Board Commentary

Board of Directors

Fellowship: It’s Good for the Soul

PRESIDENT Kyley DeVoe | Justin, Texas kyley@3klandandcattle.com

by Kyley DeVoe, RAAA President

FIRST VICE PRESIDENT AREA 4 DIRECTOR - SOUTHWEST Tony Ballinger | Morgan Mill, Texas anthony.ballinger@adm.com

As I look back on our week in Denver at the 70th annual National Red Angus Convention, I can’t help but think of how much has changed over the years. At times, I find it amazing just how fast technology can change in our industry. Over the last 20 or more years of attending conventions, we have always been right at the forefront of industry topics – whether it be new EPDs we’ve added to our evaluations or genetically enhancing those traits to speed up genetic progress in our calf crops, or it may be advancements in feed efficiency and carcass quality for some.

SECOND VICE PRESIDENT AREA 7 DIRECTOR - NORTHEAST Rob Hess | Hershey, Pennsylvania hessfarm@verizon.net

This year what stood out to me, in particular, were the innovations we’ve made over the years in pouring into our own members. I know you’re thinking, “What does he mean by that?” Which is understandable, because the strength of the Association has always been “good cattle but better people.” Yes, we have always had good discussion and great times catching up with old friends we don’t get to see as often as we would like, but this year just hit different.

TREASURER REGION C DIRECTOR Jeff Pettit | Sebree, Kentucky jeff@diamondpcattle.com AREA 2 DIRECTOR - MONTANA BOARD SECRETARY Kay Klompien | Manhattan, Montana klmpnra@gmail.com

I know this year, for me and a few other people I spoke with, there was a feeling that this convention really flowed in a special way. The opportunity to start each day with the prayer breakfast where we have time to come together, get in God’s word and listen to a message from fellow members was something unique and truly special for us to share with one another.

REGION A DIRECTOR Keith Hickle | Auburn, Washington keith.a.hickle@gmail.com

Additionally, featuring keynote speakers that addressed tough topics that can be easy to avoid but are crucial to the future was highly valuable. The main sessions featured worthwhile discussions necessary to the future of agriculture, from the difficult topic of generational transfer – which everyone dreads facing – to the mental health in agriculture challenge from Calli Thorne. And even though she wasn’t originally on the agenda, I truly believe Calli was supposed to be there with us, to discuss a topic that’s truly difficult and often avoided, but is so important for us to handle if God chooses to use us to help someone in their time of need.

REGION B DIRECTOR Craig Bieber | Leola, South Dakota craig@bieberredangus.com AREA 1 DIRECTOR - WEST George Murdock | Pendleton, Oregon murdockcattle@gmail.com AREA 3 DIRECTOR - ROCKY MOUNTAIN Aaron Kravig | Karval, Colorado akravig@kravigredangus.com AREA 5 DIRECTOR - NORTHERN PLAINS Stephanie Jung | Mina, South Dakota lazyjbarranch@yahoo.com

I would just like to say in closing that I understand how important the advancement in technology is to our breed and the cattle industry in general, but sometimes it’s just good to concentrate on the people. I would encourage you, if you’re reading this and don’t usually attend convention or just haven’t been in a while, why don’t you plan on joining us next year in Lincoln, Nebraska. I promise you’ll leave refueled and refreshed! //

AREA 6 DIRECTOR - GREAT PLAINS Jason Anderson | Oberlin, Kansas jasonea9@hotmail.com AREA 8 DIRECTOR - SOUTHEAST Jim Yance | Columbia, Alabama jim@jyjredangus.com AREA 9 DIRECTOR - MIDWEST Will Andras | Manchester, Illinois andras@irtc.net 4

70th Annual National Red Angus Convention a Success by Tom Brink, RAAA Chief Executive Officer

Red Angus Association of America members attend our national convention for a variety of reasons. The camaraderie with fellow breeders and Red Angus commercial producers is one good reason and garnering useful information from different speakers and workshops is additionally beneficial. There’s always more to learn about the business of beef and how to make our individual operations more prosperous. Other important reasons include: to hear updates on the state of the breed and Association, offer feedback to board members and staff, and conduct RAAA business. This year’s National Red Angus Convention, held Sept. 13-15 in Denver, Colorado, was a milestone in that it marked the 70th annual meeting of members. Many would say, 70 years and just getting warmed up! Seven decades of Red Angus and we recently reached the highest active cow inventory on record at 104,547 head, despite major drought the past few years. That makes an impressive statement. However, the best years are still ahead for these “all traits, maternal leaning” red cattle, known for great females and their ability to put a high-quality steak on consumers’ plates. There are several individuals that were recognized in Denver for their contribution to RAAA and Red Angus over many years. Steve Koester, Steele, North Dakota, completed two years as RAAA president, following a seven-year stint on the board (COVID-19 extended recent board terms by one year). Nine years in total. Thank you, Steve, for your hard work and unwavering dedication to Red Angus! Other outgoing board members who also served seven years are Chuck Feddes, Manhattan, Montana, and Stuart Gilbert, Stockport, Iowa. We appreciate both of you for the countless hours you spent laboring to make RAAA and Red Angus better.

The 70th annual National Red Angus Convention was a success with good attendance and participation from RAAA members across the nation. RED ANGUS Magazine | November 2023

Association Commentary: 70th Annual National Red Angus Convention a Success

At the 70th annual National Red Angus Convention, Kyley DeVoe, Justin, Texas, was elected president for a one-year term. Re-elected board members slated to serve a second, three-year term, include Tony Ballinger, Morgan Mill, Texas, and Rob Hess, Hershey, Pennsylvania. Newly elected board members are Will Andras, Manchester, Illinois, and Keith Hickle, Auburn, Washington. Congratulations to these gentlemen and thank you for your willingness to support Red Angus. The breed is in good hands. One more shoutout goes to Lois Bieber. Lois has been attending Red Angus conventions since the 1960s, longer than anyone else present at this year’s meeting. We appreciate you, Lois! You and your family mean a lot to Red Angus and the RAAA. The Red Angus Stakeholders Foundation was officially launched during our time in Denver. The purpose of the foundation is to support the Red Angus breed through youth activities, research and education. More than $25,000 was raised in RASF’s inaugural fundraising event. RASF is chartered in Colorado, in alignment with the location of the RAAA office. Its 501(c)(3) status as a charitable organization is pending but is expected to be received from the Internal Revenue Service during the first

