Pioneer’s Lesson of Progression Applicable to EPDs We have a dugout on our property that is obviously a temporary home from an early settler – a depression approximately the size of a flatbed. I cannot imagine spending a single night there, let alone living there during the extremely cold winter months or hot summer days so common in the Flint Hills of Kansas. The pioneer who stayed there had basic needs that had to be met. However, as soon as he had the resources, he moved to a more permanent home. The evolution of livestock selection is no different. In 1954 when RAAA formed and requiring a birth date and weaning weight for registration, it was revolutionary. Nurse cows were commonly used in purebred herds to boost performance because selection was basically based on visual appraisal. The fledging new Red Angus Association of America discouraged that practice. Anyone who was a part of the beef industry when Don Good picked a CharolaisAngus-cross steer at the 1969 Chicago Stock Show has stories about crossbreeding utilizing Continental breeds. Many learned the hard way that additional tools were needed to better evaluate cattle. Just like the homesteader not willing to settle for a dugout, RAAA is always looking forward as livestock selection tools continue to progress. I remember vividly the BrainTrust in Denver when the concept was introduced that animals could accurately be compared across contemporary groups utilizing EPDs. Science has proven that EPDs are far better for comparison than actual and adjusted data. Now some 20 years later, I hear EPDs referred to as ‘good or bad.’ Expected Progeny Differences are a prediction of how the progeny of the animal will perform. Because EPDs are calculated

6 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

utilizing actual data from the individual as well as performance from its pedigree, more data reported into accurate contemporary groups for more generations builds a solid foundation for EPDs. A common misconception is that genomic input should replace the need for actual data reporting. The genomic panel has to be trained to recognize gene markers for traits. Without actual data, the ability to recognize those markers will be diminished. Used correctly, genomics can add the value of as many as 10 progeny toward predicting the genetic merit of the animal. Do you think the following two real life cattlemen have the same opinion of a good or bad EPD? The first has 100 cows and lives 60 miles from them. They only get attention on weekends when they get a week’s worth of feed, even while calving. Contrast him with a farmer who calves early so bulls are turned out and calves can be processed before he starts planting. He raises unlimited feed and crop residue, and is willing to live with the cows until he starts farming. Taking EPDs and indices compiled from EPDs, producers must decide which ones they want to put pressure on for their cow herd. Are EPDs absolute? Though they are better than using actual and adjusted data, EPDs can change as more data is incorporated to support them. To illustrate possible change in EPDs, two actual animals, copied from REDSPro will be compared using YW EPD. A proven herd sire, Bull 1, with progeny reported from many herds, will contrast a nonparent bull, Bull 2, with no actual yearling weight, very little data, and no progeny reported. See Table 1 on page 8.

Bull 1 has a yearling EPD of 80, accuracy of 90 percent and ranks in the top 73 percentile for proven herd sires. Bull 2 has a Yearling EPD of 85 with 7 percent accuracy and ranks in the top 63 percentile for non-proven bulls. Utilizing the EPD Possible Change table that can be accessed from the genetic tab on the RAAA website, Table 2, we see Bull 1 with 90 percent accuracy for YW could move three pounds either way for a change from 77 to 83 pounds for yearling weight. Bull 2, with 7 percent accuracy, could move in the range of 23 to 26 pounds using the EPD Possible Change table. For our purposes, we will use 24 pounds. So, with an accuracy of 7 percent, actual genetic merit for Bull 2 could be anywhere from 61 to 109 YW EPD. EPD Possible Change Table ACC CED BW WW YW MILK ME HPG 0.0 9 3.0 16 26 12 3 11

Table 2

Source: redangus.org/genetics/epd-possible-change

This was an extreme comparison to illustrate the importance of reporting data accurately and completely as well as the range for possible change in EPDs prior to actual data and progeny performance being included. While the EPDs representing traits can change as additional information is added, the genetic potential of each animal is determined at conception. When Bull 2 reports an actual yearling weight as well as data from progeny or genomics, his YW EPD will move up or down. Does that mean he is getting better or worse? No. It adjusts as his YW EPD begins to more accurately reflect his true genetic potential. It is up to you to determine which EPDs are good or bad for your cow herd defined by your management style, environment and marketing goals. Regardless of the EPDs, no matter how much an embryo, semen, bull or dam costs, it should be objectively evaluated for basic needs. That includes conformation, feet, legs, udder and ability to reproduce.

Seedstock Producers with a Commercial Focus! 8 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

For Red Angus to continue to be the breed of choice, we need to be just like the settler in the dugout – mindful of basic needs yet always looking for something just a little bit better. If seedstock providers couple an objective visual appraisal and aggressive culling regiment with accurate genetic predictors, the ultimate winner is the decider of RAAA success – the commercial cattleman. ■

Nuggets of truth and perspective are often found in the writings of bright minds from the past. One such nugget was recently unearthed from the September 1989 ARA Magazine. Dr. Bill Turner, then a Beef Cattle Science Professor at Texas A&M University, wrote an article discussing which traits are important to different segments of the beef industry. He grounded his thoughts in the 1980 work of Dr. Bob Taylor, who, at that time, was a well-known animal science professor at Colorado State University. Taylor summarized his conclusions in the table shown below which, though approaching 40 years in age, still offers us much today.

producers (keep in mind that the race for larger and larger-framed cattle was well underway at the time his article was published). Turner also prophetically stated that, “Breeds not acceptable or accountable [to commercial producers] will not be used nor remain a significant factor in the national breeding herd.” He was spot on with this comment as multiple breeds that were strong and growing in 1989 are today just a shadow of their former selves.

