Essentials for Your Next Herd Sire Selecting herd bulls is an important task for commercial cattlemen since it charts the course for their herd. Few management decisions will have greater impact than the bulls introduced to this system. Many factors must be considered when evaluating potential herd sires and numerous tools are available to assist in this decision. Finding the right bull will depend on many variables but here are two essentials that your next herd sire should possess. Builds maternal strength Most cow-calf producers raise their own replacements, thus herd bulls must have a positive contribution to the herd’s maternal foundation. Finding bulls that produce functional females for your location is key. Red Angus cows have proven to adapt to a wide range of production environments which has earned them respect across the nation. They are truly the beef industry’s most-favored female. These dynamic brood matrons are the result of many years and numerous breeders who believed that beef production efficiency could be improved. Since its inception, the Red Angus Association of America has focused on methods to improve commercial beef production. The foundation for the beef industry is a brood cow that profitably converts low-value feedstuffs into a high-value product. RAAA equips breeders with tools to identify cattle with superior maternal traits. Red Angus bulls will sire daughters that will excel in your herd and, if you have extra heifers to sell, they will command a premium on sale day. Creates calf crop value When evaluating bull options, their impact on calf crop value deserves attention. Clearly cattle feeders are looking for uniform, healthy cattle that will gain efficiently and have high grid performance. The bull selection process must begin will a thorough cowherd evaluation. What are your herd’s strengths and weaknesses? In addition, the target market options should be established with contingency plans.

6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

It is important to remember that you do not have to buy the one “perfect bull” because many bulls will have the traits you are looking for to make improvements to your herd. Focus on buying bulls that move your herd toward your goals. Superior Livestock Auction data illustrates that Red Angus cattle have the suite of traits to meet market demands. Red Angus steers consistently sell at the top or above the market when tagged with a Feeder Calf Certification Program tag. The yellow Red Angus tag tells buyers that the cattle are at least 50 percent Red Angus, and verifies their group age and who raised them. The enrollment in FCCP is growing rapidly and it is the industry’s longest-running and best-recognized genetic, age and source program. As mentioned before, Red Angus heifers are in high demand and typically top most sales. Cattle health can be addressed by management but cattle with poor dispositions become stressed and have lower performance. Docility can become an economically important trait and Red Angus cattle are known for calm dispositions. Buyers will appreciate their attitudes and performance. Bull selection has – and will continue to be – a very important decision. It takes intense effort to establish your needs and to find bulls that fit the job. Choosing a breed is part of the process and each breed has its value. The only major beef breed that has sustained growth over the last 25 years is Red Angus and it’s because we have never wavered on our commitment to improve commercial beef production. Our goal is to continue to pursue innovation that enhances beef system value from pasture to the consumer. If you are currently using Red Angus genetics, thank you for your confidence and your business. If you are not using Red Angus, we invite you to give us a try and see why cattlemen are so excited about our breed. ■

High-Profit Producers Exhibit Common Practices It was Cattle-Fax in the mid-1990s that first identified several important management practices frequently found among highprofit producers. Through extensive surveys of cow-calf farms and ranches located across the U.S., their research showed the most profitable operations exhibited 1) below-average cow-carrying costs, 2) above-average reproductive rates, and 3) average to above-average weaning weights. Managers of these operations were found to be “cost conscious” but they did not short their cows on nutrition. They simply found less-expensive methods to keep their cows fed appropriately and in good body condition year around. Good nutrition helped them maintain favorable reproductive rates, typically averaging 2 to 4 percentage points higher than their lower-profit peers. Weaning weights were not found to be much above average. Rather they tended to be average or modestly higher (even to +25 pounds) compared to those from the entire group of survey respondents. A particularly intriguing discovery was made over several years of surveys relating to the three areas in which these lowcost/high-profit operators actually spent more than their higher-cost/low-profit counterparts. That’s right, low-cost producers spent more on pasture, herd health and genetics. They had obviously determined certain aspects of the cow-calf business are so important that cutting corners is ill-advised.

Pasture/Grazing High-profit ranchers grazed their cows more months of the year, spending more on pasture, but less on winter feed. Their cows, on average, spent one to two more months out foraging versus receiving harvested feeds. Not surprisingly, the additional money they spent per cow on pasture expenses was more than offset by reduced winter feed outlays, producing a net savings over the course of a year. They clearly had a plan that reduced overall feeding expenses, while still meeting nutritional needs of the cowherd. Keeping Cattle Healthy Herd health was also emphasized, with maintenance and prevention through a

12 American Red Angus Magazine n January 2019

strong vaccination program being an area where these producers spent more per cow and per pair. This practice contributed positively to their reproductive rates and calf weaning rates. Average weaning weights might have received a little benefit too. Good health is the cornerstone of efficient cattle and beef production. High-profit producers had that figured out and they managed accordingly.

Genetics Commercial bull buyers are always faced with the dilemma of how much to spend to get the genetics they need. Good bulls cost good money. Great bulls cost even more. There is no way around that, and high-profit producers make it a practice to invest what they need to spend for genetics that will move their programs ahead. They consistently paid more for bulls compared to low-profit producers, which makes a strong statement for their commitment to herd improvement. Conversely, “cheap” bull buyers, in the end, may be working against their own bottom line. Saving $500, $1,000 or even $1,500 on a bull purchase sounds good, but it does not pencil out well if that bull costs the operation three to five times as much over the next several years (even more if retained heifers are considered). This is more than just theory. High-profit producers have proven this principle time and again in their own operations. They open their wallets a little wider when it comes to buying genetic inputs and, with today’s increased emphasis on valueadded marketing programs, some of which require genetic minimums, the need for superior genetic inputs has never been greater. What commercial producers receive from these high-profit practices is simply a reminder on how to manage toward superior financial results. Keep cow costs down, reproduction rates up and weaning weights at or above average for your region of the country. Easier said than done, no doubt. Doing so successfully will take some creative thinking, perhaps a new approach or two, and a commitment to following the road profit-minded ranchers have been traveling for decades. n

Marketing Update

by Gary D. Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing

Don’t Keep Your Red Angus Calves a Secret A lot has changed during the past four years. I began working for the RAAA in December of 2014. When I started, as it often is with any new job, there were a lot of things I didn’t know about the breed, about the cattle, about the people. But one thing I did know: Red Angus cattle were becoming more prevalent in the industry, and the breed was growing. I often tell people that Red Angus cattle are the industry’s greatest secret. It is no more evident than at the commercial level where Red Angus calves have commanded equal market footing with other breed types in both steers and heifers in load lot cattle sales. Some of you may still be facing some uphill battles in different regions of the country, but overall, calves provide premium prices. Through our work with Kansas State University, Merck Animal Health and Superior Livestock Auction, we know that Red Angus-sired steer calves bring the same money as their black counterparts. In the most recent data that we have, Red Angus steer calves at Superior sales from 2010-2018, brought an average price of $175.54 per hundredweight, while Angus-sired calves brought $175.17. Although the price paid for Red Angus-sired steers was numerically higher, from a statistical standpoint, the price was the same. With heifers, the prices for Red Angus-

