Driving Profit through Value-Added Programs Red Angus continue to be the most sought-after beef cattle in the industry. Top prices paid for these cattle have not been paid out just because of their hide color, but for decades of breeding in maternal traits and, ultimately, for a quality beef product for the end consumer. Whether selling replacement-quality heifers or a set of NHTC steers that qualify for China export, Red Angus commercial producers continue to market cattle utilizing value-added options for buyers to use. After returning from the Superior Video Royale sale in Winnemucca, Nevada, I took a more in-depth look at the Red Angus-influenced lot descriptions. It was no surprise that most of these load lots topped the market, but I was more impressed with how many value-added programs the Red Angus-sired cattle had compared to other breeds. In the cattle industry you often hear about “Program Cattle” and our commercial customers dominate that term. The Video Royale offered 5,500 head of Red Angusinfluenced steers and heifers from Region 1 (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and California) that weighed between 400 and 650 pounds. Over 4,000 of these calves sold as Age and Source Verified through the Red Angus FCCP or Allied Access programs. Nearly 4,800 head of those Red Angus cattle sold as either Natural or NHTC (Non-Hormone Treated Cattle) and, in many instances, they were in both of those programs. The Video Royale sale is generally a very well-received market with a large volume of quality cattle in all breeds. In a very competitive market, the Red Angus steers av-
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
eraged about a $28-per-head premium, with heifers averaging about a $40-perhead premium. “The cattle that top the market in Superior Livestock’s video auctions are always the cattle with a program behind them,” said Joe Lichtie, vice president of Superior Livestock Auction. “Superior Livestock recognizes and promotes the value-added programs to a national buyer base. When we then include the competitive bidding of the auction, it creates value for the sellers that use these programs. There is demand for program cattle and it pays to utilize the value-added programs.” These value-added options like Age and Source, NHTC, Natural, GAP Certified and Non-GMO are all ways to increase your bottom line in your operation. Perhaps the most important value-added program is a good vaccination protocol that gives buyers confidence that your cattle will stay in good health after leaving the ranch. Giving a description of what your bull battery consists of is also a great way to differentiate your cattle in the marketplace. Top Dollar Angus is an added-value program that verifies your cattle are in the top 25 percent of the breed for growth and carcass traits. For crossbreeding programs utilizing Red Angus and Hereford, the Premium Red Baldy Program certifies heifers that are sired by bulls in the top 50 percent for HerdBuilder and Baldy Maternal Index. Whether selling cattle in a sale barn, video market or in the country, all of these value-added programs will help keep your Red Angus cattle at the top of the marketplace. ■

If you have not already made plans to attend, it’s not too late to build the 2018 National Red Angus Convention into your schedule. Red Angus breeders, commercial producers, enthusiasts, international guests plus a sizable number of livestock product and service providers will come together Sept. 12 -14, 2018, in Watertown, South Dakota, for the most important meeting we conduct each year. Here are eight good reasons every Red Angus producer should be there. 1) The People. Red Angus people are the best to be found. The opportunity to see old friends and meet new RAAA members is second to none. More than 400 people are expected at this year’s convention, creating a unique opportunity to share conversations, exchange perspectives, laugh together and gain insight into the Red Angus business across different parts of the country. The number of life-long friendships and business partnerships created at past Red Angus conventions are too numerous to count. More of such relationships are await-
10 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
ing you this year in Watertown. 2) Conducting Business. Many important decisions are made each year at convention. RAAA members in attendance will be voting to determine who will be our next Association president. They will also be voting to fill five Board of Directors seats. That alone is important to the future direction of the Red Angus breed, but there’s more. Regional Caucus meetings and Standing Committee presentations bring attendees up to date on issues the breed and Association are dealing with and provide opportunity for input. 3) Education. If you like learning and want to stay abreast of key trends in the beef industry, Watertown is the right place to be. Expert speakers will cover a wide range of topics to help improve virtually anyone’s knowledge base. Change is taking place in our business at a very fast pace and technology never stands still. Our best defense regarding the unknowns of the 2020s is to make a strong effort to stay informed and educated on emerging trends that may soon affect our livelihood.

Spring 2018 RAAA Sire Summary
Association Commentary 4) Juniors in Action. A very positive part of each Convention is the prominent role the Junior Red Angus members play throughout the three-day event. You’ll see them behind the podium and working behind the scenes. They’ll be out among the crowd, smiling and spurring bidders at the Red Angus Foundation Inc. and Junior Auction Event. These young people gain tremendous leadership experience and it is enjoyable to watch them engage with the adults and play a major role in making convention successful. 5) Association and Breed Update. Get the latest information on RAAA programs, financials and strategic initiatives that are in the works. Learn firsthand about Red Angus breed growth and listen to the Marketing Team as they provide an in-depth review of the Spring 2018 bull sale season. We’ll challenge you to become a better Red Angus breeder, and then provide some ideas that may help you achieve that goal. And while you’re there, please support the RAFI auction by bidding aggressively while knowing that the funds raised go toward research furthering breed interests as well as our Junior programs. 6) BOLT Expected Progeny Differences. Ryan Boldt, RAAA Director of Breed Improvement, will discuss the new Red Angus EPDs, which utilize the latest statistical analysis and computer technology, providing the breed with the most accurate genetic predictions it’s ever had available. Ryan knows BOLT software firsthand and works closely with our partners at International Genetic Solutions on a daily basis. He has much to share that will benefit both seedstock and commercial producers. 7) Biggest Trade Show in Red Angus History. That’s right, the 2018 Trade Show is destined to set a record for size and number of participants. There will be a lot to see and discuss with our sponsors and vendors, who are an important part of every convention. 8) Have Fun! Last but certainly not least, RAAA members and commercial attendees will find that the 2018 National Red Angus Convention offers many ways to have fun. Several on- and off-site events are planned that are certain to put a smile on your face. And don’t forget about the food. It always adds to the enjoyment of the entire event with lots of great beef, of course! On behalf of the RAAA Board and Staff, we hope to see you in Watertown, South Dakota! ■

