The Red Angus Cow is a Consummate Professional As I sit here on a Friday evening, I, like many others, have been keeping watch on the “maternity ward” awaiting the future of our herd to hit the ground. It’s always an exciting time of the year as we watch the next generation being born and see if our breeding decisions that were made almost a year ago live up to our expectations. Many long days and nights are involved as well as many highs and likely a few lows. It is a labor of love for most of us and a lifestyle that we wouldn’t change. Calving season always gives me some extra time to think about the beef business and what drives it. For my own operation as well as many others, the one thing that drives us is the cow. She may not spend a large amount of time in the limelight like some of the more popular bulls do, but she is the one that likely stays around in the herd for years after those bulls have been replaced by another – or perhaps several bulls. Whether you operate a registered herd or a commercial herd, the value of great females is critical to your business and profitability. The Red Angus female has risen to a stature of prominence over the course of the last several years by being the most sought-after female in both the registered market and the commercial market. I am sure that most of you have heard this before and it is something that we as a breed should be very proud of. But how did we get to this point? What makes the Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced female “The Cow?” A key part of the success of the Red Angus female is the fact that we as breeders have always kept economically important traits at the forefront of

8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2020

our breeding decisions. Not all breeds have followed this ideal and if you remember back in the 90s, some cows from other breeds made great shade for their calves but not much else. So, what makes a great cow? The real answer will vary from environment to environment but the basics will be relatively close everywhere. She needs to be fertile, breed back in a timely fashion while nursing a calf. She needs to maintain her body condition on the resources available without costing the producer extra money in added input costs. She needs to be sound on her feet and legs if she is going to stay in the herd as a productive female. She needs to produce adequate milk to raise her calf in her environment without added costs of extra feed. She needs to have a quality udder that will allow her to stay in the herd for years of maximum production. These are all pretty basic traits that we all strive for and that in which the Red Angus female excels. The Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced female is a consummate professional when it comes to bringing economics to play in the real world. It is no accident that other breed associations are looking to partner with Red Angus and add those valuable traits to their programs. Simply stated, there is not another breed of cattle in existence that can be used in a crossbreeding scenario and improve its parental base like a Red Angus female. She is “The Cow.” ■

Creating Valuable Pregnancies Cow-calf producers spend a lot of money on reproduction. Getting spring-calving cows and heifers bred is always a top priority this time of year, and rightly so. It is much like planting season for a farmer. All hands-on-deck and a non-stop effort until the task is complete. Money flows out for breeding inputs such as new bulls, semen and soundness exams on older bulls, health treatments, synchronization drugs and semen for AI projects. Perhaps some extra feed and mineral to flush up those females for better pregnancy rates. Maybe replacement heifers are being developed off-site and artificially bred by a third party who sends you a ‘nice’ invoice every month. Add in the cost of time and extra labor, and the total investment in the breeding season becomes substantial. We may occasionally wonder if it’s all worth it. However, without large numbers of pregnancies, there is no tomorrow in the cow business. With today’s market prices and costs, a 5percentage-point improvement in reproduction rates returns approximately $50 per cow across the entire herd. Not bad. Getting five more cows bred in a herd of 100 females adds roughly $5,000 to the bottom line, which is enough to warrant some extra work and expense, assuming that is what it takes to ratchet your pregnancy rates up a notch or two. Keep in mind that both genetics and management play an active role in reproduction. Ryan Boldt, RAAA director of breed improvement, recently analyzed large volumes of Red Angus data and quantified the difference in

12 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2020

‘average number of calves per productive lifetime’ for high and low Stayability EPD females. Cows in the top quartile of the breed for Stayability weaned one additional calf per lifetime compared to those in the bottom quartile for this important trait. We also know that easier fleshing cows tend to breed back better, and fleshing ability is influenced by genetics and often correlated to frame size. Not Just Any Pregnancy Will Do Ideally, your genetics and management are working together to produce high-pregnancy rates year after year. If that’s the case, it could be time to move your sights up to a higher level and focus on creating highvalue pregnancies. No one gets excited about a mediocre cow bred to a mediocre bull that is destined to calve late in the calving season. Such a cow ticks up the herd percentage for females bred versus females exposed, but that is pretty much all she does. Likewise, a heifer who ends up bred to a non-calving-ease bull and is therefore likely to result in a difficult birth also qualifies as a less-desirable pregnancy. Creating valuable pregnancies can be grouped into two general categories: timing and genetics. And again, achieving both are worth some extra effort.