However, each donor should consult with their tax accountant and/or call Janet Russell at the RAAA office, 940-387-3502, Ext. 11, if they have questions. We appreciate those who contributed to RASF. We especially thank Barenthsen-Bullinger Red Angus, Powers Lake, North Dakota, for donating a pick of their 2023-born heifer calves to the Pick of the Herd auction. Thanks also to Klompien Red Angus, Manhattan, Montana, and Murdock Cattle Co., Pendleton, Oregon, for teaming up to purchase the heifer pick for $12,000. RASF is off to a great start thanks to the help of RAAA members. Much more could be said about the 70th annual National Red Angus Convention. It was truly an enjoyable and successful event. Kudos to the entire RAAA staff for all their hard work in planning and executing this year’s meeting. Special thanks go to Halla Pfeiff, Katie Martin, Lisa Bryant and Tracey Koester. Peggy Bieber, who serves on our convention committee, also went above and beyond. All of you care greatly for the Red Angus breed and its members, and it shows in everything you do! Start planning now to join us next year for the 71st annual National Red Angus Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska, Sept. 11-13, 2024. //

What a gorgeous cow that is also highly productive. She has produced 4 calves with a 369-day calving interval. She has 3 daughters we have retained, and this year’s Reputation bull calf was one of the heaviest calves weaning at 742 lbs. Calving early to the highly sought after Reputation again this year, this is your chance to get genetics that aren’t open to the public yet. Phenotypically there is not much we would change about this heifer. She goes back to one of the most powerful cows we have raised in Feddes Sleek 806. She will be 16 years old and her ET calves this year were again at the very top of the weaning list. 806 never misses and we think this heifer will be the same way.

Her granddam was in production until 15 years old with 14 calves recorded on a 365-day calving interval. Bred to an exciting new herd sire, C-T Markets Up 2119, arguably the best Stockmarket son to date.

by Rachael Oliver, Commercial Marketing Specialist The implementation of EID tags is not a new concept, but it’s a practice that has become increasingly necessary in different industry segments. There are two types of EIDs: 1. An 840 EID is acknowledged by USDA and is associated with a premise ID. More importantly, for northern producers who border Canada, an 840 EID qualifies cattle for export. 2. The other EID option is a 982 button. This tag is not acknowledged by USDA and doesn’t require a premise ID. Both can be used in the beef industry, but the 840 EID is preferred by packers and feeders. You may be wondering why EIDs are important to producers. Feedyards and packers now require EIDs to track information. For feedyards to keep accurate health, feed and carcass data records, they place EID tags in all cattle received at their yard. When those cattle are processed at the packing plant, they are scanned with an EID reader so packers know what branded beef box to place that carcass in and can upload individual carcass data. When buyers see calves without EID tags, they know they’ll have to add one more step when receiving those calves. This adds time and expense, which can lead to one less bid for you as a producer. RAAA offers some of the most affordable EID tags in the industry, at only $2.20/ button. Along with EIDs, RAAA also offers combo tags for $3.30. This option allows producers to continue using a dangle tag, but comes with an EID as well, making it a win-win for both parties. When I asked Will Druery, senior cattle procurement coordinator at Adams Land & Cattle, why they no longer use ranch of origin dangle tags for identification, he stated, “We have to put an EID in them, and for a producer in the Brazen program, their performance information would be tied to the EID.” Producers sending cattle to ALCC must have an EID to receive data back from those animals. John Saunders, CEO of IMI Global, a division of Where Food Comes From, Inc., said, “IMI Global moved to requiring EID tags for verification and traceability compliance for our verification programs 15 years ago. This was welcomed by both our feedyard and packing plant partners who were installing wand readers or panel reader systems. They are using these tools to read EID tags to increase accuracy and speed versus reading and recording visual tags to verify compliance of animals of various marketing claims. “Packing plants that we work with through our feedyard customers have been vocal about the issues discussed above of reading the Red Angus visual tags to the point that effective three years ago, we now require feedyards to apply an EID in each animal that is carrying only a Red Angus visual tag at receiving. This requires additional time and expense for the feedyards.” I also asked Red Angus producer, owner of Feddes Family Meats & Amsterdam Meat Shop, Superior Livestock representative and Montana Department of Live-

stock board member, Jake Feddes, his thoughts about the yellow dangle tag. He said, “The FCCP yellow tag program has been the most successful age and source program developed. However, for there to be any premium when selling calves, the dangle tag has fallen far behind. Marketing the dangle tag as an age and source program at this point is almost false advertising. Without an EID, it means nothing to people buying large lots of cattle.” Considering the advice from these three industry leaders on how to make Red Angus calves more valuable, it

may be time to explore adding EIDs into your management practices. You may use the FCCP dangle tag for personal management, but we recommend adding the EID. We’re in an age where technology is fully embraced, and that can be downright EIDs are become increasingly necessary across the industry. terrifying. However, I think producers should consider the positive effects that implementing EIDs can programs, isn’t it high time we listen have on marketing efforts. RAAA is one to the industry’s needs and consider of the oldest age and source verified implementing EIDs in our herds? //

Red Angus Association of America Brings in Two New Marketing Specialists The Red Angus Association of America is pleased to announce two new additions as commercial marketing specialists – Cory Peters and Taylor Ohlde. These individuals will be traveling extensively to ranches and sales to promote RAAA marketing programs, conducting audits for the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program and working closely with commercial producers to achieve their individual herd goals. Peters joins Red Angus from Dorchester, Nebraska, and holds a deep passion for the cattle industry. He earned two bachelor’s degrees in animal science and grazing livestock systems from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2016. Since then, Peters has worked at Lone Creek Cattle Co. as the cattle procurement agent and data management coordinator. Ohlde hails from Winchester, Kansas, and has been working closely with cattle producers

and helping them maximize their breeding programs for more than a decade. Ohlde obtained his bachelor’s degree in animal science/business from Kansas State University in 2018 after receiving his associate degree from Hutchinson Community College. Ohlde brings experience in animal nutrition, sales and marketing to the association, most recently serving as a feed sales specialist at Central Valley Ag. “I have been a consultant and done marketing for many different segments of the beef industry, but I always come back to the value of the brood cow,” Ohlde said. “I find Red Angus to be the type of cattle that can survive in a variety of climates and cow herds to make a positive impact.” RAAA is excited to have both young professionals working with producers. Peters and Ohlde both started their positions Sept. 11. “We are pleased to announce the hiring

