JRA Equips Youth to Advocate for Breed, Agriculture

How exciting is this? The Junior Red Angus Association of America recently announced hitting 1,000 members! We often discuss member growth and the number of cows enrolled in THR but we don’t normally touch on the number of junior members, much less the rate of growth in JRA.

I believe great leadership and guidance play an important role. Junior programs coordinator Kim Heller is outstanding at advising these young breed leaders. Thank you, Kim, for all that you do. I’d also like to thank Raymond Prescott for his service on the RAAA board as well as chair of the Junior Activities Committee. Raymond was incredibly committed to our breed’s youth. Thank you, Raymond, for your unselfish service and dedication to the breed and JRA. The mission of the JAC is, “To equip and prepare all JRA stakeholders to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture.” Thoughts of a junior association might be a group of kids at a field day or a stock show, or maybe playing some games and having a pizza party. But JRA is so much more than that. These young people are taking part in regional and national leadership activities, including: • Socials and educational events at regional stock shows • A junior get together with an industry education piece at the national show at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo • A field day with an affiliate • Attend the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show to help connect the JRA with the industry • Annual Young Stockman’s Program at Iowa State in March 2019 • JRA Round-Up in the Texas and New Mexico region

6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2018

Junior members have many opportunities across the nation to get involved and make relationships that last a lifetime. JRA also offers multiple social media platforms that allow young people to connect and engaged through the year in between events. As adult stakeholders of RAAA, our responsibility is to enable our youth to thrive and excel to their best selves by investing in them. We can show them that their development and education in the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture is important to us. We can do this by investing in our youth on a local and regional basis by volunteering to help put on events that educate and develop those young people closest to us. One of the easiest ways to assist and impact our juniors across the country is to pledge a sponsorship to JRA. Our JRA board does a fabulous job of fundraising with items donated for the silent auction held annually at the National Red Angus Convention. They also kick off a sponsorship campaign at convention to help put on the many events for Red Angus youth across the country. An added bonus is that your JRA sponsorship goes through the Red Angus Foundation Inc. so your donation is considered tax free. If you want more information on assisting the JRA, I encourage you to contact Kim Heller for more details. I encourage you to get out there and support the juniors of our association in whichever way you feel led. At the end of the day, it’s our job to help create good young people for the future not only for the Red Angus breed and the agriculture industry, but also for the welfare of our country. Don’t forget, this is also the generation that will be in charge of taking care of us when we are old. Invest in their future! ■

Red Angus Leadership Takes Many Forms

The Red Angus Association of America provides leadership to the industry in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Two less traditional areas include 1) the role women play within our breed, and 2) through industrybenefiting research, like our recently released publication on the shrinking production of Select beef.

Women and Red Angus One of the editorial focuses of this ARA issue is “Women in Agriculture,” and, from the very beginning, the Red Angus breed has enjoyed and supported female involvement at all levels. From RAAA’s wellknown founding member, Sal Forbes, to three presidents (Linda Anderson, Kelli Brown and Kim Ford), to a long list of female Board of Directors, the involvement of women in key positions at Red Angus has been a beneficial constant. These ladies have made – and are still making – a tremendous contribution to the growth and success of the breed. They deserve our thanks and gratitude. And let’s not forget the many dozens of past and present female RAAA staff members that helped keep the breed advancing for more than 65 years. A rough estimate puts the female-to-male count at more than 3-to-1 across the decades. An even larger number of women directly involved in Red Angus are those raising and marketing registered seedstock throughout the U.S. and Canada. They do a great job, and it is guaranteed that without these hard-working women who wear many different hats, the breed would not be enjoying its current success. Yes, Red Angus has long been ”out front” in actively involving women in leadership positions, and the real beneficiary is the breed itself. Red Angus Publishes Research on Phasing Out Select Beef Phasing Out Select Grade Beef is the title of a recently released research paper resulting from a joint effort between RAAA, Top Dollar Angus, Inc. and Anipro/Xtrafomance Feeds. This work, which is worthwhile reading for every cattle producer, tracks

