Board Commentary

Progressing With Price Equity and Genetic Excellence

As my tenure as RAAA board president comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on Red Angus in general. The one consistent theme that keeps resonating with me is the fact that Red Angus are Angus, and that statement cannot be repeated enough. Market equity is, and for good reason, the No. 1 priority at Red Angus. Your staff and leadership work tirelessly on this subject every day and we are making progress.

Again, Red Angus are Angus, both genotypically and phenotypically. The Red Angus breed embodies all the same qualities of any Angus or Angus-influenced animals that have rightly propelled Angus genetics to be the cornerstone of the beef industry. I assure you the leadership of Red Angus remains committed to not only maintaining the principles that brought this breed this far, but also raising the standards to keep this breed at the forefront of the beef industry.

Addressing market equity for Red Angus cattle is a huge task. Thankfully, higher prices this fall lessen the impact slightly. Red Angus leadership have developed an industry-wide task force with the goal of working through ideas, formulating a plan and implementing this plan to remove hide color as a quality identifier and price indicator – this is a monumental task.

Changing the beef industry will require a large contingency of producers banding together. Only the industry can change the industry. The Genetic Merit Pricing Task Force has multiple founding members from several segments of the industry and will begin its work this fall. Stay tuned for more information on this groundbreaking movement in the near future.

Over the past nine years serving the Red Angus breed in a leadership role, I have witnessed over and over again the impact of high-quality genetics and I challenge all, whether you are seedstock or commercial, to keep raising the bar. Combining comprehensive breeding philosophies, sound advice and genetic research can transform this breed and take it to heights only found in our dreams.

As I step down as Red Angus board president, I do so with a sense of pride watching a breed not only survive, but thrive during one of our nation’s largest droughts. Red Angus inventories are up, prices for these genetics are increasing and the quality of Red Angus cattle is skyrocketing.

Kudos to all for raising the bar. Together we can overcome all challenges thrown our way and, like I have always believed about this breed of cattle, we are led by Divine guidance!

I have unwavering confidence in the RAAA, the cattle and the people raising them. Let’s remain vigilant in our pursuit of excellence, stay united in the cause and remain the light in the beef industry that shines on prosperity for years to come.

I will leave you with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt: “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”

Whistle, grin and ride! //

Red Angus DNA Testing on the Upswing

DNA testing is an important part of the seedstock business – some believe it has already become an everyday tool that is required for success. Breeders increasingly realize the importance of accurate pedigrees in their herds, and they further understand that genotyping their cattle leads to more accurate EPDs and better mating decisions. Testing cattle via DNA helps in both areas.

During recent years, Red Angus members have more actively engaged in DNA testing. The table shows a few numbers to put the upswing into perspective. The COVID-19 pandemic slowed our growth somewhat, but the past five years still produced a 53% increase in parentage testing, 9% growth in genotyping and an 18% increase in total samples processed by the RAAA.

Commercial Marketing Team and Value-Added Programs staff is on page 10

Parentage Testing

It goes without saying that without an accurate pedigree, cattle evaluation, both phenotypically and genetically, is diminished. Suppose a registered replacement heifer is sired by a different bull than what her pedigree indicates. She may end up being bred to a sire that is a close relative, when the breeder was intending to make an outcross mating.

Her EPDs will also be off the mark, because the foundation of EPD calculation is the EPDs of the parents, which in this example are at least partially incorrect. Pedigree errors weaken the Red Angus genetic evaluation as recorded data (birth weights, weaning weights, ultrasound scans, etc.) are matched to wrong animals.

As any breeder who has used DNA parentage testing will attest, we often do not know where the errors are, how to correct them or even that they exist at all, until we use science to identify the correct sire and dam.

Breeders appreciate DNA to move their herds forward by trio-verifying parentage of animals as well as genotyping them for more accurate EPDs.

Association Commentary: Red Angus DNA Testing on the Upswing

Genotyping

A simple definition of a genotype is a DNA test that is taken for the purpose of generating specific information on the animal’s genetics that will be used to make that animal’s EPDs more accurate. A genotype looks inside the genome of each tested animal for known genetic markers that affect important traits. Marker results are then used to calculate more accurate EPDs on the genotyped animals (Note: A genotype is also often used to verify parentage).

The table illustrates how many “progeny equivalents” a genotype is worth. In other words, the EPD accuracy added by a genotype is equivalent to the phenotypic data recorded on certain numbers of progeny. There is variation in these estimates from one trait to another. However, in all cases, a genotype adds useful information leading to more accurate EPDs. In the case of a young animal, even before it becomes a parent, genomically enhanced EPDs will reflect greater accuracies “as if” they already had progeny data recorded.

Much more could be discussed about the importance of DNA testing in seedstock herds. Defects can also be monitored and, ultimately, eliminated. RAAA processes approximately 7,000 defect tests per year. It is of obvious importance that influential sires be tested and found to be free of all known defects.

