It’s a Great Time to be Red! Sharon and I started in the Red Angus business in 2000. We were drawn to the breed by its commitment to the commercial industry and focus on performance data evaluation. Our breed choice was met with mixed responses from our friends. The most astute cattlemen understood our choice and they knew we were making a long-term decision. However, others could not see beyond the hide color. Many cattlemen in our area were not familiar with Red Angus and I remember getting the question, “What breeds do you cross to get a Red Angus?” It was challenging in those early years to not move in another direction and it was not a good time to be red. But we could see the value in the cattle and the foundation that was built by those who came before us. Since we were commercial producers with a few registered Red Angus cows, we initially became our biggest bull customer. After a few years, others started asking questions and coming to look at our cattle. It’s not easy to establish bull sales regardless of color and it was still tough selling

red bulls into our market. We leased bulls and offered “buy-back programs” for the producers and made some progress. Inquiries about Red Angus-sired females became more common and we could offer both black and red-hided options. The popularity of the redhided Red Angus female was obvious, and it continues today. As we asked for feedback on why producers liked these cows, they listed the following traits: fertility, heat tolerance, fleshing ability and gentle dispositions. The advantages offered by Red Angus females make them unique and valuable to the industry. They have earned the title as “The Industry’s Most-Favored Female,” but we cannot take this for granted.

Board Commentary We must expand our efforts with data collection and reporting while maintaining selection pressure on performance and functional traits. In our market, the popularity of Red Angus females has led to more demand for Red Angus bulls. Many producers have learned the most efficient method to getting more desirable maternal traits is through Red Angus bulls. These bulls have developed a reputation for being efficient breeders, having calm dispositions and passing along the suite of traits needed for profitable beef production.
males, they really could not fathom producing red-hided steers. However, when producers communicated with buyers that their steers were indeed Red Angus, there was more acceptance especially when marketed in larger groups. It helped that Red Angus-sired feeder cattle were showing great performance in the feeding and packing segments. This helped create pull-through demand for our cattle. The Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program ensures the cattle wearing a “yellow tag” will deliver the performance results they have come to expect.
Also, it is interesting to see the changing opinions on red steers in the marketplace. Even when producers wanted Red Angus fe-
Our breed has enjoyed great success and the demand for Red Angus genetics has never been stronger. As one of the top five
beef breeds in the nation, every industry segment understands our value. We are a key component in the world’s largest genetic evaluation, and we will launch new selection indices in the near future. The FCCP program continues to set new records for enrollment and is approaching the critical mass necessary to make an even greater impact. Of course, the role of the Red Angus female in our success cannot be overstated and we must continue to build on the momentum that she provides. As we look into the future, it’s easy to become excited about our potential. It’s tough to gain ground in our industry and hard work lies ahead, but you cannot deny that “It’s a Great Time to be Red.” ■

Accomplishing more together than we could individually is the reason 17 beef breeds, including Red Angus, are part of the genetic evaluation partnership operated by International Genetic Solutions. What started as a collaboration between Red Angus and Simmental in 2010, with the goal of creating the industry’s first multi-breed EPDs, has now grown to become the world’s largest genetic evaluation for beef cattle. Breed associations from the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand are working together to create a huge database of cattle performance records and genotypic information, and to share the cost of using cutting-edge software and technology to calculate the most accurate EPDs possible. What IGS is doing today is so large and sophisticated, it was little more than a dream 5 years ago. To offer a just one example of how working with multiple breeds directly benefits Red Angus, Ryan Boldt, RAAA director of breed improvement, recently calculated that available data on Red Angus-sired calving events (and their associated calving-ease scores) is 20% larger through IGS than if Red Angus was conducting its genetic evaluation as a single breed.

10 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020
The overall IGS database currently contains pedigrees and performance records on more than 19 million animals. And even as impressive as that is, a more important feature is the continual addition of new data on younger animals that IGSmember breeds contribute on a weekly basis. Every genetic evaluation needs a constant flow of new phenotypic and genotypic data on the freshest young sires, the latest calf crops and newest females coming into production – as well as on older animals. The IGS structure fulfills this need extremely well. During calendar year 2019, birth weight records grew by 382,000 head, while the number of weaning weight records increased by 369,000. These large volumes of new data illustrate how substantial the IGS collaboration has become, and since more data is better than less, our resulting EPDs become increasingly accurate as a result.

