Board Commentary by Johnny Rogers, RAAA President
Looking for Certainties in an Uncertain World Reliability is a prized trait even in the best of times. Knowing what to expect has great value and allows us to effectively manage our businesses and personal lives. Farming and ranching are occupations filled with extreme complexities that can alter outcomes even with careful planning. 2020 has taken these uncertainties to a whole new level. Not only do we have the normal volatile factors like weather and markets, but we added a global pandemic and civil unrest to the equation. When the world seems to turn upside down and sideways every few days, finding something you can count on becomes even more important. Let me share with you a few things that are built to last and have a strong record of persistence in tough conditions. The foundation of the beef industry lies in harvesting forage often produced on marginal land by beef cows. These brood matrons capture the value created by careful stewardship of this grassland resource. They create value by converting plant material into calf crops – some of which will go back into the herd as replacements to continue the cycle. Of course, you all know the rest of the story as the balance of the calves spend most of their lives on pasture, range or crop residue before being finished in feedlots. Cows are the original “up cyclers” taking something that we cannot digest and creating a nutritious and great tasting protein source. Red Angus cows thrive in this system and they have become the most sought-after brood cow in the beef industry. Market research completed by Kansas State University has validated that Red Angus-sired females garner higher sale prices that other breed types. When talking to cattlemen about why they prefer these females, a common theme is expressed. Fertility, fleshing ability, longevity
and docility are some of the most mentioned attributes of the Red Angus cow. Of course, she brings performance and carcass traits along with her dynamic maternal package. This gives cattlemen a high degree of mating flexibility to fit various environments and markets. These great females were created by breeders following sound selection principles and using genetic tools developed under the Red Angus Association of America’s Total Herd Reporting program. THR has built consistency and accuracy into our genetic evaluation and allows our stakeholders to deliver the type of cattle needed to make our commercial customers profitable. Commercial cattlemen can rely on the RAAA to stay focused on their needs and deliver genetics and programs that creates value. The Feeder Calf Certification Program is a great example of how we use pull-through marketing to build demand for Red Angus genetics. This program sets new records for enrollment every year and our customers appreciate the value and simplicity. Contact your seedstock provider or a member of our marketing team to learn more about FCCP. RAAA continues to innovate, develop and execute a membership-driven Strategic Plan. Many will remember the old saying, “If you do not know where you are going, then any road with take you there.” RAAA believes in finding our preferred destination (goals and objectives) and then find the best path to achieve them. In some cases, we may have to build a road or bridge to arrive at our destination but through perseverance we will prevail. We will continue our relentless pursuit of innovations that improve beef industry profitability and sustainability. All industry stakeholders can rely on Red Angus genetics and programs to provide a future with more certainty in our uncertain times. ■

10 Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2020
Association Commentary by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer
Where Red Angus Fits in U.S. Beef Production Drawing on information from an RAAA producer survey conducted last fall, we can better understand how Red Angus breeders and their commercial bull customers view the breed’s role in U.S. beef production. Question 11 of the survey asked the following: What do you associate with Red Angus cattle for beef production? This multiple-choice question was about which groups of traits are thought to be most important and how cattle producers utilize Red Angus genetics to reach their desired goals. The summary of responses is ranked from highest to lowest frequency. • 56% Multi-purpose/Balanced Traits • 43% Maternal Traits • 1% Terminal Traits As mentioned, these responses came from both commercial and registered breeders, and the aggregate message they provide seems clear enough. Red Angus contributes to the success of the beef business by delivering a host of positive traits that benefit all industry segments (cow-calf, feedlot,
packer and consumer), while simultaneously maintaining strong emphasis on maternal characteristics. The dial below provides an illustration of what this looks like in practice. Red Angus is a balanced-trait breed that leans maternal. Terminal traits are not ignored. They are part of a balanced-trait package. But the breed’s maternal emphasis generally holds a higher position of importance. “Maternal-leaning, balanced traits” is what breeders and commercial cow-calf operators want and expect from Red Angus genetics. It therefore stands to reason that the better this expectation is fulfilled by every Red Angus bull and female produced, the more success our breeders and the breed itself will experience. As breeders align their programs with how the marketplace desires to use Red Angus, demand for Red Angus genetics is bound to increase. We should also acknowledge that Red Angus holds the title of “mostfavored female” in the industry because this promise of a truly maternal cow is being met way more often than not.