Top breeders often tell us that they are moving their herds toward a two-fold goal. First, they want every animal trio-verified for parentage, meaning that the sire and dam have been DNA verified as the parents of that animal. Second, they intend that every animal in their herd has been genotyped and carries more accurate EPD estimated as a result.

Those may be lofty goals. However, as the uptrend in Red Angus DNA testing reveals, more breeders are finding a place for active DNA testing in their seedstock programs and are reaping the benefits through more accurate breeding decisions. //

Marketing Update Quality Matters

The return to the good ole days of high calf prices, like those seen in 2014 and 2015, has arrived. Calf prices recently are unlike anything we’ve ever seen before and will forever be etched in producers’ memories.

As video sale season reaches its halfway mark, producers finally are seeing the tables turn to their favor. Tight cattle numbers and high demand for quality red meat has put power in the rancher’s hands. Cattlemen and women have more bargaining power than they have ever had before.

More bargaining power does beg the question, “When will that come to an end?”

Will that be when cattle numbers get back up to where supply is in line with demand? Historically, the tendency is when prices are high, producers are easier on culling. Whether it be breeding stock or steer calves, we at times let those dollar signs more heavily impact our culling decisions and lose focus of high quality.

I am not claiming that we as Red Angus producers should throw culling out the window and send junk through the ring. The idea behind this is when prices are high and total herd numbers are low, we tend to hang on to those lower performing animals because we know we can get just as good of a price for them as our best. The concept is not wrong, but when we look towards the future of overall performance and genetics, holding on to those lower performing animals could be the reason we have one less bid on sale day, whether it’s selling bulls or feeder calves. The culling decisions we make today will follow us for the next few years.

The question I am constantly asked this summer, and now as we start thinking about the fall feeder calf run is, “How much are buyers still going to focus on quality and value-added programs, when numbers are so tight?”

The focus on quality and genetics is still highly important. After visiting with several feedyards and buyers, they emphasize the importance of high-quality calves that are low-risk for them. They are still going to buy those lower quality animals, but the most important concept to remember is these buyers are tracking the performance of animals going in to the yards from start to finish. If they receive a group of calves that lack performance and are poor in health, the likelihood of them being willing to give a premium for next year’s calf crop is very slim.

Now more than ever, data is pulled from all aspects of the calf’s life and is used in making the following year’s buying decisions. So, when producers lose focus of quality and the implementation of value-added programs, they may be making more money when the market is high, but when we hit another low, those previous buyers may not be as willing to purchase your calves.

Reading this can be a tough pill to swallow, but if we as producers want to continue pushing forward and breaking down the hide color bias, then even in the good times of high prices we cannot forget about how much today’s culling decisions will affect us in the future. Quality matters and Red Angus producers continue to better their genetics growing more value to their herd, and I hope as we ride the wave of these high prices, we continue to focus on top quality genetics. //

RAAA Call for Grid Master Data

Early summer is harvest season for the majority of the nation’s fed cattle. Cattlemen and feeders are now reflecting on the carcass data from this year’s crop. Producers whose cattle are enrolled in RAAA’s Feeder Calf Certification Program may submit their carcass data to be considered for the distinguished Grid Master award.

The RAAA recognizes Grid Master winners who demonstrate the capability of Red Angus cattle to consistently grade Choice or higher while maintaining low levels of Yield Grade 4s and 5s. By collecting carcass data, producers improve their reputation as progressive cattlemen and feeders. They may also utilize the carcass information to make improved breeding decisions in their cow herd. The Grid Master award recognizes excellence in the commer-

cial cattle feeding industry, and only those who have successfully combined superior Red Angus genetics, feeding management skills and precise marketing will earn the award.

Red Angus or Red Angus-influenced cattle enrolled in the FCCP or Allied Access program may be entered for the Grid Master award. Cattle must have been harvested between July 1, 2022, and Sept. 1, 2023. Both conventionally and naturally fed cattle are eligible.

Conventionally fed cattle must be marketed in lots of at least 30 head, achieve a minimum of 90% Choice and Prime, have a maximum of 10 percent Yield Grade 4s and 5s and a minimum grid score of 100. Naturally fed cattle must also be in lots of 30 or greater, achieve a minimum of 90%

Choice and Prime, with a maximum of 15 percent Yield Grade 4s and 5s and a minimum grid score of 100.

RAAA will recognize Grid Master winners in the Red Angus Magazine, and honor them at the 2023 National Red Angus Convention in Denver, Colorado, Sept. 13-15.