sired females was clearly the winner with a $6-per-hundredweight-plus advantage over similar black Angus heifers, and $5 more than Charolaissired females. It is clear that there is a preference for Red Angus females – the “most-favored female” as we like to say. What is even more exciting is that the price advantage for FCCP-tagged calves is greater than ever. Compared to nontagged calves, there is a $2.98-per-hundredweight premium clipped on for using the industry’s largest and longestrunning Process Verified Program tag. At an average weight of just under 600 pounds, the advantage is now $18 per head for using the tag, versus $16 from the last data we had analyzed. On a load of 80 head of 600-pound calves, that’s an extra $1,440 in your pocket just for using the tag. Yet the sad news is that we are only tagging about 175,000 calves, where the potential exists to surpass over a million; and that figure is conservative. And here’s the deal – we can’t go on a hide color (this is my patented statement) … we’ve got to have the proof! We have the proof in prices garnered for Red Angus calves; we’ve got the proof that it pays to tag, yet we have producers that simply ignore that fact or don’t realize the data is out there to support it. Other breeds make claims about their cattle bringing this price or that price. The fact is, a lot of that data is suspect; it

is not scientifically proven using statistical analyses, and the data pool is exceedingly small so as to be questionable, at best. The aforementioned data on prices of steers and heifers over that nine-year period represents over 3 million head of cattle sold. How much more information do you need to be convinced? We’ve got a lot more changes coming down the pike to improve the value of the tag, including health components and more options for the tag, but more than that, there’s going to be a lot of changes that will affect your business in the future of the industry that may or may not be quite as easy to swallow as using a proven value driver like the FCCP tag. So, during this coming spring bull buying season when you are purchasing your Red Angus bulls, make sure your seedstock supplier transfers them to you. Then, call up and order the tags when you are getting ready to identify your calves. It pays big dividends, and you are missing out when you don’t use it. The tags are still only 99 cents for the panel tag and $3.00 for the EID/panel tag combo. Like all things in life, the price will go up later in the year (it’s been 99 cents for 25 years) but the value is still there. Ask any other breed association to quote you the value of their tag. They’ll be hard pressed to find an answer that has as much data behind it. Don’t wait any longer! n

Industry Leaders Confirm Phase-Out of Select Grade Beef Select grade beef has an important past in the cattle and beef business. However, its tonnage is shrinking and will continue to trend lower in the coming decade, based on collaborative research conducted across all beef industry segments. Anipro/Xtraformance Feeds, Top Dollar Angus and the Red Angus Association of America have joined forces to analyze the current and future role of Select grade beef in the U.S. beef supply chain through the release of an industry-focused white paper, "Phasing Out Select Grade Beef." A product that was once a major portion of domestic beef production, accounting for 40 percent of all graded product a mere 10 years ago, Select grade beef is now fading into the background as producers and feeders respond appropriately to market signals encouraging increased levels of marbling. Genetic improvements, grid marketing, changes in feeding practices and the growth of quality-based, branded-

beef programs have drastically reduced the need for this once-staple beef product in grocery stores and restaurants. “The trend is well established with Select beef output being more than cut in half from 2007 to 2017,” said Tom Brink, CEO of the RAAA. “And there is no reason to expect anything but continued shrinkage going forward. Through the Choice-Select price spread, the market continues to communicate that it wants more highly marbled beef. Producers in all segments are paying close attention to this economic signal and are on a path toward the practical elimination of Select beef in the coming decade.” "Phasing Out Select Grade Beef," available exclusively at RedAngus.org, examines key trends in Select grade beef production and consumption over the past 25 years, supported with objective observations and data from industry stakeholders, meat science academics and beef packing repre-

sentatives. Projections as to the future of Select grade beef and its waning value are also provided. The authors recognize the importance of moving the industry forward, thus a white paper on this consequential subject can offer valuable perspective concerning how seedstock producers, commercial cow-calf operators, cattle feeders and food service companies should plan their business practices in the coming years. Member Services Bulletin International Animal Identification Letter International Calving Year letter for 2019 is ‘G.’ Many find this beneficial for tag and identification numbers, i.e. animal ID. How – and even if the letter is used – depends upon the ranch’s preferred style. One suggestion would be to place it in front of the in-herd ID number to identify bull calf, ex: E101, or if it’s a heifer calf to place the letter behind the number ex: 101E. Request for Verification of Contact Information The National Office sends reminders and notifications electronically through email and REDSPro. If you prefer to receive paper forms, please contact the National Office. In order to serve you better, please also review and update your contact information. THR Deadlines and Reminders Past Due – Fall No Progeny Fall Herd Inventory January – Spring Herd Inventory Requested February – Spring Herd Inventory Due Fall Heifer Exposure Due March – Spring No-Progeny Requested April – Spring No-Progeny Due Spring Herd Inventory Your Herd Inventory is the base of Total Herd Reporting, and a very important step that needs to be reevaluated every year for each calving season, Spring or Fall. This would be reviewing every cow that you plan to keep and cull for the upcoming year, or any that unexpectedly exited the herd. This task should not be taken lightly as the animals left in your herd after this process is complete are the ones that are assessed and billed in July. Herd inventories can be accessed online in REDSPro. Updates or changes can be submitted online, printed and the hard copy sent to the National Office, or a hard copy can be requested from the National Office.

DNA Submit Report A DNA Submit Report is available in REDSPro and provides easy access to animal data to complete the DNA order forms. The available report includes animal ID, sex, date of birth, registration number of calf, and sire and dam registration numbers. These can easily be copied and pasted from the report into the GeneSeek Excel order forms. To access this report go to Herd Management/My Reports. Select group or copy and paste a quick group (50 maximum registration numbers at a time), then select Report, DNA Report.

Fall Heifer Exposure The heifer exposure inventory enables members to submit breeding data which is a key factor in the Heifer Pregnancy EPD. This EPD is also a key component to the HerdBuilder Index, which can be used to evaluate your animals on one scale. Yearling Heifers 9-17 months of age appear on the prelisted inventory. These females will be entering the herd inventory and will be subject to assessments in 2018. The information to report is: • Breeding season dates • Exposure information • Contemporary group designation (i.e Management Group) • Disposal information (if applicable) Contemporary group designation is used to characterize females that were given different opportunities to conceive. A few ways to distinguish this might include: • AI only versus AI plus clean-up bull

• Pasture versus dry-lot development • Differences in nutrition and/or location The Fall THR first installments have been billed. Also, accounts have been inactivated if lack of payments has occurred. If this is of concern, please contact the RAAA as soon as possible. Red Angus will no longer accept DNA samples for Zoetis testing after December 21. After Dec. 21, 2018, the RAAA will no longer be conducting DNA testing with Zoetis. Any samples to be submitted to Zoetis must be received on or before this date. DNA evaluation of all submissions received before the cutoff will continue into 2019 until they are completed. Keep in mind that all DNA samples for RAAA animals are to be submitted to the National Office in Colorado. If you have questions about DNA submissions and testing, please contact RAAA at 940-3873502 or email dna@redangus.org.

May each day of the New Year bring you luck, joy, happiness and prosperity! Wishing you and your family lots of

happiness, prosperity and joy this New Year. It is time to say goodbye to the year 2018. We welcome the 2019 year with open arms and hope that the breed will continue to grow.

• Ensure the TSUs are sealed completely by the red stopper with the sample, fluid and green ball inside. • Always align hair follicles and place them under the sticky film on a hair card. • Collect samples from relatively clean and dry areas of the animal. • After collections, store TSU samples at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.

• Only fill blood cards inside the printed circle and ensure they are dry before closing. • Do not submit a blood sample on any animal that was born a twin because of in utero cross contamination. Hair or TSU samples will yield accurate results. • Instead of pulling fine or small hair follicles on calves, try collecting blood or TSUs.

