Red Butte Garden

This is my last newsletter column as the Executive Director of Red Butte Garden. This spring, after 17 years, I will be stepping back from that role. It has been a wonderful, rewarding experience for which I am deeply grateful. In my time here, I have learned that gardens attract nice, good people—whether they be as members, visitors, donors, volunteers, or staff. It seems that people who support and value public gardens are cut from a different and quite special cloth. I have been blessed to interact with and to get to know so many of you. Thank you all for making my time at the Garden so personally rewarding and special. In these 17 years, the Garden has made a great deal of progress due to the support of so many individuals and organizations. In a recent compilation of donors to all of the departments and units of the University of Utah from July 1, 2014 to January 28, 2020, Red Butte Garden led all other units of the University with 28,150 distinct donors, which was more than all of the main campus colleges and schools combined; more than all of the Health Sciences colleges, schools, institutes, and University Hospital combined; and more than University Athletics. The Garden also led all other units of the University in the number of distinct donations made during that time period. Interestingly, though, the Garden fell to 13th amongst University units in the total dollar amount of donations received. If the Garden were a political campaign, we would be the one funded by the $10, $25, and $50 gifts given at the grassroots level. Everything that has been built at the Garden has been funded by private donations. This speaks to the gratifyingly broad level of community support that the Garden receives from individuals and families throughout the community. Thank you all for that support and assistance. Yet, for all that has been done, I am leaving the Garden as a work in progress. As all gardeners know, that is the way it is with gardens. They are always changing—never static. For Red Butte Garden, some of that change, if it is to become all that it can be for Salt Lake County and for Utah, will likely include the building of an education center and several more gardens, the development of more horticultural, children’s, and family programs, and the solidification of the Garden’s financial future through endowment and planned gifts. Whatever the Garden’s future is fated to be, though, it will be determined by you and by the Garden’s next executive director. The University has conducted an extensive international search for that person and has selected, Jimmy L. Turner from the Royal Botanic Garden & Domain Trust, Sydney, Australia, to be the Garden’s next executive director. He is an internationally renowned horticulturist, garden enthusiast, passionate advocate for the importance and value of plants, and a great fit for leading the Garden forward. I know you will provide him with the same wonderful, generous, and warm support that you have given me during my time here. Red Butte Garden is young by the standards of public botanical gardens. As it continues its remarkable growth and matures over time, it has, with your continued support and assistance, the potential to become one of this country’s leading botanical gardens. I look forward to following its progress on that journey. I have truly been blessed to have had the honor and privilege of interacting with so many of you over the years and of working with the Garden’s staff and volunteers. Thank you all again for your many years of support.

Red Butte Garden

Red Butte Garden is the largest botanical garden in the Intermountain West, and together with the University of Utah, a state arboretum. The Garden is renowned for plant collections, themed gardens, over 500,000 springtime blooming bulbs, a world-class outdoor summer concert series, and awardwinning horticulture-based educational programs. 300 Wakara Way Salt Lake City, Utah, 84108 · 801.585.0556 Copyright © 2020 Red Butte Garden. HONORING GREGORY LEE It has been my pleasure to work with Greg Lee over the past 17 years, during which time I have come to know him well. He is without doubt among the most gifted administrators at the University of Utah. He combines keen intelligence with a laser-like focus on the mission of the Garden, impeccable personal integrity, and a dry and clever sense of humor. I will miss him greatly, as will countless staff, board members, volunteers, donors, and patrons. But I also know that his decision to retire at this time was made taking careful account of the well-being of the Garden. Red Butte Garden has thrived under Greg’s leadership. He leaves a remarkable legacy, including completion of the new Greenhouse headhouse; initiation of the multi-year planting program that has resulted in over 500,000 bulbs being planted at the Garden; renovation and expansion of the Amphitheatre; creation of the Rose Garden and Rose House; expansion of the Visitor Center; creation of the Water Conservation Garden; construction of the Horticulture Building; and funding and design for the soon-to-bebuilt Six Bridges Trail. During Greg’s tenure there have been over $25 million in capital improvements made at the Garden; the number of Garden members has tripled to over 11,000; the number of volunteers has more than doubled to over 400; concerts have increased by 250 percent; and the annual operating budget grew from $2.3 million to $11.2 million. redbuttegarden.org

Greg is well known at the University for his careful fiscal management and stewardship of resources. In a remarkable fiscal hat-trick, Greg has consistently generated impressive annual operating surpluses used to fund well over $500,000 of deferred maintenance, pay down $750,000 of inherited Garden obligations, and increase the Garden’s endowments from $1.2 million to $8.3 million. At the same time, he has increased staff salaries and overseen the funding of millions of dollars for operations, maintenance, and capital improvements. The Garden’s programs have flourished under Greg’s leadership. In addition to the widely-known growth of the concert series, the appearance of the gardens and facilities have improved; the Garden has become recognized as the sanctuary and home to over 130 species of native bees; programs like Garden After Dark, the Spring Plant Sale, summer camps, and statewide educational outreach have expanded; the Garden’s plant conservation research program has grown and improved, recently publishing important findings on the archeological and anthropological significance of a wild potato species possibly domesticated by native peoples thousands of years ago; and new collaborations were developed by the Garden's staff with other cultural organizations including the Sundance Institute, the Utah Symphony and Opera, and the Utah Shakespeare Festival. This is an impressive list of accomplishments, but Greg will be the first to Top: Zeke Dumke Jr., Jim Bach and Greg Lee, planning ahead tell you that it was a team effort, giving credit to those with whom he works. Bottom: Garden staff and Greg Lee, ribbon cutting ceremony for He has been a tireless advocate for his staff and leaves the Garden in the the Water Conservation Garden hands of a highly skilled and dedicated group of professionals. Cultural organizations rise or fall on the quality of their leadership. By all measures, Red Butte Garden has risen to remarkable new heights under Greg Lee’s leadership. On behalf of the many people who have worked with Greg over the years, I thank him for his dedicated service and wish him the very best in this new phase of his life. GIVE TO WHAT YOU LOVE Consider Red Butte Garden in your will

A bequest is a creative way to help the Garden in the long term while still retaining full control of your assets during your lifetime. Many donors and volunteers find that a bequest is an effective and simple way to make a lasting impact on the Garden. You can structure your bequest to leave a specific item or amount of money, make the gift contingent on certain events, or leave a percentage of your estate to Red Butte Garden. Just a few simple sentences in your will or trust are all that is needed. Let your legacy be our future. Please consider including a gift to Red Butte Garden in your will or living trust. For more information, contact Angela Wilcox, Major Gifts Officer, at 801.581.3813 or angela.wilcox@redbutte.utah.edu.

THANK YOU, BEEHIVE CHEESE Founded in 2005 by Tim Welsh and Pat Ford, Beehive Cheese is a locally owned, family-run business that makes artisan cheese with the milk of Jersey cows from a single Utah dairy. They will celebrate their 15th anniversary this March. As a long-time Red Butte Garden supporter and previous Advisory Board Chair, Welsh saw a unique way to contribute to the Garden by creating Red Butte Hatch Chile Cheese and then generously donating 3% of all of its sales to the Garden. Over the last two years, that 3% has added up to a whopping $32,000 donation. Made of Beehive’s delicious Utah cheddar tumbled with fresh diced Hatch Chiles on the inside and rubbed with dried Hatch Chiles, which turn red, on the outside—this cheese is popular for its creaminess with a kick. This year, cheese lovers can find Red Butte Hatch Chile Cheese and other awardwinning Beehive Cheeses at Associated Food Stores, Harmons, Smith’s, and Trader Joe's. Tim Welsh
