Don’t Mess up My Cows! How many times have you heard cattlemen say, “Don’t mess up my cows!” when they are talking about genetics? Anyone, commercial or seedstock who makes their living with their cows, is always looking for ways to make them work better. When the Red Angus Association of America was formed in 1954, and the founding members required a birth date, weaning date and weaning weight, it was revolutionary. In 1995, when Total Herd Reporting was implemented and reporting reproductive status of every cow every year was mandated, it was far outside of conventional purebred norms. Gather a group of Red Angus breeders, the conversation soon turns to cattle. It might be buzz about an outlier sire or it might be discussion about the acceptance of the data processing system. With IGS, a group of 16 breeds shares data and the compilation of EPDs for a multi-breed analysis. Are these EPDs a good genetic description of the animal’s progeny potential? One thing that has become very clear is that even with the use of genomics, reporting actual phenotypes is paramount to making the predictions accurate. Sixty-six years after the conception of the Red Angus breed, we are entering the year 2020. What can the RAAA offer cattlemen to help them make their cows better? What is better? Is it a list of predetermined genetic parameters designed by a breed association of what a ‘good’ cow, steer or bull should look like? Or, is the role of the Association to accurately describe Red Angus genetics so the seedstock providers can

assist their customers to invest in the genetic package they need to meet their breeding goals? Are there opportunities available to add value to calf crops that work for each unique environment, facility, recordkeeping capabilities, marketing options and herd objectives? The RAAA is just beginning the process of a new five-year strategic plan. Typically, strategic plans are futuristic, aggressive and fluid. The new plan will be a roadmap of targets and goals for the Association. The first strategic plan was completed in 1995. The FCCP tagging program was the product of that forward-thinking plan. How many of you are directly impacted by that single program? THR was implemented as a result of that plan too. Looking at breed growth, that first strategic plan had an incredible impact on the success, growth and acceptance of the Red Angus breed. By supporting the cattleman, both commercial and seedstock breeders of Red Angus genetics have benefited from that first plan. Now 25 years later, we need to emulate that earlier bold leadership and propel Red Angus into the future as the choice for ‘Angus.’ So how do we do that while protecting the integrity of the genetics and assure Red Angus users that we are not messing up their cows?

Board Commentary your calf crop for some of them would certainly not mess up your cowherd.
For starters, we must embrace the science and the objective evaluation tools we have at our disposal. Looking at what our forefathers did that was successful, how can we duplicate that forward-thinking strategy in the present day? Let’s dream big! What if the RAAA made complete reporting of every trait on every registered animal a priority? What if those phenotypes were supported by genomics? In other words, what if every registered Red Angus animal was backed by the very best data scientifically available? I am pretty sure that would NOT mess up your cows. What if you had a roadmap for programs that could add value to your calves when you market them? There are now many pro-
grams available with an array of requirements for qualification. The RAAA implemented the FCCP program – a genetic, age and source program – in 1999. Would it be useful to have a one-stop-shop available through the RAAA that would help you get your calves qualified for some of the many value-added programs available? Understanding and qualifying
And lastly, if we dream really big, what if every breed was on the same base with the same set of EPDs? What if every breed had mandatory data reporting? Can you imagine the genetic improvement and change for the beef industry? Would that mess up your cowherd? I don’t think so! As you begin the fun and sometimes very difficult task of selecting and investing in genetics for your upcoming breeding season, know that the Red Angus founders and former innovators made decisions with your cowherd in mind. Today the current leadership of the RAAA has the opportunity yet again to not mess up your cows!■

Sell Poor-Producing Cows and Buy the Best Bulls Ever Commercial cow-calf producers have been challenged by the recent market situation, and the new year could remain on the difficult side. There are, however, pro-active steps that can be taken to improve bottom-line results and position your business for better years ahead. One such strategy is to cull deeper into the bottom end of the cowherd, then divert some of the extra cull-cow revenue toward purchasing the best bulls you can find in 2020.
Why might this strategy make sense? To start with, bottom-end cows don’t make money when margins are narrow. They are, instead, big losers. If average cows in a given commercial herd are operating near breakeven in today’s market, lower end cows are assuredly losing money. This principle is illustrated using a simplified cow-calf budget presented in the table. Poor Cows, as they are labeled here, do worse than average reproductively and they wean lighter calves. This bottom-tier group might typically represent 10% to 20% of the cowherd but are responsible for a disproportionately large part of the financial strain encountered when margins are narrow. Note in this hypothetical but realistic example that the return on Poor Cows versus Average Cows differs

by $145 per female. The Average Cows are near breakeven, while Poor Cows lose money in buckets. Keeping bottom-end cows around can actually make tough times worse. Culling these females more aggressively than normal should therefore improve near-term operating results, while unlocking additional cash that can be used, at least in part, to build for the future. We know the cattle market will turn around for the better in time, so producers should begin now to position their herds for maximum benefit when the good times arrive. One positive way to prepare for the future is to buy better bulls. Though it seems counterintuitive, now is an excellent time to add $1,000 or even more per bull to your bull-replacement budget.

Association Commentary Using additional cull-cow revenue to buy better bulls equates to rolling those funds to a more productive use, which is a good investment strategy. Data on Red Angus bull prices – which RAAA has collected from hundreds of sales since 2016 – reveals that bulls selling at aboveaverage prices have superior EPD profiles and are more phenotypically desirable as well. Such bulls provide both short- and long-term benefits. Every calf crop they sire can yield heavier, more marketable calves, while the replacementquality heifers they produce will enhance the cowherd for many years to come. Reaching into the top half of the bull market has been shown to pay more than it costs, which is the reason high-profit ranchers consistently spend more
Red Angus bulls are right for their operation and how much to spend in procuring their next-generation herd sires. Lower-end bulls may be all a certain producer feels he or she can afford. But might they be better off to cull deeper into their cow population, run fewer but better cows during the next several years, while simultaneously ratcheting up the quality on their next round of bull purchases?