‘Just’ Good Ranch People Raising ‘Just’ Range Cows – the Right Combination by Laura Nelson for the American Red Angus Magazine

“They’re just plain ol’ range cows.” Bob and Frances Dellit shared a good-hearted laugh at the idea of being featured in a magazine. It’s a modesty as warm and genuine as a hug hello at the end of their Broken Chain Ranch driveway in southeastern Montana. In the silence of the gentle sage and short-grass covered hills, they sift through the herd of soonto-be weaned pairs. A mama can almost rest her chin on the tail head of her nursing calf. The cattle pick their way around the dry, tall winter grass near the water tank, and then two-by-two, they turn and make a line of red across the farflung golden horizon, looking for a little more. “If you graze it off, you lose the root system. The roots are really hard to get back if you damage them,” Bob said. “You’ve got to leave quite a bit of grass behind and still bring a cow home in good enough shape to re-breed.” If you can do that, they said, you can make a living off this plain ol’ rangeland.

‘Next year’ we’ll get a little break from the pounding winter. Next year. Most years, they can count on 9 to 10 inches of rain and hope snow in long winter months will help fill a few small reservoirs. But that runs right through the sand, too; they primarily depend on the 42 miles of pipeline they’ve installed to move well water throughout the ranch. The grass is tough. The ‘soil’ is sand. One animal unit needs 35 to 40 acres to graze. Every year is best off when a person’s gratitude is kept higher than expectations. “It is tough country, there’s no doubt. But there are a lot of rewards out here, you know?” Bob said. “You just have to be willing to work hard for it.”

‘Next year’ will be better.

Bob and Frances have been married for 39 years. Most of those have been filled with wonder at the place they get to live, work and raise cattle; a place most people are likely to fly right by. Bob came to the area in 1976 to help at a local branding. He never left.

‘Next year’ we’ll get a little more rain.

“He liked my bay horse,” Frances said.

The open prairies south of the unincorporated community of Sumatra is what most would call ‘next year’ country.

‘Just’ Good Ranch People Raising ‘Just’ Range Cows – the Right Combination to the calf crop; mama cows that could grow a lot of calf on a little forage; heifers that could calve on the range without assistance and without sacrificing weight. They need 85 to 95 pound calves born out of heifers and cows alike to aim for a full, uniform semiload on shipping day.

He grinned at his bride in the rear-view mirror on the way back home from the pasture. “I also liked the girl riding the bay horse.” They were married four years later. The young couple took over her family’s ranch in 1987 with dreams to expand. They bought and leased, bought and leased, and held back heifers to grow the herd. Frances’ dad had started putting Red Angus bulls on their Hereford cow herd in the early 1970s, and a good relationship with a nearby Red Angus breeder continued to grow their interest in, and knowledge of, genetics that would perform on the range and down the road. Frances took to studying EPDs and sale catalogs, keeping their customer at the feedlot in mind all along the way. “We had our eye on a lot of bulls that were more than we could afford in those early years,” Frances said. “But

we had to start somewhere.”

Their customers do, too.

The short-grass prairie is a place where plenty of patience and persistence is required for long-term goals.

Howard Hawks has represented the Dellits’ calves on the Superior Livestock Auction for more than 20 years.

So they kept their eye on the prize: long-bodied, medium to medium-large framed bulls with marbling to pass on

“They wanted to make their herd good, and that’s just what they did,” Hawks said.

Our Program

Our Team

Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.

The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.

Our Key Members:

Our Ranches The Elite Nucleus herd runs on our "home" ranch located 10 miles south of Lewistown, Montana in the Snowy Mountains. We also have an advanced genetics center located in Iowa where our parents began farming over 50 years ago.

Our Genetics We have established a breeding philosophy that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. Our herdsires Night Calver and Independence are perfect examples that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes. Our next generation of herd sires such as X-Porter, X-Factor, Declaration and Bourne continue this tradition and headline the bulls that we will be selling in this event.

• Ryan Ludvigson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the cowherd and development operations in Montana. • Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist, managing our embryo collection and transfer program as well as our embryo export program. • Steve Newberry - our chief business strategist that oversees LN Cattle Company operations. • Rodger Reitman – Our main reproductive specialist and development manager – numerous years experience with seed stock and commercial herds. • Brian Brigham - Our head geneticist and feed efficiency manager. He brings years of experience developing genetic models and brings great technical skills to our operation.

Our Customers

Our Bull and Heifer Development We develop our bulls and females at various development centers throughout the United States. All the bulls are fed a highroughage ration designed to producea 3.0 lb ADG with 0.2 of an inch back fat. The replacement females are fed a carrying ration and we have maintained over an 80% first service AI conception rate on our females. The cattle are developed to adapt to any environment and thrive.

Our customers play an integral and ongoing part in our breeding program. It would be impossible for us to remain competitive without constant input by our customers. Our customer's environments range from the High Desert to the High Plains and from the Midwest to the Rio Grande. Adaptability of our genetics has been the key to why our customers come back year after year.

$Profitability Again this year, every bull will have a $Profit Index. This index ranks cattle on their ability to return “profit” to the beef industry. We believe that this index will simplify the selection process for our customers and move their operations in the right direction faster in this competitive market. Please contact us to visit about this ground breaking index as well as to receive materials that explain the process in more detail.

‘Just’ Good Ranch People Raising ‘Just’ Range Cows – the Right Combination award did mark one year’s prize-winning crop of late-March and April steer calves, it also marks many years’ worth of work that proves “plain ol’ range cows” can do a lot more than just make a living on the prairie.

“Their cattle have steadily improved over the years. They run in tough country, and those cows just fit the grass country they’re in.” In 2007, they started genetic, age and source verifying calves with Feeder Calf Certification Program yellow tags, and they take the next step by naming those top-end sires in sale day descriptions.

“It’s just rewarding, to see all those years of working over those bull selections and paying attention to that carcass information come back to us,” Bob said.

“The feeders know what sires are going to make the cattle that will feed well,” Hawks said. “Bob and Frances put in a lot of time and strive to do their very best with their selections. The Red Angus breed has come a long way in the past 10 years, and it shows.”

100, with nearly 88 percent grading Choice and 70 percent in the yield grade 1 or 2 category. The award hangs in the kitchen of the home Frances’ grandparents built; the house her mother was born in. They share stories about the years they’ve spent marking up bull sale catalogs at that same kitchen table. While the

It’s also a reminder that in country where you might gather cows for four days and never see a neighbor, they’re not in this alone. “We’ve taken a great interest in those carcass numbers because that’s what our feeders need,” Frances said. “They’re selling a carcass, so if we don’t give them an animal that will grade, they’re going to lose interest in us, big time.”

‘Just’ Good Ranch People Raising ‘Just’ Range Cows – the Right Combination They look at their work as a three-way partnership between their bull breeder, their grass management, and their feeder. “We have to give a lot of credit to the seedstock producers for improving the industry as a whole,” Frances said. “They keep improving their end, so we can keep improving what we do for the next guy down the line.” Hawks said that neighborly attitude is part of what keeps hands in the air on auction day. “We’ve had repeat buyers on those calves for the past 20 years. If the same guy doesn’t get them, the neighbors do,” Hawks said. “They have good rapport with their buyers. They follow up and talk to them throughout the year. They want to know how their calves are doing – they just care.” If they can keep up with the feeder’s demand for growth and grade while supporting low-maintenance cows that wean

calves about half their size, they’re making progress on the prairie. “Those better bulls, they do give you better calves, and we see that on sale day,” Bob adds. “But the rewards really come back in the females.”

44 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

They’ve built their herd by typically keeping their own genetic investments. But in recent years, Red Angus female demand has pushed them to sell the top end of the heifer crop, too.