Association Commentary Most commercial ranchers are not breed loyalists in the sense that they choose and stay with a breed over the long haul only because it does what they need it to do.
would generally agree that this is where Red Angus fits in beef production and where the breed’s greatest success can be found.
There’s obviously room for variation from one breeding program to the next as to how the maternalleaning, balanced traits thought process is applied. Some may choose to lean more to the left or to the right on the dial. However, many breeders will decide to stay focused pretty much exactly where the arrow is pointing, maintaining, or better yet, improving their herd’s ability to contribute to industry demands as brought to light by the survey. RAAA members and commercial Red Angus producers
The table on the right shows how this balanced trait approach to improving Red Angus genetics has worked out during the past decade. By comparing the top 200 most-used sires in 2009 versus 2019, we observe that breeders are making progress in a host of traits. Working on so many traits at once can be an arduous process. However, Red Angus breeders consistently demonstrate their commitment to making improvements that help the breed contribute positively to all beef industry segments. ■

Marketing Update by Barrett Simon, Commercial Marketing Specialist
Summer Sales Close on High Note, Provide Optimism for Fall Run As we closed out the spring, the sentiment throughout most of the seedstock circles was that many involved were pleasantly surprised with the way that the market stabilized and remained steady for Red Angus herd sires amidst the uncertainty that was COVID-19. However, the commercial bull buyers who had made this the reality were left grasping for straws in the early summer markets. Marketing plans shifted, fed cattle were backlogged, and the calf market took a hit. Feelings of unrest and angst were common for all of us with a calf crop to sell and it looked as if the pandemic was catching up to the cow-calf producer with no promise of a subsidy to offset the delayed repercussions of the market fall. However, in roughly a two-week time span from late-June to early-July, we began catching traction. During this time frame, I had the opportunity to visit with Frank Wedel while I was in western Kansas for a few days. Admittedly, I never know exactly how someone with more experience is reading current events and will try to remain somewhat neutral. Frank reminded me that the demand for animal protein is high and that we have offered the world’s finest for quite some time. Almost a week later, we saw increasing numbers of cattle offered on the
videos, and producers were receiving prices on par, and better in many cases, with where they were a year ago. The cattle business is a competitive one and we all work to build profit margins, so while it may not be the bell-ringer prices we hope for, it does provide reasonable profits for producers with well-managed cowherds and moderate input costs. I sat down to write this article following the midand late-August sales. Surely the end of the video run provided the hottest markets of the summer as some producers saw their fall delivered calves command $30-80 per head more than they did at this time last year; a pleasant surprise for most. Momentum is building and cautious optimism is heard from sale barn managers across the country. One of such marketing agents is Brian Winter of Winter Livestock in Dodge City, Kansas. Brian urged producers in the Central and Southern Plains to consider grazing wheat pasture now more than ever. Though I won’t speculate where the March feeder board will sit at the time that this article is released, Brian showed a cash-to-cash profit margin of nearly $300 per head when light weight grazers were purchased and locked in for March delivery. Plenty of this kind of green-made steers and heifers will be available across the country as our FCCP sales kick off in the month of October. With several newly listed sales alongside of some of our longest running and most-productive sales, look to our listings this fall or contact any member of our team to consider one of these Special FCCP Sales to further capitalize on the value of your cowherd’s Red Angus influence.

