You will find that there is truly a difference in the type of bulls we use in our program. We breed cattle based on how they perform in the real world and are maternally focused and profit driven. We pay close attention to each cow family and how they perform against one another. We structure our breeding program off balance, use multiple-trait selection, and understand the importance of having the right type of cow that thrives in a forage-based environment.

The other night after my off-farm job, we went to the corn field to rake and bale stalks before the nasty “s” word rolled into our country. It was Oct. 24 and we were expecting our first “winter snow event” in a couple of days. The meteorologist said we would get a dusting of snow, but our northern and western neighbors would see significant amounts. It gave me a sense of urgency to finish up the most important things before the ground freezes and we get that free concrete for a few months. I grabbed my old jacket and headed to the tractor, but it wasn’t just any old jacket. It was the one I’ve been saving and don’t wash because it might fall apart, and I sure don’t wear it out in public. It is not pretty by any means, but it’s one of the last remaining things that reminds me of my dad. As I climbed into the cab of that old 4030 John Deere, the smell from years of dust, dirt and oil mixed with a few teardrops, washed over me. I was sitting in a tractor, similar to the one I grew up learning to drive, and the smell inside that cab reminded me of my dad. It was no coincidence that the song “Good Times Go by Too Fast” by Dylan Scott started playing. Going down memory lane chasing cornstalks let me think about how much my dad taught me growing up. We wrenched on tractors, changed oil and tires, and were always fixing or welding on equipment. We learned about nutrition and vaccinations for our livestock and how to build or repair fences. I know I forgot half of what he taught me but there is not a day that goes by that I don’t use something I learned from him. We helped with all the cattle and sheep chores, and he instilled a sense of urgency to take care of the stock every day, but especially if the weather was going to change for the worse. I never knew that other teenage girls didn’t go to the equipment dealer and order up the exact parts they needed to fix a broke-down piece of equipment. I walked into feed stores, vet clinics, seed dealers – wherever I could knowledgably secure what my dad needed – and brought home supplies after school. There was never a wasted trip to town. I thought of all the good conversations, and the hard ones, we had in that old John Deere tractor. We baled hay late into the night, and played silly, made-up games to pass the time. I guess that is what we had to do before cell phones! I thought about how my youngest son never got a chance to meet my dad, yet there are so many strong similarities in his personality and his interests. I watched as the sun set with the most vibrant colors, accompanied by some nasty dark clouds to the north. I waited to turn on the lights of that old tractor until I absolutely couldn’t see because I was soaking it all in – the sights, sounds and smells – and for just a little while I was transported back to the days that shaped me into the person I am today. I thanked the Lord for a beautiful night and asked Him if the good times could just slow down a little bit.

I pray that every one of you slows down and savors that time with those you love most this holiday season, and that you make many more precious memories with loved ones. If you ever need a coffee our pot is always on if you can brave the winter weather! I wish each one of you the Merriest Christmas and the absolute best New Year! // RED ANGUS Magazine | December 2023

Many of us care little about what is “trending” on the internet. However, things trending upward in the beef industry are worth our attention. Odds are good these trending factors will show up on our doorstep sooner or later and may bring opportunity our way. In attempt to get a heading on some important, industry-influencing factors, we recently conducted a survey with RAAA marketing team members. Keep in mind our team travels the industry extensively, continually engaging with producers from all segments – from cow-calf to packer – and across a wide range of geographies. They have eyes and ears in a lot of places, and cross paths with many people in the agribusiness community that support cattle production. Their opinions and perspectives are worth hearing. We asked them to score seven different beef industry-influencing factors as to whether each will become LESS, THE SAME or MORE important in five years. In other words, are these factors trending lower (decreasing impact), sideways (equal impact) or upward (increasing impact). Their answers were converted to numerical scores, with LESS = 0, SAME = 2.5 and MORE = 5.0. Average scores are shown in the accompanying table. Higher scores suggest greater influence in the years ahead.

Industry-Influencing Factor Score* Production, Health, and Genetic Data 5.0 Technology Supporting All Segments 5.0 Industry Relationships 4.7 Cow-Calf Marketing Sophistication 4.5 Segments Cooperating 4.1 Coordinated Beef Supply Chains 4.1 Buyers More Discriminating 3.4 *Max Score = 5

Interestingly, not a single factor on the list scored below 3.0. All lean toward the side of becoming more important in the beef business. Below is a brief review of each factor, ordered from highest to lowest score.

Production, Health and Genetic Data – 5.0 The RAAA marketing team agrees that this type of data is becoming more important. Feeder cattle buyers want more of this information, and sellers do well to provide it in the description of the calves or yearlings they are marketing. The price discovery process gets smarter when more objective data and information is provided. Producers of cattle with the best production practices, health programs and genetics will benefit from this trend. Technology Supporting All Segments – 5.0 Red Angus Magazine readers, no doubt, would have scored this factor the same. It is apparent to everyone that the use of technology is increasing throughout the beef business, maybe especially in the cow-calf sector. Technology is how we manage data and make better decisions. We will use more – not less – going forward. Industry Relationships – 4.7 Even with larger amounts of technology and data, relationships remain critical. The marketing team believes they will become even more important in the future. For commercial cow-calf producers, relationships extend in all directions – toward

their seedstock partners, veterinarian, nutritionist, marketing agent, cattle backgrounder and feedlot manager. Maybe even all the way to packers and retailers. Cow-Calf Marketing Sophistication – 4.5 This is happening already and is likely to continue. Commercial cow-calf producers are becoming better at marketing their feeder calves in any number of ways. They are starting to understand how to use data and the inherent attributes of their cattle to create positive differentiation on sale day.