To apply for a Grid Master award, submit your harvest data to Josh Taylor, commercial marketing specialist, at josh@redangus.org. For further questions, please contact Josh via email or phone, 918-605-5139. //

Breed Improvement

Navigating to Success

Within the seedstock industry, there are many priorities to accomplish during a year for a given producer. When comparing these responsibilities to the ones commercial producers take on, the order of significance tends to change. Looking closer at these priorities, DNA testing tends to not rise to the top of list for most commercial operations. Often, this is due to the cost of the DNA testing not outweighing the benefits. But what if the costs were drastically reduced and the information gained a great benefit?

Red Navigator is one of the DNA testing programs offered by RAAA that is specifically designed for commercial producers. Red Navigator provides vital genetic information on Red Angus-influenced commercial females who are tested through this program. This means that the animals tested do not have to be purebred, fullblood or Category 1A animals to be tested. The animals should be at least 50% Red Angus, with a preference towards females who are 75% Red Angus. The given breed percentage ensures that the genetic test can correctly identify the genetic markers or information that coincides with the estimation for the provided traits.

So, what information does Red Navigator provide? Just parentage testing? Producers who utilize this program will receive genetic information on their tested females in the form of EPD values, individual percentile rank as compared to the herd, as well as individual percentile rank as compared to all other Red Angus genotyped animals. Thus, indexes such as GridMaster and HerdBuilder, as well as traits such as Calving Ease Direct, Weaning Weight and Stayability, etc., that are currently listed on REDSPro are included in the results for the tested animals. So, to answer the earlier question: No, the determination of parent qualification is not the only information a producer would receive with their results, but rather a suite of selection tools to utilize in breeding and culling decisions for their operation.

Remember, a few articles back, we discussed the importance of both sides in the herd, meaning considering both the males

and the females. For many commercial producers, buying a new sire is not usually an annual task – for some, it may be more of a task that happens every five or eight years. Thus, the ability to make significant gains in genetic progress relies on the replacement females kept in the herd.

The Red Navigator program enables a producer to have access to which females in the tested group outperform the others and which fall below a given threshold. This allows for easier culling decisions to be made, as well as which breeding decisions may best complement these females. Ultimately, instead of just focusing on the sire to make their operation’s profit goals increase, commercial producers can adjust their focus to include the cow herd as well.

Finally, let’s break down the costs. The Red Navigator test costs $22 dollars per female. This includes the parent qualification and the resulting information described above. Moreover, testing for OS and MA can be added to the form for $2 per defect per animal. So, for $26, producers can get genomic information, defect testing for two defects and parent qualification on their cow herd.

Remember though, DNA kits would still be needed to collect the samples from the animals, in the form of blood cards, hair cards or tissue sampling units. These can be ordered through the RAAA DNA department at $1 per blood or hair card or $3 per TSU. Ultimately, the Red Navigator program is a tremendous deal for commercial producers looking to further evaluate the females in their herds. Genetic gain can come with some additional costs, but the benefits gained will far exceed them!

If you would like to get started with the Red Navigator program, please don’t hesitate to find the Red Navigator DNA order form at RedAngus.org > Genetics/DNA > Red Navigator. Furthermore, if you have any additional questions about Red Navigator or DNA testing in general, call the office to speak with the RAAA DNA department for more information at 940387-3502, Ext. 8 or email at dna@redangus.org. //

No Progeny? No Problem!

Between work, life and calves running around, sometimes making sure all your calf crop data is reported to RAAA gets overlooked. We want to work with you to help avoid missing any data and being able to collect as much data to further the Red Angus breed!

The No Progeny report is simply a report and notification to let one know what data needs to be reported. This notification of any cows on your account without calf data or a reason code on file for fall 2022 was sent to you via email or mail in August. Failure to report data for the cows listed on this report will result in them being inactivated on Oct. 27, 2023, at 8 a.m. MDT. Reactivation fees will apply.

Step 1: Log into REDSPro > go to Data Entry > Online.

Step 2: Click on Manual Job tab.

Step 3: Give this job a title.

Step 4: Choose Animal Data Reporting as the job type.

Step 5: Locate the preload animals box on the right side, scroll towards the bottom of the list and choose the group labeled Fall No Progeny_2022.

Step 6: Under the preload animals box, find the two listed options: As Animals or As Dams. Select As Dams to have the group loaded into the dam columns.

Step 7: Click start new job.

***When you enter the job, any cows should be loaded into the left side of the spreadsheet and the rest of the spreadsheet should appear mostly blank. If your spreadsheet is fully filled in from left to right, the job has been started incorrectly and Step 6 was missed. Please delete the job and retry the steps.

Once in the job, it should look similar to Image 2. If you have calf data from 2022 to report follow Step 8.

Step 8: Starting at the Animal ID column, fill in calf information from the missing year you are reporting. Work your way to the right, filling in as much as you can.

Note: It is required by THR to report on each cow, each year. Calves that were sold commercially, died, were sold after birth or those you do not wish to register must be recorded.

