red Angus Foundation Inc. in a tremendously impactful way," said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. Brink personally made a $1,000 contribution to RAFI in late-2017 to get the ball rolling and Patsy Krause, RAFI Fund Raiser, added another $150 before approaching members of the leadership boards. “We initially challenged all RAAA and RAFI Board members to do what they could for the matching effort,” Brink told the two Boards during their January meetings. “It became our goal to raise $15,000 to $20,000 from our Red Angus leadership, and then challenge RAAA members to match that amount,” said Brink. “We believe the RAAA membership will follow the lead of the directors.” That is exactly what happened, with the two Boards combining their resources, sending in their checks and demonstrating the importance of supporting RAFI. To date, the Boards have raised $17,850!
Membership, Please Join Us The RAAA and RAFI Boards extend the challenge to the membership to match and exceed the donations raised by the directors. In the Board Commentary article in the January ARA Magazine, RAAA President Bob Morton references how Red Angus fits into the industry and discusses the future of the breed. In his words, “Our future looks awesome!” He went on to reference how we need to maintain a strong focus on producing the best genetics and keep the Red Angus breed growing. Who better to partner with than an organization dedicated to Red Angus research and development, and education and support of Junior Red Angus members? That perfectly de-
Bob Morton also quoted the old saying, “Getting to the top is easy – staying there is the hard part!” RAFI is established and poised to partner with RAAA and keep Red Angus moving forward. “The way to stay at the top is through perseverance, hard work and teamwork,” said Morton. Let's work together. Please mail your contribution to Red Angus Foundation Inc., 18335 E 103rd Ave., Suite 202, Commerce City, CO 80022. Feel free to contact Patsy Krause at patsy@redangus.org to learn more about how you can support RAFI. Individual amounts will be kept confidential, unless otherwise requested by the donor. Join Red Angus leaders by participating in this exciting challenge! Let's all support RAFI and make 2018 a banner year for Red Angus! n
Thank you to the following for their support of RAFI. Your commitment to RAFI and the Red Angus breed is truly appreciated! Nancy Bowling - JRA sponsorship Scott and Kim Ford - Board Challenge 34 American Red Angus Magazine n April 2018

The most exciting sire to surface in 2017, Fantastic earned headlines when he sold for $100,000 at the R.A. Brown Ranch March Bull Sale. He stands alone as the only Red Angus animal that has a “Fantastic” 15 CED (-7.8 BW) to 118 YW spread combined with his breed leading maternal and carcass traits. Plus he proved to be one of the most feed efficient animals we have ever tested. His maternal brother is the $36,000 Brown Oracle B112 who is proving to be a multi-trait breed leader for growth, carcass, and power. Their dam was the $26,000 high selling donor at the 2017 Front Pasture Female Sale and she too has an unmatchable EPD profile for all economically relevant traits including a 232 Herdbuilder Index and ranks in the top 1% of the breed in 5 traits.

Success on Display in Missouri With the Show-Me-Select Heifer Program by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications
Value-added programs are simple on the surface, extremely complex to plan and even more difficult to make successful. In the beef business, where margins fluctuate like the Midwestern weather, producers are constantly looking for that home run to push them to the next level of premiums. Perhaps one of the greatest opportunities for value-added success in the beef industry occurred in the early 1990s, after the country had experienced an influx of Continental/European genetics. This, in many cases, led to a remarkable change in breeding programs across the U.S. However, the way in which heifers were being developed during the postweaning to pre-breeding phase was not keeping pace with changes related to growth rate and resulting differences in age at puberty of the heifers themselves. This translated to heifers not being adequately developed to realize their reproductive potential. In fact, pregnancy rates at the end of the first breeding season were astoundingly low. Compounding the replacement heifer problem was the common occurrence of dystocia and lower-than-acceptable breed-back rates among 2-year-old cows.
Dr. David Patterson
Eldon Cole
Inception Enter Dr. David Patterson and a handful of progressive Kentucky cattle producers. This forward-thinking group came together and laid out a comprehensive plan that provided opportunities to assess and improve the region’s heifer development programs. Patterson’s graduate research at Kansas State University focused on nutritional development of heifers in relation to reproductive outcomes among differing breeds or biological types of beef cattle. Reproductive endpoints that he evaluated included
The Show-Me-Select Heifer program swept the state in 1997 and has grown, both in success and size, every year since.
38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2018
age at puberty, date at first conception, pregnancy rate at the end of the first breeding season, incidence and severity of dystocia and breed-back rates as 2-year-olds. He, in addition, evaluated the relationship between age at puberty and length of the postpartum interval following a heifer’s first calving. Using his background in heifer development and its relationship to reproductive outcomes, Patterson and the group of progressive cattlemen in central Kentucky drafted plans for what was to become known as The Bourbon County Elite Heifer Program. During this same timeframe, animal scientists at Colorado State University developed the reproductive-tract scoring system which utilizes pre-breeding exams to assess reproductive status of heifers prior to their first breeding season. Working together, Patterson and the producer group designed a program utilizing all available information related to heifer development and created benchmarks that enabled producers to evaluate the success – or perhaps failure – of their heifer selection and development programs on an individual animal basis. Patterson went on to explain that during this timeframe, the Beef Improvement Federation was successful in bringing beef producers together to improve beef herds, with emphasis on the sire side.