Association Commentary Timing Pregnancies that result from conceptions occurring early in the breeding season are worth more. Early-born calves weigh more at weaning (typically 2.2 to 2.5 pounds per day more), and early-born heifers tend to make more desirable replacements. Females that calve early have more time to resume cycling and re-breed for their next calf, which is particularly important with younger cows. South Dakota State University research on a group of 2,195 producer-owned females found that early-calving heifers remained in the herd 5.1 years, on average, compared with only 3.9 years for heifers that calved after the first 21 days of the calving season. Genetics Creating valuable pregnancies by using the best genetics possible is also critical. Those who invest more in their herd bulls and who utilize AI

the best ever produced on this place and I can’t wait to see them.” Genetic progress and enthusiasm usually go hand in hand. The takeaway message here is simple: Creating high-pregnancy rates is both good and necessary. But creating high-value pregnancies along with high-pregnancy rates is even better. ■

to access superior genetics are rewarded in the form of more productive cows and more marketable steers. One good gauge of whether genetically valuable pregnancies are being created is the level of excitement you feel when thinking about that next calf crop. There is a big difference between, “Well, he’s not the best bull, but he got my cows settled,” and “Next year’s calves will be

Marketing Update by Nolan Woodruff, Commercial Marketing Specialist

Plan Ahead for Long-Term Cowherd Success As we head into spring, the busy season for all things cattle related – calving, bull sales, branding and getting ready to breed – it is important to make sure each operation is doing all they can do to make the most-profitable decisions for the long-term success of the ranch.

available. If possible, it is significant to include data when making selection decisions to improve genetic progress more quickly.

As spring calves are growing and each producer is making decisions on which females to retain, it is important to keep a few things in mind. One of which is the importance of why you are spending time analyzing which heifers to keep. Cows are what keep the ranch running. The longer she is in the herd and the better product (calves) she produces, the more value she has. Red Angus breeders have focused on making females that are all-around good cows for over 60 years. Being recognized as the industry’s “most-favored female” is evidence that cattlemen and cattlewomen are doing things right in relation to female selection. The high-quality females that Red Angus has focused on producing has led to great advancements within the breed and overall improvement of the calf crop.

For seedstock producers, EPD data is a part of the decision and in the plan, but for commercial cattlemen and cattlewomen, data isn’t always available. However, data can be accessible to the commercial operation through the Red Angus Association of America’s Red Navigator genetic panel. Many producers have been able to look further into the genomics of their heifers in order to make their selection decisions. The Red Navigator genetic panel is for females that are 75% or greater Red Angus and it returns a full suite of EPDs and indices for commercial females. The results are compared to over 8,000 head that are in the commercial database and returned to producers as a percentile ranking. Utilizing this genetic panel can improve the genetics of the female at a much faster rate the phenotypic selections alone.

Another important consideration is the structural integrity of females that are in the keep pen. My collegiate livestock judging coach was adamant that the structure of an animal is built from the ground up. Feet are the foundation for each and every animal and without good feet, the animal has no place within the herd. Scoring feet as a part of selection decisions is a great way to get ahead on today’s industry-wide foot problem. In addition to feet, it is important to pay attention to udder and teat structure as well as data if

While it is important to keep structural integrity and quality genetics in mind, it is also important to have profit at the top of your selection decisions. Red Angus females have been topping the market at many sales throughout the year and eight years’ worth of data collected from Superior Livestock Auctions, analyzed by Kansas State University, says that Red Angus females tagged with the FCCP yellow tag bring $5 more per hundredweight compared to Red Angus heifers that are not tagged. There are no enrollment fees, and the tag is only 99 cents. If you order early, you can use this as your management tag and then garner premiums when you take females to the sale. Although many operations are already working hard to select quality replacements, and doing the best they can to make top dollar on sale day, I encourage everyone to take a moment out of this busy season and see if there are other opportunities to aid in the decisionmaking process to be confident that you are making the best decision for your operation. ■

