Consumer Relationships will Impact Demand Many challenges face the beef industry. Fortunately, as Red Angus breeders we can have confidence in our cattle and our breed of choice. By every metric, RAAA is in an enviable position. We have the industry’s most-favored female, have enrolled more calves in FCCP than ever before, and have the highest percentage of growth in registrations of all major beef breeds. We now have to look forward and either identify paths or blaze trails as RAAA has in the past to sustain this growth. Red Angus’ success is attributable to the people behind this breed. As a producer that entered this industry later in life with little experience, I’ve always appreciated the people who have helped me grow my business. In my experience, RAAA members and staff are ready, willing and able to support others within our organization. I’ve been blessed with advice and mentorship from more knowledgeable, more accomplished cattlemen and women throughout my career. This spirit of cooperation has made it easy to build relationships and trust that must remain a cornerstone to the strength of our brand. It’s easiest to build meaningful relationships when a brand’s message has reliable substance and merit. This is where our founding principles have provided RAAA the tools to enjoy such substantial growth in recent years. Accurate scientific data will continue to be the greatest asset in promoting our animals and the beef they produce. Red Angus cattle and enthusiasts have a positive, meaningful message to share that’s enabling us to build trusted relationships in all sectors of the beef industry. The growth in Red Angus can be attributed to our brand being able to factually show commercial cattle people how our animals will benefit their bottom line and quality of life by striving for greater efficiency and user-friendly characteristics. Likewise, breeders have done an excep-

6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2019

tional job in selectively breeding cattle that deliver these positive traits. Clearly, our current marketing objectives are working and resonating with packers and producers all across America and is illustrated by our unprecedented growth! Moving forward, it will be important to convey positive information about Red Angus-influenced cattle to beef consumers. This same fact-based approach to increasing efficiency that RAAA uses to market our cattle to commercial cattlemen and packers is precisely what’s needed to establishing trust with consumers. Consumers, purchasers and end users need to be in touch with our story of increased efficiency. As a producer who interacts with customers and culinary professionals daily, I’ve learned that the overwhelming majority of consumers simply seek truth, and yes, a trusted relationship. However, without reading an agricultural publication in print or online, it’s extremely hard for consumers to identify the truths of our industry. While I recognize this is no small feat, it’s an objective that is important. It may take years or even decades to earn consumer trust and recognition but ultimately a relationship with the consumer would be a rewarding benefit. In the coming years, it will be important that RAAA continues to work with packers, retailers and other industry stakeholders to qualify more Red Angus-influenced cattle for additional opportunities, markets and branded programs. These opportunities may come by way of domestic or export markets, the opportunities may be regional or national. In any event, establishing relationships with consumers and increasing demand for our beef will directly impact the value of our cattle. ■

Convention and Innovation Highlight Autumn Dubuque Convention a Tremendous Event

as RAAA President. Re-elected Board members tapped to serve a second three-year term include Stuart Gilbert of Stockport, Iowa, (Area 9), and Chuck Feddes of Manhattan, Montana, (Region A). We also want to recognize two newly elected Board members – Tony Ballinger of Morgan Mill, Texas, (Area 4), and Rob Hess of Hershey, Pennsylvania, (Area 7).

The other goal is always to have some fun and enjoy each other’s company, which was certainly accomplished! The Grand River Hotel and Water Park in Dubuque, Iowa, is located adjacent to the Mississippi River. Watching the barges move up and down the river was interesting and something most of us don’t get to witness very often.

A big THANK YOU goes out to Kyley DeVoe of Justin, Texas, and John Langdon of Benson, North Carolina, as retiring Board members. Both of these gentlemen served six years and contributed in many ways to the continued progress of the breed and Association during their tenure. John and Kyley, thanks again for your selfless service!

The 66th annual National Red Angus Convention was a great success. Attendance was strong with hundreds of breeders, commercial producers, trade show vendors, speakers and other enthusiasts gathering for education and informational updates, as well as to conduct Association business.

Thanks to the Midwest Region’s convention committee and also to Halla Pfeiff and Chessie Mitchell for all their diligence in planning and executing an excellent event. We very much appreciate your hard work! Congratulations goes to Johnny Rogers of Roxboro, North Carolina, for being re-elected to serve a second year

Next year’s National Red Angus Convention will be in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 23-25. Make your plans now to attend. The location of this event is close to Gettysburg and numerous other unique and historic sites, including the well-known Hershey’s Chocolate factory. It’s a great place to take the entire family!

growth and marbling – all packaged in a heat-tolerant, red-colored hide.