Success on Display in Missouri With the Show-Me-Select Heifer Program Using that mindset, Patterson explained that it wasn’t difficult for producers and Extension specialists to address the question of, “Now what can be done from the female side to support improvements in the beef industry?” This led to the establishment of requirements for service sires used in the program, naturally or artificially, which included BW or CE EPDs, to minimize the incidence and severity of dystocia. The Bourbon County Elite Heifer Program was not only successful in Kentucky, it served as the foundation for the currently thriving Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program in Missouri by giving producers the chance to market their heifers with more than just the generic description of “she’s a bred heifer.” The ShowMe-Select Heifer program swept the state in 1997 and has grown, both in success and size, every year since. Growth Patterson credits Eldon Cole and Al Kennett, livestock specialists with the University of Missouri Extension, as being instrumental to the early and continued success of the Show-MeSelect Replacement Heifer program. After the monumental success at the first two locations, new sales were added almost every year. Cole recalls the first sale held at the Joplin Regional Stockyards, which he coordinated in partnership with Patterson. At that inaugural event, more than 175 bred heifers averaged $864 per head. He adds that had those heifers been sold one year prior as feeder calves without the addedvalue aspect, they would have sold for roughly $300 per head which further solidified the advantage of a value-added program like Show-MeSelect. The top group from that inaugural sale – approximately 45 head – averaged $1,055 per heifer from Kleiboeker Farms in Wentworth, Mis-

souri, who still participate in the program today. Cole says that between 300 and 400 heifers are marketed each May and November through the Show-Me-Select program at the Joplin Regional Stockyards, topping out at 500 in recent years. He adds that after the inaugural sale in Joplin and a successful sale in the northeast Extension region, the program took off. Worth the Work While it’s tremendously satisfying to reflect on the success of the program, Patterson attests that early challenges were few, but significant. According to Patterson, many producers didn’t see the value in having a veterinarian visit their operation three times just to qualify a heifer for sale. He explains that the first few years were critical to getting the program off to a good start and that without the overwhelming success in the first two regions, the program probably wouldn’t have reached such astounding heights, or be as impactful as it is today.
40 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2018
Cole says that some people choose not to enroll in the program because they feel it is too much work, however he feels the results speak for themselves and dubs the Show-MeSelect Heifer program as one of the most highly successful programs in Missouri. Andy McCorkill, University of Missouri Extension Specialist, recalls his first experience with the Show-MeSelect program when he was in high school. “The success of those first Show-MeSelect sales was an eye opener to me and drove my interest in a career in livestock Extension. I joined the University of Missouri Extension in 2011 and have been working alongside Eldon Cole while promoting and planning the sales ever since.” From McCorkill’s point of view, the development of a strong relationship between the producer and veterinarian is one of the most valuable outcomes of the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program.
Success on Display in Missouri With the Show-Me-Select Heifer Program That, in addition to increased utilization of pre-breeding reproductive exams, estrous synchronization, artificial insemination, stringent requirements for service sires used to breed heifers enrolled in the program, and ultrasound technology for pregnancy diagnoses, fetal aging and sexing has greatly improved the quality of cattle in Missouri. McCorkill adds that there is still much room for growth across the state, in terms of both buyers and sellers. The Show-Me-Select team hopes to add more sales across the state and is focusing their efforts to reach underserved regions of Missouri, including the south central and northwest regions. The program is well-known but still needs to attract more participants – both sellers and buyers – to offer more robust sets of heifers at every sale. A significant piece of the Show-Me-Select process, and ultimately growth of the program, is the buy-in and collaboration of veterinarians. Producers and veterinarians must work together proactively in order for heifers to meet the qualifications of the Show-Me-Select program. Veterinarians must proactively evaluate potential heifers three times before the sale – the first visit serves as a pre-breeding exam including a tract score and pelvic measurement and evaluation for blemishes and conformation. The second visit is the first pregnancy check that takes place 90 days after timed AI, and the third visit is an additional pregnancy check within 30 days of the scheduled ShowMe-Select sale. It’s no stretch to say that without the cooperation and teamwork from veterinarians across the state, in addition to the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine, the program would be vastly underutilized. Progress The program has been so widely accepted and yielded such positive re-
sults that Patterson and his team of Extension supporters have expanded the program to include two more tiers to which heifers can qualify. Heifers that meet the aforementioned requirements qualify for the Show-MeSelect program at the minimum level. Heifers qualify as Tier Twos in the program that are sired by AI sires with high EPD accuracies for CED, CEM, WW, CW and Marb. Finally, heifers that are distinguished as Show-Me-Plus at the time of sale have been tested with a heifer genomic prediction panel approved by University of Missouri Extension’s Dr. Jared Decker. These include breed association GE-EPD, GeneMax Advantage, Maternal Edge, Red Navigator, Igenity Gold, Igenity Silver and Method Choice tests. University of Missouri Extension has dedicated more than $1.5 million to support implementation of the program and development of a database that tracks heifers and their individual performance. The database tracks a
wide range of reproductive and genetic parameters, including: reproductive tract score, pelvic area, estrous synchronization protocol, breeding strategy (natural service, heat detect and AI, or fixed-time AI), service sire and date of conception. This information is then reported back to producers for use in further improvement of their herds, which continues to advance the quality of heifers offered in Show-Me-Select program sales. One thing is for sure; even producers who don’t market their heifers through the Show-Me-Select program sales pay attention to the program and its results. Patterson attests that even producers who don’t participate or attempt to market their heifers are involving their veterinarian more proactively and are using pieces of the program to improve heifer development on their farms and ranches. That’s another big win for the program. As the adage goes, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” ■