Member Services Bulletin Nachos and Beer (Data and EPDs) By Halla Pfeiff, Director of Office Operations August is one of the heaviest months for requesting data from the RAAA. This may sound funny to you, but data entry is a lot like a plate of nachos. It is packed full of good stuff but takes some effort to make it come together and also to eat. Think about it this, way: The chips are your cows, the base. The meat is the sires which are bulkier and chosen wisely. The cheese is the weight data (birth and weaning). Toppings are the easy elements that almost every bite consists of that don’t require too much effort, like color, HPS, mating, etc.
Communications RAAA logos and the magazine were upgraded for brand cohesiveness. FCCP/Allied Access Programs Value-added programs reached a record high of 214,200 enrollments in 2019-2020 Accounting and Finance Net income exceeded 2019-2020 budget by a significant margin
Red Angus Shows The 2020 National Red Angus Show was the largest in history REDSPro Added an additional programmer to bring the IT team to three members for more efficient implementation DNA/Breed Improvement Launched Red Cow Rally, a female genotyping research program, with Neogen Membership Membership continued to grow reaching 2,755 RAAA members and 1,101 JRA members
24 Red Angus Magazine n October 2020
Thinking about the toppings is easy and a given when you dive into your meal. When reporting data, these should be the givens and the items that not much thinking needs to go into. Now the cheese (weight data) covers all of the chips and takes an effort to make sure each chip gets a decent amount on them, definitely a place you don’t want to skimp. The meat (sire) now carries half the weight even if it has to be shared with a few others. The chips (cows) are your base, always consistent, best served warm and can use a stack of goodies on top, even if a little salty. Now, some might argue that the best part is the beer (EPDs) that accompanies the nachos (data), and how your animal(s) genetically stack up. Some prefer an ice-cold Coors Light fresh from Colorado, while others fancy a Bud Light or a local IPA. However, it all depends on preference and determined goals for each individual operation. Overall, the most important factor is that the data is turned in well and in good combination to reap the full benefits - just like your plate of nachos is made with perfection and to not be taken lightly. Reminder to reference your data reporting timeline sent out to all members with their August 1 statement or access the online calendar at redangus.org/herdmanagement/thr-calendar/. Spring birth and weaning data has been requested to be submitted as soon as weaning weights have been taken. Also, now is the time to collect DNA samples on your calves. Contact the member services team if we can be of assistance through any of the process. n

eproductive efficiency is top of the list. Wean a healthy calf off range without extra feed or attention and do it every year. The calves produced must perform well in the feedyard and hang a carcass that brings you a PREMIUM. That kind of program takes YEARS to develop, and discipline to continually maintain and improve. When times are uncertain, you can’t afford to accept any less from your genetics supplier.

The Database Race by Jared Wareham, former Top Dollar Angus General Manager
Quietly, a frenzied dash has begun revealing itself in our industry. It will rival the intensity of the closing scenes of Talladega Nights as Ricky Bobby and Jean Girard sprinted earnestly toward the finish line as Pat Benatar belted out, “We Belong.” A truly epic finish. Whoever slaps their hand across that checkered line first, will be well positioned to drive innovation in virgin spaces along the beef value chain. We all understand the practical applications and financial benefits that can be derived from highly accurate databases and fine-tuned interpretive analytics. Precision food and feedstuff production systems are shining examples of how technology can help producers become better business operators. Big data has greatly benefited producers as they
Red American Cattle is a group of professional cattlemen combining passion, hard work, experience and knowledge based on EPDs. We strive to develop economically relevant traits in a registered Red Angus herd born and raised in Florida. While using the best quality bloodlines in the country, we offer Red Angus genetics that are adaptable to southern conditions and ready to improve profitability standards in your herd.
navigate business decision making, like weather impacts, government and resource use. It has helped keep tractors and equipment running straight and efficiently so farmers can profitably supply global grain markets. Opportunities for further integration of data-driven tools also exist in all segments of beef production. Just ask the feedlot manager trying to cost effectively grow NHTC (non-hormone treated cattle). Tools to reliably predict growth performance and reduce the probability of losses have a significant place when buying and feeding cattle without the benefits of implants. Comprehensive integration of such tools may still have hurdles to overcome. However, make no mistake, we are inching that direction more each year
due to a multitude of data accumulation and analytical efforts. Traditionally, the beef industry has been too fragmented and siloed to support across-the-board integration of ranch-to-consumer data flow. Further complicating the matter is the lack of robust, high-accuracy public datasets with universally accepted, predictive metric capabilities. The best data resources that do exist are designed mostly for seedstock and commercial ranch utilization (like IGS, for example). These designs are not flawed, but they’re more of an “initial wave,” or first generation of precision-production-improving metrics.

