Reddam House High School Newsletter 23 June 2023 Volume 23, Issue 18 | 23 June 2023

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Both campuses have been wonderfully quiet as students prepared and wrote their Half Yearly Examinations.

Students in the Middle School breathed a collective sigh of relief as their Examinations concluded yesterday. Regular timetabled lessons continue for the rest of the term for them. Teachers will be busy marking and preparing reports, which will come out in the first week of the holiday. Year 10 and Year 11 students complete their examinations next Friday and Year 12 the Friday after that. Reports for the Senior School students will be ready in the second week of next term.

Despite the focus on these examinations, many activities have continued:

Last Saturday, two teams from Reddam participated in the Model United Nations competition at Parliament House.

The team comprising Jasmine Cohen, Robbie Kaplan, and Sally Hanley represented Italy, and Asher Lingam, Hugo Bendeich, and Jade Hastings represented Mozambique. The delegates had to research their country and the three resolutions beforehand to form a stance on each. Resolutions proposed included the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, the effects of universal sanctions, and the right to free speech.

It was an incredible experience, with 22 schools participating and lively debates on the floor of the NSW Parliament.

All Reddam students were outstanding representatives of their countries (and of Reddam). They all spoke extremely convincingly and would make excellent diplomats.

Our students were expertly coached by Mia Seisun, who graduated from Reddam last year and was involved with Model United Nations during her senior years.

We are delighted to share our most recent Dance Eisteddfod news. Last Sunday, our Middle School Dance Company members competed in the Extreme Dance Competition and achieved outstanding results.

The Middle School Dance Company competed in the Year 7-9 Jazz and Year 7-9 Lyrical Troupe sections. This group had some challenges, including the absence of two performers, requiring reblocking both routines at the 11th hour. It was amazing to witness the students pulling together backstage and dancing as a team onstage with incredible commitment, professionalism, and focus. We were so excited to see this attitude rewarded with a Highly Commended for the Jazz and 3rd Place for the Lyrical section in a very high level of competition - a fantastic result. They performed with flawless technique, poise, and stage presence, representing Reddam pridefully and executing Emily Knight's beautiful choreography with precision. We are so proud of each performer. Students who danced on the day included:

Maritsa Apostolopoulos, Siena Gilbert, Sophia Glass, Tali Gor, Reuben Harvey-Dean, Elise Siboulet, Olive Begg, Bonnie Douglas, Ella Kirby, Alex Thatcher, and Tasha Rogoff

In Drama, we congratulate the Year 11 Drama students who staged their Drama Assessment Performances this week. The students presented excerpts from 'Ruby Moon' by Matt Cameron that they had directed themselves as part of their study of Contemporary Australian Theatre. Some outstanding work was produced. Well done to all involved.

Year 9 Drama students presented their Shakespeare Term Assessment performances, directing scenes from 'Romeo and Juliet.' Our students were tasked with presenting their performances with limited stage space and applying techniques such as actors as props and transformational acting to recreate Shakespeare's tragic love story. We are proud of the hard work and commitment our Drama students displayed toward this task and thrilled with the calibre of talent they presented on the day. Well done to each of our Year 9 Elective Drama students.

On the sports front, we congratulate Oliver Sacks on his selection in the NSW All Schools Under 16 soccer team. This week, Oliver played in a tournament against the NSW Combined High Schools and NSW Combined Catholic Schools. Representing NSWCIS, Oliver was a standout in his team. He was one of two boys from the Independent Schools in NSW selected into the All Schools Team. A massive achievement, and he still managed to squeeze his Reddam Year 11 examinations in as well. Brilliant

While on the news from the world of soccer. Ex-student Charlie Rule, who graduated from Reddam in 2019, has just signed a three-year deal with Brighton and Hove Albion to play in the Premier League in the UK. Charlie played for the Junior Matildas while at school and then made the squad of the Matildas for the matches against the USA. Charlie and her teammates from Sydney FC won the National Women's League this year. Living the dream, Charlie; well done

To all our students, have a calm week, and do the very best that you can. Keep a balance and keep perspective.

Sydney Eisteddfod

Last week the Reddam Concert Band achieved a Highly Commended award in their section. Here are some photos from the day.

The Senior Choir received a Highly Commended award in a very difficult section, where all high school choir categories had been merged into one large section. The group performed Raintree and Adiemus and received an excellent score and feedback from adjudicator Jonathan Welch, who commented on the choir's unison sound, balance, vibrant tone and excellent consonants.

Our String Orchestra students also competed on Wednesday, scoring a very respectable mark of 88 and playing with great beauty. Congratulations to all the students who have taken part in the Eisteddfod so far this year, including several Year 12 students who are competing in solo sections this week and weekend.

Bachelor of Business (International Tourism) Subject Highlight: Sustainable and Competitive Destinations

The world has become a global community, opening up destinations that were previously unimaginable. These destinations can no longer take a passive approach to tourism marketing; they are products which need to be positioned and promoted sustainably.

