Creating a ‘Next Level’ Mindset in 2021 By the time you read this, we are a full month into the new year and 2020 is in the rearview mirror. 2020 was an adventure we will not soon forget. The pandemic, civil unrest and the presidential election were a few major issues that we faced. While there are still lingering effects to those and other challenges, we are emerging on the other side ready to move forward. 2021 will be a great year for us to refocus and commit to taking our businesses and the Red Angus Association of America to the next level. Improvement in any circumstance starts with accessing your current situation and then determining your target destination. Many examples could be cited for our farm and ranch businesses but herd performance is a great place to start. If you are not satisfied with the results, you can evaluate the cause and devise a plan for improvement. For example, perhaps your conception rate is lower than desired, and

RED ANGUS Magazine n February 2021

we all know reproduction is a key profit driver in cow-calf systems. Many reproduction problems can be traced to poor nutrition and a thorough review of your program may be needed. Key areas to check are your grazing system, analysis of harvested forages and your supplementation programs. Body condition scoring is another simple, yet powerful tool that can be useful. Let’s not forget the genetic components of fertility. Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability EPDs can help build cowherds with improved reproductive function. Also finding cattle that fit your production environment is critical to long-term success. RAAA will continue to develop genetic tools and programs to assist Red Angus stakeholders. Seedstock breeders can use 2021 as a springboard for their programs as well. A thoughtful review can reveal opportunities to improve. Regardless of the operation, we all can find areas to enhance our businesses. Consider

Board Commentary – Creating a ‘Next Level’ Mindset in 2021 the data points that you are submitting to RAAA for our genetic evaluation. It takes good phenotypic data to calculate accurate EPDs and a solid genetic evaluation is critical for every breed association. Collectively we all benefit from this analysis, thus it is important for us to collect all the information possible. 2021 is a great year to start collecting and submitting more information on your cattle. If every breeder would pick one new trait and start submitting data, it would have a great impact. If you need assistance on where to start, contact our RAAA staff. RAAA is committed to “next level” performance in 2021. Our Strategic Planning Committee has completed their work and the new plan is off and running. The plan is very aggressive, and it is apparent that we intend to take Red Angus to new heights.

8

We will continue our commitment to the commercial cattle industry and relentlessly pursue innovations that create stakeholder value. Our pull-through marketing efforts will be intensified with major emphasis on the value created with Red Angus-sired steers. Sustainable beef production is just beginning to be defined but we believe it will have a dramatic impact and the Red Angus cow offers many answers to the questions about sustainable beef production. Her outstanding reproductive performance and longevity make her a great centerpiece for the industry going forward. 2021 will provide all of us a great opportunity to refocus and reset our direction. Let’s take full advantage of this chance moving forward together to improve our business, our industry and our RAAA. n

Genetics Take Centerstage in the Beef Business Sometimes the pace of change in the U.S. beef industry proceeds slowly enough that it is difficult to perceive. Then we wake up one day and realize things are different, and that we need to adjust the way we operate – and fast! Cow-calf producers, like everyone else in the business community, must keep up with changing market demands, or eventually risk selling their calves at discounted prices. Dr. Ken Odde, professor, Kansas State University Department of Animal Science, recently made this memorable statement: “The past 20 years in the feeder cattle market has been mostly about factors relating to health, the next 20 years will be about genetics.” Genetics! Genetics! The importance of genetics going forward cannot be overstated. Odde, whose 40-plus-year career provided him with extensive experience in both industry and academia (all while continuing to operate his family’s South Dakota ranch), is a person worth listening to. Odde’s background is unique in that he also spent more than two decades analyzing lot by lot feeder calf prices using data from Superior Livestock video sales. He and statistician Mike King have committed more time pouring over cattle price data, and identifying the factors affecting premiums and discounts, than virtually anyone anywhere. Their analysis is beneficial in educating cattle producers about an increasing number of value-added opportunities in health management, and more recently in breed and genetics programs. For example, VAC 45 and