‘Just’ Good Ranch People Raising ‘Just’ Range Cows “It’s hard to put them on the bus, that’s for sure,” Bob said. “They’re good heifers.” Frances nodded. This is obviously a conversation they’ve had around this table before. “We’re going to quit selling those replacements … next year,” she said. “Next year,” Bob smiled. “But Red Angus females are so hot, you can’t afford not to sell them. In this country, if you think you’re going to winter those heifers for less than what you can sell them for right now, well …” He tapped his hand on her knee; they shrug and nod in agreement. “But boy, it is fun to see them tough it out on this short-grass country, calve out on the range at the end of March and April, and still come home with a nice, big calf at their side,” she said.

Ritchey’s dual-colored, engravable tags allow for permanent numbering.

That’s the mark of a good range cow: they can do a lot with just a little. www.ritcheytags.com

Follow Us on Facebook

That goes for ranch people, too. “There are very few who are really making a living off the land these days,” Bob said. “People say you can’t make cows pay for a ranch. But you can; we’re doing it. And we’ve had a lot of fun doing it, too – haven’t we, ma?” No doubt, they’ve shared as many smiles as miles in the saddle side-by-side. And, like everything on the prairie, it just takes time and a lot of hard work. “They’re just good, honest ranch people; a good husband-wife team, good stewards,” Hawks said. “They take really good care of those cattle. They take on a lot of work, and they just get it done.” ‘Just’ good ranch people raising ‘just’ range cows. It’s just the right combination. ■

Making Heads and Tails Out of Bull Sale Data by Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator

Each week, the mailman delivers fresh reading material to cattlemen and eBlasts fill up inboxes with links to online catalogs, videos and sale reminders. Facebook and other social media outlets resonate with individual lot information and pre-sale activities. The influx of communication and data during bull sale season can be overwhelming to bull shoppers.

multaneously accounting for pedigree influences.”

Photos, performance numbers, pedigrees, EPDs, breed rankings and Top Dollar Angus logos cover catalog pages providing buyers with the necessary tools to find the perfect Red Angus genetics for their herds. Then of course, buyers must evaluate the live animal for conformation, structure, disposition and price; and consider the seedstock supplier for proximity, customer service, quality of offering and reputation.

Dan Rorvig

So how does a customer make heads or tails of the surplus of information surrounding a bull sale? Where does a buyer start to sort through the data? What is the priority? Selection Starting Point According to Dr. Scott Speidel, Colorado State University animal science assistant professor, bull-buying criteria depends on an operation’s production and marketing systems, and cattle producers’ needs to evaluate their own situation and goals. “Bull buyers need to identify what economically relevant traits enhance their profitability in their unique production and marketing environment,” Speidel explained. “Seedstock producers strive to provide enough information in their bull sale catalogs so each of their customers can find the bulls that fit their needs, but not all data is relevant to each buyer.” While it might be tempting to seek out bulls that rank in the top percentile of each trait, it’s not a realistic expectation. Cattlemen and women who understand their cowherd’s attributes, environmental limitations and marketing goals will

Dr. Scott Speidel

be able to identify the traits that will further improve their operation, yielding larger returns on sale day and well into the future, and this might not be through the use of a top-percentile bull. Speidel endorsed the science and reliability of EPDs as the most accurate tool bull shoppers can use when selecting their next generation of genetics. “EPDs will always be a better indicator of the value of that animal as a future parent,” he said. “They are more trustworthy than using just phenotype numbers such as weights and in-herd ratios. In the calculation of EPDs, the effect of non-genetic influences on phenotype, such as environment, are minimized while si-

54 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

That said, he emphasized collecting phenotypic data, such as weights and ultrasound scans, is more important than ever. “It’s all about improving the predictions (i.e. EPDs) and predictions are driven off of data. The goal is to have the most accurate ranking of individuals. Phenotypic data drives the accuracy and prediction qualities of EPDs – the data needs to be there for the predictions to be of value.” Picking the Priority Prioritizing bull selection criteria – calving ease, weaning weight, maternal strength, carcass merit – sounds easy enough, but in order to successfully impact their operation, producers must find a balance in all areas to maximize their return on investment. Speidel said ranchers should have knowledge of the average performance of their herd, then identify areas that need improvement in their production and marketing program. “Ranchers need to have an idea of the traits that will add value to the animals they are producing. Their bull-buying priority depends on which area will have the most influence on their profitability, and where that need for improvement is the greatest,” he said. “Then they can place priority on the traits that will advance their herd and most improve their profitability.” He commented on selecting for extreme numbers. “Animals with traits ranking in the top 10 percent of the breed can improve a trait area more rapidly.

Making Heads and Tails Out of Bull Sale Data information. We don’t always get to buy those top-numbered bulls because it’s hard to justify the price. Likewise, some of the EPDs aren’t relevant to our operation. That’s where the indexes are very helpful to consolidate the numbers.”

If producers don’t need to move a group quickly, they can use animals with more balanced genetic merit such as those with rankings in the top one-third of the breed. Selecting for extremes may bring with it undesired change in other traits. For instance, selecting for extreme yearling weight will likely bring with it increases in costs associated with feeding larger cows – a correlated response, important if you are retaining females by these extreme sires.” Dan Rorvig, a commercial cow-calf rancher and bred heifer developer near McVille, North Dakota, appreciates EPDs when he’s seeking new sires for his operation. “I think EPDs are super beneficial as a selection tool, especially if we can stack certain traits over three generations and see advancements through financial gains on marketing day,” he said. “We put emphasis on the HerdBuilder

Index at our ranch. For our bred heifer program we need trustworthy bulls that will sire calves that are born easily, but we also want bulls with additional merits. We don't just need a calving ease bull but one that will produce good offspring down the road. “As a commercial cow-calf operation we sometimes get straight-up overload on

56 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

The HerdBuilder Index, provided by the Red Angus Association of America in its EPD suite, delivers a comprehensive number to identify individuals that will contribute to the cowherd traits. EPDs carry varying weights of importance and include Stayability, Average Daily Gain, Calving Ease Direct, Feed Intake, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Heifer Pregnancy, Marbling, Yield Grade, Mature Weight and Milk. Speidel agreed. “For commercial producers, the indexes, in general, are the best indicators of overall profitability potential if the traits that make up the index conform to their production needs.

Making Heads and Tails Out of Bull Sale Data In using indexes, they can select from one piece of information rather than considering multiple sources, making indexes a simple selection tool.” He added that individual EPDs can help bull buyers fine tune their decisions if two bulls carry similar values in an index but vary in their respective prediction numbers. In the Bull Pen After bull buyers make their pre-sale short list based on data, pedigree, photos and videos, they rely on visual appraisal for their final culling. Visual appraisal helps buyers determine the conformation, structure and disposition of their sale prospects. Feet and legs should be evaluated because every bull needs to travel well to do his job, as do his daughters in production. Rorvig said that despite the data, deciding whose sale to attend also makes a

difference. “My relationship with my seedstock supplier is as important as anything. It is step 1.” Bull buyers should be able to trust that sellers are accurately representing their cattle and offering the cream of the crop. Accurate data, stringent culling criteria prior to the sale, and top-notch customer service all factor into buying decisions. “When I walk into the bull pen, I like to see bulls with good muscle expression and a really thick rear end,” said Rorvig. “I also pay attention to a bull’s foot structure, but I don’t necessarily think it’s my job as a customer to watch the quality of feet. I shouldn’t have to worry about it at that point – the seedstock supplier should have already done due diligence to cull out problem animals.” Speidel recommends a balance of data and conformation when selecting bulls. “Everyone likes cattle that look good,

but do they make you more money? If less desirable traits aren’t influencing profitability, then buyers shouldn’t focus on them. The more things we consider in a selection decision, whether it’s EPDs or phenotypic traits, the slower we will realize genetic progress in any particular trait that we are trying to improve.” The same holds true for pedigree consideration. “Sometimes there’s particular value in knowing a pedigree, for example, to enhance hybrid vigor or to avoid inbreeding. But EPDs already factor in the pedigree’s contribution to an animal’s expected performance.” He pointed out that with each generation, an ancestor’s genetic contribution diminishes and, past the third generation, impacts an animal’s characteristics relatively little.

