Board Commentary
by Steve Koester, Area 5 Director – Northern Plains
The Most Important Pen Welcome to the Bull Buyer’s Edition! I hope all are healthy and happy on your ranch.
each and every one of you to look at your balance sheet once a bottom percentage is removed.
As I thought about what to write, I walked by the most important pen on our ranch – the CULL PEN!
Yes, there will be less dollars produced but at what cost? What does removing a percentage do for your grass and hay supplies? Does removing a percentage free up more time? Does increasing the quality of your product result in more dollars? Would removing a percentage create more acceptance through the industry supply chain by creating a more uniform product? What does removing a percentage do for the efficiencies of your base herd?
As seedstock suppliers, we have tons of tools to make genetic progress to help drive this industry to new levels, however the simplest and probably the most important is right in front of us.
“Good reputations are hard to come by and very easily lost.”
Phenotypic measurements, EPDs, ultrasound, genomically enhanced predictions and the plethora of other measurements we take – which are all very crucial to produce the highest quality seedstock for the commercial industry – are all in vain if the animal is not structurally correct, has a bad attitude or is marginal from a reproductive standpoint. For some reason, culling cattle has earned a negative connotation and that thought process needs to change. Removing subpar cattle is crucial to every operation whether that operation is seedstock or commercial. The profitability of any farm or ranch is dependent on removing the animals that are not generating a profit and, more importantly, not advancing your program or your customers’ operations genetically and financially.
For a large portion of producers in the U.S., now is a good time to evaluate those cowherds and bull batteries and trim the bottom off. I would ask RED ANGUS Magazine n January 2021
Those are all questions, along with many more, that we must find the answers to if we are going to be profitable and help take the Red Angus population and the beef industry to new levels. This article could be taken as a call to action to slice and dice the Red Angus population and that is not the intent. The intent is to create awareness for a more profitable, uniform product for all segments of our industry. Birth to consumption is not a novel concept – it is REAL. Red Angus has earned a well-deserved reputation in the beef industry and we must all do our part to sustain that reputation. Good reputations are hard to come by and very easily lost. I hope all of you had a blessed holiday season with family, friends and your Creator. May your hay supply never run out. n

Association Commentary
by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer
New ProS Index Will Move Your Herd in a Positive Direction RAAA recently released its new ProS index which is the best selection tool available for making multi-trait improvement when utilizing Red Angus genetics. Using ProS – which stands for “Profitability and Sustainability” – is simple. Higher values are associated with better maternal, terminal and overall efficiency traits. Therefore, when commercial producers select higher ProS values in the bulls they purchase, they can be confident a host of economically important traits will be moving in a positive direction, adding significant genetic value to their cowherds. Perhaps the best way to illustrate this point is through an example in which high- and low-ProS animals are compared using their average EPD profiles. The table presents average indexes and EPDs for top and bottom ProS sires that were taken from the 100 most-used Red Angus sires in the past decade. The top 30 sires in this group have an average ProS index of 158 (top 9% of the breed), while the bottom 30 sires averaged 74 for ProS (bottom 11%). When these two groups are compared, the high and low ends of the Red Angus bell curve are essentially being evaluated. This gives us a clear picture of the EPD differences which are influential in determining whether ProS winds up ranking at a high level, a low level or somewhere in between within the Red Angus population.
As we study the EPD profiles of the Receptionist two sire groups, the first notable Olivia Lee receptionist@redangus.org difference is that the high-ProS sires 10 RED ANGUS Magazine n January 2021
have the edge in calving ease and birth weight, yet they deliver more growth from weaning through carcass. Higher WW, ADG, YW and CW EPDs are all associated with higher ProS sires, and while they also exhibit modestly higher DMI EPDs, their overall growth efficiency is superior to that of the low ProS sire group. Shifting to maternal traits, significantly higher CEM, HP and STAY EPDs are found among the high-ProS Red Angus sires versus the low-ProS group. Females that readily breed up as yearling heifers, calve easily with their first calves and then breed back

BOTH ARE DESTINED TO MAKE THEIR MARKS, NOW IT’S YOUR MOVE!
Association Commentary – New ProS Index Will Move Your Herd in a Positive Direction again and again and remain in the herd for many years are indeed more valuable and more efficient in regard to resource use. That is exactly what the high-ProS sires deliver via their daughters when compared to daughters of the low-ProS bulls. Worth mentioning as well on the maternal side is that daughters of the high-ProS sires milk modestly more (4 pound higher MILK EPD) and use a bit more feed (4 Mcal-per-month difference in ME EPD), all while performing better from both a short- and long-term fertility standpoint.
a top 37% ranking in maternal traits, as captured by the HerdBuilder index.
On the whole, the 30 high-ProS sires
This sire comparison reveals that a higher ProS ranking must be “earned” by a combination of strong traits and favorable EPDs. The high-ProS sires profiled well across a host of calving ease, growth, maternal and carcass traits, and doing so pushed them up near the top of the breed for overall genetic merit.
“When commercial producers select higher ProS values in the bulls they purchase, they can be confident a host of economically important traits will be moving in a positive direction, adding significant genetic value to their cowherds.”
The final observable difference is found in carcass traits. Higher ProS sires deliver more in marbling (higher MARB EPD) and ribeye area (higher REA EPD), while not nec-