Timelines for Productivity and Results by Halla Pfeiff, Executive Assistant

At this year’s convention in Denver, Stephanie Essegian and Kaitlyn Fulmer of the RAAA registration department, and Lindsay Upperman, Ph.D., director of breed improvement, conducted a workshop about data collection, data reporting, association due dates and reviewing data once submitted. It was well-attended and participants had outstanding questions. If you were not able to attend or would like a recap, read on for valuable information that might help with data management. This graphic, which was handed out during the workshop, provides a simplified visual of the yearly RAAA reporting timeline from start to finish. During the workshop, staff went into full detail of each step of the process on this timeline and provided some tips and tricks regarding reporting through REDSPro and reports available to help in evaluation once data is submitted. Pay attention to the details in the highlighted boxes as they provide the deadlines we reference often, plus other documents and notifications throughout the year. The recommended days of age for collection, and key brief descriptions of the processes are also provided.

Arrow #4 of the timeline – ultrasound – was an area during the workshop that triggered members to ask questions regarding the process, pulling reports once data is received by the respected lab, when it gets incorporated into EPDs, and how groups can be joined for contemporary grouping purposes. or visiting: RedAngus.org > Herd Management > Red Angus Alley

The last step is to double check the data was submitted properly. A huge piece of data submission is reviewing your contemporary groups and that cattle are being evaluated in the weekly genetic evaluation as accurately as possible. Within the workshop, a major emphasis was placed on properly identifying your contemporary groups and how to regroup animals if something appears to be incorrect. Eleven bullet points were highlighted to help keep groups as clean as possible. Those bullet points are listed on the next page.

Timelines for Productivity and Results The Dos and Don’ts of Contemporary Grouping 1. Register all animals in the same job. 2. Use Birth, Wean and Year Group fields to indicate different management decisions. 3. Remove animals that have become sick or injured by giving them a unique group code. 4. Animals must group at birth to group at weaning and must group at weaning to group at yearling. 5. Sex, weight date, mating type and feed code differences automatically separate animals and do not need to be considered in your Birth, Wean or Year Group codes. 6. Calves weighed and scanned outside the appropriate age window will group differently. Check each age parameter and use multiple weight dates if necessary. 7. Calves that receive special treatment should be in their own contemporary group. 8. The goal is to maintain contemporary group size as large, but as accurately as possible. 9. Never purposely form contemporary groups with only one sire represented. 10. There is considerable variability in resources among pastures even if they are in close proximity to each other. 11. If animals will be separated at older ages, collect phenotypes on those animals before they are separated. Note: if you need to have an individual animal or group of animals combined or regrouped reach out to the registration department for completion. After the workshop, several producers requested clarification of their contemporary groups on their own ranches. This included questions regarding calves born in different pastures but then brought together at weaning, to a bull test group getting ultrasounded and how these would eventually be contemporary grouped. For the majority of these situations, an animal’s contemporary group is ultimately determined by the group it is entered into at birth, as this is the largest group. As an animal gets separated or treated differently in the herd, the contemporary groups get smaller as we go through weaning, yearling and maturity.

Key Member Service Roles Are Filled at Red Angus The Red Angus Association of America is pleased to announce two new staff members who have joined the Red Angus team. Julia Sanderson became a DNA customer service specialist and Andi Inmon has joined the member services department as a receptionist. Sanderson is a recent graduate of Oklahoma State University, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in animal science and agricultural business. Sanderson will work with the breed improvement and technical committees as they guide the department in developing and implementing tools to increase the reliability of Red Angus genetics. Julie Sanderson

“Julia’s background in the commercial and show cattle sectors, along with her experiences in other agricultural industries, led her to be a top candidate for the DNA customer service specialist position,” said Lindsay Upperman, Ph.D., RAAA director of breed improvement. “We are blessed to have Julia join the DNA department from her hometown in Midland, Michigan, and hope she enjoys her promising career at RAAA!” Inmon joined the member services department recently. From Loveland, Colorado, she is a 2018 graduate of Colorado State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a minor in business. She was a member of the 2017 CSU meat judging team. “Andi has jumped into her new role as if she were a seasoned employee,” said Halla Pfeiff, RAAA executive assistant. “RAAA’s busy season has hit, and she has already proven to be a valuable asset to the team, willing to help in any area needed. We are excited about her joining the team and the assets she brings.” For more information about the Red Angus Association of America or marketing programs for Red Angus-influenced cattle, visit RedAngus.org. // Andi Inmon

Breed Improvement

Protocols on the Upcoming EPD Blanking by Lindsay Upperman, Ph.D., Director of Breed Improvement During the 2023 National Red Angus Convention, various genetic and breed improvement topics were discussed. However, the subject that received the most discussion, especially during regional and area caucus meetings, was the upcoming EPD Blanking Initiative that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2024. In order to gather more data on lowly reported traits at RAAA, the breed improvement committee decided to blank EPDs on animals based on a given accuracy for the trait. The recommendation stated to blank EPDs on animals in the 2023 calf crop for growth traits with an accuracy less than 0.15, intake less than 0.05 accuracy, carcass traits less than 0.05 accuracy, calving ease traits less than 0.05 accuracy and maternal traits less than 0.01, unless the animal has genomically enhanced EPDs. These traits were grouped as follows: • Growth Traits – Birth Weight, Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, Average Daily Gain • Intake – Dry Matter Intake • Carcass Traits – Back Fat, Carcass Weight, Ribeye Area, Marbling, Retail Cuts • Calving Ease Traits – Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal • Maternal Traits* – Heifer Pregnancy, Metabolic Energy, Stayability, Milk *Maternal Traits will not be grouped; each trait will be treated on an individual basis. Due to these groups, the EPDs will be blanked for the group, unless all accuracy values for those traits are above the stated accuracy. This was put into place in order to obtain some of the traits that are not reported as often as others. For instance, for growth traits, birth weight and weaning weight are usually reported, especially due to Total Herd Reporting. However, yearling weight is not reported to the same extent. Thus, in order to display the EPDs for birth weight and weaning weight, yearling weight and average daily gain will also need to have an accuracy above 0.15. This can be done by reporting the trait for the given animal in the database. However, in order to help those producers who may not have the ability or ease of collecting some traits, the committee decided to restore all EPDs if an animal was genotyped. This includes traits such as heifer pregnancy, metabolic energy and even dry matter intake that do not currently have genomics incorporated into their EPDs. 26