Then and Now If we adapt Taylor’s trait list to today’s industry conditions, a few would change or be modified somewhat. However, many are just as important as they were in 1980. Association Commentary Moving down the supply chain to the packer segment, very little has changed. Weight still matters and, other than adding specificity by changing “carcass grade” to “carcass quality grade,” Taylor’s genetic trait list for packers remains essentially unchanged. At the retail level, quality grade has become much more important in the past three to four decades. Many more branded beef programs have emerged, the majority emphasizing high levels of marbling. This significantly addresses the Taylor line item “product appeal,” because such programs give consumers more choices at the meat counter. Cutability or red-meat yield has been enhanced at the retail level not so much by breeding the fat off, but through more trimming prior to primal/subprimal beef cuts being sold by packers to retailers. Finally, there’s the consumer, who we must never forget, whose beef expenditures at retail and in restaurants fund the entire industry. Their needs and desires must be met to give the rest of the beef business any chance at all to succeed. And what do they want today? Lean-to-fat and lean-to-bone ratios could perhaps be replaced on this list by (1) food safety, (2) quality, which has become almost synonymous with marbling, and (3) specific information about how the product was produced, including any other special characteristics it brings to the literal table. Last, but not least, on Taylor’s list is consistency of product. The 2016 NCBA Beef Quality Audit did not identify “uniformity” as one of its top areas in which the industry needs to improve. Yet when we look at variability in carcass weights, tenderness and ribeye size (to name a few), it’s clear that the industry still has much work to do in making its product more consistent. Red Angus is Well Connected There are important takeaways from the perspective offered by Taylor and Turner. Both seedstock and commercial beef producers should always remember they serve a larger audience: the entire beef supply chain from conception to consumer. The Red Angus breed has historically done an outstanding job understanding which traits matter to each industry segment, and breeding cattle that get the job done clear across the spectrum. Red Angus has, in fact, stayed well connected to the needs of commercial cattlemen. This has been important to breed growth and success during the past several decades, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. ■

The Zoo

Marketing Update by Gary D. Fike, Director of Commercial Marketing

My favorite animal to see at the zoo is probably the elephant. Why? They are massive. They have this huge trunk with the fingerlike projections that they use in a number of ways – eating, drinking, spraying water, etc. They seem so docile and gentle, and though I’ve never worked with one, it seems like it would be an interesting encounter to do so. The volume of forage and feed they consume is hard to imagine. There’s just a lot of things I like about them and I like to watch them. The zoo provides a place for people to visit the strange and unusual animals that they do not see in their everyday lives. Cattle are the opposite of zoo animals. We see them all the time on our farms, ranches and feedlots. It is really not that extraordinary to see a cow grazing in a pasture for the average citizen. Most people don’t think that much about it unless you are a total city dweller who never does, yet it would also not be that unusual for them to spot one somewhere, and they’d probably know what it is. The reason I draw this analogy is that I wonder someday, far into the future, if cattle will become zoo animals. No, I have not jumped off the sanity ship, although I am being somewhat facetious. We raise beef cattle for an end product. We do not raise cattle for people to drive by and look, and say, “Hey, look! A cow!” We all like the pastoral setting with cows and calves grazing in green meadows or in a lush valley. We take pride in the type of cattle we raise, and how they look. However, the ultimate value of the industry is chiefly driven by what is in the consumer’s wallet and how much of it they are willing to give up to consume what we produce – Beef. Even your cows, once they have been used up, become product for the consuming public. And not just for ground beef. Many whole muscle cuts go into lower end or fast food restaurants to be used for various products. We know, and have known, since the 1920s, that marbling

in beef is a driver of value. Marbling adds taste and juiciness. Not necessarily tenderness, as those two traits are poorly correlated, but taste is the No. 1 reason that people eat beef, and marbling is the No. 1 physical characteristic that add to that. The packer in nearly every grid pays premiums for cattle that grade in the upper two-thirds of Choice and Prime. These premiums generally range from $30 to as much as $300 per head. This past summer, those premiums hit record prices. I know that one grid was paying $48 per cwt for a Prime over a low Choice. On an 800-pound carcass, that’s $384 per head. On a 900-pound carcass, it’s $432 per head. Who doesn’t want that? Who doesn’t want to eat that? Everybody would like to have that, and everybody would prefer to eat that. And, by the way, marbling fat is a “heart-healthy” fat, high in oleic acids and good for you. So, you can’t pull the health card out on me here. The other part of this story is that marbling is a moderately to highly heritable trait. Red Angus cattle are genetically predisposed to good marbling, but stacking that trait can reap huge benefits down the road in terms of beef demand for Red Angus-sired calves. It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. As a matter of fact, we’re past that point. I encourage everyone to somehow, some way, someday, to feed the steers and non-replacement heifers to harvest, sell them on a grid, get the carcass data, and see what they are producing. The market sorts them out for you anyway, inside the cooler at the packing plant, and upcharges down the line for premium product. If you sell finished cattle on the cash market that grade well, you don’t see a dime of that. People want a good to great eating experience, especially considering the price premium they pay for beef over pork or chicken. We need to make it great every time. Otherwise, eating experiences are poor which leads to less demand, which leads to lower prices, which leads to cutting down on cow numbers … … which leads us to the zoo where you can see the cow in the pen next to the elephant! ■

Many get the question, “What is your New Year’s resolution?” But really, the question should be, “How can we make improvements all year long – even five years from now?” We encourage all to fill out a Herd Improvement Plan and let us follow up with you on your operational goals. This blank plan allows you to evaluate and keep a hard copy of your objectives.