Association Commentary We can rightly view the IGS genetic evaluation as a system that is constantly learning and getting smarter as new data is provided from each of the participating breeds. If a Gelbvieh/Balancer breeder from Missouri uses Red Angus for making Red Balancers, Red Angus EPDs are incrementally made more accurate upon the submission of this breeder’s data. Red Angus participates in IGS both because it is beneficial for our own breeders and for commercial cow-calf producers.
els for various traits without needing to make any further adjustments. For example, suppose a rancher in Kansas crossbreeds Red Angus and Simmental and desires to maintain his Milk EPDs between 14 and 24, which he views as enough milk, but not too much. This same range can be used when selecting Red Angus, Simmental and SimAngus bulls (again with no adjustment needed), and this rancher can be confident that he is keeping his herd’s milk genetics in the targeted zone.
Another benefit of multi-breed collaboration via IGS is that EPDs for all participating breeds are published on the same base, making them directly comparable across participating breeds. Commercial cow-calf producers who are crossbreeding Red Angus with one or more IGS breeds can select their desired EPD lev-
What’s ahead for IGS? During the next several years, there are at least two important ways we can expect the IGS genetic evaluation to advance further. First, EPDs will be calculated on more traits. Dry Matter Intake is a trait that Red Angus currently publishes as a single-breed EPD (Colorado State University completes the evaluation for this trait). However,
within the next 12-18 months, IGS will begin to calculate DMI EPDs on a multibreed basis, which will greatly increase the volume of intake records this EPD is based upon. The second likely development for IGS is the inclusion of more breeds, perhaps even some of considerable size. As more breeds decide to join IGS, the overall strength of the evaluation will continue to ratchet upward. RAAA expects IGS to maintain its position as the globe’s largest genetic evaluation for beef cattle, and we will remain active in supporting its growth and technological advancements. Red Angus participates in IGS both because it is beneficial for our own breeders and for commercial cow-calf producers. It’s a collaborative system that is working well and producing many benefits for all involved. ■

We breed cattle based on how they perform in the real world and are maternally focused and profit drive. We pay close attention to each cow family and how they perform against one another. We structure our breeding program off balance, use multiple-trait selection, and understand the importance of having the right type of cow that thrives in a forage-based environment. 87762 446th Ave. Bassett, NE 68714 Call or Email:

Marketing Update by Katie Ochsner, Commercial Marketing Coordinator
Better Bulls Make Better Calves When we closed the door on 2019, I’m sure many readers were not sad to see it go. The year brought trial after trial to cattlemen and women across the country in the form of natural disasters, a poor cattle market and other challenges. This likely put many ranchers in a worse financial state than they came into the year with, leaving most hoping for a better 2020. When financial pressure is applied, ranchers search for areas in their operations to cut cost. While it may be tempting to cut costs in the bull budget this year, it’s important to keep in mind the long-term ramifications that decision could have. Let’s take a step back, return to the basics of the cattle business, and remember why it’s still important to invest in quality genetics, even during challenging times. Better bulls make better calves. Better calves bring more money. This isn’t a novel statement, rather one that is considered common knowledge. However, it’s also a fact we may need reminding of when making important financial and management decisions in 2020. We’ve all seen examples of the influence that using the best bulls from the most reputable seedstock suppliers can have on price of calves. Auctioneers get excited when it comes time to announce that the next group of calves is from a ranch that buys top bulls from the best outfits, because they know those calves should bring the most money of the day. The 2018 Superior Livestock Auction analysis prepared by Kansas State University quantifies just how much value can be gained by purchasing sires from reputable seedstock operations. The analysis revealed that calves labeled as ‘Superior Progressive Genetics’ received a $0.77/cwt premium. The average weight of calves in the analysis was 568 pounds, so the per-head dollar advantage was $4.37 per calf. That premium is rewarded for the use of reputable genetics to produce quality calves. Pair that with the $2.98/cwt premium for Red Angus calves enrolled in the Feeder Calf Certification Program, and you’ll 24 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020
be in a great position to have a profitable year in 2020. As we approach the spring bull sale season, keep in mind the reward for purchasing quality bulls and, at the very least, keep your bull budget the same. The tough year that we’re coming out of could provide a unique opportunity to purchase better genetics with the same dollars. It may well be the best time to stock up if you are in need of a few extra bulls, or allow ranchers to make purchases further up in the sale order to attain those bulls with a stronger genetic profile. Taking a look at the bigger picture of the beef supply chain, we’ll find another reason to purchase quality genetics this coming year. Along with ranchers, cattle feeders had a tough go of it in 2019. Adverse weather conditions caused higher-than-normal death loss in feed yards and put them behind. Many are likely still trying to dig out from that mess. Considering that, feeders won’t be looking to spend any extra in the next few years and will be less likely to bid on poorer calves. Companies such as Top Dollar Angus were built on the idea that cattle backed by better genetics are worth more, particularly when those genetics are verified. Gary Vandiver with Vandiver Farms Feedyard works closely with the Top Dollar Angus team and stated, “What we have learned at the feedlot level is that the value of owning good cattle will prove its worth day in and day out. Whether it's a birth weight EPD, herd health, feedlot performance or a meat-quality attribute that we have genetically selected for, all levels of the production chain benefit from better genetic selection in good times and in bad.
Marketing Update “It all begins with the cow-calf producer to make the right genetic decisions that benefit them as well as the next owner of their cattle." Especially in the coming year, calves backed by good genetics that can be counted on for a return on investment will be the ones feeders will spend their dollars on.
The Other Half of the Genetic Package Bull selection is of utmost importance, and as they should, commercial producers spend much time and effort determining their seedstock supplier(s), then selecting which specific bulls to purchase. But let’s also keep in mind that the sire is only half of the genetic package. For all the time and effort that commercial cattlemen dedicate to bull selection, the dam side should also be considered highly important.
The Red Navigator test for commercial Red Angus females can help commercial producers retain genetically superior commercial females in their herd. This ensures those high-dollar bulls are mated to the best females, resulting in a quality calf crop. Contact RAAA, and our staff would be happy to share more about testing with Red Navigator. To end on a personal note, I enjoy my job immensely because of the kind of people I get to work with. You are determined, hard-working ranch folks who persevere through the good and bad while supporting each other along the way. I’m hopeful that 2020 will be a fruitful year for all of you, and genuinely believe that placing quality genetics on both sides of the pedigree will help achieve that goal. ■

