Board Commentary

Right Tools, Right Direction by Craig Bieber, Region B Director With the start of a New Year, this month’s Red Angus Magazine contains a lot of good information that will help breeders move forward with success. The recent change to the GLA Schedule gives our breed a lot of opportunity to get tagged Red Angus calves into branded programs.

“We need beef to be more consistent and beef cattle production to continue to move towards profitability.”

We have also received a large estate donation to RAFI, which will help expand the scope of research that can be done. All of these positive breakthroughs are an excellent precursor to my topic this month: genetics. One of the best things that has happened in our industry, in my opinion, is the increase in beef that qualifies for the upper two-thirds of Choice and Prime. In addition, we have also seen an incredible decrease in Select beef. A better eating experience has consequently increased demand from consumers for beef. Beef producers accomplished this with a lot of different tools, but the one that had the largest impact was genetic selection. We started with harvest data, and in time added ultrasound to the mix to predict carcass traits. That got us headed in the right direction and gave us the data to make quicker and more accurate decisions with genomics. We can always debate the effectiveness of the tools, but the bottom line is that we’ve greatly increased the consumption of beef by increasing the quality we produce. It’s hard to dispute that these tools have worked well, no matter what you believe or how you’ve used them in your operation. I believe in healthy debate, and we can all question the accuracy of some genetic tools. That being said, I think we can also agree on certain things. With time, use and discussion, the tools get better and often push us in the right direction. Improvement will continue to come the more we use and engage in them. How does this concern you? Because as effective breeders, we all need to produce cattle that serve our commercial customers, which in turn will improve the quality in our industry. Our customers benefit from us engaging and using the available tools to produce better cattle and therefore a better product for the consumer. Ultimately, some breeders will have more success using genetic tools, and all of our customers benefit when we use what we have in our arsenal. We need beef to be more consistent and beef cattle production to continue to move towards profitability. I would encourage each of you to engage with the means we have for improvement and figure out what works best for your operation and your customers. //

Association Commentary

Genetic Progress That Gets Noticed by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer

Recent conversations with cattle feeders throughout the country have been enlightening. Our industry is continually challenged by factors ranging from weather to government regulation, equipment breakdowns and market forces beyond our control. However, one positive, and something feedlot managers are quick to acknowledge, is the progress cow-calf producers are making with their genetics. Cattle feeders have taken note of how much beef cattle genetics have improved and are complimentary to both seedstock and commercial producers for these advancements. “Keep up the good work,” would summarize their perspective. Better genetics show up in higher daily gain rates, favorable feed conversion ratios and premium-generating carcass traits, which are visible to those who feed cattle and provide U.S. consumers with the high-quality beef we have come to enjoy. A high majority of fed cattle today are harvested and priced on grids. Live animal performance and carcass traits therefore matter greatly to the bottom line of the cattle feeder. It may surprise some ranchers, but most feedlot managers are knowledgeable about breeds and genetics. They feed many different types, breeds and crosses and often experience the full bell curve genetically, from best to average to poor. Their response is to seek out and purchase more of the good performers. Red Angus is often mentioned as a preferred breed. Thinking about this leads us to consider the genetic progress the Red Angus breed has been making. Suffice it to say, the news is good. Red Angus breeders have been focused on multi-trait progress for decades. They care about both maternal and terminal traits and are improving both simultaneously. A review of multi-year trends in RAAA indexes may best illustrate how the breed continues to elevate its genetics, creating more valuable cattle for every beef industry segment.

RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

During the past 20 years, the rate of genetic improvement has picked up the pace and the average Red Angus animal offers a more complete genetic package.

Association Commentary – Genetic

Progress That Gets Noticed

As shown in the accompanying chart, ProS, HerdBuilder and GridMaster have all been on the upswing. During the past 20 years in particular, the rate of genetic improvement has picked up the pace. The average Red Angus animal born in 2020 offers a much more complete genetic package compared to those born in 2000. ProS for example, which is RAAA’s bio-economic index for conception to carcass genetic merit, has increased by $42 per head. Approximately $26 of this increase has come in the form of stronger growth and carcass traits as measure by the GridMaster index. The remaining $16 originates from better maternal traits as quantified by HerdBuilder. Such improvements are substantial because we are talking about moving an entire breed population. Red Angus genetic improvement is measurable and visible, which is consistent with the compliments the breed receives from both cattle feeders and ranchers, the latter who have made the breed the home of “the most favored female.” As we look ahead, it is easy to be optimistic about how Red Angus can continue creating cattle with even greater genetic value. First, led by RAAA’s three indexes, breeders have the best-ever-available selection and culling tools.

14

RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

Second, the high level of genetic merit within the top half of the population enables seedstock providers to mate sires and dams that will take the next generation to even loftier heights. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Red Angus breeders have the commitment to continue seeking multi-trait improvement. They have done so for years and are not stopping now. Their work and progress are getting noticed throughout the industry with more positive acknowledgements certain to come. //

Marketing Update

Multiple Ways to Succeed by Rachael Oliver, Commercial Marketing Specialist When I was young, and struggled to understand how the world turned, my father would tell me, “Rachael, life is full of little disappointments.” At first, I thought that was a dark outlook on life, but as I grew older, I realized with every little disappointment there is a bright side, and to learn from the disappointment and make it a positive. My father’s saying could not ring truer for 2021.

taken a deeper cut out of their cow herd already and are potentially asking themselves, “Is it time to rebuild?” For some, if they do begin to rebuild, where do they start? What traits or trends should they follow? With all of that in the back of producers’ minds, it is extremely important to remember not to follow one or two traits or trends when it comes to the selection process.

There were many disappointments in the ag industry in 2021, as well as hardships, but with every disappointment there is a positive to be found. It was a tough year for cattle producers. The market was not kind to many, but even with tough calf prices, Red Angus heifers continued to top the markets wherever they sold, bringing value for those cattlemen and women.

“RAAA embraces the diversity each producer brings to the table ... to further the success of the beef industry.”

