Year 10 Art Sport Plus much more...
Dear Parents and Caregivers, The twenty four Music students who attended WOMAdelaide music festival last weekend had a thoroughly enjoyable time which included Salsa Dancing lessons in the park, visiting MegaAdventure and two full afternoons and evenings experiencing the Festival itself. My thanks to Mrs Wood, Ms. Eckardt, and Mr O’Mahony for creating this opportunity for our music students.
Also on Monday, our swimming team traveled out to Warringah for the annual CDSSA Swimming Championships. They had a great day with all of our swimmers doing exceptionally well. Congratulations to three of our swimmers who were crowned Age Champions.
This was followed on Monday by the first music evening held at school in almost two years. The Welcome Recital, where thirty of our best musicians shared their talent with a very appreciative audience, saw a cross section of students from Kindergarten to Year 12 performing. The exceptional quality and diversity of the performances made for an all encompassing, entertaining evening.

Our Debating teams hosted Sydney Grammar at school last Friday in the 3rd round of the Eastside Competition. Topics argued centered around who should or shouldn’t be sent to prison and we congratulate our Year 8 and Year 12 teams on successfully arguing their topics. This week has been one of excursions and learning outside of the classroom. Year 11 and Year 12 Artists attended Art Express on Wednesday where they loved the opportunity to see the standard of top achievers in the state as they work towards their final hand-ins of their Body of Work. Year 11 enjoyed gaining a greater understanding of what they will be working on next year in Year 12. Year 9 Geography students visited Calmsley Hill City Farm, which provided students with the opportunity to explore the operation of a working farm. On the day, they followed a trail discovering the different land uses of the farm and the greater Sydney region. Students used a range of fieldwork skills to complete a comprehensive study of ecosystems and biomes. As part of their unit on the Movements of People, Year 9 History students attended a screening of the 2014 Academy Award-winning film ‘12 Years a Slave’, directed by Steve McQueen. Next week over 100 Middle and Senior School students will be working hard onstage, backstage, or in the orchestra pit to present the Broadway classic Anything Goes at NIDA, Parade Theatre. Year 11 Ancient History students visited the Chau Chak Wing Museum at Sydney University. Sydney's newest Museum boasts the largest collection of antiquities in Australia, from ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt, to the art of First Nations people. A perfect place for Ancient Historians to be extended and engrossed in their subject.
Tickets are on sale and can be purchased from the following link: https://premier.ticketek.com.au/shows/show.aspx? sh=NIDAANY22
All Year 7 to Year 10 students will attend the matinee performance on Thursday, which I know is a highlight Seminar Day on Thursday for all Middle School students for the cast to perform for their peers. is always a great opportunity to expand on the learning experience of the classroom. Year 7 Students visited Watson’s Bay where they observed and assessed the features and characteristics of the Sydney Harbour coastal landscape and examined its landforms. While discussing the management and protection of environments for their sustainability, students examined various land degradation issues and environmental hazards. Mr Wallace was exceptionally happy with the outcome of the day. Year 8 students took part in a cultural awareness and integration program held at the Sydney Jewish Museum Education Centre. This excursion will facilitate a broader understanding of multiculturalism within Australia. The teachers who accompanied the student groups through the Jewish Museum reported that our students behaved in an exemplary way.

SEMINAR DAY—YEAR 8 Visit to The Jewish Museum Few words can accurately portray the atrocities endured by Jews during the Holocaust. Still, hopefully, our trip to the Jewish Museum has given us an insight into what the Semites suffered. On Seminar Day, the year 8’s traveled to the Jewish Museum in Darlinghurst to learn about the Holocaust and the miraculous stories of survivors. We discussed the dehumanisation of Jews and other displaced peoples and what they might have felt, endured the Ghettos, transportation and the concentration camps. After a tour of the museum and learning about certain events Jews experienced, we were privileged to hear from two Holocaust survivors. Their stories were ones of heartbreak and hope, and we were extremely lucky to hear them. From this experience, we have gained an understanding of this abhorrent event, and thus the will to ensure history is not repeated. Maya Hatzvi, Year 8

MUSIC - WELCOME RECITAL On Monday evening, we enjoyed our first evening recital performance in quite some time. Adelaide Hall was filled with supportive families and friends, and our Year 7 to 12 students delivered a wonderful evening of varied performances. We were able to feature many different instruments and repertoire choices, and we look forward to sharing the film of the evening with you when it is ready. Congratulations to all of our talented performers, and to our Judiciary members Marlena Pasvolsky (Year 9) and Maya Bienstock (Year 12) for acting as hosts for the evening. We look forward to sharing in many more public performances as the year continues! Marcus Bortolotti, Head of Music (Performance)