12 American Red Angus Magazine n December 2018

and explains the progress our industry is making to improve quality grade and consumer acceptance. Did you know that Select grade beef production has been more than cut in half during the past 11 years and that all segments of the beef business worked together to accomplish this amazing feat? It’s true, and genetics have been an important driver of this trend. Offering the consumer less Select and more Choice and Prime cuts has had a positive impact on overall beef demand. Listening to consumers and giving them more of what they want is a great way to grow the beef business. Select grade beef consistently sells at a discount to Choice, Upper 2/3 Choice and Prime. Thus, it should be expected that producers would work to reduce the output of Select beef. Phasing Out Select Grade Beef offers a detailed explanation of this important industry trend, and discusses how Red Angus has played a growing role. Select beef has not been discussed too much in the industry media, but that may change with the publication of this research. Here are a couple of excerpts from the report: “Demand for high-quality beef has become well entrenched in today’s beef business. No self-respecting steakhouse hangs a sign out front saying they feature Select grade beef, while those serving upper 2/3 Choice and Prime are proud to make public proclamations about the quality of their beef.” “During this 10-year time span [2006-07 to 2016-17], the annualized value of Choice beef increased from $17.1 to $31.2 billion, up 83 percent in nominal terms. The simultaneous change in Select beef values was from $11 to $7.5 billion, representing a 32 percent decline.” This report can be accessed at RedAngus.org. Read it to understand how the industry is working to reduce Select grade beef production, find out what lies ahead, and learn what this trend could mean for your cattle business. n

Marketing Update

by Nolan Woodruff, REDSPro and Marketing Specialist

Functionality and Conformation are Vital in Your Bull Investment Temperatures have dropped as have the leaves on the trees, marking the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. We all know that this changing weather means bull sale season is quickly approaching, and it is time to ramp up bull power by making an investment to continue improving the genetics in your herd.

Bull selection can – and should be – a detailed and lengthy process that includes research and evaluation of the animals’ EPDs and pedigree well in advance of sale day. After you have spent sufficient time going through volumes of catalogs and looking at videos online, you have probably narrowed the field to a handful of bulls that you believe are going to be a match for your herd. Once you have made these initial selections on paper, it’s time to move in closer for an eyes-on inspection. Many great livestock evaluators would agree that, “structural soundness and quality animals begin at the ground with good feet and correct angles.” Visual inspection is very important in the selection of a herd bull that is going to have such a large impact on your operation and especially your future replacement females. Being able to evaluate the animal while it is roaming the pen right in front of you is extremely valuable, because you can see things

that EPDs cannot tell you. Structural correctness, flexibility and balance are hard to quantify, but are so important in the proper selection of your animal. The effective use of EPDs and pedigree information are important for the prediction of the performance of future calves from the selected sire. While you must do your homework prior to the day of the sale, the inperson visual evaluation of the bull is necessary to ensure structural soundness, balance and an overall favorable phenotype. Both processes are critical to the successful selection of the right animal for your herd. These two selection processes provide a more complete picture of the animal. Think about it this way. If you are going to purchase a pre-owned pickup, you look at the horsepower, torque and towing capacity online to make sure the vehicle will meet necessary requirements. By looking at the paperwork, you can make sure

each potential pickup will be appropriate and reduce the time you spend test driving the many vehicles available. However, to buy the right pickup you must also take the time to go to the dealership and look at the condition of the truck, make sure it rolls down the road smoothly, has good tires and a good bill of health. Although your pickup doesn’t reproduce to give you another vehicle, you aren’t going to throw money at something that won’t last or be worth what you are spending on it. Purchasing herd bulls is the same way; you want to make sure that you are spending money on quality, wellbuilt animals that are going to last. EPDs are important and time spent analyzing these numbers will reduce the list of potential animals that you need to visually screen, but even if the numbers are great, the foundation must be sound so the purchase will be worth the money and time. It is important to use EPDs and the phenotypic evaluation of the animal together to pick the sire that will best fit your operation. n

Member Services Bulletin Past-Due Accounts Face Inactivation Any account that has a past due balance over 120 days is subject to inactivation the first week of December. If you would like to continue to be an active member of the association, please take care of this ASAP. Report and Update Data Early Even with weekly EPD updates, it is still important to report data early! Once data is reported to RAAA it can take upwards of two weeks to receive new EPDs back from IGS based on the information members provide. This applies to weight updates, pedigree changes, ultrasound data, etc. This is now the standard operating time and cannot be altered. Inactivated Females Females that did not have a calf reported or a reason code for the Fall 2017 calf crop have been inactivated due to non-compliance with THR. If you have questions regarding a female that was inactivated, please contact the National Office with your questions. Sale Day Preparation We are on our second year of having the new database available during the sale season rush. It has allowed for several efficiencies, but should not be taken for granted. We ask that you please continue to prepare as soon as possible for your routine sale day requests. What you should ponder and consider now to start the process are as follows: Submit DNA Early - Submitting DNA samples early can eliminate some of the hectic time associated with sale day preparation. When utilizing DNA as a marketing tool, make sure to send in samples early to meet ALL deadlines. Results are returned to the National Office in 15 to 20 business days after being received from the lab. Changes to the animal’s parentage will be updated in the database before results are sent to the producer who submitted the sample.