“Technology is how we manage data and make better decisions. We will use more – not less – going forward.”

Segments Cooperating and Coordinated Supply Chains – 4.1 There is substantial overlap in these two factors, which is likely why they scored the same. Cooperation or coordination does not mean integration by ownership. It does mean working more closely together in voluntary relationships that produce mutual benefits for everyone involved. Buyers More Discriminating – 3.5 Even though this factor scored lowest, our responding group generally believes feeder cattle buyers will become more careful and discriminating in their purchases during the next five years. Thanks to all members of the RAAA marketing team for helping us see what’s trending in the beef business. You have given us a lot to think about! //

Commercial cattlemen are becoming better at marketing their feeder cattle – using data and the inherent attributes of their cattle to create positive differentiation on sale day.

‘Twas the night before Christmas at Green Mountain Red Angus! There was a calm in the air, and no one was anxious. It was cold in Montana, the ground covered in snow The thermometer read a bone-numbing 20 below. The cows were brushed up and the feedlots were bedded The animals thought they knew where this night was headed The herd sires and horses were fed extra hay to stay warm And the barn cats and cow dogs were all asleep in the barn. When way across the field everyone heard such a noise That it woke all things living from dreams full of joys. The ranchers woke up and jumped from their beds With visions ‘The cows were out!’ stuck in their heads! The moon was full and there was frost all around The coldness of the air amplified all the sound. All the critters and ranchers looked for the sight To see what awaited them in the cold of the night.

After all of the presents were spread all around Santa hopped on his sled and popped the reins nice and loud Over the hill! To the gate! The bob-sled did fly! When what did we see from the corner of our eye? Some new Carhartts for Dad, some woolly chaps for Tom, A new cowboy hat for Jim, and fancy boots for Mom. Katie got her wish, she wanted for years A brand-new baby boy brought her to tears. All was right at the ranch on this cold winter night We were blessed beyond measure and things were just right. We thanked the Lord up above, for gifts beyond measure, To be the keepers of the land and livestock we treasure. Then we heard from a distance, a loud hearty shout And what Santa yelled out was never in doubt! Even though the old fellow was plumb out of sight, We hear …

“Merry Christmas to all, And to all a Good Night!”

A plump man in a cowboy hat all dressed in red Being pulled by draft horses, in a green bob-sled! The snow flew to the sides as they came to a stop And a sack of rolled oats fell from the hay at the top. We guessed who it might be, but no one said a word All were surprised that Santa would remember our herd Bales of hay for the cows, and sweet oats for each horse Warm milk for the cats and dog bones, of course!

by Lauren Weingardt, Value-Added Programs Specialist

The end of the year always seems to bring a time of reflection. A time to review and see if the results are something to be proud of or if there is room for improvement – not only in your personal life, but also in your operation. The year 2023 is a year to reflect for the marketing department. It was a year of learning, educating and promoting. Here is our year in a short review. A Year of Learning Many of us learned new roles within the Association and about our new team members. The marketing department brought on five new staff members, including three commercial marketing specialists, one value-added programs specialist and the director of commercial marketing. Everyone on the team brings experience and knowledge to the Association and is looking forward to sharing that with your operations in the year to come. A Year of Educating Since joining the RAAA team, I have learned the importance of educating producers on the benefits of our value-added programs and the different tag types that we have to offer. One of those tag types is the Electronic Identification Device or an EID. Some of the benefits to EIDs are: 1. Traceability, which increases your chances to receive more carcass and grid information. 2. Higher retention rate compared to a dangle tag. It is less likely to be cut out during feed yard processing. 3. EIDs are easy to apply and more cost effective compared to five years ago. 4. Packers and feedlots are more likely to purchase calves with an EID rather than a dangle tag. A Year of Promoting As always, it is the role of RAAA to promote the Red Angus breed and the wonderful producers who make the breed what it is today. The marketing team traveled across the country to more than 87 events including ranch visits, video sales, industry events and the National Red Angus Convention. As one might say, “boots were on the ground.” So now that we have had time to reflect, review and prepare for our next year; has your operation had time to do the same? When reflecting and reviewing, you might ask: What did the operation do to be successful? Did the ranch utilize any value-added programs for your calves and did you see an advantage when they hit the auction block? Was there success in utilizing a certain tag type this year, compared to years past? While looking back to see what the ranch did to be successful, are you also looking ahead to prepare for success again in 2024? What does the ranch need to do to prepare for 2024? Do you have enough feed?

Red Angus Announces New Director of Commercial Marketing Kelly Smith, West Plains, Missouri, has been named the director of commercial marketing for the Red Angus Association of America. In this role, Smith will lead the advancement of RAAA commercial marketing and value-added programs. Smith brings a wealth of industry expertise, with more than 35 years of experience in animal nutrition. He has worked in various sales and management roles for Purina Mills, Adisseo USA Inc., and most recently, Hubbard Feeds. He earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture business from the University of Arkansas and began his career as the nation16

al field sales representative at the American Red Poll Association. “We could not be more excited to have Kelly join us at Red Angus. He has a combination of cattle business experience and expertise that is hard to find. Plus, he is a true leader, a man of integrity and enjoyable to work with,” said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. “Kelly understands the seedstock business and has spent years working with commercial cow-calf producers in many parts of the country. He is a great addition to our already strong marketing team at Red Angus.”

