Red Angus – Maternal Masterpiece of the Industry
For many – if not all of us in the beef production business – the last few months have been challenging to say the least. It seems our most formidable adversary has been the weather. For many of us who calve in the early part of the year, those challenges sometimes seem almost relentless. It is challenging to just get everything fed and watered, let alone keep an eye on the calving herd.
After 29 years in the Red Angus business, I still marvel at the ability of the Red Angus cow as she gets to the business of producing life. The majority of the time she is best left alone to get the job done. Many generations of maternal instinct run through her blood and the Red Angus cow is a master of producing progeny year after year with little to no interference from us. For many years, the maternal masterpiece that is the Red Angus cow was a very well-kept secret. In more recent history, that secret has come to the attention of cattle producers worldwide. This statement is backed up by Superior Livestock Auction’s hard facts on the females marketed over their service. Consistently, Red Angus-influenced females selling on Superior are the most highly appraised and sought-after females of any breed influence. This can be attributed to the hard work and foresight of both the purebred breeder that supplies the sires of these cattle and the commercial producer for seeking out the Red Angus genetics which allow them to not only top the market, but also perpetuate the female bloodlines which make their operation a successful beef production business. There is a reason that, while many other breeds are struggling to survive, the Red Angus breed has seen significant growth. The cows are just plain and simple that good! They offer a multifaceted portfolio
6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
to the beef business not matched or duplicated by any other breed or breed-influenced female. The Red Angus female excels in calving ease, fertility, mothering ability, and a low cost of production just to name a few. These are the traits that make the Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced female the No. 1 female in the business. Many other breeds have risen to prominence for a short period of time and then faded from favor as the maternal traits of many were lacking. The Red Angus female has weathered these storms of popularity, quietly keeping her head down while doing what she does best and, until recently, going unnoticed by the industry. In a conversation I had with a longtime cattleman who is somewhere in his mid to late 70s, he stated, “You know the reason that other breeds are trying to form partnerships with the Red Angus don’t you? It’s not because they think they will make Red Angus better. It’s because they are looking for something to make them better!” Sage words to ponder. An analogy I think fits quite well is as follows: A great mechanic only equipped with a pair of pliers is less than average in his trade. In the beef business, the Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced female is the whole tool chest for the professional to work with. The question I pose to you is, “Are you working with just a single tool or are you working with the best tool box available?”

Red Angus More Prevalent in College and University Herds
Agricultural colleges and universities play an important role in educating young people destined to become the next generation of producers and leaders in the livestock industry. Even for those who grew up on a farm or ranch, a college-level education is a great place to start when preparing for a career in the cattle business or any part of American agriculture.
However, the role of these institutions does not stop there. Through Extension services and many other types of outreach programs, they also provide a large array of continued learning and training opportunities for adults, many of whom have been engaged in agricultural enterprises for years or even decades. University-level research impacts the agribusiness and food industry in a positive way, which is yet another important area of contribution. Most of us educated in agricultural colleges or universities have great memories of the time we spent there, what we learned and the people we met. Lifelong friends and colleagues are one of the most gratifying byproducts of being part of the formal education system beyond high school. Staying connected and doing what we can to help those institutions is something we care deeply about, and interestingly, it is something in which Red Angus is becoming increasingly involved. During the past several years, new Red Angus herds have been – or are in the process of being – established at multiple universities and
8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
colleges around the nation. RAAA and its members have been an active part of getting these herds going. For example, last summer RAAA personnel met with leaders at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, to discuss their interest in establishing a high-quality, fall-calving Red Angus herd that would ultimately be used in their teaching and research programs. With the help of generous RAAA members and the Red Angus Foundation, Inc., more than 100 embryos were donated and implanted into TAMU recipient cows in December 2018 and January 2019. Trek 1,600 miles north, and Montana State University has also been building and expanding their Red Angus cowherd, in part, with the help of semen donated by RAAA members. We are happy to be a part of these efforts, as it will be great exposure for the Red Angus breed. The strength and usefulness of Red Angus females and the breed overall is catching on in many different parts of the beef industry, including the educational sector.
Association Commentary Below, in no particular order, is a partial listing of colleges and universities that either already have established Red Angus cowherds, or are in the process of planning or building a herd. • Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas • Jones College, Laurel, Mississippi • Frank Phillips College, Borger, Texas • McNeese State University, Lake Charles, Louisiana • Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana • University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri • Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas • Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma • Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas
Another good example of an alreadyin-motion project in which RAAA is engaged is with McNeese State University in Louisiana. A group of McNeese State’s commercial Red Angus cows are being tested with the Red Navigator commercial DNA profile test. Results will be used in education with McNeese’s students and with Red Angus breeders and commercial genetic users as well. RAFI is funding this project, with DNA test outcomes available early this spring.
Red Angus is proud to work with each of these reputable educational institutions and support their efforts to successfully reach their goals.

Marketing Update by Gary Fike, Former Director of Commercial Marketing, and Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Communications Director
Red Angus Females: Most Highly Valued in the Beef Industry
If you haven’t heard the news that Red Angus females are the beef industry’s mostfavored female, you might want to double check your news source.