Members who have questions or want to submit data should now use the new email: data@redangus.org. This email has replaced all the various emails that were previously used for data submissions such as web.rrts@redangus.org, etc. This email is used by all in the Red Angus office, so please use this address for all your needs. We will get it directly to the right person for response and completion. Final Step of Sale Season: Transfer of Animals Bull sale season is coming to a close, therefore keep in mind that transfers need to be completed within 60 days after the sale date to avoid a late transfer fee. To help make all documents as correct as possible, please double check the buyer information to be submitted. This includes correct spelling of name(s), address, contact number, etc. If information is not correct this can cause duplicate and/or incorrect accounts for buyers. The buyer account number is very beneficial to the buyer to ensure that their inventory is complete, so that the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program and Allied Access tagging program can be used to the fullest. If buyers have bought Red Angus previously, feel free to contact the National Office for the buyer account number to help with this process. TIME TO REPORT: Fall 2019 Birth & Weaning Data Please report data on each dam listed in your fall inventory including dead calves, a reason code for missed calv-

ing opportunities and/or moving a dam to the next calving season. To-Do Check List: • Report data after you wean calves and make certain each calf application is completed correctly. Please reference the Instruction Key at RedAngus.org/herdmanagement/for ms/. • For each dam listed, indicate one of the three THR requirements for each dam – Calf record through weaning, reason code for no calf or disposal code for dam. • In order to register a calf, you have to be the owner of the dam at the time of calving. If a dam is missing from the list, please add the dam’s registration number and calf data. • The recommended due date is May 13, 2020. If you have not yet weaned your calf crop by this date, you can submit your records once weaning data is taken. • If a calf record or reason code for no calf is not reported for the 2019 calendar year, she will be subject to inactivation on Oct. 28, 2020. Freshen up on all DNA requirements before the purchase and use of bulls or flushing and placement of embryos of donor females. Many of the DNA requirements are overlooked or misunderstood about what needs to be accomplished so that offspring can meet a full registered status (R or I). Until an animal has met all requirements, RAAA cannot print a registration certificate, the animal cannot be transferred, or future offspring of the animal cannot be registered. The main reason these rules are overlooked is because it is required on the parents and not the calf itself. This would be a different case however if the resulting calf’s parent(s) is a carrier of a genetic defect. The onset of the IGS-BOLT evaluation, paired with the submission of phenotypic records, has led to a new era in genetic evaluation for the cattle industry. In an effort to collect necessary female genotype and phenotype information to improve genetic predictions, the Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors has approved the Red Cow Rally. The Rally research collaboration between RAAA and Neogen is designed to increase phenotypic data collection and submission for mature weights, body condition scores and genotypes on Red Angus females. A limited number of research genotypes (GGP-LD) and rebate funds will be available for the project, so discounts and rebates will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

HOW IT WORKS:

RULES AND RESTRICTIONS:

• Participants that submit both mature weights and body condition scores electronically on 90%+ of current active cow inventory will receive an additional, one-time $5 rebate per head.

2. DNA samples must be submitted via Allflex Tissue Sampling Unit or blood card on the electronic Red Cow Rally order form. TSU orders larger than 50 must be submitted in 96-well trays.

• Members will receive a research price of $20 for genomic tests in order to DNA test 90%+ of their current active cow inventory. An additional $5 rebate will be available for females tested that are 6+ years of age.

TO ENROLL: Fallon Flick,

DNA programs coordinator (940) 477-4589 fallon@redangus.org

1. All members must first enroll by signing a contract of understanding of the program requirements to participate. Research prices and rebates are only available to Red Cow Rally participants.

3. Payment for DNA testing must be made in full at the time of sample submission. 4. Rebates will be issued as a credit to the member account once additional data requirements have been met and verified. 5. Weight and BCS measurements are required to be taken at the time of weaning a calf during the duration of the project.