RED ANGUS Magazine | December 2023

As the director of commercial marketing, Smith will promote the Red Angus breed to seedstock producers, commercial ranchers, industry partners, feedlots, packers and consumers.

He will also serve on the leadership team for RAAA to develop effective programs and assist with implementation of the breed’s strategic plan. //

Genetic Merit Pricing Task Force Begins Work on Feeder Cattle Market Price discovery in the feeder cattle market rarely includes genetic information. Almost nothing is known about the genetics of 98% of feeder cattle being sold on a weekly basis. That is unfortunate and it holds the industry back, because genetics control approximately one-third of growth, efficiency and carcass results. Enter the Genetic Merit Pricing Task Force, a coalition of 32 producers from all industry segments assembled to help the industry accelerate toward widespread use of genetic information in pricing feeder cattle. Ken Odde, Ph.D., former Kansas State University animal science department head and group facilitator, believes the Genetic Merit Pricing Task Force has a critical mission that can help make all industry segments more efficient and prosperous. “If you look at crops, pork, poultry, dairy and virtually all other agricultural products, genetics are heavily emphasized,” Odde explained. “Yet in the beef industry, we trade millions of feeder cattle and calves annually, while knowing next to nothing about their genetics. Without objective genetic information on potential growth rate, feed efficiency, marbling and other key traits, we cannot accurately project how a given group of cattle will perform or how valuable their carcasses will be. That lack of genetic information creates a big hole in our ability to price cattle according to their true value.” Task force members represent some of the nation’s brightest and most experienced cattle producers, marketers, backgrounders and feeders the industry has to offer. (See Appendix 1 for a complete list.) Their charge is to help bring objec-

tive genetic information into the price discovery process for feeder cattle and calves, which ultimately means more sellers offering this type of information to prospective buyers, and then buyers effectively using this information as they bid on and buy cattle. The GMP Task Force also has a large and growing list of supporting industry organizations. (See Appendix 2.) “We are pleased with the broad-based industry support we have received thus far,” Odde said. “We are in conversation with many other key cattle organizations at the current time. Look for our list of supporters to grow significantly in the months ahead. Once people understand the importance of genetic information becoming actively used in the feeder cattle and calf markets, they quickly recognize it is the right direction for improving the beef business.” The GMP Task Force held its first face-to-face meeting Nov. 2 in Denver. Quarterly in-person meetings will continue for approximately 15 to 18 months, with additional virtual meetings held as needed to supplement the group’s discussions and work. “When you consider the success objective genetic information brought to our seedstock market over the past several decades, you get some idea what could happen in the feeder cattle market,” said Tom Brink, Red Angus Association of America CEO and one of the GMP Task Force founders. “Industry-wide genetic improvement will progress more rapidly when genetic information is part of the price discovery process, and that benefits everyone from ranch to consumer.” //

The Work Behind the Most-Favored Female

by Ryan Starkey, DNA Customer Service Specialist Red Angus females remain an ideal cow for producers due to their excellent maternal characteristics. But are you using the tools available to keep the best cows in your herd? After all, they do make up 50% of the genetics your calves receive. The DNA department has two programs specifically designed for females to get you, the producer, the most information to make the best mating and culling decisions. Red Navigator The first program offered is Red Navigator. This program is specifically for commercial Red Angus-influenced cows. When submitting cows to Red Navigator you will receive information back regarding their rank among the breed in EPD traits. This will help determine at which traits your females are either excelling or falling short. Parentage verification is also included in the Red Navigator testing if your bulls have DNA already on file. Red Navigator is a great way to see where your commercial females rank amongst the breed as a whole. The price for Red Navigator is $22 per female. Red Cow Rally The second female specific program offered is Red Cow Rally which is for registered females only. The Rally program testing is equivalent to the GGP-LD test which is a 100k panel. Rally is $22 per female compared to the GGP-LD test which is $50 per head. To qualify for Red Cow Rally, you need to have 90% of the females in your active inventory genotyped – previously tested animals will count towards your 90%. If you have any questions about your eligibility for this program, please contact the DNA department at dna@redangus.org and we can tell you if you already qualify or how many females would need to be tested in order to meet the 90% requirement. To see more information on Red Cow Rally please visit the website at https://redangus.org/red-cow-rally/ where you can view additional information as well as the Red Cow Rally order form. Both of these female programs have specific order forms that need to be filled out when submitting samples. Both order forms can be found on the redangus.org website. Please contact the DNA department at dna@redangus.org or 940-3873502, Ext. 8, with any questions you may have. //

“A Different Kind of Test” Tis the season for Metaphors As you may recall, last month we showed you a picture of a bull taking a test and we hope that our message of low input bulls and the value that can bring to your operation made sense. This month we focus on two pieces of wood. Notice the old growth has 60 rings and the new growth only has 16. The old one is more dense and much stronger. This metaphor is a great testimony to the way that we feel our bulls are being grown and how they will adapt positively in your environment.