The fact is firmly established through university research, using multiple years of Superior Livestock price data, that Red Angus females are the most highly valued female by ranchers and farmers. This statement is true for both Red Angus heifer calves and bred heifers. The Red Angus female offers many benefits and can provide tremendous value to every cow-calf herd from coast to coast. It’s no wonder that year after year, Red Angus females sell at a sizable price advantage compared to Angus, Charolais and English-breed crosses, as well as females of other breeds and combinations. Just how sizable is this price advantage? Superior Livestock data from 20102017 analyzed by M.J. Smith and coworkers at Kansas State University showed that Red Angus-sired bred heifers brought an average price of $1,711, besting Angus-sired bred heifers by $140 per head and English x Continental bred heifers by $133 per head. Additionally, Red Angus females brought $177 per head more than the base value for Brahman-influenced bred heifers (see graph). “Price directly reflects value to the buyer,” said Tom Brink, CEO of the

Red Angus Association of America. “The sole reason Red Angus bred heifers out-sell all breeds on Superior video sales is because the cow-calf producers who purchase them find them more valuable than other breeds and breed crosses.”
“I appreciate how calm and easy to work with Red Angus females are and, as a general rule, they are efficient and moderately sized. They have good, uniform udders and their heat tolerance, uniformity and mothering ability are also very desirable,” attested Brorsen.
These data confirm that Red Angus females can position commercial producers to thrive in today’s challenging market. Their longevity, fertility, adaptability and efficiency, coupled with their good disposition, make them the ideal cow for today’s producer.
Producers all over the United States, just like Brorsen, are realizing the value of Red Angus females for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the most valuable application is the fact that “they hit the ground running as mama cows,” according to Brorsen. What more could you want than a herd of reliable, productive stock cows?
Verl Brorsen of Perry, Oklahoma, has been raising and marketing Red Angus bred heifers for nearly a decade. A neighbor convinced him to give Red Angus a chance and, after raising and marketing his first group of females, Brorsen – who had been raising black Angus previously – said he jumped on the Red Angus bandwagon and never looked back.

Marketing Update
Bertz to Lead Red Angus Commercial Marketing Team
The Red Angus Association of America is pleased to announce that Harold Bertz will spearhead the RAAA commercial marketing team as its new director of commercial marketing, effective in early March.
As the director of commercial marketing, Bertz will lead the marketing team in developing and promoting Red Angus marketing programs that will help producers increase their profitability. Additionally, he will focus on building and strengthening relationships with feeders and packers to increase demand for Red Angus genetics. “I am very excited for this opportunity to continue working with the breeders, commercial cattlemen and women, and the team at RAAA,” said Bertz. “The commercial marketing team has always focused on creating value for calves produced by Red Angus bulls and we will continue to develop innovative programs that assist ranchers in improving their cowherds and their bottom lines.” A sixth-generation rancher, Bertz has many decades of experience in the agriculture and beef industries. First, as an agriculture educator in Missouri where he was nationally recognized for his teaching excellence, and most recently as the RAAA commercial marketing programs coordinator; a role in which he served for the past four and a half years. Bertz received his bachelor’s of education and agricultural education from Missouri State University in 1993, then went on to earn his master’s degree in agricultural education from the University of Missouri. He currently lives in Mayview, Missouri, with his wife Melisa and has two children in college, Molly and August. “Harold has been with RAAA since 2014 and has done great work in helping move RAAA’s marketing programs forward. He knows the breed very well – both its cattle and people – and is well versed in all aspects of the beef industry, from cow-calf to consumer. We also appreciate his common-sense cow savvy and his ability to make complicated issues simple by identifying the key factors that make a difference in the real world of the beef industry,” said CEO Tom Brink. Bertz assumed the responsibilities of the role on March 11, 2019, when Gary Fike departed for an opportunity with Kansas State Research and Extension. Fike and Bertz worked closely together to assure a smooth transition for the association, members and Red Angus producers. n

A weaning worksheet is a pre-printed report for ease of access to listed dams on your inventory for calf reporting. The weaning worksheets may be requested hard copy to report data, or a hard copy can be printed from REDSPro by the member. Data may also be reported via REDSPro. Once the data is reported to the Association, it will be pulled into the weekly EPD analysis.

Heifer Exposure Inventory Total Herd Reporting (THR) allows the RAAA to provide you and your customers with the most unbiased and reliable EPDs in the industry. It also allows for the calculation of Reproductive EPDs; Calving Ease Direct (CED), Heifer Pregnancy (HPG), Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) and Stayability (STAY). By providing heifer exposure data you allow the RAAA to be the only breed association to completely describe reproduction. HPG EPD is used to predict the differences in the pregnancy rate of bulls’ daughters developed and exposed to calve as 2-year-olds. HPG is as heritable as most growth traits such as weaning weight and yearling weight.