Member Services Bulletin by Amanda Travis, Assistant Registration Department Manager Reporting calf data can be time consuming, especially when you only sit down to register calves a couple times a year. Make yourself a notepad of different tips that have helped you previously and keep them handy for when you are entering data. Being organized with calving records and having your resources readily available can help with the submission process. Members also have access to video tutorials located under the Announcements tab in REDSPro. If you still have questions, email the National Office at info@redangus.org or call. Members can register calves online in REDSPro or by paper on a registration application. Below are a few tips that can be helpful when entering data. Spring Herd Inventory Due March 2 The Spring Herd Inventory update is the opportunity for members to dispose of females that have either died or have been sold as commercial. Heifers will be included on the Spring Cow Inventory if they are 16 months of age as of Jan. 1. The inventory will determine the Spring THR assessments that are billed in July. Females listed on your active inventory as of March 2 will be included in the Spring THR assessment billing in July. Heifer Exposure Request Dates Revised The Heifer Exposure request and due dates have been updated to better fit the needs of the members and REDSPro. The updated request date for Fall Heifer Exposure is February 7 and is due by April 30. These updated dates follow the timeline of when females would be exposed and allows the member to submit the exposure dates accurately.
Animals on Hold Review your inventory for any animals on hold that have not met certain DNA requirements. To do so, log on to REDSPro, go to the Reports/Downloads tab and click My Reports. On the left, click Active Inventory--Whole Herd and on the right select Animals On Hold, then click Generate Report. Cows or bulls that are on hold on B, U or Z status will not be able to have a calf record reported. The cow or bull must meet the certain DNA requirements before they can be updated or have calf records reported. Register Calves All at Once When calves are registered together within one job in REDSPro or together on a registration application paper, they will have the opportunity to be ratioed together. Once the calves are submitted, REDSPro will contemporary group the calves together per the member’s set management codes, sex of the animal, weaning dates, etc. If calves are registered separately, but the member needs them to be grouped together for contemporary purposes, please email amanda@redangus.org to have them grouped together. Reporting all calf records at once also plays a part within the Stayability EPD. Reporting Dead or Sold Calves Report calf records for every female including dead calves and commercial calves. When reporting a dead calf, a tattoo/ID must be provided for the calf record. If the calf was not tattooed, 1x, 2x, etc. will be sufficient as an ID. The disposal code provided determines the amount of calf data that is required. If the calf is stillborn or died at birth, only an ID, calf year and a registration type “C” has to be provided. If the calf died before weaning or after, all of the required calving information has to be provided such as

ID, birthdate, color, mating, HPS and registration type. View the Ownership History When you search the registration number of an animal under Animal Search, scroll down and click Expanded Report at the bottom of the page. This will show each owner and the date of sale of when a percentage of the animal was transferred. While entering calf registrations, if you have an error stating you were not the owner of the dam at calving, you can reference the ownership history to verify the female was transferred to you with the correct date of sale. The date of sale of a female is very important because it sets the ownership date. In order to register AI or natural-born calves, you have to be the owner of the dam at the time of calving. It has been scientifically proven that laughter can be contagious Here are some jokes to tell at the next event or sale that you attend to spread some cheer. What did the mama cow say to the calf? It’s pasture bedtime. Why do cows have hooves instead of feet? Because they lactose.

Juniors ‘Learn by Doing’ at Young Stockman Program by Shaye Koester, JRA President
Q: What happens when you put over 30 junior members together to learn about the Red Angus female? A: You experience an event full of learning, team building and fun. The future of the beef industry is bright with these inquisitive and eager junior members! The 2019 Young Stockman Program was held in Manhattan, Kansas, Dec. 6-8. Thirty-six juniors and chaperones attended the event that was focused on the Red Angus female and balancing terminal and maternal traits. Cow-Buying Simulation On Friday night attendees started the first steps of a cow-buying simulation that was put together by Barrett Simon, RAAA commercial marketing specialist. In this simulation, juniors analyzed data and scenarios on different sets of Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced heifers and proceeded to calculate breakeven prices. Saturday afternoon each team had the opportunity to bid on these sets of heifers in our auction, keeping in mind the scenarios and breakeven prices that were determined earlier. This simulation
was completed on Sunday morning. Juniors learned how profitable they were with their buying selections and connected the final dots of understanding the value of the heifers. Foot Structure Dr. Bob Weaber, Kansas State University animal science Extension specialist, presented how to score foot and leg structure. He started with a presentation on the purpose and research behind the subject. Later, juniors went to a pen of live heifers and worked with Weaber to practice scoring these structures. Cattle Handling Cattle handling demonstrations were also a part of this event. Two pens of cattle were present. One contained mature cows and the other contained newly weaned calves. Jack Lemmon, Kansas State University cow-calf unit staff, demonstrated how to work both sets of cattle and explained flight zones and balance points to the juniors. Reproduction Segment Another wonderful demonstration was on pregnancy checking. Dr. David Grieger, Kansas State University animal science professor, presented about the importance of females being reproductively sound, the different methods of breeding females and the different methods to check for a pregnancy. The highlight of this segment was having reproduction tracts with fetuses put into plastic tubs for juniors to practices pregnancy checking and aging fetuses. Kniebel Cattle Co. Thanks to Kevin and Mary Ann Kniebel, Saturday evening was spent visiting a fourth-generation Flint Hills ranch using Red Angus genetics across both purebred and commercial aspects of their operation. On this ranch visit, juniors were able to see the Red Angus female in action and how she fit into their ranch. Attendees

