‘Reds Rising’ Theme Captured Enthusiasm for Breed Another year has passed and the 2018 National Red Angus Convention is in the books. Our conventions are great opportunities to learn, reconnect with friends and build new relationships. This year I was looking forward to the convention in Watertown, South Dakota, because it was my first trip to this great agricultural state. I was not disappointed and my experience insured that I will have a return visit. Of course, I will plan a summer trip since the winter weather may not work well for someone who is Southern adapted.

Brink’s “State of the Association” address. Tom shared the tremendous growth Red Angus has enjoyed and its acceptance in the beef industry. Red Angus females are the most-favored brood cow on farms and ranches throughout the U.S., and their steer counterparts are in demand in the feeding and packing sectors. However, Tom cautioned breeders to not rest on previous success and challenged everyone to continue to improve their herds and maintain our reputation for cattle that excel from pasture to plate.

Great conventions do not happen without the diligent effort of many folks or the support of generous sponsors. We were fortunate to have tremendous backing from our allied industry partners and breeders with display booths. An active trade show adds to the education during convention and gives us a chance to thank our industry partners for their support throughout the year. Thank you to everyone involved in making this event successful and creating a wonderful environment for Red Angus stakeholders to conduct business and enjoy fellowship.

The committee reports that followed supported our growth and the progress in key areas. The increase in members using REDSPro and their positive comments about the system were notable. In addition, the Feeder Calf Certification Program continues to set enrollment records. Thank you to the RAAA staff and committee members for their service and commitment to advance the breed.

This was the first convention for 110 attendees and 323 total breeders partook in the event. This is a significant increase for first-time attendance compared to previous years. Member engagement in this event and others is a key to future breed success. The theme, “Reds Rising Over the Northern Plains,” captured the enthusiasm surrounding our breed. The Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium is a special feature of our conventions, and this year was no exception. Over 300 producers were on hand listening to topics that addressed fundamental production practices as well as new management techniques. I appreciated the commercial cattlemen panel that offered comments after each presentation. Their input offered significant insight into how to implement new technology and adapt to everchanging industry expectations. Thank you to the RAAA Marketing Team and to our Northern Plains hosts for an informative and enjoyable event. The General Session opened with comments from President Bob Morton and CEO Tom

6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2018

An outstanding group of JRA members were heavily involved in convention activities. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with this group of young industry leaders. They have a bright future and have a positive influence on everyone they encounter. Thank you to Kim Heller for working with our juniors and for doing the right things in the right way. The convention concluded with the election of new board members and the awards banquet. The Awards Committee did a great job of finding very deserving recipients for each accolade, and it was great to see fellow breeders and stakeholders recognized for their contributions. The secret to RAAA success has been – and will continue to be – the great folks that rally around this breed. I am blessed to have been chosen as president of this organization and the newly elected board members are outstanding. I look forward to working with them as we continue to take Red Angus to new heights. Thank you again to the North Plains breeders, to RAAA staff and to everyone that attended the 2018 National Red Angus Convention. Details for the 2019 Convention will be available soon and I hope to see you in Iowa. ■

Successful 2018 Red Angus Convention Showcases Teamwork

The 65th Annual National Red Convention, held Sept. 12-14, 2018, in Watertown, South Dakota, was by all accounts a huge success. Both member and commercial producer attendance set records, as did the number of vendors in our trade show. Speakers and producer panel discussions were very well received. The on-site DNA sample collection demonstration was informative and well attended.

Certainly noteworthy, the Red Angus Foundation Inc. fundraising auction, held at the beautiful Redlin Art Center, was both fun and successful, raising nearly $50,000 to support Red Angus junior programs and breed-advancing research. Many smiles were seen throughout the entire three-day event, and a lot of handshakes took place with the renewing of established friendships and the creation of new ones. Members attended the convention to conduct Association business through Board of Director elections, and area and regional caucus discussions, as well as to receive detailed updates on breed progress and Red Angus Association of America programs and initiatives. Another particularly meaningful part of the event is the Awards Banquet Friday evening. RAAA gives out a variety of awards each year, recognizing members and other Red Angus stakeholders for their often-unique contributions to breed. It’s always interesting to hear the history of each individual or breeding program, how their involvement with Red Angus came about and what they’ve done over the years. Teamwork is the key. Stepping back and taking a big-picture look at what made the 2018 National Red Angus Convention a success, we can unquestionably say that TEAMWORK tops the list. It took a team to pull everything together, or maybe we should say a lot of smaller groups and teams working on each different part of the convention.

