Student Achievements
Dear Parents and Caregivers, One of the great joys of being part of a primary school environment is to watch the students engaging with each other, with their teachers, and with their parents and families at the various cultural and sporting activities during the year. Their joy of life and enthusiasm for all they take on is a refreshing balm in a world which all too easily becomes bogged down in conflict, worries and grinding routines. From the moment the students arrive at school each morning, their exuberant spirit lifts the place, and it is really special to watch them greet each other, chat about the events of the past few hours, and then head off to class. This same spirit flows through into the way they tackle everything else that comes their way, whether in persisting with a musical piece, or practising an oral, or holding out for a win on the sports fields. As we all know only too well, positive relationships require a two-way interaction. We cannot just take from others and expect the relationship to flourish. In the same way, at the heart of our school’s philosophy is our motto of ‘We Shall Give Back’. And lest we think that this only implies some sort of financial transaction, it is far more valuable than mere money. Anne Frank once wrote that “No one has ever become poor by giving.” Then someone else built on this idea by suggesting that “Giving to others is the greatest gift you can give yourself.” While both of these examples might apply to financial generosity, which is of course also important, they apply equally to the way we give of ourselves to others. During the course of the year, the teachers often speak to the students about their relationships and how we should treat each other. As can be understood, a school is a microcosm of society, with a multitude of personalities constantly interacting with each other. And just as in society, The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter

these interactions inevitably bring with them conflicts and disagreements. Learning how to navigate one’s way through these challenges can be confusing for children, especially as their brains develop and hormones start playing a part. As a result, frequent conversations about relationships and also about the tricky topic of conflict resolution are critical. Also, in a world which seems to be increasingly focused on ‘me’, we hope that the students will start to realise that the more they show care, affection and support to others, the more they will grow in their own sense of self-esteem and wellbeing. The theme of friendship will be delved into next week, as the Year 3 and 4 students enjoy their Heart of Friendship incursion, on Thursday. Later that day, the Year 5 and 6 students will explore their own friendships as they learn how to put out potential Friendship Fires – those conflicts which potentially damage friendships. Both these events will hopefully build an ever-deepening awareness of others and of how each of us can contribute to a happy and healthy school environment. At a time in the world in which peace seems to be in short supply, it is good to recognise an organisation that promotes peace amongst the youth across the globe – as well as one of our own students who did incredibly well in their recent art competition. Towards the end of last

year, Ruby Levitt was announced as the winner in the Peace Pals International Art Competition, in the Age 11-13 category. The competition had ‘Kindness’ as its theme and included the words ‘May Peace Prevail On Earth’ on all the artworks. Ruby’s prize is an impressive 6-foot Peace Pole, which has ‘May Peace Prevail On Earth’ written on it in four languages. These have been erected across the world and are an apt reminder to all of us of that important message. Well done, Ruby! Our students continue to excel on the sports fields, and we congratulate the following students who have been selected to attend the ASISSA Basketball trials at Hills Basketball Stadium today: Lauren Lim, Zach Macintyre, Joshua Tancred and Micah Shields. Then, two students also competed in the ASSISA Tennis trials, which was a competition style trial. Congratulations to Jamie Gor and Alex LaPorte, who finished first and second respectively. On Monday, the Music Department officially kicks off the year’s very full programme of musical events, with the Welcome Recital. We wish all our students everything of the best for this event and for the year. Our school has become synonymous with excellence in music and the arts, and we hope that all students will make full use of the opportunities on offer to expand their abilities. The Year 1s get to head off to Taronga Zoo. This wonderful space in our city offers an incredible learning opportunity for the students and they will no doubt return having learned plenty about the natural world and our surroundings. KINDERGARTEN Our week in Kindergarten started off with a bang! Everyone was excited to come to school dressed in either pink or red to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Students got creative and made headbands decorated with love hearts and glitter. They were so proud to wear these home at the end of the day! This week during our ‘Marvellous Me’ unit, students explored the different structures that make up a family and they shared information with their peers on who is in their own family. The students shared photographs and discussed their favourite things to do with their loved ones. It was another great way to get to know one another in the class. During Mathematics, students explored the concepts of measurement and time. When learning about measurement, students learnt the importance of vocabulary when describing the length or height of an object compared to another. Students had fun using informal units to measure different objects in the classroom. When learning about time, we listed different parts of the day including morning, afternoon and night. Students demonstrated their knowledge of this concept through role-play and acting out different activities most commonly held during these times.

