Dee’s Message
6TH MAY 2022
Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to another exciting term in the ELS! The staff and I were thrilled to have all the children back in their classes this week and it was very special to see them reestablishing their friendships and excitedly connecting with their teachers. There were so many experiences to share that it will probably take a few weeks for all of the funfilled events which the children enjoyed during their holidays to come tumbling out! Of course, there were also those for whom the fun at school never ended, who were part of the Holiday Care Programme. It was clear they all had a thoroughly good time, with a varied and creative range of activities on offer each day. My thanks to all those wonderful teachers who participated and in particular, Jane Pledger who made such an effort to ensure that the children had such a
stimulating and interesting experience. One cannot underestimate how important a physical space is when it comes to helping a child feel secure and affirmed. We are so conscious of this in the ELS, and we try to ensure that our classrooms and play areas are exactly that – spaces which invite exploration and creativity, while at the same time providing a sense of support. Learning inevitably means stepping over the threshold of uncertainty at times – it is how we all learn that we are capable of so much more than we could ever have imagined. This is what we hope for in the ELS. That the physical spaces and the encouragement shown by the teachers will prompt the children to step beyond the known, to explore the unknown. To discover that they

have wonderful abilities in art, music, physical activities and in the vast potential to learn. And not only that, but that their own unique personalities can combine with others to create friendships that may last a lifetime. We look forward to a term full of such experiences. From sensory play to imaginations ignited by artworks, dress-up and music, to exploring the wide outdoors, and gaining new skills in sports lessons – there is so much to anticipate. The best thing is that with children as young as those in the ELS, we adults get to marvel at their dramatic development in a very short space of time. Artworks become more refined, new words seem to pop into their mouths every day, and their ability to perform ever more complex physical tasks never ceases to amaze. We hope that it will be a term full of such moments to celebrate. The staff and I look forward to continuing the journey alongside you, as we enjoy the company of the very special little people in the ELS. The children were hard at work this past week, preparing special gifts for the equally special people in their lives. As our families celebrate Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, we trust that a memorable time will be had by all – and that the mums and others who have such an impact on the children will feel truly affirmed and loved. Have a great term! Dee Pitcairn Principal
