Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 8 | 24 March 2023
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The NSW State elections are this weekend, and the Association of Independent Schools of NSW has written to the three major parties, seeking commitments on our behalf on various topics. I include an edited dot-point summary of their obligations at the end of this newsletter, as provided to AISNSW.
This week our Year 7 and Year 9 students completed their NAPLAN assessments. We trust all students did their very best.
The High School Musical: Footloose rehearsals are ramping up, and we look forward to the three performances next week. Wednesday, March 29th at 7 pm, Thursday, March 30th at 10 am, and Thursday, March 30th at 7 pm
Tickets are on sale at Premier Ticketek LINK
The summer sports program is drawing to a close, with many teams involved in playoffs and Grand Finals. I include all these achievements:
TOUCH FOOTBALL
Last Saturday, our girls finished the Touch Football season, playing the Semi-Finals and Grand Finals in one day. Our Year 8 and Year 9 Teams did so well, winning their semi-finals but fell short in the Grand Final, coming away with the Runners Up trophy. Our Year 10 Girls nailed the day, winning the semi and taking the Title in the Grand Final.
Two of our girls were named best and fairest for their Divisions to round off a remarkable season. Congratulations to Piper Hovey and Savanah Charles on winning these awards.

TENNIS
In tennis news, Saturday saw the Northern Suburbs Schools Tennis Association Competition Finals. Reddam had three teams playing in the Finals, and while all three played exceptionally well we just couldn't get on top of our opponents. Congratulations on all three teams finishing up Runners Up in their respective Grades.
6 - Laura Nihill (Y10) and Ester Cacinni (Y8) Reddam 3
7 - Oliver Kalan (Y7) and Oren Shaki (Y7) Reddam 6
WATER POLO
Last Saturday, our Senior Boy's Water Polo Team played their final game together. While the Year 11 and 10 boys will return in Term 4, we will farewell our Year 12 boys and thank them for all they have done in our program over the past six years. Thanks, Xavier, Dasher, Max, and Aidan.
Years 10, 11 & 12 Art students visited the Art Gallery of NSW to view this week's Art Express exhibition. They were excited to see the standard of work produced by the HSC students of 2022, and the differing interpretations of what a Body Of Work might look like. They have relished viewing the view of Reddam
8 - Kadyn Lowe (Y7) and Phoenix Palermo (Y7) Reddam 8
student Sam Clifford, whose photographs are featured in the exhibition. All students have come away with great ideas and inspiration for their artmaking.
Congratulations to our Year 7 Debating Team of Brayden Chen, Richard Sun, Hartley Dixon Holden, and Aarav Daddikar, who won their second consecutive debate against Sydney Grammar. Their argument, “that we should allow businesses to fire employees based on personal online behavior (e.g., personal Facebook posts),” convinced the judges to award the debate in their favour.
Congratulations to Mia Cohen of Year 7, who has made it to the grand finals of the Isobel Anderson awards held at the Royal Academy of Dance this Sunday.
Have a great weekend and week ahead,

Year 11 Ancient History Excursion
On Monday of Week 8, our Year 11 Ancient History class went on a riveting adventure to Sydney University. We caught the school bus down to the campus, where we were greeted by guide Fran at the Chau Chak museum. At the museum, we saw a collection of artifacts from the ancient Egyptian era, ranging from mummies to shabti dolls. Then, we saw an amazing Lego construction, visually displaying Pompeii and Herculaneum through the ages (not to scale). After this, we went into a room where we handled ancient artifacts and replicated the archaeological process of recording information about the objects. Then, we had some free time to explore the rest of the museum.
Concluding this amazing day, mumma Vince took us to the Italian Bowl in Newtown, where we thoroughly enjoyed a phenomenal meal.
Thank you Ms Vince, for a fun-filled, thrilling archaeological Ancient History day!
After the success of last year's Middle and Senior School Production 'A Series of Public Apologies' we are thrilled to announce our new production 'Scaredy-Cat' by Brendan Hogan which will be opened to students in Years 8-9 and presented in Week 2, Term 4. Auditions are being held Week 10 Term 1, Monday 3rd April.
Scaredy-Cat is a quirky, comic and whacky play that follows a group of young troopers as they gather for a weekend of camping and working towards earning patches whilst trying to trap an elusive black panther which causes all sorts of trouble.
Students should read the Rehearsal Schedule carefully. Availability is required for Tuesday, Thursday afternoons and some Sundays across Term 2, 3 and 4. The Audition Package document contains extracts of the script for you to read prior to the audition. No preparation is required. Scripts will be provided on the day of the audition.