RED ANGUS Magazine |

November 2023

Lindsay Upperman, Ph.D., answered members’ questions during her workshop at the National Red Angus Convention. Additional Displays Blanked Due to EPDs being blanked, the indexes that contain a blanked EPD will also be blanked. For example, as carcass traits are involved in the GridMaster index, if carcass traits are blanked on the given animal, the GridMaster index as well as the ProS index will be blanked. Furthermore, RAAA has tools available that utilize parent EPDs to showcase potential mating outcomes for a given calf crop. Thus, the progeny calculator will also show blanked EPDs, if the given parent animal has EPDs that are blanked. Also, given EPDs are displayed in show programs throughout the year, these animals will also have blanked EPDs within these programs. Overall, the presentation of this initiative at the workshop opened the floor for multiple questions. The majority of producers were focused on specific topics particular to their own operations. For instance, those producers that utilize foreign sires imported into the database questioned whether that sire’s EPDs would be blanked. In answer, most highly used sires should have accuracy values over the chosen thresholds listed above. Additionally, foreign sires have a different registration type status depicted as “F” and thus wouldn’t be affected. Other questions focused on asking how to improve the accuracy values of given traits. Ultimately, the accuracy of the EPD reflects the amount of information utilized in the calculation for the EPD. Thus, an EPD is estimated based on information such as an animal’s actual performance, progeny or other relative’s performance, as well as genomic data. Any of this information will help to increase accuracy on your animal’s EPDs and ultimately allow all EPDs to be displayed for your calf crop. In summary, the EPD Blanking Initiative will go into effect the beginning of the new year, Jan. 1, 2024. This will only affect those animals that fall below the reported accuracy values for the given trait groups in the 2023 calf crop, unless the given animal is genotyped. Ultimately, this initiative is trying to improve the Red Angus breed by gaining more data on lowly reported traits which will provide more reliable EPD estimates to RAAA producers and their customers. //

Big-Picture Ranching

Taking a Systems-Based Approach to Making Management Decisions by Macey Mueller, for the Red Angus Magazine For decades, March was calving season at the Wilson Flying Diamond Ranch, located on the western edge of the Nebraska Sandhills. Like many of her neighbors, fifth-generation rancher Jaclyn Wilson was spending some long days supplementing cows and keeping calves alive in the oftentimes harsh Nebraska late winter. Looking to reduce calf loss and to raise cattle that better fit their environment, Wilson and her dad, Blaine, made the decision to instead start calving May 1 for 45 days. “We want our cows to work for us; we don’t want to work for our cows,” Wilson said. “Calving a bit later allows us to pasture everything and cuts back on the manpower and supplementation expense required during winter calving, and keeping our calving window tight helps with uniformity and marketing opportunities later down the road.” Making a management decision like adjusting calving dates can sound innocent enough – just turn the bulls out

a month or two later – but what about the implications on other points in the production cycle? “We run a long yearling program, so we’re not as concerned about weaning weights in the fall, and here in the Sandhills, we don’t deal with mud like a lot of operations, so we can get by with pushing calving season more in tune with what Mother Nature originally intended for animals to do,” Wilson said. The important considerations the Wilsons made in their decision to calve later are part of a “systems-based ranching” approach, which Karla Wilke, Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension livestock management specialist, said is the process of looking at the whole picture – and the bottom line – when making a decision about one time point in the production cycle. “It’s all about avoiding tunnel vision and really thinking through the implications of a change at point A on point B and point C,” she explained. “For example, if you’re moving your calving dates to avoid frigid temperatures or better line up forage resources with peak lactation, how will it affect cows breeding on a declining plane of nutrition instead of an increasing plane of nutrition?

“Maybe you’re going to save some hay on the front end because your cows aren’t calving in March and they have a lower requirement, but you may need to spend a little bit of that on a supplement.” While lighter weaning weights don’t necessarily affect the Wilson Flying Diamond Ranch’s business model, Wilke said other producers may need to use the systems-based approach to decide if they are comfortable selling their calves at the same time they have in the past or if it makes sense to hold them over for a few months to add pounds. “If you’re selling your calves at the same point in time but they’re two months younger, that lighter calf may bring a little less. However, you had less death loss than you did in the early spring and a little less feed resources in your cows, so after you figure your breakeven, it may still make that change a positive one,” she said. “On the other hand, you may need to hit a different market because you’ve changed your product, so you decide to incur the cost of feeding those calves until January. “And of course, you’ll want to make sure your banker is going to be ok if you have an operating note payment in December.”

The Wilsons’ systems-based approach to moving their calving dates means less labor and death loss in the cold Nebraska winters without sacrificing performance in other facets of their operation.

Big-Picture Ranching To best navigate the decision-making process, Wilke suggests making a calendar of the major points in a cow’s production cycle – calving, peak lactation, breeding, preconditioning, weaning and selling the calf – and the nutritional and labor needs that go with each of them.

enterprise can be a big ship to turn. She encourages producers to be dynamic and willing to make adjustments while also taking the time to think through the total impact the decision will have.

“Line those up with the months they would fall if a change was made and then look at what else is going on in the operation and the industry,” she said.” If it’s an integrated operation, what farming activities are going on? Do any of the laborers have off-farm jobs that are especially busy at certain points? What are some seasonal marketing trends?

“I want producers to feel Whether it’s shifting calving dates or starting a direct-toempowered with their decision and fully understand consumer beef business, fifth-generation rancher Jaclyn Wilson how it’s going to affect their and her dad Blaine are careful to consider all implications on production cycle,” she said. their production cycle. “I don’t want them to feel paralyzed with fear of making a decision and stepping out there because been phased out of the operation, so sometimes you just got to make a the decision was made to end fall calvmove.” ing after this year.

“If I want to move X then where do Y and Z fall?”

