Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to Term 4. I hope a rejuvenating holiday was had by all.

There were so many school activities that our children enjoyed in the holidays that deserve a mention:

The Reddam International Community Service Project to Nepal was a highlight for the twenty students who represented the school together with Mrs. Pelosi and Mr. Hattingh.

I include a report from Sophie Marcolina on the experience later in this newsletter.

all put in with editing and ensuring the show sounded as engaging as it does is a testament to their hard work and skill. What a natural bunch of broadcasters you’ve got at Reddam House. I am seriously impressed with the show that went to air tonight.”

Jamie Holdcroft and Daniel van Heerde, who operate the canteen at Bondi were featured in the Sydney Morning Herald on the last day of the holidays (10th October). The article was so popular that they were asked to do an interview with 2GB’s Deb Knight. Nearly 100,000 people were listening at the time. The high school students taking their canteen by storm Congratulations Jamie and Daniel, entrepreneurs of note.

On Thursday 29th September at 5:30 pm the first episode of "The Crumble" went to air on Eastside FM. This is a weekly half hour slot that some of our talented Year 9 students have written, produced, and performed.

They will be presenting a total of 12 episodes this was the first of six episodes this side of the year and the next six next year you can listen live next Thursday night at 5.30 pm (our usual timeslot).

Congratulations to the students involved in this particular episode: Marli Pasvolsky and Emily Miller (the main coordinators), with Jessica Levy, Jasmine Cohen, Georgie Davis, James Bradburn, and Maria Keis.

You can listen to the episode here: The Crumble 89.7 Eastside FM

Managing Director of Eastside Radio, Tony Smyth had this to say about our students, “They were excellent and so professional and well prepared. The additional efforts they

Twenty Year 9 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh participants hiked The Great North Walk from Hornsby to Mt. Ku ring gai. The students bravely endured steady, heavy rain and all the leeches the weather brought. Congratulations on completing the hike despite the awful weather.

The Year 12 Class of 2022 started their HSC on Wednesday this week with English Paper 1, followed by English Paper 2, Music 1, and Music 2 on Thursday. They finish the first week of exams with Modern History on Friday. They enjoyed the first week and feel relaxed, prepared, and confident that they will do well.

In teacher news, during the holidays two teachers welcomed their babies into the world:

Tegan Barnett welcomed Roni on 28th September (photo right)

Last night we welcomed the HSC Class of 2016 back to the Bondi Campus for their 5 Year Reunion. The excitement to see each other and their teachers again made the evening really special. Catching up on their achievements and the shared memories of their school exploits made for a fun evening of nostalgia. Other student achievements include:

We are pleased to welcome Yoni Charlupski to the PDHPE Department and Dene Kermond to the Drama Department while Will Hodgson is on leave this term.

Next Sunday 23rd October from 2:00 pm, I am very proud to announce that the 5th Annual TEDxYouth@ReddamHouse will be presented in Adelaide Hall. On the 12th of October, we celebrated Sukkot with the class. We made our way down to the playground to enter the Sukkah (a temporary hut). Sukkot is a festival which is celebrated from the 9th until the 16th of October. During which it is a mitzvah to eat in the Sukkah. We learnt about how spending time in the Sukkah is unique because all other mitzvot require us to use only one or some of our limbs, but the mitzvah of the sukkah surrounds us from head to toe. The Sukkah reminds us of the miraculous clouds that kept the Jews safe while travelling through the desert to Israel. The clouds surrounded them above, below, and all around to look after them. They protected the Jews from scorpions and snakes and the burning hot sand and even cleaned their clothes. Another mitzvah we do on Sukkot is shaking the four types of plants together. These are the lulav, etrog, hadasim and aravot. We hold these together and shake them to show that we are incomplete without every Jew. We then shake them in 6 different directions symbolising how Hashem is found everywhere.

We each had a turn at shaking the lulav and etrog and then ate a cookie and challah in the Sukkah after saying a brachah. Overall it was a great experience!

Going on the Nepal community service project trip with school this September was a life changing journey that I loved and will never forget. Being immersed in a new culture filled with colour, beauty and peace was an amazing experience. Even though a lot of the people in Nepal are poor and don’t have much, they are sweet and caring and have a sense of community and gratitude.

We started our journey in Kathmandu. We all loved trying new and unique foods. My personal favourites were the momos, which are steamed vegetable dumplings, and a sweet lassi, which is like a sour yogurt drink.

The highlight of the trip for me was our community service initiative at the Shree Ram Janaki Basic School. When we walked into the school, the kids were cheering and we were greeted with kind smiles and flowers from the teachers. I loved meeting the kids and learning some fun new Nepalese dances and words. It felt so rewarding to be giving back to such a nice community. The fundraising money that we had raised prior to the trip went into helping buy new equipment for the school. We as a group helped dig and build a new school building for the kids. We also painted them a new mural on one of the walls of the school. After four days of hard work, we celebrated with all the families and kids from the school with a Nepalese feast.

After the community service project, we embarked on a four day treacherous hike in the mountains. The hike was fun but got a bit interesting at times with the heavy rain. Leeches were crawling on people’s faces as we slipped our way up and down the mountains. Nonetheless, the hike had amazing views, great company, and fun times. The Sherpas and porters who carried all our luggage and guided us safely on our hike were amazing.

The team of Reddam students was led by our World Challenge leader, Alex. He was an amazing guide with great sarcasm and jokes. He helped to inspire us to work together. Our group got along really well and learned a lot about each other. We became one big family.

Overall this trip was a once in a lifetime experience that I would love to do again. I made some amazing memories and new friends that will stay with me forever.

CAREERS NEWS

Our Access Melbourne website has been updated with details about our recent changes for 2023 applicants, including details about our new First in family category and expanded eligibility for our Disadvantaged financial background category.

There are nine Access Melbourne categories, which correlate to VTAC's Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) categories. Domestic students can select all categories that are relevant to their circumstances as part of their SEAS application.

School leaver SEAS/Access Melbourne applicants can receive guaranteed entry if they achieve the Guaranteed ATAR, satisfy course prerequisites and are eligible under one of these categories:

Disadvantaged financial background

Resident of a regional or remote area

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

The list of Victorian secondary schools determined to be under for 2023 entry is now available on our website.

Educational Access Scheme

A reminder that students must apply for EAS and upload all documents by 22 November 2022 to ensure their application is considered in the first ATAR based offer round on 22 December.

If a student has applied for EAS and received an email from UAC about supplying documents, this is just a reminder. They can upload their supporting documents progressively, as they become available, but they must have them all uploaded by the 22 November deadline.

Students will be notified of their EAS eligibility on 15 December and will then have until midnight on 16 December to finalise their course preferences.

Schools Recommendation Scheme

Over the past few months, we have had many students from Years 10 and 11 asking about early offers. Please advise all your students that they can only apply for SRS when they are in Year 12.

We have also had many enquiries from students who are unable to lodge an SRS application. It is usually because the student hasn't submitted their UAC application yet. Students must submit a UAC application before they can submit an SRS application. Students must decide on the order of their course preferences by 3 November. The first SRS offers will then be released on 11 November.