RAAA’s Vision and Mission statements both emphasize the word “innovation.” The long history of Red Angus includes many innovative programs and that list will soon be getting longer with the advent of American Red, which is slated for official launch in early February 2020 at the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in San Antonio, Texas. This new program is a cooperative partnership between the RAAA and Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) that will screen, verify and tag Red Angus-Santa Gertrudiscross steers and heifers. Qualified animals can be tagged as American Red animals, thereby providing a unique blend of maternal traits, adaptability,

Join us

The King Ranch of Kingsville, Texas, has extensively tested and positively proven this cross in their harsh South Texas ranching environment during the past two decades. Numerous other breeders in the South and Southeast have also begun to use this cross in their own challenging production environments, and they’ve done so with excellent success. Both the females as replacement heifers and the steers as market animals have a strong place in the Southern beef business as a value-added, built-tospec cattle ‘product.’ We can readily observe how the industry is moving toward a greater degree of specification and verification in the cattle it produces. This new program seeks to take advantage

of that trend by offering commercial producers who utilize Red Angus and Santa Gertrudis – or that may choose to do so in the future – with a proven template for success. More information will be forthcoming in the months ahead as RAAA and SGBI prepare for the launch. This innovative program has huge potential to impact the southern portion of the U.S. beef business, as well as heat-challenged areas where cattle are produced around the globe. Specific details and qualification criteria for American Red are available online at AmericanRed.org. ■

Marketing Update by Nolan Woodruff, Commercial Marketing Specialist

RAAA Recognizes Superior Carcasses with Grid Master Award The Grid Master Award, an honor bestowed by the Red Angus Association of America, is earned by operations that have successfully combined superior Red Angus genetics, feeding management skills and precise marketing to achieve success with the harvest of superior beef carcasses. To be named a Grid Master, cattle must be Red Angus or Red Angus-influenced that are enrolled in the RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program or Allied Access tag program and must achieve a specified level of carcass excellence. The program is open to both conventionally and naturally fed cattle. Conventionally fed Red Angus cattle must be marketed in lots of at least 30 head, reach a minimum of 90% Choice and Prime, have a maximum of 5% Yield Grade 4s and have a minimum grid score of 100. Naturally fed Red Angus cattle must also be marketed in lots of at least 30 head, achieve 90% Choice and Prime, with a maximum of 10% Yield Grade 4s and a minimum grid score of 100. This year 31 loads of cattle representing 1995 head of Red Angus-influenced calves qualified for Grid Master. American Red Program to Meet Commercial Industry Needs by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications

The Red Angus Association of America and Santa Gertrudis Breeders International are collaborating to provide the beef industry with a unique blend of maternal traits, adaptability, growth and marbling – all packaged with a heat-tolerant, red hide – into a new program for the commercial beef producer called American Red. The offspring of this crossbreeding program will be well suited for commercial producers who are seeking quality replacement females and steers that fit in the value-added segment of the beef industry. Tom Brink, RAAA CEO, stated, “This innovative program has huge potential to impact the southern portion of the U.S. beef business, as well as heat-challenged areas where cattle are produced around the globe.” American Red has been tested and proven at the King Ranch of Kingsville, Texas. Numerous other breeders in the southern U.S. have also begun using this strategic cross to combat the harsh environment with marked success.

“This partnership emphasizes the value that the cross provides to an industry desperate for increased longevity, fertility, adaptability and efficiency,” added John Ford, SGBI Executive Director. While the leadership at RAAA and SGBI are still finalizing key details, program specs for American Red will be as follows: • To qualify for the American Red commercial cattle program and accompanying tag, steers and heifers in the same calf crop must be sired by registered Red Angus bulls averaging in the top 50% of the breed for the HerdBuilder index (HB) or registered Santa Gertrudis bulls averaging in the top half of the breed for maternal and growth traits.

• Breed percentages on qualified cattle will range from 25% to 75% Red Angus and 25% to 75% Santa Gertrudis, with a small allowance for other breeds. Most qualified cattle will be red however, color is not an exclusionary requirement. Groups of cattle do not need to be fully red-hided to qualify. • Dams of qualifiable calves must contain at least 50% of the reciprocal breed, meaning 50% or more Santa Gertrudis when the calves are sired by Red Angus bulls, or 50% or more Red Angus when calves are sired by Santa Gertrudis bulls. To verify dam-side genetics, qualifiable herds will sign a verification form stating that at least 50% of the genetic makeup of the dams of calves to be qualified is from the reciprocal breed. • The tag used for this program will be a unique, American Red-labeled tag issued by the RAAA. Tagging options include dangle tags or EID/panel tag combination-nested sets. Calves must be tagged on the ranch of origin. Enrollments in the program will begin in February 2020. The program requires a yearly $50 enrollment fee and a $1.25 fee for each tag. Producers with questions about the pro-gram should contact Chessie Mitchell, RAAA tag program coordinator, at tags@redangus.org or visit www.AmericanRed.org. More information about American Red will be released in the coming months. n