12 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2018

To start with, the Area 5 Planning Committee gets a tremendous amount of credit for the overall organization of the event (Peggy Bieber, Stephanie Jung, Jared Namken, Rich Leiseth, Tory Sonstegard, Emmy and Bryan Huber, and Steve Koester) as do Halla Pfeiff and Chessie Mitchell, who carried a large portion of the responsibilities on the RAAA staff side of things. Endless hours of effort are required to plan and execute such a sizable event, and this team did a great job making everything run smoothly and even made some last-minute adjustments when they were needed. We brought more RAAA staff to convention this year, which was appreciated by both attending members and the staff themselves. It is always nice to put faces with names and voices. The staff also did a great job supporting the event – all the way from the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium, through the departmental update presentations, voting, Board meetings, meals, answering countless questions, taking pictures and the awards banquet. Several even stuck around Saturday morning after the convention ended to sit in on the Strategic Planning Committee update which lasted three hours. Thanks to the entire RAAA staff for all you did to help propel this event to new heights! Another “team” is the Board of Directors who traveled to Watertown a full day early for the main portion of the September Board meeting before convention started.

Marketing Update

As you can see, the Red Angus marketing team had exciting enrollment and premium reports to present at Convention.

Let the Good Times Roll by by Chessie Mitchell, Tag Programs Coordinator

Just like that, another National Red Angus Convention is in the books! Without a doubt, Watertown, South Dakota, was an enormous hit. As a testament to the convention’s success, we had a record-breaking attendance and a phenomenal set of speakers that left attendees with thoughtprovoking conversations about the beef industry. For the Marketing Team, one of the most exciting things that happened at the 2018 Convention was being able to report record-breaking tag enrollments, a phenomenal price advantage for cattle enrolled in the legendary Feeder Calf Certification Program, and new alliances with industry partners like IMI Global, a division of Where Food Comes From, Inc. In the Marketing Committee report at Convention, the team was able to present the final numbers for the past fiscal year in Red Angus tag programs. As you have heard many times now, the FCCP has experienced profound growth in enrollments

the past three years. The FCCP grew total enrollments by more than 5 percent and enrolled more than 172,000 high-quality Red Angus-influenced feeder cattle during fiscal year 2017-18. Red Angus commercial producers recognize the value of the yellow dangle tag and continue to see market-topping premiums for a minimal investment in enrollment. The 99-cent tag returns – on average – a $2.80-per-hundredweight premium, which equates to a more-than-$16 premium on a 600-pound Red Angus feeder calf. This calf most often sells at or near the top of the market. Red Angus steers continue to bring as much as other breeds and the heifers continue to bring more than any other breed type. These great numbers have been backed by eight years’ worth of data and research compiled by Kansas State University and Superior Livestock Auction. This is proof that Red Angus has a greater presence than ever before in the marketplace!

Another great report presented by the Red Angus marketing team was that Red Angus and IMI Global – a division of Where Food Comes From Inc. – have joined forces to support our Red Angus producers. This agreement will provide convenient access into natural and non-hormone-treated cattle programs to producers who utilize the Red Angus FCCP program. Consumers are demanding more information from the production chain about the beef they are eating. This new venture will easily allow benefits for both our producers and consumers! Clearly, the 2018 National Red Angus Convention was a great event! You could easily sense the positive energy about the breed the entire week. Now, it’s not too late to jump on the FCCP train and reap excellent premiums on your high-quality Red Angus-influenced cattle! Red Angus calves will be featured in many different Special Red Angus Sections at sale barns across the nation this fall. It makes sense to market your calves at one of these special sales to take advantage of the buyers who are aggressively bidding on Red Angus calves. RAAA Recognizes Carcass Excellence Through Grid Master Award by Harold Bertz, Commercial Marketing Programs Coordinator The Grid Master Awards recognize excellence in commercial cattle and the cattle feeding industry. Those firms who have successfully combined superior Red Angus genetics, feeding management skills and precise marketing to achieve success with the harvest of a superior beef carcass, earn the award. To be named a Grid Master, the entry must be Red Angus or Red Angus-influenced cattle enrolled in the RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program or the Allied Access program, and achieve a specified level of carcass excellence. Both conventionally and naturally fed cattle are eligible.