One common question is, “Do I need to do DNA testing to make it easier on my buyers?” The answer is, “Yes.” Per the Rules and Regulations of the RAAA, there are many requirements that pertain to an animal’s registration status due to DNA requirements being met on sires, dams or even the calves themselves. The one that will most effect a producer buying animals from you now is that bulls being used as sires (regardless of AI or natural matings) will be required to have parentage on file for the offspring to reach a ‘R’ registration type.

Sale Catalog Data Extracts (SCDE) Requests – SCDEs are reports generated through REDSPro that provide all information on a given animal or group of animals. It includes a threegeneration pedigree, all EPDs, and raw data along with the adjusted values. Members no longer need to request RAAA staff pull their SCDEs. The option is available under the Herd Management Tab/ My Reports in REDSPro. • Ensure the TSUs are sealed completely by the red stopper with the sample, fluid and green ball inside. • Always align hair follicles and place them under the sticky film on a hair card. • Collect samples from relatively clean and dry areas of the animal. • After collections, store TSU samples at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.

• Only fill blood cards inside the printed circle and ensure they are dry before closing. • Do not submit a blood sample on any animal that was born a twin because of in utero cross contamination. Hair or TSU samples will yield accurate results. • Instead of pulling fine or small hair follicles on calves, try collecting blood or TSUs.

RAAA and IMI Global Join Forces to Support Cattle Producers An agreement between the Red Angus Association of America and IMI Global, a division of Where Food Comes From, Inc., will provide convenient access into natural and non-hormone treated cattle programs to producers who utilize the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program. Gary Fike, RAAA director of commercial marketing, said, “IMI Global has long been recognized for its industry-leading work in verifying cattle for Verified Natural and NHTC programs in beef cattle operations. These designations allow producers to market their cattle to feedyards and packers with the assurance that all USDA requirements have been fully satisfied through enrollment and audit processes. Consumers are demanding more information from the production chain about the beef they are eating. This often includes source, age, genetics, hu-

mane handling and how cattle are fed and managed.” Fike added that because the FCCP tag is already USDA compliant for age, source and genetically verified cattle (at least 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines), producers who enroll calves in FCCP can use the yellow tag as the identifier for Red Angus and IMI Global programs. In the past, FCCP users who wished to enroll their calves into a Verified Natural or NHTC program often needed an additional identifier from IMI. However, with this new partnership, cattlemen and women can be assured that the FCCP tag itself can be the qualified identifier. “Many, if not all, natural and NHTC programs are now requiring electronic identification tags to be used rather than just a panel, or visual tag. The ‘nested’ set of

both the visual FCCP tag with EID is $3 per head,” said Chessie Mitchell, RAAA tag programs coordinator. “Those who wish to enroll in these NHTC and Verified Natural programs will still need to complete the enrollment paperwork through IMI Global. The RAAA does not enroll and audit cattle for that part of the program – IMI Global is the expert in that area.” Superior Livestock Auction data collected from video markets over the past eight years (2010-17) shows that Red Angus calves enrolled in the FCCP bring a $2.80per-hundredweight premium, on average, over Red Angus calves not enrolled in the program. The average weight of calves in the data set was 600 pounds, which equates to $16.80 per head in added value. Combined with premiums paid for Verified Natural or NHTC-verified calves, the FCCP can add a lot of value to a producer’s calf crop.

Red Angus Association of America Launches Creative Venture The Red Angus Association of America recently launched Red Angus Creative, a new media services division of the association aimed at enabling cattle producers to reach more potential customers while also increasing awareness of the Red Angus breed across the beef industry. Red Angus Creative will offer a wide variety of media services to producers including multi-pronged social media management, social media consulting, writing and press piece creation and distribution, and website development and maintenance. This new venture from RAAA will provide tools for producers to help identify and reach their target audience in order to build their brand awareness and reach more potential customers. Sixty-six percent of the U.S. population uses social media on one, or many, plat-

forms. Producers who overlook the opportunity to utilize social media and other digital platforms for advertising purposes are missing invaluable opportunities to reach potential customers. In a very competitive marketplace, producers should investigate every available outlet to create awareness about their brand and operation. “When it comes to brand awareness, virtual real estate is not something to be overlooked. Gone are the days where a few print ads in regional publications were sufficient for promoting a ranch’s bull sale. To really stand out in the