Here are a few examples of a few questions the plan asks for assessment on: Using scores 1-3, indicate the importance of the traits below when you are selecting Red Angus herd bulls (1=High, 2=Moderate, 3=Low, and blank = Not Considered): Indices: __ HB __ GM EPDs: __CED __BW __ WW __YW __Milk __ME __ HPG __CEM __STAY __ Marb __YG __CW __REA ___Fat Traits: __ Phenotype __ Disposition __ Feet __ Individual Performance (BW etc.) __ Pedigree __ Breeder __ Scrotal Circumference List and briefly describe any measurements, metrics, and/or benchmarks you use on an annual basis to evaluate the success of your operation (For example: 93% of exposed females wean a calf; $50 profit/grazed acre; Sell 100 seedstock bulls that average $1,000 over expenses; stay in business; etc.): How can RAAA help you achieve your herd improvement goals? 2018 International Birth Year Letter is ‘F’ Many producers add this letter to the animal ID as an indicator specifically in females that have the same ID number but were born in different years. Example: dam 123 had a female calf in 2017 and 2018, so her offspring’s ID number could be 123E and 123F.

Member Services Update

Nolan Woodruff Joins Red Angus Association of America

The tremendous growth of the Red Angus breed in recent years has created the need for additional staff to keep up with the demands of increasing registrations, member requests and data management. To accommodate the Red Angus membership, the Red Angus Association of America has added Nolan Woodruff, a native of Ventura, California, to the RAAA staff as a REDSPro and registry specialist. Woodruff, a 2017 graduate of the University of Wyoming, has extensive background in beef cattle production through his experiences working for B Slash Ranch near Frannie, Wyoming, where he assisted with herd management. A 4-H and FFA alumnus, he carried those experiences to college where he was a member of the 2016 University of Wyoming Livestock Judging Team, as well as the head coach of the 2017 Albany County 4-H Livestock Judging Team. “I am very excited to join the Red Angus team and work to advance the awareness of this important breed. I look forward to growing in knowledge and experience in this position and I appreciate the opportunity to work for Red Angus breeders and RAAA members.” Tom Brink, RAAA CEO, is enthusiastic about Woodruff joining the team and said, “We are pleased to welcome Nolan to the Red Angus staff. He has ranch experience and a good understanding of both the cattle seedstock and commercial segments of the business. Add to that a positive attitude, willingness to learn and a favorable customer service orientation, and we know he will quickly become a positive contributor to our team." Woodruff began his duties in early January and can be reached by members at nolan@redangus.org or 940-387-3502 ext. 9. ■

The Right Sort for Sale Day Cooper Red Angus tops the market with data-driven approach by Laura Nelson for the American Red Angus Magazine

They’ve made a lot of good memories on sale day. Dick Cooper flips back through a retired sale catalog like an old family album, recalling what sold for how much and reading scribbled notes in the margins. Of course, they’ll never forget the record-breaking prices of 2015. “That was a fun one for everyone,” he laughed. Likewise, old bull sale catalogs hold memories of transitions and advances in their breeding goals.

36 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

Their 2017 Superior sale catalog might serve as a marked memory for the Cooper Red Angus family, too. In late August, Dick and Katie Cooper consigned the top 80 head of their commercial Red Angus heifers at the Big Horn Classic in Sheridan, Wyoming. The first lot of 40 heifers, with the option on a second lot of 40, heard the gavel drop at $200 per cwt for the 600pound females. They not only topped the sale that day, they were the highest selling heifers in their weight class across all Superior sales this summer. “That was a fun sale, too,” Coopers’ daughter, Jamie Hickey said. But it wasn’t particularly unusual. Howard Hawks has represented the Coopers’ cattle on Superior for more than two decades. He’s also a friend and neighbor who has watched their herd transition over the past two decades to all Red Angus.

Jamie Hickey, Dick and Katie Cooper

All Eyes on Them

While they’re investing in building better cattle to sell each year, Cooper Red Angus has also invested in getting more eyes on the commercial cattle they market.

“They’ve been topping that Sheridan sale for the past several years,” he said, attributing the quality and reputation of the bulls they’ve used in recent years.

They list their heifers on the Red Angus Stockyard for breeding stock and the steers go on the Red Angus FeederFax. They also publish listings on the Orion Beef Group web listings.

The correlation is simple. “The higher the quality, the higher the price,” Hawks said. But that doesn’t mean the process is simplistic.

“We’re just trying to get them everywhere we can. We want the most eyes on them that we can get,” Jamie Hickey said.

With 275 mothers on their fourth-generation ranch south of Billings, Montana, they’ve focused their genetic goals on raising and selling replacement-quality heifers that will stay at a future home for the long haul and make feeder calves that will top the markets, too.