Choose registration type C, Compute, in the REG column. If you have a cow that did not have a calf to report, see the next steps below.

If you have cows in this job that do not have calf data from the previous year, assign them a reason code as to why they do not have a calf in order to adhere to THR requirements.

Step 9: Click the BrthDam tab at the top of the spreadsheet.

Step 10: Towards the right of the spreadsheet, find the Reason Code column and select the closest, appropriate reason that cow did not have a calf.

Step 11: The next column to the right is Reason Code Year. It is required when reporting a reason code and must be filled in with the year you are NOT reporting a calf (ex. 2022 for the Fall 2022 No Progeny

Report).

Step 12: When you are done recording information for each cow click Continue to Next Step > Continue to Next Step* > Final Submit.

Fall 2022 No Progeny is due Oct. 2, 2023. Inactivations will happen Oct. 27, 2023, at 8 a.m. MDT.

Growth Across the Board

The 2022-23 fiscal year was completed June 30 and saw the beef industry finally experiencing the stars align near the second half of 2023. The beef cow inventory continues to decline, consumer demand for red meat is on the rise, and finally the markets are benefiting commercial cattlemen and women.

Red Angus posted a year with growth in many segments. Work focusing on the Strategic Plan continues to push open marketing avenues and is starting to change the process of feeder calf differentiation.

Membership in RAAA grew to 4,792 members – RAAA, associate and juniors combined – this fiscal year. Year after year, we have seen a continual rise of new members and the influx of Red Angus enthusiasts brings in fresh ideas allowing us to better the breed. As part of the total number of members, our junior members comprise 1,365 of the 4,792. This is a huge accomplishment to our staff and volunteers who continue guiding our juniors to success and giving them opportunities to grow within Red Angus.

Even in the midst of much of the country struggling with extreme drought conditions, our total registrations remained steady at 66,406 females. Cattlemen and women are reminded of how valuable Red Angus females are this year and saw their resilience through this drought, allowing them to maintain and grow the herd.

The commercial marketing team experienced many challenges and changes at the end of the fiscal year. Our team is seeking a new director for the department and two other key positions.

Even with those large shoes to fill, our small but mighty team continues to stay above water pushing forward with the same visions and goals Harold Bertz instilled in us. Despite the vacancies, we were able to observe yet again a record-breaking bull sale season for Red Angus. Our team saw 1,163 head average $5,679 during fall 2022 and 7,686 head averaging $5,636 during spring of 2023.

The data shows commercial producers continue to focus and seek out balanced-trait bulls that check all the boxes and accomplish multiple improvements in their herds.

Red Angus value-added programs have maintained close to the same total as the previous fiscal year even with huge herd reductions. This year, Jeananne Drouhard enrolled 141,040 head in the Feeder Calf Certification Program and 20,680 head in Allied Access.

All-Natural Success: Hicks – Didlot Cattle Company

was a suit-wearing businesswoman flying across the country every week for work when she inherited her family’s cattle operation in southwest Oklahoma.

“I was one of those kids that was never going to be on the farm,” said Didlot. By her personal choice, she left the farm, pursued a business degree at Oklahoma State University and entered the corporate world.

After she married her husband, Dale, he was sent to Desert Storm, prompting Didlot to go back to the family farm in Altus, Oklahoma, where the Hicks – Didlot family raises cattle, cotton and wheat on 700 acres. When she returned to the farm, she could not help but get attached to the lifestyle.

“My dad raised primarily Brangus cattle and mixed breeds,” Didlot said. “He would just buy a load and keep a few cows back, so I grew up doing that.

“When I came back, my dad paid me in cows because he wanted to pay me for helping him. I said, ‘I’ll just take a cow.’ So, I picked out a heifer and I started my herd, and she happened to be red with a spot on her head.”

Since that first red heifer, Didlot has taken over her family’s operation and now runs a commercial Red Angus herd with her husband.

“Dale and I bought some land in conjunction with this farm that my dad had been farming.” Didlot explained. “Because we don’t have kids, we bought land and we just started growing our herd that way.”

When the Didlots started growing their herd 15 years ago, they faced the area’s challenging terrain and climate – significant drought, with limited water resources and no shade.

As with all cattle producers, the Didlots needed their cows to produce offspring each year for the operation to continue to be successful, but they were facing reproductive challenges during the drought.

“We ran mostly black cattle at that time,” Didlot said. “We had a significant issue with cattle breeding in this heat and without the shade.

“We actually did a little self-study, if you will, because we had predominantly red cattle on one pasture and predominantly black cattle in another. When we did the study, I had a 30% open rate on my black cows, and we had less than a 10% open rate on the Red Angus.”

Her observations confirmed her assumption that red cattle were going to perform better in the southwestern Oklahoma climate.