30 American Red Angus Magazine n December 2018

crowd, producers need to have an effective digital marketing plan in place, that also complements print advertising, in order to reach more potential customers, said Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA director of communications. Red Angus Creative is accepting clients from all segments of the beef industry. For more information on Red Angus Creative, to set up a consultation or to schedule services, visit RedAngus.org or contact Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA director of communications, at brandi@redangus.org or 785-448-0239. n

The Other Side of the Plate – Leading a Healthy Lifestyle by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator

The instant communication of today’s technology keeps people constantly ‘plugged in,’ adding stress to day-to-day life. Scheduled down time helps refuel the body, mind and soul. 38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2018

Women in general – but ranch women in particular – wear a lot of hats. Wife, mother, daughter, ranch hand, veterinarian, AI technician, gate opener, bookkeeper, chute boss, wrangler, head cook and bottle washer are just some of the roles that modern lady cow bosses cover every day. Then throw in responsibilities at church, community, school, 4-H and FFA, other volunteer obligations – and often times a town job – and the hours of the day are depleted. To cover all these bases, ranch women regularly place their physical, mental and spiritual health on the back burner while they ensure their family and cattle-working crew are well fed, the cowherd’s nutritional needs are balanced and the calves are up-to-date on their vaccinations. Kirsten Angell, owner of Link 4 Nutrition in Gove, Kansas, is a registered and licensed dietician and certified diabetes educator. She believes it’s time to address this lifestyle model and bring balance into the lives of ranch women and their families. “Women shouldn’t feel guilty or selfish about taking care of their own health,” said Angell. “I like to think of it as the oxygen-mask scenario – put on your own mask first, so you are able to care for others.” Angell shared her message to women at the National Red Angus Convention in September, but it’s a topic for the entire family. “Most of us know a lot about ranching,” she said, “but I feel it is important to understand ‘the other side of the plate,’ meaning the nutritional side of the beef we produce. “I think lifestyles have become more stressful with the electronic age. In some ways, technology has made life easier but all the different methods of instant communication mean people are always ‘on’ or ‘plugged in.’ Plus, life is extremely busy which leads to emotional eating and consuming more convenience foods. Overall, I

Kirsten A. Angell, RD, LD, CDE

feel there are more expectations placed on people in society.” Angell continued, “For ag women, life can be even more challenging on a mental, emotional and spiritual level. It’s a balancing act to take care of their family, help outside and cover responsibilities on the business-side of ranching. Even if women can schedule their own time for self-care to refuel mentally or spiritually, they are often interrupted when someone needs urgent help – or the cows get out.”

Ranch women not only care for their families, but tend to their livestock's health and well-being, too.

American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2018 39

The Other Side of the Plate – Leading a Healthy Lifestyle Plan for Success Engaging two of her passions – ranching and health – Angell feels called to promote the truth about agriculture while helping rural Americans live healthier lifestyles. Through group presentations, she is effectively able to reach more people and share her message of wellness. “Our ranches are a business,” said Angell. “We have business plans and set measurable goals. We should do the same for our health and well-being. One of my favorite quotes is from Benjamin Franklin, ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.’“ With planning as the first step to finding balance, Angell recommends scheduling time for exercise, relaxation and reflection. “Put self-care into your schedule like other appointments and try to choose a time when you are less likely to be interrupted. A lot of people

Women wear a lot of hats on the ranch and often don’t schedule time to take care of themselves.

schedule their workout in the morning but not everyone is a morning person. Find the time that is best for you – when you are most likely to do it.” She also encouraged setting SMART goals that are: S – specific, M – measurable, A – attainable, R – realistic, and T – time specific.

“Know specifically what you are going to do. When a new activity becomes a habit – something you do every day without thinking about it – then add another adjustment,” said Angell. “Make small, healthy lifestyle changes that eventually result in a big difference, like walking for 10 to 15 minutes after a meal.”

Merry Christmas to All!