“Our fall calves just really don’t fit the environment very well,” she said. “Because it cost a lot more to run a pair than it does to run cows and calves separately in the Sandhills, we were early weaning the fall calves at about 90 days

Big-Picture Ranching and bringing them into our feed lot until about March, which meant more feed and more manpower. “It can be hard to make a shift that big, but I go back to the old rancher saying that ‘one of the worst things you can say in agriculture is this is the way that we’ve always done it.’ It’s always worth looking at the alternatives and being willing to change to better fit how the operation needs to function and how the cattle need to function.” Sometimes taking those calculated leaps of faith can pay off in unexpected ways, as it did when the Wilsons decided to add a direct-to-consumer beef business – Flying Diamond Beef – to their operation in 2019. Wilson had been toying with the idea for several years beforehand, but as the lack of understanding between producers and consumers grew wider, she knew she wanted to be part of the

conversation. “From a production and management standpoint, the beef business made sense for our operation,” she said. “Maybe more importantly, it has helped bridge that gap and helped people better understand where their food comes from, how it’s grown and why we do what we do.” As a cow-calf producer, Wilson had always been good at analyzing records and performance data, but she said selling her product directly to consumers has helped her become “a better producer.” “We’ve always had a good concept of what we were doing from the hide in, but it was a lot different when you started looking at product out,” she said. “For instance, we could blow everything out of the water from a quality perspective, but yield grade is something we’ve struggled with. Having this

The decision to start Flying Diamond Beef has not only impacted the way Wilson feeds cattle but has also provided meaningful conversations with consumers. new perspective as a consumer-facing business has changed how we’re feeding and finishing animals. “From a financial position, the business breaks even, but the lessons we’ve learned and the consumer interactions we’ve had make it worthwhile when we’re looking at the big picture.” //

Reflecting on Elevate by Bailey Jean Smith, JRA Board

Everyone who attended the 2023 National Red Angus Convention had the same question for the Elevate attendees: “What exactly are you all doing in there?” Laila Down, founder of Point One Development, led Elevate Collegiate Leadership Conference in conjunction with the conBailey Jean Smith vention Sept. 14-15 in Denver, Colorado. Elevate was sponsored by the Red Angus Foundation, Inc. The purpose of this conference was to “elevate” the way attendees used their strengths to lead, interact and network among others, and form their own personal brand. Prior to Elevate, everyone attending took the Clifton Strengths test, an assessment intended to determine a person’s top five strengths. The test was created by Don Clifton, the “Father of Strengths Psychology.” Clifton developed this assessment after focusing his research on what people did “right” rather than following the usual trend of psychology that deduced what was “wrong” with people; an attitude he developed after serving in World War II. Down applied this outlook to her speaking points at Elevate, and attendees were encouraged to look at their strengths more than their weaknesses and create a more positive outlook of themselves. Down used Clifton’s definition of strength, saying strength “is the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance in a specific activity.” Down also said strengths were derived from a person’s natural talents, and that “the key to success is to fully understand how to apply your greatest strengths in your everyday life.” Down also explained that a person’s natural strengths are there for a reason. Much of the conference had an emphasis on looking inwards to not only find one’s strengths, but to ask why they were there. Attendees individually shared their top five strengths according to the strengths assessment, and explained where they

thought they exhibited these strengths in their own lives. The discussion then focused on how these strengths could assist a person in building their own personal brand. That “brand” being how a person portrays themselves to the rest of the world, whether in everyday life or professionally. The hope of this discussion was that one bases their personal branding on their core values, or the beliefs they live by and base major life decisions on. Down also heavily emphasized how “saying” what your brand is, is not enough. People do not tend to take seriously what they cannot see. The phrase she used was “delivering on your brand promise,” and said that a person’s reputation follows them based on their actions, and whether that reputation is good or bad is up to that individual. These points came up during discussion more than once: • People are not brought in until they feel heard. • People are put on this earth on purpose, for a purpose. • Weaknesses are your strengths in overdrive. • How do you show your strengths in everyday life? Participants spoke highly of Down and enjoyed her method of having an open discussion as opposed to a lecture-style presentation. There were also multiple activities that required participants to move around and have discussions with each other; many of which could also be applied to real-life scenarios. While attendees were in one room for hours at a time during the conference, the subject matter kept everyone interested for the duration of the two days. What was learned at Elevate can be applied outside of the conference room in Denver and applied to a person’s real life. Participants discussed networking, resume building, authentic leadership and introspection – skills valuable across all industries and vital to a successful career in the future, making this a valuable experience for all participants as they pursue their degrees and future employment. //

Making an Impact – One Consumer at a Time by Sarah Hill for the Red Angus Magazine

The Ramseys would like to blend the best of the past with modern agriculture today. The farm has a homesite that dates to 1923, which Cynthia plans to turn into a small storefront for their online beef business. Additionally, an Airbnb where visitors could immerse themselves in ranch life is in the long-term plan.

Most U.S. consumers are at least three generations removed from the farm, according to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. Jimmy and Cynthia Ramsey are bridging that gap with their online beef business, fueled by Red Angus genetics. Excellent Genetics Ramsey Reds is a Red Angus herd based near Houston, Missouri. After she completed college, Cynthia and her parents, Jim and Glenda Jones, had a commercial cattle herd and were looking to improve their cattle genetics. Their herd was primarily Simmental at the time, so Jim and Cynthia bought some registered Red Angus bulls. “They were just excellent bulls,” Ramsey said. “We were so pleased with the calves and quality of the heifers as they matured that we decided to stick with Red Angus and kept integrating more Red Angus genetics into the herd.” The herd was built up to about 100 mama cows. Jim was ready to retire in 2020, opening an opportunity for the couple to purchase a property with 64 acres nearby the following year. As it turned out, the property they bought had been owned by Cynthia’s great-great-aunt and has been in the family since the 1870s.

children: Carson, 8, Mikendra, 17, Austin, 20 and Lexie, 21. Jimmy is a driver for UPS, and Cynthia is a brand manager for Progressive Ozark Bank. The family has only exhibited their Red Angus cattle locally but has really enjoyed the opportunity for their kids to build relationships through the industry. Balancing Top Traits Today, Ramsey Reds has about 35 head, and the Ramseys focus on balancing calving ease, milk production and maternal traits. “A few years ago, we made the decision to raise all of our own replacements,” Ramsey said. “We are aiming to produce calves that need to be able to grow, the cows need to be able to calve easily, and the heifers should be good mamas, because we’re keeping the cream of the crop to improve our herd.” More recently, the Ramseys have also been integrating more carcass data into their breeding decision making process.

“Ramsey Reds was born out of a partial partnership with my parents but gave us the opportunity to have our own Red Angus cow-calf operation,” Ramsey explained. The family had to renovate two pastures to bring them back to productivity.