After discovering first-hand the heat tolerance of red cattle, Tammi and Dale shifted the focus of their herd towards predominantly Red Angus. When they purchased or kept replacement females they had one main requirement — they had to be red. Today, 80% of their herd is Red Angus and that number will continue to increase.

As the Didlots continue to strengthen their herd, they are selecting for easily

manageable traits to sustain the profitability of their operation. By implementing DNA testing, they can put a focus on better herd genetics.

The Hicks – Didlot Cattle Co. consistently selects for docility and the gentle demeanor of Red Angus cattle is the perfect fit.

“We’re not getting younger, and we don’t have a lot of kids just chomping at the bit to take over this ranch, so we want docile cattle,” Didlot said. “I think in the Red Angus breed, I’ve never seen bulls that have been more docile.”

When cow-calf producers look at the EPDs of a bull, they want a low birth weight and a high weaning weight. They want to produce a small calf to reduce complications during birth, but they also want that small calf to grow quickly and spend less time on feed. Compared to her experience with raising other breeds, Didlot recognizes the value of fast-growing red cattle.

Dale and Tammi Didlot own Hicks – Didlot Cattle Co. in Altus, Oklahoma, where they have incorporated technology and innovation to capitalize on premiums. In addition to maximizing genetic merit for profitability, Hicks – Didlot Cattle Co. markets their cattle in an all-natural program, which helps them receive a premium for their cattle.

All-Natural Success: Hicks – Didlot Cattle Company

“You can have a small calf, you can get a low-birth-weight bull and have a small calf, but they take off and grow quick. And I feel like of all the breeds, that’s one of the things I see in Red Angus more than others.”

In addition to maximizing genetic merit for profitability, Hicks – Didlot Cattle Co. markets their cattle in an all-natural program, which helps them receive a premium for their cattle.

When they came across the all-natural beef program through Power Plus five years ago, their program was already very close to the required standards.

“One of the things we didn’t do was wean at six months, so we waited six months to wean. We also had to start banding within 90 days.”

With a few simple switches and detailed record keeping, the all-natural program has served the Hicks – Didlot Cattle Co. well. Since starting the program, they have experienced four welfare audits and were approved at the second-highest level.

Didlot’s extensive involvement in the beef industry helps her shift production practices towards a more profitable and sustainable operation. Didlot has been a member of the American National Cattlewomen for more than 20 years, served on the executive committee and is a past president. Currently, she serves as the co-director of the Women in Ranching and Education Development committee.

“I didn’t have an ag degree, I had a business degree,” Didlot said. “So, my business degree taught me to surround yourself with smart people and continue to educate yourself.

“Being involved on a national basis and going to different states and different conventions, I was truly listening to what was being taught.”

Between groups like ANCW, Oklahoma Cattlemen and Farm Bureau, Didlot brought back multiple ideas to her operation. From production practices to new technology, her forward-thinking changes helped her find success in the cattle business.

“We do a lot of rotational grazing,” she said. “That’s one of the things we’ve implemented just from going to different trainings and classes. We also implemented some of the frost-free waterers. The cattle get clean, cool water which is much better for them.”

Hicks – Didlot Cattle Co. even upgraded their chute system and working facilities to handle their cattle in a more safe and efficient manner.

“We can now work everything we own in the same day without trailering anything,” she attested. “It’s safer for the cattle. It’s safer for us and it’s a time saver.”

While the Didlots have made changes to their operation, one thing remains consistent – their commitment to Red Angus.

“Obviously regionally, Red Angus was good for us here,” she said. “But overall, I mean the quality of the meat and some of the studies I’ve seen just have proved what I felt was the case.” //

Hicks – Didlot Cattle Co. has a major prerequisite for any replacements that are to be retained: they must be red.

Protect Your Herd from Parasites Year-Round

Fall will be here before we know it, and with it comes weaning, vaccinating and deworming. However, one expert said that Red Angus producers should be deworming when needed – not just in the fall and spring.

“One of the things beef producers need to get away from is deworming on a schedule, like in the fall and spring,” said Christine Navarre, Ph.D., professor in the school of animal sciences at Louisiana State University. “Figuring out when NOT to deworm is as important as when TO deworm.”

Young Calves More Heavily Impacted

Younger cattle are the age group producers should focus on, according to Navarre, simply because their immune systems aren’t as robust, and weaning can be a major stressor.

Young calves will show visible symptoms of a parasite infestation, such as looking thin, a rough hair coat and possibly diarrhea. Older cattle may not show outward signs of a parasite infestation unless there are other stressors, such as not getting enough nutrition. Young cattle are especially susceptible to blood-feeding parasites that can cause life-threatening anemia, according to research from Oklahoma State University. In some cases, if the stressors are bad enough, a parasite infestation can be deadly for cattle.

