Star of the week definitely goes to Sophia Glasson who together with her teammates, won the Silver Medal of Junior Women's Foil Team at Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2022 in London.

In the key semi final against Canada, the Canadians were leading 15:9 after three bouts when Sophia took the piste and stormed a 10 point performance to bring the scores even at 19:19. In her 3rd bout in the team bouts, she presented another convincing performance of 6:1, stretching Australian' team lead from 2 points to 7 points, paving a solid way for victory, beating Canada 45:37. She also fenced individual events in Senior Women's Foil and Junior Women's Foil, finishing 11th (2nd highest ranking among all Australian fencers) and 6th (highest ranking among Australian fencers) respectively, very promising and consistent performance from a 14 year old. Congratulations Sophia, we are exceptionally proud of your achievements.

Firstly, the HSC Music Recital on Monday night where the audience was treated to a selection of performances from the seventeen Music 1, Music 2, and Music Extension students from this year’s cohort as they work towards their final exams in a fortnight. The evening was a celebration of excellence on the back of some extremely hard work by the students, their tutors and their teachers. The talent on display was breathtaking. On top of that, students have been finalising their individual submitted composition projects for their HSC, each having been workshopped and eventually recorded by professional musicians. The process is rewarding for the students who are able to learn from feedback from the performers right up to this final stage, making their last adjustments to the music to create thoughtful pieces, idiomatically written for the intended instruments. These scores and recordings will be submitted to the external examiners and will form part of the students' HSC Music mark. This year we had 7 String Quartets, a String Trio featuring Classical Guitar, a duet for Tenor Saxophone and Piano, a trio for Piano, Flute and Electric Bass, and a Saxophone Quartet with Vibraphone This was followed on Wednesday night by the “Surviving the HSC” seminar presented by Danni Klein. Her humorous but important tips and strategies albeit late in the year could not be more relevant as the Year 12 students go into their Trial Examinations starting next week Thursday. Parents really enjoyed getting back together on the campus and it was good to once again have personal face to face interactions.

The renovations and upgrade of the Bondi Learning Centre, set to begin in the coming weeks, mean that these examinations will be written off site. The Church on the Marketplace, 400 Oxford St, Bondi Junction will be the venue for this year’s Trial and Final Examinations for the Year 12 students. The Trials will be an exact replica of the Finals with the external supervising team taking charge of both sets of exams. I hope that the Year 12s have an efficient and effective last week of preparation prior to starting next week.

Dear Parents and Caregivers, It was fantastic to welcome parents into the school for two events which have either been cancelled or online over the last two years.

This week I have had the real pleasure of interviewing most of the current Year 12 cohort. These meetings have left me inspired and excited. To date, I have not had more positive, constructive meetings with students ever. They are all aware of the job at hand and completely on top of what they should be doing at this stage of the year and are without exception doing their best. They have been on time, positive, motivated and have left me with a quiet confidence in their performance in their Final HSC Examinations. I was hoping to motivate them and give them last minute strategies on how to tackle their last ten weeks before their HSC, and it has been they who have left me motivated, confident and aware that they are ready to launch themselves from the fantastic platform that they have created at school. All the very best for the next ten weeks.

Our Public Speakers continue their run of form with Marlena Pasvolsky and Emily Miller entering the Legacy Public Speaking Competition last week. They were required to present a five minute prepared speech and an impromptu speech on "The Ripple Effect". Congratulations to both Marlena and Emily, and it was wonderful that Marlena was selected to move through to the Regional Finals, taking place at the end of the month. Ms Knight and Mrs Collier were very excited by the Dance Eisteddfod success last weekend at the Dance Spec Competition. The Junior Dance Company received a Highly Commended in their Year 7 9 Contemporary section and a Highly Commended in their Year 7 9 Jazz section. The competition was extremely tough with over 10 competitors in each section. For their last competition for the year, the girls performed exceptionally well and did Reddam proud. Click below images for links to the performances. Year 9 art students had a spectacular weekend at the annual Bundanoon Art Retreat. They were involved in a sophisticated program of artmaking, exploration and discovery. Our students learnt about artist Arthur Boyd and his varied interactions within the artworld. They completed many works looking specifically at drawing and painting the landscape, charcoal and still life. The Year 9’s completed drawings in the bush whilst being inspired by the sounds of birds and the fresh country air. Congratulations Year 9 on all your commitment, hard work and ability to challenge yourselves to see more in the artmaking process. Acrylic painting in the landscape, charcoal drawings in the bush, ink and pen drawings by the Shoalhaven river. Robbie Burnett is to be thanked for coordinating and organising this wonderful opportunity for our stuOndents.Thursday, the Year 12 Geography students participated in a geography field trip to Bondi Beach to undertake primary research on the biophysical conditions of the local environment. Students worked in small groups, making a hypothesis to predict the results of their tests at different locations in the coastal environment and then collected results. They will be preparing a report to share their findings with their classmate’s next lesson.

YEAR 12 MARKETING CASE STUDY EXCURSION

Victor Xu Star Business Student

We arrived at Taronga Zoo (its now called the Taronga Conservation Society) in the welcoming arms of Ash, our guide. Ash brought us to the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning where we were taken to a themed classroom habitat of the ‘Bushland’ and the study of their marketing strategies. Our classroom was intertwined with animals of the environment as we learnt about Taronga Zoo as a conservationist and business, with birds and marsupials coming and going during the presentation of the Marketing of Taronga. After the immense hassling and promises of a mind boggling spectacle by Mrs Muscat and Mrs Pascoe, we reluctantly went to the Free Flight Birds Exhibition that overlooked the stunning Darling Harbour view. The event lived up to the high expectations that Mrs Muscat and Mrs Pascoe set as owls, vultures and native Australian birds swooped through the crowd and performed a show for us. From there, we were all set free to roam and experience the zoo. Our obvious first destination was the Food Court, where many Reddam Business Studies students feasted on Dinosaur nuggets and chips. The tiger trek exhibition recommended by Ash was fascinating. We were brought on an immersive experience, boarding a flight to Indonesia and being transported to the beautiful forests of Way Kambas National Park; seeing the magnificent Sumatran Tigers. The experience was not just an attraction but a message on conservation and sustainability. Overall, the excursion was eventful and interesting, wandering through different habitats and environments within the zoo, learning about different species and most importantly having fun. The only downside to the whole Business excursion was that I missed out on seeing Taronga’s West Lowland Gorillas, but the gift shop and Sky Safari definitely made up for it.

Sunday 25th - Friday 30 September This camp has been designed by skiers/boarders to give students maximum time on the snow. We will be staying at Snowy Gums Lodge at Smiggin Holes and skiing at Perisher. Subject to conditions we aim at skiing 9.00am to 5.00pm each day. Staying on snow allows us to monitor conditions across the entire resort. On the blue sky days we will be there for the 1st lifts and if there are blizzards we can keep our students warm and dry in the lodge and avoid the chaos on the road up to the ski fields. With experienced and enthusiastic teachers, the students will have a great time on the snow. The Spring Camp is open to all levels from Beginners through to Advanced Please see Mr Kable for a booking form or email: phil.kable@reddamhouse.com.au for further details.

Early Entry is open to all Year 12 applicants and relies solely on a school assessment of student attributes and abilities to determine their suitability for entry. The assessment is based around the student’s ability to work and learn independently, as well as their overall potential for academic success at UNE. Students can apply to UNE early, receive an offer and secure a place at university, even before ATARs are released. This gives students certainty to begin making other arrangements such as where to live and finding part time work.