Making Heads and Tails Out of Bull Sale Data

Added Perks Beyond EPDs and phenotype, other factors can contribute to solidifying bull buyers’ decisions. Animals that have been DNA profiled will display EPDs with increased accuracy values. The genomic-enhanced EPDs will be as reliable as a bull whose first calf crop has been reported or similar to that of a cow with a lifetime of progeny. DNA testing also confirms parentage of the sale animal and may also verify that it is free of specific genetic defects.

Some bull sale catalogs display the breed rankings below each EPD so buyers can quickly determine where the animal ranks. “It’s important to know each breed’s average EPDs,” said Rorvig, who uses Red Angus in a planned crossbreeding pro-

gram. “Having the rankings with each EPD is a quick reference when sorting through the bulls.” Rorvig strives to purchase bulls that fall within a range of trait perimeters he’s identified to work for his operation – all of which are above average and ideally in the top 30 percent. Rorvig also reads the footnotes. “In the old days only the top bulls had comments. Now many catalogs have footnotes on all the bulls and I like that. It gives me insight into the cow family, her production record and other traits that might not be measurable, such as disposition.” Third-party verification companies, like Top Dollar Angus, can also identify sale animals that are superior. Top Dollar Angus designates cattle that rank in the top 25 percent of the breed for growth and carcass traits, qualities that add profit on shipping day when calf buyers

are confident the calves will perform well in the feedlot. In addition to the latest state-of-the-art EPDs and genomics, RAAA data is backed by over two decades of Total Herd Reporting which further solidifies the reliability of the association’s prediction tools. “Price is still a driving factor,” concluded Rorvig, “but indexes, breed rankings and a good relationship with our seedstock supplier help us sort out the bulls that will work for us and drive our program forward.” Speidel’s final advice to bull buyers reflects on knowing the strengths and weaknesses of their cowherd. “Focus on those things that influence your profitability the most, with the realization that the more traits you select for, the slower you’ll make progress in any one area.” n

Bull Selection To Meet Your Operation’s Goals Spring is always a busy time of the year – cows are calving and bulls are selling across the country. In addition, many hours are spent scouring through hundreds of pages of bull sale catalogs in order to identify a future herd sire. Within the pages of these books, there is a multitude of information about each animal and its relative value as a parent. This information can include EPDs, actual or adjusted weights, ratios, pedigree information and general seller’s comments. The job of the purchasers is to identify the information that is most important to them and then make their purchasing decisions. It has been well documented that the best and most efficient way to make genetic progress in any herd is to use EPDs for selection decisions. EPDs focus on the additive genetic merit of an animal, which represents the merit for a trait that can be passed from one generation to the next. Currently the Red Angus Association of America publishes 16 individual EPDs and two selection indexes. The individual EPDs can be thought of in two categories – economically relevant traits or indicator traits. Traits that are classified as ERTs are traits that directly associate with either a cost or a revenue stream for an operation. Indicator traits serve as a good predictor for an ERT and are often used when it is impossible or expensive to collect phenotypes for the ERT. One of the most important things for producers to identify is which EPDs are truly ERTs versus indicator traits. It is important to make selection decisions that are relevant and profitable for your business. Not only that, but the relative importance of a trait can vary from one operation to the next.

by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement

of dystocia, labor and possible veterinary costs are reduced.

Economically Relevant Trait EPDs When we think about the different types of ERT, we can focus on where that trait is associated with a revenue or a cost for your business. Generally, the traits that are associated with a revenue are output traits such as weight or carcass-quality. Therefore, in terms of selection it is important to identify when cattle will be marketed and identify cattle that will fit that marketing system. For a producer that sells their calves at weaning, selecting a bull that will produce heavier calves at weaning will be beneficial. So, for that operation, the WW EPD is an ERT. However, for the person that purchases the cattle, carcass weight would be an ERT. Additionally, the purchaser will also be interested in carcass quality of those animals especially if those cattle are to be marketed on a grid. The second class of ERTs are traits that are associated with a cost for that operation. One of the biggest costs in any operation is feeding the mature cow herd. Therefore, it is important to identify animals that have weight and mature sizes that are suitable for your environment. An additional example of trait selection for cost savings is reducing calving difficulty through the use of calving-ease EPDs. By having a decreased incidence

64 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

The dry matter intake EPD was also introduced last spring and represents a trait that can be viewed as a cost-saving ERT. When comparing two bulls with a similar EPD profile for weight gain, a bull with a lower DMI EPD will achieve this gain more efficiently and therefore reduce costs in the post-weaning phase of production. Generally, the challenging part of quantifying these cost-saving traits is assigning a dollar value to the improvement, however, by selecting for more optimal performance, the financial success of the operation is improved. There are also traits that can influence both the cost and revenue side of an operation. The biggest example of these are fertility traits, which are considered the largest drivers of profitability in any beef enterprise. Currently, RAAA publishes two EPDs that focus on female fertility traits. These EPDs are Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability. HPG focuses on the ability for a female to conceive during her first breeding season, and Stayability focuses on the ability of females to remain productive in the herd until 6 years of age. When fertility traits are improved, not only are there more calves available to sell each year, but heifer development costs are reduced. Indicator Trait EPDs The other type of traits that are available on which to make selection decisions are indicator traits. These traits are not directly associated with a cost or a revenue of an operation, but instead help predict an animal’s performance for those traits. An example of an indicator trait is birth weight. This can be actually used as an indicator to predict multiple traits. Generally, BW is associated with predicting calving difficulty, but it can also help to predict future growth potential.

Bull Selection To Meet Your Operation’s Goals Another common group of indicator traits are ultrasound measurements. These are used because actual carcass measurements cannot be collected on live animals used as parents, however they do help to predict the animal’s genetic merit for the ERTs of the actual carcass measurements. Indexes While the types of ERTs are generally easy to list, it is important to identify which EPDs are available to make selection decisions to improve those traits in your operation. Another way to simplify selection decisions is through the use of indexes. RAAA offers two selection indexes to help producers make profitable selection decisions. The first index is an all-purpose HerdBuilder Index. This index is modeled after a scenario where female replacements are retained in the breeding herd

The second index that is available is the GridMaster Index. This index focuses on a scenario where the bull is mated to mature cows and all progeny are marketed on a quality-based grid. Therefore, the GridMaster Index’s primary traits of emphasis are Marbling, Yield Grade and Growth.

and all non-replacement animals are marketed on a quality-based grid. Therefore, this index takes into account traits that are important to consider in replacement females such as Stayability, Heifer Pregnancy and Calving Ease. In addition, because a percentage of progeny will be marketed on a quality-based grid, traits such as Marbling, Yield Grade and Growth are also taken into account.