essarily being genetically leaner (a slight advantage in FAT EPD goes to the lower ProS sires, on average).
evaluated here rank in the top 13% for the terminal-trait-focused GridMaster index, while also maintaining
RED ANGUS Magazine n January 2021
Commercial breeders will still want to evaluate individual EPDs on the bulls they are considering for purchase. However, they will also do well to seek relatively high-ProS index values as a means of catapulting their herds in a positive genetic direction for many important traits at once. n
Marketing Update
by Harold Bertz, Director of Commercial Marketing
The Bull Search I recently spent some time helping my son shop for a new (to him) pickup. Not having any prejudices on brand, we began looking at specifications, payload, engine torque, fuel economy, etc. Once we decided on a brand, we began sorting our options on price and found several likely candidates in our general area. After visiting several “big city” dealerships we landed in a smaller, locally owned dealership where we felt comfortable and the salesman seemed genuinely interested in helping August find the best deal. This experience reminded me of the parallels commercial cattlemen go through in selecting their herd sires. This important process includes checking out EPDs, pedigrees, videos, physical confirmation, etc. Once the parameters are set, we are able to begin sifting through the mountains of catalogs to find bulls that meet them. The most important selection criteria, however, just might be finding the seedstock provider that makes them feel comfortable and interested in helping them improve their herds. Just as August and I were confident in our dealer choice, commercial cattlemen should be confident in the choice of their seedstock provider. This month’s issue is devoted to kicking off the 2021 bull sale season. It is an exciting time that has a huge impact on the herds of commercial cattlemen and women for years
16
RED ANGUS Magazine n January 2021
into the future. The commercial marketing team has been collecting data from the sales we attend since 2017. This data gives us indications of which traits cattlemen and women are placing their emphasis on as evidenced by the dollars they spend. During the 2020 season, we saw more emphasis placed on growth and carcass traits than in previous years, but the overlying theme through the four-year comparison is the emphasis on balanced-trait selection. The choice to use a balanced approach makes perfect sense. No breed does everything, but Red Angus sure gets close. The genetic diversity of the breed allows producers to put pressure on certain traits without sacrificing something else. Couple this with a managed crossbreeding system and producers can absolutely move the needle toward consistent profitability. Since we began collecting the data, consistent buying pressure has been placed on the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indexes. It is important to note that these indexes have changed somewhat and a new Profitability and Sustainability index, ProS, has been added Ryan Boldt, director of breed improvement, has written several outstanding articles in previous issues explaining how these indexes have changed, how they are calculated and how to successfully implement them into your selec-
Marketing Update – The Bull Search tion process. I recommend researching these outstanding tools to assist in making the best decisions possible when selecting additions to the herd bull battery. The seedstock provider you choose, just like the dealer we chose when truck shopping, can be an invaluable resource in explaining how these indexes relate to their herd and specifically the bulls you are considering. They can also explain some of the service-after-the-sale attributes they provide.
The marketing team looks forward to visiting with you as we travel to bull sales this spring. It is always a pleasure to see old friends and meet new ones as we examine bulls and enjoy the wonderful hospitality extended by Red Angus producers across the U.S. I hope your bull search brings you the same success that August and my truck search did, a quality product at a fair price from people we trust. n
I hope they mention the Feeder Calf Certification Program and the Allied Access program as marketing options. These programs have been well documented to add value and validity to a calf crop. Research at Kansas State University of Superior Livestock Auction sales clearly states Red Angus-sired calves enrolled in FCCP garner a $2.98/ cwt premium over Red Angus sired calves not enrolled in the program. Enrollment is free with dangle tag and EID options available.

Like a fine wine! A tremendously deep-bodied, masculine, good-looking bull, Malbec offers a completely Canadian pedigree and low birth weight. Malbec was a standout at U2 Ranch in Alberta exhibiting outstanding Angus character, dark red color and skeletal soundness all the way to the ground.
New Decade is an attractive, well-balanced bull with abundant capacity and thickness. His deep red color and easy-going temperament are an added bonus. His dam earned her way into the donor program at Crumps by exhibiting excellent feet and legs, udder quality and an outstanding ability to raise the good ones. A maternal brother was a highlight of their 2017 sale going to another seedstock herd.

RREDS BLUE PRINT H001 #4287851
GLACIER CHATEAU 744 x RREDS SENECA 731C
Blue Print is without question the most universal herd sire we have produced. He ratios 87 BW and 107 WW and is in a contemporary of all of the natural-born calves born this year. He is a true breeding piece and his name fits him well. Balanced in every way, moderate birth, with muscle and breed character. We think this bull has the opportunity to truly impact the breed positively for years to come.

The first son of our herd bull Heatwave to sell. This bull has great breed character and is from one of the best mother cows we have on the place. He is an outcross bull that has the ability to go out and make an impact in any cowherd.
A Seneca son with a little more frame. The dam to this calf is a maternal sister to the great PIE Cinch 4126 bull. He has the frame of his maternal side and the muscle of his sire. A true breeding piece and would be complimentary to many leading breed sires.
The first Pathfinder son to sell and we are excited. This bull is smooth and attractive backed by a legit cow family. The Pathfinder calves have exceeded our expectations and Pathfinder’s mother has never missed settling AI.

This Reckless son is out of the $55,000 Copenhagen daughter. When we visited the U2 program it was not hard to realize what an incredible maternal piece the Copenhagen daughters where. Great feet and fleshing ability and was, for me, without question as strong of maternal cows as I have encountered.
#4343429
Another Seneca son that checks all the boxes. His mother is a black red carrier by SAV Pioneer and mated well with our most proven sire. Expect this bull to make top-notch performance without giving up anything in terms of maternal integrity.
#4343443
We used Renovation because of the maternal integrity. He is by the great SAV Renown back to a Density daughter. The top side is incredibly maternal side of this bull, as well as 12 full brothers, represent two cow families coming together to produce a long-term product for the commercial producer.

Ring in the New Year
by Halla Pfeiff, Director of Office Operations What is your word for 2021? We all know that 2020 is going to go down in the history books as one to remember on many levels. I know it has impacted everyone in many different aspects but let us turn our mindset to 2021 and as you think about your resolutions, we encourage you to think of one word to focus and mediate on all year long revolving around your Red Angus cattle and operation. We are optimistic that this word will help you take your objectives to the next phase. Review of your Spring Herd Inventory – Required by March 3 One of the most important to-do items with Total Herd Reporting and being a member of the RAAA is to review and update your Herd Inventory. For the spring inventory, this is indicating your bred females that will be set to calve in winter/spring of 2021. What we need to receive is simple. Start by pulling and reviewing the list of cows on your active spring inventory. Identify which females need to be removed since they were culled, sold, came up open or have poor feet and/or udders. Provide these females’ disposal codes that represent the specific reason they are no longer in the herd. By providing a disposal code, you are removing each individual female from the active inventory and you will not be billed the $20 assessment fee on these cows in July 2021. All other females remaining on the inventory will be what RAAA expects to receive calf data from for the calving season of Spring 2021 and that the account will be invoiced for under the RAAA Total Herd Reporting guidelines.