RED ANGUS Magazine n February 2021

VAC 60 weaning and preconditioning programs have been shown to add $8 to $10 per cwt to feeder calf prices (other factors equal), which represents a significant premium. Red Angus Magazine readers will also be familiar with the Red Angus heifer premium that came out of the same Odde/King Superior Livestock data analysis and typically ranges from $10 to nearly $15 per cwt, depending on the year. What Odde is referencing in his statement is that genetics, and various programs based upon specific genetics, are emerging as a greater price determinant in marketing feeder cattle and replacement heifers. He sees that trend taking on even greater momentum in the years ahead. Thinking Downstream A logical question that follows this increased emphasis on genetics is, “What type of genetic characteristics is the market looking for?” If certain genetics are taking on a more influential role in the sale price of feeder calves and replacement heifers, it could be important to understand what buyers favor. To answer that question, we need to think “downstream” in the beef supply chain and put ourselves in the shoes of those who bid on and buy cattle that cowcalf producers are selling. The short answer for replacement-quality heifers is that buyers demand some breeds more than others, and, fortunately, Red Angus tops the list! Additionally, they need strong maternal traits related to early and sustained fertility, reasonable maintenance expenses and cow size, average to above-average produc-

Association Commentary – Genetics Take Centerstage in the Beef Business tivity through weaning and enough growth and carcass to make a positive contribution when combined with the sire(s) of choice for creating valuable feeder steers. Throw in good feet and a docile disposition and that pretty much covers the bases for building a premium-worthy group of heifers. On the feeder calf side (all steers and non-replacement heifers), the list is not too long. Feedlot buyers want above-average growth, efficiency of gain, potential for a fairly heavy finish weight and excellent carcass traits that can be marketed successfully on a grid. Health is critical too, of course, but that is mostly management related (non-genetic). If Odde is right, and genetics are in the process of taking centerstage, we can be sure that greater market differentiation is on the way as well. As a breed, Red Angus has the genetics within its population to compete successfully in the ever-evolving marketplace. We also have the right selection tools in the form of EPDs and indexes to create cattle with tremendous genetic merit for all industry segments. n

Marketing Update

by Barrett Simon, Commercial Marketing Specialist

Red Angus Indices Provide Added Confidence in Spring Decision Making Springtime is generally filled with what seems like a never-ending list of tasks – particularly for the bull producer. In addition to feeding hay, there are heifers calving, birthweights to be recorded, fence to get around before summer and so forth.

Balanced trait selection is vital to the continued success of the Red Angus breed. Offering a versatile product that appeals to feeder cattle buyers just as their sisters appeal to those searching for replacement heifers.

You will find that there is truly a difference in the type of bulls we use in our program. We breed cattle based on how they perform in the real world and are maternally focused and profit driven. We pay close attention to each cow family and how they perform against one another. We structure our breeding program off balance, use multiple-trait selection, and understand the importance of having the right type of cow that thrives in a forage-based environment.

Member Services Bulletin by Halla Pfeiff, Director of Office Operations

Sale Catalog Data Extract Report – Another Tool in the Toolbox The Sale Catalog Data Extract report is available in REDSPro for all members to utilize at any time, but specifically for reviewing and generating sale catalog documents. What information does it display? • Individual animal information (ID, date of birth, sex, name, category, etc.) • Actual weight data, plus adjusted weights • All EPD information (Index and EPD values, percentile and accuracy) • DNA test completed • Three generation pedigree (registration number and name) Note: If an item is not available in the report which would be valuable to include, let us know and we can add it. Where is the Sale Catalog Extract Report Located? Log in to your REDSPro account to access the My Reports/ Downloads tab, My Reports. Select the specific group of animals or use the quick group option, then select the report labeled SCDE/Pedigree. The SCDE Limited version has all of the same information but only includes the sire and dam information instead of the three generation. Spring Herd Inventory Due March 3 – Important Step to Complete! The Spring Herd Inventory update is an opportunity for members to dispose of females that have either died or have been sold as commercial. This time also provides another check to make sure all females have been transferred to the new owners. Heifers will be included on the Spring Cow Inventory if they are 16 months of age as of Jan. 1. The inventory will determine the Spring THR assessments that are billed in July. It is critical that the review of the inventory occurs for each account by March 3.