The Other Side of the Plate – Leading a Healthy Lifestyle What’s for Supper? Exercise isn’t the only planning Angell recommends. “Fifty percent of America’s food goes to waste because of poor planning. Make an appointment with yourself to plan your menus, then grocery shop. Setting aside this time and making meal planning a priority not only results in decreased food waste, but allows for more nutritious meals. Plus, it can save meal-prep time.” Angell advocated for eating whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible. “Processed foods are causing a lot of health and weight problems. It may take a few minutes longer to prepare a meal from scratch but the health benefits are worth it.” She recommends shopping the perimeter of the grocery store where unprocessed foods are stocked, enjoying fresh produce from the garden and selecting frozen rather than canned veg-

search supports this method as a tool to help with smaller serving sizes,” said Angell. “Our food environment has changed and that affects our eating and nutrition habits. Restaurant and fastfood meal sizes have doubled over the past 20 years. Consider sharing an entrée when you go out.” Ranch women from around the nation tuned in to Angell’s message of living a healthy lifestyle during the 2018 National Red Angus Convention.

etables. She does say eating canned vegetables is better than not eating vegetables at all, though. Recipes containing nutrition information are usually healthy and easy to find online, as are meal suggestions at sites such as www.shawnee.k-state.edu/health-nutrition/delicious_meals_in_minutes. One method for portion control is to eat a meal from an 8-inch salad plate rather than a 13-inch dinner plate. “Tons of re-

Mindful, intuitive eating is one of the biggest changes Angell recommends. “Every time you go to put food in your mouth, ask yourself, ‘Am I hungry?’ If the answer is ‘No,’ don’t eat it, no matter if it is healthy or not.” She also recommends 20 to 30 minutes to eat a meal, allowing the stomach to send a message to the brain that it is satiated. “When we are trying to drop a few pounds, we typically restrict ourselves at meal time, trying to cut back, but then we get hungry and snack too much,” said Angell. She suggests logging food to assist with mindful eating.

And of course, hydrate by drinking plenty of water each day.

“If you want to improve your personal health, fitness and mental well-being, it has to be a priority, a choice. Change is hard and it takes a lot of self-reflection. The Power of Sleep “Sleep is very important,” said Angell, “and allows our bodies and minds time to recover and rejuvenate.” She said everyone’s sleep requirements are different, but health professionals recommend seven to nine hours each night and to keep a regular sleep schedule. “Avoid caffeine and screen time – television, computers and smartphones – at bedtime because the blue light emitted by electronics makes our brains think it is daytime,” she added. Other forms of relaxation include meditation and prayer, yoga and even deep breathing activities.

Strength exercises and stretching are important to physical and mental health.

Choices Not Excuses “If you want to make changes in your health, timing is important,” said Angell. “Making sure you have time in-

“Choose one or two helpful ideas you want to work on to become a healthier you. When they become a habit, then add one or two more. Make gradual lifestyle changes,” concluded Angell. “And if the timing isn’t right for you to make changes, love the skin you’re in and have a positive outlook. God created us and if we talk negative about ourselves, we are talking negative about God’s creation.” ■

Walk a Mile in Their Boots by Jared Wareham, Top Dollar Angus General Manager

Who really deserves the premiums when cattle are sold, if any are there to be captured? I’ve had some thoughts recently regarding this matter that may be worth consideration.

The niche market for bred heifers has really emerged over the last decade or so. Like anything else, it continues to evolve, becoming more diverse with internal segmentation. The demand for genetically superior bred heifers, that can be dropped seamlessly into any ranching system that is focused on producing grid-dominating feeders, has steadily increased. However, have the commercial herds buying these heifers left those producing them out in the cold with regards to back-end premiums?

ity” top-dollar cattle at the time you purchased them. You took all the risk from that time forward. You suffered all losses due to calving difficulties, health-related matters and open cows. You incurred all feed, labor, land and capital equipment expense, as well as, depreciation. And, you were subject to the “hilly” nature of our dynamic cattle markets. With all that being said, if they hadn’t done their job and worked hard to produce those good cattle, you wouldn’t be getting that premium.

Shouldn’t a share of any premium received, when selling feeders out of these elite females, go to the producer and not the owner? After all, they did an exemplary job of producing genetically superior bred heifers that were capable of raising premium-eligible calves. All the little things that matter and investments to quality were made. Seems logical, right?