Member Services Bulletin This Heifer Exposure Inventory and following THR inventories provide the RAAA with the information necessary to produce the Heifer Pregnancy EPD which producers can use to increase the fertility in their cow herd. What should be reported regarding heifer exposure? Yearling Heifers 9-17 months of age appear on the prelisted inventory and will be entering the herd inventory and be subject to assessments in 2019. The information to report is: • Breeding season dates • Exposure information • Contemporary group designation • Disposal information (if applies) Why would females be inactivated? Inactivations for Spring Inventory Occur in May?
Females are inactivated if no data (calf data, reason code or disposal code) was reported for the respective calving season. If a No Progeny Report was received in March and no calf data was reported, then that female(s) is subject to inactivation. Inactivation means that the female is removed for active inventory. If the female(s) stays inactivated for less than 6 months and a calf is then reported for her, there is a $25 reactivation fee. If the female(s) stays inactivated for over 6 months and a calf is then reported, there is a $50 reactivation fee. How to keep inactivation’s from happening: • Submit a calf record – through weaning – including calves born dead or that died before weaning (with disposal code). If the calf is reported with a disposal code 5 or

above, all birth information is required for data entry. -Or• For no calving record, please submit a reason code for Spring 2017. 1. Open, moved to next year 2. Donor cow/ET 3. Exposed and failed to conceive, moved to next season 4. Recipient cow/ET 5. Aborted/Premature 6. Exposed and failed to conceive, moved to next year 7. Open, moved to next calving season For animals no longer in your herd: • You may indicate animals that have been sold or disposed of using the proper disposal code. • Do nothing. Animals will remain inactivated. ■

Faux Meat, Real Threat by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications
Imagine a wide-open pasture in the rolling basins of Montana. Springs are flush with snowmelt, grass is green and the weather has begun trending towards warm. You drive into a pasture devoid of cows yet full of windmills and llamas. The year is 2030 and lab-grown meat and alternative proteins have taken over the meat counter. No longer is there a need for live cattle since protein is mass produced in Boise and sold across the Pacific Northwest for the same price as 90/10 ground beef.
Sound far-fetched? Maybe, but not by much. You might think that alternative meat products aren’t serious competitors to a medium-rare ribeye, but you’d only be partially right. Alternative proteins are quickly taking up more space in the marketplace. For example, Beyond Burger, the firm that claims to have created “the revolutionary plant-based burger that looks, cooks and satisfies like beef,” grew from $80,000 in sales to $10.1 million in sales in just one year. For those in the back who didn’t quite hear me, this alternative meat company grew more than 12,000 percent in one
year. Additionally, beef substitutes grew by 25 percent last year. For those of us who operate in the tight margins of the beef industry, that growth is worth undivided attention. There’s also the impending reality of lab-grown meat to consider; burgers that are grown in a petri dish and made from fetal bovine serum. You and I might think that sounds foul, however the goal of lab-grown meat, according to plant-based food company Hampton Creek, is to create a more sustainable product that doesn’t require “the hassle and waste of cattle production.” Cultured meat is out to gain customers
28 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
who love meat but want it more sustainably – the target audience is not vegans and vegetarians. Although, when it comes to a moral argument, slaughter and extracting fetal blood from an unborn calf is possibly a more disturbing way to get meat. “But, but – real beef tastes better!” Yes, it most certainly does taste better, and consumers love beef. In fact, 90 percent of consumers say they love the taste of beef. However, near the top of the list of reasons why consumers choose alternative meats is this big, bold word: sustainability.
Faux Meat, Real Threat We know, as ranchers, there is no substitute for real beef. We know that the U.S. beef industry is sustainable. However, our definition is vastly different than that of the average, older millennial parent. They know that plant-based substitutes are different than real beef, but they have real, legitimate concerns about water use, animal health, air quality and emissions, etc. And those concerns lead to doubt about whether or not their beef purchase is negatively impacting our planet. Data from HealthFocus International show that 60 percent of U.S. consumers claim to be reducing their consumption of meat-based products. Additional data from Allied Market Research suggests the plant-based food industry could bring in $5.2 billion in sales by next
year, and that means a hefty increase in meat alternatives that could be hitting the shelves. Obviously, there are many tangible benefits to real beef, other than taste – specifically, price. For example, a beef burger patty is 65 percent cheaper than its plant-based alternative and ground beef is 39 percent cheaper than ground meat “replacements.” Surprisingly, steak is only 10 percent more expensive than a plant-based steak alternative – although 200 percent more flavorful and satisfying. Conversely, the first prototype of a lab-grown burger was $330,000 in 2013 and Beyond Meat charges $12 per pound for a plant-based ground beef alternative. What does all this consumer data mean?
30 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
Firstly, plant-based meat alternatives and lab-grown meat have a long way to go before they are competitive from a pricing standpoint – many American families don’t have the budget to pay $12 per pound for a ground beef alternative. However, as aforementioned, alternative protein companies are gaining ground and learning how to be more efficient. Next, farmers and ranchers from all segments of the industry need to critically evaluate their production practices to determine where improvements can be made; two noteworthy areas are soil and water conservation. For example, soil health can be improved by planting cover crops, which increases organic matter in the soil and consequently enables the soil to hold more water.