Member Services Bulletin DNA Busy Season is Now – Submit Accordingly The office has the largest influx in DNA submissions this time of year in conjunction with the spring bull sale season. We are running within the normal 15-20 business days timeframe for returned results, however, please be aware of the peak in seasonality. Submissions to the lab occur two times a week (Monday and Wednesday). We ask that all submissions to RAAA include the order form (electronic if you can), full payment and, of course, the samples. Logo Rebrand Leads to New Certificate Layout Over the last year, the association has gone through a rebrand. This was necessary to provide a fresh look and sync-up materials with our well-known tag line, “Ranch Tested. Rancher Trusted.” While the rebrand was officially released for use in the summer of 2020, we are still working on updating all materials with the new brand as old materials are diminished. A significant item to be updated in the near future is the official color registration certificate. Not only will the new logo be incorporated but it will now be displayed with the following:

Positively charged! AMPT is revolutionizing cattle mineral nutrition by precisely targeting optimum nutrient levels, complementing forage, to deliver the best performance - nothing more, nothing less. That’s the revolution of precision supplementation.

JRA Update

by Andrea Rutledge, JRA President Juniors – It’s time to STEP UP Thomas Edison once said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” However, work is something that our juniors are no strangers to. We have seen our members time and time again STEP UP and put in the work to go the extra mile and find those opportunities that enable them to be that much more successful. That is how our juniors STEP UP every day. Take for instance our juniors who STEPPED UP and participated in the first-ever virtual Young Stockman Program. They didn’t have to participate, but they saw an opportunity to grow and gain knowledge. They were willing to put in the effort that was needed. They took time out of their busy schedules to learn from the JRA board as well as produce Red Talks

32

and participate in a group Zoom meeting. What are some ways that each of you can STEP UP? Where are the opportunities that could be in front of you? Maybe it is attending a new show this year, encouraging future JRA members, making a phone call to that neighbor who has wisdom to share, or even reaching out to a professional in the industry. Whatever the opportunity is that is within your reach, don’t hesitate to STEP UP and go for it regardless; just because of the hard work that may be associated with it. So often, the rewards far exceed the labor. Perhaps that next opportunity at your feet is to apply for the Junior Red Angus Board of Directors. This opportunity comes with a lot of hard work, but it is full of many rewards. If

Why Should We Trust EPDs? By Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement One of the most common pieces of feedback about using EPD information to make selection decisions is that it’s too complicated. Unfortunately, this outlook can lead to the disregard of EPD information, resulting in the use of much less informative data to make critical selection decisions. On the contrary, EPD information should be included in all selection decisions, especially for commercial cattlemen. Registered animals receive EPD information along with actual phenotype measurements and contemporary group ratios. While individual data and ratios are helpful, in both instances these data points are influenced by the genetic merit of that particular animal, as well as the quality of environment each animal experiences. It is common that animals with the highest individual performance in a certain trait, or set of traits, are the most sought after. However, only using these individual metrics for selection can be misleading because they do not account for the effect of different environmental influences. If every trait was highly heritable, then accounting for the environment would not be so important, but that is not the case. Heritability is a metric of how much of the expression of a trait is controlled by genetic factors. Traits of interest in selection for cattle production have heritability estimates that range from 0.10 to 0.50. This means that even when a trait is highly heritable (0.50), the environment will still hold the other 50% of influence over the observed phenotype for that animal. Now imagine the impact of 90% environmental influence over lowly heritable traits (0.10) and how that can cause misleading selection decisions. Of course, the argument can be made that as long as an animal’s environment is of high quality, genetic improvement can be made by selecting off individual performance traits and ratios. Unfortunately, we can’t obtain a consistent environment for every registered Red Angus animal. While in the short run, increasing the quality of the environment may be effective, this method generally results in increased costs and decreased profitability. What’s the Best Estimate? So, what genetic tool should be used to select animals that will help achieve individual operation goals? The answer is EPD information. 36