The Database Race Continued evolvement of these morelimited tools will be key to widespread cooperation between the segments. Therefore, the race is on to assemble and validate data tools that can deliver precision information and logistics management up and down each segment of the beef value chain. We should assume that, to some degree, there are very powerful data sets that already exist. However, these databases represent a shift away from what has been typical for our industry. They are privately held resources that constantly assimilate data in droves that will help drive business performance through precision metrics. Furthermore, they operate free from the usual complications characteristic of public databases. Overall, data quality and limitations to size and scope are sometimes challenged by narrowed visions
32 Red Angus Magazine n October 2020
and politics, which have created performance ceilings in most public data sets. They lack complete integrative capabilities to the entire industry, as a result. Moving forward, we will be able to place most databases in two buckets as the race unfolds. Those that have limited opportunities to improve or retool and, as a result, fear an oncoming wave of irrelevance. And secondly, those that truly “get” the industry and drive segment-to-segment cooperation by creating highly useful business metrics that create more value for all involved. Not only will the right kind of data help mitigate risk and empower enterprise management, it represents a proverbial gold mine to its gate keepers. Environments or systems that can facilitate supply chain profitability, like
transparent and accurate price discovery at the speed of commerce, will find plenty of opportunities to scale and profit. Those that can create opportunities to cultivate large fields of data and erect precision instruments connecting the ranch to the consumer with all necessary interfacing capabilities, could have one of the most powerful operating alignment systems our industry has ever seen. n

Heifer-Fertility Research Lays Groundwork for DNA Genetic Test by Heather Smith Thomas for the Red Angus Magazine
Fertility in cattle is the largest driver of profitability in the beef industry – no calf, no income. It’s expensive to develop heifers as replacement females. A heifer that is fertile, settles early in the breeding season and continues to raise a calf every year for a long life of productivity is profitable. A non-profitable heifer does not breed, breeds late or comes in open after her first calf. Her spot in the herd must then be replaced by another heifer that takes two years to develop. Producers utilize multiple ways to select heifers but determining future fertility has been elusive. Dr. Jared Decker, associate professor at the University of Missouri, is starting a research project to look at genetics of fertility and heifer puberty with a grant from USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. He is currently recruiting 2,500 Red Angus and 2,500 Hereford heifers for his research, and producers who participate will get free genomic-enhanced EPDs for their females. Fertility Indicator Traits The beef industry needs informative indicator traits for heifer fertility prediction, similar to calving ease and carcass traits. “Currently we don’t have any predictions of heifer puberty, and with the heifer pregnancy predictions that we do have, we don’t give any credit to the heifers that calve early in the breeding season,” Decker said. “We have indicator traits like birthweight for calving ease, and ultrasound data for carcass traits,” continued Decker. “Perhaps we can use reproductive tract scores, pelvic measurements and fetal age from ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis as indicator traits to more accurately predict heifer preg40 Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2020
One to two months before breeding, a veterinarian will examine each heifer, collect pelvic measurement and assign a reproductive tract score based on her puberty status.
nancy. Reproductive tract scores and pelvic measurements can also be used to predict the onset of puberty.” Settling a heifer early allows her more time to recover after calving, with more chance to rebreed. Jordan Thomas, University of Missouri state beef reproduction specialist, is also involved with this research. He said heifers that become pregnant in the first 21 days will stay in the herd over a year longer, on average, and wean more pounds of calf during their productive life span. “This is partly because she weans that additional calf and because she breeds early each year. Her calf is older and heavier at weaning,” explained Thomas. “With this research, we’re trying to develop precise ways of identifying heifers based on their genetic merits for reproductive traits. If I want heifers pregnant as early as possible in their
first breeding, they must reach puberty before the start of that breeding season. I could use protocols to help them, but even those protocols function best when most of the group has already attained puberty. We also need heifers with the fertility potential to conceive with as few of services as possible, so they become pregnant as early as possible,” he said. Current methods of trying to make genetic progress in reproductive performance are limited. “The heifer pregnancy EPD is calculated as a yes or no: did she become pregnant after she was exposed? That’s better than nothing, but not as good as we think we can do. We’re now collecting pre-breeding and pregnancy information on a large group of heifers to retrospectively determine which heifers are reaching puberty at younger ages, and which are conceiving early in the breeding season.
Heifer-Fertility Research Lays Groundwork for DNA Genetic Test
puberty and fertility in beef heifers and to create DNA tests. The project has four objectives. First, estimate the amount of variation in measured traits influenced by different genetic effects. “We will also measure the amount of variation due to genetics shared between traits which is genetic correlation,” said Decker. Second, identify DNA markers that influence puberty and fertility, utilizing extensive analyses of data from individual breeds. Third, combine all information across breeds, traits and data sets to identify gene networks, genes and variants that influence puberty and fertility.
Ninety days after the start of breeding season, a veterinarian will pregnancy ultrasound and measure fetal age to determine when the heifer was bred.
We are also collecting a DNA sample and will look at the genomic associations with those two pieces of the puzzle,” said Thomas. “The phenotypes we’re talking about in terms of fertility are not only valuable for genetic prediction, but also help us manage a group of heifers for best economic benefit,” Decker explained. “The puberty status of a group of heifers is important to know. “Some may be ready to go into an AI protocol. Others may not be quite ready to breed, so we could kick them out to pasture, give them more time to develop, and turn a bull out with them. Some may be too far behind with less chance of reaching puberty and breeding in time, so we can sell them as feeder heifers,” he said. Those would not make good replacements – coming up open or bred late – and can be sold 42 Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2020
while still young enough to get top dollar as feeder heifers. Having information on heifers could be helpful in selecting the best replacements and as a powerful management tool. Project Goals The goal of this research is to identify the genes and DNA markers regulating
Fourth, using knowledge learned in objectives 2 and 3, this study will contrast single-trait versus multiple-trait DNA predictions for puberty and fertility. The researchers expect this project will help them better understand which genes control differences in puberty and fertility and be able to create DNA tests and EPDs to help beef producers select more fertile heifers, increasing sustainability in the cow-calf industry. “The first part of the study, 30 to 60 days prior to the start of breeding season, is a pre-breeding exam” said Decker.