2020 Fall Total Herd Billing Cows that are on your fall inventory were billed their annual fee of $20 in December. The females on this billing are what was reported to us as active cows for the fall inventory as of September 1, 2020. This will be included and mailed out on your January 2021 statement. If the account has more than 10 active females in the fall season, it will be billed in four equal installments. Do you wish to pay the four installments all at once? You are welcome to do so. Calving Ease – What Is the Right Approach? By Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement
One of the most common questions during any bull sale season is, “What value of Calving Ease Direct EPD is safe for heifers?” This is often hard to determine not knowing anything about the heifers that the potential non-parent bulls will be used on. So generally, when people call me to ask this question, they leave with more questions than answers. In fact, the same task may be accomplished with this article! When discussing calving ease, it is important to distinguish the difference between the different calving ease EPDs that are available through RAAA. The factor that often gets looked at is the Calving Ease Direct EPD (CED). This EPD predicts differences in the percentage of a bull’s progeny that will be born unassisted. The second EPD is Calving Ease Maternal (CEM). This EPD is a total maternal EPD that predicts the percentage of a bull’s daughters that will give birth unassisted. Both of these factors are important to determine the expected level of calving difficulty not only in the next year, but in years to come as daughters enter into the herd. Therefore, if we want to minimize the level of assistance required at calving, we would generally want to maximize both of these values in our bull selection decisions. This thought process seems simple enough. More CED and CEM is a good thing and the article should just end there. Well, the good news is that they gave me more room for this article, and I am going to offer a few caveats when thinking about these decisions. One common thing that occurs is the printing of actual birth weight information. The thought process is reasonable: birth weight is a heritable trait and bulls with lower BW will tend to sire calves that are lighter at birth. While
36
RED ANGUS Magazine n January 2021
The Calving Ease Direct EPD guides cattlemen and women when selecting sires that are safe to breed to first-calf heifers. this is true, it is important to remember that a calf’s birth weight is not the only factor that contributes to calving difficulty. Looking at the genetic relationships between CED and BW, we would expect that the genetic influence over BW would explain about 67% of the genetic differences in CED as well. This leaves 33% of the genetic differences in calving difficulty not explained by differences in genetics for birth weight. This amount of variation in the genetic evaluation is captured using calving ease scores. This means that calving ease EPDs contain data that explain all of the variation in calving difficulty, not just the factors that are explained by birth weight. To put this theory to the test, data was pulled on active sires that have at least 50 progeny records in the RAAA database and also have their own BW ratio recorded. This resulted in a list of 1,265 unique sires which have a total of 395,711 progeny.
RED ANGUS Magazine n January 2021 37
Calving Ease – What is the Right Approach? Scatter plots were created to show the relationships between an individual sire’s BW ratio and current CED EPD, as well as a parental average EPD versus the current EPD. For each plot an R2 value was also determined if a linear line was fit looking at the amount of variation that was explained by either the bull’s birth weight ratio, or the parental average EPD. For R2, a higher value is better, meaning that more of the variation is explained. In both of the graphs, we see that each of the predictors are directionally the way that we would expect. This means that animals with lower BW phenotypes (lower ratios) tend to have higher CED EPDs and animals with higher parental average CED EPDs also had higher CED EPDs.
Therefore, we can draw the conclusion that a parental average CED is considerably more predictive of future calving ease than that of looking at an individual sire’s BW ratio phenotype. An additional factor to consider when thinking about calving ease is that the economic response for these EPDs tends to be non-linear in nature. What this boils down to is when we look at data, we do not see equivalent economic gain across all calving ease EPD values.
“A parental average CED is considerably more predictive of future calving ease than that of looking at an individual sire’s BW ratio phenotype.”
Additionally, from the plots we can see that the R2 value for the prediction of the current CED EPD is higher when the parental average CED is the predictor variable. However, this metric is not a good indication of which predictor is more foretelling.
A better way to approach that is to standardize each of the predictor variables and compare the regression coefficients. When that analysis is performed, the results show that the parental average CED is greater than three times more predictive of the current CED EPD for these high-accuracy sires.
This factor may be complicated to consider when making selection decisions, so the relationship is taken into account in the RAAA index calculations. A good tactic would be to utilize the indexes to identify your sires and then make sure those bulls are within a reasonable range for use in your herd on heifers.
Calving ease is a trait that many producers put at or near the top of their list in terms of importance. No one wants to get up in the middle of the night to assist a heifer. Therefore, if we use Calving Ease EPDs over individual phenotypes to identify sires for use on heifers, we leverage a genetic metric that is more predictive and should lead to more desired results. Combine this with selection based on indexes and sires will be identified that are more profitable while still meeting desired levels of calving ease. n
Fallon Flick Becomes Red Angus Manager of Performance Data Programs Fallon Flick recently began a new role at the Red Angus Association of America as the manager of performance data programs. This position, which is the first of its kind among breed associations, is designed to garner an increase in the quality and quantity of data submissions from the Red Angus membership.
special projects to help bolster phenotypic data submission on traits that are more difficult for individual herds to collect, such as carcass data.
This new role was borne out of the 2021-2026 Red Angus Strategic Plan which identifies creating and improving genetic prediction tools as a key focus area for the RAAA and Flick will work closely with Ryan the breed in the coming years. As the Boldt, RAAA director of breed imvolume and quality of phenotypic provement, and Red Angus members and genotypic data collected increasto improve educational awareness es, Flick’s role will be ever important on the importance of data collection, in enhancing the power of the Red data submission, EPDs and breed Angus database and improving the improvement. Flick will also manage reliability of its selection tools. 38 RED ANGUS Magazine n January 2021

Located 20 miles east of Bend, OR on the high desert. Our cowherd runs outside on big country, our pasture sizes range from 4,000-10,000 acres. Cows must be functional to hold up on our ranch, expected to breed up in 60 days to stay within herd, and must calve unassisted. “What we like about the Lorenzen bulls is the longevity we get out of the bulls. Since we have started using these bulls, our % of calving assists has drastically dropped.”