18 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2018

Conventionally fed cattle must be marketed in lots of at least 30 head, achieve a minimum of 85 percent Choice and Prime, have a maximum of 5 percent Yield Grade 4s and 5s, and a minimum grid score of 100. Naturally fed cattle must also be in lots of 30 or greater, achieve a minimum of 90 percent Choice and Prime, with a maximum of 10 percent Yield Grade 4s and 5s, and a minimum grid score of 100. This year 1,322 head of cattle comprising 22 loads earned the Grid Master status. Following are this year’s Grid Master Award winners and data regarding their cattle.

Member Services Bulletin Have you reported your 2018 Spring Calf Crop? Now is the ideal time to report calf data for the 2018 calf crop. By submitting now it allows for data to be inputted into the database with plenty of time for BOLT-generated EPDs, registration numbers produced for DNA submission for parentage or genomically enhanced EPDs, and sale catalog data extracted. Weaning weights are also mandatory for registration and while it is fresh on the mind, can be easily inputted. Is your contact information on your account current? Why is this important? We do the majority of our communication either via email or by phone. Address – Statements are sent out on the first of the month and we mail out reports for those that request it. Phone Number – We can get direction from you or may have questions that do not require information in writing. Email – We do the majority of our communication via email because most requests are needed in writing. Who is authorized on your account to communicate with us and process work for you? It is very important for us to know who we communicate with regarding your account. This includes invoices, payments, processing data or answering questions about what the next step(s) should be. Your contact information and authorized users can be updated via REDSPro under the “My Account” tab or

you can send us an email at info@redangus.org to make any updates. Don’t Delay! Submit DNA on your calves NOW! Are you planning on publishing genomically enhanced EPDs in a sale catalog? If so, jump ahead of the spring rush and submit DNA sooner instead of later. DNA staff cannot emphasize enough that the time it takes for your samples to process cannot be altered or rushed. The average turnaround time for a GGP-LD test submitted in February of 2018 was 19.75 business days. Alternatively, the same test in September was processing in only 14.9 business days. Don’t let the lab processes and seasonal rush of DNA submissions affect your sale catalog data! Visit redangus.org/genetics/dnatesting/ for DNA submission information and forms or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =KmaYRR80qJ8&feature=youtu.be for a tour of the lab! Report Fall Heifer Exposure Heifer Exposure is important and easily accessible data to submit. This data in not mandatory, but a key component in the Heifer Pregnancy EPD (HPG). We ask that you please take the time to report this information. What are the data reporting components? 1) Breeding In and Out Date or AI Date 2) Was the animal exposed? – Yes or No 3) Management Group Designation – Indicates the management group 4) Disposal Information – Disposal codes are available for heifers that are not being kept in the herd. This video tutorial will show you how to submit heifer exposure using the online database REDSPro. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjj0TXJ XWgU&t=58s Thank You! Thank you for a great Convention! The staff appreciates getting to see the many faces behind the phone calls and emails we receive. We look forward to seeing you in Dubuque, Iowa, or when you are in Denver, please stop by and see us! RAAA Annual Report RAAA published an annual report and distributed it at convention. The 16page downloadable report is posted online at redangus.org/communications and highlights the breed’s growth trends, the Marketing Team’s interactions, communication successes, BOLT-generated EPD progress, junior activities and financial statements. n

• Ensure the TSUs are sealed completely by the red stopper with the sample, fluid and green ball inside. • Always align hair follicles and place them under the sticky film on a hair card. • Collect samples from relatively clean and dry areas of the animal. • After collection, store TSU samples in the refrigerator, not the freezer.

26 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2018

• Only fill blood cards inside the printed circle and ensure they are dry before closing. • Do not submit a blood sample on any animal that was born a twin because of in utero cross contamination. Hair or TSU samples will yield accurate results. • Instead of pulling fine or small hair follicles on calves, try collecting blood or TSUs.