Faux Meat, Real Threat Good grazing management also increases pastures’ water absorption and decreases water runoff, thereby making pastures more drought-resistant. A sustainability factor that is often overlooked is the percentage of cows that have a live calf every year. According to Dr. Jude Capper, renowned livestock sustainability expert, only about 90 percent of cows have a live calf every year in the U.S. In countries like Brazil, that number dips to 50-60 percent. On a global basis, if every cow had a calf every year, it would be a stark improvement in beef’s overall sustainability footprint. Consider the amount of resources that are wasted when a cow takes a calf to full-term but loses it before or
during calving. The pain we feel is multi-pronged and real. How do we improve our calving rates? Choosing above-average genetics, providing proper nutrition during gestation and employing management practices that lead to successful calving seasons. Of course, these things are all easier said than done, but hopefully you’re aware of how little things done repeatedly – and well – can have a big impact over time. These are the kinds of outcomes that lead to increased consumer confidence in beef’s sustainability and, consequently, repeat buyers of beef. Let me put it this way – if your bred heifer customers say, “I care
about calving ease,” that’s where you would put your focus. When consumers say, “We care about sustainable meat,” why would you not listen to that direct, portending feedback? Honestly, I don’t personally believe that meat alternatives are going to completely push beef out of the marketplace. According to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, 2018 retail beef demand is 15 percent higher than in January 2012 – as I’ve said before, Americans love beef. They just want confirmation that it’s being raised ethically and sustainably. Otherwise, they will purchase foods that give them a sense of moral validation about their choices. Will your operation provide that validation? n

Benefits of a Shortened Breeding Season by Jaclyn N. Ketchum, Cliff Lamb, and Michael F. Smith, Division of Animal Sciences, University of Missouri, and Department of Animal Science, Texas A&M University Efficiency, sustainability, productivity and profitability – these words are used in conversations around the world including among cattlemen. How do cattlemen assimilate these goals into their herd? One way is by implementing a defined breeding season. “Heifers that conceive earlier in the breeding season will calve earlier in the calving season and have a longer interval to rebreeding. Calves born earlier in the calving season will also be older and heavier at weaning,” stated Robert Cushman of U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. He added, “Heifers that calved early in the calving season with their first calf had increased longevity and kilograms weaned, compared with heifers that calved later in the calving season.” Increased longevity and heavier weaning weights are two points that Cushman made. How does one go about increasing the proportion of females that conceive earlier in the breeding season? Perhaps the first place to start is a defined breeding season which translates into a defined calving season. This strategy is attractive not only because of the aforementioned advantages, but also for more uniform group management regarding nutrition and implementation of vaccination protocols.
Once a producer decides to shorten the breeding season, the task may seem daunting. Where do I start? How short a breeding season is practical? What if a large proportion of females come up open the first year? Am I really going to see an increase in profitability? Fortunately, producers can learn from experiences of others who have systematically shortened the breeding season without a decrease in profitability. The University of Florida-North Florida Research and Education Center Beef Herd provides an excellent example of the benefits of reducing the length of a breeding season. Prior to 2008, bulls were turned in with heifers and cows for a 120-day breeding season. In 2008, Dr. Cliff Lamb, now Department Head at Texas A&M University, and his team implemented multiple reproductive management procedures, including estrous synchronization and fixed-time AI, to increase the proportion of females that conceive early and thereby decrease the length of the breeding season.
36 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
Lamb stated, “Prior to 2008 the breeding season was 120 days in length, and we felt that by committing to an estrous synchronization and AI program, we could shorten the breeding season and increase calf value. Committing to a fixed-time AI (FTAI) program required significant work and dedication, especially during the first four years because the length of the breeding season resulted in an extended calving season, such that cows were calving past the initiation of the next breeding season.” Lamb said that while implementing this strategy required some effort after reducing the breeding season over five years from 120 to 70 days, almost all cows calved prior to initiation of the breeding season and were exposed to a single FTAI at the initiation of the breeding season. The net result was a more compact calving season that increased the value of calves by $169 per calf or an annual increase in calf value for the 300-head operation of $50,700 per year.