This subject aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts on a tourist destination. Students will explore various topics such as tourist motivation, branding a destination, managing tourists, special interest tourism and crisis management. They then will work collaboratively to develop a competitive and sustainable tourism plan for a destination.

UAC

UAC Guide 2023/24

Applications

A reminder that if students from NSW or ACT didn't receive their UAC PIN via email on 5 April, please have them contact our customer service line on 02 9752 0200 for assistance.

Students who are completing IB or Year 12 in WA can now apply via UAC, as we have their details in our system for them to lodge their application.

I have had many questions about not finding courses on the UAC website. Please advise your students that if they can't find the course/s they are looking for, it just means that the uni hasn't

provided UAC with all details as yet. All courses will be listed progressively and no later than 1 August.

Schools Recommendation Scheme

At the end of April, UAC received 2000 SRS applications which is up by 18% at the same time last year.

And a reminder that schools won't be able to rate students until early to mid-August. We will be in touch soon to confirm the timing of this. We want to thank you for your patience while we are working on changes to improve SRS.

Early entry offer schemes

As you are all aware, there are many different early-entry applications, including SRS, so here are a few tips for students.

• If students want to keep all opportunities open to them, then they should apply for both early entry as well as through UAC for ATAR-based offers.

• Don't duplicate preferences across applications.

• Keep track of all applications lodged.

• Early entry isn't a guarantee of entry, as students must meet the minimum entry requirements.

For more information about each early entry offer scheme, check the UAC website here.

Educational Access Scheme

The UAC website has a great deal of information on the disadvantages students can apply for under EAS. We would recommend students check each category of disadvantage for details on documents they may need to provide to get themselves prepared for what's ahead.

To date, we have received just under 3000 EAS applications, with many who have already uploaded the required documents for a full assessment of their application.

The Access booklets are available online for you to download and provide to students if need be.

They will then need to complete the supplementary form provided below, ensuring they have uploaded their Year 11 grade results. Please find key application dates for UC’s Early Offer Round:

Applications close: Sunday 27 August

Please note that course preferences must be finalised in UAC by 31 August to ensure time for assessment. Offers will be issued to domestic students on Thursday 7 September.

UNE Courses for 2024 now open in UAC

We’ve recently opened applications for 2024 study through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). New students can apply for over 50 on campus UNE bachelor degrees through UAC. Current year 12 students can also now add preference to their UAC application to be considered for the UAC Schools Recommendation Scheme

Application via UAC

Other ways students can apply

School leavers possess a distinct advantage as they have several avenues through which they can apply to UNE. This not only increases their chances of being considered for a wide array of courses but also empowers them with multiple options, enabling them to select the most suitable course that aligns with their interests and aspirations.

In addition to UAC and SRS applications being open, current year 12 students can also apply for UNE Early Entry now or direct to UNE when application open.

UNE Early Entry – guarantees your students a place at university whether or not they're expecting to receive an ATAR score. Our 2024 Early Entry applications have been open since February and close on 15 September 2023.

By applying directly to UNE, students can get their offer before the release of Year 12 results, giving them certainty that no matter what happens, they will have a place at UNE.

If your students have applied for SRS via UAC they can also apply for another or different courses via UNE Early Entry.

Application via Early Entry

Direct application to UNE – current year 12 students wishing to study online in our bachelor degrees or in any of our diplomas, advanced diplomas or undergraduate certificates can also apply direct to UNE.

There is no cost to apply online direct UNE. Students will need to apply in this way for courses where: they are relying on their academic merit (e.g their ATAR or other prior completion qualification/s) to gain entry into; or for UNE courses not available through Early Entry or SRS etc. Direct applications to study in 2024 are expected to open in August 2023

Introducing UNSW Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offers

We are excited to announce that for Term 1, 2024 onwards, domestic students who are successful in applying for the UNSW Portfolio Entry Scheme will be eligible for an Early Conditional Offer.

Portfolio Entry provides students applying for most Arts, Design & Architecture and Engineering degrees with the opportunity to showcase their passion and talent through a portfolio of work, alongside their ATAR.

What is a Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer?

Successful applicants will receive an early conditional offer which has an adjusted ATAR requirement up to 10 ATAR points below the lowest selection rank for a specific degree or range of related degrees.

If a student meets or exceeds the adjusted ATAR requirement for an eligible degree and lists this as their highest eligible preference in UAC for the specified UAC offer round, then they will be issued a firm offer to that degree.

For Term 1, 2024 entry, firm offers for Portfolio Entry will be issued in UAC December Round 2 (NSW and ACT applicants) and January Round 1 (Interstate and IB applicants).

When is the Deadline?

Submissions for Term 1, 2024 are already open, with early conditional offers released Friday, 1 September 2023

A late round of Portfolio Entry applications will open Saturday, 2 September 2023 and close on Wednesday, 22 November 2023. Late round early conditional offers will be released on Friday, 8 December 2023.Find out more