Heifer-Fertility Research Lays Groundwork for DNA Genetic Test “We collect pelvic measurements and give each heifer a reproductive tract score based on puberty status of the heifer. The veterinarian or technician palpates the reproductive tract, measures the size of the ovaries, determines whether there is a CL on the ovary, and checks the tone of the reproductive tract. Each heifer is given a score from 1 (very far from puberty) to 5 (already cycling). “Then, 90 days after the start of breeding season, a veterinarian will pregnancy ultrasound and measure fetal age. We’ll know whether or not the heifer was bred and the age of the fetus, which tells us when the heifer was bred. We can give extra credit to heifers that bred early in the season. Then, we’ll get the DNA test information to look at the genetics of these
44 Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2020
traits and work to create a genetic and genomic prediction of puberty and fertility traits,” he explained. The study will take four years. “Our goal is to collect all the phenotypic data in the first two, though the collection process may stretch into the third year. We want to get as many heifers as possible enrolled as quickly as possible so we can get data collected and start crunching numbers to come up with new tools for cattle producers.” Precision Agriculture It’s not as simple as turning the bull in and selecting heifers that get pregnant in a short breeding season, which is a good way to sort a group of heifers for fertility. “There is some cost in having the veterinarian come
twice – for the pre-breeding exam and the ultrasound pregnancy checks – but we feel this information will help us more accurately determine and describe the puberty and fertility genetics of our herd and help us do a better job of managing a group of heifers,” Decker explained. It will more than pay for itself in the long run; producers won’t have to keep extra heifers and expend money developing them, then sell those that fall out of production their first year or two and start over with new heifers. It works for some producers to keep a large group, develop and breed them, and then let nature sort them, but that method requires extra resources to retain more heifers. This DNA tool could finetune the process.

Heifer-Fertility Research Lays Groundwork for DNA Genetic Test “Precision agriculture is the future – we are trying to put more data into the process early to avoid headaches,” said Decker. “It won’t fit for everyone, but some producers will take advantage of new technology and genetic tools.” They are still actively recruiting for the project. Any producer can sign up a small or large group. “For a small group close to the university, Jordan Thomas’ reproductive biology group will collect the data. If it’s a small group that’s far away, they’ll need a trained veterinarian in their area to collect the data. If it’s a large group (80 or more heifers), we can send Jordan Thomas’ group to help collect the research data, for free,” said Decker. ■

Information has already been collected on Angus and SimAngus breeds, but the project is still actively seeking Red Angus and HereJordan Thomas ford producers to collaborate.
For heifers in a fall breeding program (breeding in November), the pre-breeding exam needs to be completed by mid-October. For heifers developing in the spring of 2021, there is plenty of time to get them enrolled. Participants will be accepted into the program for the next two years until 5,000 heifers are enrolled. For more information or to inquire about enrolling heifers, contact Jared Decker, cell 573-819-0837, office 573-882-2504, DeckerJE@missouri.edu, or Jordan Thomas, cell 573-289-9592, office 573-882-1804, ThomasJor@missouri.edu ■