The new American Red program will identify Red Angus-Santa Gertrudis-cross commercial cattle that exhibit maternal traits, adaptability, growth and marbling. Official enrollment for American Red cattle will begin in February 2020. 22 American Red Angus Magazine n November 2019

The End of a Legacy Thank You to Russ Young with the Iron Triangle Ranch of John Day, Oregon for the purchase of the entire Dunn's Double Eagle Ranch Red Angus Herd! Doug and Betty Dunn have been breeders of Registered Red Angus seed stock since the late 1970’s and have had one of the longest ongoing Red Angus operations in the Northwest and U.S. Doug was a cofounder of the Bet On Red Show and Sale Event that is held annually in Reno, Nevada. The Dunn's were definite Pioneers in helping to develop and spread Red Angus genetics throughout the western U.S.

Dunn has also played a very active role in the last 10 years. A true family operation in every sense of the word. New business opportunities dictated the sale of this historic herd but the Dunn's feel confident that the Iron Triangle Ranch will continue the Dunn legacy. Doug and Betty and the whole family wish Russ and his family the best in the future.

Doug and Betty's son David acquired an interest in the herd in the 1990's and has been an integral partner ever since. Grandson Stefan

Member Services Bulletin The fall season has so many good possessions to it like weaning, harvest, trees changing colors, football, cool air and so much more. We know that this is a busy time of year and there are so many important aspects of the business taking place. This is also the time of year to report spring-born calving data to RAAA for registration. Remember to report a calving record or a reason code as to why a female did not calve for each female. Make sure all of the required calving information is provided for each calf whether reporting in REDSPro or paper registration applications. Fall Heifer Exposure – Requested Nov. 11 Heifer exposure is reported for yearling heifers to collect reproductive data on potential replacement heifers. The required information for the heifer exposure reports are the heifer registration numbers, breeding start and end dates and management group code. My Reports To view your current inventory or pull a variety of reports, log in to your REDSPro account and click on Reports/Downloads and My Reports. On the left-hand side choose a default group of animals such as 2019 Born Bulls, or click the individual tab to type in specific registration numbers for your group. On the righthand side, choose a report such as Herd Inventory, then click Generate Report. Members can view Whole Herd Inventory, Spring or Fall Cow Inventory, pull an EPD report, an

SCDE report and many more. These reports can be downloaded in Excel for review. Update Contact Information Whether you are a member or buyer with RAAA it is important to keep your contact information current. Members can update address, phone number, email or other contact information in REDSPro under the My Account tab, or email your account number and updates to info@redangus.org. The National Office sends reminder and notifications electronically through email and REDSPro. If you prefer to receive paper forms, please email info@redangus.org with your member number and request to have reports mailed to you. Final Submit Button In order to finalize a job in REDSPro, the red Final Submit button on the billing page must be clicked. If the

Correcting animals in REDSPro If mistakes were made while submitting calf data, no worries. Several corrections can be processed by the member online in REDSPro. To bring your newly registered calves into a job, go to Data Entry, Online and Manual Job tab. Select a group of animals from the right-hand side such as 2019 Born Bulls, and click Start New Job. This will pre-load the registration numbers for your calves. Once the corrections are made and the job is Final Submitted, the updated information will be instantly uploaded to the database. Corrections can only be made online if you are the current owner of the animal. Corrections can also be emailed to the National Office at info@redangus.org. n

Wishing you and your family and friends a Happy Thanksgiving! The National Office will be closed Nov. 28 and 29 in observance of the holiday.

RAAA Seeks Input for Selection Index Construction by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement

One of the main goals of the RAAA is to provide valuable tools to describe the genetic merit of Red Angus cattle. Currently, the Association provides predictions for 16 different traits. That’s a comprehensive package, however, it often becomes difficult to weigh trade-offs among the different traits.

One worthy tool that is available to promote multi-trait selection is the use of an economic selection index. Indexes use economic analyses to properly weight EPD differences to predict overall profitability. The advantage of using an index to make selection decisions is that it provides a single number that takes into account the trade-offs among traits. This vastly simplifies the selection process versus using other techniques such as independent EPD culling levels to make decisions. The idea of an economic selection index is not new. The idea was first introduced in the 1940s. Many other industries like poultry, pork and dairy cattle have been using selection indexes for some time to make genetic improvement decisions. Many beef cattle breed associations have also adopted the concept of selection indexes in their published list of tools to make breeding decisions. Generally, these indexes can be classified as either an all-purpose, maternal or terminal index. The difference between each of these types of indexes is the situation that is being modeled and the traits included in the index. Maternal indexes are used to predict profitability differences from conception up to weaning. Terminal indexes predict the differences in profitability during the post-wean-