RED ANGUS Magazine n February 2021

EPDs are the most useful tool to make genetic progress which starts by selecting bulls that will impact a producer’s herd. An EPD is an estimate of an animal’s individual genetic merit for a trait of interest. While I will be the first to admit that no statistical analysis is perfect, time and time again, evidence shows that EPDs are the most useful tool for making genetic progress. The information used in EPD calculations boils down to a few factors. The analysis combines phenotype, pedigree and genomic information simultaneously to estimate the genetic merit of each animal. That being said, not all EPDs are created equal. Some animals’ EPDs have more information available to make those predictions. The amount of information available for the calculation of an EPD is published as an animal’s accuracy (ACC) value for that trait. The higher the ACC number, the more information that is available to make the EPD prediction. This helps differentiate the precision of estimates among animals. Another way to think of this is in terms of an AI sire that has had thousands of progeny reported versus a non-parent bull. In this example, the bulls may end up with an equivalent EPD value, however, the AI sire would have more information available through progeny data to calculate that EPD estimate. So, the AI sire would have a higher accuracy and we have increased confidence that we have a better understanding for the genetic merit of that animal. Genetic Collaboration The RAAA participates in the International Genetic Solutions genetic evaluation for the calculation of many of our EPDs. This genetic evaluation is a collaboration between many breed associations and industry partners to have a centralized genetic evaluation system. Participating in a system like this has several advantages, especially for commercial cattlemen. The most important is that EPDs across other breeds which participate in IGS can

sires in order to make genetic projections. The evaluation uses all of this data to make predictions on relatives of these sires as well. This approach leads to better estimates of genetic merit and allows for more accurate selection decisions.

Equally as important, IGS allows data that has been collected within other breeds to be included in an animal’s EPD calculation. The IGS genetic evaluation currently contains information on more than 19 million animals. All of this data is included in the EPD calculations and benefits all associations that participate in the evaluation. The power of the IGS genetic evaluation is demonstrated in this chart that was generated with information from approximately 7,000 Red Angus sires that had progeny recorded in both the RAAA database as well as other IGS breed databases. The chart shows that, for this group

38

of sires, a considerable amount of data is added to the EPD calculations as a result of participating in IGS. For reference, the total number of progeny represented in this chart is 1.8 million animals. The IGS collaboration allows for the maximum amount of information to be made available regarding these

RED ANGUS Magazine n February 2021

At the end of the day, EPD information is the best prediction of an animal’s genetic merit. It contains the most data and accounts for the environmental influence in individual animal phenotypes. Using EPD information to make selection decisions is simply the gold standard metric for making genetic progress in economically relevant traits. While there are other factors that should be considered when making bull purchasing or selection decisions, using EPD information and indexes as a part of that process is the best method for success. n

Baxley Provides ‘Legitimate Replacement Females’ By Teres Lambert for the Red Angus Magazine Randy Baxley of Visalia, California, had two key reasons for reorganizing his annual bred female sale at Visalia Livestock Market five years ago. His main reason was to restructure the replacement female sale once conducted by the now-closed Templeton Livestock Market and roll it into the Visalia sale. His second reason was to give commercial cattlemen a place where they could purchase what Baxley calls “legitimate replacement females.” Baxley, along with his wife Beth, has owned and operated Visalia Livestock Market since 1994. And, while Visalia Livestock Market has had a bred female sale for numerous years, the now highly regarded “Visalia Livestock Market’s Annual Bred Female Sale” upped its game in 2015 when Baxley commenced his own replacement female program. Today, Visalia Livestock Market conducts two major bred replacement female sales: one in April and one in late June. Both feature legitimate replacement females. “It became really hard in our area to find ‘legit’ replacement females and these two sales offer ‘legit’ replacement females,” Baxley stated. “Legitimate replacement females – not older cows, cows that are off-cycle or cows that are lacking desirable genetics – are legitimate, high-quality replacement females that have been grown out properly

and are backed by a first-class vaccination program. They also have the phenotype and genotype to put the owner on the right track toward profitability.” Replacement Females In addition to being an auctioneer and livestock marketing facility owner and operator, Baxley is also a commercial cattleman – and one who raises and sells legitimate replacement females. In 2015, Baxley began purchasing 1,000 high-quality replacement females – with about one-half of them being Red Angus-sired out of Red Angus or Red Angus-influenced females or straight-bred Red Angus. The heifers are sourced annually from reputation ranchers who are paid a premium for their heifers due to their quality. Purchased weighing 500-600 pounds, the heifers go on native grass in the fall where they are expected to perform without any grain. They are, however, on an extensive liquid mineral program from the fall until they come out in the spring. Baxley then sorts through the group, keeping the top 300400 head. In the summer, these top-end females are given a full vaccination program. They also receive a dewormer

About half of the heifers Baxley sells in his heifer sales are Red Angus-sired and out of Red Angus or Red Angusinfluenced females. In their sale last June, the Red Angussired heifers outsold the others by $100 per head. 44