YEAR 1 Year 1 has settled wonderfully into their class groups and are demonstrating a strong sense of belonging to their respective classes. They are demonstrating ownership over their spaces by treating them with respect, and being responsible for keeping them tidy. An extremely important part of our English curriculum is speaking and listening. This week and last week we have really enjoyed hearing from individual members of the class as they share their news with us about their holidays. It is important that children learn from an early age that they have something worth sharing, and also that other people have something worth listening to. It gives them a chance to creatively express their ideas, and feel valued by their peers. The earlier they start the more skills they will learn and the more confident they will be to talk and listen when they are older. During news time we focus on clear and coherent speech, a steady pace, and looking at your audience. Just as important is the etiquette of respectful listening, and thoughtful questioning and commenting from the audience which supports individuals in the art of answering questions. This week in English, Year 1 consolidated last week’s study of nouns by exploring proper nouns. We continued our exploration of the author Anthony Browne with a focus on the books ‘My Mum” and “My Dad”, with a lens of descriptive writing and the use of similes. In Maths, we explored addition and subtraction, and number bonds. As with all the mathematical concepts we introduce, we use hands-on manipulation of materials, as well as recording our findings, to help understand the new concepts. In History and Geography, we used photographs of families over time to investigate how families change over the years. We asked: What changes in a family and why, and what elements stay the same? We used photos of our own families to extend this reflection to our own families. It was beautiful seeing the students discussing their own family dynamics using these photos. In Science, we continue our investigation into light and sound and this week we asked the question “Is light needed for an object to be seen?”. The students tested their own theories using a box which blocks out light. An essential part of this activity is the ability to articulate their own theories and reasoning for their ideas. The students have been enjoying all their specialist lessons and are becoming familiar with their new environment and daily routine.

YEAR 2 The Year 2 students have really started to work well together in their classrooms. They are becoming more organised, confident, resilient, persistent and they are getting along well with each other and the teachers. These five social-emotional skills are represented by the five ‘Keys to Success’ that the children were reintroduced to this week. The teachers have introduced and started to read the story ‘Lost! A true tale from the bush’ by Stephanie Owen Reeder to the class. It tells the true story of three children who were lost in the bush for many days in 1864. The students compared our ways of life with the children in the book, which ties in nicely with our History lessons. In Mathematics, the focus has been on skip counting and adding 10 to any given number. Games were played and number lines were used, too. The children also practised reading and writing o’clock and half past times. The more exposure to this at home, the better they get! In English, Year 2 investigated the different ways to make the ‘long a’ sound, how to identify a proper noun and how to make short sentences more interesting. In our writing session, we looked at the structure of information reports and sorted information about the Green Turtle into appropriate subheading.

YEAR 3 What a wonderful week it was in Year 3! In History, we all became historians, carefully studying texts and artefacts to pull out clues about the past. We focussed on finding evidence to support our theories and also continually asked the question, “What does this evidence possibly tell us?” Students studied the first map on which the name Australia was mentioned and enjoyed listening to stories about the adventures of Trim, Captain Matthew Flinders’ cat. Best of all, we all enjoyed role-playing as Flinders after creating our very own Captain’s hat! Mathematics was also very exciting with the first Practice Maths Cycle Test being held on Wednesday. Students did exceptionally well in carefully reading the questions and showing their working out. Many remarked on how much they had learnt about pace, after their previous Practice English Cycle in Week 3. It is clear to see continual practice makes perfect! Finally, students enjoyed continuing with their narrative writing, learning about how to open with a sensational start using onomatopoeia, action or a description of the setting or characters. It was interesting to listen to the many ideas about the problems our characters could face and how these problems could possibly be solved in an interesting way. Well done, Year 3, on another tremendous week.