Hopefully, you are beginning to see where I’m headed with this column. Occasionally, I hear comments from producers regarding their desire for a larger share of the premiums their calves may generate when sold and harvested as fat cattle. It’s easy to get tunnel vision from being locked or isolated into a single segment of the industry. It can create a skewed appraisal of the value equations that exist in the other parts of our industry. I’ve been there. We work really hard to

Granted, you most likely paid a fair market value for “premium qual-

breed great cattle and, as a result, tend to build a healthy sense of pride about it. However, that can block our ability to consider all the variables effecting other segments along the value chain. I’m not trying to unjustly defend the cattle-feeding industry, or support one segment over another. More or less, I’m trying to explain the path they walk along the beef chain, through our eyes. None of us would ever dream of sharing our calf sales premium made from a set of purchased bred heifers with the producers that raised them. Ever! Therefore, consider those same factors when contemplating the desire to receive greater premiums from a calf crop that you had no risk or expense in once they left your possession. The only way to get more of that value or premium is to own all or part of them through harvest. At that time, you are definitely due your fair share of the premium made … or, the loss incurred. ■

Catch-A-Calf Captures Opportunities with Red Angus Steers by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator

In today’s fast-paced world, boots-on-the-ground programs have often gone by the wayside in exchange for flashy, technology-driven experiences. One program, however, focuses on the grass roots of cattle production and management, and has withstood the test of time for more than 80 years, enriching the lives of over 3,000 kids – and countless sponsors and parents – during its tenure.

The National Western Stock Show’s Catch-A-Calf program started in 1935 when 10 boys caught 10 sponsored calves. The program is still going strong and now awards 40 calves each year to 4-H members from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming. NWSS brags that Catch-A-Calf is its longest-running educational program of practical beef cattle management. Clancy Anderson, NWSS livestock coordinator, facilitates the program. “Catch-A-Calf is very rewarding and it’s about so much more than just the steer project,” she said. “The kids make lasting connections with their sponsors

and build lifelong friendships with the other exhibitors. In some cases, the Catch-A-Calf program has opened the door to agriculture career opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t have been available.” This year’s class will convene in Denver at the NWSS from Jan. 1113, 2019, all with Red Angus-sired steers in tow. “We like to purchase all the calves from one ranch so they are consistent in quality and weight,” said Anderson. This year’s steers all hailed from Wagonhound Land and Livestock Co. of Douglas, Wyoming. “When we toured the Wagonhound, we were very impressed with the op-

Each year during the NWSS rodeo, 40 kids successfully catch and halter proxy calves to earn a spot in the Catch-A-Calf program.

Catch-A-Calf Captures Opportunities with Red Angus Steers

Catching a Calf Like its name implies, kids must successfully catch and halter a calf in a special competition, then feed and care for their assigned steer from May to January when they return to NWSS to exhibit him as a market steer. Over the course of the program, participants maintain management and financial records, submit progress reports to NWSS and build a relationship with their sponsor(s).

Prior to the event, interested 4-H members between the ages of 12 and 18 complete an online form explaining why they want to participate in the program and describing their background. Their county Extension agent must verify the applicant has adequate facilities to raise and handle a calf. Once their application is approved, they are eligible to compete in January’s calf-catch event in the arena during several of the rodeos at NWSS. Overall, 60 applicants vie for 40 steers during the once-in-alifetime opportunity. Successful calf catchers are paired with a sponsor at a special breakfast in March and get to take home their calf in early May. Sponsor Connections More than 50 sponsors financially support the program to cover the purchase price of the steer calves. The sponsor’s involvement in the program is often further reaching as they become acquainted with their young cattleman or woman at the March breakfast and through their monthly updates. “The sponsors take a genuine interest in their Catch-A-Calf kid,” explained Anderson. “The kids

write monthly update letters sharing what is going on in their lives, how their steer is doing and what extracurricular activities they are participating in. The communication often expands to sending photos, texting, phone conversations and personal site visits from the sponsors.” Anderson can attest to the power of this networking opportunity. She herself was a Catch-A-Calf participant in high school and her sponsor was then CEO of NWSS, Pat Grant. Now in her fourth year facilitating the program, she is thankful to give back to the program which impacted her career choices and opportunities. “The impact of the sponsor-participant connection through the Catch-A-Calf program expands well past the few months of the program,” she said. “Our sponsors hail from all walks of life – from retired couples, ranchers and lawyers, to service groups like Kiwanis and Elks, to powerful energy and construction businesses. They are truly interested in these

young agriculturists and want to make an impact on their future. Building these connections at an early age sets a strong foundation down the road.” Hard Work Pays Off Catching a calf and halter breaking their new steer is just the beginning of the time and work commitment these young cattlemen and women invest in the project. They keep detailed management and financial records, communicate with their sponsors and submit a report to NWSS each month. Participants are encouraged to exhibit their steer at county and state fairs, the NILE and other regional shows and clinics. At the NWSS, the steers compete for production, quality of fitting and live evaluation. The exhibitor is judged on showmanship, their record book and a personal interview with a panel of judges that includes a short prepared speech. Exhibitors decorate their stall area with poster boards of project photos and appreciation for their sponsors.