“I think the biggest challenge on this ranch is preventing problems rather than fixing them,” says Jason Held, ranch manager. “Vista is really good insurance for us and the feed yard.” Only Vista vaccines offer the most complete, longest-lasting respiratory protection for your cattle — and one-dose fetal protection for your cow herd.1,2 Get reliable protection. Benefits of a Shortened Breeding Season Since implementing a defined breeding season, Steffan said, “The type of cow that works under our management is starting to become evident. They need to be of moderate frame with the ability to stay in good flesh year-round with minimal supplementation. Red Angus has helped us achieve these goals by being able to meet our needs. We select genetics for a maternal female that will have good feet, a good udder, fleshing ability and longevity. We feel what really sets Red Angus apart is the docility of the cattle. The steer calves from these cows can go into the feedlot and perform with the best in the industry. They really are the complete package.”
Prior to shortening the breeding season, pregnancy rates were 81 to 86 percent. Following implementation of FTAI in 2008, pregnancy rates generally increased from 84 to 92 percent to 94 percent. Also, the average calving date steadily decreased from 79.2 to 38.7 days, indicating that a larger proportion of calves were born earlier in the calving season, which increased calf age and weight at weaning. The first-year that estrous synchronization and AI was implemented, the per calf value increased by $87. What if this approach is not quite what a producer had in mind or may seem out of reach? Perhaps the producer already has a defined breeding season but wants to shorten it further to obtain additional benefits or maybe the use of estrous synchronization and artificial insemination are not an option for the first few years. A second example demonstrates how Tellan and Kayla Steffan of Amidon, North Dakota, managed to reduce the breeding season length of their commercial Red Angus herd from 60 to 45 days. Steffan explained why they wanted to reduce the number of days in their breeding season. “The decision to shorten our breeding season to 45 days was based on two factors: 1) we wanted to get away from calving in winter weather; and 2) we wanted a more uniform, consistent calf crop.” To avoid winter calving, they had to calve later. “We figured that if we could calve later in the year, but have more cows calve in a tighter window of time, the average birth date would not move all that much compared to having a longer breeding season,” said Steffan. In 2015, a 61-day breeding season was in place. In 2016 the Steffans implemented several changes, including shortening the breeding season to 45 days. “One thing that initially hurt the pocketbook was having about 20 percent of the cows open in the fall after tightening the breeding season,” said Steffan. “However, after looking at the cows in the open pen – mostly hard-doing cows that
Tellan, Kayla and Will Steffen were less fertile – we saw that there would be beneficial effects long-term. Therefore, we were able to cull some cows that don’t fit our environment.” In 2017, the Steffans initiated an estrous synchronization protocol and FTAI, however, they left the breeding season length the same as the year before. The 2018 calf crop represented the first set of AI-sired calves. “In 2018, we tightened the breeding season another five days. We artificially inseminated all the cows on one day and left the bulls out for 40 days. Again, the hard-doing cows showed up in the open pen, however, this time there were less of them,” Tellan commented. “We finally saw a more uniform, consistent calf crop in the fall of 2018. When we started in 2015, we had five different weight groups of steer calves the day we sold. By the fall of 2018, every steer on the place went in the same draft, and that was pretty neat to see,” said Steffan. “The calves were somewhat lighter on shipping day by moving to a later calving date, but with a shorter breeding season they were more uniform. We get paid more per pound, and our inputs of labor, time, fuel and feed have decreased significantly, not to mention our quality of life has improved.”
38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
Transitioning to a Defined Breeding Season Producers who have a year-long breeding season but want to implement a defined breeding season should access an article authored by Dr. Les Anderson titled, “Some Ideas on Converting from Year-Round Calving to a Controlled Calving Season.” This article may be accessed at https://u.osu.edu/beef/2016/07/20/ some-ideas-on-converting-from-yearround-calving-to-a-controlled-breeding-season/. It outlines eight steps producers should implement to convert from year-round calving to a controlled calving season. Anderson has been collecting data from 75 different farms that have data from pre- and post-implementation of the strategy he proposed. Anderson said, “So far, we have increased pounds weaned per cow exposed 154 pounds on average after the second year.” Producers who are interested in implementing a defined breeding season but are apprehensive should contact their Extension office or beef specialist for additional ideas better suited for their operation. If you have further questions or wish to see a timeline of how the breeding season was systematically shortened, please contact Jaclyn Ketchum at jnkcvz@mail.missouri.edu. ■

Abortion-Causing Parasitic Infection Common, Yet Manageable by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine Neospora Caninum is one of the most common causes of bovine abortion, especially in intensively managed cows, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual, one of the most reputable sources for referencing animal health concerns. Alarmingly, the common yet manageable bovine abortion-causing infection often goes undetected simply due to the fact that producers are unaware it exits. This stark description of Neospora Caninum may seem drastic and was to Dr. Don Coover even as recently as 20 years ago. Now to Coover, a DVM in southeast Kansas, the Merck description is spot-on. “This is a relatively recent problem in terms of diseases,” Coover explained about the parasitic infection of which few are aware. “The first time it was found to cause bovine abortion, to my knowledge, was in 1987 in a dairy herd in New Mexico.” Coover graduated from veterinary school in 1986 and was not made aware of the infection as part of his schooling because it simply was not on anyone’s radar. Cattle are one of the intermediate hosts of this parasite that causes midto late-term abortions in infected dams. “If you live in the Midwest area of the U.S. like I do, you likely have cows and heifers infected with this organism, and it is costing you pregnancies and calves.” Coover explained, “The incidence we found in a fairly large study we did several years ago showed 8.9 percent of 5,800 cows tested were infected. The cows sampled or tested were from Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas. That works out to about one out of every 11 cows.” Contracting the Infection Neospora Caninum is a parasitic infection contracted by cattle through

Coover cited multiple cases where, after silage piles or large round bales were defecated on by canines, the feed was mixed for a large herd and then administered to the cattle. Fecal contamination of feed stuffs is the primary source for horizontal transmissions of the parasite. Not all pregnancies are aborted, and infections passed from dam to offspring are referred to as vertical transmissions. Live calves born to infected dams are infected with Neospora at birth greater than 85 percent of the time, according to

Coover’s research. Upon maturity, these females will either abort pregnancies or give birth to an infected calf. If an infected mother’s calf is female, the calf should be tested for infection. Live bull calves that are infected with the parasite are not able to transmit the infection to herdmates. Coover explained that some calves born alive to infected dams may lack the sucking reflex. “If you do histology on the brainstem of infected calves that die, you’ll often find diagnostic lesions.” He said these lesions are what interrupt the suck reflex which is dependent on a normal brain stem.

