A New Year, A New Beginning Happy New Year! I am honored to kick off 2022 as the fifth executive director of Red Butte Garden. I am grateful for the kind messages and support I’ve received from so many of you. Together, we are going to have another amazing year. How can I be this sure so early in the new year? Because of our loyal members and the generosity of our donors and volunteers. At the beginning of each new year, we like to acknowledge our donors by listing those organizations and individuals in the newsletter. We were overwhelmed to see that we had a significant increase in the number of donations last year. Because the data from 2020 is skewed by the impact of the pandemic, we compared donations received in 2019 to those in 2021. This revealed a 12% increase, which is remarkable given all the ups and downs of the last year. We saw a similar growth in memberships, and we expect this trend to continue as we open up more programming and in-person events. While that’s great news, I think it’s even more impressive to note that the number of small donations increased by 23%. While I can’t be sure, my sense is that people felt the impact when access to the Garden was curtailed and responded with this increase in support. We sought to fill the gap in in-person programming with online communications and social media campaigns, which lead to an increase in engagement from our social media followers. As for our volunteers, not all of them were ready to return to the Garden due to COVID. We had about 100 fewer members on the team this last year. But when looking at the number of hours that they contributed, this smaller crew worked an amazing 23% more hours than those logged for 2019. With this kind of support and the reassurance of knowing how much the Garden means to all of you who continue to show up, lend a hand, and give your time and resources—how could we be anything but optimistic about our future?

ANOTHER AMAZING YEAR, BECAUSE OF YOU Reflecting on the year that was 2021, we’ve come to one conclusion about our loyal members, generous donors, and dedicated volunteers—you like us. You really, really like us! And you never wavered in your support of Red Butte Garden. After a challenging and uncertain 2020, you came back in force as we resumed usual programming and services in 2021. From concerts to summer camps, Botany Boxes to BOOtanical, you helped us build bridges, literally and figuratively, to reinforce and expand our impact in communities throughout Utah and beyond. Thanks to private donations, we were able to serve over 2,800 children through our community outreach and on-site youth programs designed to build an appreciation and understanding of plants and our larger ecosystem. We modified our award-winning Botany Bin program to create individualized Botany Boxes for 9,614 school children in 98 schools statewide, to enable them to conduct their own experiments and research at home, bridging online instruction with realworld experiences. Your support helped bridge our social distances by allowing us to come together once again last summer to enjoy artists from all over the world at our Outdoor Concert Series. Against many odds, we were able to pull off a full season of performances where nearly 62,000 folks could get footloose with Kenny Loggins and real with Lukas Nelson; be mesmerized by YoYo Ma and hypnotized by Khruangbin; and stay human with Michael Franti while wearing cheap sunglasses with ZZ Top. Also with your support, we built another bridge to the arts by showcasing the talents of Ballet West dancers and Sundance Institute filmmakers on our amphitheatre stage. redbuttegarden.org

Our gardens were fortified through the tireless efforts of our dedicated staff and volunteers who were buoyed by a resounding show of support of our year-end campaign to fund general operating needs. No garden grows unattended, and staffing is Red Butte’s greatest operating expense. Our conservation efforts bridged time with our continued research into the Four Corners Potato and collaborations with Indigenous populations to protect and better document the plant. We bridged the gap to homebound, elderly, and underserved constituents through the expansion of online classes and adult workshops. And for almost an entire month, we reimagined the Garden into a fairytale haunt to transport guests of all ages to a magical kingdom of BOOtanical proportions—delighting the senses and sensibilities of nearly 11,000 garden ghouls. Last but not least, we opened our newest public attraction, the Six Bridges Trail where we literally built six bridges over Red Butte’s namesake creek. This new feature connects guests of all ages and abilities with a previously inaccessible portion of the Garden. A vision of our late founder and benefactor Zeke Dumke Jr., the Six Bridges Trail has quickly become a visitor favorite since its quiet unveiling this past fall. We have achieved many great things this past year, all thanks to your unwavering support. And for that, we are immeasurably grateful and humbled. We feel loved—really, really loved. We hope the feeling is mutual. Top: The Sea Witch Grotto and The Queen of Hearts Garden during BOOtanical Bottom: A portion of the new Six Bridges Trail