Marketing Update
by Harold Bertz, Commercial Marketing Programs Coordinator
The How-To Guide for FCCP Feeder Calf Sales Several articles in this issue of the American Red Angus Magazine focus on the success of the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program and how to enroll your calf crop in the nation’s oldest and largest Process Verified Program. The history and resulting impact of this program to commercial ranchers has been nothing short of astounding. This success revolves directly around the creation of extra dollars for Red Angus-influenced calf crops. Shortly after its inception, livestock barns across America realized the value of adding a special “FCCP Tagged” special sale to their battery of valueadded sales. By working with producers enrolled in the FCCP, livestock markets across America began scheduling sale dates that allowed for pooling the arrival of these value-added calves. Buyers were then able to create larger and more consistent loads of Red Angus-influenced feeders. The success of these sales can be tracked through the incremental growth of sales and the livestock auctions that host them.
The Commercial Marketing Team is often asked questions about what characteristics successful sales have and how to organize an FCCP Feature Sale in a particular area. Here are a few suggestions on making a sale successful. 1) Find a good host site. The most successful sales are held at livestock auctions that have a reasonable pool of Red Angus-sired calves in their service area and are willing to accommodate them. These auctions understand the value of cattle enrolled in the FCCP program for both the cattleman and the buyer and assist in promoting the sale to both parties. 2) Seedstock producers must promote the value of the sale and the FCCP program to their customers. Through cooperation with other seedstock providers in a given area, customers can be encouraged to participate in the FCCP program with the end goal of a value-added sale at a livestock auction convenient for them to use. As a major source of information and added calf value, seedstock producers can provide

a positive opportunity for their customers’ success. 3) Commercial cattlemen must work together to bring their high-quality calves to town on the same day. Enrolling in the FCCP program, weaning, vaccination and genetic certifications are all ways producers can add value to their calf crop. By pooling these quality cattle on the same day at the same location, buyers have the opportunity to purchase larger groups of similar cattle allowing them to reduce their risk and pay more for calves. 4) Successfully market the sale. The Commercial Marketing Team at RAAA will assist in every way possible to achieve a successful FCCP-influenced sale. A list of sales is listed in the ARA’s September through January issues. This list alerts both buyers and sellers of the opportunities to place or purchase top-quality feeder calves. The sale dates are also listed on RedAngus.org. With proper advance notice, a FeederFax can be sent to prospective buyers describing the offering available. Ads with sale dates are also placed in several livestock publications throughout the nation. If you do not have a special FCCP section at a livestock market near you, but would like to, give these few characteristics of a successful sale some thought. A member of the Commercial Marketing Team would welcome the opportunity to assist you in setting up a sale in your area. A successful sale involves a team effort of livestock auctions, seedstock breeders, commercial cattlemen and RAAA staff. Done correctly, these sales add value to feeder calves and continue to deliver the message that Red Angus are worth more.
Marketing Update
FCCP Shatters Enrollment Records, Validates Profitable Red Angus Genetics by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications
The Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program, the longest-running and bestrecognized USDA Process Verified Program in the beef industry, continues to shatter calf enrollment records. In fiscal year 2017-2018, the FCCP, commonly known to cattlemen and women as the “Yellow Tag” program, grew total enrollments by more than 5 percent and enrolled over 172,000 high-quality Red Angus-influenced feeder calves. Red Angus commercial producers recognize the value of the yellow FCCP tag and continue to see market-topping premiums for a minimal investment in enrollment. The 99-cent tag returns, on average, a $2.80-per-hundredweight premium, which equates to more than $16 on a 600-pound Red Angus feeder calf – a calf which most often sells at or near the top of the market. Compound that figure across truckloads of calves, and beef producers are quick to realize the value of Red Angus genetics guaranteed by the yellow tag. The FCCP combines three important components commonly found in successful value-added programs: genetics, source and age verification. Producers who enroll in the FCCP are able to capitalize on stronger demand from feeders and packers to fill Angus product lines. The Red Angus combination of rapid early growth and carcass quality delivers tangible benefits to producers in a highly competitive marketplace. The FCCP was first established in 1995 and to date nearly 2.5 million head of Red Angus-influenced calves have worn the profitable yellow tag. The tag is available in two options – the traditional visual tag for 99 cents each, or as a combination visual and RFID tag for $3 each. Producers must answer a few breeding and management questions, thereby verifying traceability to at least 50 percent Red Angus breed influence. To learn more or enroll calves in the program, contact Chessie Mitchell at 940-226-4762. ■ 16 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018

Member Services Update The Ideal time to report calving data is NOW! Birth and weaning weight and date data is fundamental for complete contemporary group data and principal to eliminate any reporting bias. With the first installment of THR Spring Herd billing in July, plus weaning data collection starting in September, the ideal time to report calf data in now to maintain on schedule with Total Herd Reporting and to avoid any reactivation fees. In the case a calf or reason code was missed for a dam during the ideal time to report, the National Office requests ALL to review cows on inventory to verify data has been reported for those dams. This is called the “No Progeny Report.”
The No Progeny Report allows for the dams to still be reported on. It should be returned as soon as possible to avoid reactivation fees on females that should remain active in your herd. This is currently requested for the Fall 2017 calf crop. The how-to guide is a great place to review what is needed for this report. Are your sires on file for parentage? Per the Rules and Regulations, ALL sires for any calf must of be on file for parentage. To-Do Check List: • Collect DNA sample on sire (Tissue, Blood or Hair). Test kits can be supplied by the National Office by calling 940-387-3502, Ext 8.
24 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
• Fill out proper DNA order form including registration number of sire, and marking “Parentage” as test requested. • Send sample, order form and payment to National Office for processing. Weaning is a supreme time to collect DNA samples. It allows for plenty of time before sale season to test for genetic defects, obtain enhanced EPDs through the GeneSeek Genomic Profiles (GGP ULD, LD or HD) or Zoetis i50K or HD50K tests, and to confirm parentage verifications to sire and dam on each individual. To make sure you can tackle this task when weaning occurs, contact the National Office today for DNA testing kits. IT IS NEVER TOO EARLY!

What Drives Genetic Progress? by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement
Cattle breeders are provided with many metrics to describe the genetic merit of cattle. These include adjusted phenotypes, ratios and EPDs. However, these tools do vary in their ability to accurately describe genetic merit. Red Angus has long been a strong advocate for making selection decisions based on EPDs, but there are also other factors that influence the rate of genetic progress within a herd. The rate of genetic change is influenced by selection intensity, generation interval, genetic variation and accuracy of selection. Each factor plays an important role in the overall genetic progress that can be realized. Selection Intensity and Generation Interval The first two parts of this equation are the decisions of selection intensity and generation interval. Selection intensity is how superior the animals retained as replacements are compared to all available replacement candidates. The measurement of choice for this decision is EPDs. Another factor is generation interval, which represents the amount of time needed to replace one generation with the next. The challenge becomes that these two factors are generally inversely related. In order to have a higher selection intensity fewer replacements are retained, which lengthens generation interval. If generation interval is shortened a higher percentage of possible young selection candidates must be retained. Therefore, it is important to optimize the relationship between these factors. Genetic Variation The next factor is the amount of genetic variation available for a trait(s) of interest. This factor shows within a group or population how large the spread is in the genetic merit for a trait(s) of interest. This factor is important because if the spread of genetic merit is narrow it becomes more difficult to make genetic progress, however, if the amount of variation is large, then genetic progress can be executed more quickly. Accuracy of Selection The final factor that influences the rate of genetic change is the accuracy of selection. Accuracy of selection refers to what metric a producer uses to make selection decisions. Out of the available selection tools, EPDs are the most accurate and efficient method to make genetic change. The RAAA released its first set of genetic predictions in 1974. Since that time, considerable research has been dedicated 30 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
to improving the accuracy of selection tools. Many advancements have been made through the use of better statistical models to evaluate cattle performance data, use of genomic information, and the implementation of Total Herd Reporting to collect data on all animals within a herd (thereby avoiding partial reporting). Currently, RAAA is on the cusp of another major milestone through the release of the IGS Multi-Breed analysis powered by BOLT. This system is another leap forward in improving the accuracy of selection in Red Angus cattle. With this new BOLT-driven system, EPDs are calculated using over 17 million pedigree and performance records. In addition, the BOLT software has the ability to include genomic information directly into EPD calculation process. Not only that, but the models used for EPD calculation are more advanced. In short, this new evaluation allows us to more accurately describe cattle’s genetic merit. While these assets of the evaluation are impressive some still may require more proof that the new EPDs are doing a better job of predicting genetic merit. The IGS genetic evaluation team has validated the BOLT EPDs to show that they are, in fact, more accurate than the EPDs derived from the previous evaluation methods. On page 32 is a short report that shows the validation of the BOLT EPDs compared to the previously used Cornell software. The results of this analysis – using multiple metrics of comparison – showed that the BOLT-derived EPDs were indeed more accurate. What this means is that the new BOLT EPDs should allow for more accurate selection decisions, that should in turn lead to more rapid genetic progress. Better selection tools = faster genetic progress in your herd. ■

Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT Are the New BOLT-Derived EPDs More Accurate Than Previous Cornell EPDs? By Mahdi Saatchi, Rohan L. Fernando, Lauren Hyde, Jackie Atkins, Steve McGuire, Wade Shafer, Matt L. Spangler, and Bruce Golden, IGS Genetic Evaluation Team and Consultants. The ASA and International Genetic Solution (IGS) partners invested in a new and improved genetic evaluation software called BOLT to replace the Cornell EPD evaluation system. Among other benefits, this enables the use of Single-step methods for incorporating genomic information into the National Cattle Evaluation instead of the blending approach. In the Single-step process, the DNA marker genotypes are directly incorporated into the genetic evaluation along with the phenotypes (performance data) and the pedigree. As a result, the genomic data has an impact not only on the genotyped individual, but also on all the relatives of that genotyped individual. This allows for the genomic information to improve the accuracy of non-genotyped relatives. The Multi-breed Genectic Evaluation powered by BOLT squeezes more information from the DNA markers by allowing for certain DNA markers to have a larger influence on predicting the genetic merit of an animal than other DNA markers while some DNA markers to have no effects on trait(s) of interest. This model is closer to what we expect based on biology where some parts of an
animal’s genome (or genes) play more important roles than other parts of its genome (or genes). This is unique to the IGS Single-step method compared to other organizations where the DNA marker information is used to adjust relationships among the individuals. Are the BOLT EPDs more accurate than the Cornell derived EPDs in the real world? To answer this question, we performed a validation study where we ran a data set (pedigree, performance, genomics) through both genetic evaluation software (BOLT and Cornell) to compare the accuracies of the EPDs produced. To enable a fair comparison, we removed the performance records of animals born in 2015 and later from the evaluation in both systems to be used as progeny performance records for validation purposes. Table 1 shows the correlations between EPDs and progeny performance of non-genotyped sires evaluated in both systems that have progeny born in 2015 or later with recorded birth, weaning, and yearling weights. As shown, the BOLT EPDs are more accurate than Cornell EPDs as the correlations are higher for BOLT EPDs with sires’ progeny performances.

To have a better sense of improvement in accuracies, we ranked sires based on either BOLT or Cornell EPDs for birth, weaning and yearling weights. Then, we compared the progeny performance of the top 1% vs bottom 1% ranked sires for each trait in each evaluation system. The results are shown in Table 2. Toedtli Ranch – Totally Committed to Quality Genetics, Nutrition and Marketing by Teres Lambert for American Red Angus Magazine
When word spread that their calves lit up the Week in the Rockies Superior Livestock Auction video sale in Breckenridge, Colorado, this past July, Doug and Joe Hatch couldn’t help but smile.
Joe and Doug Hatch
36 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
“Gosh, there are a lot of good cattle around, and it is pretty exciting to watch our calves sell and be among the top four or five high-selling Red Angus groups,” said Doug Hatch, Toedtli Ranch, of Stoneham, Colorado. “Receiving such a good price for our calves and then having the same people buying them year after year tell us that our steers must be performing. That makes you feel pretty darn good.” Doug’s son, Joe, added, “Our goal is to have repeat buyers. That says our calves are working for the buyers and making them money.” Come this fall, Toedtli Ranch’s presold steer calves will undergo a Vac34 program. Then the calves will be sorted into three loads according to weight: 675 pounds, 615 pounds and 550 pounds. Toedtli Ranch calves are the result of what Doug said are the three big things that a rancher has control over – genetics, nutrition and marketing.
“We’ve found that all three factors must work together,” Doug said. “Emphasizing one area and ignoring the other two won’t cut it. The same for emphasizing genetics and nutrition while ignoring the marketing aspect. “Of the three factors, marketing is perhaps the trickiest. You need to have the goods, and genetics and nutrition give you the goods, but then you have to market your product the best you can.” Genetics, Nutrition Red Angus genetics have been a part of Toedtli Ranch for close to 20 years, and Doug stayed with Red Angus when he returned to the ranch and took over management in 2010. His son Joe graduated college and returned to the ranch in 2014. Joe Hatch explained that Craig Toedtli owns the ranch, with himself and his dad managing it. Today, the ranch has about 500 producing cows and an additional 80 replacement heifers. Doug and Joe each have 50 cows of their own that they run the same as the ranch’s cows. “Craig has allowed us to run the ranch as if it were our own, and the three of us make a great team,” said Joe. Located in northeastern Colorado – a stone’s throw from where Wyoming and Nebraska statelines meet Colorado, Toedtli Ranch is cow country where the stocking rate is anywhere from 100 acres to 14 or 15 acres per animal unit. Cows get only mineral, water and grass – mainly Western wheat, buffalo and gamma – in the summer. They are supplemented in the winter and get fed only when they calve. Toedtli Ranch cows have to be genetically engineered to convert grass and raise a calf that weans at 50 percent or more of her weight or they won’t work on this ranch or in this country. “The cow sets the tone for the calf,” said Joe. “We raise feed-efficient cows that fit our environment. “Our ideal cow is about 1,250 pounds that will wean a 650-pound steer calf. We know we have a few cows bigger than 1,250 pounds, however, as we weigh every cow and every calf and we keep a flow chart on every cow, we can go back and look what each cow has done over her life time in one chart.” American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018 37
Toedtli Ranch – Totally Committed to Quality Genetics, Nutrition and Marketing Doug chimed in that one of his favorite days on the ranch is “cull day.” “We are ruthless when it comes to culling,” he said. “If we have to help a calf get started, that female is gone. This is not a dairy. We don’t milk cows.” Other factors that can lead to a female getting culled include bad udders, structure, poor production and undesired temperament. A cow gets only one strike against her before she’s gone. Doug pointed out that, because he and Joe “just run cows and don’t farm,” they spring calve. Heifers start calving March 15, with the cows starting to calve April 1. “April is our big calving month,” Doug explained. “April is typically a good month weather-wise for us, and it is closer to grass.” At 30 days into calving, typically all but 50 of their cows will have calved. Fertility is a key criterion by which replacement heifers are selected. For a heifer to be considered a replacement, she must have been born during the first 21 days of the calving season.