- Breeding Red Angus since 1973 46 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020
Sale weight is an economically relevant trait in beef cattle. Therefore, it is generally of high interest when making selection decisions to look at the different weight-trait EPDs. These weight EPDs include Birth Weight, Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight. Each of these different time points are when weight measurements are collected on seedstock animals. All weight traits are moderately to highly genetically correlated with each other. This means that an animal that is heavier at one time tends to be heavier at a later time point. Within the IGS Multi-Breed Evaluation, the BW, WW and YW EPDs are evaluated in a model that includes birth, weaning and yearling weight data. Using each of these three different weight endpoints is appropriate because these measurements are genetically correlated. This means that some of the genes that influence measurements at one time point also influence performance at a subsequent time point. The second advantage to including multiple weight measurements in a single genetic evaluation is that it helps to account for sequential culling. This is important for traits like yearling weight where generally observations are only recorded on animals that performed well at weaning. Including both measurements in a single genetic evaluation accounts for this situation and controls the potential bias that could occur if the earlier measurements are not included. Within a genetic evaluation, each observation is compared within a contemporary group. A contemporary group is comprised of animals that had equal opportunity to perform within the same environment. This step helps to account for the environmental influence on recorded phenotypes. If an animal experiences a favorable environment, they may have a favorable phenotype (heavy weaning weight, for example), but may not necessarily have as strong underlying genetics for the trait. Within the EPD calculation process, the environmental influence is removed from EPDs to identify the genetic potential of the animal. Even so, the questions sometimes arise as to whether animals with higher or lower EPDs actually reflect those differences. To answer that question for these three traits, a straightforward analysis was conducted to determine if there were differences in progeny performance due to differences in sires’ EPDs for the trait. For the analysis, the sires where divided up into four quartiles based on their EPD for each trait. The first quartile represents sires that should produce animals that were the heaviest progeny at each measurement time point, and the fourth quartile signifies sires that were expected to produce lighter animals at birth, weaning and yearling.

EPD Comparisons for Weight Traits As the next step, all 2018-born animals with data submitted in the RAAA database were used as our test group of animals to determine the difference in the average weights aligned with sire EPD differences. Adjusted weights were used to help make all phenotypic observations more comparable. Additionally, the averages were taken over large groups of animals in an effort to minimize individual environmental influences over the observations. This evaluation included data from 4,776 unique sires and 69,991 of their progeny. The graph depicts the different average phenotypic measurements for each of the traits and each of the quartile groups.

Results show that the animals with more positive EPDs, on average, produced heavier progeny for all traits. This is exactly what the EPDs are designed to do. They are constructed to predict average differences in progeny performance when mated to genetically similar dams. This aspect of EPDs is very important, because these results suggest that if selection for these traits is performed using EPDs, meaningful genetic improvement can be achieved. Another important message is that you can always find non-conforming animals that were sired by high-growth animals that have poor growth and vice versa. Within every trait, variation exists. This may be caused by the specific genes that the animal inherits or the environment that each animal experiences. However, when averages of groups are examined, the results follow the predictions. Higher growth animals do produce progeny that tend to reflect sire EPD differences. Selection based on EPDs is the best method available for making genetic progress. The calculation process takes in the largest amount of information and uses that data and information to estimate genetic predictions. The amount of information that is available on an animal to make genetic predictions is represented in the accuracy associated with each specific EPD. Lower accuracy EPDs have less data and information available to estimate the resulting value. No matter the accuracy associated with the prediction, variability is expected in individual phenotypes across a calf crop. However, the average differences among sires when an adequate sample size is achieved will reflect the difference in EPD values. ■

Mill Iron Triangle Ranch Goes the Extra Miles by Laura Nelson, for American Red Angus Magazine
Each heifer is unique, but the moment of triumph often sounds about the same. She spins around, nuzzles the wet calf, and lets out a low murmur with a lick. “That might be the best sound in the world,” smiled Greg Haydal of the Mill Iron Triangle Ranch. “You can just tell by the tone; you know it when she gets it.” The eastern Montana rancher has heard that murmur of maternal recognition thousands of times over the years. Still, when a new momma gets it right the first time, it’s almost gospel-like good news. “There’s no playbook, no exact manual for calving heifers. You have to take each one on as an individual,” he said, navigating his flatbed pickup south of Miles City, Montana, to the Mizpah Road. Down gravel and rutted twotracks, this group of coming 3-year-olds have just weaned their first calves here on the short-grass prairie. There’s another group of heifers on the Tongue River, a herd north of Broadus on the ranch’s home place east of Miles City. This 56 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020
completes a 100-some-mile loop of about 25,000 acres of deeded and leased land, scattered across the broken hills. “You can darn sure wear a pickup out around here,” he smiled and tapped a finger on the steering wheel, rumbling over sharp gravel. But the expanse can also help mitigate risk. A dry year in Miles City may be offset by a heavier hay crop in Broadus. They’ve built flexibility and resilience in what they run, too. Between Haydal and his business partner, Butch Sweet, they have the home-raised herd of about 350 Red Angus cows – the “gut herd” – and 500-some purchased heifers – the “speculation herd.” They calve the heifers in the spring, sort and group the offspring into five or six uniform marketing group loads, then sell the heifers as coming 3-year-olds.