Heifer Selection Through DNA and Top Dollar Angus Gains Revenue by Kenny Stauffer, Top Dollar Angus® General Manager
Most of you are preparing for your upcoming calving season or maybe you are right in the middle of the hustle and bustle. For many producers, this is the moment you’ve been waiting for. Did you select the good replacement heifers almost two years ago? If you are happy with your choices, you get to enjoy those females for the next 10 years. If you’re disappointed, that’s a different story. You have two choices – deal with them until they flunk out of your herd or dispose of them. Either decision will unfortunately will have a negative impact on your operation. Genetic decisions in beef production, unlike the hog and poultry industry, take a long time to see results. The decisions made now for the 2018 breeding season will not show its affect on your herd until 2022 when retained heifers wean their first calves. If a heifer has undesirable qualities in production, fertility, docility, structure, etc., you have lost four years of genetic improvement. She is a female with two years of development costs at a cull-cow value. How do we avoid this and select the right heifer the first time? With a simple DNA test, producers receive a complete profile of their commercial females at a very young age. This is a tool that is gaining popularity because it gives ranchers the same genetic advantages that an EPD gives a registered breeder. Why not know how that replacement heifer is going to perform long before you invest valuable dollars in development costs only to be disappointed with your selection results? Once you have a DNA profile on your heifers, you can select
accordingly, using a tool that brings you accuracy through science, not just phenotype. They may look good, but we have all selected those beautiful females that do not measure up in production. By selecting your lowest-DNA-scoring females in whatever trait you wish, you will have a very valuable set of feeders to market at a premium value. The remaining females are eligible for replacements and your genetic improvement has increased in the desired traits. Is DNA too expensive? If you think DNA is too expensive, consider the following scenarios. Scenario 1: What does a female cost the ranch when she falls out of production or gets culled due to nondesirable traits? You have development expense, below-average production, loss of genetic improvement and now a weighup salvage value. Whereas, if you would have sold her as a feeder or yearling heifer, you would have received a premium value. Scenario 2: What is the ranch’s lost revenue due to the lack of maximizing production potential because below-average females were selected or by not taking advantage of marketing options at opportune times for maximum returns. Producers should strive to qualify for and market with Top Dollar Angus, a genetic certification and marketing company that focuses on bringing premiums prices to qualified herds. In 2017, Top Dollar Angus closed out the