Red Angus Thrive on the Red Dirt of Kansas By Tracey Koester, Red Angus Magazine Editorial Coordinator Darrin Eck of Kingman, Kansas, has a vision for his commercial Red Angus cowherd – a vision for higher efficiency and increased profitability. Most would say he has already reached his goal, but he knows with diligent sire selection he can continue to improve his bottom line. Eck, his girlfriend Elizabeth Covington, DVM, and three kids, Peyton (15), Nathan (12) and Sophia (7), are always on the move with their 600-head operation, a chemical and fertilizer business, a multi-crop farming rotation and Covington’s veterinary work. They have three fulltime guys hired and employ some parttime labor during certain seasons. “We are fortunate that Beth takes care of all the herd health,” said Eck. “And we work together as a team, taking care of everything like tagging and working cattle.” Hybrid Grazing on Red Dirt “When we have a drought, our main focus in our red dirt soil is that the cows have to be very efficient,” said Eck, referring to the terrain of their south-central Kansas ranch. “So, we are working to get our mature cow size down to
The Eck Family – Nathan, Darrin, Sophia, Beth and Peyton 1,200-1,300 pounds or less. We are trying to breed cows that are going to be efficient to get through drier weather so we can run more pairs on less grass. We are selecting Red Angus genetics with those efficient qualities.” The red dirt soil in their area has a limited water holding capacity because, in places, there is only a shallow layer of topsoil before hitting shale. The drought in 2011-2012
Eck converted less productive crop ground into a hybrid grazing pasture of crabgrass and Bermuda grass. Cows graze the fields over the summer and weaned calves graze in the winter with the addition of inter-seeded cover crop. 44

Red Angus Thrive on the Red Dirt of Kansas forced them to get creative with their grazing strategies. As a means of feeding their cattle, Eck relies on what he calls a “hybrid grazing” program. “About half of our pasture is hybrid grazing. We took less productive crop ground and seeded crabgrass and Bermuda grass,” he said. “We rotate our cattle off native pasture onto the crabgrass when it comes on in early June. They will graze that until the first of September.” In addition to grazing the crabgrass-Bermuda pastures, they will swath and bale in the same pasture the cattle are grazing. “Most years we hay about 75%,” said Eck, “but this year we were fortunate to hay all of it. We don’t hay crabgrass immediately prior to a hot spell. If it’s too warm, with no rain in the forecast, the grass will not regrow following haying, and the cattle will be left short for the remainder of the summer. We have
to get the bales off pretty fast with the cows in there, otherwise they eat them.” In the fall, they rotate off the crabgrass to their native pastures, and inter-seed a cover crop cocktail of rye, rapeseed, turnips and radishes into the crabgrass. “During the first week in October, we wean the calves for about 30 days, then turn them out on the cover crop where they spend the winter grazing.” On their cotton fields, Eck seeds rye before the bolls open up. Then they harvest, remove the cotton bales and turn out their weaned replacement heifers to graze the fields for the winter. In the fall, Eck inter-seeds a cover crop cocktail of rye, rapeseed, turnips and radishes into the crabgrass pastures, where the weaned calves graze over the winter.
After the cows are pregnancy checked, they go out on milo stalks until a week or so before calving starts in January. “We figure 250-300 acres of stalks for every 100 head of

Red Angus Thrive on the Red Dirt of Kansas cows. This saves on hay and silage,” he said. Our goal is that cattle spend most of the year out grazing, and we only have to supplement with one bale and one to two tons of silage per head that year. The systems work well in our area because we don’t get a lot of snow.” Replacement heifers weighing over 600 pounds also go out on milo stalks. “The cows teach the heifers how to get through and survive on the stalks.” The feeder calves graze until they reach 900-1,000 pounds. Eck pulls them off pasture around mid-March or the first of April, and either sends them to the feedlot or sells them. Then Eck moves the cows with new baby calves at their sides back to the rye-cover-crop pastures. “It puts cows in good shape for rebreeding.” Eck explained, “That ground doesn’t sit very long without cattle. It’s not irrigated so we rely on rainfall, and we’ve been very fortunate.
“Hybrid grazing with crabgrass, rye and the turnip and radish cover crops is a big portion of why we need efficient cattle,” said Eck. “Because the crabgrass is so abundant, we can increase our stocking rates during the summer. We have to be careful in the fall that the native grass is not overgrazed. Animals weighing 1,600-1,700 pounds obviously consume more tons of grass, and we could potentially damage our grass for the following year. We are trying to get our cow size down to be more efficient.” They try to plan ahead for drought years, too. “Every year we are swathing more and more of our crabgrass and pushing harder to get more hayed. After going through droughts, we hate to not put up hay when we have it,” said Eck. “Crabgrass produces a lot of forage. We plan for two to three acres per pair on crabgrass for the entire summer. The stocking rate is similar on native grass since
Replacement heifers learn to graze, survive and thrive on milo stalks.

it is only grazed for a short period of time. We have turned mediocre pasture in to great pasture by allowing the native grass to rest and grow un-grazed all summer.” Marketing Options Eck analyzes the markets each year to determine the most profitable method in which to sell the calves. Some years they market them on Superior Livestock Auction’s videos, other years through their Kansas-based auction barns in Anthony or Pratt. They have also retained ownership and finished them at Buffalo Feeders in Buffalo, Oklahoma. He relies heavily on the advice of Buffalo Feeders’ manager, Tom Fanning, on which is the best option for the current market situation. “Tom has helped our family for many years. He has a good feedlot and is a great manager. He does it right and I value his opinion.” “A lot of cattle are coming off wheat fields the first of March. If we can
Red Angus Thrive on the Red Dirt of Kansas graze longer and sell in May, we sometimes hit different markets and better prices,” said Eck. “Tom helps me a lot to determine where to sell. We look at markets and then decide whether to sell them at the barn or send them to the feedlot.” Because the pandemic hit in 2020 and markets kept dropping during March, they decided to keep the calves until the end of May. They also sorted off 20 of the bigger steers and finished them to sell meat direct to consumers. “They went on corn right after graze off,” said Eck. “Getting to see the quality of finished product and their marbling is impressive and has opened up my eyes to another way to market.” They plan to sell at least 10-20% privately direct to the consumer and hope more small, local packing plants start up for direct-consumer processing.
“Everybody we’ve talked to has been just thrilled with their beef,” he said. “It’s nice to contribute and sell directly to the consumer and build those relationships. If any one of them wants to come out and see our cattle, we’re happy to have them on our place.” Eck also sees additional marketing opportunities. “We’ve sold on the grid before, but after seeing first-hand how our Red Angus steers finished, we will strongly consider retaining ownership and marketing our steers on the grid again.” They also retain their cut of replacement heifers, sell the bottom end as feeders and market 50-70 open heifers privately. “They are calf-hooded, PI BVD tested, and have had their pre-breeding exam and vaccines. Basically, ready to leave our farm and go in with the bull,” added Covington. Red Angus Advantage Red Angus work well for Eck’s
operation. They select for efficiency and maternal traits. “We like having heifers that you don’t have to worry about during calving. We have everything set up on tiers, so we calve from mid-January to mid-March, then the chemical business and farming picks up in March.” Eck said it can get cold in January when they are calving. “We might get a cold snap of high temps in the 20s and lows around 0 degrees,” he said. “The past few years we’ve been more in the 30s and 40s which is nice because we calve outside.” If a calf does get chilled, they bring him in to the shop to warm him up. They also have a portable four-stall shed on skids that they use if they need to assist a calving. The only wind protection is the abundant cover of grass from the summer before which can stand 3-5 feet tall,