Impact of Red Angus Felt at National Red Angus Convention by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Communications Director

The 65th annual National Red Angus Convention attracted record-breaking attendance Sept. 12-14, 2018, in Watertown, South Dakota, at the Watertown Event Center. A large trade show, informative and valuable program, and exciting updates were on the docket for the 323 producers in attendance. The pre-convention program kickedoff Wednesday with the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium, coordinated by the Red Angus Association of America’s commercial marketing team, and focused on “Staying Ahead of the Curve.” Over 300 producers heard from a distinguished lineup of speakers featuring Dr. Stewart Bauck of Neogen, John Schroeder of Darr Feedlot, Brian Bertelsen of U.S. Premium Beef, and a producer panel comprising Wade Moser, Bob Yackley and Nolan Stone. The lineup of speakers delivered a thought-provoking program that provided all producers with actions to take home to the ranch regarding DNA technology, producing highquality beef to meet consumer demand and the importance of adding value to calves. The symposium was capped with a live DNA collection demonstration sponsored by Allflex and GeneSeek. The Red Angus Foundation Inc. hosted an auction Wednesday night to raise funds for research, innovation and leadership development. Multiple unique items were auctioned off including several art prints, home decor, vintage historical Red Angus items and, the gem of the auction, the “Pick of the Herd” from R.A. Brown Ranch. Proceeds from the Pick of the Herd sale were directed to the RAFI research fund as well as assisted with funds to induct Rob Brown into the Saddle & Sirloin Club. The auction raised nearly $50,000 for develop-

ment of the Red Angus breed through research and revolution. The convention was officially called to order Thursday morning with an opening general session featuring the “State of the Association” from RAAA CEO Tom Brink, in which he explained the tremendous growth the breed has experienced over the last year and shared with members the exciting potential for Red Angus moving forward. Allison Rivera, executive director of government affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, updated the audience on the state of affairs in Washington, D.C. and what the policy team for NCBA would be focusing on in the coming months. At the forefront of the conversation was the Farm Bill, which greatly affects all those involved in agriculture. Rivera also discussed electronic logging devices and Waters of the U.S. actions that have been ongoing in the nation’s capitol. Throughout the two full days of meetings, attendees heard from each of the organizational committees and the RAAA staff members that support committee work and activities. Each committee reviewed the past year’s accomplishments and laid out the plan of work for the coming months. The overall theme during committee reports was that both the breed and RAAA are growing tremendously and increasing market share in the cattle industry.

2018 RAAA National Convention Perhaps this was most strongly evidenced by the Marketing Committee’s report during which Chessie Mitchell, RAAA tag programs coordinator, shared that Feeder Calf Certification Program tag enrollments have been increasing exponentially and are trending toward record-breaking enrollment numbers. Additionally, the Marketing Team shared that the most recent Superior Livestock Auction data showed a $2.80-per-hundredweight premium for FCCP-tagged calves. Finally, Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA director of communications, announced the launch of Red Angus Creative – a new creative services branch of RAAA that will help producers reach a broader audience and increase visibility of the breed. Area 5 Northern Plains members hosted the convention and spared no effort to make the entire convention comfortable, entertaining and memorable. A private tour of the Redlin Art Center during the RAFI auction and entertainment from cowboy poet and humorist Rodney Nelson were both met with delight by all in attendance. Friday afternoon was all business as members participated in caucus meetings, gave their feedback to board members and elected Johnny Rogers of Roxboro, North Carolina, as the new RAAA president. Board members for the coming three-year term were also chosen by the membership; Sam Lorenzen was re-elected

in Area 1, Kay Klompien was elected to serve Area 2, Aaron Kravig was elected to serve Area 3, Jim Yance was elected to serve Area 8 and Jeff Pettit was elected to serve Region C. Following the business meeting, the Board of Directors selected Kyley DeVoe as first vice president, John Langdon as second vice president, Sam Lorenzen as treasurer and Connie Mushrush as secretary to fill the leadership roles of the organization. As is tradition, the week was rounded out with the annual awards banquet which honors the top producers in the Red Angus breed. Following a fabulous steak meal sponsored by Meyer Natural Angus, several Red Angus producers were recognized for their leadership and service to the breed. In closing, Stuart Gilbert of Stockport, Iowa, announced the 2019 National Red Angus Convention will be held in Dubuque, Iowa, Sept. 11-13, 2019, where the theme will be “Reds Rolling on the River.”

Morton Reflects on Breed and Association Progress During his Leadership Tenure

Bob Morton of Three Forks, Montana, served on the RAAA Board of Directors for eight years. He was the Association President during the final two years of his tenure, which ended at the 65th Annual National Red Angus Convention in Watertown, South Dakota, in September. Bob is now back to being a regular member of RAAA, but we wanted to hear his thoughts and reflections from his time on the Board of Directors and as President.