Last year, Doug and Joe selected 120 young heifers as replacements, and then used Red Navigator to narrow their selection to the top 80 head. Red Navigator is a DNA test specifically designed for commercial Red Angus females in which the genetic panel profiles heifers on the Red Angus EPDs suite. Owners receive results in the form of individual percentile rankings as compared to all other commercial Red Angus genotyped animals. “We want to continue to make genetic progress in our herd, so using Red Navigator makes sense,” Joe said. “Anyone will tell you that you can’t determine genetic potential from looking at the outside of an animal. And, while Red Navigator has a cost associated with it, it’s a tool that we believe is a good investment.”
Doug and Joe Hatch select 120 heifers as replacements, then DNA test them through Red Navigator that is specifically calibrated for commercial Red Angus females. They retain the top 80 head after they receive the Red Navigator results.
After their replacement heifers have been selected, Doug and Joe allow several neighbors to come to the ranch and pick replacements.

Toedtli Ranch – Totally Committed to Quality Genetics, Nutrition and Marketing They also consign replacement-quality heifers to one of their seedstock producers’ bull sales. “We are looking to continue moving forward with our replacement heifer business,” Joe elaborated. “That is one of the things that we are most satisfied with, as our customers come back every year and buy replacement heifers for their own herd. “Our goal is to produce females that will work in the northern environment on any ranch and produce at the top of our customers’ herds.” Wanting all the genetic power they can get, Toedtli Ranch artificially inseminates all of their heifers and 130 cows. Their AI sires, Joe pointed out, are “industry leaders for driving economic traits.” He added that an AI sire won’t get a second glance if he doesn't rank in the top 10 percent of the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indexes. Doug noted that going the AI route allows him and his son to use bulls that they couldn’t afford to buy. He pinpoints the ranch’s cost to AI at $60 per head – and he contends that this $60 per head results in a significant return on investment.
42 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
Toedtli Ranch AI breeds all their replacement heifers and 130 head of cows to produce females that work in their northern environment while raising Top Dollar Angus calves.

Toedtli Ranch – Totally Committed to Quality Genetics, Nutrition and Marketing When it comes to natural-service sires, Doug said he and Joe have “no trouble spending money on bulls.” The caveat is that the bulls must be “really good ones,” meet their stringent criteria and hail from a Top Dollar Angus Seedstock Partner. When a bull sale catalog arrives at the ranch, the men use a sortable data program to help identify their first cut of bulls. Doug goes through his sale catalog and marks his selections while Joe goes through his own sale catalog and notes his top picks. Then the father and son sit down and check which bulls they both liked. “Bull selection is one of the most important things we do,” Doug stated. “We only buy Top Dollar Angus bulls – and Top Dollar Angus bulls that we both agree on. It is tough for a bull to be purchased by us. We want bulls that are pretty close phenotypically and EPD-wise. “The bottom line is that we want a powerful, even set of steer calves and an impressive set of replacement heifers. But you have to constantly remember that producing top-quality calves takes more than sire power – you must have the mama cows that are good too.”
44 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
Steer calves wear the yellow FCCP tag verifying age, source and Red Angus genetics. Their powerful, even set of steer calves consistently sell near the top in the Week In The Rockies Superior Livestock Auction video sale.

Toedtli Ranch – Totally Committed to Quality Genetics, Nutrition and Marketing Marketing Every steer calf born at Toedtli Ranch receives a yellow Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program ear tag. “Just because a calf has a red hide doesn’t mean that it’s a Red Angus, and we want our buyers to know that our calves are sired by Red Angus bulls,” Doug stated. “The FCCP yellow tag is recognized by feeders and packers and guarantees the calf is at least 50 percent Red Angus in genetic make-up. “We do a lot of value-added stuff, and the yellow tag does add value to our calves.” Having spent a number of years working in feedyards, understanding what feedyards want when it comes to cattle and knowing that there are thousands and thousands of cattle available to buyers, Doug recognized the value of participating in the Top Dollar Angus program. “I could tell someone our calves should perform well in the feedyard and on the rail, but why should anyone believe me? Anyone can say that,” Doug said. “By participating in Top Dollar Angus, we have a third party that provides genetic certification that our cattle have genetic performance built in.
Good cows, Top Dollar Angus sires and individual data on each cow and calf help Doug and Joe Hatch manage Toedtli Ranch and produce market-topping calves each year. “This helps our cattle sell at top market prices. Heck, if I ran a feedyard, I would be buying Top Dollar Angus calves before other calves as they would lessen my risk.” When asked to name one tool that added the most to Toedtli Ranch’s profitability or contributed the most to helping produce highly desired steer calves and in-demand replacement heifers, Doug stated, “I can’t give credit to any one entity. All factors contribute.”■

Meyer Natural Angus Meets Customer Needs with Red Angus by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications
Niche markets – natural, organic, vegetarian-fed – are a growing sector in the beef industry. Consumers desire to know more about where their food comes from, how it was produced and how production methods and processes affect their well-being.
Several retailers have identified these niche markets as opportunities for increased profits and growth. Meyer Natural Angus, a company focused on providing beef for these niche markets, has had a profound impact on the Red Angus breed since the company was started in 1994.