Along with strong heifer prices, RAAA can proudly say we ended 2021 on a solid, prosperous note. Red Angus steer calves may have taken a beating this fall, but after negotiations with USDA on the breed’s Live Animal Specification form, also called the GLA Schedule, Red Angus can now be included in Angus-labeled branded beef programs. Our fall bull sale averages were at an all-time high, showing there is still strong demand for Red Angus genetics, and to top it off, the market is taking a turn for the better. The coming year is looking to be one of success for Red Angus. As breeders and commercial producers look to their herds and prepare for their bull sale or begin calving, it is important to remember goals for their herds, and what the future looks like for them. This year is especially important for many, as they might have 16

RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

Finding the bull or female that is genotypically and phenotypically balanced is so important not only for the herd, but for the bottom dollar. It’s easy to find that animal with one high trait, but is it the right move to follow just one? The consequences of that action could be the determining factor for the future calf crop and sustainability of the herd. It can be difficult to find balance between traits and finding the “right fit” for the herd. Red Angus has made it a mission to provide indices that truly reflect the beef industry. The ProS, HerdBuilder and the GridMaster indexes can be used as great tools to help lead producers in the right direction for selecting their next top herd bull or female. Implementing those selection tools, along with phenotypic traits, and focusing on their goals allows producers to have a better toolbox, filled with more reliable resources

or “tools” to build a more sustainable and profitable herd. I also encourage producers to employ the use of Red Navigator to better understand their replacement females. Red Navigator provides valuable genetic information on tested Red Angus-influenced commercial females. This genetic panel compares Red Angus females with the breed population, so producers can get a deeper look at the future prosperity of their replacement females. The old saying goes “there’s more than one way to skin a cat,” and that most certainly describes the beef industry. Whether it is seedstock or commercial producers, there is no one “right” way to make a profit raising cattle, and that is what makes each operation so unique. By the same token though, RAAA provides access to marketing and selection materials that can fit in any operation. Cattlemen and women just have to select the material that best fits their herd and makes them a profit. One of the first things I noticed about Red Angus when I joined the staff just a year ago, is its commitment to ensuring the success of not only purebred breeders, but for the commercial producers as well. This is done by providing competitive marketing and value-added programs, along with reliable genetics and EPDs for producers. RAAA embraces the diversity each producer brings to the table, and in turn we make sure cattlemen and women know there is always a seat at the table so we can both learn and grow together to further the success of the beef industry. //

Member Services Bulletin Setting Up for Success After Sale Season by Kai Miranda, DNA Customer Service Specialist As we move quickly through the winter season, many folks are likely gearing up for sale season to sell or buy additional animals for their herd. Some may have already picked up bulls and females at sales this fall. There are a few things to keep in mind to make upcoming calves sired by these new bulls or flushed from a donor dam easy to register and ready to go as soon as the paperwork is sent in! Registration 1. The seller is responsible for the transfer. We encourage the seller to fill out the registration certificate/batch transfer form and send it directly to the office for processing. 2. Transfers completed within 60 days of the date of sale have no additional fee. If the transfer is submitted after 60 days, a late transfer fee will be assessed to the seller. 3. If you have any questions about an animal for sale, you can review its information online. Go to redangus.org > Data Search > Animal Search or contact the RAAA office with any additional questions. 4. To check if an animal has been transferred, go to redangus.org > Data Searches and Tools > Animal Search and review the Ownership section. 5. Transfers sent to the office to be processed by staff may take 7 -10 business days to be completed. A certificate for the new owner will be generated and mailed the next business day after the transfer has been processed. DNA 1. All herd sires and donor dams MUST HAVE DNA ON FILE. Progeny will not be registerable without sire or donor information on file. To check if the purchased animals have DNA on file, go to redangus.org > Data Search > Animal Search and look at the animal’s profile. If it says, “Parentage Test: Not on File”, then progeny will not be able to fully register until the parentage test is completed. Offspring would be listed at “Z” status denoting the need for testing. 2. Check if sires or dams need defect testing. Progeny from animals that need defect testing will sit on “U” status and not have papers until personally tested or parents are cleared. Contact the RAAA office to check individual animals or go to redangus.org > Reports/Downloads > My Reports > Quick Group, list the animal’s registration number > Genetic Defect Suspect Summary. It is also important to remember the following:

a. Natural Matings – Defect carrier within two generations of both the sire and dam side b. AI Sire – Defect carrier all the way back on the sire, and two generations on the dam c. Donor Dams – Defect carrier all the way back on either side of the pedigree Note: An animal might need to be tested for more than one defect to fully be cleared. A word to the wise: if it is a bovine and on your property

at any point, take a DNA sample! You never know when a bull will hop a fence, or a heifer will take a field trip to the neighbor’s place. This will allow you to have samples on hand if you cull a bull or donor and run into parentage issues later. Checking in on these details before the next calving season will help to ensure easy registration of calves and no hiccups for future showing! As always, if you have any questions, please call the RAAA office for any help or clarification. //

Cale Hinrichsen Joins the Red Angus Association of America By Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director of Communications, Red Angus Association of America The Red Angus Association of America welcomes Cale Hinrichsen to its marketing team as a commercial marketing specialist. Hinrichsen Hinrichsen will travel extensively to ranches and sales to promote RAAA marketing programs, conduct audits for the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program and work closely with commercial producers to achieve their individual herd goals. “We are pleased to add Cale to our team,” said Harold Bertz, RAAA director of commercial marketing. “He brings real world knowledge, experience and

enthusiasm that Red Angus producers will appreciate. We look forward to Cale’s contributions to our commercial producers’ marketing efforts.” Originally from Westmoreland, Kansas, Hinrichsen comes from a cattle industry family. A fourth-generation rancher, he and his family own and operate Hinrichsen Ranch, a registered Angus cowcalf operation. Throughout his youth, Hinrichsen was heavily involved in junior cattle programs at both the state and national levels. He attended Oklahoma State University and graduated with a bachelor of science in agribusiness with minors in marketing and farm real estate appraisal in May 2021. While at OSU, he was a member of the OSU livestock judging team, Block & Bridle, collegiate Farm Bureau

and the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Outside of his career goals, Hinrichsen plays an active role in his family’s operation, enjoys hunting and is an avid golfer. “I am excited about joining the Red Angus Association of America as it gives me the opportunity to utilize my previous knowledge and experiences to help producers maximize their potential and marketing opportunities. I have always enjoyed great cattle and meeting people in the livestock industry. Working for RAAA allows me to meet with Red Angus producers and I look forward to visiting their ranches throughout the upcoming year,” said Hinrichsen. Hinrichsen started in his new role on Dec. 31 and can be reached at cale@ redangus.org or (785) 456-3969. //