No matter what the goal of the individual operation, selection tools from the Red Angus EPD suite provide a prediction to achieve those objectives. The most important factor is to identify which traits are ERT in your operation. Once those traits are identified, then selection using a multiple-trait approach is the most efficient way to make progress that benefits the profitability of the herd or operation overall. This can be done using the individual EPDs or more simply by using the index that most closely fits your breeding objective. n

Brown Inducted into Saddle & Sirloin Club

R.A. “Rob” Brown, Jr. of Throckmorton, Texas, was honored as the 2018 Saddle and Sirloin Club inductee during a ceremony Nov. 11 at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. Induction into the Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Gallery is the highest honor bestowed on an animal agriculture leader who has made major contributions to the livestock industry in the U.S. and abroad as judged by peers. The gallery includes more than 350 oil paintings and commemorates a single industry honoring stockmen, leaders and pioneers who helped establish and advance modern animal agriculture. It pays tribute to one distinguished livestock industry leader per year. Brown will be the second Red Angus breeder chosen for the gallery, following Sal Forbes (2009). The oil portrait of Brown was painted by Richard Halstead, the renowned artist commissioned for the last 23 years. The R.A. Brown Ranch is a multi-generation operation. Brown built his operation into a substantial business that encompasses multiple seedstock herds, Quarter Horses, commercial cow-calf herds, stocker operations, cattle feeding and farming. His livestock have impacted the world’s cattle genetics and his industry leadership has played a significant role during critical moments of many organizations.

R.A. “Rob” Brown was inducted into the Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Gallery this past November. Brown said, “This is the most prestigious award I could ever receive. It certainly is the most humbling.” Brown is quick to give credit for his family’s success to his lifelong bride and business partner, Peggy. Throughout the years, Rob and Peggy’s primary focus has been to instill love in the family and foster family relations. The Browns have been progressive in generational transfer as well, and have all four of their children and their families back at the ranch growing successful businesses.

Brown has lived by the motto, “Be progressive yet practical, and embrace science while respecting tradition.”

He has given his time freely, and his efforts have made a profound positive impact on the industry. Mr. and Mrs. Brown were honored with the RAAA 2013 Pioneer Breeder of the Year award, and have been supporters and advocates for Red Angus since purchasing Roy Beeby’s replacement heifers in 1987.

Funding for the portrait and induction ceremony came from private donations, and any funds in excess of the $45,000 cost will go to the Sal Forbes Research & Development Fund at the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. The family donated the “Pick of the Herd” from their operation that was auctioned off during the National Red Angus Convention this past September. The proceeds from half of that sale (the other half were directed to RAFI), along with donations received through RAFI, helped offset the cost of the portrait and the presentation during the unveiling ceremony.

R.A. “Rob” Brown and his wife Peggy, (far right, front row) were joined by their family for the induction ceremony. All four of their children and their families are back at the ranch growing successful businesses.

70 American Red Angus Magazine n January 2019

Not only has he had a lasting impact on the industry living by this motto, he has instilled these values into his highly successful family, which will assure Brown family leadership for years to come. And now his portrait hangs amongst some of the greatest in the livestock industry.

Rob and Peggy’s desire is to have all donations in excess of the goal be used in the Foundation to continue advancing the breed forward. Donations are tax deductible and may be sent to the Red Angus Foundation, Inc., 18335 E. 103rd Ave. Suite 202, Commerce City, CO 80022. n

Why Red Angus Producers Should Care About Sustainability Why should Red Angus producers care about sustainability?

by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications

Short answer: Because if you’re not sustainable, you’re not profitable. Longer answer: Consumers want sustainable beef, even if they don’t know exactly what that means, and as one of my favorite beef producers and role models, Debbie Lyons-Blythe said, “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” Beef has a fabulous success rate – 90 percent of consumers love the taste of beef. Ninety percent! I challenge you to name one president who has had an approval rating of that level. However, on the flip side, only 38 percent of consumers approve of how beef is raised, and sustainability is a big part of that. Do I have your attention? What is sustainable beef? The United Nations definition of a sustainable agricultural system is one where natural resources are managed in a way that maintains ecosystem functions to support current as well as future human needs. Additionally, a sustainable food system is one

where food is nutritious and accessible for everyone.

pounds of commodity beef that doesn’t have a “story” for the consumer.

In the agriculture industry, we add “profitable” to that definition because multi-generation farms and ranches didn’t get that way by operating in the red for 50-plus years. Excellent land, resource and business management practices make an operation sustainable in more ways than one.

And, if you haven’t noticed, the consumer base has changed over the past few years. Today, nearly half of the U.S. population is made up of consumers born after 1981, and they have different shopping habits than their parents and grandparents. In fact, more than 50 percent of Millennials – the generation accused of ruining everything from McDonald’s to college football – make a genuine effort to buy products from companies that support causes that are near and dear to their heart, including the environment. They want to know how their food was produced, which is essentially the story behind their meal.

For example, did you know that U.S. beef producers raise 18 percent of the world’s beef with only 8 percent of the world’s cattle? Doing more with less is one of the unspoken, yet unwavering, mantras of American beef production and we will continue to see that trend in our industry for years to come. You may think that sustainable beef is just a niche product with a special label, along the same lines as antibiotic-free or hormone-free beef but you’d be wrong. Only 4.5 percent of retail-beef-purchasing dollars are spent on niche beef, meaning that the remainder is spent on “commodity beef.” Furthermore, only 3 percent of total beef production in the U.S. falls into a niche category such as organic, natural or antibiotic-free or hormonefree. That leaves roughly 24.8 billion

80 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

Transparency matters Beef has a lot of things to brag about. It tastes great, is in high demand (up 8 percent over the past nine years) and, as I have heard repeated time and again at industry conventions, it’s nature’s multivitamin. So why are we constantly having to defend our livelihood and prove that we are sustainable? Because consumer trust hinges on transparency – they cannot trust what they cannot see.

Why Red Angus Producers Should Care About Sustainability There is no “trust fall” teambuilding exercise in the grocery store – if they don’t trust beef production, they won’t buy beef. That’s a relatively simple equation to solve. The challenge is that cattle people are notoriously private; we don’t want anyone to know our business and, even when we do share information, it’s vague at best. However, transparency in the production chain matters to consumers in regards to all purchases – from baby wipes to beef. If they can’t see and don’t understand it, they fear it. How can we improve beef sustainability? First off, I want to make it clear that beef is already a sustainable protein. Farmers and ranchers who are operating on third-, fourth- and fifth-generation farms and ranches are a testament to that fact. Obviously, in order for something to be sustainable it has to be profitable as well. But consumers are searching for a bit more qualification than a black bottom line. One way in which the beef industry can improve its sustainability is by producing corn through the use of no-till or conservation tillage. These practices increase soil organic carbon and reduce soil erosion, which contribute to overall sustainability measures for beef production. Therefore, growing corn more efficiently, in a way that is better for the environment, will increase beef sustainability. Another practice to increase beef’s sustainability is through the use of beta-agonists, which improve the net contribution of actual beef protein to the supply chain. Producing more beef, using the same amount, or fewer, of inputs of land, water and feed positively contributes to beef’s sustainability measures.