Robert Meyer, founder of Meyer Natural Angus, is a Red Angus breeder and wanted to fill the supply line with Red Angus-influenced cattle to meet increased demand. RAAA agreed to a partnership and has been endorsing Meyer Natural Angus since 2001. Angell has seen his fair share of fed cattle move through the supply chain during his time at both the RAAA and at Meyer. In fact, since Angell joined Meyer in 2006, the company has nearly tripled the number of cattle it processes every year due to a growing demand for natural beef from an increasingly inquisitive customer base. Very few cattle that are marketed through Meyer Natural Angus labels are purchased through an auction market. Angell attests that he and his fellow buyers for Meyer require cattle that have the proper paperwork and management in place to meet program specifications and grade well in the plant. “It’s critical for us to identify cattle with the right genetics, management and nutrition, and Red Angus cowcalf producers can help us meet that need.” Angell says that the company does utilize cattle enrolled in the Feeder Calf Certification Program to supply its brand. They would love to have more in the supply chain since Red Angus cattle have a lot of positive

attributes from a feeder’s perspective and perform well in the packing plant. The FCCP-tagged cattle not only perform well in the yard and the plant, but the yellow tag also provides additional marketing opportunities, such as exporting beef to China, resulting in additional value for those FCCP-tagged cattle. In addition, he adds that multiple Grid Master award winners have had their cattle marketed through Meyer Natural Angus. In a marketing landscape with endless value-added opportunities, producers should have no problem identifying outlets in which to market their cattle. Angell’s advice to producers wanting to capitalize on value-added marketing programs – such as Meyer Natural Angus – is to keep accurate and detailed records of treatment, nutrition and management practices. “Producers should investigate the various marketing options available to them and how those align with their management practices and their ranch. Ask questions and dig deep into whether or not a branded program can work with your operation,” said Angell. To learn more about Meyer Natural Angus, contact Blake Angell at bangell@meyerfoods.com. n

The Tag that Covers the Nation by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator, and Chessie Mitchell, Tag Programs Coordinator, with excerpts from “The History of Red Angus” book
62 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
Nearly a quarter-century after its inception, the Feeder Calf Certification Program – tasked with identifying Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced feeder cattle – continues to gain momentum as the industry’s longest-running and best-recognized genetic, age and source program. At the close of fiscal year 2017-18, the Red Angus Association of America reported record-shattering enrollment numbers of over 172,000 head – a 5 percent gain over the previous year and a 43 percent increase in the past three years. The Red Angus “Yellow Tag” covers the nation from the western deserts to the eastern seaboard, and from the northern plains to the sweltering southern states. The program’s popularity spans diverse environments, terrains and markets, proving its return on investment time and time again to Red Angus stakeholders. The program has no enrollment fees and the only
cost is the price of the tag itself. Nearly 2.4 million calves have been enrolled in the program since its launch. How is a program conceived in the mid-1990s not only relevant 24 years later, but gaining momentum? Red Angus leaders created a business model for the program that addressed marketing needs across decades of change and breed growth by revolving the program around the success of commercial cow-calf cattlemen and women. Simply put, if commercial producers were profitable with Red Angus genetics, the entire breed and beef cattle industry would achieve success.
American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018 63
The Tag that Covers the Nation A Concept is Born In the early 1990s, RAAA leadership realized a need to add value to Red Angus feeder cattle. Therefore, a priority of the Strategic Plan was to design and implement a commercial marketing program. Lee Leachman, now of Fort Collins, Colorado, was president of RAAA from 1994 to 1996. In the “History of Red Angus” book, he recalled the premise for the program. “The goal of our marketing program was simple – we wanted to ensure that Red Angus-sired calves would earn the same marketing premiums enjoyed by [producers of] Black Angus calves. At the time, the success of the Certified Angus Beef program had created clear premiums for blackhided Angus calves,” said Leachman. “On a relative basis, Red Angus calves were being discounted.” The Association set out to create a value-based marketing channel that would reward Red Angus for their superior feedlot and carcass traits. The Inception To achieve its goal, RAAA hired Dr. Bob Hough in July 1994 with the challenge to create a commercial marketing program to service Red Angus bull customers. Hough went to work visiting with all Board members, prominent Red Angus breeders and even leaders of other breeds to determine what services would work best to add value to bull customers’ cattle. Based on his research, he presented a broad outline of Red Angus commercial marketing – including the Feeder Calf Certification Program – at the 1994 Convention. Through more research and collaboration, Hough, Leachman and RAAA Executive Secretary Dick Gilbert, worked to build an alliance with packing companies. “Our first strategy was to go directly to the packers to seek a value-based
marketing relationship,” explained Leachman. “We felt that we could offer a large number of Red Angus feeder calves that had superior traits on marbling, yield and carcass weight.” While the proposal to Monfort didn’t yield immediate results, it opened the door to food service giant, Sysco, which was seeking to increase its supply of Angus-based calves for its product lines. Hough attempted for months to secure a meeting with Sysco and, in the meantime, worked with the USDA Standardization Branch to develop a game plan for Red Angus to be inducted into branded Angus beef programs through genetic qualification. Sysco, one of the three largest beef buyers in the U.S., finally called Hough for a meeting. Along with Leachman, they discussed Red Angus’ virtues and pitched the opportunity to include them in its Angus product line. Hough’s groundwork with USDA paid off as he was able to assure Sysco that RAAA had a plan in motion to genetically qualify Red Angus-sired calves. Sysco also requested verification on carcass merit and Colorado State University provided detailed third-party analysis of Red Angus carcass EPDs that included both Red and Black Angus. RAAA had a member ship a Red Angus rib to Sysco for approval, and Monfort provided additional product when they did a processing test run. “These two initial meetings (Monfort and Sysco) set the ball in motion,” said Leachman. “We simultaneously began to develop a grid marketing system with Monfort while we developed a USDA program that would allow us to label Red Angus-sired calves as ‘Angus’ beef. Both of these efforts would put us ahead in the industry.” In the summer of 1995, the Red Angus FCCP passed a procedural audit and became the first program to be certified under USDA’s Quality System Verification Programs, and two years later was the industry’s first program labeled with USDA’s Process Verified shield. RAAA enrolled Red Angus bull buyers into FCCP through a simple interview of their management practices, and sold the bright yellow tags with unique USDA-verification numbers at near cost – only 99 cents per tag – that remain the same price 24 years later. RAAA worked to develop grids for Monfort’s plants, and the first set of FCCP-tagged cattle were processed at Greeley, Colorado, in November 1995.
64 American Red Angus Magazine ■ September 2018
The Tag that Covers the Nation The Early Years Now that they were identified with the yellow tag and not just generic red cattle, feeders soon learned the value of Red Angus cattle. They had excellent appetites and good dispositions making for fast-starting cattle in the feed yard and fewer dark cutters when harvested. They also learned Red Angus cattle were consist in their carcass weights and yield grades, and they could save expenses with shorter days on feed while the cattle still graded a high percentage Choice. The Red Angus Commercial Marketing team expanded with the growth of the program and more Red Angus-sired cattle across the country were wearing the yellow tag. RAAA hired Blake Angell as the commercial marketing director when Hough moved into the executive secretary seat, and Ann Holsinger served as the FCCP quality assurance manager, conducting enrollment interviews and providing customer service to commercial bull buyers. Starting in the spring of 1995, RAAA worked with Superior Livestock Auction to market special Red Angus sections within their regular video sales. Those special sections evolved to accommodate an expanding geographic area, and still today Red Angus-sired lots are highlighted throughout Superior sales as Certified Red Angus. Video auction companies also expanded to include Frontier Stockyards, Western Video Market, Northern Livestock Video Auction and Cattle Country Video. The Commercial Marketing Team branched out, working with local Red Angus groups to sponsor special Red Angus Feeder Calf Sales in local auction barns. They alerted feedlot managers and order buyers when FCCP-tagged calves were selling in barns or video sales by faxing a list – dubbing the free service “FeederFax.” Feeder listings are now emailed.
Challenges arose in 1996 when Monfort and Sysco’s relationship changed and, in the fall of 1997, RAAA shifted to Excel (Cargill), the nation’s second-largest packer, and created a new alliance through its Sterling Silver and Angus Pride product lines. In 2003, FCCP boldly merged the Red Angus Exclusive Pricing Agreement with the Angus America program which was reputed as one of the best quality-based gridmarketing alliances. “Finally, a program existed where red and black cattle could be fed in the same lot, shipped on the same truck, processed at the same plant, and paid the same premiums – with no distinction or sorting for color,” recalled Hough. Enhancements The RAAA Alliance Committee met in May 2005 and reviewed the existing Genetics and Source-to-Ranch-of-Origin FCCP points. The committee recommended adding “group age” to address customers’ desire to access markets which paid premiums for source- and age-verified cattle. The Board approved the change and staff adjusted the program’s logistics to incorporate group age verification. Then in May 2011, the RAAA Alliance and Marketing Committees recommended adding a new option to RAAA’s marketing programs to assist stakeholders who were utilizing half-blood Red Angus bulls or other breeds in a planned crossbreeding system. The new program would capture age- and source-verification premiums without the restrictions of genetic validation. The Board approved the recommendation and RAAA staff members developed protocol for the Allied Access program, an enhancement within the overall umbrella of FCCP. The green tag carries a unique identification number and the AA logo is printed on the neck of the tag. In 2014, RAAA and Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. released the Choice+ performance-based grid designed exclusively to pay premiums for cattle enrolled in the FCCP. The grid rewarded genetics and management practices that produced high-quality, predictable Red Angus beef, grading upper two-thirds Choice or higher. They enhanced the grid the following year, doubling the average premium and validating the worth of Red Angus carcasses. Also in 2015, RAAA negotiated a grid with Greater Omaha Packing named the G.O. RED grid. While this grid rewarded high-quality-grading cattle, it targeted high-muscling cattle that hit favorable yield grade numbers as well.