because those records are important when we sell 2-year-old heifer pairs,” said Eck. “Nate helps run the headgate and gives vaccines, and Sophia puts buttons on the EID tagger or helps direct calves when we are sorting by weight out of the chute.”
They still have some black-hided crossbred cows that they are phasing out. “The Red Angus cows have a much better disposition, plus we can’t run the black cows in the hybrid grazing paddocks because we don’t have any shade trees in there,” said Eck. “While the red cows were out grazing, the black cows would push through a five-wire fence into the neighbor’s pasture to get to the trees or they would tear up the stock tanks to stand in the water.”
The kids each have their own cow, too, and the revenue from their calves goes

The kids help with the cattle and their gentle disposition is a major advantage. “Peyton helps keep the spreadsheet updated while we are calving

In the spring, Eck will determine the most profitable method in which to market their calves.

They have also EID’d their entire cowherd. “We invested in our chute set-up to include the scale and monitor,” said Eck. “It enables us to track the weights of our cows in the spring and fall, the weaning weights of the calves and then the sale weighs or finished weights of the calves. It’s interesting to see what each cow is producing, and it syncs to my phone through Bluetooth so that I can look at my records on the go.” Covington added that from a veterinarian side, Kansas is trying to get away from the metal clips and utilize the technology of EID. Red Angus genetics with good maternal traits, moderate size for efficiency and high-quality carcass merit. “We are trying to keep that cow size from getting out of hand, so they are efficient on our hybrid grazing system,” said Eck. “We love the maternal characteristics and mild dispositions of the Red Angus females. They are just so easy to handle.” Marketing locker beef direct to the consumer also opened up their eyes to another revenue avenue. “We now have multiple ways to market our feeder cattle – video auction, sale barn, private treaty, on the grid or through the locker plant. It was very reassuring that our genetics are on the right track when we could see the high-quality carcasses hanging and grading high Choice or Prime,” concluded Eck. “We are excited to feed out more steers this coming year.” n

Industry Loses Red Angus Advocate, Friend by Tracey Koester, Red Angus Magazine Editorial Coordinator On Dec. 6, 2020, word spread throughout the Red Angus community and beef industry that Kevin LeMaster, Red Angus Association of America publisher and advertising director, passed away after a brief illness of liver cancer. LeMaster served at the helm of the American Red Angus Magazine, now Red Angus Magazine, for 23 years, not only publishing the national breed journal, but advising breeders in their promotional campaigns. Kim Ford of Bertrand, Nebraska, remembered LeMaster. “Kevin was witty, talented and a true champion of the Red Angus breed. He designed our ranch logo over 15 years ago and has created our ads since then. He will be greatly missed.” Connie Mushrush of Strong City, Kansas, echoed Ford’s sentiments. “Kevin and I served together on the first Promotions Committee, and we clicked over his quirky sense of humor and quick comebacks. Early on, I learned to appreciate his incredible talent to take a concept and turn it into an amazing, unique ad.”
times we laughed until we cried. He was my dear friend, and we shared our personal life dramas, supported each other and gave each other strong advice or sympathy. He was my trusted pal and that’s the best compliment any of us can get in this life.” RAAA CEO Tom Brink concluded, “Kevin consistently managed the LeMaster served Red Angus magazine well and was members for 23 years dedicated to not only its production and quality, but to the finances of each issue. He was very flexible, accommodating and enjoyable to work with. Because he had such close contact with our members, his perspective was invaluable. Kevin knew what the attitudes were and what was driving the decision making out in the countryside. He will be missed.”
“Kevin and I created some great marketing plans,” reminisced Kathy LaScala from Eudora, Kansas. “He was so talented and loved helping people build successful advertising plans. He truly loved the people he worked with.”

A Tribute to the Kevin LeMaster Magazine Era by Dr. Bob Hough for the Red Angus Magazine The history of the Red Angus Magazine can easily be divided into two parts – before Kevin LeMaster and the Kevin-era. I had been working for the RAAA for close to three years when executive Dick Gilbert and I interviewed Kevin in the spring of 1997, and he joined the Red Angus team shortly thereafter. Kevin brought a level of professionalism, sound business practices, punctuality, dedication and creativity that put Red Angus’ monthly magazine in a class where it took a backseat to no other breed journal. It certainly wasn’t that way pre-Kevin.
the best magazine quality, but it was certainly entertaining, full of typos and poor-quality photos. In those days, monthly publication of the magazine was, at best, a suggestion. It would come out randomly and might be held up weeks from going to the printer waiting for that last “good advertiser” to get their ad submitted. That all ended when Kevin came on board, and the magazine started to stay on a schedule with the reliability of a Swiss watch.
There was also a colorful cast of staff that flowed through the office Upon reflection, the pre-Kevin era to work on the magazine prior to wasn’t necessarily associated with Kevin. One young man worked in a 56 RED ANGUS Magazine n January 2021
pitch-black room with the only light coming from the computer screen. Another young person had misrepresented herself as having an undergraduate degree but was actually finishing it with an internship at Red Angus. The trouble was that the executive didn’t know about it, and she had just been sending in self-written reports with a forged signature. Another was an intern who moved into the job and was so far over her head she probably has not come up for air yet. That was just some of the background when we interviewed Kevin. To be kind, the group of graphic artists we interviewed ranged from very colorful to bordering on a bit scary,
A to the LeMasterLeMaster Magazine EraMagazine Era ATribute Tribute toKevin the Kevin including a portfolio that consisted of X-rated cartoons. Kevin was the last one we interviewed. A lot of the interview was a conversation, and we barely looked at his art. He was hired on the spot for the basic reason that he was light years better than the other candidates. The change in the magazine was fast and dramatic. Kevin put it on a schedule that advertisers could count on and he gave the magazine a new look. He built instant rapport with the membership and became known everywhere for the Western-themed
ads he produced. He also got the magazine on a firm business footing, and the chronic accounts receivable problem was cleared up quickly. With only Kevin working full time and Ann Holsinger working half-time on the magazine, Red Angus was represented by one of the best breed journals in the industry. Although deadlines got hectic, they largely seemed to get the work done effortlessly while other associations struggled even though they had a large in-house staff and a substantial field personnel.