In saying this we do not insist that this is the right way to raise bulls and that others are doing it wrong. This is us just saying that this is how we love to do it! And so far, our customers are quite pleased. Stay tuned next month for what we feel is the most important part of our operation…

Breed Improvement

The Yellow Notepad: The Original Data Collection Method by Lindsay Upperman, Ph.D., Director of Breed Improvement Data collection - two words that can cause a variety of emotions. Some producers look forward to the days of entering data into the database, while other producers dread the days of opening the Excel sheet, preferring the days of pen and paper. No matter which scenario you may relate to more, there are multiple avenues to submit data to the Red Angus Association of America. However, when collecting data there are certain guidelines that ensure accurate data is both captured and entered for the genetic evaluation to estimate the best selection tools – EPDs – to utilize within your operation. Collecting Phenotypes Let’s review some of the procedures that should be taken when collecting various phenotypes; especially for weight traits, scores or even heifer pregnancy. Birth Weight Birth weight should be collected within 24 hours of birth. In order to collect an accurate measurement of birth weight on a calf, a quality digital scale is the best option to determine effective EPDs. Although scales are the preferred method in collecting birth weights, other options such as hoof tapes can be utilized as well. Weight estimates should never be recorded. Foot and Leg Scores Foot and leg scores should be collected on entire contemporary groups for all yearling bulls and heifers. Annually, mature cows and herd sires can be phenotyped as well. To stay consistent with scoring, having one person score each animal’s worst leg or hoof will keep scoring similar across a contemporary group as well as over several generations. Other preferred factors include good lighting, a hard, dry surface in order to better observe the feet, and even having limited restraint in order to appropriately view the animal’s angles.

Heifer Pregnancy The submission of heifer exposure inventory data is based on the AI/natural sire ID and the date of AI service or the breeding season start and end dates. Furthermore, information such as management groups or changes, as well as keeping the herd inventory up to date with proper disposal codes being reported, is essential. Mature Cow Weight Mature cow weight should be collected on the date the calf is weaned and taken annually. In order to collect an accurate measurement of mature cow weight, a quality digital or mechanical scale should be utilized. The weight should be recorded in pounds and rounded to the nearest whole number. Again, weight estimates should never be recorded. The general idea when collecting phenotypes is to keep procedures similar across the cattle, especially within a contemporary group. This will help to eliminate any potential errors that may cause discrepancies in the data reporting process. Yet, there are factors, such as weather, that tend to be out of our control. Thus, focusing on those factors you can control, such as timing, zeroing the digital scale, or even double checking the correct birth weight that was written down, is critical. Now that we have gone over the guidelines for collecting data on various traits, the final step is to submit the data. This can be done on REDSPro – the RAAA database – or by filling out the forms and mailing them to the RAAA office. Either way, collecting the data doesn’t hold much meaning until the data is submitted to RAAA to then be utilized in the IGS or CSU genetic evaluations. Once submitted and the data is run through the weekly genetic evaluations, better EPD estimates and increases in accuracy will be determined for the given calf crop. In conclusion, data collection and submission are a crucial part of the beef industry, especially if genetic progress is one of your operation’s goals. Whether collecting birth weights, heifer pregnancy data or even foot and leg scores, there is a method to collect the most accurate data. Keeping these guidelines in mind and working to create the best protocols for your operation will ensure the most accurate data is being submitted at RAAA. With that said, I would like to leave a final note. A big THANK YOU to all of those cattlemen and women who filled out the phenotypes on those yellow notepads or Excel sheets that enable the data collection method! We sincerely appreciate all your efforts! //

Making Their Mark

Women Entrepreneurs Use Voices, Technology to Help Revolutionize Agriculture by Macey Mueller, for the Red Angus Magazine One Sunday evening in February 2022 Natalie Kovarik and Tara Vander Dussen found themselves buried in hundreds of pages of copy for a new online agricultural advocacy course and community they had recently created. The program, called Elevate Ag, was gaining traction, and despite the long hours the duo was already committing to helping farmers and ranchers use social media as a marketing tool, they both knew another opportunity was beckoning – a podcast to complement and help promote the course. “We were pouring ourselves into developing this course – working before our kids got up and after our kids went to bed – and neither one of us wanted to say out loud that we wanted to start a podcast because it was just going to add one more thing to our full plates,” Vander Dussen said. “But our approach to business – and one of the reasons our partnership has worked so well – is very much ‘build your ship at sea,’ so we each jumped in with both

feet and by that next Saturday, we had flown to Dallas to record nine episodes of a podcast.” Through a few twists and turns, that leap of faith eventually led the women to rebrand their endeavor last December into the “Discover Ag” podcast, a weekly look at trending topics in the agricultural and food spaces, broken down and discussed through a millennial female perspective. In just a year, the podcast regularly ranks in the Top 30 on Apple’s U.S. Food Podcast chart and has been as high as No. 1. Although Kovarik and Vander Dussen both grew up on cattle and dairy operations, respectively, neither ever thought they’d end up on a farm or ranch. They were each pursuing other careers – Kovarik was a pharmacist and Vander Dussen an environmental consultant for dairy farms. But as fate would have it, both women are now directly involved in production agriculture – Kovarik on a cow-calf

In addition to their jobs off the farm, the two were also each building their online presence as they shared their agricultural stories on social media. In fact, Kovarik said the two met online “in a very millennial way” through a group of fellow females passionate about advocating for agriculture.

Making Their Mark “We connected within that group and then started forming a friendship outside of it, which eventually turned into business ventures together,” she said. “Social media is a powerful tool for sharing information, but it’s also great for bringing together like-minded people from hundreds of miles away.” While the two initially found value in producing a podcast that helped farmers and ranchers tell their stories, they discovered their true passion lies in personally advocating for agriculture, and they made the decision to “pivot” and create “Discover Ag.” “Our husbands teased that our favorite word for 2022 was ‘pivot,’ but I really think the ability to identify what’s working and what’s not is important to being a successful entrepreneur,” Vander Dussen said. “Natalie always says, ‘clarity comes through action,’ and much of this journey has been about being open to making changes as they are laid on our hearts.” “We realized we wanted to use our voices for something deeper,” Kovarik added. “Tara and I both got into social media to speak out for the industry, so rebranding the podcast to get back to our roots made sense to us.” “Discover Ag” is intentionally aimed at a wide audience. Food-curious consumers can learn more about the realities of food and farming, while producers can tune in to stay wellversed on the issues affecting their peers across the vast agriculture industry.