The Tag that Covers the Nation USDA approved FCCP-tagged cattle for the Bovine Export Verification Program for China in October 2017. This source verification for both Allied Access and FCCP-enrolled cattle opens international trade doors for Red Angus-verified genetics. Validated Success An upward growth trend in FCCP enrollment validates the program’s popularity with cow-calf producers, and in 2015, concrete data from an independent university study confirmed cattle wearing the yellow Red Angus tag brought more when sold at auction. The abstract, entitled “Effect of breed on the sale price of beef calves sold through video auctions from 2010 through 2014” (King, et al., J. Anim. Sci. Vol. 93, Suppl. S3-pages 640641.), contained data on 33,811 lots of calves totaling 3.3 million head that sold in 116 Superior Livestock Auction video sales. The study, conducted by Kansas State University, proved that Red Angus-sired calves sold for a higher price than all other breed groups and, as data was added each year, the market advantage of Red Angus continued to grow. While the spotlight shined on red-hided cattle, it was even brighter on those wearing the FCCP tag verifying they were sired by Red Angus bulls. In early-2018 the data showed that, on average, yellow-tagged 600-pound calves garnered $2.80 more per hundredweight than non-enrolled Red Angus-influenced calves – a nearly $17 premium per head or $1,344 increase in value on a single truck load. That is a solid return on investment for the price of a 99-cent tag. The ongoing study confirmed another treasure that ranchers already knew. While Red Angus FCCP-tagged steers were sought after in the feedlot, heifers were even more valuable as replacement females, often bringing more than their steer mates at auction so they could return to the ranch as breeding stock. Now with eight years of data pricing on 5.5 million head of steers and heifers, research reveals Red Angus-sired heifers command up to $11 per hundredweight more than females of all other breed types. Strategic Plan 2016-2020 calls for aggressive growth in tag enrollment, more retained FCCP tags in the feedlots, and increased carcass data collection – all made possible through one yellow ear tag. In the Red Angus breed, not only are registrations growing, but more special feeder calf sales are scheduled than ever before, and video sales are offering increased numbers of Red Angus calves. It is easy for commercial producers to enroll in the program. Their seedstock supplier should have already transferred 68 American Red Angus Magazine n September 2018
How to Enroll Your Calves in FCCP or Allied Access
1. Contact the RAAA National Office at 940-226-4762 to go through a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. Staff will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, additional documentation on breeding may be required such as semen documentation, lease agreements or information on purchased bred females. 2. After all documentation is recorded, RAAA staff will have the tags shipped directly to the producer. Calves need to be tagged prior to leaving the farm or ranch of origin. 3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return with a copy of their calving records. 4. Upon return of the customer enrollment agreement and calving record, RAAA staff will issue a USDA-approved certificate of compliance.
ownership of their purchased bulls, so all they need to do is make a phone call to RAAA and answer a few management questions. The FCCP tags will be shipped directly to the producer, and they must tag their calves before they leave the farm or ranch of origin. Verifying Red Angus genetics through a simple ear tag has more than accomplished the goal envisioned by breed leaders in the mid-1990s. Commercial ranchers are thriving because their Red Angus genetics are performing in all sectors of the industry – from the range, to the feedlot and rail, and finally to the consumer’s plate. As a result, buyers in all phases of the market are seeking cattle wearing a yellow tag that guarantees Red Angus genetics. n Editor’s Note: A detailed account of the development of the commercial marketing programs and FCCP is explained in Chapter 21 of “The History of Red Angus,” by Dr. Bob Hough. The book is available by contacting the RAAA National Office at 940-3873502.

We Live in a Discount World
by Jared Wareham, Top Dollar Angus General Manager
$ ®
The most common question I’ve received over the years that can be somewhat abstract to decode is, “What can I do to get more for my calves?” I truly think the best way to answer this question is to explain it from the perspective of the buyer. Recently, I spent a day or two visiting with feedyard managers, cattle procurement specialists and fat cattle buyers. I had the following ideology reiterated on many occasions – the beef industry is based on discounts more than anything else. I’ll do my best to explain precisely what they mean.
some of the discount – or risk – that they assume exists. Think of it as starting in a hole and working your way out. Health, evenness and flesh are at the core of those things that tend to draw the largest barrage of “initial” discounts and must be overcome before moving into the next layer of value addition. Much like grinding out your first mountainous ascent.
Value-added programs don’t necessarily add value to a set baseline price. Rather, they begin by removing
You might think to yourself, “I vaccinate every year and I’m not sure I ever get paid for it.”
K ed Angus 2 R Functional,
Maybe you are, and you just don’t know it. Proper vaccination protocols along with documentation are worth a lot. Not having a reputation for healthrisk cattle is a tremendous discount to remove from your program. For the most part, cattle feeders remember the good groups of cattle they feed. However, I guarantee you, they ALL remember the bad ones. Next, tighten up those calving windows. Cattle procurement specialists need to buy cattle 50,000 pounds at a time to be efficient with trucking costs.