ing phase, geared at animals that will not be retained as replacements. All-purpose indexes are a combination of these sub-indexes that predict profitability across all aspects of the beef industry. The RAAA currently publishes two selection indexes for use by the membership and commercial producers. The GridMaster index is a terminal index that models a situation where bulls are mated to mature females and all resulting progeny are marketed on a quality and yieldbased grid. The HerdBuilder index is an all-purpose index that predicts differences in profitability for bulls that would be mated to heifers and cows. For this index, replacements are generated from within the herd and all non-replacements are marketed on a quality and yield-based grid. The current RAAA indexes were first introduced in 2014. Since that time, many advancements have been made in methodology to calculate selection indexes. The RAAA is committed to providing the most advanced tools to help with genetic selection decisions. Therefore, the decision was recently made to evaluate and update our current selection indexes. The RAAA has partnered with AbacusBio to perform the work on the updated indexes. AbacusBio is an international agri-science con-

sultancy company that has expertise in both the biological and economic aspects of breeding programs. The company has worked with a variety of different livestock organizations developing economic selection indexes. As part of the index construction process, AbacusBio has developed methodology to collect user input to better understand the goals of all members and commercial customers that use Red Angus genetics. The survey is comprised of two main parts that includes information about your operation and the second part will ask a series of choice questions among different traits. The goal of the survey is to try and gather responses from all phases of the beef industry that use Red Angus genetics. You do not need to be a member of the RAAA to complete the survey. To access the survey, please visit RedAngus.org via a computer and a link will be available to complete the survey. The survey will only be available for a limited amount of time and your opinion is extremely valuable to help with this process. Please access and complete the survey at your earliest convivence so that your response can be included. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the National Office. n

Are you Utilizing the Information Already Available on your Ranch? by Kacey Jacobson, Top Dollar Angus Field Representative

Quantifying value in the beef business can be difficult. While it may sometimes be challenging to pencil the dollars and cents returned on spending the extra money for a few better bulls or that improved mineral program, one thing is certain - any mismanaged component in your operation leads to decreased profitability. Buying better bulls is most likely to return little to no profit with a poor nutrition program or a weak vaccination protocol. The same can be said for marketing programs. Crossing all the t’s and dotting all the i’s during the year on your ranch is what we all strive to do. However, many producers lose this tenacity when it comes to marketing the feeder calves on sale day that they have worked so hard to produce. We know there are many factors that affect ranch profitability and some marketing strategies that have been proven to add value to feeder cattle are not attainable on some operations. For instance, weaning calves for 45 to 60 days has been proven time and again to increase the value of a calf crop on sale day. However, some ranches are not setup to have the option of weaning due to facility limitations, feed availability or various other reasons. While this may be out of the ranch’s control, what isn’t out of their control are the many beneficial marketing resources available to them. Some of those resources are internal to the operation in the form of data or information already available that can be used to document extra value in a set of calves.

$ ® There are numerous available valueadded programs ranging from age and source verification like the Red Angus “Yellow Tag” Feeder Calf Certification Program, to health, natural and genetically verified, like Top Dollar Angus. While your ranch may not be able to – or want to – utilize all of these programs, many producers are seeing the benefits of providing more specific information and options to potential buyers on sale day through these programs. You wouldn’t think about buying your next set of bulls with little to no information on them. Why should feedyards buy calves with little to no information? It makes sense to give buyers more reasons to consider buying your calves, and that typically means giving them more information about why your calves are valuable.

Our industry is rapidly evolving into an information-driven market. Taking the next step in your operation’s marketing strategies can be a simple, yet very effective step in improving profitability of your calf crop. There are countless factors that are out of our control raising cattle, with weather being perhaps the most influential to the bottom line. Marketing initiatives, however, are something every producer can control and leverage for their own benefit. Maybe it’s time to take your program’s marketing strategy to the next level. Utilize the information you have already paid for in your bull battery – genetically superior bulls purchased with valuable documentation in the form of EPDs and genomic information. Fasten this with your vaccination protocol or top-notch nutrition program and implement value-added programs into marketing – not just selling – your calf crop. Take the time to visit with representatives from multiple value-added programs and determine which programs will best align with your operation to develop the best marketing strategy on sale day. n

Red Angus Beef Excels in Pasture-to-Plate Market by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

Research shows that 77% of Americans read labels and movements like “buying local” are on the rise. “Pasture to Plate” has taken on a life of its own and Red Angus cattle are playing a pivotal role. The Stickel family in Bowling Green, Ohio, and the Hulls in Tully, New York, both provide consumers in their region with an optimum option for great beef. “Our goal in raising beef is to provide a wholesome, nutritious and safe product for our customers' tables, while realizing the critical responsibilities we have in maintaining the land and resources in a sustainable fashion,” explained Erin Stickel of Stickel Farms, Inc. Although their farm has sold beef for years, the family operation expanded their reach to area communities in recent years as the “buy local” movement expanded. “We sit right in the heart of northwest Ohio and have major metropolitan areas within 20 miles of our home farm.” The farm consists of Andy Stickel and Brian Stickel who take care of daily operations while Andy's wife Erin and parents Dale and MaryElyse Stickel remain involved as well. The diversified operation consists of row crops, processing tomatoes, a hay and straw business, 40 commercial cows (primarily Red Angus-based genetics) and a feedlot where they feed approximately 400 head per year. The calf crop that is raised on the farm is primarily used for the freezer beef business – about 30 head per year.