34

RED ANGUS Magazine |

Kovarik said among all the social media platforms she uses to discuss agriculture, podcasting is her favorite for making connections with followers as she and Vander Dussen can take deeper dives into important topics. “A lot of social media has trended towards shorter and quicker – how much can you fit in a nine second reel and how much can you shove in a tweet,” she said. “A podcast is more conducive to having long-form, more nuanced conversations, and I think that’s been lacking in the food and farming space.” While they both carry years of experience in agriculture, the women are both the first to admit they are not experts on every issue, and as such, their goal is to follow their own curiosity as they research different viewpoints to discuss on their weekly episodes. “I’ll read an article and think, ‘Why is it that way?’ or ‘What does that even mean?’ and then I just follow those questions trying to find different trusted resources,” Kovarik said. “We don’t always have all the answers, but we do try to offer points to consider as we dive into the stories.” As “Discover Ag” celebrates its first anniversary this winter, the entrepreneurial wheels are once again turning for Kovarik and Vander Dussen. In addition to their growing schedule of speaking engagements, the two are also currently pitching a corresponding docuseries to provide a visual

December 2023

component that looks at the origins of food and fiber. “Ultimately, we would love “Discover Ag” to be a TV series that highlights different parts of agriculture and connects people back with the hands that feed them,” Vander Dussen said. As she looks back on the journey she and Kovarik have been on over the past few years, Vander Dussen said she often can’t believe that after 10 years as an environmental consultant, she left an esteemed career and a steady salary to partner with a woman she had met just once in person and earn a living from apps that didn’t even exist when she started college. “We are living in a very different time, where so much can be accomplished digitally and remotely, and it’s really opened the world to us and allowed us to open our farms to the world,” she said. “When I finally leaned into this online world and this entrepreneurial journey, I found something I truly enjoy doing and believe it can help make a difference in the way consumers perceive our industry.” That entrepreneurial enthusiasm and desire to make a positive impact in agriculture is shared by Jessie Jarvis, who founded Of The West, an online job platform for the agriculture and western industries. While she admits she is new to the world of tech startups, Jarvis is no stranger to running businesses – she once owned a western lifestyle magazine, has developed a well-known online presence and

High $Profit Red Angus!

Using the $Profit Index is helping us find the best bulls and females to improve our herds. Using $Profit and $Ranch, we are able to find the animals that best balance all of the traits from growth to carcass and fertility. Additionally, $Profit gives us EPD tools that we otherwise would not have.

Breeding Red Angus bulls is easier if you have the $Profit suite of EPDs! $Profit Share partners get to select using these powerful EPDs: Claw Shape – to improve the structure and shape of a bull’s claw. Scrotal Circumference – to avoid producing bulls that have smaller than desirable scrotal circumference. Udder Quality – to eliminate the lines that produce undesirable udder quality.Male Breeding Soundness – to select for lines that have a high BSE pass rate at 15 months of age. Pulmonary Arterial Pressure – to ensure that offspring can withstand going to high altitude and survive to heavy weights in the feedlot. Feed to Gain – to find the lines that convert the best in the feedlot. Cow Fertility – to breed cows with higher lifetime fertility as seen in higher weaning percentages and longer active life. $Ranch – the best prediction of bulls that build better daughters and commercial herd profitability. A unique prediction for $Profit Share users. $Profit – the best prediction of overall profit from birth to harvest – the one number that $Profit Share breeders use the most. It’s all about producing the best possible Red Angus. Now, these traits are all available to commercial ranchers via the Zoetis Inherit Select test. Making Their Mark runs a Red Angus cow-calf operation in southern Idaho with her husband, Justin. Now, as Of The West CEO, Jarvis is using those experiences and her vast connections across the agriculture and western industries to help fill a void for job seekers and employers. Over the past 10 years, Jarvis had been frustrated both as she searched for internships and full-time positions and as she looked to hire employees herself. “One of the things that I knew to be true across all of those experiences was that it’s really difficult to find jobs and employees specific to agriculture and the western side of the industry,” she said. “If farmers and ranchers are going to be tasked with feeding a growing population, then our industries and the people in them are going to need to grow as well – and getting the right people in the right jobs is a crucial part of that equation.”

36

RED ANGUS Magazine |

The Of The West website allows job seekers to create resumes and add them to a database, generate job alerts and apply for positions. Jarvis said the platform’s fresh and modern approach to the job-seeking and hiring process helps connect younger generations. “Today’s young adults have grown up in an online world, and they don’t know about classified ads,” she said. “If our industries want to continue to find and retain new talent, we have to step into their world and make it easier to connect the right people with the right jobs. “We have made so many advancements in the last 20 years when it comes to animal health and nutrition and the fact that tractors can drive themselves, but when it comes to how we find jobs and how we find employees, there is still a really large disconnect.” Since launching the Of The West web-