Mill Iron Triangle Ranch Goes the Extra Miles “Everybody wants young cows, but nobody wants to calve heifers,” said Haydal. “We just found this niche market where we’re basically selling our labor.” A younger Haydal was working as an insulator at the Laurel, Montana, refinery and dreaming about ranching when he found a job calving heifers for Sweet in Miles City. Back then, his day labor turned into a partnership, and over the past 24 years, the partnership grew into this far-flung, shared cowherd. “Butch is just a good, old-time cowboy. Up until he was about 70, he was still horseback, would ride all day,” Haydal said. “There’s really nothing about a cow that doesn’t excite Butch. He eats and walks and dreams about cows. It’s just what he loves. He’s got a work ethic second to none.” Chris Brookman, a rancher, livestock dealer, Superior sale representative and friend, says Haydal lives up to his own admiration of his mentor and partner. “Greg just has an eye for cattle,” Brookman said. “He picks cattle with good maternal traits, good body frames, good temperament. He works a lot with those cattle once he gets them home to make sure they’ll make a good cow for the next guy.” Haydal handles the heifers with horses, dogs, buggies and fourwheelers so they’re ready for any scenario in their next herd. They

buy large groups of 2-year-olds from Red Angus breeders set to calve in March and April, with a hard cutoff at 60 days to get the heifers healed, cycled and bred before sale day. A Labor of Love “To make that kind of thing work, you have to have three things,” Brookman said: Facilities, manpower and the sheer ‘want to.’ At Haydal’s Mill Iron Triangle Ranch, heifers can cycle through a calving barn for one-on-one attention if needed. There, Haydal and his helpers make note of disposition and characteristics that will matter to the next owners. Haydal’s wife Mary helps around her work schedule at the VA hospital in town and they typically hire a couple teenagers to help during calving season.

Mill Iron Triangle Ranch Goes the Extra Miles In addition to her career as a social worker, their adult daughter Nicki “spends every spare minute with us,” Haydal said, along with her fiancé, Casey. Greg and Mary’s young son Ty dreams of skipping school to spend more time at the ranch.
It’s not hard to see them all falling in line with their father’s ‘want to’ work ethic that he admired in Sweet. But Haydal wonders now if a ‘want to’ is enough to make it in the ranching business.
“He wants to be out here with me always, around the clock. He’s so good with the cow deal – almost a photographic memory, remembering cow numbers and who’s done what. It’s all he wants to do,” Haydal chuckled. “It’s definitely a team effort. I couldn’t get along without those kids; no doubt about it.”
“It’s getting tougher all the time for a young person to just bail into this industry. Lease prices and the pressure from nonranching interests on the land just make it tough to pencil it with a cow,” he said. “A young fellow nowadays has to have more than just a work ethic to get going in this industry.” The key might be directing that work ethic toward diversifying income sources and building a quality herd of substantial quantity. Quantity and Quality About 15 years ago, Haydal bought some Red Angus heifers on a lark. On sale day, he was surprised when the Red Angus females out-sold his otherwise predominantly black calf crop. That market signal spoke loudly to his cow sense, and Haydal swiftly switched gears to the Red Angus breed.
Greg Haydal uses EPDs and bloodlines to select his genetics to hit both the feeding side of the industry as well as top-quality replacement females.

Mill Iron Triangle Ranch Goes the Extra Miles As they built their home-raised Red Angus herd and started purchasing more Red Angus heifers to calve, Haydal and Sweet made a commitment to quality, and a commitment to verifying that quality. Every calf that hits the ground gets a Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification yellow tag for genetic, source and age verification. When they buy Red Angus bulls, they look for those in the top 15% for profitability. They market all their calves through the Top Dollar Angus program, which certifies cattle at the top 25% of growth and carcass traits. “We have to pay a little extra for those bulls, but it’s money well spent. We want to be sure we have gain and grade in there, because in order for me to make money, everybody’s got to make money,” Haydal said. “Nowadays, you have to take advantage of every program there is out there to get the most you can for your calves.” For him, in addition to the FCCP and Top Dollar Angus program, that means certifying calves as Non-Hormone Treated Cattle, too. Feedlot and female customers continue to come back for more year after year, Haydal said, which is his best marker for success. “Those coming 3-year-olds of his usually ring the bell on sale day,” Brookman said. “He’s a student of EPDs and he studies

