Red Butte Garden is the largest botanical garden in the Intermountain West and, together with the University of Utah, a state arboretum. The Garden is renowned for its plant collections, themed gardens, over 540,000 springtime blooming bulbs, a world-class outdoor summer concert series, and awardwinning horticulture-based educational programs.

Red Butte Garden

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant.” – Anne Bradstreet Winter will soon be coming to an end. I am confident that many of us are ready for spring and hopeful that the pandemic will soon be just a memory. Certainly this past year tested the resolve and resilience of our staff as we looked for new and innovative ways to keep the Garden open and funded during unprecedented times. Nothing could have prepared us for the challenges we have faced. Red Butte Garden was fortunate that we entered the year with enough fiscal strength to maintain operations, but our future was uncertain without the ability to resume the popular concerts, programs, and events that account for the majority of our revenue. We’ve all heard the saying “necessity is the mother of invention,” and this year it became our mantra at the Garden. I’ve learned a lot about our community and my staff in the last year, and I must say that I could not be prouder. Here are a few things that I’ve learned: • Red Butte Garden staff rallied and looked for every opportunity to save, reallocate, or find funds. Even with furloughs and cuts, our staff looked for inventive ways to keep the Garden growing and ready for our guests to enjoy. We were able to do the following outreach and engagement even in a year with limited visitation and funds: ▪ BOOtanical October festival thrilled 18,000 guests ▪ Boredom Busters provided more than a dozen hands-on activities for kids ▪ Botany Boxes delivered to 3,493 Utah students ▪ Contact-free spring and fall plant sales ▪ Grow Lab supplies delivered to 31 classrooms ▪ Implemented COVID protocols and reopened the Garden to welcome 50,990 guests ▪ On-demand content in production for six new learning opportunities ▪ 17 popular classes transitioned for online delivery ▪ Social media online content reached new levels of engagement ▪ Video tours gave weekly peeks of the Garden throughout the year ▪ Virtual Arbor Day inspired interactive education ▪ Virtual field trips hosted 61 groups • Our community takes care of its own. Utah and Salt Lake City highly value arts and culture, which fortunately includes Red Butte Garden. We were able to continue operations and keep the Garden open and staff employed for most of the year, in large part due to generous grants from ZAP, UServe, CREATE in Utah, and Salt Lake County Community Partners. • We have dedicated and caring members. The majority of our members renewed their memberships last year—even without the summer programs and concert series that we all look forward to. • Our Advisory Board and donors strongly believe in the Garden and its mission. Our “35 Days of Giving to Celebrate 35 Years of Growing” campaign collected an unprecedented $117,294. Our board members were especially generous with their donations and support. The past year made our roots grow deeper and stronger, which leads me to believe that 2021 will be even better. We’re hopeful that we’ll see the return of our acclaimed concert series and regain the ability to host weddings and events. We’re optimistic that our visitation numbers will increase this year and our beloved members and guests will come to the Garden this spring to see our amazing bulbs and blossoms. We have strengthened the bonds with our community and staff while opening up new opportunities for the Garden that you will see come to fruition in the upcoming seasons. A garden has the amazing ability to provide what we need most— solace, healing, entertainment, beauty, wonder. Whatever you may need in both times of trouble and joy can be found within nature’s beauty. Red Butte Garden will be here for you this spring and many springs to come. Thank you for your continued support and belief in our organization. I hope to see you in the Garden very soon.

GROWING AND GROWING Red Butte Garden Spring Plant Sale Nearly 30 years ago, the Garden hosted its first annual spring plant sale and fundraiser in the lower garden area that is now the amphitheatre. Building on the success of that first event, the spring sale has grown steadily over the years, becoming a much anticipated, one-stop shopping experience for expert and novice gardeners. Thanks to the planning and vision of Red Butte Garden horticulture director Marita Tewes, horticulture program manager Crystal Kim, and a talented horticulture team, the number of plants offered has grown each year as well as the diversity of the inventory. In the past five years alone, plant offerings have increased from 1,000 to 1,400 different species and cultivars. Heirloom vegetables and unique, hard-to-find native, waterwise, and pollinator-friendly plants are among the specialty selections that sell out quickly. Top: The plant sale display in the amphitheatre Bottom: Hanging basket arrangements

Most vegetables are grown in our greenhouse by the Garden’s horticulture staff and volunteers, the trees, shrubs, grasses, annuals, perennials, roses, vines, fruits, and groundcovers are purchased from local growers. The spring plant sale couldn’t happen without the crucial support of the Red Butte Garden volunteers. They work side-by-side with the horticulture team caring for plants, adding identification labels, and setting up all the plants in the amphitheatre a few days prior to the sale date. Volunteers also play key roles at the plant sale from checking people in, assisting guests with plant selection advice, and ringing up the tally.