Each producer must analyze his or her own situation and make the best decision they can for their commercial or seedstock herd. However, we can say with certainly that poor cows are a poor asset to own during difficult markets, while superior bulls make a positive financial contribution in good times – and those not so good. ■

Marketing Update by Harold Bertz, Director of Commercial Marketing
Herd Improvement in Progress January begins the season of mailboxes overflowing with bull sale catalogs and agriculture publications thick with advertisements. This is an exciting time of the year to be sure, but also one critical to the long-term success of commercial breeding programs. Many agriculture purchases claim to be the “best investment on the farm,” but bull purchases truly live up to that claim. In a closed cowherd, the genes entering it will come entirely from the bulls purchased. In three generations of retained heifers, 87.5% of the genetic make-up of the females returned to the herd are the result of the last three bulls purchased. Knowing that, can a bull ever be too good? Red Angus has long been the choice for producing the highest quality replacement females. This is evidenced by the data compiled at Kansas State University in cooperation with Superior Livestock and Merck Animal Health. The data states Red Angus-sired heifer calves garner $7-$11/cwt more than other breed sired types. Red Angus-sired bred heifers bring over $100/head and cows $200/ head more than any other breedsired type. The industry overwhelmingly recognizes the value of Red Angus females with value increasing at every stage of her life. This value is no accident. Red Angus breeders have always been the leaders in economically relevant traits that keep ranchers profitable. The extra value shown in Red Angus-influenced females is a strong indicator of the industry’s acceptance of this fact. That is not to say Red Angus breeders have ignored growth and carcass traits.
Katie Ochsner, commercial marketing coordinator, she made the following observations. Over the three-year period for which data was collected, buyers consistently placed value on GridMaster index, HerdBuilder index and yearling weight EPD. It is logical that there were high correlations between sale price and the economic selection indices reported by RAAA, as indices are powerful selection tools that utilize economically relevant traits to predict profitability in various production scenarios. Between the two economic selection indices, the most emphasis was placed on GridMaster index. Among the EPD correlations, growth traits had higher correlations with sale price than other reported EPD. It can also be noted that ultrasound back fat and ultrasound ribeye area had strong correlations with sale price for both years that this data was recorded. Based on this, it can be inferred that customers paid a higher price for bulls that were phenotypically more fleshy and heavier muscled.
The marketing team has been collecting data from the bull sales they have attended since 2016. One of the goals was to provide insight into what traits are most valued by Red Angus bull buyers. Correlations between sale price and selection criteria such as EPDs, economic indices and ultrasound measures are evaluated to gauge which traits are most emphasized by bull buyers. The chart indicates where selection pressure has been placed the past three years.
Bull selection is a complicated, time-consuming process that significantly impacts a herd’s profitability and sustainability. As with any important task, significant thought and research should be employed. Red Angus breeders provide a wide variety of genetics to the commercial cowherd, enabling producers to place their emphasis so progress can be made. The data shown indicates that selection indices and EPDs provide a solid base on which producers can make informed, economically relevant decisions that keep their herd improvement in progress.
The correlations in these traits are relatively low, indicating that most producers are taking a balanced approach for all traits, but we can determine some trends. In a recent eNews article by
The marketing team wishes each of you the most successful 2020 and looks forward to seeing you down the road at bull sales and events throughout the year. ■

There Is A Difference… You will find that there is truly a difference in the type of bulls we use in our program. We breed cattle based on how they perform in the real world and are maternally focused and profit drive. We pay close attention to each cow family and how they perform against one another. We structure our breeding program off balance, use multiple-trait selection, and understand the importance of having the right type of cow that thrives in a forage-based environment. 87762 446th Ave. Bassett, NE 68714 Call or Email:

We have found that the “belly dragging kind” is the “right kind” to have. We have also found that the “right kind” comes with calving ease, fertility, structural soundness, udder quality and longevity. Finding and selecting these types of genetics is the key to profitable ranching. The group of bulls we have selected to sell this year have generations of proven cow families behind them. With using bulls like these, you can put confidence in knowing what to expect.

Member Services Bulletin by Halla Pfeiff, Director of Office Operations International Animal Identification Letter for 2020 is ‘H’ Many find this beneficial for tag and identification numbers, i.e. animal id. How and even if the letter is used depends upon the ranch’s preferred style. One suggestion would be to place it in front of the ID number to identify bull calf, ex: H101, or if it’s a heifer calf to place the letter behind the number ex: 101H. To view a list of other year letters, go to REDSPro under the ‘Announcements’ tab. Important! Spring Herd Inventory Requested January 1 Total Herd Reporting has been the foundation of the RAAA for over 20 years, and still stands true to the original ideas while allowing for an ever-changing industry. The objective of THR is to accumulate reproductive and performance data on all animals in the herd without controlling which animals will be registered. The purpose is to report either a calving record through weaning or a reason code as to why the female did not produce a calf. With the requirement to report on all animals versus a select few, this eliminates bias towards elite animals and actually allows for elite animals to excel and inferior animals to be evaluated closer. The design is to work for all stakeholders, not against. The information from THR is used to monitor overall reproductive performance, identify genetic, environmental and management areas in which to concentrate improvement efforts, assist in selection and culling decisions, and generate data for producing genetic predictions for reproductive traits. All members are required to participate in THR and report information as listed on the calendar of events. • Report breeding herd inventory • Assessments are based off herd inventory (females only) at the time of the deadline (March 1)
• Report production and performance data • Report heifer exposure data/inventory (Not required, but highly recommended) All information should be reported through their respective paper worksheet or online submission form. Members are encouraged to submit data electronically through REDSPro. All herds are designated as spring- or fall-calving herds, which then determines when the above information is due to the National Office. Spring calving season is Jan. 1 to June 30 and fall calving season is July 1 to Dec. 31. The herd inventory should include all females the breeder will be collecting production data on for the next 12 months. Assessments The assessments associated with THR are on a per-cow base versus per calf. The annual fee includes the reporting of each calf – whether registered or not – and transfer at no additional charge provided the transfer application is received within 60 days of the date of sale. This encourages members to register and transfer all animals necessary. Be aware time periods are allotted to do so, otherwise non-compliance will be subject to an additional fee. The assessments of THR may be paid in full at the time of billing or completed in four monthly installments or less to help stakeholders manage cash flow of their operation. Advantages The requirement of THR has made for increasing confidence of the breed’s EPDs. All EPDs benefit from collective data being reported. The HerdBuilder index make Red Angus exceptional in completely describing cowherd traits. While, the GridMaster index allows for focus on carcass traits. With a fluctuating industry, EPDs are what make new marketing ideas possible, such as Genomic Merit DNA tests. It is also important to report