A Tool to Build a Better Commercial Herd by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement
It is no secret that Red Angus are the industry’s most-favored female. Many commercial producers use Red Angus in their herds to produce problem-free females that improve the profitability. To continue this success, the RAAA has decided to revamp the HerdBuilder index to be a maternally focused index that covers traits from conception to weaning. While the previous HerdBuilder index did contain some post-weaning traits in the calculation, the updated HerdBuilder will not include those traits. Currently the RAAA calculates multiple EPDs that cover the conception-through-weaning phase of commercial cattle production. These EPDs include Calving Ease Direct, Weaning Weight, Calving Ease Maternal, 54 Red Angus Magazine ■October 2020
Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability. All of these traits will be included in the updated HerdBuilder index. Each trait in the resulting index will be weighted according to the profitability it contributes to an operation from conception to weaning. It is important to recognize that this updated index does not include any of the post-weaning traits. So, selection using this index will not be the most effective method to make progress in those traits. When building models for the economic selection index, it is important to gather pricing information on different revenues and costs. Like the GridMaster index, five-year-rolling averages for prices will be used as inputs for the economic model.

A Tool to Build a Better Commercial Herd Some examples of prices that are important for calculation of the HerdBuilder index include prices for weaned calves, replacement heifer value, calving assistance costs, feed costs and cull cow values. Within the updated HerdBuilder index, some of the more influential prices for determining the index are included in the table.

A Tool to Build a Better Commercial Herd As you can see, the biggest drivers of the resulting HerdBuilder index values are STAY, HPG, MW and CEM. For most of the traits in the index, the weighting seeks to push those traits in a positive direction. The exception to this is the coefficient that is placed on Mature Weight. This index is designed to reduce mature weight while holding Weaning Weight relatively constant. Another way to examine these indexes is to look at what is known as a “response to selection” graph. This graph provides an estimate of the change in genetic merit within a herd that makes selection decisions for all traits, assuming they solely selected on the updated HerdBuilder index.
It is not a breed… it is a type… a kind of female that makes the right kind of cow. Selling females from herds with maternally focused genetics, that are range raised, and developed to make long lasting, functional range cows.

The resulting graph shows what the expected change in EPD values would be if selection was performed purely on the new, maternally focused HerdBuilder Index. The graph shows that by selecting on this index, improvements would be made for Calving Ease, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability. The results of the index do target reducing mature weight, and due to the high relationship between mature weight and other growth traits (WW, YW, ADG, CW), we do generally expect to see a slight reduction in the resulting EPD values following selection using this index. Although not many producers will identify that they want to reduce weights at younger ages, the goal of the index is to try and minimize the costs, limit mature cow size and promote improvements in fertility. ■

Bieber’s Memory Lives on Through his Red Angus Legacy
you put them all in the same room you would have a heck of a tussle,” referring to their passion and deep conviction of the breed.
The Red Angus breed said good-bye to a leader and legend this summer. Ron Bieber of Leola, South Dakota, completed his service on earth on Aug. 7, but his dedication, commitment and legacy in the Red Angus breed is woven into the breed’s history forever.
Bieber, known as a business-minded influencer of the breed, served on the Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors from 1977-82, serving as the second vice president. During his tenure on the Board, they had to fund the new headquarters in Denton, Texas. Bieber was one of the initial members of the Founders Club who donated $10,000 to the cause. In 1994, Ron and his wife Lois received the Pioneer Breeder of the Year Award and, in 2003, the family was honored as Breeder of the Year. He and Lois were named as one of Red Angus’ 50 Most Influential People in 2004.
Seth Leachman of Touchet, Washington, learned about the breed’s association work at a young age when his father Jim Leachman and Bieber served on the RAAA Board of Directors together.
stocking rates were appropriate, our families spent a rare afternoon at the lake boating and skiing. I will forever cherish the memory of how our families came together because of the cattle but became lifelong friends because of their values.”
Butch Schuler of Bridgeport, Nebraska, knew Bieber not only as a fellow Red Angus breeder, but as a family friend. “Ron was passionate about many things including the land, cattle and family. He was an excellent steward of the land and realized it was the backbone of every successful ranching operation. Our conversations inspired me to monitor the range health as much as the cattle’s.”
Dr. Bob Hough, former breed executive, recalled the era of Red Angus development and the early boards when Bieber served. “The generation that built the breed was comprised primarily of large breeders – very bright, objectively oriented, eccentric and fiercely independent. The mere fact that they were raising Red Angus was an indication that they were willing to row upstream. Ron typified this group of breed builders with all their genius and unconventional outlooks and methods.”
Schuler recalled a visit from the Bieber family to their ranch in the late-70s. “After Ron inspected the herd and was satisfied that the