JRA Update

Education, Reproduction and Participation by Shaye Koester, JRA President

How does JRA explain the importance of reproductively sound females to our members? Our program incorporates teaching juniors about beef cattle reproduction at almost all events as well as offers hands-on opportunities. This education covers many topics and areas of reproduction from fetal sizing, the different methods of checking for pregnancy, the importance of reproduction from a financial standpoint and much more. We also have opportunities for juniors to take initiative and expand their own knowledge in this area through scholarship programs. When it comes to the hands-on education aspect of what we do, there have been numerous activities at our most recent events for juniors to expand their knowledge of beef cattle reproduction. Last summer at the annual Round-Up, juniors learned about the importance of reproduction and how it affects profitability of cattle herds.

Reproduction tracts were also available for juniors to investigate, observe the process of artificial insemination, and better understand where semen is deposited. A calf-pulling simulation was also present for attendees to practice pulling calves in different scenarios such as a backwards calf or a calf with a leg back. During the Young Stockman Program in December, juniors also participated in a reproduction segment that discussed the different breeding processes such as natural service, AI and embryo transfer. After a short, interactive presentation, attendees put on OB sleeves and took the opportunity to handle different reproduction tracts and practice pregnancy checking them.

28 American Red Angus Magazine n April 2020

This experience taught members how to age fetuses based on their respective sizes and check for abnormalities with the reproduction tracts themselves. These experiences are always favorites among our members and all attendees. We look forward to continuing this educational aspect to our program and events to share the importance of a reproductively sound female to the future of the RAAA membership. Do you want to continue your education on beef cattle reproduction on an individual basis through a local event? We can help you accomplish this! JRA has several industry scholarships available that will help cover the registration cost of these events. Members have used these scholarships to attend and complete AI school and gain their certification. These scholarships are also available for any event related to furthering growth in the beef industry. They are not reproduction specific. If this is of interest to you, check out the junior page at RedAngus.org for the application and further instructions. n

Smaller Straws Require New AI Equipment by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

Progressive cattlemen have long implemented synchronization and artificial insemination technology to more quickly advanced the genetics of their herd and tighten up calving intervals. AI’ing affords them the ability to choose from the best genetics in their breed, gain access to the industry’s changing bulls and for some, to breed to a genetic package at a more affordable rate. In addition, with the increases in synchronization efficiency, enhanced reproductive performance has promoted more use of AI in beef herds. While cases of artificial insemination date back as far as the 1700s when an Italian physiologist used the technology to garner a litter of puppies, cattlemen didn’t employ AI’ing until the 1930s. Dairymen were some of the first to AI to increase production of their herds and, in the 1950s, it caught on with beef producers as well. The earliest technology of AI in cattle had semen stored in a sealed glass ampule and kept cold in dry ice and thawed in an ice water bath. The cooled semen was fresh and would only last a couple of days. Administration was somewhat similar to what cattlemen use today, with the combination of semen and extender drawn into a plastic pipette and then administered to the cow. With the advancement of AI technology, the French straw was introduced as the best way to keep and store semen and has been used since.

grown accustomed over the past 70 years. According to Dave Whitlock, regional marketing manager for Premier Select Sires, the concept of changing over straw size has been long discussed in America. “This isn't a new debate. It has been discussed and researched for more than 40 years. The 0.25 ml (1/4 cc) straws have been around for a long time.”

American AI Technology to Transition to 1/4-cc Straw Size With the dawning of the new millennium comes the adoption of the 1/4cc straw size rather than the 1/2-cc straw to which American’s have

When the straws were first put to use, many of the technicians in Europe and Canada opted to use the 1/4-cc straws while those in American used the 1/2-cc straw. The cost of liquid nitrogen, used to keep semen

32 American Red Angus Magazine n April 2020

frozen in tanks, is cited for the usage of the smaller straws in other countries. The 1/4-cc straws are more efficiently stored than are the 1/2-cc straw. The Downside The change in straw size has benefits but there will also be a few drawbacks about which producers should be aware. In Whitlock’s opinion the 1/2-cc straws are more user friendly. “They are easier to handle, easier to read the straw information and less prone to breakage during handling.” He continued, “The 1/2-cc straws are less sensitive to temperature change.