That’s in addition to the work their Superior Livestock Auction representative, Howard Hawks, puts in to marketing the top of their replacement heifers. “Howard is a really good rep – he makes phones calls, pushing their info through before the sales and makes the right connections,” Hickey said. “We all want as many people as possible looking at them on sale day.” Last year, she created a website (www.cooperredangus.com) to feature their cattle, share information about the ranch and photos or videos of cattle they’ll have for sale. They fielded phone calls from states away inquiring about cattle and requesting more photos or videos. “They like the fact that it’s not just the 15 seconds you see on the Superior video. You can get a better view of the cows, what they look like every year,” Hickey said. “Every bid helps.” Over the summer, they got another unexpected phone call from an internet search that brought their website up. The Travel Channel was filming an episode of “Man v. Food” featuring several Billings, Montana, restaurants, and they were looking for a ranch location to film B-roll footage of cattle for the show. The show originally aired Sept. 11. American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018 37

The Right Sort for Sale Day

Selling on Data “It’s just fun selling what people are loving,” Cooper said. “It gives you a good feeling.” It also gives good incentive to keep getting better. The detail on their Superior sale listing leaves little to question why buyers would clamor for the Cooper cattle. They check all the standard boxes easily: detailed vaccinations, solid nutrition, handling and more. The comments section at the bottom of their listing reads: “Biggest and best from 155 heifers. 40 head gate-cut from top 80 head; replacement prospects, none kept, no brands.” But it’s the details in the breed type that defines what “the best” really means. Cooper began transitioning their traditionally Hereford herd to Red Angus not long after starting to sell on Superior. It didn’t take long in the observation seat of the video auction ring to notice a difference in bidding on calves with the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program yellow dangle tags.

Coopers focus on raising and selling quality replacement heifers that will stay in their future homes for many years.

The Right Sort for Sale Day “Just watching the sales, you can tell. The ones without the dangle tags just don’t sell as well,” Hickey said. They’ve added that age-and-source verification step for the past seven years, but wanted to keep adding detail to further differentiate their calves on sale day.

They took it another step this year by listing specific sires and performance expectations for those Red Angus bulls, including HerdBuilder and average GridMaster indices of those sires. With an average GridMaster ranking of 53.2, the listed heifers’ sires are in the top 1 percent of the breed for potential in marbling, yield grade and growth EPDs. Their HerdBuilder index sits in the top 10 percent of the breed at 142, which includes the indicators for stayability, heifer pregnancy and calving ease, along with indicators for the progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid, marbling, yield grade and growth EPDs. “They’ve done the extra work of using good bulls, so we want to inform those buyers and let them know what they can expect from those cattle,” Hawks said. “That information adds value. It’s those extra details we can put in there to promote their calves. When they have the GridMaster and that information, too, it gives me more power to get them sold.”

Coopers are particular in their sire selection and average in the top 1 percent for GridMaster and top 10 percent for HerdBuilder indices.

That data also boosts their steer mates that were marketed at Superior’s Big Sky Roundup, Cooper said. The steers were the second-high selling lot of their classification on their sale day at the Billings auction, too.

The Right Sort for Sale Day “We pay quite a bit of attention to those numbers when we’re buying bulls,” Cooper said. “We know when it comes time to sell and people are looking for cattle that will do well on a grid, they pay attention to it, too.”

So, they aim for three stars or higher on a five-star system gauging disposition, and then rely on above-average GridMaster and HerdBuilder numbers to bring in performance under the hide, too.

The Right Sort Paying attention to those numbers and finding the right combination that actually works on the ranch is a balancing act. Again, it’s simple, but not simplistic.

“We try to keep everything above average, and focus on the breeding traits so we can continue to raise females,” Cooper said. His heifers have out-sold his steers for the past eight years.

“It’s hard to find a bull that tops all categories, and if you do, sometimes you can’t afford them,” Cooper said. “So, you’ve got to give and take.” For their end goal of high-quality replacement heifers, he prioritizes buying bulls with above-average EPDs for stayability and heifer pregnancy rate, then calving ease and weaning and yearling weights. Then, there’s Residual Feed Intake (RFI) to consider, Maintenance Energy (ME) to consider, and disposition takes priority. “When they’re calm, it’s less stress on us, and on them when we’re working or vaccinating,” Hickey said. “They handle better, and I think that impacts how they do down the line, too.”

42 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

“Dick allows his front end to sell, which is where the premium comes from,” Hawks said. “When you have the right kind of cattle to work with and you get the right amount of sort room, we can do what we need to keep those buyers on the other end satisfied.” Leaving the heifers brand-free and natural helps, too, he pointed out. “No brand equals more money,” Hawks said. “They’re ready to go right to the ranch and be one-iron cattle, and people like that.” In the meantime, Cooper seeks out like-quality bred heifers to keep his herd fresh when needed, saving a year of time and money in development.

The Right Sort for Sale Day “I’d love to keep my own heifers someday, but we’re making good money doing it this way,” he said. Bringing Them Back For the second time in three years, those high-selling Superior replacement heifers went in to development with the same breeder in Nebraska. Cooper had an opportunity to visit this winter, and ended up buying eight of his own back. This isn’t the first time that’s happened. He jokes that he can’t help but get caught up in the excitement of a good auction, but there’s more to it than that. “I like to bring them home and see how they really do,” Cooper said. “I want to make sure they are doing what we think they should be.” They recently added another tool to the data collection shed to speed up that process. This fall, they collected their first blood samples on 25 coming 2-year-old heifers to submit for Red Navigator DNA testing. The genetic test will give a percentile ranking of the HerdBuilder and GridMaster indices and all EPD traits compared to the breed’s commercial heifer population.

The Red Navigator DNA test for commercial heifers provides another quantifying measurement to the quality of Coppers' heifers.