“As a young boy, I was intimidated by Ron, because his confidence was so strong and he had zero inhibitions about expressing his opinions and feelings,” said Leachman. “Later as I was a young man travelling the country managing sales and visiting operations like Bieber Red Angus, I came to appreciate Ron and his knowledge of good Red Angus cattle and the land.” “One of the memories I recall is when Ron raised Bieber Abe Lincoln, and had him at the National Western Stock Show,” said Leachman. “He was a very powerful growth bull, but not a show bull. He in turn sired Bieber Honest Abe, a bull that Leachman Cattle Co. purchased and had great success with during the mid-80s.” “Ron was a true pioneer breeder of Red Angus cattle,” concluded Schuler. “He embraced the breed in its infancy, when Red Angus cattle were more a novelty or a fad. His conviction for breeding cattle with measurable performance and fitness to their environment helped propel the Red Angus breed into one of dominance and respect by the entire beef cattle industry.” ■

JRA President’s Welcome by Andrea Rutledge, JRA President Hello! I’m excited to serve my second year on the JRA Board. Entering my third year of college, it’s humbling to look back on my experiences and connections all because of this breed. It is such an incredible opportunity to be a part of this amazing organization – especially when they value their junior association as much as Red Angus does. As a board, we didn’t start our year how we expected, but we have worked to make the most of it. I have a passion for Red Angus and leadership, and it is fueled by working with the incredible leaders of the JRA Board. I look forward to each of our upcoming events and crossing paths with RAAA and JRA members throughout the year. Be sure to stop and say, “Hi!” when you see a JRA director! Get Ready for a Great Year It is hard to believe that we are on the downhill slide of 2020 and quickly nearing the bottom of the hill. Time flies when you are having fun, but the 2020 fun looked a little different. Round-Up was held virtually and spread over the course of a few weeks, but we held all of our competitions, a team contest event and our annual meeting. We were thrilled with a successful turnout. If you haven’t already, like and follow our social media pages to keep up to date and interact with JRA members. Beef Industry Education Scholarship We want our juniors to take advantage of every available opportunity, including JRA’s Beef Industry Education Scholarship Program. This scholarship provides financial support for members to participate in industry activities and events that will impact the member’s success. Scholarship applicants are accepted each quarter for review and scholarships of up to $200 are awarded to support the member’s registration 64 Red Angus Magazine ■ October 2020
and participation. View the Scholarship section at RedAngus.org/junior-redangus/programs-events/ for more information. Young Stockman Program, Virtual December 4-5 In light of a recent announcement, we will no longer be at the University of Missouri for the Young Stockman Program. However, we will continue with an alternative virtual event. Please watch our social media properties for details as well as the JRA Update in the November Red Angus Magazine. Invest in the Future The pandemic may have forced the JRA board to adjust the delivery of educational programs, however, it continues to capitalize on the possibilities of virtual connections and plan for in-person events this coming year. With a mission of equipping and preparing all JRA stakeholders to be leaders, innovators, stewards and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry and agriculture, the board seeks partnerships to support their efforts. Invest in the future through your involvement in one of our fundraising efforts. For more information, contact Kim Heller at juniors@redangus.org, 515-851-2019. jects. Ron had a passion for improving pastureland which led to him and Lois to receive the Excellence in Grazing Award in 1985. Ron’s passion for Red Angus led him to serve on the Red Angus Association of America Board for a number of years where he also served as Second Vice President. In 1994, he and Lois were named Red Angus Pioneer Breeder of the Year and in 2003, they were named Breeder of the Year. In 2014, they were both honored as one of 50 Most Influential Breeders in the history of the Red Angus breed. Ron also served on the South Dakota Beef Improvement Association and the South Dakota Beef Industry Council. His passion for knowledge about human nutrition led him to serve on the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Nutrition research committee.
Ron enjoyed history and history discussions. He loved nature walks and the peaceful time. Cattle was obviously his passion and he looked forward to Red Angus events, cattle sales and simply being at the sale barns. Ron loved his family and spending time with them was important. He always seemed to get into mischief with his grandkids.
