Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Any organisation which has people at its heart is a fascinating place to be. As if each individual isn’t complex enough, when placed together the combination becomes both challenging and fascinating. All the more so in a school, where the majority of people are young and still discovering just how complex life really is.
Youth also brings exuberance and wonder with it, so any challenges are exciting rather than daunting and each day’s events become a thrill rather than a chore. One of the greatest joys of being in a school environment is to see the young people who inhabit it growing in confidence and in their potential. They learn new skills and there is a sense of achievement each time they accomplish a significant task, score a goal or perform a piece of music.
However, undoubtedly the greatest blessing is to see the children developing their own unique personalities. Their opinions become more strident, their likes and dislikes increasingly set, and their relationships ever more meaningful. Some days we are amazed when we hear them speak or watch them interact with others, and we wonder “Where did that come from?”
As teachers and parents, we all hope for the best for our children. We trust that what they learn when they are young will stand them in good stead in the future, that they will develop friendships that bring them happiness and that they will show the kind of character that endears them to others.
This concept of ‘character’ is a tricky one to pin down, because we probably each have our own idea of what character is. I enjoy the simple, yet often quoted statement that “Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking.” This is what we hope for in all the students in the Primary School – that when they are away from the support structures of school and family they will ‘do the right thing’. Positive psychology proponents, such as Martin Seligman, have sought to highlight the role that character plays in developing our unique personalities. They remind us that such traits as kindness, bravery, humility, hope, gratitude, teamwork and other personal attributes all play a critical role in shaping who we are – and who we become.
As we all know from personal experience, our lives are being constantly shaped by the decisions we make, the interactions we have with others, and our attitudes to life. Each day the staff and I have the privilege of watching the lives of the young people under our care being shaped – and a special part of this is to see their empathy, caring, cheerfulness and depth of character shining through.

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, Michael Rodov and Lucia Zagora represented CIS at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships. This event combines the best primary school track and field athletes from across the state in a two-day event.
Michael represented CIS in the boys 8-10 1500m in the first event on Wednesday, finishing with a time of 5.23s which placed him 23rd overall in the state.
Lucia competed in the Girls 11 Shot Put and gave the competition a real shake, throwing a 10.26m to secure 4th place. This is another outstanding achievement, which puts her in the top 4 in NSW. On Thursday, Lucia competed in the Girls 11 Discus and had a great day out - throwing 6 PB's (personal bests) to finish in 6th position! Incredible performances across both days for Lucia, as she is now firmly in the Top 10 in NSW in both disciplines.
Well done to both students, as this is an outstanding achievement.
May you have a safe Diwali. May the divine light of Diwali fill your life with prosperity, peace and good health.

Kindergarten had a busy and exciting week settling back into the routines of the term. We enjoyed getting out in the sunshine when the rain gave us some respite, and our sport students enjoyed their very first swimming lessons – an exciting Kindy milestone!
In Mathematics, we spent the week expanding on our knowledge of grouping. In Term Three we learned how to make small collections of objects. This term, we are beginning to understand how to share a collection of objects into equal groups. We spent the week participating in lots of hands-on sharing and grouping activities, and then recorded our findings using our whiteboards.
As part of our Topic inquiry this week we continued our exploration of living things, investigating what they need to stay alive. We compared the needs of an animal and a plant, looking at the similarities and differences. We also began an experiment into how plants get the water that is essential to their survival. Stay tuned for the results next week!
During our English lessons this week the students were introduced to the first Show and Tell topic for the term, an investigation into an animal of their choosing. Students presented their research confidently and clearly, and impressed us with innovative, original, and eye-catching visual aids.