as much data as possible, including calving ease, udder scores, body condition scores, cow weights, ultrasound and carcass data. As producers in a growing world, we are continuously asking more of our cattle. The best way to improve our production is to measure further and evaluate closer. Therefore, THR gives Red Angus stakeholders the opportunity to exceed above the rest. To help our members accomplish these requirements, the National Office mailed a THR calendar to each member. To meet Step 1 of THR after Jan. 1, it will be time to update your spring herd inventory for 2020. The herd inventory is available online via REDSPro. Also, it is time to report 2019 calving data through weaning. Do you have your DNA submitted for your spring sale? Remember it takes 15-20 business days for DNA completion at the lab. Submit your DNA early in order to have results back in time for your sale. We are not able to speed up the chemical process by rushing the sample. Be aware that it is busy season for submissions and due to volume, it can slow down the process by a couple of days. n
May your New Year be filled with peace, love, joy and good Red Angus cattle! Wishing you and your family a prosperous New Year. We hope that 2019 was fruitful, but we hope that your plans for 2020 excel your expectations.

Do You Respect Your Heifers? by Mark Henry, CUP Lab, LLC
As a seedstock producer, bulls are your product. So, it is completely understandable that you want to do everything you can to prove their worth to prospective buyers. You purchase semen of the sires you think will improve the genetics not only in your herd, but in your customers’ herds. The necessary weights, measurements, ultrasound and genomics are all submitted in order to sell animals that are as well described genetically as possible. Your ranch is doing all it can to survive and thrive. A job well done. Do you treat your heifers with the same care? Sure, you submit weights and the measurements, but do you give them the respect they truly deserve by scanning and submitting DNA? Scans submitted to CUP Lab average roughly 60% bulls and 40% heifers. Not too bad for the heifers, right? But when you really start analyzing what value heifer scanning brings to the table, it should be reversed with 40/60 in favor of female scan data. Here’s why: 1. Heifers almost always express greater variation in %IMF in
CUP Lab data which allows for more selection pressure on marbling. 2. Your heifers will make up the pool to sort replacements and your future cowherd. Scan data allows you to find the good, but more importantly, the bad, for ribeye area and marbling. 3. Scanning heifers is an investment you can keep, whereas bull scan data is mostly for your customers. 4. Scanning both bulls and heifers increases carcass trait EPD accuracy on your entire cowherd, not just the half producing bulls. 5. Heifers form an additional contemporary group providing extremely valuable data to prove sires and dams. 6. Scanning, like any other phenotypic measurement, improves accuracy for the animal as well as sire, dam and close relatives. 7. Scanning both bulls and heifers includes them in genetic discovery. Thus, increasing the value of the genomic tests for your herd. 8. Scanning heifers gives you the ability to make important mating and selection decisions with phenotypic data from both genders. 9. You can rest easy knowing your herd and your customers are getting the most-accurate carcass EPDs possible with scan data from the CUP Lab. Showing your heifers some respect by carcass ultrasound scan-ning will create a ripple effect, impacting your herd for years. n

EPD Information for Bull-Buying Decisions by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement
When looking at EPD information there are three important metrics to consider. This includes the EPD value, the accuracy of the EPD and the percentile rank for that EPD value. Each of these different pieces of information is important to consider when making bullbuying decisions. To keep this example simple, we will use a single EPD value and two sires. The concepts can be used on any EPD comparison among different animals. The first piece of information is the EPD value for the animal. The point of the EPD value is to be able to compare expected progeny performance differences. In this example, the WW EPD values of the two sires are 57 and 64 for Bull A and B, respectively. So based on the EPD value, we would expect the calves sired by Bull B to weigh, on average, 7 pounds more, if they were mated to genetically similar dams. The important thing to take away from this statement is that we would expect that amount to be the average weight difference. It does not guarantee that every calf by Bull B would weigh more than a calf sired by Bull A, but over a sizeable sample we would expect a 7-pound difference in progeny performance for weaning weight. The next piece of information that can be considered is the accuracy value associated with the EPD. The accuracy of an EPD is a metric that can be used to determine how much information is contributing to the EPD calculation. There are multiple ways that EPD accuracy can be increased. The first is through collection of phenotype information on that individual animal. An animal with a record for a trait will have a higher EPD accuracy value than an animal that does not have information recorded.
prediction, therefore the reliability of the prediction becomes higher.

A second way to increase accuracy of an EPD is through the inclusion of genomic information. Genomic information allows for a more in-depth look at the genetic make-up of an animal. Specifically, the loci are linked to different genes across the genome that cause differences in performance. Therefore, having this information allows for a better idea of future progeny performance. An added benefit is that genomics can also be used to confirm the pedigree information for that individual animal. When we compare these two sires, we can see that there is a difference in accuracy values. Bull A has an EPD accuracy value that is twice as high as that of Bull B. One way that this can be evaluated is by looking at the EPD possible change. Possible change is a measurement that relates to the range of the expected true EPD value that it would be two-thirds of the time. If we take into account the accuracy values of each of the bulls’ EPDs, we would expect the range of values for Bull A to be between 47 and 67, and Bull B’s range would be 51 to 77. Possible change range of the EPD narrows as the EPD accuracy increases. Intuitively, this concept makes sense. If there is more information to make the
34 American Red Angus Magazine n January 2020
The final piece of information that is associated with EPDs is the percentile ranking. The percentile ranking is a metric that helps determine where an individual animal’s EPD value ranks within a group of similar animals. Percentile calculations are performed on three main groups within the Red Angus database. These groups include non-parent animals, active sires, and active dams. For percentile ranks, a value of 1 is more desirable than a value of 99. For some traits, the more desirable value is higher, and for others, it is lower. The percentile ranks take this into account to rank individual EPD values. While the percentile ranks are helpful for determining where an animal’s EPD value ranks within their respective group, it is not correct to compare percentiles from animals that are members of different groups. An example of this would be comparing an older AI sire to a nonparent animal. To make that comparison the EPD value must be used. All of these values can be found on the RAAA website when searching for an animal. When looking to make decisions about which bull to purchase, it is recommended that each piece of information is considered. Taking these three different pieces of information into consideration will allow for more informed decisions. Better decisions will allow for a more rapid pace of genetic progress and achieving your herd’s individual goals. n