Smaller Straws Require New AI Equipment This has been a debatable positive effect when thawing the semen but makes it more prone to semen handling error pertaining to ‘thermal shock’ in the field.” The Benefits Not only will the smaller straw size lend itself for a more universal implementation, it requires less from a storage aspect and lends itself to easier transportation. Sexed semen technology – having X- or Y-chromosome bearing sperm identified to produce desired female or male progeny – has dubbed the 1/4-cc straws their straw of choice further solidifying this straw size as industry standard in the U.S. Various recent studies have proven similar conception rates for either size straw. The 1/4-cc straw has the same amount of semen as the 1/2-cc straw although it requires less extender. New Equipment With the new straw size comes a few new items producers will need to keep on hand.

In their most recent brochure on the topic, Select Sires outlined the following: • A special AI gun designed to accommodate the smaller diameter 1/4-cc straws is required. • Sheaths used with 1/4-cc straws must contain the plastic inserts to ensure a proper seal with the end of the straw. • Tweezers designed for 1/4-cc straws fail to tightly grasp the 1/4-cc straws. Breeders can purchase tweezers and AI guns that are universal to accommodate both straw types. According to Premier Select Sires, universal AI guns that accommodate both straw types typically work fine when new. However, alignment problems between the straw and plunger often develop due to a bent plunger or perhaps some trash or a burr inside the barrel. AI guns specifically designed for 1/4-cc straws have fewer alignment problems than do universal AI guns. In general, AI guns specifically designed for 1/4cc straws will usually eliminate the need to seat the straw on the plunger and allow for loading procedures identical to those used for 1/2-cc straws. Overall, the change in AI straw size shouldn’t cause much variation in processes for commercial operations choosing to use artificial insemination. As with all change, this is a good time for those producers to take an inventory on the equipment they have, determine the new equipment they may need to purchase and begin to arrange for another successful breeding season. n

X or Y? Prophesize Your Future with Sexed Semen by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

Sexed semen – the process of identifying semen having X- or Y-bearing chromosomes to produce either female or male progeny – continues to grow in popularity in the beef industry. While the primary application might be in registered herds, sexed semen can also play a role in commercial cow-calf operations. The practice lends itself to a unique profitability for the cattleman seeking to grow his female replacement herd or for the terminally focused producer seeking a larger crop of male calves in order to send more steers to the rail.

With 5% of beef cattle being artificially inseminated and 80-90% of dairy cattle being bred this way, the usage of sexed semen has long been more standard in the dairy industry than in the beef sector. The growth of technology and the collection of more notable herdsires makes sexing semen a more viable option now than it has ever been.

Operations Benefiting from Sexed Semen According to Hergenreder, some operations or situations are a better fit for breeding with sexed semen. “First and foremost, a commercial operation that is in an expansion phase can benefit from AI’ing with sexed semen,” he said.

Justin Hergenreder, GENEX director of beef sales, said that most cattle raisers have heard of sexing semen. “The use

X or Y? Prophesize Your Future with Sexed Semen “If you have a set of cows that you’re pretty proud of and you’d like to increase from 100 to 200 head, do yourself a favor and make those replacements by using female-sexed semen instead of just hoping that you get some heifer calves. So, if you’re in expansion mode, sexed semen for females is a good option.” Hergenreder continued, “On the opposite end of that spectrum is a terminal outfit. Everybody knows the price difference between a steer and a heifer, and if you can guarantee yourself more male calves, that’s some added profit in your pocket on sale day.” Whether the target on the wall is topgrade terminal genetics or to have firstclass maternal traits, sexed semen offers a way to optimize efficiency in expanding those numbers for the goal at hand.

Implementation For producers who have grown accustomed to AI’ing, the process of implementing a sexed semen program isn’t much different. It’s important to note that sexed semen comes in 1/4-cc straws rather than 1/2-cc straws, so the

40 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2020

process requires a different AI gun. This shouldn’t cause too much of an inconvenience as the entire industry has begun to shift to 1/4-cc straws as the U.S. domestic beef industry is the last in the world still using the larger straw size.

X or Y? Prophesize Your Future with Sexed Semen Adjusting synchronization protocols lends itself to a better chance for success as well, according to Hergenreder. A synchronization protocol that uses a Select Synch with heat detection or a split timed-AI has proven to be more successful with sexed semen breed-up than a whole-herd timed AI. Hergenreder also assured, “If somebody is going to heat detect all of their cows, they should get along just fine.” With any advanced technology comes a higher price point. The process of sorting semen requires additional man hours and technology. This expense is shared with the cattleman looking to purchase straws of sexed semen which usually run as much as 50% higher than conventional straws of semen. The question beef producers must ask themselves is if the genetic investment is worth the cost.