What initially motivated you to run for the RAAA Board? Morton: I hadn’t considered running for the Board until Harold Hughes called me and asked if I’d be willing to run. I was flattered that someone I looked up to as much as Harold thought that I might be a good representative for the breed. I was tentative about the thought, at first believing I didn’t have enough experience or wasn’t “good enough.” I then called Melvin Leland and Craig Bieber and asked for their thoughts. Both felt that I would do well and suggested that serving would be enjoyable and a great learning experience. Both actually agreed that I’d be “good enough” to contribute to a board position! During your early time as a Board member, what surprised you most and why? Morton: My introduction to the Board was attending the mandatory new Board member orientation in October 2010. That two-day experience was eye opening in a number of ways. I had never really studied the finances of the Association until then. Learning these details and going through them line by line gave me insight into how the Association operated. Then to learn more about all of the Red Angus marketing programs and the general day-to-day operations and being able to tie those things to the finances also added a lot of insight to RAAA. The Association faced some major challenges during your time on the Board. Offer your perspective on those difficulties and what was done to overcome them. Morton: The first large challenge we

Bob Morton faced was with the transition of CEOs in June 2013. The Oklahoma City Board meeting was the most stressful of my eight years. The following seven months – with interim CEOs in place while we searched for a permanent CEO – also challenged the Board to find someone to direct the business and move the Association forward. Two years later we found ourselves in a similar situation looking for a new CEO. I was fortunate enough to sit on that search committee and my time there solidified my decision to run for President. I saw great dedication from the committee members and it was obvious that these members cared deeply for the Association. I wanted to be a part of this new chapter. At about this same time came the next major challenge – the database. We knew that the database was outdated even before I joined the Board in 2010 and steps were being taken at that time to start developing a new one. When we

46 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2018

shut down the old “Redbull” database, it seemed that everything was going the wrong way. Jobs submitted to the Association were taking months to complete and the membership was understandably very frustrated. The new REDSPro database was not completed but we couldn’t go back to Redbull because it had fatal flaws and a system-wide crash was inevitable if we tried to use it again. We were truly stuck between a rock and a hard place. Our newly hired CEO, Tom Brink, had been handed a real challenge. With time, perseverance and especially hard work, REDSPro was developed well enough to release to the membership in August 2017 and most our members’ frustrations slowly began to dwindle. Looking in the rear-view mirror and comparing that to where we are now, leaves me with a lot of satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment. I feel that the rest of the Board and the staff should be proud of where we are today. Please offer a few thoughts on the structure of the Association and how it functions to benefit the Red Angus breed. Morton: The Association structure works extremely well. The Board makes decisions that are intended to move the breed forward. The Board uses committees to do the leg work and flush out all of the information that the Board will need to make informed decisions. If a particular committee needs more clarification on specific areas of concern, task forces are created and used to investigate those areas of concern and report back. The committee can then utilize those findings and is able to move forward. Committees not only work on problems but they also research new ideas and present them to the Board.

Morton Reflects on Breed and Association Progress During his Leadership Tenure The Board then decides whether or not to implement the suggestions of the committees, and staff then carries out the Board’s wishes. This structure has been proven to be very effective and serves the Association quite well. What do you believe were the best decisions the Board made during your tenure? Morton: The first was hiring Tom Brink. It was evident in Tom’s interview process that he could handle large complex tasks and that he wasn’t afraid of challenges. He was certainly handed large, complex tasks! Tom has done an exemplary job of helping the Association get back on track. Another great decision that the Board made was to move the office to Commerce City, Colorado. The Denver area is a hub for the beef industry and having a bright, cheery and well-lit new office has certainly improved the attitudes of the staff. The old office had many structural

problems, most noteworthy was the fact that whenever there was a significant rain, the roof and walls would leak and sometimes flood the office. Staff would have to stop working on registrations for days to try to clean and dry everything that got wet. With a new building, those problems are in the past. A side bonus to the move to the Denver area has been the hiring of multiple new staff members. The Denver area has a large pool of young and talented people to hire from and Tom has done an excellent job of finding and hiring great new employees. Discuss how do you see the breed positioned today versus eight years ago? Morton: Obviously the breed has a larger presence in the beef industry today than it did eight years ago, validated by the number of bull transfers, total registrations and members. More importantly looking at our acceptance in the commercial cattle industry will tell the real story. We have a major presence