Baxley Provides ‘Legitimate Replacement Females’ and a mineral boost shot to help develop their immune system and to enhance their reproductive ability. Since foothill abortion is a concern in the area, the heifers are vaccinated in the fall to protect against the disease. Baxley contends that vaccinating against foothill abortion is a must now that a vaccine is available, and he always vaccinates within the approved vaccination window. The heifers are AI bred to proven Red Angus sires in December prior to being pasture exposed to bulls with top Red Angus genetics. This sets up the heifers to calve at 30 months of age versus the more common 24 months of age. “This additional six months in age makes a big difference,” said Baxley. “Breeding the heifers to calve at 30 months, from my perspective, is that these females are more mature at calving and are able to breed back easier. Genetically they have all the opportunity to produce.”

Randy Baxley is owner, operator and auctioneer of Visalia Livestock Market.

Baxley is extremely particular regarding the AI sires and clean-up bulls used in his program.

always pushed the importance of bull selection to them – and I do what I urge them to do. I buy high-end bulls.

“I use what I consider the ideal AI sires for the females and I don’t buy cheap bulls; I buy high-end bulls,” he elaborated. “As our livestock market customers will tell you, I’ve

“Bull buying is a management decision I take seriously because you can get left behind if you don’t. It’s one of the top decisions a cattle person will make each year.”

Baxley Provides ‘Legitimate Replacement Females’ This past year, Baxley added another protocol to his replacement female program: DNA testing using Neogen’s Igenity Test. “The way we choose cattle has changed for the better,” Baxley said. “We no longer have to just eyeball and guess which ones might have the genetics to contribute more to the herd. DNA gives us an outline to select females and actually know the likelihood of how that animal is going to produce. It helps us weed out the lower producers.” While Baxley says that “it’s hard to pull the trigger to pay for each DNA test,” he called utilizing genomic profiling through DNA to predict genetic merit a “no brainer.” “I believe in the data and the information we are getting back,” he added. “Without a shadow of a doubt, DNA-testing is the best value tool you can use in female selection right now.”

“Unless it’s a drought situation, ranchers in our region don’t generally sell their young, proven cows. They keep the good ones that are their top-producing cows and are the heart of the herd,” Baxley said. “Our business doesn’t follow the drought rule; we sell high-quality replacement females drought or no drought.” Value of Red Angus Females While a significant number of Red Angus and Red Angus-sired females in the two Visalia Livestock Market Annual Bred Female Sales hail from Baxley’s own program, he stressed that the sales include more and more Red Angus-sired females from other programs each year. It is not unusual for a couple hundred Red Angus-sired females to be a part of each sale. Another bright light is that, for the past two years, Red Angus-sired females have brought as much as the black ones.

He continued, “I believe that it works. It’s based on science, and I think the long-term benefit to producers is invaluable.”

“At one time, the blacks brought $200 or $300 or more a head, but that is not the case any longer,” the auction barn owner and operator said. “In our sale last June, Red Angus-sired females outsold the blacks by $100 a head.”

Females in Baxley’s program that are ultrasound confirmed for an AI calf are sold in Visalia Livestock Market’s Annual Bred Female Sale in late April. The others bred natural service are marketed in his late-June event.

Baxley concluded, “People are seeing the value in Red Angus females. I push on Red Angus because Red Angus cattle typically are more efficient and maternal. Red Angus females really make better cows.” n

Randy and Beth Baxley have created a market for legit replacement females, adding value through quality, genetics, vaccination and DNA profiles.

Foothill Abortion Disease Carries Huge Financial Detriment By Teres Lambert for the Red Angus Magazine Foothill abortion disease, formally named epizootic bovine abortion or “EBA,” has haunted ranchers in California’s coastal mountains and the foothill regions of California, southern Oregon and northern Nevada for about 90 years. Estimates place death of unborn calves due to foothill abortion at 45,000 to 90,000 annually.

The cause of foothill abortion baffled ranchers until the 1970s when University of California-Davis veterinary scientists discovered the culprit: the Pajaroello tick. In the early 1980s, researchers made another big find,

discovering that infected fetuses were producing an immune response to an unidentified microbe. In 2000, the causative agent was identified: bacteria, a member of the genus Myxococcus.