Yes, the Red Angus Magazine can be divided into the before-Kevin period and the Kevin-era; and the Kevin-era magazine was something everyone in the breed could be proud of. With the passing of Kevin, the industry, breed and countless breeders have lost a good friend. What he accomplished, how he achieved it, and his commitment to the breed cannot be overstated. Good-bye, my friend.

We hope that you find new opportunities and experiences through the Junior Red Angus Association. One way to create new experiences is by participating in our national contests. The Red Angus Promotions Contest is designed to showcase your creative and technical skills by developing Red Angus promotion materials. This is the time to tap into your creative side while promoting our breed. Next, is the Agricultural Advocacy Contest. This contest is designed to advance the message development and delivery skills of our members, particularly when promoting the agriculture industry. That is not all that JRA has to offer! This summer, even though it may seem far away, we are so excited for Round-Up! This is another incredible opportunity to gain new skills and friends while getting to travel the country. Our 2021 Round-Up location will take place in the Kentucky/Ten-
nessee area. Don’t forget that we have scholarships available to help offset the costs associated with attending.
ship skills, stockman skills and my favorite part, friendships that will last a lifetime.
After the crazy year that 2020 was, we want all of our juniors to take advantage of the many amazing opportunities that are available, especially the ones within the Junior Red Angus Association. Whether you show Red Angus cattle, buy Red Angus bulls, raise Red Angus calves or just have a passion for the breed, we hope you join us in coming year.
A Successful Young Stockman Program Like many things this year, the JRA Board has had to take a unique approach to the way we host our annual events. In a typical year, our Young Stockman Program participants would fly in for a jam-packed weekend filled with education based on one facet of the cattle industry. However, we had to take a step back this year and reevaluate how we could still deliver an impactful event.
The JRA Board’s goal is to get every junior who is the “perfect fit” involved in our programs and events. Who is the “perfect fit” for the Junior Red Angus Association of America? The answer is ALL cattlemen and women. Anyone who is under the age of 21 and has an interest in the cattle industry or the Red Angus breed is welcome and encouraged to join us at all of our events. JRA is so excited about getting our commercial juniors involved that we even have a scholarship specifically for them to help offset the cost for them to attend Round-Up. By attending our events you will gain leader-
Your JRA Board did just that. We created three educational modules focusing on: Adaptations to Production Practices, Creating Avenues for New Resources and Exploring Marketing Strategies. On Dec. 5, we held a live event with a panel of speakers that spoke to the juniors all over the country about their experiences in adapting their operations to persevere in an ever-changing industry. Remember that you can reach out to your board anytime through email, social media, etc. Happy New Year! n

It’s time to round-up the data for the
The onset of the IGS-BOLT evaluation, paired with the submission of phenotypic records, has led to a new era in genetic evaluation for the cattle industry. In an effort to collect necessary female genotype and phenotype information to improve genetic predictions, the Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors has approved the Red Cow Rally. The Rally research collaboration between RAAA and Neogen is designed to increase phenotypic data collection and submission for mature weights, body condition scores and genotypes on Red Angus females. A limited number of research genotypes (GGP-LD) and rebate funds will be available for the project, so discounts and rebates will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
HOW IT WORKS:
RULES AND RESTRICTIONS:
• Members will receive a research price of $20 for genomic tests in order to DNA test 90%+ of their current active cow inventory. An additional $5 rebate will be available for females tested that are 6+ years of age.
1. All members must first enroll by signing a contract of understanding of the program requirements to participate. Research prices and rebates are only available to Red Cow Rally participants.
• Participants that submit both mature weights and body condition scores electronically on 90%+ of current active cow inventory will receive an additional, one-time $5 rebate per head.
2. DNA samples must be submitted via Allflex Tissue Sampling Unit or blood card on the electronic Red Cow Rally order form. TSU orders larger than 50 must be submitted in 96-well trays.
TO ENROLL: Fallon Flick, DNA programs coordinator (940) 477-4589 fallon@redangus.org
3. Payment for DNA testing must be made in full at the time of sample submission. 4. Rebates will be issued as a credit to the member account once additional data requirements have been met and verified. 5. Weight and BCS measurements are required to be taken at the time of weaning a calf during the duration of the project.
Genetic Consistency in Commercial Cowherds by Top Dollar Angus Staff
Working to create greater genetic consistency is not a new idea. Most progressive producers have an established breeding plan they adhere to year after year, and part of that plan is to create a significant amount of uniformity in their cows and calves. This may start by simply making them all the same color. Or it could go further and include targeted breed percentages (50-75% Red Angus and 25-50% Simmental, for example). Another goal for many commercial breeders is to try to keep their females in the same general frame size and weight range, with a relatively consistent phenotype as well. We all understand that uniformity improves marketability and leads to higher prices when feeder calves or replacement heifers are sold. Taking this discussion further, commercial ranchers and farmers can build even more consistency into their herds by purchasing bulls with EPDs and indexes within specific zones or ranges. Suppose a rancher from a central region state desires to keep milk levels close to the average of Red Angus breed. By repeatedly purchasing bulls whose Milk EPDs range mostly from 22-28 (middle 50% of the Red Angus population), cowherd milk production will tend to stabilize around the optimal level chosen. Genetic consistency is also important for commercial producers who seek to qualify their calf crops into the Top Dollar Angus program. Established in 2014, Top Dollar Angus provides genetic verification and best-in-class marketing assistance for groups of feeder calves and replacement heifers that objectively rank in the top 25% of the Red Angus and Angus breeds for growth and carcass traits. Calf crops can be evaluated at no cost to the owner to determine if they have the genetic merit to meet or exceed

these top 25% standards. For each operation evaluated, Top Dollar Angus analyzes historical bull use, reaching far enough back to cover the calves’ sires and maternal grandsires. RAAA EPDs and indexes are the metrics utilized to evaluate these bulls and determine if the calves qualify, because they are third-party calculated and therefore provide an unbiased assessment of the growth and carcass ranking of the herd. With these thoughts in mind, the accompanying chart provides an interesting, real-life example of bulls being used in a commercial Red Angus herd that are just one bull away from breeding greater consistency into their calf crop. GridMaster index values on six of the seven bulls being used in this herd ranked in the breed’s top 10%, 12%, 16%, 25%, 38% and 48%, respectively. On average, these six bulls rank in the top 25% of the Red Angus breed for growth and carcass traits, which is of interest to the owner of this operation, who sought to qualify his calves for Top Dollar Angus. However, as depicted in the chart, the seven bull pretty much became a deal breaker with his super-low GridMaster index which ranked in the bottom 5% of the breed and was quite different genetically than the others in the bull battery. To improve the genetic consistency in subsequent calf crops and reach the desired goal of top 25% growth and carcass traits, the seventh bull should be relieved of his duties and replaced with another Red Angus bull ranking in the top breed quartile for GridMaster. Doing so will create more uniformity, genetically speaking, and will add significant value and marketability to future calf crops. n