Abortion-Causing Parasitic Infection Common, Yet Manageable “The calves will act a little dull but may otherwise appear normal. You’ll find them starved to death in five or six days because they won’t nurse since they lack the sucking reflex.” Diagnosing the Infection Unfortunately, the only indication of Neospora infection in mature cattle is abortion, often late term. Coover said, “The only current method of controlling the abortion problem due to Neospora infections in cattle is to test for the carrier status in your cows and heifers, and then to select against the carriers. Parasiticides, or wormers, do not affect the parasite, and won’t guard against infections or the abortions the infections cause.” The test used to detect Neospora infection requires a blood or serum sample in a red-top tube and costs a producer around $5 per animal tested. Infection Obliteration “This is one of the most common causes of pregnancy loss but it is easy to fix with management,” said Coover. He suggests producers test every female used for reproduction in order to
begin the process of detection and elimination. Neospora is not region specific nor is it more common in any particular breed that makes up the beef and dairy cow industries. Coover, with his business SEK Genetics, operates a lab that has tested herds throughout the U.S. and has found the infection in nearly every large herds tested – herd of over 100 head. After testing, it is important that producers serious about eliminating the problem select against the carriers. Culling open cows and sending cows who test positive down the road is necessary. In operations with both spring and fall calving programs, Coover cautioned against rolling open cows into the next calving season in hopes that they will breed up, saying this practice almost always masks the real problem which, when tested, is often found to be Neospora. In general, Neospora-positive cows will breed up as well as Neosporanegative cows, but infected cows have a much greater chance of pregnancy loss later in gestation than negative cows. Coover’s research suggests no breed up difference between the in-
fected cows and the non-infected cows. However, if producers check pregnancies 30 days prior to calving, they will see a higher percentage of opens in the infected cows because they abort pregnancies mid- to lateterm. Embryo transfer can be a great option for prized cows who test positive for Neospora. The infection is passed during gestation, so embryos are free from the infection. Producers can harvest embryos from genetically valuable cows, place the embryos in tested-free recips, and produce Neospora-free offspring from infected donor dams. He also emphasized herd health in order to keep the infection from flaring. Dogs, coyotes and fox develop the parasitic infection which cause them to shed the infective eggs in their stool by eating the aborted fetuses and tissue from cows and heifers. If cattle producers eliminate the Neospora abortions in their herds, it will tend to cut down on the number of infected canines, which will lessen the level of horizontal transmission. Coover stressed that most Neospora transmission is vertical, transferring from infected dam to offspring. Although the infection seems to be damaging herds across the nation, Coover stressed it is manageable. “I don’t think people should tear their hair out and get out of the cattle business. This is a problem that is pretty easy to irradicate. It isn’t very contagious horizontally. If cattle producers can get away from the vertical transmission – dam to calf – they won’t have very much horizontal transmission. They just need to screen their replacement heifers, and test any cows originally diagnosed pregnant that did not calve.” n
If cattle producers eliminate the Neospora abortions in their herds, it will tend to cut down on the number of infected canines, which will lessen the level of horizontal transmission.