my husband and I transitioned to beef production in 2002,” said Erin Hull. She and her husband David started with 13 beef cattle to begin raising “good hamburgers” and now their herd is 100% Red Angus in an effort to accomplish that goal.

Lucky 13 Beef prides itself on no antibiotics or growth hormones. “Our cattle are all grass based, rotationally grazing our pastures during the grazing season and eating hay produced on our farm during the winter months – truly pasture to plate.”

The Hulls own and operate Lucky 13 Beef in Tully, New York, and tease that inability to find a good burger was their reason for the operation’s inception. “I grew up on a dairy farm, but

For the Hulls, their all-natural focus caters to the local grass-finished market. Hull explained that Red Angus genetics are a great complement to the grass-finished meat they produce.

In contrast, the Stickels grain finish their beef. “All cattle on our farm are raised with a balanced total mixed ration of grain, forage and minerals,” said Stickel.

The great taste of Red Angus beef creates a loyal, repeat customer base for producers marketing ranch-raised beef.

Red Angus Beef Excels in Pasture-to-Plate Market “Because of our location in the western Lake Erie basin, the soil is extremely fertile and there is little ground suitable or economical for grazing large numbers of cattle. Because there is so little grass for grazing, we bale a significant amount of hay and straw for forage. We utilize cover crops on two-thirds of our acres and during certain years we are able to harvest those for utilization in our TMR.” Stickel Farms pride themselves on keeping the process local as well. “All beef is harvested locally through partnerships with area family-owned processors,” she said. “Our customers can order cuts as desired and pick up at their leisure. We market all product on a per-pound price but require buyers to pay their processing and harvest cost directly to the butcher shop. We are lucky to have five wonderful familyowned butchers within 45 minutes of the farm.” According to both producers, consumers are assured in knowing that their beef was raised and harvested locally. “Customers that realize they can purchase beef raised locally are always thrilled to know that their beef is raised just minutes away from their doorsteps,” said Stickel. The Stickels go even further to promote agriculture. “We often open the farm up to area educational groups, hosting learning events and even virtual tours so consumers can feel comfortable or be knowledgeable about how the livestock are raised and cared for on a daily basis.” Similarly, the Hull family has found an open-door policy to be advantageous. All custom orders are picked up directly from the Lucky 13 Beef headquarters where consumers can see the cow herd. They also host an annual barn dance to allow visitors to experience life in the country for an evening.

Each state has specific requirements for selling meat as does the USDA. “There are requirements that any meat sold across state lines must be harvested at a USDA inspected facility,” said Stickel. “When that does happen, we leverage the one USDA-inspected facility that is within reasonable distance from our farm (45 minutes).” She went on to describe the complications that this causes, and their operation’s adaptations made to adhere to the rules. “Due to the regulations on harvesting and butcher shops, it is becoming more and more difficult to book time at these facilities. We are only selling beef on a wholesale basis thus our local freezer meat customers request their cuts directly to the shop.” In New York, the Department of Agriculture permits direct-marketing businesses, like Lucky 13 Beef, to sell meat as long as the products are processed at an approved food processing facility, prepackaged and properly labeled, and kept at required cold temperatures to prevent spoilage or contamination. Both Stickel Farms Beef and Lucky 13 Beef leverage social media for marketing yet both emphasize the importance of word-of-mouth advertising as being a primary source for new customers. “Our buyer base grows by three to five head per year, and locally most of our beef is sold by the half or quarter, so that constitutes four to eight new customer each year. Social media has been our most powerful sales tool for reaching a wider audience, but we still rely heavily on referrals and customer testimony for greater market penetration,” said Stickel. Likewise, Hull can be found on their Lucky 13 Beef Facebook page posting videos and images of their herd on a daily basis. In a market where diversification and

