Primary Newsletter
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What an incredible final week of the term we had in the Primary School! There is no doubt that many exhausted yet exhilarated bodies collapsed into bed each evening after the magnificent production of The Lion King Jr. And I am equally sure that everyone will relish a well deserved rest after what has been a full and productive term.
The Year 3 6 students can be justifiably proud of their efforts in this year’s dramatic production. After the pandemic curtailed this very special event on the school’s annual calendar in recent years, it was wonderful to witness it back in its full splendour again. The colourful spectacle of song, dance and acting lived up to (and indeed surpassed) all expectations and I have no doubt that memories of this production will last a lifetime.
Of course, no such undertaking happens without an enormous amount of effort from many people. From the earliest stages of dreaming and planning, through the auditions and rehearsals, countless hours were spent honing the finer details. The end result was that the costumes were incredible, as were the colourful sets, all of which formed the perfect backdrop for our students to show off their acting, dancing and singing abilities.
This single event perfectly epitomises how it takes a collective effort to make a success of a school term. I am grateful for the involvement of our parents and caregivers, not only in the daily lives of their own children but in the school as a whole. Your enthusiasm and active engagement in so many aspects of the school made a huge difference and for that we are all grateful.
I have also appreciated the continued energy and passion shown by our teachers and coaches this past term. We are fortunate to have individuals on our staff who are not only excellent in what they do, but who take a personal interest in the lives of the students, which makes all the difference. I trust that I speak on behalf of the students when I thank the teachers and coaches for all they have done this past term.
I continue to marvel at the seemingly effortless way our admin, cleaning and other support staff go about their daily business. We have all been the beneficiaries of their efforts, as the campus has looked wonderful, and the various systems have run smoothly throughout the

Finally, I express my gratitude to the students for their continued vibrancy and enthusiasm. Their smiles and joy of life have made all the difference and they have imbued the school with an energetic pulse throughout the term. I am sure that they will enjoy a well deserved break and that they will return full of energy for the final term.
A number of our students have ended the term in the best possible manner, by achieving some impressive results in a wide range of activities. Firstly, a big congratulations to our Reddam 12 netball team who played in the Grand Final over the weekend. The girls put up a strong fight against tough opposition to come away with the silver medal. The girls were outstanding throughout the season and the medal was a great reward for all their hard work. We are very proud of their efforts this term.
Tsaatchi Schebesta dances with the Brent Street Performing Arts Centre and over the weekend they competed in the Stage Fever Eisteddfod. Tsaatchi’s group came first in the jazz and hip hop sections, and second in the musical theatre and tap sections. Well done, Tsaatchi.
Pippi Pike, of Year 2, recently had an incredible experience, as she was invited to attend the Junior Fleadh (Irish music camp) in Yass with the champion Irish fiddler, Stephen Murray. What an amazing opportunity, Pippi!
While on cultural activities, it was wonderful to receive the news that not only did Ruby Levitt attend the Prizegiving ceremony for this year’s Harmony Poster Awards at Parliament House over the weekend, where she received her first place award, but she was called up again for a "Special Award", which recognised her as the only entrant in the history of the competition who has achieved a winning place for four successive years. This truly is praiseworthy, Ruby, and we are enormously proud of your achievements.
Ally Fung-Love, in Year 3, representing Gracie Barra Bondi, won gold in the Grey Belt 7 8yo Heavy Division at the 2022 Compnet Jiu Jitsu League National Championships on Sunday. This was Ally's first competitive Jiu Jitsu bout, which makes the result all the more impressive.
Eve Kalan and her team did exceptionally well at last weekend’s NSW State Club Championships for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Eve and her team, Bunnerong, competed in Level 6 (Division 1) which is the division for the top teams in Level 6 in the State and they finished 2nd overall! They also placed 2nd on Bars, 4th on Floor, 5th on Beam and 5th on Vault. Eve will now compete at the National Clubs competition in the Gold Coast on 24 26 September, for which we wish her everything of the best.

