Dear Parents and Caregivers, What a term this has been where we can very proudly say that we managed to keep open and operating throughout. That is, despite in one or two weeks having ten teachers and +/- 180 students away as either close contacts or themselves being COVID positive. Mr Cawse and Mr Garratt have kept both the Bondi and Woollahra Campus fully staffed and lessons continuing. Thank you to both of them. My appreciation and gratitude goes to all the teachers who have had to cover for sick colleagues. Parents need to be aware that Hybrid teaching is exponentially more difficult for teachers than either all at school face-to-face or all at home and online. Next term this model will only be available for COVID related absences. The Year 11 Leadership Camp took place from Sunday through to Tuesday under the guidance and supervision of Mr Dalglish and Mrs Kaminski, their Year Coordinators. Their team of teachers who helped supervise the now famous “Amazing Race” through Centennial Park loved being part of Mr Francis’ creative competition designed to test teamwork, while having the best time ever. The students then proceeded to Stanwell Tops for two days of workshops, seminars and activities aimed at helping students make the most of their final two years of school. I can honestly say that all staff involved in this camp enjoyed their time connecting with this wonderful group of students. We look forward to walking alongside them on their leadership journey which starts in Term Three.

Hamilton Island is one of the most magnificent destinations in Australia and this week, a group of Reddam House students have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to participate in a range of art workshops on the island and at the Art Gallery. The students were involved in a range of workshops such as drawing, watercolour, sculptural and photographic. This was an unparalleled experience to be able to create artworks in such a tropical and lush landscape. This was an amazing experience for our incredibly talented and creative artists. If your child is interested in this opportunity in 2023 contact: laurellen.symonds@reddamhouse.com.au

On Thursday evening, a selection of Music Extension students who are studying Voice were given the opportunity to perform in a workshop with International Opera Singer and highly respected pedagogue, Simon Lobelson.

In Science this week, Year 7 started investigating a new topic "Separating substances”. They learnt about different mixtures and solutions. The teachers thought it would be a great idea for students to make their own colloid, so ice cream was made using dry ice. This delicious treat was a wonderful way to end the term’s Science.

Simon graduated from the Royal College of Music and has toured extensively as a soloist around the world, performing with companies such as The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera, and Opera Australia. Year 12 students Jack Futcher, Zachary Ahrens and Gabriel Jones all presented some of their HSC music performance repertoire in an 'open lesson' where an audience of elective voice students from 9-12 and their parents observed, learning about voice technique, performance presentation and musical interpretation of a range of repertoire in English, French, German and Russian. The students were well prepared to take full advantage of the experience and are well on their way to being fully prepared for their HSC exams in September. The Music Department looks forward to offering more of these experiences through the year with future events to In Year 8 this week, they dissected hearts and kidneys. include opportunities for Reddam's Instrumentalists, and The students were amazed to discover how these organs a session targeted to Contemporary/Jazz Vocalists. can complete such complicated functions. This term in Visual Arts, Year 7 have learnt the foundations of drawing, particularly how to work with tone and texture. They have applied their technical skills to create some incredible drawings of items we normally dismiss as ‘trash’ and in doing so have turned them into treasure! On page 7 is a small selection of some of their outstanding works. Year 8 Visual Arts students this term have learned all about the fast, fun and vibrant world of Pop Art & created papier-mâché sculptures of some of their favourite pop culture items. A small selection of their works currently on display can be viewed on page 7. I would like to congratulate past student, Miro McIntyre Clere of the HSC Class of 2021, who has just received a scholarship to play football and study at Dean College in the USA. (see article page 5) During the holidays, a number of activities will take place which are exciting: Ten students along with Mrs Pelosi are headed up to the Northern Territory on a community service adventure and we look forward to reporting back on that next term. 31 students are involved in Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous journeys with Outward Bound, either trekking the Great North Walk or The Coast Track in The Royal National Park. 25 students doing their bronze hike, 4 silver and two brave students doing their Gold Award Hike. My thanks to Mr Wallace and Mrs Symonds for arranging these opportunities for our students. @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter

On Saturday evening the HSC Class of 2011 gathered for their ten-year reunion. It is always such fun having special memories shared by these students with me. Time has given some perspective to many of these students and heightened their appreciation for all that they enjoyed while at school. It was wonderful to see them all again and to hear how their lives are unfolding since school. My thanks to Hannah Trollip and Nicky Gluch, photographed left, who arranged the evening. Term dates for 2023 have been sent home and I include a link to the school website where these can be found. 2023 Term Dates Term 1 reports for all Year 7 - Year 11 students will be posted to the Parent Lounge by Tuesday next week. An email will be sent to parents informing them when this has been done. To our Jewish families, a happy Pesach, our Christian families, a happy Easter, and we wish our Muslim families all the blessings of the holy month of Ramadan. To all Reddam families, a fantastic well deserved holiday. Dave Pitcairn

ALUMNI NEWS Miro McIntyre Clere, Graduate Class of 2021

2021 graduate, Miro, has recently signed with a USA college, Dean College, to further her sport and studies overseas. Attached is a copy of the letter received along with her signing picture. Congratulations to Miro for following her dream and we are delighted to share this news with the Reddam community.

THEATRE CLUB We had the pleasure of taking our 9-12 Elective Drama Theatre Club students to see ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ at the Roslyn Packer Theatre as part of the STC season. We were all blown away by not only Artistic Director, Kip William’s, vision but Eryn Jean Norvill who led a one woman show executing each role with precision and complete characterisation. Our students gave a standing ovation for the incredible performance of Norvill and the technical genius of the camera crew who masterfully choreographed this extraordinary production!

CONGRATULATIONS Sophie Marcolina, Year 10 Remembering Berklee’s great performing arts school from Reddam’s connection through Inspired, Sophie looked up summer programs and came across the Vocal Intensive Course. To get into the Vocal Intensive course, she had to go through an application process involving providing singing experiences, songs performed over the past two years and choral experiences, plus provide two videos of Sophie singing two different songs. The songs chosen were “Cockeyed Optimist” and “Du Bist Wie Eine Blume”. Congratulations to Sophie on her acceptance. From their website, "Boston Conservatory at Berklee Vocal/Choral Intensive is a two-week summer program for high school-aged singers who are focused on musical theater or classical music. Led by Professor Bill Cutter and Chair of Voice Patty Thom, and taught by Conservatory faculty who have years of experience training young singing artists, this is a chance for young performers to explore their abilities as solo performers and to begin to discover the many professional and educational options available to them as they move forward in their artistic lives." LGBTQIA+ COMPETITION Pride means so many different things to different people. The Pride (LGBTQIA+) Society are very excited to host an Art Competition, focused on the theme of "What does Pride Mean to You?". This is open to all students, from Years 7 -12. Art can be of any medium at all (photos, paintings, sculptures, animation, etc), and can be about pride in any form, accompanied with a short blurb about what the artwork means and how it matches the prompt. The competition entries close in Term 2, Week 5, but hopefully this gives everyone enough time to get started on their entries over the holidays! Below poster designed by Year 9 student, Ruby Sher

YEAR 8 - SCIENCE Last Friday our year 8 students were treated to a visit by Professor Tracie Barber from UNSW who came in to speak about her work in the field of Biomedical engineering. This experience extended their understanding of the movement of blood through arteries, veins & capillaries and highlighted the impact of the use of 3D printing in the biomedical field. Thank you to Tracie Barber ( mum of Ivy Hincksman in Year 9) for sharing your knowledge with our budding scientists in the Middle School.

YEAR 11 RETREAT This week, Year 11 students took part in a Leadership Camp at the Tops Conference Centre at Stanwell Park, south of Sydney. The Camp began last Sunday with the Amazing Race, which saw teams of students completing puzzles and physical challenges throughout the day in an effort to hold aloft the trophy and take home the grand prize. Well done to this year's winning team, the imaginatively monikered 'Group 3'. This was followed by two days of workshops, where student organised themselves into portfolios with the intention of actualising the school’s motto, “We Shall Give Back.” Additionally, activities were organised such as yoga and meditation, in order to provide students with strategies to cope with the pressure that comes from successfully completing the HSC. The Year 11 students were amazing. As I said to them, it was a real pleasure to share their company for three days. Ms. Kaminski and I were very proud of the way they conducted themselves and we predict great things for this year group. Mr Dalglish

University of New England—Applications are now open UNE’s Early Entry has been running successfully for more than 30 years. Early Entry is open to all Year 12 applicants and relies solely on a school assessment of student attributes and abilities to determine their suitability for entry. The assessment is based around the student’s ability to work and learn independently, as well as their overall potential for academic success at UNE. Students can apply to UNE early, receive an offer and secure a place at university, even before ATARs are released. This gives students certainty to begin making other arrangements such as where to live and finding parttime work.