The Three Sides of the Carcass Prediction Triangle by Tracey Koester, Red Angus Magazine Editorial Coordinator Bull sale season triggers the abundance of sale catalogs, videos and auctions with more available data than most ranchers can get their mind around. While each data point tells a story about that particular animal, bull buyers need to determine what is most important to help them reach the goals of their operation. Being in the beef business, carcass traits that determine the quality of the beef end product should be top of mind, however, economically relevant traits and convenience traits are often a bull buyer’s first selection criteria. Without viability on the ranch and in the feedlot, the calf won’t make it to the rail and onto consumers’ dinner tables. Regardless, producing quality steaks, roasts and burgers is the ultimate goal, and predictive tools such as EPDs and indexes allow bull buyers insight into which animals will produce the best beef quality in their progeny. As ranchers pore over sale catalogs, supplement sheets and EPDs, they may ask what carcass traits are important to focus on. Should they base their purchasing decisions on the carcass ultrasound data? Or should they focus on the EPDs? If a bull has been DNA-tested and his EPDs are genomically enhanced, do they need

the scan data? Is a bull’s scan data actually relevant to how his progeny will perform on the rail? The answer to each of these questions is “Yes!” Because true carcass grading is only done on the rail, the industry has worked diligently for over two decades to develop accurate predictive tools so ranchers can select bulls that will improve carcass merit in their feeder cattle. Combined into EPDs Three main areas of carcass trait prediction form a triangle of information that is packaged into useful EPDs. Ultrasound scans, genomic profiles and actual harvest data are included into these prediction tools to simplify and assist ranchers in selecting their next high-carcass-merit herd sire. These EPDs are expressed in the Red Angus carcass EPD suite that includes Marbling, Yield Grade, Carcass Weight, Rib Eye Area and Back Fat. To further simplify the genetic selection process for ranchers, they can rely on the GridMaster index that includes these carcass EPDs as well as Average Daily Gain and Dry Matter Intake EPDs. “These traits help to predict differences in performance due to important

Cattle should be a year of age when scanned for carcass qualities. genetic factors,” said Ryan Boldt, Red Angus Association of America director of breed improvement. “Within this selection index, each of these factors are weighted based on their contribution to the overall post-weaning profitability.” Carcass Ultrasound Carcass ultrasound scan data is the basis for collecting data points on live animals – rib eye area, percentage of intermuscular fat and back fat thickness. “Most carcass traits are moderately heritable in nature,” said Boldt. “In seedstock animals, the best method to collect information about carcass trait performance is through the use of ultrasound imaging. Generally, ul-

The Three Sides of the Carcass Prediction Triangle trasound information is collected on seedstock animals at a year of age.” The certified ultrasound technician collects scan data through a probe that emits high-frequency sound waves. The probe is placed on the animal’s back and an image is created that shows the difference between distinctive tissues under the animal’s hide. The non-obtrusive scans take only a few minutes per head. The technician then sends the electronic images to a centralized ultrasound processing lab where they are analyzed, the measurements are recorded, and the data is submitted to the respective breed association and breeder. The breed association incorporates the scan data into the animal’s EPDs. The required protocols for image collection, consistency and accuracy of interpretation result in unbiased reporting for EPD calculations. These timely, accurate and unbiased measurements add confidence to not only that animal’s predictive tools, but to its parents, siblings and offspring. Sale catalogs or supplement sheets often include these phenotypic carcass data points, adjusted for age and contemporary groups for an accurate comparison between animals. Rib eye area is measured in square inches, marbling is measured as a percentage of intermuscular fat, and back fat thickness is measured in inches. Seedstock producers often include the respective ratios for each of these measurements. Carcass Data Actual carcass data that is correlated back to the sire is unfortunately limited. In order to receive that data from the packing plant, the owner of the cattle must request and pay to receive individually identified carcass scores. Additionally, each harvested animal must be electronically identified in order to track the carcass through the grading process. 80
When actual carcass data is collected, that information is submitted to the breed association and incorporated into the EPD calculation for an additional boost in accuracy. Within the genetic evaluation, these are important phenotypes because these are the traits that the EPDs are predicting.
Boldt continued, “This genetic correlation between carcass and ultrasound measurements are moderate to high in nature. This means that many of the genetics that drive expression of the ultrasound indicator are the same as the carcass expression of the trait.”
Genomic Data Carcass ultrasound data has laid the foundation for incorporation of genomic information into EPD calculations. Many of the animals in any EPD evaluation that have genotype information also have ultrasound information that can be related to carcass data through genetic relationships among the traits.
Importance of Phenotypic Data “The limited amount of carcass harvest data, while steadily growing, would only describe a small portion of cattle within the association’s vast phenotypic records,” said Henry.
“Ultrasound phenotypes add critical data to carcass EPDs that shape the future of genomic testing.” Mark Henry of CUP Lab, LLC, said, “Scan data is the reason why genomics are as accurate as they are. Without the hundreds of thousands of scan data points in association databases, we would still be struggling to identify carcass trait markers.”
Boldt added, “Within any genetic evaluation, collection of phenotypic records is the lifeblood of that analysis. Our ability to combine as many data points into one single analysis will improve the overall predictability of that evaluation.” “Ultrasound phenotypes add critical data to carcass EPDs that shape the future of genomic testing and find genetic outliers,” said Henry. “Genomics only work on known markers that were discovered via ultrasound or carcass tests. Genomic markers are NEVER discovered without a phenotypic measurement, such as an IMF or rib eye area that represents an animal that varies from the known.”
Boldt explained how ultrasound and carcass kill data are essential in forming genomic predictions. “In the genetic evaluation, we combine ultrasound data and actual carcass records in a multiple trait analysis. EPDs for carcass traits are calculated using two multiple trait analyses.
For those bull buyers who are consciously improving their end product and supplying the best quality beef eating experience to the consumer, the triangle of carcass merit predictions will add confidence to their bull selections.
“In one analysis, the Marbling and Back Fat EPD are produced. In the second analysis, the Carcass Weight and Rib Eye Area EPDs are calculated. In both analyses, the data on carcass records and ultrasound information are used simultaneously through the genetic correlation between the traits.”
Knowing that ultrasound carcass scans, actual kill data and genomics are combined into reliable EPDs and the GridMaster index gives cattlemen and women the confidence to purchase bulls that will improve the overall carcass merit of their feeder cattle – and put a tender, juicy, flavorful steak on the plate. n