38 American Red Angus Magazine ■ Novembert 2019

adaptability are encouraged, selling freezer beef brings in a new kind of buyer and allows producers to lean more toward price making than price taking. “For us, the market for homeraised beef is consistent year in and year out,” said Stickel. “The customers that understand the price point for purchasing a whole, half or quarter work through the beef in their freezer and request another order when their supply is getting low.” The most-recent across-breed comparison conducted by the Beef Improvement Federation shows that Red Angus ranks second for marbling compared to 18 beef breeds, an obvious draw to consumers wanting the best beef product possible. Producers across the nation continue to value Red Angus for their carcass traits. A recent bull sale analysis conducted by the Red Angus Association of America marketing team revealed that carcass traits were a high priority among selection criteria used to select bulls in the spring of 2019. In her October eNewsletter report, RAAA’s Commercial Marketing Coordinator Katie Ochsner wrote, “Red Angus cattle are known for their ability to marble well and produce exceptional beef. Pullthrough demand for Red Angus cattle continues to grow as packers look to fill quality-based product lines. The great taste of Red Angus beef creates a loyal, repeat customer base for producers marketing ranch-raised beef.” That has certainly been the case for Lucky 13 Beef. “All of our beef is dryaged which makes a big difference in the quality of the final product. We strive for consistency in our beef, which is why we only run quality Red Angus cows,” concluded Hull. Hull and Stickel can be found on Facebook as Lucky 13 Beef or Flatland Acres Meats. ■

Top Programs Elevate Worth of Colorado Calf Crop by Teres Lambert for American Red Angus Magazine

42 American Red Angus Magazine â– November 2019

When Joe and Kay Lindsay of Deer Trail, Colorado, market their Red Angus calves, their catalog listing for the video auction promotes their calves as having met the criteria for as many as seven different valueadded programs. This year’s calves qualified for VAC 34+, Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program, Non-Hormone Treated Cattle, Certified Natural Plus, Verified Natural Beef, Superior Progressive Genetics and Top Dollar Angus.

“When we entered ranching and the commercial cow-calf business 12 years ago, cattlemen whom we viewed as mentors suggested that we make our calves as marketable as possible, and we took their advice to heart,” Joe stated. “And we’ve done it one step at a time. This advice was definitely worth following, as we are extremely happy with how our calves are being received by buyers.” The first programs the Lindsays jumped into were VAC 34+ and Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program. Kay credits her uncle, a retired veterinarian, for getting their herd on a solid health track from the very beginning. “He taught us a lot about the value of implementing and maintaining a stringent vaccination program,” Kay said. “It was easy to qualify for VAC 34+ because many of those things we were already doing.” Top Return on Investment When the couple learned about the Red Angus Association of America’s Feeder Calf Certification Program, Joe said it appealed to them straight off. They were impressed that a simple, inexpensive FCCP yellow ear tag would tell potential buyers that the calves were guaranteed as Red Angus genetics. “They are a great return on investment,” said Joe. “We believe Red Angus has a lot to offer the beef industry, and the way calves with FCCP ear tags sell, tells us that feeders agree. We spend less than $1 per calf for the tag, and I can tell you that we get that dollar back many times over when our calves sell.” Wanting even more marketing avenues available for their calves, Joe and Kay expanded their program to qualify for NHTC, Certified Natural Plus and Verified Natural Beef. Kay said qualifying for these three programs wasn’t difficult. After all, the couple knows the age and source of their calves and they practice natural procedures. They never give their calves ionophores, hormones or steroids, beta adrenoceptors or any type of animal by-product. As a general rule, Lindsay calves typically are not given any type of antibiotic. But that rule is broken every now and then.

The FCCP tag was the first value-added program in which Joe and Kay Lindsay enrolled, and they appreciate the high return on investment for age, source and genetic verification.

“When a calf is sick, we believe in giving it an antibiotic,” said Kay. “If an occasional sick animal requires treatment, we simply remove that animal from the program. To make sure it doesn’t slip through the cracks and gets sold as ‘natural,’ we keep a record that an antibiotic was administered to it and we notch its ear tag. That notch is easy to see so that calf doesn’t go into the group marketed as NHTC, Certified Natural Plus and Verified Natural Beef.”

American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2019 43

Top Programs Elevate Worth of Colorado Calf Crop Top Genetics, Top Dollar Two years ago, the Lindsays began participating in the Top Dollar Angus program. This program, Joe said, helps buyers know that their calves come from a program that has invested in top-end Red Angus genetics, particularly in the area of growth and carcass traits. “The bulls we’ve been purchasing have been in the top 25% of the breed for growth and carcass traits, so why not participate in the program?” When Joe and Kay started as commercial cow-calf producers, they adopted two neighbors as their mentors: John Price and John Hanks. Both men not only raise Red Angus but are “on the driving edge of the cattle industry.” They also have what Joe and Kay call “top-notch operations.” It was during an in-depth conversation with Hanks that Joe said he learned about the importance of buying not just any bull. “John Hanks told me to never skimp on a bull. He said bulls would be our best money spent.”

Joe and Kay Lindsay make decisions as a team, always looking for ways to improve their cowherd and increase the value of their calves.