Join us for our 18th year of providing high performance Red Angus bulls to commercial producers and seedstock breeders alike. Also offering a select group of registered females.
Mill Iron Triangle Ranch Goes the Extra Miles The Extra Miles After a 30-some-mile-drive on highway, gravel and muddy twotracks to check water and look over the recently weaned heifers, he’s back on the highway. Over the miles, Haydal vacillated between stories of Butch and other cowboys in his past and dreams about the future; what it might look like if he slowed down some day, his family, Red Angus bloodlines, the relationships built around buying, calving and selling these good, young, Red Angus heifers.
said. “That’s a big reason we like those easy-fleshing, docile females. In this country, they have to thrive in extremes – 30 degrees below in the winter, 100 plus in the summer – and they have to keep that body condition up with as little input as possible.”
Even when the cattle markets are less than ideal, he figures he’ll still be paid for the extra effort.
The extra time grazing adds up to more pounds and healthier calves at the end of the season, just like his extra miles on the road, extra labor calving heifers; extra reliance on family bonds; extra effort studying genetics and EPDs and extra planning to enroll calves in the right marketing programs pay off at each bend in the road.
“Junk is junk, and it will really kill you in a down market. There’s always someone looking for good cattle. They’ve got a future. And,” he said, “there are worse things that could happen to a guy than to be stuck with a bunch of good, young, red cows.”
In the summer heat on the open prairie, Haydal said he easily notes the Red Angus difference: “The black cows are wadded up at the water tank, but the red cows are out grazing, going to work.”
In additional to cattle that will perform in the feedlot or the maternity ward, he looks for those that will adapt to a wide range of environments, which opens more markets for their heifers. They’ve sold coming 3-year-olds or feeders to Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon and Idaho.
“Butch, when he’s really excited about something, says, ‘That’s gospel, Gregory,’” Haydal laughed. “One of the deals he used to tell me was, ‘Every day, if you’re doing something and you think you’re ready to quit,’ he’d say, ‘Just put another 30 minutes in. At the end of the year, that extra 30 minutes a day will make a heck of a difference.’
“If they can do well here, they’ll do well about anywhere,” he
“That’s where he’d say, ‘That’s gospel, Gregory.’” ■

Putting the Best Foot Forward by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine
A deep-bodied, easy-fleshing bull with stellar EPDs is every bull buyer’s dream, but that dream can come stumbling down if the bull’s structural soundness doesn’t meet foundational rubric standards. When walking through a pen of bulls, Harold Bertz, director of commercial marketing for the Red Angus Association of America, encourages buyers to consider red flags related to structure: 1. A bull that is limping or not filling his stride 2. A bull with swollen joints especially in his hock and pastern 3. A bull with hoof swelling and improper claw presentation Feet First
Bertz said he uses a ‘feet first’ approach when he inspects an animal. “I look at the front feet first. That’s generally where you’ll see the claws touching each other and crossing over. I also look if it’s a straight line down or if there’s a gap between their two front claws, especially at the top. You don’t want them to be touching but the bigger the gap at the top the more room there is for the front claws to touch at the bottom. In some cases, they’ll already be overlapping and that’s a problem.” Next, he evaluates the back feet. “On the back foot I’m looking for depth of heel. What I’ve found is structure will influence how hooves wear so a poorly structured bull tends to have worse feet. It’s kind of an experience factor but if the back hoof is shallower than the front, you’re probably approaching a problem. The angle of the hoof’s hairline should be the same as the angle of the base of the hoof.” Ryan Boldt, RAAA director of breed improvement, described ideal foot structure as having two symmetrical toes with adequate heel depth. Additionally, the hoof 70 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020
walls – the hard, outer covering of the hoof – should be straight. Although not a hard and fast rule, Bertz has observed that darker colored hooves are harder thus withstanding more, whereas lighter colored hooves are softer and break down easier. Dr. Bob Weaber, Extension specialist and professor at Kansas State University, emphasized the importance of analyzing a bull’s angles. “The conformation of the animal’s hoof is related to limb and joint angulation. Animals that are very straight shouldered or have irregular angulation of knee or pastern can contribute to lameness due to additional stress on joints caused by lack of flex or cushion for movement.” Weaber continued, “Likewise on the rear leg, animals with a straight stifle joint and hock are prone to injury and lameness.” The bull’s shoulder should pitch to the top of the leg at a 45-degree angle. He should have a slight slope from hooks to pins and again from pins to the stifle joint making another 45-degree angle. A bull should walk with his head moving naturally and freely, not stuck down or up, and he should have a strong topline. Passing It On The genetic impact of structural issues in a herd should be considered, especially in bulls. “Depending on the trait related to foot structure, most current heritability estimates seem to be low to moderate,” Boldt said. Good feet are quite literally at the base of everything a beef animal does in their lifetime from traveling to feed and water, grazing, exercise and reproduction. Making a sound initial investment by selecting a structurally correct bull is important as is ensuring that the structural integrity of the herd is monitored. “The main focus should be evaluating the feet on all animals within a herd,” Boldt explained. “Generally, most guidelines recommend first scoring cattle when they are yearlings and then they can also be evaluated once yearly. The main goal should be to identify animals that are not acceptable in terms of foot structure and cull those animals from the herd.”
Putting the Best Foot Forward Bertz echoed his colleague’s sentiments. “The analogy gets over done but bulls are the biggest athlete on your operation in terms of what they’re expected to do in a short period of time. Feet and legs are relatively heritable traits. You can improve them rather quickly, but you can also destroy them rather quickly. Bulls have to perform their job for a season, but their daughters are going to be in your herd for a long time.” Environment The other factor that can influence an animal’s phenotype outside of genetics is the environment to which he is exposed. “When traits are low to moderately heritable, the environment has a large effect on an animal’s expression of that trait,” said Boldt. “Lameness in cattle can be caused by a variety of ailments. These include bacterial infection or ‘footrot,’ digital dermatitis or ‘hairy heel wart,’ injuries to the hoof or limb, or abnormalities in hoof structure or growth,” said Weaber, describing some of the most common causes of lameness. Weaber’s colleague, A.J. Tarpoff, DVM, summarized footrot’s causation as an instance when the skin between
72 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020
an animal’s toes is compromised in some way thus breaking down the natural barrier allowing bacteria to enter and cause an infection. “Once the bacteria break through the skin barrier, they release a toxin that causes necrosis and destruction of the cells. This cellular destruction leads to large amounts of inflammation that results in swelling. The foot swells uniformly and obvious lameness occurs,” he explained in his article, “Managing Footrot in Beef Cattle.” He cites commonly visited areas that allow for build-up of mud and moisture to be a culprit for environmental contamination. Tarpoff went on to encourage moving mineral tubs and supplement sites and ensuring tanks aren’t leaking and the ground around them is staying as dry as possible. If caught early enough, footrot can be successfully treated. Treatment typically consists of an injectable antimicrobial including oxytetracycline, tulathromycin, ceftiofur, florfenicol and sulfa products. He encourages all producers to discuss diagnosing and treating lameness issues with their veterinarian. “Physical injuries to the foot and limb can be avoided in some cases by making sure pen and pastures are free of metal, wire or other objects that cattle may step on or become entangled,” said Weaber, encouraging producers to keep obvious litter cleaned up.