New Red Angus Stayability EPDs are Effective in the Real World by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement It is well documented that a cow’s ability to remain in the herd and produce calves every year is the largest driver of producer profitability. So, the STAY EPD is very important. However, the heritability of this trait is low and therefore using EPDs for making selection decisions is the most effective tool to make genetic progress. Stayability is defined as the ability (or lack thereof) to produce five calves within successive years starting first as a 2-year-old.
With the implementation of the IGS Multi-Breed Analysis powered by BOLT, a new methodology was used for calculating EPDs for STAY. This statistical methodology is known as random regression. Random regression is designed to evaluate data over time like calving records used in the STAY analysis. This approach is superior to previous methodology used to calculate STAY EPDs. Ultimately, breeders want to know if the new STAY EPDs are reliable predictors in the real world, so let’s find out using actual calving records from a very large number of herds. To compare differences in daughter performance for differing levels of sire STAY EPD, over 300,000 cows sired by registered Red Angus bulls were analyzed. Sires of these females were divided into four groups based on their STAY EPD percentiles. In order for a sire to be included in the analysis, he must have sired at least one female progeny that was retained as a replacement. Then the average number of calves produced by
daughters of each of these sires was compared within each EPD quartile from high to low. The graph above illustrates the average number of calves produced by each of the daughters in the quartile groups. More lifetime calf production by each female is what we all want. Note that a distinct trend is apparent. Sires with higher STAY EPDs had daughters that remained in the herd longer and produced more progeny. Furthermore, as the STAY percentile decreased toward the bottom of the bell curve, the average number of calves also decreased.
48 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
Perhaps most importantly, when daughters from both sides of the sire STAY EPD distribution (1-24 percent versus 75 percent or higher) are compared, the difference in average calves produced is greater than one calf per cow lifetime. When we think about this on a herd, breed or industrywide basis, it becomes easy to see how improving Stayability can provide very profitable and beneficial outcomes for any operation. Purchased and Delivered But are They Transferred? by Kacey Koester, Top Dollar Angus Field Representative
After the completion of the spring bull sale season, thousands of Red Angus bulls will be headed to their new ranch and their new set of cows. The finances, health papers and brand documents will be exchanged, but many bulls will never be transferred to their new owner through the Red Angus Association of America.
While this may seem like an insignificant detail, to some this can be very frustrating and, as a commercial producer, you may be missing out on information available at your fingertips. Having animals transferred to your name isn’t just about the title at the top of the registration paper. It is more so about the ability to have a complete bull inventory profile for your operation. The opportunities to sort data in REDSPro as a bull buyer can greatly help you gain a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses in your bull battery. Our breed has supplied countless methods to monitor and create genetic trends and improvements to help their breeders and commercial cattlemen advance their herd in production efficiency. One vital component to a proper genetic evaluation is a comprehensive list of your bull-purchase history. While many bull buyers keep substantial records of their bull purchases over the years with their seedstock providers, having all bulls transferred, creating a comprehensive list with RAAA can eliminate questions like, “He was Lot 52 in the
2017 bull sale, right? Or was it the 2016 bull sale? I can’t find his registration number!” Customer service is undoubtedly a strong driving force behind the success of a seedstock provider. The ability to provide customers with the full ownership of their animal, both physically and through the RAAA, aids seedstock providers in improving their customer service. They provide their customers access to their bull purchases and the abundance of continually updated information for their personal use in their operation. Accurate, reliable transfer records can not only eliminate headache, but also be a valuable resource to seedstock suppliers and commercial producers. Commercial producers have been sorting and purchasing genetically verified bulls for years and are now trying to sell their calves with the same standards. However, it is up to the seedstock provider to ensure the transfer of this genetic information to the new owner. The RAAA makes the process of transferring animals to their new owner very simplistic, especially
with REDSPro. The Association also offers free transfers up to 60 days after the sale date of the animal. The value of information and good records are vital, especially in today’s beef industry. A complete bull inventory can also assist in the simplicity of enrolling in several value-added programs such as the Feeder Calf Certification Program and Top Dollar Angus. Knowing all the information behind the bulls you are turning out every breeding season is crucial to genetic improvement. It is also crucial to know the bulls you have turned out in previous years that are a strong genetic component to your cowherd. Maternal grandsires are an excellent way to gather a simple genetic evaluation on your cowherd but are often the most difficult for which to track information due to age. With a complete bull inventory, the process of finding and improving strengths and weaknesses in your bull battery and cowherd becomes efficient and effective, as well as provides reliable documentation for genetic verification and program enrollments which open doors to marketing opportunities. ■

Youth Shine with Red Angus Steers in Catch-A-Calf Program by Jeananne Mosher, REDSPro and Show Specialist, and Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator This year the Catch-A-Calf events took place Jan. 11-13 at the National Western Stock Show in Denver culminating a year’s worth of dedication to the program. Thirty-nine 4-H members completed the program which started with an application and verification and catching a proxy calf in the arena during a NWSS rodeo performance.
NWSS utilizes the money that the Catch-A-Calf sponsors provide to procure the calves for this event. For the past two years they have purchased Red Angus calves from Wagonhound Land and Livestock Co. of Douglas, Wyoming, who will again source the calves for this year’s program. “We like to purchase all the calves from one ranch so they are consistent in quality and weight,” said Clancy Anderson, NWSS livestock coordinator. “When we toured the Wagonhound, we were very impressed with the operation, the cat-
tle and the history of the ranch. We felt it would be an ideal partnership for the Catch-A-Calf program.” Over the course of the program, participants fed and cared for their steer. They maintained management and financial records, submitted progress reports to NWSS, and built a relationship with their sponsor(s). Participants were encouraged to exhibit their steer at county and state fairs, the NILE, and other regional shows and clinics. Many utilized these opportunities to prepare their calf for the final show at NWSS.
56 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
“Show day is exciting and different than a typical show,” said Anderson. “All the kids enter the stadium and tie their calves around the arena to watch and cheer on their fellow Catch-A-Calf exhibitors.” While the steers competed for production, quality of fitting and live evaluation, the exhibitor was judged on several factors. These factors include showmanship, their record book and a personal interview before a panel of judges that includes a short, prepared speech. The scores from the different events are added together for their final score.
“The top two exhibitors are named Grand and Reserve Champion earning the right to sell their steers in the NWSS Junior Livestock Auction right behind the champions of all other species, usually for a substantial premium over market price,” said Anderson. This year Kara Reynolds of Laramie, Wyoming, and Megan Schroeder of Wisner, Nebraska, topped the 39 total 4-H’ers and entries. In the carcass division, Isaiah Waite of Morrill, Nebraska, earned top honors, and Kelsee Moffat of Oshkosh, Nebraska, took second. Many participants have found their interest in the industry through their involvement in this event. Skyla Jones of Bennett, Colorado, shared how this program helped her find her passion. “The Catch-A-Calf program has in-
spired me to become an animal nutritionist. It has made me be more aware of the cattle industry. The most impactful thing for me was the project teaching me how to feed out cattle and learning about the industry standards for cattle production.”
production, management record keeping and financial responsibility. It is so rewarding to visit with past participants and hear their success stories that started with catching a calf in our program. It really solidifies the reasons we continue the Catch-A-Calf program.”
“This program is about so much more than a steer calf or a sale premium,” concluded Anderson. “The networking with sponsors and peers is invaluable as is the hands-on education in beef
Results from the show are online at nationalwestern.com. Applications for the 2019-20 program are due Dec. 1, 2019, and can be found online at nationalwestern.com/catch-a-calf-program/. ■