INTEGRATING HERBS INTO YOUR GARDEN When some think of herb gardens, they picture potted herbs sitting neatly on the kitchen windowsill waiting to be used, while others imagine an area of a backyard garden dedicated solely to herbs. One overlooked method of herb gardening extends past utility and integrates herbs with other plantings. Imagine experiencing your garden as you rediscover the herbal gems you’ve hidden throughout. When considering where to place herbs in your garden, first consider sun exposure, accessibility, watering needs, and type—such as perennial or annual, woody or herbaceous. Additionally, think about how to integrate your desired plants in a visually appealing way. What kind of plant do you need to fill an empty space? While keeping in mind shape, color, texture, scale, and form, you can figure out how this new addition will interact with existing plants. How will it direct the viewer’s eye? Does it have a similar texture or color, thus blending in? Or does it complement and standout, becoming a focal point? Consider the top photo from the Herb Garden. There is a mix of ornamental plants (roses, king’s spear, blue spruce) and herbs (lavender, nasturtium, calendula). The design uses a mix of annual herbs and a perennial woody herb (lavender) amongst other ornamental perennials, trees, and shrubs. A combination of perennials and shrubs gives a constant structure to the design with the ability to change out a portion each season to try different annuals. This is a good example of using varying forms, textures, scales, and colors to create a balanced design. The conifers in the foreground tie in with the deciduous trees in the background by linking type and structure, moving

your eye through the design and then back down to the roses in the mid-ground. The change in elevation draws you through the herbs and back to the foreground. Herbs come in many different types—annuals, herbaceous perennials, woody perennials, and even groundcovers. Many produce pollinator-loving, nectar-rich flowers such as borage (Borago officinalis) for bumblebees. Need a drought-tolerant groundcover for your garden path? Grab some thyme (Thymus). A Wings of Night lavender (Lavendula stoechas ‘Wings of Night’) or pineapple sage (Salvia elegans) will provide a growing season of beauty and amazing fragrance. Looking for an idea for an empty space? Curate an herbal tea garden with a rose, holy basil, lemon balm, chamomile, and a spruce, and change it up as you like. We’re getting some exciting herbs together for our spring fundraiser plant sale (including plants mentioned here), and we’d be delighted to point you in the right direction as you integrate herbs into your own garden. Horticulturist Danielle Frohn currently manages the First Impressions Gardens that include the displays at the Garden’s entrance. She joined Red Butte Garden in 2017 and has a BS in Architecture from the University of Utah. Pineapple sage (Salvia elegans)

Red Butte Garden Volunteers at our Volunteer Appreciation Reception, December 2021.

A NOTE OF THANKS TO OUR EXCEPTIONAL VOLUNTEERS “Thank you” does not begin to describe how grateful we are for all the hours served by our volunteers. We are continually inspired by their generosity, commitment, and effort, which has made this year such a success. We were excited to welcome our volunteers back into the Garden after being shut out for more than a year. In 2021, 286 dedicated volunteers put in 35,964 hours serving as docents and tram drivers, working on crews hosting concerts and events, and assisting staff in our horticulture, membership, curation, and school programs departments. We appreciate their perseverance through the evolving pandemic protocols, floods, extreme heat, and poor air quality that plagued us for much of the season. Our docents, tram drivers, and special events volunteers helped greet and educate individuals who visited the Garden from all over the world. Their patience, friendliness, and knowledge went a long way in educating guests and fostering their love for gardening. We appreciated the support of the concert crew who worked 25 performances in 63 days. One volunteer said she felt like she was part of a family. We saw that through the teamwork and comradery that was shown night after night. Our horticulture crew were especially patient as we addressed staffing shortages and restructured the assignment areas for different sections of the Garden. The volunteers worked tirelessly to help keep the Garden in shape for our guests to enjoy. Our curation and membership volunteers quietly served in the background, but their assistance didn’t go unnoticed. We couldn’t run Red Butte Garden without them helping answer questions and compiling materials for events and mailings. The school programs volunteers shared their knowledge with over 3,000 students this fall. One student commented it was the best day of his life. The volunteers were able to create meaningful connections with students and help inspire the next generation of leaders and scientists—and hopefully a few botanists. Volunteers at Red Butte Garden are the heart and soul of everything we do. There is simply no way that we could pay them back for their gifts of time, attention, care, and love that they extend to the Garden, guests, and staff. Our volunteers are extremely good-natured, funny, smart, nice people. They show up each day ready to learn and share something new, meet other interesting people, and make a difference in our community with their service. We love our volunteers, and we can’t thank them enough for all they do. Volunteer coordinator Julie Duckett joined the Garden in June 2021. She has more than 16 years of experience working with nonprofits and governmental agencies. A Utah native, she enjoys hiking and exploring, and road trips to nearby national parks. redbuttegarden.org