Foothill abortion was first detected in the 1930s and 1940s when ranchers noticed pregnant heifers sent to pasture in the foothills aborted after returning to valley pastures. While pregnant females carried their fetus to term and did not exhibit symptoms, calves of some of the females arrived either dead or extremely weak and failed to thrive.

Pajaroello tick carries the bacteria that cause foothill abortion and lives in the soil around sage, bitter brush, junipers, pinon pines and oak trees, in dry brush areas and around rock outcroppings of foothill rangeland.

RED ANGUS Magazine n February 2021 47

Foothill Abortion Disease Carries Huge Financial Detriment During their years of studying foothill abortion, researchers found that the Pajaroello tick that carries the bacteria lives in the soil around sage, bitter brush, junipers, pinon pines and oak trees, in dry brush areas and around rock outcroppings of foothill rangeland. Attracted to the carbon dioxide that animals give o, the bacteria-carrying tick comes out of the soil once every few months. Unlike other tick species that embed itself on an animal, this tick pierces a cow’s skin and feeds on the female’s blood for 15-20 minutes. The tick then falls o the animal and returns to the soil. Since Pajaroella ticks can live up to 10-plus years, they can infect numerous females during their lifespan. Once the bacteria carried by the tick gets into the cow’s tissue, the bacteria make their way to the cow’s uterus. A vulnerable, immunologically naïve fetus then can become infected with

the slowly replicating bacteria and will typically die about four months after a cow is infected.

“Researchers estimate that the lost productive use of the cow ... might be as high as $2,000. Researchers estimate that the lost productive use of the cow for the season, plus the potential market value of the calf, might be as high as $2,000. Heifers and cows most susceptible to foothill abortion are those that get bit 30 days prior to conception to 150 days after conception.

Dr. Je Stott, University of California Cooperative Extension professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology at UC-Davis, estimates that ranchers can lose up to 90% of their calf crop when unexposed cows are brought into a new area and are exposed to the tick for the first time. In 2009, a vaccine addressing foothill abortion was developed by the University of California, in partnership with University of Nevada-Reno and vaccine trials commenced. In September 2020, after researchers gleaned data from vaccine trials involving thousands of females, the USDA Center for Veterinary Biologics granted a conditional license for a vaccine preventing foothill abortion. The vaccine is reported to be more than 90% eective, with immunity lasting for three years. A tick bite acts like a booster, providing immunity after the vaccination wears o. n

Electronic Identification Aids Day-to-Day Record Keeping by Trinity Lewis for the Red Angus Magazine

Electronic Identification systems, also referred to as Radio-Frequency Identification, are a potential game-changer for herd management and individual animal performance tracking. When used for identification, they are often referred to as EID or RFID. History Electronic Identification systems are used in 5-8% of cattle worldwide. With considerations like health tracing and value-added programs paramount, that number is steadily increasing. Although it is advancing at an unprecedented speed, the technology behind EID has a deep history. RFID dates back to the Cold War and the 1950s when the first published uses were of Russia using technology to spy on the U.S. and its allies. The Smithsonian Museum documents an RFID tag used in animals dating back to the 1970s. Built for dairy operations as a test by Cornell University, the large device hung around the cow’s neck and would emit data for collection as she walked in proximity of an antenna-based transmitter. In 21st century America, modern EID systems are common in multiple sectors – so much so that many go unnoticed. EID tags are often embedded in clothing, hats, boots and other expensive items in stores to aid with inventory and theft management. For cattle producers, this same technology could aid producers by offering an easier method to

read Bangs tags or ranch numbers without the need to capture the animal in a squeeze chute. “EID tags have been used for over 20 years and are not new to the industry,” said Scott Holt, North American marketing manager for identification with Allflex. “They continue to be major contributors to the advancement of Scott Holt record keeping and ease of validating records to an individual animal.” Holt explained, “Think of them as a Social Security number for an animal. Important records are tied to the unique EID number and can be accessed through a variety of options. Today, the largest use of EID tags in the beef sector is for ‘program’ cattle, where individual verification and records are linked to an EID tag. A producer works with a third party to tie individual animal records to an EID tag and the animals are then seamlessly approved for the program. The animal can then be scanned at a feed yard or harvest facility to tie records back to the animal’s ‘ranch’ number.”