RAFI Funds Project with McNeese State University
The Red Angus Foundation, Inc. has approved a grant request for a demonstration project with the animal science department at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Gary Fike, former director of commercial marketing for the Red Angus Association of America, and Darrin Goodwin, instructor and farm and ranch manager at McNeese State, collaborated on the project to demonstrate the use of DNA technology on replacement females and their subsequent progeny.
tested females to be compared with the DNA results. There is also a database of prior history from the past progeny of the tested females to have, in fact, perhaps two to five years’ worth of data to be compared for traits like marbling, ribeye area, carcass weight, weaning weight and yearling weight.
“This project is important in several ways,” said Fike. “First of all, it helps educate the animal science students on DNA technology and how it relates to phenotype. Secondly, it allows the RAAA to further show the value that this technology can impact on the commercial producer. And third, it shows a spirit of cooperation in education and practical demonstration between academia and a breed association.”
Goodwin said, “Students will participate in taking the DNA tissue samples, submitting them, and then learning more about DNA technology and the actual data match up. It will be a fantastic teaching tool, and all parties will benefit.”
The test that will be utilized is Red Navigator, offered by GeneSeek/Neogen. This DNA test is specifically for high-percentage (greater than or equal to 75 percent) Red Angus females, for all of the EPDs currently used by the RAAA. The test will give a percentile ranking of each individual for each EPD, compared with the commercial database.
help the students in learning which animals to keep and which to cull from the current herd.” Calves from the school farm have been in a retained ownership program for several years. This year is no exception with calves being fed out in commercial feedlots in Kansas and Oklahoma. The demonstration will allow carcass data and feedlot performance of the progeny of the
Fike added, “The Red Navigator test is primarily used to help commercial producers in making keep/cull decisions in replacement heifers. In this study, students will not only learn the obvious benefit of comparing the technology with actual results, it may 58 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2019
The first sets of calves from these females will be finished in April, May and June, and participants are looking forward to examining the results. Goodwin further commented, “We appreciate all those who have contributed to RAFI to make these joint projects possible. The Animal Science Department at McNeese State University is grateful for this partnership.” ■

through grade eight and then graduated from Belt Valley High School. In 1961, he headed off to Montana State College in Bozeman to study Animal Science. After numerous interruptions, a college degree was obtained in the spring of 1969. He was then hired by the American Hereford Association as a fieldman, working for the AHA for several years based out of Kansas City, Missouri, living in various states. He then went into ranch management. Eventually he found a spot with the Western Livestock Journal where he was actively engaged for several decades. Livestock insurance added another industry dimension to his numerous capabili-
ties. In addition, he produced the annual Stock Growers Association Directory. Agriculture and the cattle industry were his lifelong occupations. His eternal optimism and gift of gab suited him well over the years. While working in Ohio, the delightful manager of Jerry's apartment building caught his eye. Elaine Adams, raised in New Jersey and living in Ohio, brought a special dimension to Jerry's life. They were married in Kansas City in December of 1973 and before long moved to Billings where sons Josh and Aron completed their family. While there, Jerry, enjoyed many family activities that centered
around fishing, boating and spending time with his wife and sons. In 2008, Jerry and Elaine moved to their present residence north of Belt. In recent years Jerry has found strength through his church and the Knights of Columbus activities, and special visits with relatives, family and old friends. Jerry is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elaine; son Josh of Bozeman and San Diego; son Aron of Bozeman; brothers Gary Gliko of Great Falls, Rick (Barb) Urick of Waxhaw, North Carolina; sisters Debbie (Russ) Sorensen of Butte, Virginia (Bruce) Sorensen of Belgrade,
and Becky Murray of Belgrade; sister-in-laws Jane of Pickerington, Ohio, and Lin of Princeton, New Jersey; brother-in-law Joe Adams of Lancaster, Ohio; and 14 nieces and nephews and their families. ■