Catch-A-Calf Captures Opportunities with Red Angus Steers “Show day is exciting and different than a typical show,” said Anderson. “All the kids enter the stadium and tie their calves around the arena to watch and cheer on their fellow Catch-A-Calf exhibitors.” They compete for showmanship honors and then the steers are live evaluated for quality and conformation. “Each exhibitor’s scores from the different events – record keeping, production, sponsor relations, interview, showmanship and live evaluation – are added together for their final score,” said Anderson. “The top two exhibitors are named Grand and Reserve Champion earning the right to sell their steers in the NWSS Junior Livestock Auction right behind the champions of all other species, usually for a sub-

Better Decisions Lead to Better Outcomes by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement

The goal of any successful selection program is to continually improve from one generation to the next in as many economically relevant traits as possible. The best way to accomplish this goal is by having a detailed breeding objective. These objectives should focus on traits that are most important to your operation. By setting clear and concise goals it allows for the decisions that are made to achieve the short- and long-term goals of that enterprise.

One of the services offered by RAAA is the Herd Improvement Initiative which can be found at redangus.org/genetics/herd-improvement-initiative/. This form helps with the development of breeding objectives as well as identifying which EPDs will help achieve those goals. When the goals are focused on improving genetic merit of the herd, the most effi-

cient method to make progress is through the use of EPDs. The reason for this is that EPDs predict the additive genetic merit of the animal. The additive genetic merit of an animal is the genetic material that is passed from one generation to the next. With the release of the BOLT genetic evaluation, RAAA now has the most accurate estimates available to make selection decisions. Another added advantage to the

BOLT system is now genetic evaluations run on a weekly basis. By having this ability, each animals EPDs are calculated using the most recently available performance and genomic information on each animal. What this advantage allows for is the ability to make selection decisions with more real-time information than what was previously available when genetic evaluations were conducted less frequently.

Better Decisions Lead to Better Outcomes These selection decisions become very important as we think about the longterm effects of those choices. Take for example the breeding decisions that are made today can have effects for many years into the future. A generation interval in cattle is the amount of time that it takes to replace one generation to the next. When generation interval is long this means that females or males are generally retained in the herd until older ages. As we think about this time it quickly becomes clear how important those selection decisions become. One of the challenging factors to making decisions is that many times these choices are made on younger animals that generally have lower accuracy EPDs. One method to overcome this limitation is through the use of genomic testing. These tests allow for an improvement in accuracy even before an

YW, the number-of-progeny equivalents is 21, 22 and 24, respectively. While the new analysis is able to capture a lot of information from the genomic test, having data on those animals for each of the traits is still vitally important. The marker information is used simultaneously with pedigree and performance information to make predictions. Having all three sources of information allows for the most accurate and predictive EPDs from the analysis. animal has the ability to produce any progeny. In the IGS analysis, the amount of information that is garnered from a genotype test is quantified in what is known as Progeny Equivalents. This measure simply looks at how many progeny records would be needed to achieve a similar level of accuracy compared to an animal that has only been genotyped. For the traits BW, WW and

Establishing a clear and well-defined breeding objective is the first step to achieving genetic improvement in any herd. Using the most current technologies will also facilitate for these decisions to be made with the best and most current information on each animal. Using this information will allow for better informed decisions that will be beneficial many years in the future. â–

Scholarships

JRA Update by Madison Adams, JRA President

Educational and Travel Opportunities for Juniors The Red Angus Association of America is pleased to award a minimum of five $1,000 college scholarships through the support of the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. The scholarships are open to graduating high school seniors and current college freshmen with definite plans to enroll in post-secondary education in the fall of the application year. Applications are due by Feb. 15. Scholarship awards are not limited to one year; last year’s recipients may submit a scholarship application for the current year. The link to the scholarship application will be available at redangus.org/junior-red-angus/programsevents/ by Jan. 15. There are a few travel scholarships open to all juniors who wish to travel for national events. The Heather Presser Memorial scholarship, worth $500, is offered to assist with the cost of Young Stockman’s Program and/or Round-Up. This scholarship is in loving memory of Troy and Annette

Presser’s daughter, Heather, who was tragically taken from her family in an ATV accident in 2012. This scholarship allows Heather’s memory to live on in the Red Angus industry. Any member wishing to apply for this scholarship must complete and submit the application by the respective event’s registration deadline. Another scholarship offered by JRA is the Beef Industry Education Scholarship Program. This scholarship provides financial support for members to participate in industry activities or events that will help towards the member’s success in the industry. Applications for this scholarship are accepted each quarter for review and can reach up to $200 to put towards the event. Scholarship recipients are required to promote the Red Angus breed when appropriate and submit an article for publication that includes several pictures and quotes that review the experience within 15 days following the event. All scholarship applications and details can be found at redangus.org/juniorred-angus/programs-events/.