“Parasites are opportunistic, so they want to impact the calf’s immune system and take advantage of other stressors,” explained Navarre. “Depending on the stressors and

the parasite, parasites can cause an issue with gain and immunity for young calves.”

Even if cattle do not show outward signs of a parasite infestation, they may still be suffering from parasites, but on a sub-clinical level, according to Navarre.

“You may think the dewormer has worked and you don’t have a parasite problem, but then you have a bad winter, and you have cattle dying of parasites,” she further explained.

“You also want to pay attention to yearlings, stocker cattle and bulls,” she added. “Once females wean their first calf, you want to select for cattle that do well without dewormer. The only way to do that is not to deworm them.”

But there are some major exceptions to this recommendation, and each individual producer should work with their veterinarian for a specific parasite control program.

Parasite Resistance a Growing Problem

Navarre said that severe parasite resistance is becoming a problem across the U.S., because cattle producers are taking a blanket approach to deworming when the parasite load is more location dependent.

High $Profit Red

Using the $Profit Index is helping us find the best bulls and females to improve our herds. Using $Profit and $Ranch, we are able to find the animals that best balance all of the traits from growth to carcass and fertility. Additionally, $Profit gives us EPD tools that we otherwise would not have.

There is little better than a Red Angus cow with a perfect udder!

In addition to a cow’s fertility and mothering ability, having the udder quality to last a lifetime is vital. On the other hand, few things disappoint more than seeing a below-par udder on a first calf heifer.

With the Zoetis Teat & Udder Combined EPD, you improve both teat shape and attachment. If you are an udder fanatic, you will love our Teat & Udder Combined EPD.

Other EPDs currently available to $Profit Share Partners: Claw Shape, Scrotal, Pulmonary Arterial Pressure, Mature Daughter Weight and Feed to Gain.

It’s all about producing the best possible Red Angus. Now, these traits are all available to commercial ranchers via the Zoetis Inherit Select ® test. Pick your replacements using this powerful tool!

Protect Your Herd from Parasites Year-Round

“I get parasite resistance failure calls from across the country – nobody is immune to it,” she said. “The cookbook deworming programs used in the beef industry for years are no longer working, because we’re doing what we’ve always done. Cattlemen are giving products that are doing their cattle no good. We must deworm based on data, track how well products are working, use products properly and set up a program that will be sustainable in the long-term.”

Parasite issues also vary, depending on region and climate, Navarre explained. For example, cool-season parasites like the mild winters of the south and going dormant in the hottest parts of summer. Meanwhile, in the north, parasites will go dormant in the winter.

“You can’t think about parasites in a vacuum,” Navarre attested. “They have to be part of your entire management program.”

Protecting Your Herd

According to Navarre, the best way to check for parasites within a herd is to conduct periodic fecal egg testing year after year. She also recommended that beef producers get their veterinarians involved in parasite management as part of an overall strategy to manage herd health and stress management.

“Any time an animal dies, do a necropsy,” she encouraged. “Parasites might not have killed that animal, but you can identify parasite problems from what the necropsy finds internally.”

One example of a parasite problem that can only be determined through a necropsy is liver flukes, which Navarre

said more veterinarians are seeing in cattle in regions where they’ve never been before.

“When you submit fecals, make sure to ask for the number of eggs per gram in a fecal test,” she said. “Just informing you if the fecal test is positive or negative for parasites doesn’t tell you anything.”

Because parasites can be spread through grazing, that must also be included as part of a holistic management program, according to Navarre.

“If you manage your grass for the health of the grass and the health of the cattle, with a long-term approach, it will be better for controlling parasites,” she said. “Overgrazing is a problem for both the grass and parasite pick-up.”

Rotational grazing can be helpful, but parasite loads can vary depending on temperature and rainfall, so it’s not a silver bullet. Navarre recommended that cattle producers evaluate the quality of the pasture and supplement as needed.

“If cattle are receiving good nutrition through grass, supplementation, or both, parasites will be better controlled,” she said. “When adult cattle are in good body condition and on a good mineral program, they’re better able to fight off parasites.” //

“Figuring out when NOT to deworm is as important as when TO deworm.”

The Sustainability of the Ranch Horse

Joe Leathers doesn’t downplay the opportunity that currently lies at the feet of the western industry.

“All eyes are on us because of Yellowstone, and we have a unique opportunity because of this huge spotlight,” he emphasized.

Leathers, general manager of the historic Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas, attested that the attention the western industry has been getting the past few years is unprecedented and cattlemen and women, ranchers and horse owners shouldn’t hide their heads from the focus.

Animal rights activists, urban sprawl, policy decisions and environmental challenges are frequently addressed in the popular western-themed drama and, similarly, are realized daily by beef producers from all geographies and demographics.

However, in addition to a front row seat to the challenges experienced by ranchers, the massive audience Yellowstone has amassed has also been exposed to the art of the working ranch horse and its importance to the beef industry.