YEAR 4 Week 4 began ablaze with reds and pinks as the students dressed specially in recognition of Valentine’s Day. As we learned about the day’s origins, we understood that Valentine’s Day is not all about chocolates and roses, but rather empathising with others and showing kindness towards them; two skills that this cohort does on a daily basis. In English, we started to embellish our descriptive writing by activating the five senses. The sights, sounds, feels, smells and tastes which students added to their writing helped plunge the reader headfirst into their imagination and the results are very exciting. ‘The bright, vibrant sun shone down on the shore. The sound of the crashing waves created a beat to the celebrative music. The Eura and British men danced along to the traditional music played by some of the natives. The burning sand beneath their feet crunched with every step they made.
‘The ancient, decaying, nightmarish giant of a ship lurked at the bottom of the deep, wide undersea trench. This towering, submerged tail ship was in good condition for a sunken monolith. With tattered sails and a rotten crows nest, it had been there for quite a while’ Harriette Ho , 4D
We ended our week with School Photographs and, just as we had started the week, the students brought their best behaviour and their happiest smiles for the occasion. Sacha Garben-Thew, 4R Bravo, Year 4!

YEAR 5 & 6 SCIENCE Year 5 In Science this week, Year 5 started their chemistry module. Students investigated the different states of matter, how they are represented in diagrams and the properties each state of matter possesses. Students are now able to clearly identify and describe each state of matter. Students also took part in their first assessed practical this week. This involved students investigating the viscosity of three different liquids and recording their results accurately as part of a full scientific investigation. Year 6 This week in Science, Year 6 students also started their chemistry module. To start this module, students were introduced to the periodic table, highlighting the different parts of the table, what the symbols/numbers on the table mean and how to read the table correctly. Students also took part in their first assessed practical. This practical involved students investigating the strength of different materials. Students will refer back to this practical later on in the term when they investigate the properties of different materials. Science Club This week in Science Club Year 3 students created chromatography butterflies. Chromatography is a process used for separating components in a mixture. Students did this by separating the different colours in felt tip pens to create a rainbow effect on filter paper. Following this, students folded and tied their filter paper to create a butterfly.

YEAR 5 & 6 ENGLISH This week, students in Year 5 refined their writing of body paragraphs using the PEEL format. Willem Stewart, wrote this engaging body paragraph. Here is his example. Finally, Australia has no guns or weapons making it a safe country. Having no guns makes Australia safe as no-one with bad intentions can hurt others. In places such as America, many crimes happen every day due to anyone being able to get a gun. This is why it is onehundred percent guaranteed that Australia should be considered a lucky and safe country.
This week students in Year 6 have been practicing writing extended descriptive responses. They refined their skills through the use of incorporating various language techniques to heighten the five senses. Here is an example of descriptive writing by Isabella Winkler. Notice how she has also used various sentence starters. As the grey sky glared down upon the crumbling sand, the sun was barely visible behind the clouds creeping in the sky. Storm was brewing. Shadows shone across the sludgy brown sand like animals patrolling the beach, waiting for the right time to pounce. A dark, musty smell was quickly overpowering the once fresh air as lightning cracked in the sky. The ocean roared, the waves crushed and still, nothing rang louder than the eerie howl of the wind smashing against the tattered sails. Polluted water lapped up against the algae masts, yet nothing could diminish the glory of the many ships crowding the harbour. They rose high into the air looking down at the unscathed land in disdain.

YEAR 5 & 6 MATHEMATICS After discussing consecutive numbers, Year 5 did some fabulous mathematical wonderings this week. They questioned and investigated if all numbers are sums of consecutive numbers. They wondered how many ways one number could be written as the sums of consecutive numbers. Anika Martin wondered, “What is the sum of all consecutive numbers from one to a hundred?”
After Eva Herson posed the question,” When you multiply 3 consecutive numbers what are they always divisible by?”, she proceeded to support her question with a convincing argument and proof. Cael Barton and Nina Wanis listed all the three consecutive numbers that added to give a total between 180 and 210. Year 6 reviewed rounding off, using it as a tool for estimation and working mathematically. They discussed rounding money, given that in Australia there are no 1 cent and 2 cent pieces. When estimating the total of a list of numbers, it was reasonable to assume that each time a number is rounded and then added, the further away it gets from the exact answer. This idea was considered and extended upon

