Dear Parents and Caregivers, While winter has definitely made its presence felt this week, it has been so amazing to have the community back on the school site for two really special events. The first, the HSC Art Showcase at the Bondi Campus on Monday night. I would imagine at least 500 parents, past students, friends and family members of the forty four Year 12 students who transformed the Bondi Campus into an Art Gallery enjoyed the creativity of our students on display. The examiners who marked the students works prior to the exhibition were blown away and the marks with which they rewarded each student reflect that. We have never before had a cohort who have performed to such a high level across the board. Images start page 4. As I said on the evening the diversity of styles, concepts, phenomenally high standard that the students achieve is the culmination of at least seven years where they have been nurtured in an environment where enjoying the process of art making is the most important factor of creativity. With that philosophy, the end result looks after itself. My thanks to all the Art teachers at the school for cultivating this environment and especially to our two Year 12 teachers Amy Bambach and Laurellen Symonds. Secondly, the Finals of the Instrumental Competition held on Wednesday evening. The 45 students performed to an audience who filled Adelaide Hall. This was a wonderful celebration of the talent and variety within our music programme, and we congratulate all of the students for

their wonderful preparation and performances. Our adjudicator for the evening was acclaimed pianist and conductor Paul Fitzsimon, who commented on how important live performance opportunities were for devel-oping young musicians, and also how difficult it was to select winners amongst such talent. Thank you to Maya Bienstock and Jasmine Cohen for acting as hosts, and William Maccormick (backstage crew), as well as all members of the Reddam House String Orchestra for their performance. Congratulations to all 270 students who entered the competition and applaud the eventual win-ners. Thank you to all the Music Tutors and teachers for preparing and motivating the students to reach such a high level of performance. The results are included on page 8.

This week’s edition of The Stag is the first under new editor Izzy Lowe and her team of Year 10 students. My thanks to Mia Seisun and her team of Year 12 reporters who launched this student newspaper and have ensured that it is passed on to capable enthusiastic successors. All the best Izzy and we look forward to your leadership as you bring your personality and ideas to the job at hand. Her first edition can be found at:

The Senior School Choir competed in the Sydney Eistedfodd last Friday where they were placed third. Congratulations to all the choristers and Elli and Marcus Bortolotti on the wonderful repertoire they have developed. The Middle School assembly enjoyed their final practice before going off to the competition and everyone was amazed by the quality and the quantity of this choir. The 115 students involved enjoyed the experience of preparing for and performing in the competition. Additional photo’s on page 10. The Stag - Student Newsletter | Reddam House Sydney In the freezing cold that we were confronted with on Wednesday, 26 Reddam students represented CDSSA at the AICES Cross Country Championships. Seven of our students were selected into The AICES Team to compete at the NSWCIS Championships next Wednesday at Eastern Creek. Congratulations to Rachel Pearlman, Jayden Finucane, Aston Lake , Sophia Garvin, Tomi Reynaldo, Sonny Cyron and Jared Serman. All of our Reddam runners performed extremely well and gave their very best. Our Under 14 Boys won the Teams event and our Boys cumulative overall score placed us 3rd out of eighty schools and our Girls placed 14th. A great team effort by all of the runners who were totally exhausted but also very supportive of their team mates. Images continue on page 14. Year 11 students who take Biology as a subject, conducted a field trip to study ecosystems which involved studying a natural environment where they walk through a forest or use a dipnet to collect samples from water in order to measure abiotic and biotic factors. For example, the air temperature, light intensity and soil pH can be measured to see if there is a correlation with the types of plants growing in an area. The plants in an environment have a strong influence on the types of animals that inhabit that place. To study these relationships students were taken to Longneck Lagoon, part of Scheyville National Park. It is meant to be home to the Green and Golden Bell Frog, but this may no longer be the case. Students will be investigating why the population of this frog has declined as part of their mandatory Depth Study. See more on page 11.

In Science this week the Year 7’s have been studying specialised cells. They started off the week building a specialised plant cell, called a Palisade cell, using jelly and different shaped lollies. They then progressed to selecting their own specialised cell and are constructing 3D models, as well as discussing how the cells are adapted to carry out their functions. Lots of fun was had while learning rather complex biology. Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead.

YEAR 11 - BIOLOGY EXCURSION On Wednesday, fifty Year 11 Biology students braved a temperature of 12C and 40km/h winds to undertake a field study of the ecosystems at Longneck Lagoon. With a cheerful disposition and lots of layers of clothing, the students investigated the various abiotic and biotic factors in the waterway and nearby woodland forest. The purpose was to collect first-hand data to bring back into the classroom so that students could generate plausible hypotheses for the decline in the population of the Green and Golden Bell Frog, which is native to the east coast of Australia. Not only would they develop hypotheses, students would also be designing a field experiment that they could conduct to test their most likely hypothesis. Despite the early start, the trudging through mud, the wind and the cold, our Reddam students worked without complaint and are to be commended for their enthusiasm for learning!

Paperbark, by Rowan Kremer Year 9 I am not the first to sit here, peeling the thin layers of paperbark from each other, scratching the soft glue dust until the fibre dances in the air and settles pale in my hair. A far cry from the ankle joints of trees that cluster in cold circles of chip bark, the paperbark tree outside my window bends sun-struck from the ground, weeds springing cheerfully through the roots. I unstick the transparent layers that give the paperbark its name and wonder if this is humanity at its core: A space oddity; a tiny drifting rock crawling with curious giants. The world has, in being known, lost its intrigue. There is no movement to stir. No discoveries to spear with a flag, no stone unturned. But the dust in the paperbark is a land of its own, And I, dutifully human, must map it how I can.

We are raising money for breast cancer and some teachers, including Mr Pitcairn and Mr Cawse have agreed to dye their hair pink. Yes you read that correctly. On Friday the 10th of June at least 10 of our teachers have agreed to dye their hair Pink at assembly provided we raise $1000. We know that many of you have relatives or know people that have suffered from breast cancer and all money raised will go directly to this cause. Over the next two weeks there will be boxes at reception where you can put your spare change or any donations. We will also have a mufti day on Tuesday the 7th where you can bring a pink note($5) for breast cancer, but of course we will accept any donation. As seen on the goal thermometer below, the more money we raise the more teachers will be walking around the school with pink hair. We are so excited that we already have two teachers dying their hair pink (thanks Mr Charles and Ms Kaminski). We have created the link below to make it easy for you or your parents to donate. Please pass this on so we can see Pitcairn and Cawse with pink hair! link: Reddam-house-breast-cancer-fundraiser