Trackability, Accountability Ramsey Reds has been using FCCP tags since 2021. The Red Angus FCCP program is the beef industry’s best value in age and source verification, allowing Red Angus producers to average a premium of $2.98 per hundredweight compared to Red Angus-sired calves without the yellow tag. The program only requires a minimal investment of $1.30 per tag and no enrollment fee.

Jimmy and Cynthia both work off the farm, and have four

Making an Impact – One Consumer at a Time Bull & Female Sale, but at the time, we weren’t in a position to facilitate making sure we had the quality and met the program expectations in order to be able to participate in the FCCP program,” Ramsey said. “After the move, we were able to keep heifers separate and have all the records in place, so we could step into the program.” Since the Ramseys have their own direct-to-consumer beef business, they like being able to utilize the FCCP program to promote their beef. “It enables consumers to really know where their beef comes from and know their rancher,” she said. “It’s also doing away with labeling, compared to what you buy in the grocery store.” However, the Ramseys are adamant not to denigrate beef bought in grocery stores. In Texas County, where the Ramseys live, 60% of the population is at or below poverty level, so many of them are dependent on grocery stores. “It goes back to the principles that we stand for as cattle producers,” Ramsey attested. “We can tell consumers that the beef they’re getting from this lineage was raised right here, and it’s trackable and there’s an accountability factor.” Year-Round Grazing The cattle at Ramsey Reds are predominantly pasture-fed year-round, as the Ramseys practice intensive rotational grazing, including stockpiling fescue for winter. “It’s a little labor intensive, but it’s been valuable for us in the long run,” Ramsey said. “We occasionally supplement with range cubes to introduce the calves to grain, so when they’re weaned, it’s not new for them.” Having a little grain available helps the calves during the stressful weaning period, according to Ramsey. The weaned calves only get between 2-4 pounds of grain per day. “We don’t claim to raise solely grass-fed beef,” she said. “We do supplement what the cattle need, and we’re not ashamed of it.”

Making an Impact – One Consumer at a Time The cattle at Ramsey Reds have no problem filling out and maturing, and the beef still tastes great, said Ramsey. Building an Online Beef Business The pandemic was pivotal for the Ramseys in terms of their direct-to-consumer beef business. Before the pandemic, Ramsey said that they sold probably two to three beef to their friends and neighbors each year and harvested a couple for their own family. “I had a friend in the St. Louis area, and the stores were running out of meat,” she explained. “My friend and her family always had meat, and when her friends asked about that, they connected with us, and we sold beef to them as well.” In 2020, the Ramseys sold almost three times as much beef as they had before, and it was insightful for them. “This is not something that’s going away,” Ramsey said. “People want beef – we just didn’t have the capacity at the time.” After moving to their new location, the Ramseys were able to figure out a way to make more beef available, launching their online beef business in January 2023. “We’ve been really shocked at how well it’s done,” Ramsey added. “We thought we’d be marketing to city folks, because everyone around here knows a rancher. But that hasn’t been the case. Our predominant customer base has been within a 10-mile radius of our ranch.” Selling beef directly to consumers has certainly provided a significantly higher profit margin for the Ramseys, who are excited to be adding a diversified income stream to their cattle operation.

Making an Impact – One Consumer at a Time “We’ve only done a little paid advertising – probably less than $100,” Ramsey said. “Otherwise, we’ve let it grow on its own. We can see the potential there.” The business has been slowly increasing in number of orders, with September 2023 meriting about two to three orders per week, ranging from $8-$255. But the most interesting thing the Ramseys have observed is that so many of their customers have no idea how to connect with a ranch in the first place. “I’ve ranched my entire life, and for most of the people I interact with, it wouldn’t even cross their minds to ask me about buying beef,” Ramsey said. “At first, we thought we’d just be selling quarters, halves and wholes, but it’s been the exact opposite.” Connecting with Consumers The direct-to-consumer beef business has also opened the door to educating more people about agriculture. When customers arrive to pick up their beef, they inevitably have questions about what activity is happening on the ranch. One customer specifically planned his beef pick up to occur when he had family visiting from Los Angeles, so his teenage family members – who had never been to a farm – got to see a unique experience with the bottle calves and chickens.

The direct-to-consumer beef business has also opened the door to educating more people about agriculture. “It was so inspiring to see the ranch through their eyes,” explained Ramsey. “Now they have a connection to a farm and know where their beef and eggs come from.” The Ramseys would like to blend the best of the past with modern agriculture today. The farm has a homesite that dates to 1923, which they plan to turn into a small storefront for their online beef business. An Airbnb where visitors could immerse themselves in ranch life is also in the long-term plan. Hosting events and camps for kids are also on their wish list. They also hope that one of their children will eventually take over the operation. “There are still a lot of families that are isolated, and everyone having a garden or cow just isn’t realistic anymore, but we can preserve a little bit of that,” Ramsey said. “We can let others see it and be part of it and see how they fit into the big picture. Consumers are important to ranchers. //

care of yourself and offered insight on how to show up for others. Her powerful message encouraged attendees to shift their mindsets and prioritize mental well-being. Friday afternoon, Janette Barnard, Merk Animal Health and creator of the Prime Future, spoke to attendees about the future of the protein industry. Barnard opened producers’ minds to find a competitive, sustainable advantage for the sake of profit. “Innovation is one of the big opportunities of how we can do this,” said Barnard. “In order to innovate, we have to really expose ourselves to new ideas.” Providing multiple examples of innovation in agriculture, Barnard challenged producers to expand their thinking and challenge traditionalism in an effort to create sustainable profits as the protein industry evolves. Friday afternoon members participated in caucus meetings, electing Kyley DeVoe of Justin, Texas, as president of the Association for the 2023-2024 year. Board members for the coming election cycle were also chosen by the membership: Keith Hickle was elected as director of Region A; Tony Ballinger was re-elected as director of Area 4; Rob Hess was re-elected as director of Area 7; and Will Andras was elected as director of Area 9. The convention concluded with the annual awards banquet, recognizing influential members and superior producers in the Red Angus breed for their hard work and dedication to the breed. Attendees shared a steak meal, sponsored by Tyson Fresh Meats, as several Red Angus producers and members were recognized for their leadership and service. Symposium Aids Producers in ‘Recovery After Drought’ by Amy Wampler, Communications Intern

Cattle producers gathered at the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium during the 70th annual National Red Angus Convention to gain insight on recovering their operations from the detrimental effects of drought. Emceed by Lane Nordlund, the day left producers with a wealth of knowledge to use to recover from a drought. Increasing Production Efficiency The ballroom was full as Rick Funston, Ph.D., reproductive physiologist and University of Nebraska professor, kicked off the symposium focusing on increasing production efficiency. Funston’s expertise in reproduction offered cattle producers practical knowledge to take back to their operations. Properly managing reproduction and genetics, especially during a period of environmental stress, is key to running an efficient operation. “Reproduction is the single most important trait in beef production,” he said. Behind feed costs, cow depreciation is the second largest cost of production, said Funston. The keynote offered insight into decreasing this depreciation cost, revolving around reproductive management decisions.