Electronic Identification Aids Day-to-Day Record Keeping How it Works EID tags have a unique 15-digit number and radio-frequency identification. A traditional EID tag is roughly the size of a quarter and about three times as thick. There are international standards for official EID devices which makes tag and reader technology interchangeable, if manufactured to a given standard. This ensures that animals can be read at future locations and technology won’t be stand alone. A reader powers an EID tag and the unique number is returned to the reader. This number is then associated with the animal’s tag or ranch identification number, and records connected to the animal are saved in a data collection system. Producers, feed yards and harvest facilities can use the unique number like a Social Security number for data they wish to record. Information isn’t stored on the tag, making data accessible by only those with permission to access it. Reader technology has improved significantly over the years and handheld readers are still the most cost effective and popular, however, panel antenna systems for large

facilities are deployed throughout North America and read thousands of cattle EIDs daily. Feeding facilities use EID for inventory, health records, withdrawal times etc. The majority of large harvest facilities have readers in place and utilize them to read “specialty or program” cattle. Solutions for Dylan Enger Innovative Producers “EID tags can be paired with visual and, in some cases, tissue sampling devices so a set of tags for an animal can be produced and it can be identified visually, electronically and through DNA, making record keeping extremely simple,” Holt said. Dylan Enger is part of the family ranch in North Dakota. On their cow-calf operation, Enger runs about 475 commercial Red Angus and red baldy mother cows. They typically contract about a third of the calf crop to be marketed right off the cows at weaning. From there, the rest of the calves stay in their backgrounding pens where they feed the calves for 45-75 days. The Engers also retain females that are kept for their own replacements or marketed directly off the place. They use low-frequency EID tags on their ranch. “Over the last two years, our contracted calves have been required to receive EID tags – a two-tag system consisting of a button EID tag and a dangle tag – so we purchased an EID tag reader and compatible scale head unit to utilize when putting uniform groups together to fill the contracts,” said Enger. “We ended up getting enough EID tags to put into all of the calves that we were backgrounding to keep track of weight gains and feed efficiency.”

Facts Regarding Official EID Tags There is a great deal of conversation regarding “official” tags and here’s a few facts to help understand them. In order for tags to be considered “official” they must be country coded with their number sequence beginning with the digits “840,” the international code for the United States. Scott Holt explained, “A producer 58

provides a premises number to order these which they can request through their state veterinarian. These tags are then pre-registered into the USDA database as tags that were assigned to your operation. This enables them to be used as ‘official’ tags and are tamperproof.” They can be used for any daily record keeping in addition to any official

animal health program you may be involved in. Bangs vaccination is the most common. These tags are a starting point for USDA traceability. This process is the initiation of a bookend tracing process, in case of a disease outbreak. EID tags are tools to minimize lock downs and keep producers in business. n

Electronic Identification Aids Day-to-Day Record Keeping The Engers’ primary goal of EID tag use is for inventory and record keeping. “We have anywhere from one to three of us tending to cattle at any given time of the year, so having one consistent way to keep accurate records is key for our operation. Each one of us is guilty of writing down a treatment or pasture record of some sort on a piece of paper, and then we end up misplacing that information,” he said. “We are excited to improve our record keeping to the best of our ability and plan to utilize apps on our phones linked to one account so that we all have access to the same information at any time.” Record keeping programs vary drastically and are customizable per operation. Some EID users simply employ the systems to follow calves through the feeding and harvesting process. In doing so, the calves are required to run through the alley less frequently thus preventing added stress, loss of pounds and potential meat bruising while also reducing manpower and man hours required. Other Considerations EID tags allow producers to emphasize worker safety and animal wellness. This is beneficial to the operation itself and, even more important, to those evaluating the job the beef cattleman wakes up to accomplish each day. They are clearly part of the present and future as automation becomes more necessary and records are a vital step in the value-added beef business. n

Technology like electronic identification can assist producers in being more efficient in their day-to-day tasks. 60

The onset of the IGS-BOLT evaluation, paired with the submission of phenotypic records, has led to a new era in genetic evaluation for the cattle industry. In an effort to collect necessary female genotype and phenotype information to improve genetic predictions, the Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors has approved the Red Cow Rally. The Rally research collaboration between RAAA and Neogen is designed to increase phenotypic data collection and submission for mature weights, body condition scores and genotypes on Red Angus females. A limited number of research genotypes (GGP-LD) and rebate funds will be available for the project, so discounts and rebates will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