“We’ll be able to see if we’re missing something in them, or confirm how those numbers really stack up,” Cooper said. “It’ll let us know where we’re at so we can offer more information. It should just be another marketing tool to help us on sale day.” n

First Year is in the Barn by Patsy Krause, RAFI Fund Raiser

A year ago this month I was offered the opportunity to serve as the Fund Raiser for RAFI. My first response was, “What is a RAFI?” A year later I am proud to say that I know the Red Angus Foundation Inc. is a great organization poised to support the greatest breed in the world, and I am very humbled to be a part of it! The RAFI organization is fairly young in fundraising years. However, RAFI was well organized by the forefathers that had the insight to think far into the future. They identified three funds in which to manage donors’ contributions with respect to where we want the breed to go, while meeting the individual needs of the donors. The fund that RAFI operates out of is the General Fund that manages the general operations of the organization. The Research and Development fund, which looks to supporting the future improvements of the breed, is dedicated to funding research and development. Lastly, the Junior Fund supports education and scholarships for our future Red Angus leaders. It has been a very rewarding year of learning for me. My Red Angus roots run deep in our family ranch in northeast Montana. While I am not directly associated with our family ranch, it has been easy to see the impact of the Red Angus growth as it trickles down to our family operations. Most Monday mornings finds me on a staff conference call with other RAAA staff. These are 20 or so staff members all across the nation who work harmoniously as if they were across the office from one another. Their open communication and willingness to help each other solve problems or issues is uncanny! They all share your goal to keep the Red Angus breed growing to

become the premiere breed in the nation. While fundraising and charitable giving is a very personal decision, it is my hope that I can instill confidence in you that the RAAA and RAFI Boards and staff are working diligently for you. They share your love of the breed. With your contributions, hard work, perseverance and teamwork we can continue to move the Red Angus breed forward. While the barn door has closed on my first year with RAFI, a new door has opened to green pasture in the future. Call me to see how you can join RAAA and RAFI on our journey to the top! Directors may be nominated by the President of RAAA or the RAFI Board of Directors, or a nominating committee may be appointed by the RAFI Board President. Terms expire at the end of each calendar year and new terms begin following the annual meeting held each January. RAFI Board President Raymond Prescott and Board Member Ryan Ludvigson had completed their three-year terms and did not seek re-election. Red Angus Teams up With Kansas State University to Publish Valuable Data From Cow-Calf Veterinarians

Results from a detailed survey of cow-calf veterinarians compiling their recommendations on vaccine protocols, health management and production practice recommendations were recently published in The Professional Animal Scientist, the publication for the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. The study, “A Survey of Recommended Practices Made by Veterinary Practitioners to Cow-Calf Operations in the United States and Canada,” was initiated by the Red Angus Association of America in partnership with the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station, and provides valuable insight into how these practices can be best applied in individual cowherds. Gary Fike, RAAA director of commercial marketing and lead author on the publication, stated, “Our purpose in conducting this survey was to learn what practicing veterinarians nationwide are recommending to their clients. We know that the No. 1 cause of death loss in feedlots is

58 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

respiratory disease. Despite the progress that has been made in the animal health arena at the farm and ranch level, we still have a long journey ahead keeping calves healthy further down the supply chain. There are a number of factors that play into this issue, including weaning protocols, vaccine use and timing, and proper intervals for administering the preventative vaccines. We addressed the gamut of those issues through this survey.” Vaccination and health-related management are vitally important to maintaining a thriving herd and in getting calves ready to leave home, regardless of breed, age or location. Unsurprisingly, 99 percent of surveyed veterinarians recommended vaccinations for IBR at the first processing before weaning, 98 percent recommended BRSV and 96 percent recommended BVD Types 1 and 2. Those recommendations didn’t vary much when transitioning to post-weaning processing, as BVD Type 2 and IBR were recommended by 97 percent and BVD Type 1 and BRSV were both recommended by 96 percent of surveyed veterinarians.

Red Angus Teams up With Kansas State University to Publish Valuable Data From Cow-Calf Veterinarians Additionally, 99 percent of veterinarians recommended annual booster vaccinations for the cow herd, particularly for IBR, BVD Type 1 and 2, leptospirosis, PI-3 and BRSV. It’s important to note that the large majority of veterinarians recommended using modified-live-virus vaccines for processing calves, both pre-weaning (90 percent) and postweaning (93 percent). Results from the survey indicated that, in regards to production practices, a majority of veterinarians (83 percent) recommended that all family members and employees involved with the operation be trained in animal handling, and 75 percent of veterinarians recommended administering a growth implant at branding.

When it comes to managing and marketing calves, 60 percent of veterinarians recommended backgrounding or feeding calves before marketing, and 54 percent recommended that calves be bunk broke prior to marketing or shipping. The two most common weaning methods recommended by surveyed veterinarians were a specific number of days before selling (64 percent) and fence-line weaning (57 percent). "The value of this research is in its application in individual cow herds,” said Fike. “There is a plethora of research regarding recommendations from feedyard veterinarians, but much less at the cow-calf level, which is where a calf’s lifetime of good health must begin. We encourage producers to read the full report and then discuss the key findings with their veterinarians. n

Electronic Logging Device Will Add Hardship to Livestock Transporters by Trinity Lewis for American Red Angus Magazine

The nation’s regulatory burden has put extensive pressure on the ag industry. Its most recent form is the Electronic Logging Device mandate. For business owners in the ag industry the ELD Mandate is causing great concern. “These regulations are becoming an extreme burden on us as a small-business owner,” stated Dale Wood, owner of D/S Trucking. Wood and his wife Sherry are going on nearly 40 years in the trucking business. They’ve endured employee shortages during economic booms, toughed-out cattle market lulls and worked to grow in spite of the barriers that stood in their way. Their most recent challenge may not only squelch their business but it will impact anyone involved in any industry where products are shipped by trucks – cattle producers and just about every other American. The mandate requires an electronic device that tracks the hours the motor is running. Advocates of the mandate encourage usage of ELDs saying that they will take the place of traditional log books and help truckers to better comply with the Hours of Service restraint. Basically, when the hauler has had his truck running long enough, the ELD will shut the entire truck down, not taking into consideration livestock on board, weather risks and the distance between locations where cattle regularly have to be hauled. It’s a perfect approach – if the world were perfect. “The ELD mandate went into effect Dec. 18, 2017, for all drivers of commercial motor vehicles with a model year of 2000 and newer,” explained Lia Biondo, director of policy and outreach for the United States Cattlemen’s Association.