The Difference Between EPDs and Percentile Rankings by Ryan Boldt, Director of Breed Improvement

In many sale catalogs, the genetic information included on each animal is the EPD value and the percentile rank. Each of these different pieces of information is helpful, but sometimes they may be misunderstood. It is important to understand the intended purpose and use of each of the different pieces of information to utilize both metrics advantageously. The percentile rank is based on the EPD value estimate. In the RAAA database, there are three groups that are used for percentile rank comparisons. These groups include active sires, active dams and nonparent animals. The active sire group will include any animal that has sired a registered calf within the last three years. The active dam group includes all dams that are considered active by not being disposed of in the REDSPro system. Nonparents are all animals that are under three years of age that are not currently a parent of a registered animal. These groups have different thresholds that are based on the animals available in that group. These varying levels are a result of the distribution of EPD values. For all EPDs, the more desirable value represents a value of 1 and a less desirable value represents 99. The EPD information is based on data submitted into the genetic evaluation. Each animal receives the value based on the data (pedigree, phenotypic and genomic) that is available to make the EPD estimate. One major differentiating factor of EPDs is that they are expressed in the units that the trait is collected. This means that weight EPDs are expressed in pounds, calving ease in percentages, etc. This is important to selection decisions because it is the metric that provides information on the difference in progeny phenotypic performance when comparing two or more animals. These values are universal across all animals in the RAAA database, so EPDs from a nonparent animal can be compared to that of a high accuracy sire or any other animal in the database.

RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

One of the major differences between EPDs and percentile rankings is the base distribution that is assumed. In the chart, this is illustrated for the trait Stayability, but the same relationship is present for all traits. In the chart, the dotted line represents the approximate distribution of the EPDs and the solid blue line represents the distribution of the percentiles. The official names for each of these distributions are a Gaussian distribution for the EPDs and a flat distribution for the percentile rankings. One of the main goals of the percentile rankings is to put an equivalent number of animals into each percentile category. Therefore, the chart looks like a square, and it represents the number of animals at each level. However, in the EPD distribution, there are many animals that are centered around the various trait means, and then fewer are out on the tails or further away from the mean in each direction. What does this mean in terms of the difference? Since an equal number of animals are in each category, and there are many animals around the mean of the EPDs, the section of percentiles around the mean is very narrow, and as the distribution moves to the tails each percentile encompasses a larger range of values. This becomes important as we think about selection decisions because the difference in EPDs may be larger with an equivalent difference in percentile ranking. Take for example Weaning Weight EPDs: the difference between a 10th percentile and a top 1 percentile EPD is 10 pounds. Whereas the difference in a 50th percentile to a 40th percentile animal is two pounds. The intended goal of the percentile values is to give a representation of where that particular EPD ranks against a group of peers, but it does not give any insight into the magnitude of the expected performance of the progeny differences. Therefore, if we are interested in comparing two potential sires it is important to compare the EPD information between the two and not only the percentile ranking information. //

How to Enroll in FCCP and AA 1. The producer contacts the Red Angus Association of America at (940) 226-4762 and answers a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. RAAA staff will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, the producer may be asked to supply additional documentation on breeding such as semen receipt, lease agreements or information on purchased females. 2. After all documentation is recorded, staff will ship the tags directly to the producer who must tag the calves before they leave the ranch of origin – birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning or before loading on the semi. 3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return to RAAA with a copy of their calving records. 4. Staff will issue the USDAapproved Certificate of Compliance upon receiving the customer enrollment agreement and calving record.

Before You Hire an Intern … by Teres Lambert, for the Red Angus Magazine

Ambitious college students recognize the value of having one or more internships on their resumes. But should that line of their resume be an internship with your enterprise? At first glance it may sound enticing to get an extra hand for the summer or short period of time, help out a student from your alma mater and/or possibly train a future employee. But bringing a college intern on board isn’t for every employer. After all, an internship is a training program that should result in a meaningful learning experience, with the intern carefully monitored. Before you say “yes” to incorporating an intern into your program, here are five items that can help you enter the experience fully prepared. 1. Define why you need an intern If you’re seeking free labor or a go-fer, then nix the idea of hiring an intern. On the other hand, if you have a certain project that has been on your “to-do” list but hasn’t been done, then an intern might be the perfect person to jumpstart – and even complete – such a project. Additional reasons for bringing an intern onboard are to support current employees who have too much on their plate, obtain fresh ideas and different perspectives and to vet a potential employee. You can scope out a potential new hire in an interview that lasts months rather than minutes.

Interns want actual experience where they can apply their knowledge, skills and talents. Their experience should include increased responsibility while being a valuable member of a team. 2. Pinpoint Qualifications Once you identify why you need an intern, then you know what skills, talents, academic background and experience are needed. But keep in mind that all interns are not alike and trying to make an intern fit into your general box is a mistake. Fifth-generation rancher Jaclyn Wilson, Wilson Ranch, a cow-calf operation near Lakeside, Nebraska, that has used interns for more than 30 years, urges enterprises to “be open to all who approach you about an internship.” “As long as they are passionate about the industry and want to learn, they will likely be a good intern,” Wilson said.

An intern should have passion and want to learn about the industry but he or she doesn’t necessarily need prior experience. The internship will help them identify where they excel. 36

Before You Hire an Intern ... “Their background doesn’t matter. Some of our more successful interns have been those who have never worked on a ranch. Our job is to help them along the way and help them learn and identify where they excel.” Wilson gives preference to individuals who reach out to her regarding an internship because “they are doing to the legwork to get involved.” She also advises that, before you hire a certain individual, you research their social media account to check for red flags that might be a concern. After all, your brand is at stake. 3. Write a Plan To get the most from having an intern – and the intern to get the most from the experience – you should write a clear job description and plan ways he/she can add value to your enterprise. Your plan should include projects that will be assigned, available resources and weekly or monthly goals that you’d like your intern to complete. Be prepared to communicate your goals and measurable outcomes to the intern during an orientation and plan on conducting progress checks throughout the internship. Your intern deserves direct feedback along the way. Interns want actual experience where they can apply their knowledge, skills and talents. Their experience should include increased responsibility where they can take ownership of a task, help meet a deadline and know that they are a valuable member of a team. To prevent any internal friction, it is a good idea to introduce and convey the role of an intern to current employees. You wouldn’t want an employee to view a new intern as his/ her potential replacement. Paid internships attract three times the number of applicants which translates into more qualified interns, a better culture fit and perhaps a future hire.

RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

4. Identify a Mentor Successful interns need to be supervised by an individual who has the management and communication skills, as well Jaclyn Wilson Brock Fitzgerald as the interest and time, to train, guide and mentor them. This mentor should be available to the intern on a regular basis. If you want to influence the lives of the next generation of potential super stars, you should have a super star leader or mentor for them. An effective method of intern supervision is to meet with the intern to touch base, answer questions, review progress and provide feedback. While this can be in a formal or informal setting, it is advised to meet at least once a week. “My internship on a large cow-calf operation in New Mexico was with a family operation, and it was the ranch’s first time having an intern,” Brock Fitzgerald, Shirley, Illinois, said. “I worked side-by-side with the owner, and he was always offering bits of wisdom, explaining the ‘why’ behind their management practices and helping me understand their management practices and style of working cattle.” “He viewed me as an equal and sought my views and opinions. I really appreciate how he mentored me.”

Before You Hire an Intern ... An added bonus to any intern is when he/she is given an opportunity to accompany a mentor to an industry meeting and allowed to network with industry movers and shakers and influencers. 5. Determine paid vs. unpaid internship While current employment trends favor paid internships, students still are open to unpaid internships. The caveat, however, is that the unpaid internship must be with a dream employer who will provide a more valuable experience than a paid opportunity. Before you get too excited about having an unpaid intern, you should know that for an internship to qualify as unpaid, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, both the employer and the intern must agree upfront that the internship will be unpaid. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Labor stipulates that unpaid interns should have job responsibilities clearly connected to their program of study. Paid interns, on the other hand, can be asked to complete a variety of menial tasks. If your company is in a position to pay a wage or offer a stipend, do it. During an interview with Inc.com, Nathan Parcells, co-founder of Intern Match (now Wayup.com) pointed out that paid internships attract three times the number of applicants, and this translates into “more quality interns, a

An internship is about mentoring through knowlege and hands-on experience rather than receiving free or cheap labor. better culture fit and everything else that goes into making an effective hire.” Additionally, paid interns tend to be happy interns. They’re excited to come to work, hungry to learn, eager to contribute to company goals and ready to put forth their best effort. Paid interns having a positive experience can also become unofficial brand ambassadors for your business. //

Red Angus Welcomes Expanded Marketing Opportunities with USDA Spec Change by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Editor and Director of Communications

There are nearly 70 USDA-recognized branded beef programs. Two-thirds of those programs are reserved exclusively for animals that meet the program specifications for “Angus.” Suffice it to say, there are ample opportunities for premiums and improved profitability for producers who are able to market cattle into those product lines. Red Angus producers are now one step closer to those premium opportunities due to an update from USDA.

In November 2021, RAAA negotiated an update in the Red Angus breed’s Live Animal Specification form. These specifications set the requirement for live cattle eligible for certification in approved beef programs and by updating, laid the foundation for Red Angus cattle to be accepted into Angus-labeled branded beef programs, at the request of each individual brand program. Red Angus cattle have always been “Angus,” and USDA officially acknowledged that fact by enabling Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle that meet certain requirements to join black-hided animals in as many Angus beef brands as decide in favor of their inclusion. CJ Blew, rancher and co-owner of the Blew Partnership in Hutchinson, Kansas, is excited at this development in the beef business. “Blew Partnership retains and feeds all steers, non-exposed heifers, open heifers and heiferettes; so, for our operation, this live animal specification should give us market access to schedule GLA’s that are packer-based ‘black Angus’ program premiums that previously we were not eligible for. This one change, and RAAA’s commitment to create market access for Red Angus cattle, potentially add significant top line revenue to our operation.” Beef demand is expected to remain strong this year and beyond. Cattle markets are receiving a welcomed boost due to a year-over-year increase in beef exports for the first 11 months of 2021. Additionally, a decline in cattle numbers last year due to drought-influenced liquidation has set the stage for increased prices for producers from all beef industry segments.

RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

Red Angus Welcomes Expanded Marketing Opportunities with USDA Spec Change The addition of Red Angus-influenced cattle to high-quality Angus-based branded beef programs fills a need which will benefit cow-calf producers, cattle feeders, packers and consumers.

“This one change, and RAAA’s commitment to create market access for Red Angus cattle, potentially add significant top line revenue to our operation.”

USDA and request the inclusion of the RAAA live animal specification as part of their program’s schedule GLA specs. RAAA can assist in this process, which in most cases, takes very little time to prepare, and is followed by a short correspondence period with USDA-AMS. “We are excited for this update but CJ Blew know there is a lot of work to be done in making arrangements with packers to ultimately let those cattle in,” said Blew. “It’s important that the inclusion process is turnkey for packers, which will be a win-win for everybody involved.”

“The new live animal specification is a first step in creating the pull-through demand required from a commercial producer perspective going forward. Starting with the consumer, everything runs downhill through every segment of the beef industry,” explained Blew.

“This development will give us the opportunity to approach a couple of packers that know our cattle, and wanted to buy them in the past, but couldn’t because they weren’t black, and hopefully get them to open some of their product lines to our Red Angus cattle,” added Blew.

“Market access and pull-through demand will add incremental value to all classes of cattle.”

RAAA is pleased that USDA recognizes that Red Angus are genetically Angus and looks forward to working with many branded Angus lines in the coming months. Our goal is to help these brands grow, both in quality and volume, ultimately making them even more successful. //

Adding Red Angus to existing Angus beef programs is a simple process – brand owners simply need to contact

JRA Update

Young Stockman Program Filled with Fun and Education by Natalie Evans, JRA Board of Directors

The 2021 Young Stockman Program proved to be a huge success with outstanding speakers who allowed each one of our juniors to walk away learning something new. This year’s event, held Dec. 3-5 at the University of Missouri, was successful with 34 participants in attendance coming from 11 states ranging from Texas to Missouri to South Carolina. Because Saturday was sure to be packed with information, we wanted the juniors to be introduced to some of the content on Friday night. We started things off with our favorite ice breakers then moved into an activity using teamwork and balloons. The balloon tower activity allowed us to brainstorm ideas as to how our national association can work together to improve each state’s individual junior Red Angus association. Following this, the juniors played a matching card game as a warmup to the rounds of quiz bowl that were to follow. Both activities allowed the juniors to test their knowledge about the breed, but also made them feel more comfortable leading into Saturday’s activities.

