Pick from 70 open heifers (to be selected and picked up by June 30, 2021) Bull Hill Ranch is a Red Angus seedstock operation owned by Jim and Alvina Meeks in upstate South Carolina, running 150 registered 1A Red Angus and 40 commercial females. They market bulls, heifers, semen and embryos in their January production sale, private treaty and in consignment sales. They also raise feeder calves, having produced over 200,000 pounds of Natural Red Angus beef products sold to natural markets, restaurants and individual consumers. They began in 1991 with the purchase of five females from the Prescott herd in Georgia and grew by purchasing females from many top breeders throughout the southeastern United States, including the acquisition of the Enfinger Red Angus herd in Florida, a leader in the business for over 30 years with an emphasis on growth, adaptability and maternal strength. Natural service sires for Bull Hill Ranch were originally selected from the Leachman, Bieber, Boot Jack, Green Mountain, Gill, Pieper and Gilchrist Red Angus programs. All cows calve in about 90 days beginning in November. The goals of the ranch are to produce efficient, eye appealing cattle that will excel in the economically relevant traits while living in the demanding, hot and humid environment of the Southeast. The ranch has been recognized as SC Seedstock Producer of the Year and as a Red Angus Grid Master. Pick from 85 open heifers (to be selected by November 14, 2020) Cedar Hill Red Angus purchased their first Red Angus bull in 1996, expanding to over 200 head of registered 1A Red Angus. They are a cooperator with R.A. Brown Ranch, selling their top-performing bulls in their annual sales. They were instrumental in establishing the Mountaineer Red Angus Classic in April, where they offer several quality females. They also sell via private treaty yearround and host an annual production sale in November. Cedar Hills’ commercial-focused management practices, West Virginia’s wide variation in weather, rugged environmental conditions with steep, hilly terrain and unimproved native fescue pastures demand adaptability and functional traits within their cowherd. Their herd is managed under low-input commercial cattle conditions and is built upon performance data with a focus on docility, productivity, low input and overall quality. They utilize multiple trait selection and cull for undesirable structure, fertility and disposition, and utilize the latest sciences to enhance performance data accuracy – GE-EPDs, carcass ultrasound on replacement heifers and $Profit. They strive to maintain large, correctly sorted contemporary groups to assure accurate data. “Living the Brand” 20x24 Canvas Donated by Carla Leland Branding calves is a western tradition that originated with the need to prevent cattle rustling. Today, ranchers still brand their calves to identify ownership, but the mark is also a source of pride for well-mated genetics and quality stock. Neighbors join together to work each other’s calves each spring. The day of hard work is also a social event for ranching communities to visit and catch up. The smell of singed hair permeates the crew but also represents a legacy and tradition rooted in necessity and pride. Photographer Carla Leland is based in western North Dakota/ eastern Montana. She has always enjoyed photography but expanded her skills when she married and moved to her husband’s third-generation family ranch, Leland Red Angus. She captures images for the ranch’s advertising campaigns and sale catalog and started taking more photos of the working cowboy on the ranch and in the arena after the couple’s sons were born. Carla loves the western lifestyle and appreciates the opportunities to capture them as “The Cowboy Paparazzi.” Visit her website and online photo gallery at www.carlalelandphotography.com.