Nutrition and Management Crucial to Fertility of Herd Bulls by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
As temperatures drop and cold winds pick up, ensuring cows are in a safe location and calving shelters are bedded is paramount. In these conditions it can be easy to forget about herd bulls. Yet, this is a pivotal time to keep them top of mind for the sake of the herd’s future. Regarding winter conditions, Brian G. Fieser, Ph.D., beef cattle and reproductive nutritionist with ADM Animal Nutrition, said, “The impact on bull fertility needs to be considered from both a nutritional and management perspective. Application of one without the other will not provide the results we’re looking to achieve.”
to go wrong resulting in devastation, not to mention the care of the sperm once it’s developed. Additionally, walking on slick surfaces like snow and ice can compromise a bull’s conformation, resulting in injuries to feet and legs. There’s also the potential for decreased body condition score as their bodies burn excess calories to keep warm.
He explained, “We need to make sure, nutritionally, that the bulls are getting the proper balance of nutrients to be healthy and growing. We also need to make sure our management practices are in line to support good fertility.”
Fortunately, there are a variety of measures good managers can implement in order to keep their bulls sound and ready for breeding season once the cold breaks.
Spermatogenesis, the production and development of sperm, takes 61 days. That’s two months’ time for something
Scrotal Whether bulls are kept in a nearby corral or sent out to winter pasture, it’s important to guarantee that they have dry

ground and shelter from the wind. Although marked for increased fertility due to maximum sperm production, bulls with larger scrotums are inhibited in their ability to retract their testicles close to their warm bodies leaving them more susceptible to damage. Even when bulls use their natural instincts to care for themselves, winter conditions can cause them to fall short of success. “Management considerations of proper bedding to keep the bulls dry and minimize the cold stress will have huge benefits come time for breeding soundness exams for both developing bulls and established herd bulls – specifically with scrotal contact with frozen ground, and wind breaks to minimize the direct effects of cold stress,” said Fieser.

Nutrition and Management Crucial to Fertility of Herd Bulls Scabs on the scrotum are a good indication of frostbite. Impaired blood flow to the testicles due to freezing can cause damage, although, depending on the stage of spermatogenesis in which the frostbite took place, bulls can eventually recover from scrotal frostbite. Commercial Red Angus producers Tim and Tori Dwyer believe that keeping bulls out of the wind is one of their greatest winter challenges. The Dwyers ranch near Sidney, Montana, where the cold season is known for its wind and low temperature and usually lasts an average of four months with temperatures below 30 degrees. Dwyer emphasized the importance of keeping bulls in a pasture with good natural shelter. “We are fortunate that we have land along creeks with several hooks and turns that provide good cover from trees for wind and snow protection.” Body Condition Score It’s important to keep bulls in good shape

no matter what the weather holds. Research suggests that a body condition score of 5 to 7 is ideal for bulls at breeding. Weight loss due to dropping temperatures can negatively impact a bull’s sperm count. Nevertheless, a drastic change in feed sources as a reaction to colder weather can be just as detrimental. “One thing I stress with my clients is that we can push bulls for big weights and gains, or grow them slow and steady, but regardless the nutrients need to be supplied in proper propor-

tions for whatever goal we are aiming to hit,” said Fieser. “When things get out of balance, we see negative impacts. For instance, if we are trying to push bulls to grow fast, we need to make sure we have supplied adequate rumen-available protein, rumen-bypass amino acids, vitamins and minerals that can support rapid gains.” He then emphasized the problem with hot feed. “If we just load up on corn to push bulls and don’t provide the supporting nutrients previously mentioned, we will see disruptions in proper growth and fertility. One of my core philosophies when developing bulls is to keep the diet as high in forage as possible to meet our gain goals. This is to make sure we are developing a digestive system – specifically the rumen – that is designed to work later in life on pasture and low-quality forages. So, as a rule I try to stay away from getting too carried away with high-concentrate diets.

Balanced nutrition is essential for the proper development of herd bulls.
Depending on the amount of gains we are looking to achieve, most of my bull development diets will be 14-15% CP and net energy for gain (NEg) in the mid-40s to 50s (44-56 mcal/cwt), with a proper balance of rumen-bypass amino acids as well as supporting minerals and vitamins. You cannot have too much single trait (nutrient) selection, because having the protein and energy right without proper vitamin and mineral nutrition could result in less-than-desirable fertility in bulls that outwardly look like we want.” For the Dwyers, free-choice salt and mineral and free-choice grass-alfalfa hay allows their herd bulls to maintain a consistent, high-quality nutrient source. According to Dwyer, “They eat as much as they want. And they eat a lot when it’s cold.” Some producers may associate winter with runny noses and viral infections in their bulls. While vaccines and medication are essential tools, Fieser advocates for producers to take a nutritionally proactive approach on herd health. “Vaccines and medications are technologies to help combat disease. However, the immune system is tasked with the majority of work, serving in both a proactive and reactive role, requiring significant nutritional support. This starts with a high-quality, highly fortified vitamin and mineral profile in the diet.” He continued, “With a highly functioning immune system, the hope is that we can mitigate the need for aggressive drug intervention for acute sickness. Additionally, the immune and health boosting products on the market have improved markedly over the years. We now have products like nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA), essential oils that can enhance productivity and immune health, and yeasts that can directly enhance and supplement the immune system. With the proper application of these nutritional aids, our goal is to again minimize acute intervention with drugs to treat sickness.” Breeding Soundness Exam When Old Man Winter finally waves goodbye, it is important to evaluate the impact the cold weather had. “To us, the breeding soundness exam is the most important management protocol we utilize,” said Dwyer. “It can eliminate potential consternation with a breeder if bulls don't test satisfactorily as the tests are performed by a professional.