EPDs that get their first attention include birth weight, rib eye area, yield grade, carcass weight, fat and stayability. They also closely check out a bull’s GridMaster Index and his temperament.

Today, Joe and Kay have 12 purebred Red Angus bulls that service the 140 commercial Red Angus cows that they own and the 100 Red Angus-cross cows that the couple manage for Kay’s parents.

The Lindsays pointed out that they are totally amazed at how targeting EPDs has changed their herd. One key advantage, Kay said, is the ability to sell their calves 30 days sooner. That’s 30 days less that the calves are on the cows and using the pastures.

The couple zeroes in on reputation and referral when deciding where to purchase their bulls. Again, they talk to their mentors, listen to what other influencers say and look over the offspring of bloodlines that they hear good things about.

“We used to sell our calves the end of October,” she said. “Now we sell for delivery the end of September and our weights are similar. Our steer calves typically average 650 pounds, with heifers averaging 575 pounds. We’re happy with that.”

“But both of us like to go to a bull sale,” Kay said. “We typically have several bulls selected from a sale catalog based on their EPDs, but we like to visually inspect each of our choices for conformation, feet and legs. We also like to see if the bull fits the phenotype we want. With individual pastures being a section and needing 30 to 36 acres per animal unit, a bull has to have good feet and legs and move out.”

Top Practices Increase Value Bulls go out with the heifers and cows the end of April and are pulled early to mid-August. Heifers and cows start calving as one group the first of February. They like to calve in winter rather than spring. In their environment, spring can have temperature swings and more rainy days which can be hard on calves. Winter, on the other hand, typically means more consistent temperatures. Earlier born calves also mean the Lindsay calves are nice and big when it’s time to sell them.

Early fall is Joe and Kay's favorite time of year because the cows look good and their calves are at their peak.

44 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2019

Calving in winter, the Lindsays move heifers and cows indoors one at a time as their calving time approaches. Every now and then a calf might be born outside, but that isn’t the norm. To ensure animals are brought in before they calve, Joe checks the pregnant group every two to three hours.

Top Programs Elevate Worth of Colorado Calf Crop A day or two after being born, male calves are banded. “My uncle urged us to band so the castration process is less stressful for the calves,” Kay said. “We’re all about less stress for our animals.” To that end, the Lindsays use a chute for branding, administration of vaccinations and other health practices. “A chute allows us to be more hands-on,” Joe said. “I think we do a more thorough job with each animal rather than roping and dragging. Sure, running each animal through a chute takes more time but I believe it’s worth the effort.” Top Genetics Create Top Cows Joe added that he and Kay do almost all of the ranch work themselves. They do, however, have additional help with branding, shipping and pregnancy checking.

Start today with cow status in the palm of your hand.

Detect estrus to improve conception rates in A.I. cows and heifers Monitor health and eating to catch early onset of sickness or stress

“And we rely on professionals when we AI,” he said. Two years ago, the Lindsays AIed their 50 replacement heifers. They liked the offspring of those heifers and plan to AI the entire herd in 2020. “We want to take our herd to the next level, and AI will help us achieve that goal,” Kay said. “AI allows us to use highpowered bulls that we couldn’t afford to buy.” Last year they started pregnancy checking via ultrasound technology and found it faster, more accurate and easier on the cows. “We’ll keep that practice in place,” said Kay. When a female turns up open, she’s culled. Other reasons they might put a female on the truck include a broken mouth, bad udder or producing a calf that doesn’t meet their expectations. “It comes down to the little things,” Joe said. “Plus, we have quite a number of nice heifer calves that can take the place of cows that don’t meet our requirements.”

Following advice from their mentor, Lindsays are diligent in their sire selection and never skimp on a bull, considering it an investment into their operation.

The number of replacement heifers kept each year depends on the number of cows culled, pasture conditions due to Mother Nature being in control, and available land to lease. In the past, they’ve kept 30 to 50 head replacement heifers and insist that every heifer they retain is worthy of her place in the herd. “Our first criterion is based on the heifer’s mother,” said Kay. “We also like thick, broad heifers that have a feminine head and a docile temperament. And we want an even group of replacement heifers – no extremes on either end.” Joe and Kay keep a constant eye on potential replacement heifers every time they make a pasture tour. Come fall when it’s time to gather the herd, they both pretty well know which heifers are keepers. Joe defers to Kay on heifer selection. “She has a good eye and I trust her judgement.” With a delivery deadline to meet due to marketing their calves via an online auction, the Lindsays gather their cows and calves the end of September. Cows and calves are separated, replacement heifers are pulled, and the steers and remaining heifers are loaded directly on the truck. “Then the yearly cycle begins again,” Joe said. “I spent a lot of my life working as an electrician, and we were blessed when we could take up ranching full time 12 years ago near where Kay’s granddad ranched. Raising cattle and ranching has always been my passion, and now we’re doing what we both love. I think we have our herd to the point that we are delivering good, growthy, efficient cattle that will grade well – and Red Angus is the breed that is giving us that confidence.” Joe concluded, “I am so thankful that I listened to Kay when she told me that Red Angus was the way to go.” ■ 48 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2019