Four Legs Are Better Than Four Wheels

The Four Sixes Ranch, along with the Dixon Creek Ranch near Panhandle, Texas, are part of Burnett Ranches, LLC, and are spread across 260,000 acres in west Texas and are peppered with canyons, brush and draws. Leathers emphasized the need for good horses to run cattle.

“There’s no other way for us to gather cattle without horses – a four-wheeler won’t get where we need to go.”

Tyson Johnson, ranch manager of Sooner Cattle Co. in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, agrees with that mindset and added that in some ranch locations across the U.S., four-wheelers aren’t allowed, so horses are a necessity on the ranch.

From a non-mechanical standpoint, stewardship and animal well-being are of utmost importance to ranchers and using horses allows Leathers and others to handle the herd in a low-stress way that is safe for all parties involved.

“Animal rights groups are always looking at us,” said Leathers. “How we handle cattle has to do with the horses we use.”

Stewardship and animal well-being are of utmost importance to ranchers and using horses allows for a low-stress way that is safe for all parties involved.

The Sustainability of the Ranch Horse

Leathers explained through animal handling and horsemanship, his crew can strip 400 calves in 20 minutes because the cattle remain calm and the calves aren’t hot. A lowstress experience also ensures the herd won’t dread returning to that pen in the future.

Shawn Tiffany, owner of Tiffany Cattle Co. in Herington, Kansas, stresses that horses are a stewardship commitment and help his crew provide high-quality care to the cattle in their care. Tiffany Cattle Co. uses horses in every aspect of its operation, which includes both grass cattle and feedyards.

“Horseback is the best vantage point to evaluate and manage cattle. We don’t use four-wheelers at all with cattle because the fight or flight response is lowered with horses.

“We have a 0.7% death loss in the feedyard but the industry standard is 1.5% - 2%. The difference is partially due to pre-feedyard care but can also be attributed to spotting sick cattle earlier from horseback,” he continued.

Jed Roark, ranch manager of the O RO Ranch in Prescott, Arizona, which comprises nearly 260,000 acres and is home to 3,000 pairs, joins the choir when it comes to the necessity of horses on the ranch.

“The O RO is rough with mountain ranges and our borders are canyons. There is no way to work the ranch without a horse.”

“The ROs,” as it’s known throughout cattle country, requires its cowboys to ride company horses across the rough terrain. The horses raised and trained on the O RO, 2022 winner of the prestigious AQHA Best Remuda Award, are accustomed to the rugged environment and are better suited for that kind of ranch work than outside horses raised in alternative environments.

The Sustainability of the Ranch Horse Sustainability = Profitability

The role of a ranch horse as it relates to the sustainability of a ranch is often miscategorized. The necessity for working and managing cattle is not unnoticed, however, often overlooked is how the ranch horse enterprise contributes to the profitability, and consequently, the sustainability and longevity of a ranch.

“You have to start looking at horses as a business and not just a tool or a pet,” said Leathers. “Not all, but most operations don’t look at horses as part of a business model, they look at them like a crescent wrench or a pet.”

Leathers looks at all horses as a business and explained that when horses are used as a tool, their resale value is overlooked.

“If you buy a 2-year-old that was just started and ride him until he’s 8 years old, that horse is worth somewhere near $15,000. If you buy a four-wheeler and drive it for 15 years, eventually the seat falls off, it won’t start – what’s it worth then? Nothing.”

Leathers also warned against keeping 1,200-pound pets beyond their useful timeline – which is an error the Four Sixes, 1993 winner of the AQHA Best Remuda Award, does not commit.

Horses can be a sustainable and profitable part of a business model and not just a tool or a pet.

“If you keep that 2-year-old until he’s navicular and 18, what is he worth? Nothing. You’re better off selling before you reach that point. Keeping pets isn’t a business.”

Turner Armitage, manager of the equine program at the esteemed A Bar Ranch in Claremore, Oklahoma, attests that horses are a major component of the ranch’s business.

“Horses started out as a hobby for us, and we lost control,” he explained jovially. “Our goal is to raise these horses for an intended purpose and get them in the right hands.”

Steers sired by PIE EL GRANDE 7508 (#3838583) won the Top 100 contest. Semen available at $30/straw; volume & commercial discounts available.

The Sustainability of the Ranch Horse

The A Bar, winner of 2020 AQHA Best Remuda Award, raises horses to fit the lifestyles of those who ranch, rodeo and show. Additionally, they created a futurity incentive that precedes their sale every fall – a show for people to buy A Bar horses, train for a year and come back to showcase the genetics and their horsemanship.

Both Armitage and Roark admit there’s an opportunity cost to running horses as opposed to more cows.