on the summer video sales and our heifers are outselling all other beef breeds. Our steers are at the top of any market and, in much of the country, hide color no longer affects sale price. We still have a lot of work to do to help the coastal regions with acceptance of redhided cattle, but we are gaining ground and I foresee the east and the west coasts on a level playing field in the future. Any other reflections or thoughts you’d like to share with RAAA breeders and commercial producers? Morton: Look for the Red Angus breed to continue to grow and prosper in the future. The Board is as strong as it’s ever been and there are some great new additions to the Board roster. Our new president, Johnny Rogers, is going to be a great leader and, coupled with our strong Board, great committee members and phenomenal staff, the next few years and beyond will be fun and exciting for all of us. n

Meat Man First, Cattleman Second By Molly Bertz for American Red Angus Magazine

Hung high on the wall next to the checkout counter sits a hand-drawn portrait of John Bichelmeyer, the patriarch and founder of Bichelmeyer Meats. With every new customer transaction, the cashier is reminded of the founding principle that built one of the most well-known meat markets in the Kansas City area. Written below the charcoaled outline of a butcher’s smile are the words, “The first hunk of meat you sell is yourself.”

Bichelmeyer Meats opened their doors in 1946 as a retail meat counter and custom processor. Today, the family-based meat company provides the same services as well as low-level wholesale, sausage and lunch meat processing, and small private catering. Employees and family have also turned the meat company into a street-taco restaurant with made-to-order tacos and tamales offered every Saturday. Co-owner Joe Bichelmeyer said the diversity of products offered at the meat company is a testament to their ability to adapt their products for consumers.

52 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2018

Joe Bichelmeyer, along with his wife Marty and his brother Jim, ranch an hour south of their Kansas City-based meat retail business.

“Our target market is anyone that wants to buy the very best of fresh meat products that you can feel comfortable eating,” Bichelmeyer said. He said to not blame the meat itself if you’ve been disappointed in the taste and flavor of the cut you selected from the grocery store shelf. “It’s not because it’s not good meat. It’s because it hasn’t been merchandised properly,” the co-owner said. “It’s harvested one day, fabricated the next day and is shipped and on the retail shelf within four days of slaughter. It’s offered to the public and it just hasn’t had a chance to bloom or age properly to be as flavorful and tender as it can be.” Bichelmeyer knows his local model is not new, but his butchery provides him an advantage over larger scale packers, wholesalers and grocery store counters. “We give meat the opportunity to be merchandised properly,” he said. “We have been fashionable so long that we are back in fashion again.” Red Meat, Red Genetics The meat market sources 50 percent of their beef for slaughter from their own commercial operation. Bichelmeyer Land and Cattle is owned by brothers Jim and Joe along with Joe’s wife, Marty, and is located an hour southwest of the Kansas City retail location near Williamsburg, Kansas. To continue to provide fresh, high-quality meat to their retail counter, the brothers made the switch to using Red Angus genetics three years ago.

Bichelmeyer is extremely pleased with the growth traits of the Red Angus calves and equally impressed with the breed-back performance of the cowherd.

“I chose to utilize Red Angus genetics because of the consistency in quality,” Bichelmeyer said. Through several years of work with the Farmland Industries Research and Development Farm, Bichelmeyer slaughtered 130 research steers of Red Angus base annually. “Those cattle were among the best cattle we would slaughter all year long,” Bichelmeyer said. “Within the other breeds of cattle that we either custom slaughtered or sorted for our own use, we would get random carcasses as good as those, but not as many on a consistent basis.” He said the strong genetics of Red Angus are visible in the size of the loin eye area, marbling and carcass weight. “All of those things are important to me as a meat man first and a cattleman second,” Bichelmeyer said.

American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2018 53

Meat Man First, Cattleman Second In addition to seeing the success of the Red Angus breed post-harvest, the family made the decision three years ago to incorporate Red Angus females into his commercial operation after selling half of their primarily Black Angus herd. “We bought 230 Red Angus females, predominantly bred heifers, and we calved them and noticed fewer instances of calving difficulties,” Bichelmeyer said. “We were extremely pleased with the way the calves grew through the growing season and then we were incredibly surprised with the breed-back performance of those cattle on our ranch.” Another opportunity to sell a large portion of their bred females arose again the following year, creating more space for Red Angus females on the ranch. The bred cattle on their operation are typically no less than 2 years old and no more than 5 years old before being sold. He said from a business perspective, they are still an appreciating asset. “They are just coming into their prime and are going to raise calves that are optimal size,” Bichelmeyer said. “It’s created a challenge for us in that we calve more heifers than the normal ranch, but it also gives us the opportunity to enjoy the sale of young, bred females.”