Putting the Best Foot Forward “Picking up wire, cans, tin roofing material or other debris in pastures when it is observed can be helpful.” Economic Impact Although structure is an additional detail to which producers must pay attention, Weaber insists the economic cost of introducing a structurally unsound bull to one’s herd is substantial. “Losing the productivity of a bull before or after a breeding season due to lameness that results in culling may incur a substantial loss in value of the bull as a breeding animal. Depending on the severity of the injury or response to treatment the animal may need to be euthanized.” He continued, “If you lose a bull to lameness during the breeding season, you may have a higher than normal rate of cows that don’t settle and are open at pregnancy check time. Losses can easily run into the thousands of dollars due to the lameness of a bull. If the bull has poor genetics for hoof or limb attributes and passes these to females you retain in the herd, the losses may continue for a number of years. Both of these situations highlight the importance of vigilance related to selection and monitoring of beef bulls during the breeding season. A bull that goes lame during
74 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020
the breeding season will obviously result in reduced breed up, the cost of purchasing an additional bull to take the lame bull’s place is a cost to the producer.” Cattlemen must also take into account the fact that a lame bull’s salvage value is drastically less than the cost of the bull in good condition. That combined with veterinarian bills, medicine to treat the lameness and a decreased calving rate results in extreme woes. At the end of the day, Bertz believes that the best way to find a bull with structural integrity is to buy from a reputable seedstock producer. “A lot of breeders are working hard to make sure they’re getting animals without structural issues.” He said that buyers should do their homework in advance and if they are serious about a bull and would like to see better pictures of his feet, to go ahead and ask the seller to send images of the bull walking on hard ground. “Things get really busy for seedstock guys right before sale day so if a buyer wants to do this, they should ask for images of bulls they are very serious about and they should allow the producer a lot of time because this isn’t always an easy ask.”

Putting the Best Foot Forward Bertz encourages those buyers who aren’t completely confident in their ability to evaluate structure to invite a fellow cattleman they trust to help them and even attend sales together. The Long Game When the search for a good bull is over and the genetic investment steps off of the trailer at his new home, the task of keeping the bull structurally sound is passed on to the new owner of the bull. Bulls have a short period of time when they have a lot of work to do but that’s no reason to founder them after breeding season. They have months to recover and an appropriate nutrition plan should be implemented so that their feet don’t suffer from overfeeding. The adage, “A horse is only as good as his feet,” is easily concluded to be the same truth for bulls. ■