$ ®
year with an average premium of $32 per head. Do you still think a $25-per-heifer DNA test is too costly and not feasible? Let’s look at it on a per-head basis. If you have a total cow herd inventory of 200 head and you save 15 percent of your heifers each year for replacements, you will retain 30 heifers and market 170 calves. One way to qualify for Top Dollar Angus is through DNA. We require you to test 25 percent of your calf crop. In this scenario, you will be required to test 50 heifer calves for a total cost of $1,250. If your results come back and your calves rank in the top 25 percent, your herd is eligible for Top Dollar Angus. The 170 calves that you will market through Top Dollar Angus can bring an average premium of $32 a head – an added profit of $5,440. 170 head x $32 = $5,440 - $1,250 DNA fee = $4,190 net premium The DNA test cost your operation $6.25 per head to gain $20.95 per head ($1,250/200 hd = $6.25 Total Cost per/head or $4,190/200 hd = $20.95 Net Profit per/head) You now have included a valueadded premium program to your operation, and have the tools necessary to select an elite set of females that will genetically improve your herd. JRA Update
Round-Up
by Madison Adams, JRA Director The 2018 Red Angus Round-Up will be held in Arkansas with plans to visit a peach farm, the Tyson Discovery Center, University of Arkansas, the original Walmart, the Crystal Bridges Museum, and a fish hatchery. We also plan on visiting several Red Angus and beef operations. National contests will be conducted here as well as the 2018 National Junior Red Angus Member Meeting. This event will be held July 18 – 22 and registration closes May 1. Scholarships to assist in the cost of attendance include the Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship, Commercial Cattlemen’s Scholarship and Merit Award Program. Each of the applications for these scholarships are also due May 1. Round-Up is a program the Junior Red Angus Association offers that consists of gaining educational and industry
knowledge, touring cattle farms along with other agricultural related demonstrations, competitions and building relationships with other juniors and industry producers. Each day is filled with different stops and activities. Round-Up offers a Commercial Cattlemen’s scholarship targeted to two different people with a commercial background, not necessarily a JRA member. It is up to JRA and RAAA members to suggest potential candidates to be nominated for the Commercial Cattlemen’s Scholarship. Participant suggestions are requested by April 1 to provide time for individuals to complete an application for scholarship selection by May 1. To suggest someone or if you are interested in the scholarship, contact the Junior Programs Coordinator Kim Heller. For more information about Round-Up and scholarship opportunities, all information is posted at redangus.org/junior-red-angus.
Young Stockman’s Program a Success by Genna VanWye, JRA President
The 2018 JRA Young Stockman Program took place March 2 – 3 in Kansas City, Missouri. The event incorporated the LiveWiRED project calves, while maintaining an EPD, nutrition, health and cattle handling focus.
Friday evening, juniors received some background knowledge on EPDs, including how to read them and why they are used in the industry. Putting that knowledge to the test, juniors participated in a bull-buying activity that

involved using EPDs in a scenario to making decisions on which bulls they felt where the most genetically valuable. Each group had $5,000 to spend on three bulls, purchased from sellers in the room. Negotiations and group discussion was lively. RAAA CEO Tom Brink spoke about the DNA data that was collected from the LiveWiRED calves, explaining the genetic tests and how we can use the data to compare the low- and high-end-sired calves. We finished out the night with a nutrition, health, cattle handling and Red Angus knowledge matching game, followed by card games, line dancing, and snacks. Saturday morning, juniors loaded the bus for Lathrop, Missouri, where the LiveWiRED calves are being raised.
JRA Update Dan Snodgrass, a Missouri cattleman, explained his operation and work with the project calves. Juniors were challenged with two scenarios to determine quality of the LiveWiRED calves. The first scenario was a heifer keepcull class based on EPDs. The goal was to select the top four of eight heifers to keep as replacement females. The second scenario involved 15 LiveWiRED calves. Juniors sorted them into groups of five, based on frame size, weight and uniformity. The exercise created a discussion about sorting calves when selling them at a sale barn. Juniors learned more about what buyers look for, particularly, uniform pens that have the capability of being fed out on the same ration at a feedlot. The afternoon session consisted of three rotations, each pertaining to a
specific topic in cattle development. Dr. Craig Payne, an Extension Veterinarian at the University of Missouri, spoke with juniors about cattle health, particularly at weaning time. Payne brought in modified-live vaccines for juniors to mix, a stand-up cow head and neck with an injection site available to administer injections, and bananas to practice intramuscular injections. Glen Waters, of Purina, spoke about nutrition and how the environment can play a role in diet factors. He emphasized key ration ingredients and how they affect the body. Miriam Martin, a graduate student at Colorado State University, discussed cattle handling and created a hands-on learning activity for juniors. She spoke about working cattle through chute systems, in tubs, and handling small versus large groups. She emphasized