Red Angus Convention Unites and Informs Producers by Hannah Frobose, RAAA Media Intern, and Tracey Koester, ARA Editorial Coordinator

The 66th annual National Red Angus Convention attracted Red Angus breeders, commercial cattlemen and industry supporters in Dubuque, Iowa, Sept. 11-13, 2019. The trade show, innovative program and association updates kept convention attendees informed of current industry topics, while allowing ample time for networking and socializing. The Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium kicked off the three-day event and allowed members to hear from industry professionals about opportunities to increase profit in their herds. Troy Marshall of Marshall Cattle Co., asked the audience five questions relating to the Red Angus industry: where are we, what lies ahead, where do we want to go, do we have the right crew and are we on the right course? Covering recent trends, he reflected on where the industry has been and discussed where it is going, emphasizing the economic factors that are driving current and future needs. “The exciting thing to me is that we have the tools to address every one of these needs,” said Marshall. “The value of genetics is going to become even more important in the future and we’re going to have genetics that will not only change the production side of things, but also the efficiency, marketing and even address consumer preferences.” Dr. Ken Odde, Kansas State University, Dr. Tony Bryant, head nutritionist for Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, and Bob Scherer, director of procurement for Tyson Foods, addressed the assembly on adding profitability to their cattle businesses. The symposium concluded with a live ultrasound demonstration from The CUP Lab LLC. Mark Henry, CUP Lab president, scanned live cattle while stressing the value of ultrasounding both bulls and heifers. 52 American Red Angus Magazine ■ November 2019

2019 RAAA National Convention “If you’re not scanning heifers in your operation, you really should be,” said Henry. “It can provide valuable data that will greatly influence future breeding decisions.” The evening entertainment was a dinner cruise on the Celebration Belle boat on the Mississippi River. The official business of the Red Angus Association of America was called to order on Thursday featuring the President’s Message and State of the Association. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, addressed the convention via live feed due to weather-related travel delays. Committee reports, caucus discussions and marketing workshops brought members up to date on Red Angus and industry topics over the course of Thursday and Friday. The Red Angus Foundation Inc. Pick-ofthe-Herd and fundraising auction raised money for research and development and junior support while engaging members in good-natured, competitive bidding. The convention wrapped up with voting in new directors and the annual awards banquet. The 2020 convention will be in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Sept. 23-25, and will showcase the rich patriotic history of the area.

However, Tim Ishee, Jones College graduate and instructor for more than 32 years, is quick to point out that the crown jewel of Jones College is none other than its agriculture program. More specifically, Ishee believes the beef production program, which is developing a herd of highquality Red Angus cows, rises to the top of educational experiences among many colleges and universities.

1506 29th Ave S Moorhead, MN 56560

When the idea for the beef production program first arose, Ishee said the choice of Red Angus was a nobrainer for him.

Ishee attests that the beef production program is a valuable asset in recruitment for the college, as students from several surrounding states enroll in Jones College every year to pursue an agriculture science degree. While the program is clearly valuable to the college, it’s also tremendously beneficial to the students who are able to get handson experience in areas such as ultrasound technology, herd management and health protocols.

“The president of the college wanted to start a beef herd with black Angus in 2011. I convinced him to let us move forward with Red Angus because they are commercially viable, docile and great in a teaching environment with students who have little to no farm experience.” Since starting the program, the herd has grown to include 25 registered Red Angus cows as well as another 25 commercial cows to be used as recipients. Many students who enroll in the beef production program often graduate from Jones and attend surrounding universities such

as Mississippi State or Auburn, taking the skills they’ve learned – AI and ultrasound, for example – with them for application in their future careers. As for the future goals of the program, Ishee would like to see the students raise and show a pen of three bulls at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, in 2021. Additionally, Ishee would like to eventually sell Red Angus cattle from the farm so that it’s a self-sustained venture. “Once the program is permanently established, the profits can be invested in student enrichment, such as the trip to the National Western. The NWSS is a real eye-opener for a lot of these students who don’t have much beef industry background.”

Ishee has definitely discovered a valuable way to teach beef production while exposing students to real world experiences. Graduates of the Jones College agriculture science program are working in the beef industry from coast to coast. Some past students, such as Jason Mills, a Jones graduate and Gulf War veteran, have returned to help Ishee

manage the farm in Ellisville. Mills oversees the day-to-day care and development of the farm and cattle. Two things are for certain: 1) Tim Ishee has high expectations for the beef production program and 2) he and his students won’t give up until they’ve met those goals. ■