Protect Your Genetics Investment by Sarah Hill for American Red Angus Magazine A cattle producer goes out to check on his herd during breeding season. As he approaches the gate, he quickly sees that something is amiss – the expensive new herd bull he purchased is nowhere to be seen. A search reveals the worst scenario – the bull fell down a ravine, breaking its neck. entire herd. Work with your agent to make sure you know what you are covered for and if the premium cost makes sense.
Now what does the cattleman do? The cows need to be bred, and he’s out the money that was spent on that new bull. While nothing can be done immediately about getting the cows bred, bull buyers have another option for getting their money back on bull purchases in the form of insurance. Although some bull buyers may see insurance as an additional investment, there is substantial evidence that purchasing coverage on a newly acquired bull may be the way to go. Fully Covered “We bought a bull for $12,000 and turned him out. Eight days later, I went to check on him, and he’d broken his leg,” said Bryce Risa of Northern Lites Red Angus, Upham, Montana. “Thankfully, we had him insured.”
Managing the Costs According to Robin Souza, an ag director with specialty insurance brokerage, Vindati, full mortality coverage can be selected in such a way that additional endorsements can be added for accidents, sickness and disease to adjust the cost. “It’s a case of what are you most worried about?” she said. “How are you going to sleep at night compared to the cost? What are you comfortable self-insuring?”
You don’t buy insurance thinking you’ll need to use it, but it if you do, it makes you feel a little better getting your money back on that bull.
When assessing mortality or loss-of-use insurance for a bull purchase, Don Moody, managing director of Insure My Forage, recommends reviewing the list of perils that are covered.
“There’s a big advantage to having a separate mortality insurance policy versus having the bull covered on your blanket insurance policy for your ranch,” Moody said. “You also take the risk that if you have a loss of that bull, then it reflects negatively on your premiums in following years.” However, Moody notes that if you have open range, it doesn’t always make sense to have full coverage on your 84 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020
Coverage can be the full amount or only 80% of the value for mortality, according to Souza. Policies are annual and renewable, as long as that bull is viable.
“The second that bull goes into back-up to become a clean-up bull, I’d consider reducing the dollars of coverage, adding him to the herd coverage or dropping the coverage on him,” Moody recommended. “You don’t buy insurance thinking you’ll need to use it, but it if you do, it makes you feel a little better getting your money back on that bull,” Risa said. “Our experience with our bull that broke his leg sold us on it. It gives you a little extra assurance. Once we’ve had a bull for about two years or so, we’ve usually got enough calves out of him to justify the cost of the insurance.”
Protect Your Genetics Investment Another consideration is that mortality insurance can cover an entire herd or operation, not just highdollar purchases like herd bulls. “Mortality insurance in that situation is determined based on county rates depending on the risks in that area,” Moody said. “Depending on the area, blizzards, contaminated water or something else might be an issue.” Consider if you live in an area that is more prone to cattle rustling, environmental hazards, contaminated feed and/or water, or if that bull will be taken on the show circuit. “A lot of commercial guys think a bull is a bull is a bull,” Risa said. “Bulls can get pretty expensive if you want to get better genetics. Insurance can help you get back what you spent on that bull, no matter how much – or how little - because you’ll still need to replace him.” Special Circumstances If you are buying a bull that requires transportation across state lines, you may also want to contact your insurance provider about transportation or cargo insurance – and make sure the policy covers the animal whether they are transported by your own vehicle or in a hired truck. Transportation coverage can also apply if a bull is being shipped to a sale or show. “You need coverage from origin to destination,” Moody said. “Once the animal is on the premises, then mortality coverage kicks in.” “For any ag commodity, a lot of farmers buy a policy and think they have coverage, and never call their insurance broker,” said Souza. “We also have a scheduled location policy, where the animals are covered if we know where they are. Depending on the policy, if you don’t know where the animal is, policies may vary between carriers. Policies may also only cover within so many miles of a state border or on premises only, or only if you own the bull, not lease him.” If you lease out a bull, be sure to read your policy or call your broker. 86 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2020

A Balance of calving ease, performance, & carcass. Affordable genetics Buying experience you are sure to enjoy. Our silent auction is a customer favorite. Selling sons of Oracle, Old Glory & 368 Easy Calver lead our offering of bulls.
Protect Your Genetics Investment “You still have to have an insurable interest in the bull,” Moody said. “A good, knowledgeable broker can help. Whoever has custody of the bull should also put it on their insurance schedule and can list the owner as an additional insuree.” A lot of people think about the loss of the bull itself, but bulls can also do a lot of damage as well, such as if the bull gets out and causes an accident on a roadway. Livestock-in-the-road accidents are usually the responsibility of the livestock owner or the person caring for the animal, resulting in a liability claim. Insurance coverage for an accident with livestock in the roadway would not be covered under a mortality policy, but would look to a farm-owner policy, more specifically, liability insurance. “Liability claims can go into the millions very quickly, especially if there are multiple passengers in a car,” said Souza. Ranching involves a lot of risk, especially when breeding animals are involved. Mitigating some of that risk through mortality and loss-of-use insurance can help protect valuable breeding investments against unforeseen misfortunes and is an overall wise business practice. ■

Member News In Memory Benjamin Miner Benjamin Miner, 37, of Cavour, South Dakota, died Nov. 29, 2019, as the result of a tragic vehicle accident. Ben was born March 6, 1982, to Don and Tami (Olson) Miner. He graduated from Huron High School in 2000, where he enjoyed playing hockey, football and spending time with his friends. After high school, he graduated from Lake Area Vocational Tech in Watertown. His love of the mountains and snowboarding led him to Keystone, Colorado. On June 5, 2010, Ben married the wild west river brumby, Shawn. Together they had four beautiful daughters, Bayla, Charlotte, Ada and Maren, whom he loved so much, yet was strict with. Ben had a heart of gold. He could light up a room as soon as he walked in. He was someone that made you feel welcome, as though you had known him his whole life. He had a great love for the outdoors, hunting, farming, family and friends. His outgoing personality, love for life and upbeat attitude will be greatly missed.