“The horse business has to be profitable because a horse counts as 1.5 animal units. In order to be sustainable in the long run for the ranch, they have to be profitable.”

Armitage, who serves on the ranching committee for AQHA, said they are always working to manage the balance of raising cattle and horses but also constantly have the betterment of the land at the top of mind.

While it’s of utmost importance for many operations to use horses, preserving the western heritage and cowboy way of life also plays a role in their continued presence.

“The American cowboy is iconic – a cowboy isn’t a guy working with cattle. Part of the legacy and fabric of ranching is a cowboy horseback.”

Armitage, Johnson and Roark all agree to some extent but perhaps Roark put it best.

“I believe that God created cattle to make good horses.” //

Commercial Marketing from the Cattle Feeders Perspective

The phrase “commercial marketing” comes up in conversations with cow-calf producers about as often as we compare rainfall or temperatures in our areas. As with the weather, we discuss calf marketing in terms of how it impacts our specific operations. The need to share what our feeder calves brought this year is often our sole focus. During bull sale season, we speak about what seedstock suppliers are getting for their latest genetic offering. While this is not a negative by any means, it does leave a key piece of the beef marketing system out of the equation. That being how finished cattle are being marketed and how they dollar-up on the rail.

Fortunately, through relationships with our feeding clients, we know exactly how some groups of Top Dollar Angus verified cattle perform when they are marketed as finished cattle. For our purpose here, we will focus on a group of Top Dollar Angus Red Angus steers that were harvested earlier this year.

This group of steers originated in Nebraska. After weaning, they were purchased, relocated, fed out-of-state, then shipped back to the Tyson plant at Lexington, Nebraska, for harvest in mid-January 2023. To add context, these steers ranked in the top 13% for growth and carcass traits in the Top Dollar Angus genetic evaluation. Other programs they carried included GAP 4, NHTC, FCCP and natural.

Furthermore, they weighed approximately 600 pounds when marketed on Superior Livestock.

As these cattle were on feed, phone calls were made periodically to learn how they were performing. The feedlot manager shared that they maintained above average feeding performance, which was a plus, as they would not be getting help from a growth-promoting implant. We spoke a lot about how his local weather was affecting their feed intake and health. The discussion soon turned from how they were performing at the bunk to how he thought they would harvest. After learning the scheduled harvest date, all we could do was sit back and wait with a smile of anticipation.

Final carcass results can be seen in the accompanying table. These Top Dollar Angus steers came in with slightly more than 15% primes. The industry-average prime carcass percentage has been running near 9% since the first of the year. Current industry average choice carcass percentage is 73%, these calves were 81% choice. The current choice-select spread is more than $25 per hundredweight. Consequently, that extra 8% of choice carcasses adds real dollars to the bottom line. Only 3.5% selects were noted on this group of Red Angus steers, compared to an industry average of 13% to 14%. They also had impressive live and carcass weights for naturally fed cattle.

To say the least, this group of Top Dollar Angus qualified Red Angus steers were a winner for our client. The most important result is that the feeder made it clear that he would like to buy this rancher’s cattle again. As it turns out, he did exactly that!

One important part of commercial marketing is to think beyond the ranch and consider what is important to those further down the beef chain. Your feeder cattle will leave an impression on those who buy and feed them. Make sure that impression is positive!

If you have any interest in learning about other perspectives of beef cattle marketing, please reach out to me anytime. Happy Trails. //

Colby Lind Honored as Red Angus Herdsman of the Year

Colby Lind was selected as the 2023 Red Angus Herdsman of the Year at the National Red Angus Open Show during Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in early January 2023. Lind was presented with the award, which is kept secret until the presentation, prior to the selection of the grand champion open female.

“I am beyond humbled to be selected as Herdsman of the Year. To me, in our operation, this is not an individual award. It is the direct reflection of all of the hard work and dedication our entire family and crew puts in day in and day out,” said Lind.

Lind grew up in Rushford, Minnesota, and has spent the majority of his life there. He attended the University of Minnesota and majored in animal science and agricultural education while competing on the livestock evaluation team.

After graduation, he returned to Rushford and he and his wife, Tracy, started their herd in 2006. They chose the Red Angus breed because they saw it as a great opportunity to build a herd of high-quality cattle that thrive in a real

world setting but were also respected in the show ring.

Lind, along with Tracy and their three children, Tate, Channing and Laramie, have had much success since launching their herd more than 15 years ago.

They have been fortunate to hang many banners from the American Royal, NWSS, NAILE, FWSS and the Canadian Western Agribition but Lind

said the most rewarding accomplishment is to see genetics from their herd appear in pedigrees of cattle that are working for customers nationwide.

The Herdsman of the Year is presented to a hands-on individual who has most effectively presented his or herself in a professional manner while at the show. For Red Angus show results and to find out about upcoming events, visit www.RedAngus.org. //