“It’s a numbers deal,” said Funston. “By simply increasing progeny per dam through selection, heterosis from crossing or better management will increase the efficiency of production.” Funston also mentioned the importance of not only getting cattle pregnant, but timing and management practices leading up to conception. From properly handling cattle after artificial insemination, to choosing an appropriate replacement female and the advantages of early calving, Funston’s address gave commercial producers practical knowledge to take home.

Rick Funston, Ph.D., offered practical advice on managing reproduction, especially during a period of environmental stress.

Leveraging Sustainability and Value-Added Programs Doug Stanton, IMI Global, joined the discussion to provide producers with an updated consumer profile. IMI Global, a division of Where Food Comes From, Inc., provides third-party verification programs, allowing producers to add value to their cattle. Stanton highlighted that consumers are seeking a “better for me” product – one that is good for the animal, the planet, the environment and the workers. Furthermore, meat eaters are seeking a sustainably produced product.

Doug Stanton explained the third-party verification offered by IMI Global, a division of Where Food Comes From, Inc.

Properly managing cattle nutrition is especially critical during drought. The nutrition panel featured Brian Fieser, Ph.D., nutrition support specialist for ADM Animal Nutrition; John Paterson, Ph.D., Multimin consultant and retired animal science professor and beef Extension specialist at Montana State University; and Cadra Krueger, Ph.D., beef nutritionist with BluePrint Targeted Nutrition.

Symposium Aids Producers in ‘Recovery After Drought’ “With what the consumer is looking for today, we felt like it was essential that we got into the sustainability market,” said Stanton. Where Food Comes From, Inc. launched its sustainability platform, Beef CARE, three years ago to add value for American beef producers. CARE focuses on husbandry, stewardship, people and community. IMI Global partners with the Red Angus Association of America in the Red Angus FCCP and Allied Access programs for age and source verification. “If you’re going to be utilizing additional programs down the road and looking at source, age, natural, sustainability or grass-fed, you need to be using EID as your method of identification,” explained Stanton. Verification programs, like CARE or the Red Angus FCCP program, give producers the opportunity to provide consumers with the traceability and information they desire while adding value to their products. Nutrition Panel Following Stanton, three nutrition experts gathered on stage to share their knowledge of feeding cattle through a drought. Panelists included John Paterson, Ph.D., Multimin consultant and retired animal science professor and beef Extension specialist at Montana State University; Brian Fieser, Ph.D., nutrition support specialist for ADM Animal Nutrition; and Cadra Krueger, Ph.D., beef nutritionist with BluePrint Targeted Nutrition. Feed costs are high, and producers are unlikely to see a change in forage and grain prices in the coming years. Properly managing cattle nutrition is especially critical during drought, not only for the sake of healthy cattle, but for financial well-being, too. The panelists highlighted the importance of truly understanding what cattle are eating. 66

RED ANGUS Magazine |

“Make sure you know exactly what you are feeding your cows, so you know exactly how to supplement them,” said Krueger. “You can prevent issues, like low conception rates, because you are making sure calves are getting exactly what they need.” Fieser said, “If you’re not testing feeds, you cannot financially or accurately supplement cattle. And in a drought, that becomes critical.” Producers can seek forage and feed testing through their local extension agent, often free of charge. In addition to testing forages, understanding protein and mineral supplementation is key to a successful nutrition program.

Jordan Shockley, Ph.D., broke down the structure of carbon markets.

Producers should also be aware of – and ready to treat – a variety of toxicities as cattle begin to graze on plants they may not normally eat when lush, green grass is readily available. Purchasing stored forages can be a way to keep cattle from eating toxic plants. “If you don’t know what you’re feeding there is no way you can accurately feed cattle,” said Fieser. Carbon Credits The second half of the day offered cattle producers insight into the buzzing new conversation surrounding carbon markets. Jordan Shockley, Ph.D., associate Extension professor and farm management specialist at the University of Kentucky Department of Agricultural Economics, presented an overview of the structure of carbon markets. Global corporations are making voluntary pledges to reach carbon neutrality for the same reason cattle producers are enrolling in sustainability verification programs – the socially conscious consumer. Carbon markets provide an opportunity for producers to enroll in a program and adopt regenerative or sustainable practices in return for a profit.

November 2023

Chad Martin, vice president of cattle procurement for Tyson Foods Fresh Meat division, said Tyson has pledged a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. “By definition, a carbon credit is one metric ton of CO2 equivalent that gets sequestered into the soil,” Shockley said. “If you sign a contract to adopt certain practices that will generate a carbon credit, then in one way, shape or form, the aggregator turns around and gets those credits verified,” he said. “Those go into the marketplace, and they may get purchased by those Fortune 500 companies that are pledging greenhouse gas emission reductions.” Current carbon credit programs for beef cattle operations include opportunities for producers to adopt holistic land management practices, like regenerative grazing or climate-smart initiatives.

Symposium Aids Producers in ‘Recovery After Drought’ Learning more about carbon markets and carbon credits opens the door for producers to earn additional profit to supplement the income from their operation. Carbon Credit Updated for Value-Added Programs Chad Martin, vice president of cattle procurement for Tyson Foods Fresh Meat division, continued the carbon markets discussion. Tyson has pledged to have a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, according to Martin. In an effort to achieve this goal, Tyson launched a climate-smart beef program known as Brazen Beef. This program not only benefits the socially conscious consumer but also incentivizes farmers and ranchers to implement sustainable practices in their operations. According to Martin, enrolling in the climate-smart program and adopting new practices makes your operation more sustainable, able to be passed along to further generations and overall generates more profit.