Nutrition and Management Crucial to Fertility of Herd Bulls “It can eliminate or reduce potential lack of breed-up which can cost many times more than the cost of any soundness exam and can help identify subtle issues with each bull we may not recognize or realize from just pasture observation.” Bulls should be tested 30 to 60 days prior to turning them out with cows. This allows them to be evaluated close enough to breeding season yet provides the producer time to find replacement bulls if necessary. During the breeding soundness exam, a veterinarian checks four areas:
Start today with cow status in the palm of your hand.
Detect estrus to improve conception rates in A.I. cows and heifers Monitor health and eating to catch early onset of sickness or stress Free up more time in your day

1. Physical: The DVM will determine if the bull’s reproductive organs are functioning correctly. He may also weigh in on the bull’s structure and ability to travel the pasture and cover cows. 2. Scrotal Measurements: Bulls must measure up based on their age in order to be considered sound from a scrotal perspective. The age-to-size minimum requirements are: less than or equal to 15 months – 30 cm, 15-18 months – 31 cm, 18-21 months – 32 cm, 21-24 months – 33cm, greater than 24 months – 34 cm. 3. Sperm Motility: Bulls must have 30% motile sperm in order to pass a BSE. 4. Sperm Morphology: Morphological testing of sperm must determine 70% of a bull’s sperm is shaped normally and is capable of fertilization. Last year the Society for Theriogenology Manual for Breeding Soundness Examination of Bulls, which is available on the SFT website, announced changes to sperm morphology requirements. Essentially, the move was to allow more evidence-based criteria and the former system classifying primary and secondary abnormalities was discontinued. Dwyer shared his strategy for keeping good bulls ready to breed, “We try to keep the bulls in good shape so they're ready to go to work, but as everybody knows, bulls figure out ways to get injured. So, we try to keep a couple more than we think we might need, and sometimes that's not enough. Having good relationships with breeders is helpful, especially when you need them in an emergency situation.” Overall Dwyer summed up his approach. “I don't know if there is any one thing more important than another as it all contributes to the bulls being ready, but cutting corners usually results in paying for it in the long run – and that's no bull.” n
According to Dwyer, it’s a good idea to plan for a few extras since bulls are prone to injury due to fighting.

Change Makes Improvement in Commercial Red Angus Herd by Jennifer Carrico for American Red Angus Magazine
Change is inevitable and change is good. Going from dairy cows to beef cows is a drastic change and one that Iowa producer Adam Glienke is glad he made. Glienke, along with his wife Amy, have a commercial Red Angus herd with his parents Brian and Cindy Glienke. Until 2014, the family milked cows, but due to a decline in profits at the dairy, they decided to quit milking and switch to beef cows. At that time, Glienke purchased a small group of certified Red Angus heifers to start his beef herd. “We had dealt with other breeds when I purchased the Red Angus females. After getting them in produc-
tion it was clear they were the ones we wanted more of because they had a great disposition and mothering ability,” Glienke said. In the past five years, the herd has grown to just short of 200 cows. While he and Amy have their cows and his parents have theirs, all the cattle are run together and treated the same. “It’s a true family operation. We all work together to get everything

done,” Glienke said. “Dad and I couldn’t do all the breeding, calving, ultrasounding and everything else without the help of my wife and mom. Amy loves working with the cows but has been preoccupied with our 2-year-old, Albie, the last couple years. We are also thankful for a few good friends to help make everything run smoothly.” Heifers start calving the last part of January, followed by cows the last part of February.
Change Makes Improvement in Commercial Red Angus Herd At birth, calves are weighed, given a mineral shot, a 7-way blackleg vaccine and a respiratory vaccine, as well as having navels sprayed with iodine. Weights are taken on the calves at birth and weaning to better understand the genetics and performance of the herd. A clean environment at birth is very important for good health until
weaning. Prior to sending cows to grass, calves are all run through the chute again for vaccinations. Bulls are then banded and implanted. “We take pride in the health of our cattle and have had customers say our calves are the healthiest group they’ve ever fed. That starts at birth and continues with how they are handled until sale time,” Glienke said. Red Angus females are Glienke’s cow of choice because of their great disposition and mothering ability.
The health of cows is also important, as they provide a lot of disease immunity through colostrum. Vaccinations are given pre-breeding and at pregnancy checking time. Proper worming also allows cows to perform to their best.

bean and alfalfa in the northwest Iowa counties of Cherokee and Buena Vista. The Glienkes provide calves with creep feed, which is believed to add 90 to 100 pounds by weaning. Having calves started on feed prior to weaning makes for an easier transition.
Health and nutrition go hand in hand. Silage and haylage are made from some of their 1,800 acres of farmland, which includes corn, soy-

Change Makes Improvement in Commercial Red Angus Herd “Calves will go straight on feed at weaning and keep eating since they are familiar with having feed as part of their daily diet, Glienke said. “We usually wean around September 1 to get a full 60 days of preconditioning prior to delivery time. The Glienkes have been selling their steer calves on video sales with Superior Livestock for November 1 delivery. Heifers are retained for replacements in the herd. “We usually keep about 50 to 75 heifers to add to our herd. Since we’ve been growing the size of our herd quickly, we have kept nearly all the heifers as replacements, he said. Cows are all artificially inseminated. Registered Red Angus bulls are purchased from purebred breeders in Iowa and Nebraska. At least two
bulls are kept in each pasture to cover all cows and help ensure more are bred in case something would happen to one. Cows are with bulls for two estrous cycles after AI and heifers are given