68 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

“Fortunately, the livestock industry was spared by a 90-day waiver of compliance as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration further investigates the impact of the ELD mandate on our industry.” Although a bureaucrat sitting behind an office desk might find this regulation a step to increasing safety, the trucker at the door of his cattle pot loading your calves knows there is much more at stake than can be written on paper or logged in a journal. Truckers have been logging hours for years and each year have had another piece of regulation added to the hours that they are allowed to haul. In the beginning the rules made sense. They helped to keep tired drivers – who had turned to drugs to keep them awake and functioning – off the road. Yet the rules remained lenient enough to keep the industry working efficiently. The new ELD mandate allows truckers to keep their trucks running for 14 hours and driving for 11 without anything else being considered. This causes truckers to keep trucking when, in the past, they may have pulled over for a 20-minute nap if they were tired. Under the new mandate they can’t risk wasting any of their allotted driving time. It will keep truckers driving on slick roads just to get to their destination before their clocks run out, instead of slowing down and taking care of their lives and the lives of their cargo. In essence, having an adverse effect to the original purpose of the mandate which was to increase safely.

Electronic Logging Device Will Add Hardship to Livestock Transporters “Working with a living, breathing animal is not always a predictable situation. Most of the time they have to be gathered and then sorted,” Wood explained. The ELD turns on as soon as a truck reaches 5 miles per hour and then keeps track of time for the next 14 hours. It logs the speed of the truck, routes, driving time, rest periods and more. It does not, however, account for heavy traffic, being 30 miles back on a dirt road on a muddy day, loading out of a pasture or being just an hour away from their destination when the clock runs out. Wood said that transporters often have to wait three or four hours longer than they expected due to these various circumstances. If this mandate goes into effect, producers will be haunted with high shrinkage rates and even death in livestock due to stress-induced illnesses. Not only is the welfare of livestock and truckers who haul livestock at stake, but so are their – and your – pocketbooks. “Across the U.S., the mandate will cost up to $2 billion to implement according to research by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association,” Biondo explained. “In the beef industry, it’s nearly impossible to calculate the amount of profit lost for everyone along the production chain. As cattle stand longer on trucks, shrinkage and mortality rates increase, costing producers.”

70 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

Biondo continued, “As long-distance haulers are forced to the side of the road when they are out of driving time, they lose both time and money waiting for their clocks to restart on a 10hour mandatory break. And as consumers find delayed shipments of their favorite protein at the meat counter, retail prices increase. It’s a lose-lose-lose for the livestock industry and consumers.”

Electronic Logging Device Will Add Hardship to Livestock Transporters Wood said the cost is a tough blow but the negative impact on drivers changes the playing field, too. “Due to the decreased hours we will be able to drive, extra drivers will also be needed to haul the livestock. There is already a shortage of drivers, but then to have a knowledgeable trucker with cow-sense is hard to find. Just because they know how to drive a truck does not mean they can haul livestock. The moving motion with live cattle on board is different from hauling a stable load.” With small trucking companies and leaders from various sectors standing against the mandate, one may wonder who helped this law take flight. The legislation was lobbied for extensively by the American Trucking Association, the national trade association for the mega-carrier trucking companies. Many of the large companies find it in their best interests to hire new drivers and find it favorable that they be watched closely by an ELD. “They are siding with a onesize-fits-all approach,” said Wood. “The problem is that it doesn’t fit everybody. In fact, it only hurts most of us.” The Woods have taken it upon themselves to do all in their power to stop the mandate. “We wrote a letter to President Trump and visited with Wyoming Representative Cheney with our concerns of the effects the E-logs will have on our

Grill’s 14th Annual

trucking business. The people who are making these regulations do not have the knowledge of what it takes to transport livestock, the various situations that occur transporting cattle, and the distances that are involved with this industry. The only thing that I know that would stop this, is for everyone to contact their Congress people as they oversee the FMCSA. This is where all these regulations are coming from.” Biondo and the USCA echoed the same actions. “Reach out to your members of Congress and let them know just how important this issue is to your livelihood. Congress is hearing from advocates that claim businesses need to be squeezed by regulations in the name of consumer safety. They are not hearing from rural and agricultural America,” she said. “Check-in with your members of Congress to see how they are addressing this issue for their constituents. It’s as easy as dialing into the Capitol switchboard at 202-2243121.” Agriculture advocates have suggested that if the mandate cannot be stopped completely, a good compromise would be to allow drivers to divide their driving time so that they do not have to drive continuously in poor conditions just to appease the ticking clock. ■

Top Dollar Angus Yielded Top Dollar Payouts in 2017 by Kenny Stauffer, Top Dollar Angus® General Manager