Red Butte Garden

The Red Butte Garden annual spring plant sale and fundraiser is a two-day event that usually falls on the Friday and Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend. For many years, Friday has been held as a benefit day for Garden members only. Saturday offers free entry for the public to shop and roam through the meticulously organized and labeled rows of plants set up throughout the Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre. Unfortunately, like so many other events, the 2020 spring plant sale was cancelled, but our greenhouse staff continued to care for the vegetables and other plants that had already been planted for the sale. Gratefully, we were able to donate 4,000 of them to local nonprofit organizations that serve the community. We don’t know what the annual spring plant sale will look like this May. It may not be as large as past sales, but our heirloom vegetables and hanging basket plantings are currently growing in our greenhouses, so stay tuned and check our website for the latest news.

Vegetables The in-house growing process starts nine months in advance of the May sale— during the previous fall when seeds are ordered. Greenhouse volunteers along with Garden staff begin sowing seeds as early as February. They plant and care for heirloom tomatoes and peppers, special collections of melons and squash, and a variety of greens, cucumber, and herbs from seed to sale. Perennials In tandem with the vegetable growing timeline, the horticulture team pours through catalogs to develop lists of the trees, shrubs, and perennials to be purchased or consigned from outside growers. They order trees, shrubs, and plants that grow well our environment, perennials that are popular here, and unique and hard-to-find native and waterwise plants. Annuals Greenhouse teams also propagate annual flowering plants to use as cuttings for the stunning hanging baskets created by the Garden’s floral designers. In addition to plant sale plants, most of the annuals found in the Visitor Center, Richard K. Hemingway Orangerie, and throughout the Garden were grown in our greenhouses.

Marketing Communications Specialist Kate Randall joined the Garden in 2012. She is a graduate of Utah State University (BA, Liberal Arts) and the University of Utah Nonprofit Academy for Excellence.

A THANK YOU TO THE COMMUNITY To celebrate the Garden’s anniversary, we counted down the final days of 2020 with our campaign, 35 Days of Giving to Celebrate 35 Years of Growing. Each day we shared stories, photos, or videos that covered different areas of the Garden and highlighted the plants, programs, and people that make Red Butte Garden special. As the Garden’s most ambitious campaign to date, we used our website, mailers, and social media to reach members and introduce the Garden to a new group of enthusiasts. The outpouring of love and support from our community has been incredibly humbling as we have received hundreds of donations and notes filled with kind words and support.

Featured locations in the Garden Top: The Water Conservation Garden Bottom: The Floral Walk

As well as recognizing some of our long-term supporters, we reflected on the many aspects that made the last 35 years so extraordinary. Within our short existence, numerous programs have sprouted to support our mission of connecting people with plants and the beauty of living landscapes. Beginning with Dr. Walter P. Cottam’s research on oaks (including Quercus turbinella and macrocarpa that are native to Utah), we conveyed how his work set the stage for our rich history with conservation and restoration. Today, our conservation department acts as stewards of the land and works to protect numerous at-risk species and habitats throughout the state. The Garden is also a living museum with impressive plant collections, and we shared those stories as well. Our carefully curated collections range from sky-high conifers to brightly colored penstemons. Beyond their beauty, these collections help preserve biodiversity so they can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Red Butte Garden

Through times of uncertainty, we as an organization are reminded of the kindness and generosity in the world through supporters like you. As we leave 2020 behind, a new chapter lies ahead for us all. Spring is just around the corner and the Garden is slowly awakening from its long winter slumber. We invite you to pause and take a moment to observe the natural world around you. As the sun starts shining brighter and plants are beginning to bloom, we are reminded that better days are ahead. Because of your continuous support, the Garden will weather this storm and continue to grow. Development Specialist Luz Corrales joined Red Butte Garden in 2019. She assists the Garden’s Major Gifts Officer and oversees the annual appeal program.