Also in gymnastics, Rhea Sotiras competed recently at the second Inner City State Trials, where she received her second consecutive Gold banding in her gymnastics, Level 4. She also received a silver ribbon in all four apparatus, with a score of 37.385. Rhea will now compete in the State Championships, where she will represent the Inner City division in October 2022. Congratulations and good luck, Rhea.
Felix Bootlis and Charlie Malavich won the tennis tournament in which they recently played, for the second time, only this time it was in the White City Green Ball competition. This was only their second term in the Green Ball competition. Well done, both of you!
Not only were our students in Years 3 6 heavily involved in the school production this week, but several of them also participated in the CIS Athletics Championships on Tuesday at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. With students competing in most of the track and field events, it was a busy day for our Reddam team. Michael Rodov got the day off to an amazing start, placing third in the Junior Boys 1500m, and thereby winning a BRONZE medal! In qualifying, Michael now adds Athletics as his second NSW PSSA Championships event this year (along with Cross Country).
Rhea Sotiris lit up the track early in the morning, placing 7th fastest overall, which gave her a place in the U8s Girls 100 Metre Dash Final. Lucia Zagora earned the title of the most successful Reddam athlete on the day. She went into the 11s Girls Shot Put with plenty of confidence, as she has been training well all season. Lucia threw a PB of 10.38m to win GOLD! Adding to this awesome achievement Lucia also shone in discus, winning a SILVER medal! Lucia is now off to the NSW PSSA Championships well done on a huge achievement.
Congratulations to all of our athletes who represented their school with such passion and determination. In addition, a huge thank you to all of our parents who supported on the day.
Please enjoy the film of this year's Reddam Idol Finals evening, held last week in Adelaide Hall. Congratulations once again to all our talented singers. The video can be viewed at this Havehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkMNGadGWYQlink:arestfulandpleasantbreak.Inparticular,we

Term 3 is done! We cannot believe how quickly the term has flown by. Kindergarten have grown SO much, and the teachers are so proud of each student and the amount of effort they have put into making this term so successful. From making rockets to reading to emergencies and many different topics throughout Maths. We have learnt so much and had so much fun along the way.
Throughout our literacy lessons we have been practising and consolidating our capital letters and writing sentences using conjunctions. Our writing has developed so much this term and we are adding more and more information using Inadjectives.Mathematics
this week we consolidated all the topics we covered throughout Term 3. We practised addition, subtraction, mass and breaking apart our teen numbers using tens and unit blocks.
Our Topic lessons consisted of reflecting on our rocket ship creations and discussing what worked and what we could have improved on. We spoke about what we would need to go into space and what we would like to bring. We are so proud of our Kindergarten students and cannot wait for another exciting and eventful term after a well deserved restful break. Enjoy your holidays everyone. We can’t wait to see you all after the break!

KINDERGARTEN
This week in English the children enjoyed the text ‘Shoes from Grandpa’ by Mem Fox. The children were able to identify skills the author uses to engage the reader. They noted the repetitive language and rhyming language. The children are becoming astute in observing the language choice and print conventions used in varying literature. Highlighting aspects like this allow the children to emulate it within their own work. We have many budding authors in our midst.
In History and Geography, the children planned for shelters on a desert island and homes for the future. The desert island designs were constructed out of natural materials and mindfully set next to food and fresh water sources. The homes of the future featured vending machine like kitchens where you could order any food you liked. It seems our architects think with their tummies!
In Science, we looked at classifying living things. We learnt the meaning of vertebrate and invertebrate. We then went on to look at birds, fish, amphibians, mammals and reptiles. We sorted pictures into groups as teams. This allowed for lots of discussion and collaborative learning.
The children have shown so much progress this term. Not only academically but also in their emotional maturity and it is very clear they are Year 1 and three quarters now. It is the end of another strong term, and they should be so proud of all they have achieved. Well done, Year 1!

YEAR 1
This week in Year 2 our students enjoyed consolidating their term’s learning and extending their knowledge across all Key Learning Areas.
In English, the long ‘e’ sound was explored, as we discovered that there is more than one way to make words which contain this. Students identified that ‘ea’, ‘ei’, ‘ie’, ‘ee’ and ‘e’ can all make the long ‘e’ sound. We built a word bank and used these words in sentences. The grammar focus was commas in lists and how to use these correctly. We had fun ‘shopping’ for toys, food and packing for holidays writing sentences with lists using the comma correctly! Our narrative writing has come along steadily as we build our knowledge of the structure of this genre by writing our own pieces. We are finishing reading ‘Charlotte’s Web’, a beautiful narrative with meaningful messages about friendship, acceptance and perseverance. The News presentations were varied and interesting this week as students share their joy of physical activities and their benefits.
The students worked busily in Mathematics, while exercising their mental arithmetic skills and building speed and accuracy each day. We covered division and repeated subtraction to solve simple problems. The students looked at the features of three dimensional objects to describe their features. We built three dimensional objects by using counters, blocks and shapes of the same size. In measurement we compared and ordered several objects based on volume and capacity using appropriate uniform informal units. We played times tables challenge games and we will continue to practise these skills.
In Science, we explored floating and sinking. Our experiment involved mandarins and water. We formed our hypotheses before we began, then we carried out our experiment and observed the occurrences. Following the scientific method, we came to our conclusions about water density and why some objects float whilst others sink.
In History and Geography, we reflected on all the various environments we learned about this term. Our lessons this week highlighted the issues of pollution and conservation of our natural environments. We must all learn to care for our planet and ensure that it is a healthy, vibrant environment for future generations.