Young Stockmans’ Program The 2019 Young Stockman’s Program will be held March 1-3, 2019, at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The Young Stockman’s Program works to provide a hands-on learning experience to JRA members. The 2019 event will take an in-depth look at the handling, health and nutrition of cattle, especially related to the feedlot and meats. One of the highlights will be connecting with the LiveWiRED project, as we will be looking at their carcasses. It is a great weekend event for the juniors to learn and expand their knowledge, as well as have fun. The 2019 agenda will be available after Jan. 1, and registration for the event is due Jan. 25. 62 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2018

Seedstock cows run like commercial cows. One of the elite cow groups to sell anywhere this year. Please contact us for more details on the specific cows selling in each group. We are expanding our reach throughout the U.S. and providing high quality Red Angus genetics to the commercial beef industry in many new areas. We are actively looking for cooperating team members in the central plains, southeast, southwest and northwest United States. Please contact us to discuss marketing options for Red Angus and Red Angus influenced genetics.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from RAFI! by Patsy Krause, RAFI Fund Raiser

It’s hard to believe another year has passed! The focus of the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. over the past year continued to be to strengthen our name recognition and donor cultivation in support of our mission. RAFI's mission is to provide support that enhances the Red Angus breed and its stakeholders through investments in leadership development, scientific research and educational opportunities. RAFI is under the leadership of Board members Frank Wedel, chairperson, Chuck Feddes, Blake Angell, Kelli Brown, Dr. Bob Hough, Steve Ford and Steve Newberry. Under their leadership RAFI has had a busy year. To keep our membership better informed, RAFI developed a RAFI Sponsorship Brochure. It has functioned as our main marketing piece. The brochure was mailed to all RAAA members who had purchased five bulls or more. The brochure continues to be the outline for donor recognition and development. It is used to promote RAFI and get our mission into everyone's everyday conversations. The brochure is mailed to all new RAAA members and is distributed wherever and whenever possible. Also during the past year, RAFI adopted the practice of recognizing and thanking our donors monthly in the ARA Magazine. In the July/August ARA issue we publicly thank and recognize all contributors to RAFI. To strengthen RAFI name recognition we have had a presence in each of the monthly ARA Maga-

zines in the form of articles explaining what RAFI is, tax ramifications, advantages to charitable giving, stewardship and donor recognition. Working with the RAAA Board and staff, RAFI challenged all Board members to make a contribution to RAFI sometime during the year. All contribution amounts were confidential and appreciated. It was not the amount of the contributions that was the goal as much as it was the endorsement from all in the leadership positions. We had 100 percent participation from the RAFI Board and significant participation from the RAAA Board. This challenge gave us the opportunity to thank Board members for their monetary contributions as well as their donations of time and service. The RAFI website was updated during the past year and it was combined with the new and improved RAAA website, RedAngus.org. Having RAFI as part of the RAAA website shows more alliance between the two organizations.

66 American Red Angus Magazine ■ December 2018

One of RAFI's three designated funds is set up to benefit the Junior Red Angus Association of Amercia. During the past year, the JRA group designated RAFI to receive all their contributions. Using the RAFI 501(c)(3) tax status to receipt all the JRA donations allows better service to their donors and strengthens the RAFI name recognition. All contributions received for JRA are held in a fund restricted to the support of JRA's annual budget. Finally, RAFI along with their fundraising partners, enjoyed a successful fundraising auction held during the 65th Annual National Red Angus Convention, Reds Rising Over the Northern Plains, held Sept. 12-14 in Watertown, South Dakota. The event was held at the beautiful Redlin Art Center and featured many donated art items and the Pick of the Herd donation of any female from the R.A. Brown Ranch. RAFI continues to work with its partners in the beef industry by investing in our JRA members and providing funding for research and breed development, but we need your help. Please consider a gift that will help the continued growth of the Red Angus breed. Please make arrangements for your RAFI contribution today. Wishing you all the season's blessings! ■

If you have questions about RAFI or need assistance with planning, please contact me.