This may seem a bit obvious, but decreasing the amount of beef wasted contributes to beef’s overall sustainability. In my home, you’d be hardpressed to find leftover steak but there is occasionally too much meat sauce for the spaghetti or a chunk of beef roast that never got rewarmed. Tossing those small leftover portions into the trash is not only wasteful, but it decreases the overall sustainability of beef by wasting the resources that were used to produce it. To remedy this, you can look into “plannedover” recipes from your state beef council or access them online at BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com. Last, but most certainly not least, there are a whole host of industry publications that share information on keeping cattle healthy, utilizing good genetics and managing feed resources more effectively. All of these practices not only contribute to the profitability of the ranch, but also the sustainability. For example, a producer who purchases a good or great bull will see more return on their investment, i.e. greater amounts of high-quality beef for marketing. A producer who uses average or below-average bulls will have lower input costs on the genetic side but may have more feed costs to get those calves to market, thereby decreasing their profitability and overall sustainability of the business. In short, sustainability is about doing the same things we’re already doing – genetic selection, pasture management, feed production and health management – just a little bit better, every year. What does this mean for me? I’m not encouraging all seedstock producers to quit their jobs and travel the country as sustainability spokespeople. However, if we don’t speak

82 American Red Angus Magazine n January 2019

up and talk about beef’s positive sustainability story and how we are continuously improving, someone from Green Peace or PETA will do the talking for us, and I can staunchly guarantee we won’t like their version of the story. Are you wondering what you can do? You can start by committing a few pro-beef sustainability facts to memory, such as: • Only 2 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to cattle in the U.S. (EPA, 2016) • From 2005-2011, the U.S. beef industry reduced its greenhouse gas emissions and water use by 2 and 3 percent, respectively. • Grain-finished beef cattle provide nearly 20 percent more human-edible protein than they consume. Additionally, take some time to think about your management practices. Do you have a grazing plan in place? Do you have water resource management strategies in place that address the use, optimization, conservation and quality of water? Those two resources are vitally important to both the livelihood of your operation and beef’s sustainability. There is a reason industry stakeholders from farm to fork are advancing the sustainability story of beef to meet the challenge the industry faces. Sustainability is key to your operation and the beef industry – consumers are demanding information and will not settle for less than their expectations. If they can’t get it from us, they will find another protein option to put on the supper table. Don’t be fooled into thinking that beef sustainability is a fad – it’s not equivalent to flared jeans and disco, and it will most-assuredly still be a driving factor in the next decade. n

Management Strategies Optimize Heifer Reproduction and Profitability by Jaclyn N. Ketchum and Michael F. Smith, University of Missouri

Hands down, the most impactful trait on profitability is reproductive efficiency. Without a viable factory in the heifer or cow, there is no product – or calf – to sell, therefore no profit. Dr. Bryan Melton, Iowa State University, estimated that the impact of reproductive traits on profitability to be three to nine times more important than other beef production traits.

Dr. Cliff Lamb, Texas A&M University, said, “Ensuring that cows become pregnant is the No. 1 most-economical trait that beef cattle producers should rely on.” By increasing the proportion of heifers and cows that conceive early in the breeding season, producers will shorten their calving season, therefore increasing weaning weights simply due to the calf’s older age. The advantage of early-born calves doesn’t end at weaning, however. Dr. Rick Funston, University of Nebraska-North Platte, reported that heifer calves born in

the first 20 days of calving season maintain a reproductive advantage throughout their lifespan over calves born in the second or third cycle. Cattle producers can implement management strategies between weaning and the start of breeding season that will increase the likelihood of heifers conceiving early in their first and second breeding seasons. The second breeding season is frequently the biggest challenge since 2-year-old heifers are continuing to grow, lactate and rebreed.

86 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

Management Decisions at Weaning Weaning is generally the time when producers decide which females to keep as replacements, but what variables should producers consider when selecting heifers?

Dr. George Perry of South Dakota State University wrote, “It has been well documented that nutrition, age and genetics are regulators of age at puberty [and that] age at puberty is an important trait in relation to reproductive success, productive life span and profitability in beef operation.”

Management Strategies Optimize Heifer Reproduction and Profitability With that in mind, it is important to select replacements that are likely to obtain puberty prior to the start of breeding. Heifers unlikely to obtain that goal should be culled. Not only is it important for heifers to obtain puberty prior to breeding but it is beneficial if they have experienced at least one estrous cycle. Research conducted at Fort Keogh Range and Livestock Research facility in Miles City, Montana, showed that heifers that experienced at least one estrous cycle prior to breeding had increased pregnancy rates and that nonpubertal dams at time of breeding are more likely to produce offspring that are nonpubertal at start of breeding, further supporting the recommendation to cull late-maturing heifers. After selecting replacements likely to reach early puberty, a producer must decide the heifers’ breeding target weight. Funston wrote, “Research published through the late 1980s demonstrated greater negative effects of limited postweaning growth on age of puberty and pregnancy rates, whereas more recent studies demonstrate less of a negative impact of delayed puberty on pregnancy rate.” Prebreeding Nutrition Nutrition is an important component that contributes to the timing of puberty, however developing heifers is expensive and should be done efficiently. Producers also need to consider how the cattle industry has changed over the years. Funston stated, “Recent research has indicated that developing heifers to a lighter target body weight at breeding – 50 to 57 percent of mature body weight compared with 60 to 65 percent – reduced development costs and did not impair reproductive performance.”

cows can “practically be determined by looking at the sale weight of cows you have culled from your herd over the past couple of years.” Table 1. outlines management considerations producers need to account for when

deciding on a target weight. Some heifers will not reach the target weight while others will exceed it. Heifers that exceed the target weight are not necessarily the best since overfeeding can be detrimental to pregnancy rates.

Results in mature cows that weigh more and have higher maintenance energy that produce calves with similar weaning weight to those females developed to a lower %MBW.

Long-term management

These females cannot be forgotten, they must continue to be managed so that they reach the appropriate mature body weight.

If turned out to pasture or nutrition is changed these females may lose or maintain weight. Supplementation may need to be provided if the forage provided does not meet maintenance energy requirements.

However, in order to develop heifers correctly, producers need to know the mature body weight (MBW) of their cows. Perry suggests that the MBW of

88 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

This method does not change their ability to put on fat or store energy nor did it increase their Body Condition Score.

Management Strategies Optimize Heifer Reproduction and Profitability Heifers gaining weight tend to have increased pregnancy rates when compared to heifers losing weight. Dr. Andy Roberts at the Fort Keogh Range and Livestock Research Facility, conducted research that indicates growth is vital. “That rate of growth during the preweaning or early postweaning phase had much more of an influence on when heifers became pregnant than management-induced or animal variations in rate of growth during the later part of the postweaning period.” Nutrition isn’t the only factor to consider. Dr. Renaldo Cooke, Texas A&M University, said, “Cattle with an excitable temperament have altered metabolism and partitioning of nutrients in order to sustain the behavioral stress response, which results in further decreases in nutrient availability to support body functions. Cattle with a calm temperament have reduced cortisol (stress hormone) and

greater blood concentrations of luteinizing hormone, the hormone required for puberty establishment and ovulation, compared to temperamental cows.” Temperament can be improved through management, but producers must plan accordingly. Cooke’s research showed that replacement heifers exposed to an acclimation process of human handling for four weeks after weaning had improved temperament, reduced cortisol, and reached puberty and became pregnant earlier compared to non-acclimated cohorts. It is important to note that these heifers had similar ADGs. Therefore, producers wishing to increase the number of pubertal heifers can expose them to human handling. If this is not an option, it may be beneficial to cull temperamental heifers. Prebreeding Examination Components Performing a prebreeding examination

90 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2019

four to six weeks before the breeding season is an important management tool in heifer development. This is an ideal time to administer prebreeding vaccines and for a veterinarian to obtain a reproductive tract score (RTS) – an objective measurement of sexual maturity in heifer that identifies nonpubertal, reproductively immature or freemartin heifers. Although body weight is generally positively correlated to pubertal status, data from the Show-Me-Select Heifer Program in Missouri revealed there is considerable variation in heifers’ body weight within each RTS. The score is obtained by palpation per rectum and is based on the degree of uterine development and ovarian status. Each heifer is assigned a score of 1-5: 1 = infantile heifer, 2 = prepubertal heifer, 3 = peripubertal heifer, and 4 or 5 = pubertal heifer. A goal of at least 50 percent of the heifers should score greater than or equal to 4 before breeding.

