The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 22, Issue 22 Friday 12th August 2022 Page 1 Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 22 Issue 22 Friday 12th August 2022 IN THIS ISSUE: • Music Highlights • Year 7 Hebrew • Public Speaking • Athletics Championships Plus more...

The Athletics Championships on Wednesday, held for the first time since COVID sees none of the Middle School students ever having attended one in High School before. That being the case, this was something to celebrate and make a memorable day of at the ES Marks Athletics Field. Great fun was had by all and a glance at the records show that there are still school records held by some of the teaching staff as well as many of the student sport staff. My thanks to Mr Kable and his team for arranging a fun filled event in which our students could challenge themselves.

The HSC Music Performance Trials were held this week on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the students' actual HSC performances in Week 7 of this term.

Great news for three of these Music students who do Voice as an instrument is that they have all three received early university offers for the Conservatorium next year following their auditions in the holidays. Well done to Jack Futcher, Gabriel Jones and Zach Ahrens.

Dear Parents and Caregivers, I would like to welcome Helen Dalakiaris to the school. She will be teaching Middle School Maths and comes with a wealth of experience from St Spyridon College, and a passion for working with students to extend their abilities in mathematics. All the Sydney Eisteddfod results are now in and they are fantastic and reflect the importance Reddam places on Public Speaking. The Radio Announcing results are very pleasing bearing in mind that this term our students are launching their own radio show in collaboration with Eastside Radio 89.7FM. Our ten students involved in this project have had their training and induction and are rearing to get going. The results of the Radio Announcing were a clean sweep for Reddam in each age group:

15 - 17 Years

Georgie Davis 1st Jack Myers 2nd Jamie Levitt 3rd Adi Alroy Highly Commended 13 Years Lucas Buchanan 1st Emma Bradburn 2nd Portia Schebesta 3rd Sarah Mueller Highly Commended Tasha Rogoff Highly Commended A complete list of results are on page 3. Our 2022 Year 12 Soccer Team wore their jerseys for the final time last weekend. Mr Palmer said the boys were very passionate about their football and finished the season on a high with a 2 1 win over St Aloysius.

These selections need to be completed by Wednesday 17th August.

Fifty five of our Year 9 Art students left for their annual Art Retreat to Bundanon on Friday. This is always a highlight of their year and we look forward to their stories on their return on Sunday afternoon. My thanks to the Art Department for creating this opportunity for these artists to be engaged and immersed in the artmaking process. Have a great weekend and week ahead, Dave Pitcairn

Australian Youth Orchestra 2023 Applications Now Open

@REDDAM The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 22, Issue 22 Friday 12th August 2022 Page 5 Music Studio Recitals

Reddam

This term, all of the students in our instrumental programme have the chance to perform for their family and friends at one of the many informal "Studio Recitals". These are a wonderful, relaxed chance to showcase repertoire and works in progress. These began last week with Mr & Mrs Bortolotti's recital, a chance to test run the format before the main recitals in Weeks 5 7. Students performed exceptionally well, and the feedback from parents was very generous and positive, and we are looking forward to being able to share news of our other upcoming recitals in the coming weeks.

The Australian Youth Orchestra has opened applications for their 2023 programs. From gifted, school aged students to those on a verge of a professional career, AYO provides specialised training opportunities for the next generation of musicians, composers and arts administrators. Sunday 25th - Friday 30 September This camp has been designed by skiers/boarders to give students maximum time on the snow. We will be staying at Snowy Gums Lodge at Smiggin Holes and skiing at Perisher. Subject to conditions we aim at skiing 9.00am to 5.00pm each day. Staying on snow allows us to monitor conditions across the entire resort. On the blue sky days we will be there for the 1st lifts and if there are blizzards we can keep our students warm and dry in the lodge and avoid the chaos on the road up to the ski fields. With experienced and enthusiastic teachers, the students will have a great time on the snow. The Spring Camp is open to all levels from Beginners through to Advanced Please see Mr Kable for a booking form or email: phil.kable@reddamhouse.com.au for further details.

Magen David Adom, meaning Red Star of David, was the organisation we were lucky enough to hear about in Hebrew on the fourth of August, last week. We had three special guests come in to tell us about it.

1. You arrive at the scene and there are two people, the Victim and the Offender. The Victim has been stabbed and is suffering. The Offender is unconscious. There is no one else there with you. Who do you save first?

3. A woman has reported domestic violence at least 100 times in the last year. Yet again, you get called by her but only receive screams on the call. You quickly arrive at the scene with two people, The Victim and the Offender. The Victim is badly hurt however the Offender is unconscious. There is no one else there with you. Who do you save first?

These aren’t hypothetical scenarios. They were experiences that the leader of the group had. In each of those scenarios he was faced with the challenging question of who to save first. No matter the circumstances, the answer is always the one who is more injured. Every day, Magen David Adom is saving lives. And we should all take a first aid class to make their job a little easier, as it is the least, we could do.

Magen David Adom was founded on the seventh of June 1930, (This was before the holocaust). They are Israel’s only national EMS and blood services organisation. Their job is to help in every community across the entire country of Israel. They don’t care about what religion you believe in, where you come from, what age you are or what language you speak. Together they save lives.

Tasha Rogoff – Year 7 Hebrew

The leader of the group that came to talk to us, Arye, was telling us about how the one time he was in an ambulance with a few other group members. None of them spoke English. Despite their differences they were able to communicate and rescue the patient they were dealing Bywith.then he had us all confused. How could he have communicated in a group that is so diverse. He told us that they didn't need to communicate, they all knew exactly what to do for the patient to rescue them. In Israel, students must complete 50 hours of volunteer hours if they want to graduate. Magen David Adom is one of the many things you can volunteer for. As a show of hands he asked us how many of us wanted to do that if we were in Israel. Not many of us raised our hand but he wasn’t going to give up on getting us excited about it. He decided we were going to play a game, a scenario game:

4. A woman and two kids were on their way to school. They crossed the road at the pedestrian crossing when a car was driven into them and later crashed into a fence. The woman was not hurt. But her son had broken his leg and her daughter had broken her arm. The driver was unconscious and drunk. There is no one else there with you. Which child do you save first?

2. You arrive at the scene and there are two people, the Victim and the Offender. The Offender has just crashed his car into some innocent people. The Offender was drunk and now is unconscious in his car. The Victim is in critical condition and no one else was hurt. There is no one else there with you. Who do you save first?