Thirty-four JRA members attended the Young Stockman Program in Columbia, Missouri. Moving into Saturday, we started bright and early at Miller Cattle Co. with Chuck Miller where he gave us a tour of his operation while the juniors were able to look at some of his heifers, steers and cows. Additionally, he shared his advice about successfully and smoothly running a cattle operation while teaching us about grazing and reproductive management. While at Miller Cattle Co., former JRA board member and current University of Missouri graduate student, Genna VanWye, gave us a run down on the current research she is doing on heifer

reproduction and development. We had the opportunity to be involved with hands-on activities such as measuring a mature-aged cow’s pelvis and creating different stages of uterine development with an assortment of candy. Being involved with these demonstrations allowed the juniors to see the different stages of heifer development despite heifers being around the same age. She also facilitated a session on applied reproduction practices to demonstrate the long-term effects of open cows, length of the breeding

Stockman Program Filled with Fun and Education

season and culling implementation. Later that day, we traveled back to Columbia, Missouri, to the university’s animal science facility to learn about nutrition, hair shed scoring and visit the slaughter facility. Beginning with nutrition, Dr. Derek Brake spoke to us about the importance of knowing how many nutrients an animal should consume based on its weight, climate, etc. Knowing this information ensures that the producer isn’t wasting any money, and the animal is getting the proper nutrition to survive, grow and reproduce. Next, two master’s students, A.J. Knowles and Sara Nilson, introduced us to a project the university has worked on with the American Angus Association. Together, they have been working to create an EPD for hair shedding based on the animal’s ability

to slick and shed its hair based on the season. Additionally, they gave us a quick lesson on how to score cattle’s ability based on a 1-5 scale and gave us the opportunity to try it out ourselves. Lastly, Dr. Tylan Peckman gave us a tour of the slaughterhouse, and informed us about the process of slaughtering an animal. Fun fact: the French word for slaughterhouse is “abattoir,” and on the campus map you will find their slaughterhouse labeled “abattoir.” Finally, after a fun day of learning, we ended the day at an arcade for bowling, games and pizza! Our weekend may have been quick but was filled with amazing lessons and material that enriched our juniors’ minds. We are so grateful for our speakers and all of those who joined us. We are excited for the 2022 Young Stockman Program, and we hope to see even more juniors there! //

In Pursuit of Excellence, where the only Extreme we Pursue is Extremely well Balanced!

Using Foot Scores to Build Better Foundations for Cattle by Macey Mueller for the Red Angus Magazine Cattle spend a lot of time on their feet so it’s easy to see how structural issues in the hoof can negatively affect performance and longevity in a herd. While extreme cases are often culled on obvious visual evaluation, researchers, breeders and commercial cattlemen alike are continuing their focus on more comprehensive foot scoring and its potential to make directional improvement in foot traits.

Weaber said there was a strong genetic correlation between front hoof angle and rear hoof angle (0.88), front hoof depth and rear hoof depth (0.94) and front claw shape and rear claw shape (0.75).

Foot Scoring Research Kansas State University cow-calf extension specialist Dr. Bob Weaber recently worked with a team of researchers to identify the most appropriate system for foot scoring and the genetic relationships between hoof characteristics and limb angulation in Red Angus and Simmental cattle.

Although scores were collected on 13 different traits during the study, Weaber said hoof angle and claw shape are considered adequate and realistic measures for data collection and animal selection.

The project was jointly funded by the Red Angus Association of America, American Simmental Association and K-State’s Global Food Systems initiative. Overall, heritability estimates in the data set ranged from approximately 0.2 to 0.3, which is similar to the heritability of weaning weight.

“These strong genetic correlations tell us those traits are under the control of a common set of genes, which helps us make a recommendation to focus on scoring the worst foot rather than a front foot and a rear foot or individual scores on all four feet,” he said.

Structural hoof issues can negatively affect cattle’s performance and longevity in the herd.

Although scores were collected on 13 different traits during the study, Weaber said hoof angle and claw shape are considered adequate and realistic measures for data collection and animal selection.

Dr. Bob Weaber

Researchers also looked at limb angulation and its genetic relationship to hoof structure. They found the front side view (shoulder angle) has a relatively strong genetic correlation with front hoof angle (0.46) and front heel depth (0.45), and rear side view (hock set) has a strong genetic correlation with rear hoof angle (0.72). “The structure of the animal in terms of shoulder set, the drop from hooks to pins and the hock set does manifest itself in the differences in foot attributes, both phenotypically and genetically; the foot ends up being a reflection of everything above it,” he said. “The correlations between hoof

Using Foot Scores to Build Better Foundations for Cattle and limb traits are relatively strong but not so strong that evaluating limb angulation can replace scoring foot attributes of the animal.” Data Collection in Seedstock Production Kansas seedstock producer and current Beef Improvement Federation President Matt Perrier has been addressing foot soundness in his yearling bulls and heifers since 2005 after using an AI sire whose sons exhibited some issues. He now evaluates both claw shape and hoof angle as separate traits in a 1-9 scoring system, with 5 being the ideal and 9 having severely curled toes (claw shape) or shallow heels (hoof angle). The measurements are taken in a dry pen or on concrete to best see the entire hoof and angle as the cattle stand. Perrier said foundation traits like foot structure can have a huge impact on an animal’s stayability and productivity. “If a cow or bull has foot issues that affect their ability to travel, graze and breed, then they are likely going to be culled,” he said. “In our herd – like

A bad-footed bull will perpetuate the trait through his progeny, plus his breeding performance will immediately be impacted.