Change Makes Improvement in Commercial Red Angus Herd Some crossbreeding has been used in the herd to add hybrid vigor and pounds to the calves, but the majority of the breeding of the herd is Red Angus. The high percentage of Red Angus bloodlines in the herd improves carcass traits which is important as the majority of commercial calves are fed out.
Glienke wants to keep a narrow calving season and bulls are only with the cows for two estrous cycles after AIing. They pregnancy check via ultrasound 90 days post-breeding to determine management groups.
“We need to be sure to continue to provide good beef for consumers,” Glienke said. “Our calf buyer will send us carcass information when they are sent to harvest so we can see how our cattle perform on the rail.” Glienke tags his calves with the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program yellow tag once they are weaned and in the feedlot. Being able to sell calves as certified Red Angus guarantees to the buyer that the genetics of the cattle are at least 50% Red Angus and that they will perform in the feedyard. Identifying their Red Angus genetic make-up is also useful when extra heifers are sold as replacements. “We are always willing to make needed changes to produce they type of cattle sought after by commercial cattlemen and feeders. Japan Puts Final Stamp of Approval on U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement for Beef by Burt Rutherford, Senior Editor, BEEF Magazine This article first appeared on BEEFmagazine.com. Reprinted with permission. The U.S. and Japan recently completed a pact that will put in motion decreased tariffs and increased beef exports to Japan. “This agreement is one of the biggest developments in the history of red meat trade, as no international market delivers greater benefits to U.S. farmers and ranchers, and to the entire U.S. supply chain, than Japan.” That’s Dan Halstrom’s reaction to news that the Upper House of the Japanese Parliament approved the U.S.Japan trade agreement on Dec. 4, which will greatly improve access for U.S. red meat in Japan. Key provisions of the agreement, which was approved by Japan’s Lower House on Nov. 19, were released in October by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Halstrom, U.S. Meat Export Federation President and CEO, said with the U.S.-Japan trade agreement now approved by the Japanese Parliament, the U.S. beef and pork industries look forward to expanded opportunities in Japan, which is already the largest value destination for U.S. pork and beef exports (combined export value in 2018 was $3.7 billion). “In addition to the benefits provided to the U.S. industry, Japanese consumers will now enjoy more affordable access to a wider range of U.S. products.“ NCBA President Jennifer Houston echoed the U.S. beef business’ appreciation. “There’s just no other way to say it: this is a tremendous victory and a great day for America’s beef producers and Japanese consumers.” 70 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2020
“Japan is the No. 1 export market for U.S. beef, and for many years it has been a top priority of NCBA to remove tariff and non-tariff trade barriers that have prevented American beef producers from meeting Japanese consumer demand for safe and high-quality U.S. beef,” she said. “This agreement levels the playing field and opens the door for U.S. beef producers to meet consumer demand in Japan. NCBA has been a strong supporter of President Trump’s push for a bilateral trade deal with Japan, and we look forward to capitalizing on this opportunity in 2020.” With tariff rates mirroring those imposed on major competitors, USMEF’s forecast for 2020 is for U.S. beef and pork exports to Japan to reach $2.3 billion and $1.7 billion, respectively. Export volumes are projected to be roughly 360,000 metric tons for beef and 410,000 metric tons for pork. Volume and value projections are based on reduced tariff rates being in place for the full year. USMEF projects that by 2025, U.S. red meat exports to Japan will approach $5 billion – roughly $2.8 billion for U.S. beef and more than $2 billion for U.S. pork – as consumption of U.S. red meat increases due to greater access for Japanese consumers and the U.S. gaining market share.

Our Program
The Elite Nucleus Herd Located in Lewistown, Montana
Our Team
Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce.
The LSF team includes not only our family but our managers, cooperators and customers. It takes a team to remain competitive in the industry today and we value the input from all of our team members.
Our Key Members:
Our Ranches
The Elite Nucleus herd runs on our "home" ranch located 10 miles south of Lewistown, Montana in the Snowy Mountains. We also have an advanced genetics center located in Iowa where our parents began farming over 50 years ago. In addition to these ranches we have established regional cooperators that have herds populated with nucleus ranch females.
Our Genetics
We have established a breeding philosophy that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. Our herdsires Commander and Night Calver are perfect examples that balance all traits and produce least cost cattle with exceptional phenotypes. Our next generation of herd sires such as President, Statesman, Rancher and Pure Profit continue this tradition and headline the bulls that we will be selling in our events this spring.
Our Bull and Heifer Development
We develop our bulls and females at various development centers throughout the United States. All the bulls are fed a highroughage ration designed to producea 3.0 lb ADG with 0.2 of an inch back fat. The replacement females are fed a carrying ration and we have maintained over an 80% first service AI conception rate on our females. The cattle are developed to adapt to any environment and thrive.
• Ryan Ludvigson – is our main marketing representative and oversees the cowherd and development operations in Montana. • Park Ludvigson – is our main breeding specialist, managing our embryo collection and transfer program as well as our embryo export program. • Steve Newberry - our chief business strategist that oversees LN Cattle Company operations. • Chace Iverson - Our ranch manager that oversees the Elite Nucleus Herd in Lewistown. Well qualified with years of experience in seedstock and commercial cow calf production.
Our Customers
Our customers play an integral and ongoing part in our breeding program. It would be impossible for us to remain competitive without constant input by our customers. Our customer's environments range from the High Desert to the High Plains and from the Midwest to the Rio Grande. Adaptability of our genetics has been the key to why our customers come back year after year.
$Profitability
Again this year, every bull will have a $Profit Index. This index ranks cattle on their ability to return “profit” to the beef industry. We believe that this index will simplify the selection process for our customers and move their operations in the right direction faster in this competitive market. Please contact us to visit about this ground breaking index as well as to receive materials that explain the process in more detail.