$ ®

With all the hustle and bustle of Christmas and the New Year behind us, it’s time to begin preparation and planning for 2018. Top Dollar Angus is a great way to start your Marketing and Genetic Certification Plan for 2018. Top Dollar Angus had another very successful year with our marketing premiums for high-end carcass and growth cattle. Top Dollar Angus-certified cattle ended 2017 with an average premium paid of $32 over market price per head. I want to highlight and recognize some of our “Top $” success stories for 2017: • Congratulations to Craig & Bo Fanning and family from Wauneta, Nebraska, on the feeding and carcass results achieved with their Top Dollar Angus qualified heifers from earlier this year. Fanning’s 204 head of high-percentage Angus heifers went on feed at 813 pounds in western Kansas on Jan. 19 and were shipped and harvested on May 31 after only 132 days on feed. Health was great and final death loss came in under 1 percent. These heifers gained an average of 3.36 pounds per day and converted feed to gain at 6.14 to 1 on a dry-matter basis. Their overall cost of gain was in the lower half of the range on all cattle closed out that week at the same feedyard (not bad for heifers!). Plus, Fanning’s Top Dollar Angus heifers graded 96.6 percent Prime and Choice, with 52.4 percent CAB carcasses. Their overall grid premium totaled $71 per head above average market price. Great work, Fanning family, for producing such an outstanding set of heifers! These heifers were fed at Kinsley Feeders in Kinsley, Kansas. • Congratulations to Bryan Switzer and family from Bucklin, Missouri. Few cattle can earn a sizable grid premium when the Choice-Select spread is only $2.48 per cwt, but Bryan Switzer’s cattle are far above industry averages. They earned $67.21 per head above the average market price when harvested and priced via the U.S. Premium Beef grid on Feb. 20, 2017. These Top Dollar Angus steers had outstanding quality grades, with 98.8 percent Choice and higher, 6.5 percent Prime, and 65.6 percent Certified Angus Beef. Their dressing percentage was superior as well (65.15 percent), adding even more to the bottom line. The base fed market price was $119.44 per cwt (live weight basis) the week these 78 head of Top Dollar Angus steers were sold out of a Kansas feedyard. Their

final price, grid premiums included, was $124.29 per cwt. Feedyard performance on these cattle is noteworthy as well. Placed on feed at 636 pounds last August, these steers gained 3.83 pounds per day and converted feed to gain at 5.65 to 1 on a dry-matter basis. • Congratulations to DeLong Ranches from Winnemucca, Nevada. They recently had a group of heifers that achieved outstanding closeout data with 18 percent Prime; with another 57 percent achieving upper two-thirds Choice that received the Verified Red Angus/Tyson premium. With a total Choice or better of 95 percent. They had only one Yield Grade 4 out of 61 head, 98 percent YG3 or better. The Choice-Select spread was somewhat narrow (less than $7 per cwt) when these cattle were sold, but they still earned a solid grid premium of $50 per head. These cattle were fed by Frank Wedel in Leoti, Kansas. • Mill Iron Triangle Ranch sold 90 heifers at 600 pounds in June with an average per-head premium over the market for that week of $126.27. This premium price was compared to over 1,000 head represented and sold on Superior Livestock’s Big Sky Round Up. They also topped the market with their 575-pound heifers that same day, with a $99.64 average perhead premium for their weight and kind. • Beggs Cattle Co. sold 100 heifers at 870 pounds in June with an average per-head premium over the market for that week of $101.33. This was a direct-trade load with Crossroads Cattle Co. and was compared to regional sales and USDA weighted averages for Oklahoma and Texas. • Thompson Angus sold 85 steers at 726 pounds in October with an average per-head premium over the market for that week of $100.52. These were sold at Napoleon Livestock and were compared to all cattle sold that day in their weight and kind and for the entire USDA weighted average for North Dakota. • Diamond E Cattle Co., Randy John, sold 70 steers at 750 pounds in October with an average per-head premium over the market for that week of $97.62.

Top Dollar Angus Yielded Top Dollar Payouts in 2017 This was a direct-trade load with Crossroads Cattle Co. and were compared to all regional sales and USDA weighted average reports for Nebraska. • John Hester sold 130 steers at 817 pounds in May with an average per-head premium over the market for that week of $95.72. These steers did exceptionally well when you consider that this comparison included over 8,500 head of steers sold that week between Superior Livestock Auction, Western Video Market, Torrington Livestock and USDA reports from Nebraska, Wyoming and Kansas. • Toedtli Ranch sold 74 steers at 650 pounds in July with an average per-head premium over the market for that week of $92.33. These steers topped the Superior Livestock Market, Week in the Rockies, and were compared to over 2,500 head in Region 2 with a weight range between 645 to 650 pounds. This was the only Genetically Certified - Top Dollar Angus group in this comparison. The Toedtli calves surpassed all other value-added groups such as Verified Natural, NHTC, GAP and other breed association verification brands that the other represented cattle had attached to them.

mium over the market for that week of $71.13. What was even more impressive was these steers were compared to over 11,400 head sold that week between CCV and Nebraska and Wyoming USDA weighted averages and were the only Top Dollar Angus – Genetically Certified cattle. They missed topping the 11,414 head sold by $0.31 and came in a very respective second place – a pretty impressive sale! As you can see, the Top Dollar Angus marketing program and concept works. Whether you are a feeder or producer, the Top Dollar Angus – Genetic Program is adding value to our certified cattle. Our buyers are willing to pay more for your high-end genetic cattle because it works for them as well. This is not a one-sided program that only benefits the producer by getting paid more for their cattle. The feeders want our Top Dollar Angus cattle because, as you saw in the recaps above, it works for them as well and helps them take out some of the guess work. Assist yourself or your customers by helping them get their herds enrolled. You all can start taking advantage of these types of premiums as well. ■

Performance you can count on!