They don’t have to brainstorm a list of companies they want to work for and then visit every one of those websites to see what positions are available.” With a growing clientele, Of The West recently launched an updated website with better functionality, and Jarvis is currently working on developing a directory for service providers

like photographers, videographers, journalists, graphic designers and web designers in the agriculture and western industries to assist companies and organizations looking for creative resources. While the platform continues to expand and evolve, owning a human resources technology company was never actually on Jarvis’ radar. However, as an advocate for agriculture and the western way of life, she could not ignore her strong desire to serve and elevate the companies and individuals within the industries. “I have no experience in the tech world and I’ve never been a recruiter or in human resources, so looking at Of The West, you might think I would be the least qualified person to have created a site like this,” she laughed. “But my passion for ensuring a strong future for our industries far outweighs all of that experience, and that’s really

been the driving force behind the platform and the services we provide.” Despite Of The West’s initial success, the third-generation cattle rancher acknowledges the entrepreneurial world is not for the faint of heart – much like the cattle business she’s always known and loved. “Growing up on a ranch and being a rancher now absolutely propelled me into this journey of being an entrepreneur,” Jarvis said. “I’ve always had to work hard and know that I’m not allowed to quit because there are animals counting on me to survive and my goal is to provide them the best possible life while they are with me. “Being a business owner is not always an easy road, but that grit and determination you are forced to have as a rancher are the characteristics that have helped me most as an entrepreneur.” //

Honest Cattle, Honest Product by Sarah Hill for the Red Angus Magazine In northwest Missouri, near Cameron, red cattle graze and wander in the rolling green hills. It’s a tranquil scene that’s home to a third-generation cattle producer. Alex Templeton’s family operates a large-scale row crop operation, and Alex works with her parents, Mark and Kim, on the cow-calf operation side of the business, Templeton Cattle Co. Alex grew up on the back of a horse and in the tractor cab, in what she described as an idyllic childhood. Over the years, her father took in a lot of different kinds of cattle for his custom grazing operation, giving her the opportunity to work with many different breeds and types of cattle. “It gave me a good baseline knowledge of how to handle all different kinds of cattle,” she said. An affinity for red cattle drove her to convince her dad to transition more Red Angus-influenced cattle into their herd after she returned to the farm upon college graduation in 2014, armed with her bachelor’s degree. She had always liked the look of Red Angus cattle, so moving forward with that breed was an easy choice for the family.

Red Angus-influenced cattle have become a niche market for Templeton Cattle Co.

“It’s fun hearing the remarks from people that drive by when we’ve got them out by the road,” he said. “We’re proud of them. If you’re proud of what you’ve got, that says something.” “They’re really eye-catching,” Alex added. Turning Around as Needed The operation purchases all of their replacement heifers and some bred heifers, and markets bred heifers, calves, cow-calf pairs and first-calf heifers. For those females they breed, Templeton said they focus on natural matings with low birthweights and high calving ease. “We’re very picky about the females we keep in our herd,” she attested. “They have to have the right body condition score, disposition and health status for us to decide that they’re going to fit in our program.”

“She came back with a lot of ideas,” Mark said.

A major consideration for the Templetons is a high conception rate. The herd bull is turned out with the females on May 1 for a 30- or 45-day period. Females only get one or two breeding cycles to stick with the herd bull before he’s pulled off the field. Alex does ultrasounds on the cattle over the summer, and calving starts around Feb. 7.

“Red cattle are popular in our area, but it’s harder to get big groups here,” Alex said. “The reds have turned into a niche market for us.”

“We understand why the Red Angus female is the beef industry’s most-favored female,” she said. “They’re maternal, docile, easy to handle. They’re just a joy to be around.”

Mark found it very interesting that, after selling the first group of Red Angus heifers, he got more calls on the red cattle than his black cattle.

She also noted that even at their most vulnerable time – right after calving – Red Angus mama cows are attentive, but not overly aggressive like some breeds.

December 2023

Honest Cattle, Honest Product “We jump out of the truck and mama stays right there and keeps an eye on us, but doesn’t bother us,” she said. “We work her baby, then turn them loose and they’re on their way. It’s quick and easy and we really enjoy working with these heifers like that. They’re easy to handle and easy to sell and that’s a home run for us.” The operation takes a progressive approach to marketing, taking risks and making forward-thinking decisions. The family business has sold pot loads of cattle to Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and more locations.

Alex Templeton works with her parents, Mark and Kim (not pictured) Templeton, to manage their herd of Red Angus-influenced cattle. “Customers call and ask for more,” Alex said.

“We don’t do the same thing every year,” Alex said. “We don’t sell calves at the same place or time every year. We play the market and try to judge what’s best. That’s one of the things I really like about our operation.”

Alex posts on Instagram, TikTok and most recently, YouTube, documenting the behind-the-scenes, day-in-the-life happenings of the cattle operation.

For example, in 2022, Templeton Cattle Co. sold weaned calves that were about 400-500 pounds. This year, the family sold calves right off the cow, opting not to invest the additional feed and medicine in the calves.

“I have a lot of followers who are involved in agriculture, and many who are not,” she explained. “We show them who we are, how we handle our cattle and the process involved in marketing cattle.”

The operation sells its cattle through connections that Mark has made in the beef industry over his many decades of raising cattle, and also through contacts Alex has made through her social media accounts.

Mark observes that it’s been challenging finding high-quality labor for Templeton Cattle Co., and he’s thankful to be able to work with his daughter every day.