Japan Puts Final Stamp of Approval on U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement for Beef The agreement also opens new opportunities for valueadded and processed red meat products, with tariffs on these products phasing to zero, which contributes to the overall growth in U.S. exports to the high-value Japanese market. “Because of the Administration’s commitment to this issue, America’s cattle producers will no longer be at a competitive disadvantage in our largest export market. That means our current market of $2 billion a year – nearly $100 per head sold – is likely to grow in the years to come,” Houston said. “I commend Japan’s quick action to approve these important trade agreements between our two nations, which are the world’s first and third largest economies,” said USTR Robert Lighthizer. “We expect the President to sign the implementing proclamation for the United States next week.” The United States is preparing for the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement and the U.S.-Japan Digital Trade Agreement to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. As agreed by President
72 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2020
Trump and Prime Minister Abe, both governments will begin consultations early next year in order to enter into further negotiations on a broader trade agreement, according to Lighthizer. With the approval by the Diet, Japan’s upper legislative chamber, the bilateral trade deal with the United States will gradually lower the tariff on U.S. beef from 38.5% to 9%. This will keep U.S. beef on a level playing field with imports from Australia, Canada, Mexico and other countries. Japan is the largest export market for U.S. beef, accounting for approximately $2 billion in sales per year, according to USMEF. ■

20/20 Vision for the Future Welcome to a new year and the turn of a decade! The year 2020 signifies a fresh start – whether it’s a New Year’s resolution, the beginning of the fiscal year or the excitement of your anticipated calf crop. Regardless of your goals and aspirations, it’s important to glance behind us to acknowledge our progress. One noteworthy fact is that 2020 marks the 10-year anniversary of the incorporation of the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. While hindsight is 20/20, we can also share a 20/20 vision of the future with planning, dedication and teamwork. That prediction includes creating a new Strategic Plan to roadmap the next five years of the Red Angus Association of America. Research continuing to advance the Red Angus breed’s worth in the marketplace is surely going to be a part of that tactic and this is where RAFI’s role becomes crucial to fund research projects. Contributions to RAFI will form the collective funding to support these studies, ultimately adding value to Red Angus in the marketplace.
As you plan your ranch’s strategy for the new decade, consider how you can contribute to the advancement of the Red Angus breed. Donations can be as simple as a onetime memorial or as deliberate as a pledge over several years. Visionary gifting can include wills or living trusts, securities or even real estate. The bottom line is that each contribution,
regardless of size, increases the effectiveness of RAFI and secures Red Angus’ foothold in the industry. Discuss your 2020 contribution options with your family or ranch partners today and pledge your commitment to a bright year and decade. For more information, contact Janet Russell, RAAA accounting director. janet@redangus.org • 940-387-3502

Three Questions to Ask Your Seedstock Producer by Kayln Waters, Agricultural Agent, University of Florida Extension This article originally appeared in Progressive Cattle.
As winter rolls around, beef producers begin looking forward to bull sale season. While there are loads of data available to review prior to purchasing a new herd sire, there is also something to be said about putting your boots on the ground and spending some time at your seedstock producer’s operation to see how they manage their herds. Here are three questions that should be asked when considering purchasing a bull: 1. Can I see your cowherd? Get out there and look through their cow herd. See their heifers and their mature or running-age cows. Evaluate their herd’s ability to be productive within their environment. As a potential customer, you can evaluate your seedstock producer’s cowherd and learn a tremendous amount about their genetic program. Ultimately, if you are buying their genetics, and retaining replacement heifers out of those bulls, their cowherd should give you a snapshot of your future cowherd. 2. What’s your culling program? It is amazing that whenever you watch an interview of a long-standing, successful cow-calf operation, one of the things they always attribute their success and progression to is a solid and strict culling program. Cull cow income generally accounts for 10-25% of a cowcalf operation’s income. 86 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2020
Hard Working Cows
shouldn’t look like they’re working too hard... Four generations deep in the brand prepare LJC 166 to breed in a timely manner, maintain her body condition and raise a valuable calf on our native range in northeast Colorado. As an 8-yr-old, she’s produced multiple bulls for our annual sale, and like her herd mates - pass on an arsenal of economically relevant traits to the bulls they produce for our customers. Here’s what our cows have produced for our March 2020 bull sale. • Cow Herd Profitability: 20% of the offering ranks in the top 1% for HerdBuilder Index. The entire offering averages in the top 10% for HerdBuilder. • Calf Survival: 65% of the bulls are 15 CED or greater - half of those come with triple-digit growth. • Calf Value: 33% of the bulls rank in the top 10% for GridMaster Index, and the entire offering averages in the best 25%.

Three Questions to Ask Your Seedstock Producer However, what that number doesn’t capture is what the lack of a strict culling program will cost an operation. In addition, culling ensures the integrity of a cowcalf operation. Evaluate the benchmark culling criteria of a seedstock operation: a. What are your requirements for a female to enter your cow herd? i. Age of first calving ii. Genetics iii. Phenotype 1. Feet/leg soundness 2. Udder quality b. What production benchmarks do you cull from? i. Failure to become pregnant (culling open cows) ii. Weaning weight/calf performance iii. Ability to maintain body condition 3. Do your cows work for you, or do you work for your cows? As a potential bull customer, you should want to know what the basis management of their herd looks like. Begin with the understanding that you do not manage a seedstock herd the same way that you manage a commercial herd. With that, ask them about their feed program. What type of body condition are their cows able to maintain on summer forages, or do they have to supplement year-round? Then move onto their breeding data. What are their pregnancy rates like for both cows and heifers? Are they consistently getting good reproductive results? What about their herd health issues (pinkeye, foot rot, respiratory issues at weaning)? In addition, ask them what their calving season looks like. Are they having to pull a lot of calves? Do they have issues with udders at calving or any other time of the year? These are just three questions that should help get the conversation started. While we can get complacent when we go to a sale and just look at the EPDs and walk through the display pens, it's a good idea to do your homework in advance.. This is particularly important if you are buying bulls from the same seedstock producers on an annual basis. Keep in mind, if you are purchasing their genetics and keeping replacement heifers, their cowherd will give you a glimpse into the future of your herd. ■ 88 American Red Angus Magazine ■ January 2020