What Feeders Want: Feeding the Right Genetics by Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Communications Coordinator with assistance from Gary D. Fike, RAAA Director of Commercial Marketing

It’s easy to imagine raising calves that will garner premiums on the grid, however, execution is often much more difficult. A wide variety of factors are in play – genetics, nutrition, vaccination protocols, performance and marketing. All of which can be boiled down to one word: management. Good management on the home ranch can mean the difference between a pen of calves with all the right pieces, or selling “just another pen” of calves at the local sale barn. John Schroeder, manager of Darr Feedlot in Cozad, Nebraska, attests that genetics, flesh, frame and weigh-up are all important variables when buying feeder cattle. However, he warned that cattle with good genetics can be fed incorrectly, which essentially takes most or all of the valueadded potential out of them. Schroeder calls that the “goody” and further explains that each of those factors have their own value. “We put a value on the combination of all those factors

100 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

and we look at good seedstock producers and try to chase their customers’ cattle.” Tom Jones, manager of Hy-Plains Feedyard in Montezuma, Kansas, agreed wholeheartedly about pursuing good genetics and buying from customers who buy their bulls from high-quality seedstock producers. “We know the history on those cattle. We bring those guys in to talk and discuss the data. In the past, many of our customers that partnered with us on cattle with good genetics have transitioned to owning 100 percent of the pen, because they know what those cattle will do. We can’t feed quality into the cattle, so known genetics are the real deal.”

What Feeders Want: Feeding the Right Genetics As Schroeder warned feeding is a critical component of raising good calves to fit the needs of the feedlot, and that plays into two much larger, and extremely important pieces of feeding cattle – average daily gain (ADG) and feed to gain (F/G). At Hy-Plains, Jones searches for cattle that can gain rapidly and efficiently while reaching a heavy out-weight. He encourages producers to remember the old saying “pounds pay the bills.” “We weigh the cattle and know what they will do. We are watching consumption and we’ll make a judgment call on whether or not to give them another implant.” Jones attests to the fact that the magic is in the margins. “Just buying cattle out of the sale barn and hoping to make them work is hard to do. If we know genetics of the pen, that helps a lot. If we can grow them at a slower rate and bring them in bigger, we will. It’s all about the margin. Bringing in weaned calves that are fleshy and have gotten fat too early will lead to poor performance in the feedyard. If they get too much starch too early, feed conversion and gain are worsened.“

102 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

Scott Keeling, owner of Keeling Cattle Feeders in Hereford, Texas, agreed that margins play a large part in the puzzle of what kind of cattle he’ll buy. “ADG and F/G are critically important. We can have big gains or conversions, but it’s ultimately the cost of the feed that makes the difference.”

No matter what your Adversity... 5L Genetics have probably seen it. Range Fires - Droughts - Blizzards...

5L bulls come from a cow herd that “winters out”, some 70 miles from Ranch Headquarters with only supplemental protein. Few cows summer within 100 miles of the ranch and over their life will experience a variety of production environments, from the high elevation of West Yellowstone to the arid plains of Lame Deer, MT.

In fact, the toughest thing for a 5L cow to survive is the annual competition from our next generation of replacement females!

What Feeders Want: Feeding the Right Genetics Schroeder further explained the ever-changing nature of the cattle feeding business. “You have to have cattle that are within one standard deviation of these variables to make feeding cattle work. You’re only as good as the data. We’ve had to break data down to 50-pound increments to determine the average during a certain quarter, so it depends on the time of the year and season. Sometimes a 4.0 ADG is a rock star but other times, when we bring in a 9-weight yearling in August and he only gains 4.0 but the mean is 4.9, he’s outside the standard deviation and is less than ideal.” Schroeder explained that seasonal tendencies can have a big impact on beef demand and may influence some producers’ timeline on when they market their calves. “Choice-Select spread is the widest in May and June, and narrowest in February and March. If you are feeding for larger premiums, you should set your cattle up for those times of the year. When there is a narrow Choice-Select spread, pounds become more important if producers are not targeting for those higher quality markets.”

104 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018

Jones agreed that maturity and genetics have a lot of impact on the ability to grade. He adds, “We’ve got to get more and more of these cattle into the Prime grade.”

What Feeders Want: Feeding the Right Genetics

It’s important for cow-calf producers to understand the thought process and strategy behind buying feeder cattle in order to better prepare their calves for the feedyard and, ultimately, to be more profitable through the finishing phase. Consistently good genetics paired with good herd management can lay a solid foundation for producing ideal feeder calves. Taking heed of these feedyard managers’ insight and advice can lead to improved performance for cow-calf producers wishing to put the right package of calves together. There will always be room for improvement, and learning from industry leaders can yield big results for those willing to take on the challenge. Nobody wants to sell an average set of calves, but it takes planning and work to reach the top tier. To sum up “What Feeders Want” – find and buy those good genetics (superior bulls) and be consistent. Work with your veterinarian to initiate a solid vaccination and backgrounding program, avoid problems that come from single-trait selection, and be wary of adding too much condition to your calves before feedlot delivery as that will put a dent in feeding performance. This article is the second in a two-part series focused on sharing insight into what makes calves attractive to feedyard operators. Read the first part in the January issue of the American Red Angus Magazine. ■ 106 American Red Angus Magazine ■ February 2018