There are three primary ways producers obtain sexed semen: 1. From commercial bull studs 2. By purchasing semen that’s been collected and sorted from another producer’s bull, usually seedstock 3. By collecting from one’s own bull and having the semen sexed According to Hergenreder the majority of sexed semen in tanks today belongs to high-profile seedstock bulls who’ve developed enough of a reputation for the sexed semen to attract buyers seeking an added genetic package be it pounds or maternal traits. Conception Rates When using sexed semen, you should expect a conception rate that is 1015% less than what you would normally experience with conventional semen. Properly identifying females

in heat and ensuring that they are good candidates for AI will help minimize the decrease. As with any effective breed-up, an appropriate body condition score is paramount. Having females ready for a successful breeding season with a BCS of 4-5 is vital to conception rates. Additionally, cows that are at least 45 days postpartum and heifers that have been previously cycling are more likely to breed up. At the end of the day, the commercial cattleman has to put pen to paper to determine if the added cost at the front end of calf development will pencil out in the long run. One thing is for certain; the cattle genetics industry is one of cutting-edge technology and continues to allow producers to advance their ability to make decisions with more clarity based on their desired outcomes. ■

Hot Summer Days are Proving ‘No Sweat’ for Red-Hided Cattle by Nolan Woodruff, RAAA Commercial Marketing Specialist, and Jeananne Mosher, RAAA REDSPro and Show Programs Specialist

Cattlemen and cattlewomen using Red Angus genetics have long applauded the benefits of the breed – outstanding females, heifers out-selling their steers mates, superior carcass quality and overall docility. The improved heat tolerance of red-hided cattle compared to black-hided cattle in the scorching days of summer is also a notable advantage regardless of climate and region.

Producers with mixed herds have noted that red cattle graze more consistently throughout the day as opposed to dark-hided cattle that graze during the cooler mornings and evenings, spending time in the shade or pond during the peak temps of the day. Visual observations carry a lot of weight, but Red Angus Association of America wanted metrics and scientific research to confirm the difference in temperature and other affects between red and black hides to back up the cowboy logic. To quantify the red-hide advantage, the RAAA imple-

46 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2020

mented a project to measure the exact difference in hide temperature during the heat of summer. Staff began the multi-year project in the summer of 2019 and currently have one year’s worth of data collected. The results are proving the hypothesis correct that red hides are indeed cooler than black hides. The first step of this project was to stretch a red hide and a black hide on identical boards to observe and record the difference in temperature solely based on color. RAAA staff then shipped these hides around the country to be laid out in the sun, collecting temperature measurements at various intervals during the day.

Hot Summer Days are Proving ‘No Sweat’ for Red-Hided Cattle

Start today with cow status in the palm of your hand.

After comparative temperatures were collected at six locations, the data showed an average 10.5-degree difference between the two hides, with the red hide being consistently cooler. For areas with high-temperature summers, Red Angus cattle perform phenomenally well, and this data shows one reason why. In the heat of the day, red-hided cattle are cooler and more comfortable, therefore more likely to stand out in the sun and continue grazing.

Detect estrus to improve conception rates in A.I. cows and heifers Monitor health and eating to catch early onset of sickness or stress Free up more time in your day

Feedlots have also indicated that hide color plays a role during the finishing stage. A previous study performed by RAAA looked at feed intake depending on temperature during the summer of 2017 in Nebraska. Red and black cattle with similar genetics were fed in adjacent pens during the hot weather months. The pen of Red Angus cattle consumed 8,250 pounds more feed during daytime hours compared to the black cattle. With the added energy required to keep cattle cool in the summer, feedlots see benefits to feeding Red Angus.

The second phase of the project – set for the summer of 2020 – will entail recording external surface temperature readings on live cattle to compare and confirm the relationship of the hide-on-board temperatures to live cattle. The final step of the hide-temperature project will be to collect internal temperatures on red- and blackhided females. These measurements will offer further insight to heat tolerance in red-hided cattle and how it might affect conception rates on hot summer days. ■

Member News In Memory James Madsen

James “Jim” Kenneth Madsen, 66, of Russell, Kansas, died on Jan. 31, 2020, at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kan.

