REDDAM EARLY LEARNING SCHOOL WOOLLAHRA NEWSLETTER 29 July 2022
Dee’s Message Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to what should be another fun-filled, exciting term in the ELS! The teachers and I have no doubt that the children are going to have a wonderful time in the coming months as they play, learn and enjoy each other’s company. We also look forward to hearing their exuberant voices around the school as they live life to the full. My thanks to all those special teachers who contributed so much to the Holiday Care programme and who made each day really special for the children who attended. One of the cornerstones of our school is that we value relationships. It really is very special to see the interactions between the children, their teachers and the various family members who pop in during the term. The importance of relationships in the lives of young children cannot be stressed enough.
The Early Years Learning Framework underlines this by reminding us that “Children’s connectedness and different ways of belonging with people, country and communities helps them to learn ways of being which reflect the values, traditions and practices of their families and communities. Over time this learning transforms the ways they interact with others.” We can probably all relate to this. As we feel a sense of belonging – to a family, community, circle of friends, and so on – we undergo a deep change in who we are and how we feel about ourselves (our sense of ‘being’). This really is critical for young children, and our teachers are only too aware of how important it is to create a space where they can feel that they ‘belong’.

Many families can probably also testify to how difficult maintaining relationships was during the pandemic, where visits to grandparents and other family members was severely curtailed. It reinforced just how important intergenerational relationships are for children. While their primary caregivers are obviously those with a more hands-on role in raising them, along with their teachers, some of the most significant relationships for young children are those with grandparents and other older people. We can probably all reflect on our own experiences with grandparents and of happy moments spent with them. Their wisdom, empathy and very real caring somehow transcends most other relationships. Research has even shown that a close relationship with an older relative can have knock-on effects, such as improved self-esteem, enhancing language development and reading skills, and an increase in empathy for others. We look forward to another term of involvement from the broader Reddam ELS family, as we celebrate the little people who fill our classrooms. It certainly makes all the difference in their lives. Have a great term! Dee Pitcairn