Management Strategies Optimize Heifer Reproduction and Profitability Pelvic area: Gene Deutscher, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said, “Calving difficulty is becoming a greater concern for beef producers because of the increased emphasis on rapid growth rates, heavier weaning weights and improved cow efficiency.” Deutscher recommended obtaining measurements on yearling heifers and culling those with small pelvic areas to reduce dystocia. “Pelvic measurements can be obtained on a heifer before breeding and the pelvic area divided by a ratio of 2.1 to estimate the calf birth weight that the heifer can deliver as a 2-year-old without having substantial difficulty.” Deutscher emphasized that producers should use caution when placing selection pressure on only pelvic area. “By selecting both bulls and heifers for pelvic size, a herd of cows with large pelvic areas could be developed. However, selecting only for pelvic size would probably result in an increased mature cow size.” Prebreeding vaccinations: Time is precious, so when the option arises to reduce the number of trips through the chute, most producers take it. An example would be administering prebreeding vaccinations at the start of a synchronization protocol. This saves time, but at what cost? Several studies conducted by Miller, Chiang and Perry reported negative impacts on pregnancy by vaccinating naïve heifers with a modified live virus vaccine around time of breeding. Thus, an important variable to know is the heifers’ vaccination history. Are heifers naïve or have they been managed with a full vaccination protocol?

Heifer breeders should also know what class of vaccine was administered. Recent research reported that administering an MLV at 30 days or less prebreeding can reduce AI conception rates even in non-naïve cattle. Chemically altered or inactivated vaccines are considered safer and administering them closer to the start of the breeding season has not been reported to cause problems in nonnaïve heifers. Perry added, “Efficacy of the class of vaccination is important to consider.” Females that have only ever been exposed to chemically altered or inactivated vaccines will have lower efficacy when exposed to BVD or IBR. Perry recommended, “Heifers should receive an MLV and their boosters early in life, then animals can be administered a chemically altered or inactivated vaccine closer to the breeding season with-

out worrying about reproduction or health concerns.” Producers who plan ahead and prepare for the breeding season will realize success on preg-check day and during calving season. Attention to detail in the areas of nutrition, health and pubertal status will set up heifers for a successful career as a productive cow. Quality breeding candidates have obtained puberty and are in good health, therefore ready for the next stage – estrous synchronization and breeding. ■ ________________________________

Genetic Choices Have Greater Consequences Than You Think by Jared Wareham, Top Dollar Angus General Manager

Over the past few decades, numerous articles have been written about the positive impacts of genetic selection, as well as the tools available to apply pressure to traits that directly affect beef production profits in all segments. Moreover, we have consistently focused on only the rewards that accompany improvement. I’d like to examine the same basic principles from a slightly different ocular. What will it inevitably cost you NOT to improve?

How often have you sat back and considered the costs or ramifications of poor genetic selection? What longterm negative outcomes will result from things like settling for that lastminute bargain bull, hanging on to those outdated genetics longer than

you should, or failing to partner with the right genetics supplier? Letting time constraints or lower cost options drive your selection decision could have a lasting effect on the genetic population of your herd. Choosing to ignore the economic impact of traits such as marbling, carcass weight and gain will be met with the inevitable devaluation of your beef by the industry. The role of genetics in profitable cattle feeding and packing is well-documented and rapidly escalating in importance.

Genetic Choices Have Greater Consequences Than You Think As I travel the country visiting with cattlemen and women in these segments, they lament the fact that predictive genetic values greatly contribute to profitability when combined with other highly important factors like health, flesh and projected harvest date. They are aware of its importance and embrace the value it contributes to decreasing operational risk. You simply can’t look at thousands of feeder calves and visually segregate those that will be profitable from those that won’t. Genetic information has the ability to do just that and ultimately has highlighted the need for verification systems that can segregate higher value cattle from those that are more commodity with regards to beef quality and profitability. Though verifying genetic potential is

relatively new, it is rapidly growing due to its clear value. Increasing the likelihood that a purchased set of cattle will be profitable over unverified groups offers substantial risk protection. This is precisely why the longterm ramifications of genetic selections, good or bad, will be significant. Poor selection coupled with the ever persistent risk reduction environment within the cattle feeding and packing segments will lead to one certainty, if you have cattle that are less likely to be profitable for the next owner, they will know. Don’t ignore profit-driven traits that are documented, especially when the level of documentation in our industry – both EPDs and DNA – is on the rise and will only continue to do so. By choosing to put less selection pressure on important traits, you may inadvertently lock yourself into the

commodity “basement” and cap the future value of your cattle. Be aware that your genetic decisions can have long-term consequences, good and bad. Partner with seedstock providers that also understand the implications of not pressing forward. They can help you continue to create cattle with industry value while capturing the rancher-friendly maternal traits your profit equation also requires. Producing pounds of high quality beef as efficiently as possible will continue to become more scrutinized by all segments that answer to the same end point – the consumer. As the level of scrutiny rises, so must your commitment to precision. Jared Wareham, Top Dollar Angus General Manager jared@topdollarangus.com 660-492-2777

Member News The ranch encompasses more than 235,000 acres, where owners Catherine and Art Nicholas raise nearly 5,000 head of Red Angus cattle and feed almost 7,500 head of cattle in their feedlot, and the quality American Quarter Horses needed to operate the ranch. While the ranch honors tradition, the Nicholases also strive to be leaders in innovation. The ranch produces a ranch-totable beef product, with divisions that include not only the horses and cattle, but also farming and outfitting. “The Wagonhound’s remuda is as versatile as its ranch is diversified,” said AQHA Director of Ranching Kim Lindsey. “The ranch's horses have proved their worth and quality both on the ranch and in the show arena. Wagonhound Land & Livestock is a very progressive outfit that is also well balanced with old and new traditions.” The ranch’s vision statement is “Steadfast in maintaining the highest standards,” and that is easy to see in its equine breeding program. The program focuses on creating a horse that will perform on the ranch, but also has the ability to succeed at the top levels of performance events such as cutting, reining, reined cow horse and ranch events. The ranch owns WR This Cats Smart, the 2017 leading sire of the National Reined Cow Horse Association, and has assembled the highest quality of mares for its broodmare band. Wagonhound has bred the earners of more than $2 million across disciplines. Performers include Some Like It Hott ($183,383), The Cuteness ($89,805) Peptos Opus Cat ($87,456) and Shiners Diamond Cat ($82,426). The ranch’s remuda also includes Stressolena ($74,781), Dual With A Shiner ($73,005), Reys Stressin Melody ($51,668) and This Cats King ($21,455).

Any ranch that registers five or more American Quarter Horses each year for ranch work and is a Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder is eligible for this award. The award was formally presented to Wagonhound Land & Livestock during the 2018 Working Ranch Cowboys Association World Championship Ranch Rodeo, November 7-11 in Amarillo. Wagonhound will also be recognized during the 2019 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in New Orleans and at the 2019 AQHA Convention in March in Fort Worth, Texas.