Instrumental Competition 2023
Our 2023 Instrumental Competition entries are open. Of course, very few students would have a piece ready this early in the year, so this announcement serves as motivation and planning assistance for preparing an entry by the May deadline. All students are encouraged to take the term and school holidays to work on the piece of their choice, with their teachers, and submit an entry into this online competition. All students receive written feedback, as well as RHAP points. We look forward to watching and celebrating our students' work, and you can enter as well as read more at this link: REGISTRATION

SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY
MySydney Entry & Scholarship Scheme
The E12 Early Offer and Scholarship Scheme is being discontinued as the University has introduced MySydney. Similarly to E12, MySydney provides entry at a reduced ATAR, yet a more generous scholarship of $8500 per year to students residing in a low socioeconomic area*. MySydney does not require a written application and eligible students will be identified automatically via UAC.
*Residing at the time of UAC application in an area listed in the bottom 25% of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Socio-Economic Index for Areas (SEIFA), Index of Education and Occupation.
Scholarships
The decision was made to discontinue the Sydney Scholars Award. With such a large volume of applications each year, far outweighing the number of Awards available to students, it was decided it was not fair for students to be spending so much time on their applications as such a crucial time of year. In preparation for the change, the Chancellor’s Award was recently expanded to include students who received a 99.90 ATAR (previously awarded to 99.95 only). This cohort accounted for a large number of the Sydney Scholars Awards historically given to students. Preliminary 2023 offer and enrolment numbers also show that more students who achieved an ATAR of 95.00+ received the University’s new MySydney Scholarship, than those who received the Sydney Scholars Award.
There continues to be many academic merit scholarships available at a faculty level which we encourage students to apply for. The scholarships search tool will help students discover the range of scholarships that they may be eligible for.
UAC
UAC- 2024 ADMISSIONS
Applications for the current Year 12 group will open on 5 April. UAC will email all NSW and ACT students their UAC PIN on the same day. Students from other states will use their date of birth as their PIN but will be unable to apply until later in the year when we have received student data from our interstate partners.
Applications for our Access schemes will also open on the 5 April.
This year's UAC Guide is set to be delivered to schools early in Term 2, followed by Steps to Uni for Year 10 Students and the Scaling Report for the 2022 HSC.
Schools Recommendation Scheme
There are no changes to the SRS process this year. However, the University of Sydney E12 and UNSW Gateway schemes will not be part of SRS in 2023. I am sure you will receive information about these schemes very soon, if you haven't already.
Educational Access Scheme
There are several changes to EAS this year:
The six-month rule has been removed. Applications will be assessed for disadvantages that have occurred for any length of time up until 30 September of the year they complete Year 12.
Disadvantage codes F01K and F01S, which allowed students to claim financial disadvantage based on COVID-19 government payments, have been removed.
There is a new SEIFA disadvantage code, AG02, which works in the same way as AG01 but draws on the Australian Bureau of Statistics Index of Education and Occupation instead of the Index of Relative Socioeconomic Advantage and Disadvantage. The day after they submit their application, students identified as meeting the criteria for either of these disadvantages will be notified that UAC has automatically created an EAS application for them.
The student's document cover sheet will include a checklist to help them understand what they need to provide.
The Educational Impact Statement will require schools to answer fewer questions, making it a quicker and easier process for you.
UAC - will also host another online Year 12 Conference. Last year, 3,500 students and parents logged in to watch, making it the biggest UAC Digital event to date. When: 26 April @ 6pm.
Registrations will open soon and details will be announced when available.
