Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The Year 12 Valedictory evening at the SCG was wonderful for so many reasons. To be able to celebrate this important milestone or rite of passage together with Year 12s, their parents and their teachers for the first time since 2019 was incredible. It certainly highlighted how important and significant face to face celebrations are. It was the culmination of their schooling and the school saying farewell to the most incredible group of young men and women. Congratulations to this cohort on the mature, thoughtful and memorable way that you completed your last week at school. We are exceptionally proud of them and look forward to celebrating their results with the Reddam community on Thursday 15th December.

Congratulations to Gabriel Stafford, of this cohort, who has been nominated for possible inclusion in HSC Showcase, Encore, a selection of performances and compositions from HSC Music students. His guitar performance would have impressed the examiners as one of the best performances in NSW.

The rest of the school carried on at full steam, interrupted only by the Queen's Memorial Public Holiday on Thursday.

The new Year 12 Drama students had their annual incursion of a live production of 'Norm and Ahmed' by Alex Buzo, a play which is one of their core texts for HSC Drama, to be performed at Bondi today.

Ava Bova 5th Javelin

Aston Lake 4th 1500 metres

Sophia Garvin 3rd 3000 metres

Tomi Reynaldo 1st 100m Hurdles, 1st 800 metres, 1st 400 metres, 3rd 200 metres. These amazing results by Tomi are the best any Reddam student has achieved in the history of our school at this level of competition.

Congratulations to all our athletes with a special mention for Tomi.

Ms Bub has been inspired by the work the Year 7 students have produced in Design and Technology this term. They created vases and vessels after studying the wild designs of the Memphis Group from the 1980s, known for their gedevelopedo technical designs (isometric drawings) as part of their portfolios. We hope you enjoy some of the amazing products serving a range of uses in your homes. More images on pages 4 and 5.

The Year 10 Art students have been busy developing a Mini Body of Work, which gives them a taste of the expectations for their last two years of the subject. Images can be viewed on pages 10 and 11.

Year 9 Elective Drama students presented individual performances as part of their Term Assessment, taking to the stage solo to deliver a variety of monologues applying techniques of Realism to entertain and engage their audience. These talented students delivered a range of dramatic and comedic performances with characters placed in a variety of situations from dating dilemmas and parental problems to deceitful discoveries and pimple popping panic.

We are proud of our Year 9 Drama students and the effort they have put into developing their final performances for the term. Well done. A spread of images can be viewed on pages 8 and 9.

Jazz Spira of Year 10 had some amazing results when she attended the show jumping at Willinga Park on the South Coast. She and her horses, Avenly Bundy and Outlawed W, came away with two first places and a 5th place across the weekend, with the highlight being her win of the junior 1.10m. She will now go on to represent NSW in the Equestrian Interschools Nationals to take place at the end of September in Sydney.

Chris and Emma welcomed Mia Liv Breheny into the world at 9.34am on Tuesday. Mum and bub are both healthy and happy as is Ryan with his little sister. Congratulations to the Breheny family

YEARS CHINESE CONTINUERS

Fried rice (炒饭, chǎo fàn) and dumplings (饺子, jiǎo zi) are two popular Chinese dishes worldwide. It is believed that fried rice was first developed during the Sui Dynasty in China and dumplings were invented in Eastern Han Dynasty. There are many varieties of fried rice and dumplings. All of them have their own specific list of ingredients.

Year 8 Chinese Continuers have been studying “Food and Drinks” this term. Year 9 Chinese Continuers have been studying “Shopping” and revising food vocabulary. As a co curricular activity and a celebration of the successful completion of Term 3, Year 8 Chinese Continuers ate fried rice and Year 9 Chinese Continuers ate dumplings in their last Chinese lessons of this term. team.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CULTURAL DAY - THURSDAY 20 OCTOBER

YEAR HEBREW

As the rain thudded against the ground of the rooftop on the fifteenth of September, the Year 7 Hebrew class came for a ‘surprise’ The SHOFAR FACTORY came to our school and met us on the rooftop so that we could make our very own shofars; horns which are made from the horn of a ram.

First, we learnt about Rosh Hashanah, meaning the ‘head of the year’. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year and is celebrated each year with sweet foods to symbolise a sweet new year. These include: apples dipped in honey, honey cake and round challah. Hearing the sound of a shofar on Rosh Hashanah is a mitzvah and we learnt how to play it.

To make a shofar, we use the horn of the ram because it is a kosher animal. We learnt that to produce the horn, they had to cut the cartilage out from the inside to make it hollow. Then we had a practical demonstration with a saw cutting the tip of the horn to create the mouth hole for the shofar. Then it was our turn no, not to saw the mouthpiece, that part was already done for us we each rushed to the tables to pick our very own shofar, some were lighter browns, and some were black. We put on our gloves and apron and began sanding the shofar to make it smooth. We were given a tub of varnish which most of us didn't know what to do with. Some of us took way too much so that when we rubbed it in, there would be clumps of it and due to the weather, it had no desire of drying. Others applied just enough and had a polished final result. We each took our own home in a little bag when it was the end of the day. As soon as I got home, I practised blasting my brother's ears off.