Auction Markets Earn Red Angus Recognition for Marketing Opportunities by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications The Red Angus Association of America strives to support cattle producers who take advantage of value-added marketing programs and capitalize on demand for Red Angus genetics from feedlots and packers. Such goals are not achieved alone and the RAAA works closely with forward-thinking livestock auction markets to best represent Red Angus producers and their cattle. Four auction markets were recently recognized for their crucial role in supporting Red Angus producers through tactical marketing and strategic partnerships. These market owners and managers have taken steps to ensure their customers have the best possible marketing options in their respective regions and have worked tirelessly to foster profitable relationships for their customers and clients. Consistency of hosting a special Red Angus sale once or twice annually, the number of calves sold in these sales, as well as promotion of the cattle and the breed were all considered when determining which markets would receive the honor. Producers and RAAA are greatly appreciative of the efforts put forth by these auction markets, which give buyers access to superior Red Angus genetics while supporting ranchers seeking premiums for their high-quality Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced feeders.

Auction Markets Earn Red Angus Recognition for Marketing Opportunities Angus feeder calves in volume lends itself to a competitive bidding environment.” Simon continued, “Each of these four markets has gone above and beyond to make their sales reputable events that consignors and buyers alike circle on the calendar. We are very fortunate to work with so many auction markets across the country that do a tremendous job, it was a real challenge to identify just four to recognize. “It says a lot about these markets; the management, and especially the consignors that make these events standout year-after-year. The role these markets play is important to us, this is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to those that continue to believe in the power of Red Angus genetics and make sure that our shared customer, the consignor, has a successful marketing experience.” For those who would like additional information on added-value Red Angus programs such as FCCP or Allied Access, or to learn more about Red Angus-specific marketing sales and grids, please contact Barrett Simon at barrettsimon@redangus.org or call 316-452-1792. n

In 309’s first breeding year, he was A-I bred to approximately 1500 heifers without any calving complaints. His calves are not tiny, but come easy and their weaning weights are really good. However, the most important thing is we are raising a food product using a bull that can produce 100% Choice and 50% Prime Carcasses. If worrying about your bottom line is keeping you up at night, with calves that grade this good, you have a good chance of making $200-$350 meat bonus money or save a loss, and… that is the real bonus.

Member News In Memory Larry Dean Ellison Larry Ellison of Springfield, Missouri, passed away Dec. 2, 2020, due to complications from COVID-19. Larry Dean Ellison was born Dec. 29, 1945, to Ray and Ethel (Anderson) Ellison, in Springfield, Missouri. Larry graduated from Pleasant Hope High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from Missouri State and his master’s degree in accounting from the University of Missouri. He was joined in marriage on March 30, 1968, to Merrilyn Woodmansee. Larry is survived by Merrilyn, his children, Kimberli (Russell) Andrews and Kevin (DeeDe) Ellison, and grandchildren, Nicholas Andrews, Caelyn Ellison, Benjamin Andrews, Ashlyn Ellison and Emmet Ellison, all of Springfield. Also surviving is his sister Donna (Carl) Buckner of Fair Grove and brother Al (Patricia) Ellison of Springfield, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Larry had two “daughters” that meant the
world to him as well, Stephanie Jean Matlock and Connie Robayo Shaffer. Larry spent his career as a CPA in a variety of industries. Most notably as a partner at BKD and KPM CPA firms, CFO at Empire Gas, and partner at EllisonLiggett Litigation Consultants. He spent the last three years helping to establish the Missouri medical marijuana industry. He was heavily involved in the passage of the legislation and was so proud to be a part owner of one of Missouri’s first medical dispensaries. The most important things in Larry’s life were family, farm and the Ozark Empire Fair. Larry volunteered in many organizations over the years, including The Victim Center, CASA, Lost & Found, Easter Seals and Springfield Jaycees. However, he was most proud of his work with the Ozark Empire Fair and the Ozark Empire Fair Foundation. Larry’s love of the fair came at a young age when he spent his days at the fairgrounds with his grandpa, who ran the racetrack.
high school and showing became a life-long passion. He and Merrilyn created Harmony Hills in 1978 and shared their love of farm and Red Angus cattle with their kids, grandkids and youth across the country. Larry served for over 20 years as a board member of the Ozark Empire Fair and was one of the founding members of the Ozark Empire Fair Foundation, which has raised nearly $2 million dollars for youth in agriculture. He also served on the national board for the Red Angus Association of America. If you know Larry at all, you know family was the most important thing in the world to him. He loved his family fiercely and took great joy in their accomplishments and just simply spending time together as a family. His family is grateful for every moment spent with him. He would move heaven and earth for his family and friends, and they felt the same for him. Memorial donations may be made to the Ozark Empire Fair Foundation, 3001 N Grant, Springfield, MO 65803.

Kevin D. LeMaster Kevin D. LeMaster, 61, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Dec. 6, 2020, at his home in Clive, Iowa. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Friends are encouraged to share their sympathies with Kevin’s family using online condolences available at www.IlesCares.com. Kevin was born Dec. 21, 1958, in Newton, Iowa, to Dale and Shirley (Monroe) LeMaster. Kevin was a kind and gentle soul, an artist whose work radiated with color and light (and sometimes ghoulish humor). He was a publisher by trade and a host to all, pulling out food, drinks and his devilish humor to all who graced his table. He will be deeply missed but his love and lore will live on. Kevin was the advertising director and publisher of the Red Angus Magazine (formerly known as the American Red Angus Magazine) for 23 years. Survivors include his partner of 36 years, Jim Flansburg; mother, Shirley of Denver, Colorado; sister, Linda (Matt) Buchenau of Parker, Colorado; brother, Doug of Cedar Rapids; many nieces and nephews. Kevin was preceded in death by his father. Memorial contributions may be made Food Bank of Iowa or the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. n