Producer Panel: Rancher’s Point of View C.J. Blew, Ronny Pope and Steve Wooten wrapped up the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium by offering their key takeaways from the day. Blew, of Hutchinson, Kansas, recognized the importance of building flexibility into his family’s cattle operation. “We learned from the drought and are going to take a different approach moving forward,” said Blew.

Lane Nordlund of Western Ag Network emceed the symposium.

“We learned from the drought and are going to take a different approach moving forward.”

Wooten, of southeast Colorado, said that he has worked to design his cattle program to operate one year ahead. In times of environmental distress, like a drought, planning his program so there is another year of grass banked even when the grass is all dried up has eased some stress.

Pope, of Limon, Colorado, also emphasized the importance of flexibility. He noted that in order to maintain profitability, especially during a drought, producers should diversify their operations and be willing to change traditional practices to adapt to the

environment. “This too will pass,” said Pope. “Look around the corner. Be diverse.”

Nordlund moderated the closing panel that featured C.J. Blew, Ronny Pope and Steve Wooten who offered their point of view as ranchers who faced drought conditions.

How to Enroll in FCCP and AA 1. The producer contacts the Red Angus Association of America at 940-477-4593 and answers a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. RAAA staff will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, the producer may be asked to supply additional documentation on breeding such as semen receipt, lease agreements or information on purchased females. 2. After all documentation is recorded, staff will ship the tags directly to the producer who must tag the calves before they leave the ranch of origin – birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning or before loading on the semi. 3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return to RAAA with a copy of their calving records. 4. Staff will issue the USDAapproved Certificate of Compliance upon receiving the customer enrollment agreement and calving record.

Technology Saves Time and Time is Money by Nate Smith, General Manager, Top Dollar Angus, Inc. In the words of Winston Churchill, the great political leader and orator, “Time is one thing that can never be retrieved.” This reality is all around us – we deal with it every day. It is the biggest variable in the world that everyone must work hard to manage. Why? Because we all know that TIME IS MONEY! How are we creating more of the precious commodity of time? Implementing new technology and tools is how we save time. This rule applies to everything from the phone in your pocket to health and genetic data in the beef industry. The email app on your smartphone shortened the amount of time it took for you to see that informative eBlast about the weather or the market. No longer did you have to use your desktop computer to log in to AOL.com – what you needed to know was right there in the palm of your hand. The innovation of EPDs in the beef world allowed a useful prediction – available immediately after birth – of how an animal would perform throughout its lifetime, rather than waiting for years to discover the actual results. Culling a bull with a high birth weight EPD saves a lot of expensive hours in a calving barn, which, as we all know, are not always pleasant. The list of time-saving technologies could literally go on for eternity. However, let us shift gears and discuss why it is time to embrace a few specific, high-impact innovations.

RED ANGUS Magazine |

One core piece of technology that we continue to see producers requesting is actually not mentioned previously. This specific practice saves time and applies to everyone in the beef industry and, most likely, you do not think of it as a technology. What am I referencing? The communication of animal information and health data. Beef Quality Assurance and vaccination treatment history have been demanded by the industry for years, because sick cattle neither grow nor grade well. Well-structured health programs are now commonplace among commercial cow-calf ranches, but much of that history is shared on a piece of paper or by word of mouth. Sometimes it is not shared at all with prospective buyers. The lack of efficient information sharing on feeder cattle ends up being costly to both buyers and sellers. Fortunately, the tools to change this are already available. Electronic identification systems, while not for everyone, reward those that are able to provide health information more rapidly. Accelerating the process of confirming health status and genetic information is a primary driver of increasing value. Time is money and every minute sorting or doctoring cattle reduces returns. The verification and sharing of animal information and health data may not

appear relevant to all producers, but it is. To those downstream in the supply chain, ranchers that do efficiently share necessary information are a breath of fresh air. They enable those who purchase their cattle to both manage the cattle better and save time along the way. Therefore, the bottom-line question for cow-calf producers is this: Are you efficiently sharing the right nutrition, health and genetic information on the feeder calves you are marketing? Prospective buyers want to know. To learn more on how participating Top Dollar Angus feedlots see the value of shared animal data, please reach out to me at any time. //

Interested in getting genomic-enhanced EPDs on your cattle? Want more data on your registered females? Get involved in the

The Rally research collaboration between RAAA and Neogen is designed to increase phenotypic data collection and submission for mature weights, body condition scores and genotypes on Red Angus females. Female genotype and phenotype information helps to improve genetic predictions and overall data on your Red Angus herd. This is a really great opportunity to receive genotyping at a reduced rate.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Registered females only • Must test 90% of females on active inventory - Already genotyped females can count toward this 90% • There is also no cap on herd size, as long as the 90% requirement is met, so this program is tailored to small and large producers • Samples submitted for the Rally need to be TSUs (tissue)

BY PARTICIPATING IN THE RALLY YOU WILL RECEIVE:

• GGP100K (GGP-LD) testing for $22 (regularly $50) - OS and MA testing can be added for $2/test; other defect testing is normal pricing • $5 Age Rebate - At completion of testing, you will receive a one-time reimbursement of $5 for females submitted that are 6+ years old (circa 2016) • $5 Phenotype Rebate - Submit both Mature Cow Weights (MCW) and Body Condition Scores (BCS) for a one-time reimbursement - Must be on every cow that weans a calf that season - Must be within a week of calf weaning date - You don’t have to apply for the rebates if you don’t want to; these are just additional ways to save money!

A graduate of Woodruff High School and Clemson University, Meadows was an animal geneticist dedicated to improving the quality and industry standard for beef cattle. He was the director of the Clemson University Bull Test Station, and he is fondly remembered by cattle breeders, students and constituents for spending a lifetime of helping cattle farmers in South Carolina, as well as mentoring future generations through his involvement with the junior cattleman’s and other agricultural associations. Practical Cattle Born & Raised in the Southeast

The selection program at Red Hill is planned to “improve the profitability of our commercial bull customers.” The program begins by selecting to improve ‘user-friendly’ or ‘convenience’ traits. However, at Red Hill, selection for Calm Disposition, Calving Ease, Functional Udders and Sound Foot and Leg Structure are ‘basic, core or foundation traits’ in our evaluation process. It is our goal to not only supply bulls that are genetically superior for growth and carcass characteristics but bulls that transmit genetic traits that make beef production enjoyable! Contact us for a catalog that features moderate, easy-fleshing, problem-free cattle!

204X has a perfect udder

Disposition is more than a convenience trait!