74

most – if they can’t travel efficiently, they’re probably going to be thinner, lower producing and likely late-bred or open, which is a one-way ticket off of our place.” Perrier noted that while bad-footed cows can be a headache, a bad-footed bull is likely the most-costly culprit. “Not only can he pass this trait along to his daughters, but his ability to perform can be impacted immediately,” he said. “There are many factors that determine a bull’s length of service, but in talking with vets and other cow-calf producers across the country, foot soundness has become one of the main reasons for bulls to be culled from the herd, often at way too young of age. “Every year, we have more customers who factor foot quality and EPDs into their selection matrix. Whether they have had problems themselves or are just being proactive to stave off future issues, they’re paying closer attention than in the past.” As a retired animal science professor

Matt Perrier

Dr. Gordon Jones

and longtime cattle and hog breeder, Dr. Gordon Jones has paid special attention to foot and leg structure over the years. The Kentucky cattleman said his family’s goal is to produce bulls that will make commercial producers’ operations more profitable and offering structurally sound animals is a key component of customer satisfaction. “We are very data-driven in everything we do,” he said. “Our approach is to make the feet right so that our bulls can be productive anywhere, whether it’s wet and soft conditions in Florida or rough and mountainous terrain in Montana.” Jones is responsible for scoring all of his family’s animals each year –

Using Foot Scores to Build Better Foundations for Cattle yearling bulls and heifers are scored during the weighing and ultrasounding process, and cows are scored when calf weaning weights are taken, as they also record cow weights and body condition scores at that time. He also pays close attention to cows as he’s rotating pastures and said if a cow is routinely at the end of the line when rotating, it is a good idea to find the reason the cow is moving slowly.

hard foot,” he said. “I look for a real symmetrical foot; both halves have to be mirror images of each other.”

Application in Commercial Operations Jared Lee manages a commercial Red Angus ranch an hour west of Fort Worth in the mountains of Palo Pinto County, where the terrain is rough and craggy and cows have to be able to travel.

“If I see any traveling problems, we will cull that cow early so we don’t have an opportunity later to keep her calf as a replacement.”

Although foot issues in bulls can be genetic, Jones said they are sometimes caused by feeding high-energy rations during development.

He said foot structure is an important aspect of overall conformation and he regularly uses foot assessments to annually select 20-25 replacement heifers from both of the ranch’s spring and fall herds.

“Hotter rations can cause low-grade acidosis, which can cause the foot to grow differently,” he said. “A bull’s feet can be sound as a yearling, but if he got a little acidosis at some point,

76

RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

“Most of the time it’s pretty dry here and they’re going to end up traveling all over, so they have to have a good,

Lee also said foot structure is especially important in bulls since they can often be carrying almost twice the weight of a cow. “When we go to purchase bulls from other breeders, we’re relying on their genetic merit in more than just carcass and growth traits; they know those cattle are going to have to come to our place and perform for us as far as being able to travel around and keep up with the cows.” //

Quality Red Angus Cattle Bred to Function Efficiently

Devastation and Determination

One producer’s story of overcoming disabling injuries to break through limitations by Michelle Bufkin Horton, for the Red Angus Magazine More than eleven years ago, Carey Portell was involved in a four-car pileup involving a drunk driver, which left her partially disabled and a 75% wheelchair user. Throughout the past 11 years, Portell, a Missouri cattle producer, has faced her struggles head-on and openly. Following the accident, Portell began attempting to return to her life as she had previously known it through physical therapy. However, the transition to her new body and abilities was a difficult one. “I wanted things to go back to normal, but I had to realize my situation was never going to leave me,” explained Portell. “I had to learn to change what I can but to accept and adapt through what I can’t control. After the accident, there was a lot that I could not control.” So much in agriculture is outside of our control: weather, markets and trade, etc. Along with that lack of control comes a sense of frustration, pain and struggle. Portell explained that the struggles we all go through in agriculture relate to her struggles of recovering after the accident. While it can be easy to look at Portell’s story and think what we are going through

Carey Portell has focused her mindset to work with her new body instead of despite it. does not compare to the devastation she faced, our struggles can affect us similarly. “Pain is pain and struggle is struggle,” said Portell. “This may be the hardest thing in your life to date. Remember you don’t have to go through this alone.” As Portell was working through her recovery, she discovered the beauty of having a community of people supporting her. She explains that she was having difficulty adapting to

her new body, especially on the farm. AgrAbility, a USDA-funded program supporting farmers and ranchers with disabilities, was one of the key steps in her recovery. They began focusing on ergonomics and her mindset to help her think with her new body instead of despite it. AgrAbility’s website states, “The activities of the AgrAbility program demonstrate the ability of extension services to respond to local needs and make a difference through collaborative partnerships. Perhaps, most importantly, they illustrate how much we can collectively benefit by providing opportunities, expanding boundaries, and making it possible for people to hope.” After her accident, Portell could have given up on her agricultural goals, however, with the help of her community and AgrAbility she continued physical therapy on the farm. Her time without the ability to do that showed Carey Portell was in a devastating automobile accident 11 years ago that altered her outlook on life and her farming journey.

Devastation and Determination Portell that she was a person who needed a purpose and craved contribution and accomplishment. Farming became a way for her to help address not only her physical health but also her mental health. While adapting to the change in her physical health Portell began to learn the importance of taking care of her mental health. “Before my car crash, I didn’t talk about the vulnerable side,” she explained. “But being forced to accept and adapt in my recovery changed that.” Discussing mental health can be difficult for everyone but the more conversations are had surrounding it, the more beneficial it is for the rural community. Currently, there are more articles written, more podcasts recorded and more talks at conferences focusing on rural mental health than in previous years. These conversations, combined with the resources that are available to farmers and ranchers, are fantastic and a step in the right direction. However, more beneficial than those are farmers and ranchers speaking about their struggles and sharing their own stories. Portell started sharing her story of working toward physical and mental health as a speaker on stage at multiple national events. She also authored a book, Facing Life Head On: Healing with Courage, Gratitude, and Attitude, which discusses her accident and her road to recovery. While sharing your story may not involve taking a stage in front of thousands, or writing a book, it can still be incredibly beneficial to the agricultural industry. “Farmers are not the only ones that suffer from isolation and poor mental health,” explained Portell. “But spending 16 hours a day alone in a tractor can definitely make you feel that way.” Sharing your story can be as simple as letting your neighbors know they are not alone. It can look like talking 86

RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

Carey Portell shared her experiences and journey of physical and mental health with attendees at the National Red Angus Convention in Boise, Idaho. about the hard stuff. It can be asking if someone is all right and being there if the answer is no. Discussing mental health can be scary, but it is doable.

No one has it all together, regardless of what social media portrays. It is OK to not be OK and to struggle. That is universal. It is not OK to think you are alone in that struggle.

“Farmers are not the only ones that suffer from isolation and poor mental health, but spending 16 hours a day alone in a tractor can definitely make you feel that way.”