Jim was born on Sept. 15, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Kenny and Louise (Rogers) Madsen. He grew up on the family farm in West Branch, Iowa, and attended high school there. Jim graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture business. He was united in marriage to Katrin Kolder, D.V.M., on Sept. 1, 1990, in West Branch, Iowa. They divorced in 2013 but continued to breed Red Angus cattle and raise their sons Steven and Josh together. The last five years were spent with his special friend, Lindi Clough. The family moved to Russell, Kansas, in 2010 and put together a grassland ranch northeast of town. Jim was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He loved the ranch, took pride in improving it and working with his sons. An avid football fan, he took great interest in history, geography, conservative politics and fighting for the independent cattle producer. The joys in his life were riding his horses with his dogs checking cows. Watching the moon rise or sun set from his yard brought him peace and fulfillment. Surviving family include Katrin and sons Josh and Steven of Russell, Kansas; brother Dick (Jenny) Miller of West Branch, Iowa; sister Patty (John) Earley of Naples, Florida; granddaughter Raelynn Madsen of Ridgecrest, California; and cousins Ronnie (Cynthia) Madsen of West Branch, Iowa, and Richard (June) Madsen of Coralville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Ralph F. Bocshler Ralph F. Bochsler, U.S. Marine, businessman, philanthropist, husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, passed away Feb. 6, 2020, at the age of 90. Ralph’s love and dedication to his wife of 69 years, Louise, shone through to the very end. They sat side-by-side as Ralph passed – surrounded by family, holding hands, and praying, just as they had all their years of marriage. Ralph was born at home on Jan. 10, 1930, in Mt. Angel, Oregon, to Albert and Hedwig (Wellman) Bochsler. Ralph grew up in Mt. Angel and graduated from Mt. Angel Prep. Ralph had a deep love for his country, a value he and Louise instilled in their family. He enlisted in the Marines in 1948 and served in the Korean War. While serving for Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 1st Division, he was wounded in battle, recovered in Japan and returned to the front lines. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and returned to the states to start his life with Louise. During this time, Ralph was employed by Lulay Brothers Lumber Co. in Scio. He and Louise bought a farm in Monitor, growing berries and raising cattle and horses. When the Catholic High School in Mt. Angel closed in 1968, Ralph and Louise picked up the family and moved to Stayton. In 1973, Ralph and Louise founded North Santiam Paving Co. and Ralph worked alongside his two brothers, Tom and Joe, and with his two sons. Ralph always stressed that the people at the company were its biggest asset and ensured that everyone was treated fairly and with respect. Ralph’s values

56 American Red Angus Magazine ■ April 2020

of hard work, quality craftsmanship, faith and family still drive the company today. Ralph’s top priorities in life were his faith, his wife Louise and their support of Catholic causes. They devoutly supported Regis St. Mary Catholic School, Mt. Angel Abbey and Immaculate Conception Parish. The great outdoors called on Ralph’s heart. Some of his fondest memories included elk and deer hunting trips across Oregon with his brothers, sons and friends. Later in life, he loved fishing, crabbing and boating with family. His love for the outdoors tied right into his passion for cowboying. Ralph and Louise founded North Santiam Red Angus, raising herds as large as 80 head of cattle and receiving many awards for their well-bred animals. While the size of the herd became smaller over the years, at 90 years old, Ralph was still raising cattle and owned two horses. He’d owned horses his whole life and as one of the founders of the Santiam Canyon Stampede, Ralph would help with the Stampede’s cattle drives through Stayton. Ralph is survived by his wife: Louise of Stayton; sons: Ron (Juli) Bochsler of Stayton and Gary (Maureen) Bochsler of Scio; daughters: Charlene (Larry) Foltz of Front Royal, Virginia, and Janet (Ted) Highberger of Stayton; sisters-in-law: Barbara Bochsler of Mt. Angel and Dorothy Bochsler of Sublimity; 20 grandchildren and 38 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Albert, Joe, John and Tom and sisters Adeline Hammelman and Sister Maryann. ■