YEAR 2
What a final week of Term 3 it was in Year 3!
In Mathematics, the students finished off their Area and Perimeter unit by looking at the square metre. Students were amazed at how large a square metre actually is. They also cleverly used their skills of estimation to answer the question, “What is smaller than, equal to, or larger than a meter squared?”
In Public Speaking, students enjoyed flexing their talking muscles during a game of Articulate! Each group was given a selection of words they needed to describe, all while avoiding the name of the object or action. There were a few interesting descriptions for things such as Scooby Doo and trousers, which had many of them in hysterics. Everyone is to be congratulated for their “give it a go” attitude, which made the game extremely enjoyable for all involved!
Finally, a huge special mention to all of the students who performed in The Lion King Junior Musical this week. The energy and enthusiasm that each of the cast brought to their role was spectacular. It has been a long run of many rehearsals and practice sessions at home, for which each student should be very proud!
We hope all of the Year 3 students and their families have a very well deserved break. All of your teachers look forward to seeing you again, refreshed, at the beginning of Term 4.

YEAR 3
In our final week of the term, our Year 4 students applied their mathematical knowledge of three dimensional objects to different challenges. Students had to defy gravity, as well as use their understanding of vertices and edges, to engineer popsicle clay stick models of their assigned 3D object. In another challenge, we analysed the forms of different animals and created 3D paper models of our favourites, using the nets of regular 3D objects, for a quite avant garde, cubism effect.
Finally, to cap off our Science topic on the Solar System, we had a look at the smallest of naturally occurring celestial bodies: meteoroids. Meteoroids are rocks from outer space, ranging in size from dust grains to giant asteroids (think the dinosaurs). When meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere and burn up, they are known as ‘meteors,’ or ‘shooting stars’. When a meteoroid survives the trip through the atmosphere and strikes the Earth, this is known as a ‘meteorite.’
With the next meteor shower, the Orionids, due to peak in Sydney on 21 22 October, and the next meteorite to hit Sydney even further away, the Year 4s weren’t about to wait for luck to find us. We modelled the impact of different sized meteorites from varying heights to discover that size really does matter when forming craters and the ensuing, sometimes deadly dust clouds (think the dinosaurs).
Congratulations on all your hard work this term, Year 4! Have a nice, restful holiday and we’ll see you again fresh for a wonderful Term 4.

YEAR 4
Year 5
In English this week, Year 5 students finished up their term’s work, although we will continue to read and write about “The One and Only Ivan” in Term 4. After the hard work in revising language conventions for assessment last week, students enjoyed some more creative work on animal rights and the economics of cruelty. Some classes created protest placards to express their views on animal rights; while other classes researched and created posters on issues relating to animal trafficking and illegal trade.
The English department wish to congratulate all Year 5 English students on their efforts in class this term. Enjoy your holidays and see you back in class, books in hand, in Term 4.
Year 6
In English this week, Year 6 students finished their unit of study on the Holocaust and the novel “Once” by Morris Gleitzman. What a challenging and fascinating term it’s been, beginning with our visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum, our reading of the story of Felix and Zelda’s journey to find their missing parents, and then learning about the painful history of this 20th century human disaster. At the same time, students have continued to develop their skills in reading comprehension and grammar, as well as analytical writing.
This week, after the rigours of revising language conventions for assessment, students enjoyed some more freeform study. Some classes worked on language conventions using our online skills platform, Literacy Planet. Other classes visited an online exhibition of survivor stories on the Sydney Jewish Museum website and created a poster about one person’s story.
The English department wish to congratulate all Year 6 English students on their efforts in class this term. See you back in class in Term 4, for your last English lessons as primary school students!