To lead those conversations and address the stigma surrounding rural mental health, Portell recently took on a position with AgriSafe as a communication specialist. The non-profit organization was founded in 2003 by rural health professionals to protect the people who feed the world. AgriSafe strives to reduce the risk of injuries, diseases and fatalities through the effective delivery of agricultural occupational health services.

“My biggest obstacle to sharing my story is myself,” said Portell. “I like my private life to stay private. I had to realize that it is acceptable and necessary to share portions of my life with people. Me opening up allows others to feel comfortable opening up to me.” The more conversations that take place on stages, the internet, in magazines, but most importantly in person – in fields, trucks and side by sides – the more the stigma surrounding mental health will continue to shrink.

While there are things outside of our control in life and especially in agriculture, we can control our actions. Choose to talk to your spouse, neighbor or friend. Choose to seek out resources that are available to those within the rural community. Choose to fight through the struggles in your life with the grace and determination that Carey Portell displays in her story. Most importantly choose to accept the things you cannot control and adapt. Portell’s motto applies well to us all, “choosing a life you want out of the life you were given.” //

EPDs and Genetics: Delivering Value to the Entire Beef Industry by Nate Smith, Top Dollar Angus General Manager

We talk about EPDs and genetics constantly in seedstock and commercial cow-calf business. It is the basis of how we establish value for the animals that produce our final product. The use and understanding of them is no doubt essential for the success of our beloved industry. But how often do we consider how they have and can add value for every partner in the beef production chain? No matter what sector of the industry you are in, most rarely think of how quality genetics add value in other parts of the beef industry. Keeping that in mind, let’s discuss how genetic selection adds value to each sector of the industry. Such insight should help producers create more total value from their high-quality genetic inputs. Let’s start with the consumer, who captures value from a beef eating experience that, hopefully, is second to none. Although we don’t think much about it, the genetics we utilize when breeding cattle either add or remove value for the beef consumer. This is because beef, unlike other meat proteins, is marketed primarily on quality, with marbling in the lead role. Quality is founded upon the genetics used at the producer level that affect carcass quality and ensure an efficiently produced product. Consumers are the segment that drive the overall value of our product through their food expenditures. Hence, they should not be overlooked! Where consumers buy their beef leads us to the next industry segment and how using EPDs delivers value there: retail and food service. These segments of the beef supply chain

also gain value through the genetics selected in more ways than just meat quality. There is no argument that beef is the top product in the meat case, because of our focus on taste and quality. However, an important reason beef is in such high demand by retailers and food service providers is because the production sector has made genetic selections for efficiency which allows beef to be an everyday product, not a luxury item. Because of our efficiency and large volume of production, retail and food service can be confident beef will meet their customers’ demands for both price and availability. In contrast, the lamb industry’s lack of production efficiency (which is influenced by genetics) makes lamb a special occasion purchase, not an everyday option. It is important to know that, while there are EPDs in the sheep industry, they are not regularly and widely used. Beef production has a clear advantage, and we once again see value captured in genetically influenced traits like growth and carcass weight, as well as assurance of a plentiful supply as mentioned above. Genetic selections that bring value to the meat and consumer side of the business continue into the next industry segment, the feeding/finishing sector. While carcass traits do have an impact on feeders that utilize grids (representing about 75% of total fed cattle marketed annually) more important are the growth-and feed efficiency-related traits affected by genetics that help bring value to all cattle feeders. These genetic traits continue to affect value as we move into a marketplace that demands a larger quantity of

Efficiency and large volume of production ensures retail and food service can be confident beef will meet their customers’ demands for both price and availability. 92

EPDs and Genetics: Delivering Value to the Entire Beef Industry product, with rising cost of feed inputs, and, in some cases, without the aid of growth-promoting implants. Now that we have looked at the sectors between cow-calf and consumer, let’s evaluate the commercial cow-calf operator. The commercial producer is where genetic selection and the use of EPDs takes place, where the decisions that add value to all other sectors in the industry are made. Every measurable genetic trait influences the value retained by producers. Traits like calving ease and docility influence labor needs and costs. Stayability, heifer pregnancy, milk, mature weight, and cow-value indexes like HerdBuilder all impact input and replacement costs for every producer. These are the traits ranchers select for that they can fully realize within the ranch gate. But what about the aforementioned traits that add value to other industry segments? To their credit, U.S. cow-calf producers have been making genetic selections on those traits improving the quality and efficiency of beef for the entire system. The only difference is that many cow-calf producers do not capture value from the traits the other pieces of the beef industry find so critical to adding value. Although many producers select for these traits, they do not take the next step to showcase them for additional calf value

In conclusion, we know that genetic selection and the use of EPDs has added value to all segments of the beef industry. Charley Jackson’s Passion for Discovery Lives on in RAFI by Bob Hough, RAFI President

Charley Jackson was a Vermont farmer with a passion for both Red Angus and a life of discovery. He was a lifelong learner who was also passionate about leaving what he touched better for those who would come after. This included his land, buildings, herd of Red Angus and community. By leaving a substantial amount of funds from his estate to the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. Sal Forbes Research Fund, his legacy will live on. It will ensure the breed stays on its path of constant discovery started by its founders; a path of providing seedstock to commercial producers that is unsurpassed in the use of the best available science for objective selection. This path will help make sure Red Angus customers are buying the optimum genetics for their unique situation and business. Ultimately, it will ensure Red Angus provides genetics to the industry that, when marketed downstream in the form of feeder cattle, the carcasses and, ultimately, the beef consumers buy, will meet or exceed expectations at every level. Jackson spent his life working with both his hands and his mind, as a farmer and carpenter, as well as with the other resources the land could sustainably provide, which included syruping, logging and a small sawmill.