We Live in a Discount World Selling in semi-load groups may be one of the largest discounts that can be removed. Additionally, groups that are very even for size, type and quality require little to no sort upon arrival. Therefore, they have the potential to be fed as an intact group: same pen, same ration, same number of days on feed and same harvest date. Sorting, days on feed and other logistical items that need to be managed require time and labor. Those have a cost in the feedyard, the same as they do on your ranch. One of the more common discountable issues that can plague feeder cattle owners is getting cattle too fleshy. Feeders simply aren’t going to pay for the lossof-production risk those cattle represent. Overly fleshed cattle generally suffer excessive shrink and go backwards for a time before they start growing again. This can also increase their percent probability of a stress-related health incident. Someone is going to pay for that

latent period of production and risk. Mostly likely, it won’t be the next guy that owns them. Lastly, cattle that are set up to achieve more value for the buyer when they become the seller will be far more valuable than those that “could” or “might” achieve premiums. Words like “could” and “might” should be synonymous

Program cattle have the extra layers of value and pull-through demand to make them highly sought after. In a sense, they go that extra mile in helping you separate from the commodity pack and reach the pricing summit. Top Dollar Angus, Red Angus FCCP, NHTC, Certified Natural and GAP 4 are all examples of the highest demanded programs. I hate to leave you hanging, but next month, we will take a more in-depth look at programs and why they need to be on your marketing radar. n Jared Wareham, Top Dollar Angus General Manager jared@topdollarangus.com 660-492-2777

As Summer Turns to Autumn Reflect on Your Legacy by Patsy Krause, RAFI Fund Raiser As the seasons change and autumn approaches, we reflect back on the past summer. Kids were out of school, cow-calf pairs enjoyed lazy days on summer grass, and ranchers concentrated on putting up hay to nourish cattle in the upcoming winter months. There is no lapse in work that needs to be done on a ranch but if there is a slower time it feels like it might be summer. The days are longer and slower. Less hectic than the days of preg testing, calving, branding and harvest. During this time, many will carve out a few days away from the daily challenges of ranch life, to relax and refuel. As we ponder the fall to come and the routine tasks of ranching life continues, is this not a good time to ponder the evolution of one’s own life and what mark you will leave behind?
tions are important. It is not the size of your gift so much as it is your commitment to the future growth of our breed. Even in RAFI's early existence and with limited resources we are still supporting research projects and investing in our juniors to assure a bright future for Red Angus.
Currently, the Red Angus breed is experiencing growth at an exceptional rate. Everyone involved will agree this growth is not due to luck. It is largely because of the dedication and leadership of those involved with the breed. The strength that is gained from members, breeders, commercial producers, staff and juniors – all tied together by a love of the breed and guided by our strong mission, vision and core policies – is very powerful. One force pulling in one direction: “To continue advancing the quality, reliability and value of Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced seedstock.”
As you take a few days “off” with more time to think about your future and your position in life, will you take a minute to think about how you can help RAFI? Or how RAFI can help you. What legacy will the Red Angus breed become? What difference can your donation make when combined with donations from others pulling on the same rope?
The Red Angus Foundation Inc. plays an important part in the breed's growth as well. RAFI is a fairly young organization with a strong foundation and values to guide its future. As donations to RAFI increase, so does RAFI's ability to support the Red Angus breed and its growth. All dona-

JRA Update JRA President’s Message The Junior Red Angus Association of America held their annual meeting in July during RoundUp. The following members were elected to the Board of Directors: Madison Adams of West End, North Carolina; Shaye Koester of Steele, North Dakota; Kaitlyn Templeton of Clemmons, North Carolina; Genna VanWye of Lancaster, Missouri; Carson Ballinger of Morgan Mill, Texas; and Brock Fitzgerald of Bloomington, Illinois. I was elected to serve as JRA President. I plan to utilize the leadership, communication and networking skills I have learned from the opportunities I gained through my JRA participation. From
the time I attended my first program, I made sure to attend every event I could because I was gaining knowledge and creating friendships I knew would last a lifetime. As the former first lady of the United states, Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” I hope to share the strong passion and inspiration I have for the future of agriculture and the Red Angus breed with each and every junior I encounter. Juniors from across the nation joined together for Round-Up to travel the state of Arkansas July 18-22. Participants learned about all aspects of agriculture through a variety of site visits, but most importantly built leadership skills, formed relationships, gained in-
dustry knowledge, and participated in educational programs, all while having fun. On behalf of the association, I thank our sponsors for their support to create such a tremendous experience. This is a great event and I encourage our members to save the date for Round Up 2019 in Texas and New Mexico July 17-21. Our junior members are the future for the Red Angus breed, therefore, it is important to us that these juniors have every opportunity to be successful while being leaders. We appreciate the financial support of our sponsors as well as the time invested by our volunteers to support these juniors in gaining knowledge and skills to use in their future. I look forward to working with all of you that support our program as the junior board works on programs throughout this next year. Looking forward to serving the JRA! Madison
Red Angus Juniors Enjoy Action-Packed Summer by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications
Junior Red Angus Association of America members have been busy this summer with leadership activities all over the Midwest. Round-Up Round-Up, the annual JRA summer event, was held July 18-22, 2018, in Rogers, Arkansas. Round-Up is dedicated to providing industry knowledge, leadership skills, networking opportunities and educational tours to JRA members to prepare them for a future in the beef business. Additionally, there are competitive events, JRA board elections and stockmanship workshops to provide JRA members with ample opportunities to build their vault of applicable life skills.
During Round-Up, members visited a variety of regional businesses such as the Tyson Discovery Center, Sonstegard Foods, the University of Arkansas Fruit Research Station and Subiaco Abbey. Additionally, JRA members visited several agricultural operations including beef, poultry and peach farms where they acquired valuable information about diversified livestock and agricultural production. A new JRA Board of Directors was elected during the week in Arkansas. Six

Montana Junior Applies Scholarship to AI School My name is Ali Jo Merritt. I am 16 years old and will be a sophomore at Sidney High School in Sidney, Montana, this fall. I have been actively working with the Red Angus breed of cattle for seven years. In 2016, I became a member of the Montana Junior Red Angus Association and I am currently the secretary of the Montana Junior Association. My family and I live 15 miles south of Sidney near the Yellowstone River. I own and operate a small registered Red Angus herd. I am a member of Forever Buds 4-H Club and enjoy showing my cattle through Richland County 4-H and also attending the NILE Livestock show in Billings, Montana. Working with my cattle and participating in showing, 4-H and FFA is truly a passion of mine. In past years, with my small cattle operation, we could never support a bull. Our option was to either take our cows to a bull or find a qualified individual to perform artificial insemination for my herd. Artificial insemination seemed like the most realistic option.