MUSIC The children in Year 2 worked hard to learn the solfa and rhythms of 'Mr Sun' and 'Lucy Locket' this week. They enjoyed playing the game for Lucy Locket, where all the children sat in a circle and sang the song whilst passing around the 'locket' in time to the beat. Three children sat in the middle of the circle during the song with their eyes closed, and then at the end of the song, they opened their eyes and had to guess which student the locket had ended up with. The students had great fun taking it in turns to be in the middle of the circle! In Year 3 and Year 4, their revision and hard work so far this term was put to the test in their written assessments for 'Dinah' and 'Rocky Mountain', whilst Year 5 and Year 6 both worked on their group percussion performances. The students enjoyed playing on the auxiliary percussion instruments, such as claves, guiro, djembe drum, egg shaker and the triangle! All groups worked hard to make sure that they kept a clear pulse and played their part accurately. Kindergarten classes spent their lesson this week learning about highs and lows in music. Their new song for the week, 'See Saw', used the two notes 'So' and 'Mi' and they learnt to show the pitch of the song using solfa hand signs. Year 1 began their first rhythm composition of the term, using 'ta' and 'titi' rhythms. They composed a 4 beat composition using 'ta' and 'titi' in any order, and then played their pieces to each other in class. It was fabulous to hear young composers at work!

MUSIC PERFORMANCE We were overwhelmed with the responses to our video submission form, and cannot wait to continue sharing these performances with you, in both a digital and live format when permitted. Students are now largely settled in to their morning ensembles, whilst still maintaining cohorting, and our full voluntary programme has resumed with incredible participation across our primary school. Teachers have designed roster systems to allow each year group to rehearse separately, and we look forward to being able to combine these talented students. Year 2 Recorder Ensemble As the new year kicks into gear and we all settle into the rhythm of the school term, something very special happens: the Year 2 Recorder ensemble meets for the first time. Some are experienced players, some have never picked up an instrument before, some have absolutely no idea what a recorder is. They all have the same first lesson upon our meet. We learn exactly how to over-blow the recorder, making that most piercing of noises, the kind that makes you wish that recorder never existed. Why would anyone want to learn something capable of making such a horrid honk? Once you have mastered the breathing technique to avoid the aforementioned offence, there is much beauty to behold from this ancient instrument. It’s also pretty easy to pick up and play once you’ve learned the basics. You can usually sing the melodies we learn with ease, developing a strong aural relationship with written music. And, excuse me for boasting here, but we have a solidly good time at rehearsal every Tuesday morning. For the term ahead our goal is to master a 5 note scale and some preliminary pieces. Into Term 2 we hope to be performance ready and sharing our enthusiasm for the humble recorder and song.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE Year 2 String Ensemble Year 2 String Ensemble students are working on their first ensemble pieces called Picking and Pecking and Jumping Jumbucks. We are learning how to echo each other and listen to the different parts in the ensemble. Jumping Jumbucks has a lot of octave gaps which is great practice for our left hand. Picking and Packing, even though it is all pizzicato, still incorporates lots of fun without using our bows. Year 2 ensemble look forward to performing at assembly soon! Year 3-4 Guitar Ensemble This was the second week of rehearsals for the Year 3 and 4 Guitar Ensemble and they are shaping up to be an excellent group. We have begun work on an Etude (study) for Three Guitars, and it is a great piece to start learning how to read ensemble notation and how to blend and play together with balanced dynamics. It was wonderful to see that many of the students have been practising hard throughout the week and have been taking their ensemble sheet music to their guitar teachers to go over their parts. A great start for our young guitarists!

SPORT On Sunday, the Under 12 Boys Cricket team, the 'Reddam Roosters', got their first win of the season. In their first season of Stage 2 Cricket, these boys are starting to find their feet in a tough competition, against some talented teams, with plenty of new rules. Through hard work and persistence, they managed to put together a complete performance on the weekend, something that they have not managed to do all season. These boys have plenty of talent, and it was great to see them all playing at their best On the weekend in a true team victory! Well done boys.

This year's theme asks young artists to think about the world around us, the possibility of worlds beyond ours, how we understand our existence and what might be next in store for us. We want artists to hypothesise the future, analyse data, test a theory and come up with artworks which propose the potential of tomorrow. From big bangs, to single celled organisms, skywalkers and flying saucers, this is a science fiction prize like no other. PROCESS 1. Theme: SCIENCE, SPACE AND FUTURE STORIES • •