how shadows and objects hanging on a fence line could effect a calf being worked. Juniors then had the opportunity to sort cattle and develop methods of how what they learned could be used in their operations. To finish out the event, juniors enjoyed recreation and mingling at the “Main Event” with bowling, laser tag, arcade games and a gravity ropes course. Young Stockman’s Program allotted juniors the opportunity to develop hands-on and decision-making skills. It also facilitated skills develop in communicating their reasoning behind decisions, and learning more about how operations in different parts of the country vary from their own. The activities created excitement and enabled juniors to meet fellow Red Angus enthusiasts from across the country. ■

Driven was one of the high-selling bulls in the 2016 Bieber Red Angus sale for $25,000. We feel that Driven is the best Hard Drive son out there and, with Hard Drive not producing semen, he is prime candidate to replace him. The first set of bulls just sold this spring and were an outstanding set. Driven offers lots of growth with tremendous carcass. Driven is a must-use bull in 2018. Semen Available. HB

RAAA's New Website is Live!
Last month, the Red Angus website received a makeover. After several weeks of planning and perfecting, the brand new RedAngus.org was launched to the public. The site features updated images and displays, a robust search function to help members find exactly what they're looking for and easy sign-up avenues for the Stockyard, Sale Calendar and eNews.
The Red Angus website team, along with input from the staff and board, have laid out the site to be efficient and functional. They worked with Propaganda 3, a media agency in Kansas City, Missouri, to bring the new site to fruition. A clear sitemap and easy-to-use dropdown menus make locating forms, handbooks, DNA information and marketing materials a breeze. As with the old site, there are main features on the front page, to bring attention to Red Angus news and events. It's important to note that REDSPro was not affected by this update and its functionality and design will remain the same. If you have questions or concerns about the new website, please contact Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications, at brandi@redangus.org. â– 60 American Red Angus Magazine â– April 2018

In Memory
Daren George Whisman Daren George Whisman passed away on Feb. 11, 2018, at Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 58. He was born on Aug. 28, 1959, in Hays, Kansas, to George and Berdena (Veatch) Whisman.
He grew up in rural Rooks County, Kansas, and graduated from Palco High School with the Class of 1977. On May 24, 1986, he was united in marriage to Leola Blanton in Torrington, Wyoming. They were blessed with three sons, Greggory, Geoffrey and Galen. Daren worked as a farmer, rancher and truck driver. He raised commercial Red Angus cattle. He served for eight years on both the Palco-Damar-Zurich Recreation Commission and the Palco USD 269 School Board, with two of those years as President of the Board. He was also a past member of the Church of the Nazarene in Palco.
He was a lover of music, especially 1970s rock classics and groups, and anything that would be considered old country. He played trumpet, guitar and piano and enjoyed singing, having even been a part of the Show Choir in high school. But one of his favorite pastimes of all was shooting hoops or playing football with his boys.
Donald John Thorpe Donald John Thorpe, 74, of Lebanon, Missouri, passed away Feb. 14, 2018, in his home.
Daren is survived by his wife Leola Whisman; sons Greggory Whisman of Palco, Geoffrey Whisman and wife Cammie of Victoria, and Galen Whisman of Palco; mother Berdena Whisman of Palco; sisters Carol Whisman of Palco, and Nancy Beyea of Walden, Colorado; and granddaughter Jayme Jo Whisman. He was preceded in death by his father George Whisman; and grandparents Harry and Edith Whisman, and Cletus and Lucy Veatch.
Mr. Thorpe is survived by his wife Jane; one daughter, Dawn Marie Carr (Darrell) of Burlington, Iowa; two grandchildren, Cole and Nikki Lavarias; one brother, Richard Thorpe (Mary Pat) of Washington state; one sister, Karen Walters of Washington state; several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The artist Sting said, “If you play music with passion and love and honesty, then it will nourish your soul, heal your wounds and make your life worth living.” Daren was a man who lived every day of his life with just such a heart, and he continually poured it out on his family, friends and neighbors. His passion nourished our souls, his love healed our
wounds, and his honesty made our lives worth living with him.
Donald and his wife Jane were members of the Red Angus Association of America.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents: Tillford Bernard and Cecile Agnes (Euclide) Thorpe; and one brother: Jim Thorpe. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Donald Thorpe to the Wagons for Warriors, Disabled American Veterans or Victory Junction Gang Camp and may be left at the funeral home. ■