AS
GOOD AS THE BEST, BETTER THAN THE REST!
JRA Update Through 4-H we became friends with a couple individuals who did artificial insemination for their occupations and they were happy to help me with my cows and heifers. Last year while attending the NILE Livestock show, our MTJRAA Leader, Christina Pierce of Lost Creek Red Angus of Molt, Montana, told me about the Beef Industry Education Scholarship available through the Junior Red Angus Association of America, which would help with the costs associated with taking an AI training course. Last fall I learned that an AI training course was to be held in Sidney, Montana, in March. The course was sponsored by Select Sires and directed by Dave Doctor. There were a total of 12 people that attended the course. I was the youngest one to attend. My parents knew how important it was for me to get certified in AI and allowed me to miss three full days of school to attend the course. The training course consisted of learning about the instruments and tactics of AI during the morning session and, in the afternoon session, our group went to the local livestock sales barn where we practiced inseminating cows and

At first, I found the process of trying to get the semen gun through the cervix and in the right spot very challenging. However, after much persistence and help from my trainers, I was finally able to get the procedure done correctly. At the close of the third day of training, I was officially certified in artificial insemination. I immediately knew I had to find some good experience to gain more confidence in my skills. In May and June I was able to gain some very valuable experience with local in-

dividuals who perform AI. I have helped AI around 600 cows and heifers with inseminating and loading semen guns. I also purchased my own AI kit. To be fully equipped I still need to purchase my own nitrogen tank, then I will be set! This year I inseminated my own cattle. It was truly a learning experience. With my first cow, our friend came to supervise, but I was able to do the rest of my cows on my own. I found out that there is much time, precision and care that go into impregnating your cattle. It has to definitely be a well-thought-out process from heat checking the cows, to setting up the protocols to proper handling of the semen. There are a lot of steps to take in. The confidence I gained over the summer was so beneficial. My herd seems to be pretty settled and I am hoping when we preg checked that they are all bred! I encourage anyone interested in learning about artificial insemination to consider applying for the Beef Industry Education Scholarship. The scholarship helped me realize my goal of becoming AI certified and I am very appreciative of the support I received from the Junior Red Angus Association of America. n
RAAA Year in Review: Phenomenal Growth Trends Continue by Gary D. Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing
Phenomenal. This is perhaps the best word that describes the growth that we have seen in the Red Angus breed this year. Record registrations. Record enrollment in FCCP. Record bull transfers. Can it get any better? Yes, it can. Registration numbers reached 67,495 in fiscal year 2017-18, the best year ever for Red Angus. Think back 25 years ago. This breed wasn’t even ranked in the top 10 beef breeds in the U.S. for the number of registered animals. Today, we rank in the top five. This must be gratifying for breeders who have known all along that persistent, steady growth is the road to success. Red Angus bulls and commercial Red Angus females – to be used as replacements in cowherds all over the country – are the hottest thing going. The latest data from Superior Livestock Auction shows that Red Angus commercial heifer calves bring between $5 and $11 more per hundredweight than any other breed type. Red Angus cattle have great maternal and carcass traits – which is a grand slam for the breed – and cattlemen know it. And they WILL pay up for it. Commercial ranchers and stockmen who have been tagging their calves with the FCCP “yellow tag” have known all along this was the path to take to identify Red Angus genetics and cattle buyers and packers are beginning to recognize the value of the FCCP tag as well. The oldest and best-known age, source and genetically verified tagging program in the beef industry set a record again this past year with over 172,000 cattle enrolled and tagged – and we are aiming higher. The Marketing Team’s goal is to have 250,000 cattle enrolled by the end of the 2020 fiscal year. Can you all help us achieve this? It takes teamwork to accomplish this goal. Breeders need to make sure the bulls they sell get properly transferred to the commercial rancher. They also need to help us educate the ranchers on the value of the tag. All you need to remember is that eight year’s worth of data from Superior Livestock sales (2010-2017) shows that Red Angus calves that have the FCCP tag carry a $2.80-per-hundredweight premium over Red Angus calves that do not carry the tag. The tag is the ticket to identifying Red Angus-sired calves that will perform efficiently in the feedlot and garner premiums for whomever owns them at harvest. Don’t forget that we have a couple of packer grids for feeders of FCCP-tagged fat cattle for which the feeder is rewarded for. Both Tyson’s Choice+ grid and Greater Omaha’s G.O. RED grid offer value-added opportunities and marketing outlets. Bull transfers in 2017-18 topped 15,000. There was a slight dip in 2016, but that bumped back up again in fiscal year 2017-18. The commitment in transferring bulls has been awesome to see and breeders should be congratulated for their efforts in moving the breed forward. It helps to drive supply of commercial calves that are eligible to be tagged and identified as Red Angus in the marketplace. Although the number of cows in the THR has dipped slightly, we are still in a general upward trend and with increased registrations this past year, we expect that figure to rise again in the years ahead. After all, the industry’s most-favored female is a Red Angus cow! There is NO BETTER TIME than now to be involved in the Red Angus breed. It is not a flash in the pan. Acceptance by the commercial industry for economically relevant traits has driven the breed to the forefront and Red Angus cattle are the talk of the industry. Let’s keep moving forward!

Stanley Lee Lock Stanley Lee Lock, age 64, of Republic, Missouri, passed away suddenly in his home on July 8, 2018. Stan was born Nov. 3, 1953, in Hiawatha, Kansas, to Harold and Eunice Lock.
nearly 39 years. His love for his daughter, Kelsey, ran deeper than the ocean and he was so deeply proud of her. Stan was passionate about good cattle, good horses and working with others to improve cattle genetics. Stan lived by the motto, “It’s a great day to be a cowboy,” and always applied his “cowboy logic” in his approach to life. Stan accomplished great things in his life, most importantly the love and respect of others. He is preceded in death by his parents; stillborn son, Kyle; and father-in-law, Roland Stiers.
He graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1971 and lived on the family farm until moving to Republic in 1991 after he accepted a district manager position with American Breeders Service. He held various positions throughout his career, working for Genex and currently serving as Beef Business Development Manager with Select Sires Beef. Through his work he had the opportunity to travel across our nation and experience places that most of us only know through books and movies.
Stan is survived by his wife, Denise Lock; daughter, Kelsey and husband T.J. Reichert, of Sedalia, Missouri; a brother, Steven (Linda) Lock, of Hiawatha, Kansas; his mother-in-law, Deloris Stiers, of Nemaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Dennis (Sara) Stiers, of Shubert, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Debra Miller, of Springfield, Missouri; five nieces and nephews; and five great nieces and nephews.
Stan and Denise were joined in marriage on October 27, 1979. He was a faithful and loving husband for