Honest Cattle, Honest Product “I don’t have to worry about where she is or whether things are getting done, because I know she is on top of things,” Mark said. “Alex and I work really well together, and we can get a lot done.” “I had to earn my place here, and that’s something I’m really proud of,” Alex added. Setting Up for Success “We think it’s really important to give our females everything they need to be successful,” Alex explained. “We feed a very high-quality mineral program to shine them up and help them put on weight to help them stick at breeding time.” The feed mix includes salt, cracked corn, soy hull pellets and a dried distillers grains mix that the operation sources from its local cooperative. The family also puts up and feeds all of their own hay. Cattle are dewormed when they arrive at the operation and are vaccinated using a seven-way vaccination for blackleg and respiratory illnesses. Looking forward, Alex says the family plans to continue marketing honest females and not get stuck in a rut with practices that aren’t working for them.

Alex Templeton focuses on maintaining a high conception rate, with females only getting one or two cycles to breed. “Our word is worth everything, and we want to sell an honest product and animal to our customers,” Alex attested. “When people see they’re getting a quality product, we want to maintain that and identify where we can improve. Then, we’ll aggressively work to keep growing.” //

High-Value Carcasses in a High-Priced Market by Tom Brink, Top Dollar Angus Founder and Owner Fed cattle prices set records in 2023, spending much of the year in the $180s. These prices are higher than ever before. The value of ALL cattle has increased markedly. However, this exciting reality should not deter Red Angus ranchers from seeking to produce cattle valued at the high end of a high-priced market. Whether the general market is strong or weak, it always pays to create value-topping cattle and carcasses. After all, no one wakes up in the morning and says, “I want my cattle to be average.” To understand the distinguishing characteristics between high and low value carcasses in today’s market, some simple data analysis serves us well. A cattle feeder from Colorado recently shared carcass results on 360 head he had harvested from August to October this year. Most of the cattle were Red Angus or Red Angus-influenced, but there were a few other breeds in the mix. The table presents a comparison between the top 100 most-valuable carcasses and the bottom 100 head, which produced carcasses with the least value. High-priced markets create large financial differences between the best and worst cattle. The average value difference observed here was $558.31 per head, an astounding dollar amount that adds up quickly. When multiplied across 100 head, which both groups contained, there is a $55,831 difference in total revenue. Again, we are talking about the same Carcass Characteristic Average Value per Carcass Carcass Weight (lbs.) Marbling Score/Grade Ribeye Area (sq. inches) Back Fat (inches) 58

number of cattle in each of the two groups. Clearly, the top 100 carcasses had more value-creating carcass characteristics. Driving Carcass Value Higher Three of the four carcass characteristics presented in the table are significant contributors to carcass value. Carcass weight leads the way. In a high-priced market ($2.96 per pound in this case), every added pound equals more dollars in the cattle owner’s pocket. The observed 139-lb. difference between the two groups adds up to more than a $400 value difference per head. When prices are high, the last thing a producer wants is cattle that weigh up poorly. Weight is the number one carcass value differentiator for that reason. Second on the list of value-creating characteristics is marbling. The top value carcasses had an average marbling score 86 units above those with low carcass value (548 versus 462). That was enough to push more of the top group into “grid premium” territory, meaning more Prime and Upper 2/3 Choice. Quality grade results on the top 100 head were 17% Prime, 81% Choice and only 2% Select. Among those Choice-grading carcasses, 38% marbled well enough to reach upper 2/3 Choice. Contrast those results to the low value group, which had 0% Prime, 62% Choice, 32% Select, 1% Standard, plus a handful of dark cutters. Throughout 2023, the Choice grade premium above Select has seldom

been below $20 per hundredweight. Thus, every Select grade carcass represents a sizable financial loss. Marbling is indeed a big deal when it comes to creating valuable cattle. Top-valued carcasses also had larger ribeyes to go with their larger size. Average back fat was not appreciably different between the two groups, indicating their degree of finish was equal. Final Thoughts The carcasses analyzed here were all fed in the same Colorado feedlot. Probably 50% of the observed differences between the most and least valuable can be tied to health and genetics. Better health is known to positively affect both growth performance and marbling, which, as shown here, are important value makers. Genetics matter too, and genetics that create added pounds and marbling consistently dollar up above average. //

It Can Be Hard, but It’s Worth It by Gracie Rogers, JRA Board

Take a minute to think about things that make you uncomfortable. Maybe it’s conversing with someone new, traveling or learning a new language.

Gracie Rogers

Now, I want you to think about the positive outcomes of doing these things. You could make a new friend or discover a new food – the possibilities are endless.

Many people miss out on these amazing opportunities because they are afraid to step outside their comfort zone. Though it may be a bit scary to do, the results are always worth it. I know for me; I wouldn’t be where I am now if I hadn’t stepped outside of mine. Throughout my youth and teenage years, I had always traveled in a group. Whether it was a group of friends or my family, I didn’t like going places by myself. Being in a group was comfortable and I was too nervous to talk to new kids by myself, so I didn’t. But I soon realized that I needed to do something on my own to make those connections with others. Until that point, I had only attended a few Young Stockman Programs. I had heard about Round-Up and how much fun it was, but I had never attended. In the fall of 2021, I decided to attend my first Round-Up by myself. It took some negotiating, but I convinced my dad to let me go on my own.

“I want to be the person who helps others feel comfortable because I know if I didn’t have that person, things could have gone a lot differently.” do, my nerves were going crazy and I was missing the comfort of my family. But within an hour I was pleased with my decision and thrilled that I had stepped out of my comfort zone – by lunch the next day I had found my new group! That week I met so many new people and made so many new friends, but the people I spent the most time with were Grace, Wes and Cole. The four of us spent the week playing cards on long bus rides, telling stories about our lives and discovering new things. Even now, I still check in with them occasionally to find out what is going on in their lives. These friendships will be with me forever – all because I finally stepped out of my comfort zone. The decision to attend Round-Up by myself has shaped me into who I am today. From that moment on, I have been more outgoing and willing to talk to new people. I want to be the person who helps others feel comfortable because I know if I didn’t have that person, things could have gone a lot differently.