Three dimensional solids, including polyhedrons, spheres, cylinders, and cones, were the focus of our Mathematics classes this week. Year 5s linked their knowledge of polygons to deepen their understanding of faces, bases and vertices and naming prisms and pyramids. They learned that the apex, being the highest point of a solid or shape, is a vertex where two or more lines or sides meet, and it is located directly above the base of the shape. They concluded that pyramids, cones, and isosceles triangles all have apexes!
Year 6s identified and classified cylinders, cones, and spheres, noting either their flat and or curved surfaces. After discussion it was deduced that cones and cylinders do not in fact have edges. Hugo Holmes reasoned that in geometry, the term “edge” refers to the interval (straight line) formed where two faces (polygons) of a three dimensional object meet. Cones and cylinders don't have faces, so they can't have edges! Similarly, Daniel Pinski said that, if vertices in shapes are the points where two or more line segments or edges meet (like a corner), then a cone cannot have a vertex as it doesn’t have a face or an edge.

In Science this week, Year 5 students practised how to solve Hooke's law equations. Students learnt how to solve the tricky equations, the units they need to provide for each factor and what to look out for in the harder exam questions so that marks aren't dropped. Students also studied static electricity this week. Students were lucky enough to be introduced to a Van Der Graaf and learnt how this device generates static electricity. Students also developed an understanding for the uses of static electricity and how it can be

week, Year 6 students explored parallel circuits. Students were tasked with drawing and building parallel circuits that included certain components. Over the past couple of weeks students have developed an understanding for the differences between series and parallel circuits and they can correctly identify and draw each type of circuit. Students were also introduced to how the topic of series and parallel circuits could be asked in an exam style format.

What a term it has been in Music! The K 2 students have spent this term singing, playing and moving to a variety of music and have also been learning how to create their own rhythmic compositions. While in Years 3 to 6 the students have been training their ears through melodic and rhythmic dictation and have been honing their analytical skills by analysing recordings using the Concepts of Music. What better way to finish such a busy term than by enjoying some performance practice parties?
The students throughout the Primary School enjoyed sharing their musical talents this week by performing for one another on their instruments. The standard of performances this term was extremely high, with the students having recently prepared performance pieces for their studio recitals. This made for some very well prepared students and a thoroughly enjoyable end to the term. There were also a few lucky classes in Kindergarten and Year 4 who had the opportunity to attend a Year 11 performance class during their Music lesson. This gave the Year 11s the opportunity to perform to an audience but also showed the Primary School students where their continued dedication on their chosen instrument could lead.
The Music staff hope everyone enjoys a well earned break (including some practice of course) and we look forward to hearing everyone’s musical progress when we return in Term 4!

MUSIC
MUSIC PERFORMANCE
As we wrap up an incredibly busy term, we would like to thank all of our music teachers, students and families for their support. We held 25 studio recitals, providing over 700 students the opportunity to perform for their families and friends. In addition, we held the finals of our Reddam Idol competition, and many of our music students were also involved in the epic and extraordinary production of Disney's The Lion King JR. at NIDA this week! Please enjoy a well deserved holiday break, and we look forward to an equally exciting Term 4!
Spring Recital
Entries for submissions are now open for our Term 4 Spring Recital. If you have a chamber work, band performance or similar collaborative piece that is of a high standard that you'd like to include, please make a submission via the form linked here. We will endeavour to find alternate performances such as assemblies for those submissions that we do not manage to fit on the Spring Recital evening. https://forms.gle/S3HEScjkefxs4wBm7
Year 2 Orff Percussion Ensemble
The Year 2 Orff Percussion Ensemble students have had an exceptional term. Their understanding of pitch and duration (rhythm) is really developing well and their technique on the xylophones is getting better and better. After an outstanding performance at assembly a few weeks ago we decided to have a little fun and change up our repertoire. We took a little break from our regular Orff repertoire and are now learning the reggae classic ‘Stir it up’ by Bob Marley and the Wailers. The Year 2s have really been enjoying the challenge, especially learning to play the chords which utilise swung rhythms and are quite tricky to play! It’s been a great term and we are looking forward to our final term of Orff percussion for Year 2 in Term 4.

In Jewish Studies over the past few weeks the students in Year 1 and 2 have been making their own Rosh Hashanah machzors. Inside the booklet are the important symbols and deeds one does for Rosh Hashanah. The students in K 2 also decorated their own honey jars. All the students ate apples dipped in honey for a sweet New Year and listened to the shofar being blown.
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and it begins on Sunday night (25 September) and lasts for two days. The most important mitzvah on Rosh Hashanah is to hear the shofar being blown.
Wishing all our Jewish families a Shana Tova U’metukah. May you all be blessed with a healthy, happy and sweet New Year.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Congratulations to all Year 5 Public Speaking students for completing their unit on environmental speeches. The overall quality of the research and presentations to the class was extremely high, demonstrating the students’ interest and engagement with their topic. Students are also showing their awareness of the skills required to stand up front and keep an audience