His neighbors and friends all describe Jackson similarly as someone who was highly intelligent, fiercely independent, frugal, always asking questions and learning, well-read, possessing a classic dry New England sense of humor, and a good person to have as a neighbor and member of the community. However, his early childhood and training had him steered in a different path than that of a carpenter and farmer. Having been raised in Boston and receiving his secondary education at the elite Saint Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, Jackson was on a path for people’s traditional definition of success. This continued when he received his undergraduate degree from New York University. He then attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, and it was from there that he set out working as a skilled carpenter in Massachusetts and Maine before settling in Woodstock, Vermont. It was after he had settled in Vermont that he ultimately bought his beloved Echo Farm in 1980. Former Vermont livestock extension specialist, Dr. Sam Comstock, said that Jackson’s Echo Farm was a typical “hardscrabble” New England

hill farm that Charley went about improving with a zeal rarely equaled. He improved the soil, cleared land and repaired or rebuilt all the buildings. Sam indicated that Jackson lived a humble life and cared little of what others thought of him, other than his mentors in the community from whom he learned how to farm. Echo Farm, under Jackson’s management, was diversified and as self-sufficient as possible. He started sugaring with a neighbor, and he boiled the sap and heated the house with wood. He logged and had a sawmill that produced the lumber for his buildings and facilities. Through it all, he was most attached to his herd of Red Angus. He had first encountered Red Angus from his neighbor Elfie Forbes, who at the time maintained a small herd. Elfie is the daughter of breed founders Waldo and Sal Forbes, so is wellversed in the philosophy of the breed – a philosophy Jackson found appeal-

Charley Jackson’s Passion for Discovery Lives on in RAFI ing. Jackson built the working chutes and installed scales to collect all the data to improve his herd. He made it a lifelong mission to improve the quality of his herd for efficient beef production and was a regular customer of seedstock from the Forbes family’s Wyoming ranch. Another neighbor, Emily Grube, knew Jackson well, and even finished some of his cattle, which she described as exceptional to feed. She found Jackson to be a unique, somewhat eccentric soul who made a great neighbor. He served as a local selectman and was a volunteer fireman. He was always there to help a neighbor when help was needed. When he later moved his farm to better ground in West Haven, Vermont, he found an equally supportive community. Brink, Kay Klompien, Cam Forbes, Kelli Brown, Scott Ford and Blake Angell – has been meeting every two weeks on how to be the best stewards of the funds. Jackson bequeathed the monies to a RAFI restricted fund for research and development named for Sal Forbes, and RAFI is working to see the resources are used to make the long-term positive impact on the breed Jackson intended.

Red Angus breeders, commercial customers and the beef industry owe much to Charley Jackson for his generous investment in all of these stakeholders’ futures. It is a fitting legacy for this lifelong learner, that his estate will continue to add to the knowledge base that makes Red Angus special; something Red Angus has been since it became the first incorporated performance organization of any kind when it was formed in 1954. This willingness to seek knowledge and take a different road are all traits that Charley Jackson and Red Angus histories have in common, and this legacy will live on with his gift. //

Red Angus Recognizes Livestock Auctions for Creating Advantageous Marketing Opportunities by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Director and Editor of Communications The Red Angus Association of America and its marketing team strive to assist cattle producers in identifying and capitalizing on demand for Red Angus genetics through value-added marketing programs. Profitability goals are not achieved alone and RAAA works closely with forward-thinking livestock auction markets to best represent Red Angus producers and their cattle. In October, two auction markets were recognized for their significant role in supporting Red Angus producers through tactical marketing and strategic partnerships. These market owners and managers have taken steps to ensure their customers ample marketing options and have worked intensely to foster profitable relationships for their customers and clients. Hosting a special Red Angus sale once or twice annually, the number of calves sold in these sales, as well as promotion of the cattle and the breed

were all considered when determining which markets would receive the honor. Producers and RAAA are greatly appreciative of the efforts put forth by these auction markets, which give buyers access to superior Red Angus genetics while supporting ranchers seeking premiums for their high-quality Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced feeder cattle and calves. • Torrington Livestock Markets – Torrington, WY – Lex Madden • Sheridan Livestock Auction Company – Rushville, NE – Dan Otte “We greatly appreciate the hard work all of our partnered auction markets do to provide successful Red Angus feeder calf sales throughout the year,” said RAAA commercial marketing specialist Rachael Oliver. “By providing these Red Angus sales, auction markets expose their commercial producers to greater opportunity in marketing their calves successfully. It is always tough choosing which

barns to award, as all do a tremendous job in promoting the breed, but the Torrington and Sheridan auction markets went above and beyond for their commercial Red Angus producers this year. The role auction markets play is very important to us, and this is our way of showing our gratitude for those who continually believe in Red Angus genetics and their consignors.” For those who would like additional information on added-value Red Angus programs such as FCCP or Allied Access, or to learn more about Red Angus-specific marketing sales and grids, please contact Rachael Oliver at rachael@redangus.org. //

Torrington Livestock Market (pictured) was honored as an outstanding auction market partner for the Red Angus Association of America for their commitment to supporting Red Angus producers. Sheridan Livestock Auction Company was also honored. 114 RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

Ben Lodoen Honored as Red Angus Herdsman of the Year by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, Editor and Director of Communications

selection of the grand champion open female on Jan. 4, 2022. Lodoen was very involved in his family’s ranch early on in life. As a teenager, he took his younger siblings to livestock shows around the country and invested many hours studying cattle and herd sires that would improve his family’s operation. He attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota, where he was active in Saddle & Sirloin and won Overall Showman at the “Little I.” Ben Lodoen, Westhope, North Dakota, was this year’s recipient of the Red Angus Herdsman of the Year Award, presented at the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress. Ben Lodoen, Westhope, North Dakota, was selected as the 2022 Red Angus Herdsman of the Year at the National Red Angus Open Show during Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Lodoen was presented with the award, which was not revealed until the presentation, prior to the 120 RED ANGUS Magazine | February 2022

After graduation, he returned to the L83 Ranch - Lodoen Cattle Co., which was founded by Ben’s grandparents, Leonard and Bette, and eventually became herdsman and manager. L83 Ranch holds an annual production sale and has produced and shown numerous state and national champions. L83 Ranch runs registered Red Angus and Hereford cattle and farms several thousand acres; Ben manages everything on the ranch from breeding decisions to crop rotations to purchasing decisions.

“Ben has always wanted to be where he is today. He has worked so hard for everything that he’s accomplished and there isn’t a timecard big enough for the time and passion he pours into the ranch. He learns something at every show he goes to and shares it with those around him,” remarked Rylee Marthaler, Ben’s sister. She added, “There are always people asking him for advice and favors, and he very rarely says ‘no.’ He doesn’t hesitate to drop everything and help a friend. For example, when he drops cattle at a customer’s home, he has been known to do their chores and feed the dog, as well! I am so proud of the humble, genuine, kind and hard-working man he is.” The Herdsman of the Year Award is presented to a hands-on individual who has most effectively presented his or herself in a professional manner while at the show.