So, in the summer of 2022 I went to Denver, Colorado, with no idea how the week would go. And yet, this will likely always be one of my best decisions.

You never know what you are missing out on in life because you like the safety of your “group.” The skills and knowledge that you’ll gain by stepping outside your comfort zone are always worth it.

I remember walking into the hotel and seeing the ocean of unknown faces. At that moment I didn’t know what I was going to

So, find something new and try it, and when it gets tough and scary remember, it will be worth it! //

asha, Oklahoma. She will also work with the Junior Red Angus board of directors to provide educational events and leadership opportunities for Red Angus youth members.

Taylor Dorsey

“Taylor has an excellent background and work experience to step in and hit the ground running,” said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. “She is a great addition to our team and will continue to grow and expand our already strong junior programs.” //

In Memory

Milton Lewis Jung

Milton Lewis Jung, 83, of Altenburg, Missouri passed away Feb. 16, 2023. He was born April 13, 1939, in Evansville, Illinois, to Bernard H. and Luella (Runge) Jung. Milton was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Illinois Teachers Association, Kiwanis Club and Missouri Cattleman’s Association. He was an agriculture teacher, football coach, wrestling coach and mentor. He taught at Shawnee High School in Wolf Lake, Illinois, from 1962-1977 and then at Anna Jonesboro High School in Illinois from 1977-1992. Milton coached the Anna Jonesboro football team to a state championship in 1984 and runner-up in 1983. He enjoyed reading and had a passion for football, his cows and doing things right the first time. His greatest joy in life were his grandchildren Wade, Duane, Clayton, Aubrey and Keenan. Survivors include three sons, Gregory (Angela) Jung, Kevin Jung, Brent (Valerie) Jung; sister, Joyce Juelfs; five grandchildren, Wade (Breanne) Jung, Duane (Ashley) Jung, Clayton Jung, Aubrey Jung, Keenan Jung; Great-Grandchild, Emmett Jung and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ben Jung, Gary Jung, Mason Jung. Visitation was Feb. 21, 2023, with a graveside service and burial on Feb. 22, 2023, at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Apple Creek with Fr. Patrick Christopher officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Catholic Charities USA.

Lucinda Rae Lautenschlager Lucinda Rae Lautenschlager passed away Oct. 13, 2023, at her family’s home on their ranch near Endicott, Washington. She was 30 years old. Lucy was born Feb. 6, 1993, in Colfax, Washington, to Carl and Jodi Lautenschlager. She was their second born, after older brother Cody Lautenschlager and followed by the youngest, her sister Katy Lautenschlager. She was involved in many activities throughout her childhood in her hometown communities of Endicott and St. John, Washington. She attended elementary and middle school in Endicott, where she played T-ball, and then basketball, cheerleading and volleyball as she became of age. She attended St. John-Endicott High School from 2007 through her graduation year of 2011. There she participated in several activities including basketball, volleyball, Future Business Leaders of America and FFA. She enjoyed attending events such as the state FBLA convention to compete in academic and business categories, judging animals alongside her fellow FFA student members at local and state fairs, and attending the National FFA Convention during her high school years. She was recognized as a member of the National Honor Society during those years, also. She was smart as a whip, took her studies very seriously, and could often be found helping others with their homework assignments. She maintained a straight ‘A’ average throughout her entire school career. Her studies led her to attend college at Spokane Falls Community College, where she earned her degree in small business management, with an emphasis in finance and accounting. Between and throughout her various jobs and career ventures, she always also worked as an administrative as-

sistant with her family ranch business to do the record keeping, digital data entry, registration paperwork and other office tasks for their registered Red Angus cattle, working frequently with the Red Angus Association of America on her family ranch’s behalf. She was the “numbers” girl and would always amaze everyone with how well she could recall and handle any data or number-related job. She was just getting ready to move up to Spokane again with a new friend, and she was so excited for a new chapter ahead. Lucy will forever be loved and missed by her family, loved ones and the community members whose lives she impacted in a positive way throughout her all too short 30 years here in this life on earth. We now pray for her soul to be at peace and in God’s hands, and that she may find true freedom from all earthly ailments and hardships, in Heaven with her Creator. Lucy is survived by her parents, Carl and Jodi Lautenschlager, of Endicott, Washington, her brother, sister-inlaw and nephew, Cody, Kaysha, and Kayden Lautenschlager, of St. John, Washington, and her sister, Katy Lautenschlager of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She is also survived by her aunts and uncles (Keith and Loretta Paulson, Ron and Carol Newton, Scott Lautenschlager, Keith and Leann Hooper) along with many cousins, and additional friends and loved ones. A nonprofit, “Rae of Change: Lucy’s Legacy”, is being set up in her honor to help raise more awareness to the dangers, havoc and tragedy that come with the mass drug and opioid epidemic, of which Lucy heartbreakingly fell victim to. In lieu of flowers, for those feeling called to donate, visit raeofchange.org to donate online, or send donations to Rae of Change: Lucy’s Legacy, 1251 Cutler-Lautenschlager Rd, Endicott, WA 99125. Visitation was Oct. 19, 2023, with the graveside service on Oct. 20, followed by a celebration of Lucy’s life.