Member News In Memory Shirley Morton A wonderful woman, mother and friend was called home to her Heavenly Father on Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Shirley Ann Dowling Morton was born in Butte, Montana, on Nov. 28, 1928, to Francis and Frances Dowling. She was raised in a typical hard-working, Christian Butte family. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School through 8th grade, then Butte High School where she was a majorette in the marching band for the Butte Bulldogs. While in high school, Shirley began working for a firm of attorneys as a secretary and continued that work after graduating in 1946. One of the firm’s attorneys, Arnold Olsen, ran for Attorney General, for which he was elected, so Shirley followed him to Helena to work in the Capitol Building as his secretary

After working as Olsen’s secretary for two terms, Shirley and Peg decided to set off on an adventure and move somewhere new and exciting. They narrowed it down to either Denver or San Francisco. They ventured to Denver to see how they liked the climate but there was a heavy snowstorm the few days they were there, so on to San Francisco they went! Shirley was hired as a secretary for the architectural firm of Anshen and Allen, where she met her future husband, Jim Morton. She and Jim married on Dec. 16, 1958. They moved to Squaw Valley, California, where Jim was designing homes in the Lake Tahoe area, and Shirley served as the secretary for the Olympic Commission for the 1960 Winter Olympics. Jim and Shirley would often come back to Butte to visit her family and it was

during one of these trips that she and Jim began to purchase property in the Jackson Creek area of the Bridger Mountains just east of Bozeman. They permanently moved to the ranch at Jackson Creek in 1977. They expanded Green Mountain Ranch by adding property near Logan, Montana, in 1981. Shirley and Jim raised commercial cattle until 1985 when they began raising registered Red Angus and updated the ranch name to Green Mountain Red Angus. Shirley resided at the ranch at Jackson Creek until the winter of 2013, when she moved to Parkhaven in Manhattan, Montana. Shirley had many wonderful adventures throughout her life, but above it all she treasured and loved her family and many friends. Shirley was known as the Queen of the Casserole and could whip up an amazing dinner at a moment’s notice. She was an incredibly gracious hostess and always presented herself and her family with class and grace.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, James Morton, her parents, Francis and Frances Dowling, and her sister, Carol Miller. She is survived by her son, Bob (Julie) Morton, and her two grandsons, Tom and Jim Morton, of Three Forks, Montana, her much beloved sister, Joan Lutz of Butte, her nephew John (Becky) Lutz and niece Stephanie Lutz of Coppell, Texas, as well as her stepsons Jim (Kathy) Morton of Plymouth, Minnesota, and John Morton of Downers Grove, Illinois, numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, and many cousins in Washington and California. Shirley loved her many caregivers at Parkhaven, especially Nick Hamilton. A memorial service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held next summer.

Jung Family Named 2019 Farm Family of the Year by Farm Forum and Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce
The John and Stephanie Jung Family of Mina received the Farm Family of the Year Award on Nov. 22. (L to R): Brooke, John, Jacob, Stephanie, Shelby and Alex. Not pictured: Kale.
The 2019 Farm Family of the Year Award recipient is the John and Stephanie Jung family, Lazy J Bar Ranch, of Mina, South Dakota. This is the ninth year the Farm Forum has presented the Farm Family of the Year Award. The purpose is to recognize a family that goes above and beyond to represent farming and ranching and the spirit of agriculture in northeastern South Dakota. To be eligible, the recipients must be actively engaged in farm-
ing or ranching with the majority of income derived from production agriculture.
pasture, where two guard dogs live with and watch over their flock while the goats control leafy spurge.
Both John and Stephanie grew up in ranch and livestock operations. John grew up on a Simmental seedstock operation along with crop farming and started raising registered Red Angus in 1995. Stephanie spent her childhood on a cattle, sheep and grain operation and began raising registered Red Angus in 1988. They both continue in the Red Angus seedstock business under the Lazy J Bar brand and ranch name that both John’s grandfather and father were previously known for. They have four children: Alex, Brooke, Kale and Jacob.
John and Stephanie have both belonged to the 4-H Leaders Association for many years. They have both served the South Dakota Red Angus Association where Stephanie is currently vice president, marking her 20th consecutive year of being an executive board member. She is also the junior advisor for the South Dakota Junior Red Angus Association and serves on the registration committee of the Red Angus Association of America. Both John and Stephanie volunteer at numerous 4-H, junior and FFA shows during the year.
Although Lazy J Bar Ranch is now mainly registered Red Angus, they dabble a bit in the Simmental, Angus and club calf world as well as having a commercial cow herd that they use for embryo transplant. The Jungs host fall cattle sales online and offer Red Angus bulls for sale in a joint production sale each year. They also have a custom AI business and travel around the area each spring breeding cattle at various customer locations. Lazy J Bar Ranch is also home to 160 head of Boer meat goats, most registered in the American Boer Goat Registry. Jungs host an annual goat sale, where numerous goats are purchased by youth to show in 4-H, FFA and junior shows. When the kids are born in the spring, Steph rarely leaves the barn for two weeks as they may have more than 70 goats giving birth in four days, averaging over two kids each. The cattle and goats graze together in their

Their children learn what it’s like to ranch through daily life. Their two youngest, still at home, both have a start on a herd of their own and are involved in the cattle operation. Jacob is 11 and takes the ranch life very seriously, even learning about welding from his dad to make his own feed bunks. Kale, 17, is part of the Groton FFA program and is also involved in 4H. He shows goats and won the South Dakota Sweet 16 breeding goat show in 2018 during the Brown County Fair. Brooke, 24, raised 4-H calves and helped with chores. She lives on a farm near Barnard. The oldest, Alex, 29, and his wife, Shelby, live in Mina and run their own cattle on land they lease as Jung Cattle Co. Outside of ranch life, John and Steph both have jobs off the farm and enjoy volunteering at the Richland Church nursery on Sundays. n