The Bichelmeyer family uses FCCP tags in all their yearlings to capitalize on market premiums for Red Angus-identified cattle.

Meat Man First, Cattleman Second The herd’s growth was not complete with just the acquisition of Red Angus females. After liquidating his 30 Black Angus bulls, Bichelmeyer was able to find a Red Angus producer within a 60-mile radius of the meat market, where he purchased the sires necessary to transition his operation to exclusively run red cattle. Taking his interest in the breed even further, Bichelmeyer’s is now using the Red Angus Feed Calf Certification Program yellow tag on all of their yearling calves to capitalize on market premiums. A Clear Business Model The Bichelmeyers were not born into the commercial cattle industry though. Soon after starting full time at the meat market, Bichelmeyer began leasing land and developing a small herd. As the herd became larger, he continued to purchase land and cattle, saying he prefers to be asset rich and cash poor. After selling their accumulated 400 acres to a developer 15 years ago, the Bichelmeyers purchased the current location of their commercial herd near Williamsburg, Kansas.

Meat Man First, Cattleman Second Bichelmeyer sees value in allowing customers to be a part of the production and processing stages, saying they are as unique as the animals they raise and must be respected accordingly. “We encourage our customers to come in during the time of the processing of their meats, whether it be beef or pork, and witness the transformation of the carcass to the little packages that they put in their freezer,” Bichelmeyer said. “There are no questions left unanswered when that happens.” The family also welcome tours to the ranch and meat company, engaging with visitors from industry groups, school districts and international exchanges. Regardless of age, Bichelmeyer values each individual’s question, concern or compliment with the same merit, and said interacting with the public is what he does best. “It’s a vocation that I grew into and dearly love because of the people I get to meet and serve on a daily basis,” he said. “Everyone is an individual and if you treat them as individuals and respect their wishes, you in turn get their respect and business.” ■

The Bichelmeyer family believes in merchandising their meat products properly, allowing time for the meat to bloom and age for optimal flavor and tenderness.

Hedge a Profit with Teamwork by Jared Wareham, Top Dollar Angus General Manager

“Besides buying really good bulls, what else can I do to make my ranch or cattle operation more profitable?” This is a common question and a great one. I think the answer is much simpler than we realize. Maintaining a profitable business is similar to achieving consistent success within any competitive sporting environment. Great teams will always trump individual efforts or even greatness. That observation can be easily applied to your marketing strategy. Who you select while drafting your cattle marketing and sales force will ultimately determine the level of success you attain. It’s not always about choosing the greatest individual talents. More often than not, long-term success can be found in constructing the “right” team. The right rep. The right seedstock supplier. The right value-added programs. Finding individuals that genuinely invest themselves into your success, both emotionally and through shear effort, will often times create that synergy needed to help you consistently be as profitable as you can be. Furthermore, their understanding of mutualistic success will be the lone dynamic that can ultimately tip the scales. When visiting about the Top Dollar program, some of you have begun to hear me say, “The work truly begins once we have completed the genetic verification process.” That is a fact. I believe that is what separates our team from the pack. We are so much more than just a num-

ber or a score. Our vision is based around helping others. That mission starts with understanding the value of connecting people to people and the importance of working within a network of teammates all leveraged for your success.

seedstock producer, an extra layer of marketing assistance for the reps, and additional “advanced scouting” for feeders. We strive to be team builders, helping those engaged in bringing long-term profit to your beef business inevitable.

It is our job to bring service and resourcefulness to the table. Whether you have cattle to sell or are in search of cattle to buy, our logo not only represents a distinct standard of genetic quality, but also signals a level of comfort that can be expected by knowing we are always there to support. Top Dollar Angus is an extension of service for the

Profit isn’t something that can be solely determined by a score. That score represents potential. Execution and communication are what turn that potential into reality. Don’t just build a team. Surround yourself with the right teammates, so that when it’s time to market that next set of feeders, your profit has already been hedged. ■