KINDERGARTEN
The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 22 Issue 31 Friday 21 October 2022 Page 9 KINDERGARTEN
In English we started our ‘Poetry’ unit of work. The students enjoyed listening to a range of poetry where structure and use of language to create an effective poem was our main focus. The students began to use the words, verse, line, and rhyme, when describing their favour parts of a poem.
In Maths we did a lot of investigative work. The students looked at real life objects and created mind maps based on what they noticed, for example - the box is a prism; the weight of it is 600g which is less than 1kg. The fact that maths is used in our daily lives and concepts can be interrelated is an important point to emphasise at this stage of their learning. We also focussed on identifying odd and even numbers and rounding to 10 which helps to enhance addition and subtraction skills.
In History, our ‘Food’ unit took us on a journey back in time. Having looked at photographs of homes from the past, the students began to realise how lucky they are to live in modern times where kitchens are high tech and food is varied. They were surprised to see that in the past, kitchens had little storage available for pots and pans, sinks were made from wood and were multifunctional and there was no electricity, which led to the question……. Where would ice cream be stored?
In Science and Geography, we delved into discussing food groups and where certain foods come from. Weetbix was voted a popular cereal for breakfast among the Year 1 students. We estimated that at least 10 people would be involved in getting the wheat from farm to plate or in this case … bowl!
In PDH we continued to explore the human body, identifying the skeletal system and organs. We carried out an experiment to see how well our blood pumps around the body, holding one hand up and one hand down by our sides. The blood travelled easily to the hand pointing downwards and NOT so easily to the one pointing upwards!
An interesting and busy week. Well done Year 1.

YEAR 1
Noah McQuarrie wrote this poem: Gazelle
Gazelle is sitting as quiet as can be, Then comes along a stinging bee! He runs away, he runs all day, And takes a break as his 4 legs ache.

YEAR 1
This week, Year 2 started their musical rehearsals. Each afternoon the main characters ran through different parts of the script. The students have been having a lot of fun with it and showing great confidence. The director, Mr Hattingh, has been adding extra fun parts to the script, we hear.
In History, the students learned about Port Arthur. Port Arthur is a significant site in Australia’s history because the hardest convicts were sent here from 1833. Now, Port Arthur is a tourist attraction. The students would love to explore the Prison Corridor to see inside the cells that the prisoners were kept in.
In Mathematics, we learned how to follow directions on a map. We had to turn the books around to follow the left and right turns. Miss McLauchlin told us about using the Street Directory when she was young. It is a bit different to using Google Maps! The students were also exposed to a variety of subtraction methods for 2-digit subtraction, including the use of vertical algorithms.
In English, we learned how to summarise a text and find the main idea. Our narrative learning continued. This week, the students learned how to write Sizzling Starts! This is when the beginning of their stories starts right in the action. They also recited poems to the class as part of their Speaking and Listening. We can’t wait to hear the rest next week.

YEAR 2
In Year 3, we are into our second week of the term and things are moving quickly. We are already getting ready for the exams. Revision books were handed out and we are slowly, or in some cases quickly, working through them. We are practising our study skills and flexing our brain muscles that extra little bit. We have revised mind-mapping, observation skills, maths skills, map skills grammar and language convention, reading skills and so much more.
At times we have found the activities are easy, while sometimes they have been a little more difficult. The great thing about these revision books is that they give us a chance to practise answering questions and are also a great summarising tool.
This is what some of the students have to say about the revision booklets:
I think the revision booklets are so much fun and I can learn a lot.
Addison Keen 3E
I think the revision booklets are fun and I learn a lot from them.
Jamie Betsis 3R
The revision booklet tests us in so many cool ways and I find them a lot of fun!
Capri Reynolds 3R
The booklets are very helpful and not hard at all.
Dylan Loughlin 3D
The booklets are helpful.
Angus Corbett 3D
The revision booklets are good and helpful because they help me with different strategies to learn the work and skills.

YEAR 3
In Year 4, we kicked off the beginning of Term 4 Mathematics learning how to calculate volume. The students built on their knowledge of shapes, which they gained at the end of Term 3, to identify that area is to 2D shapes as volume is to 3D objects. To consolidate this, Year 4 enjoyed making unique 3D shapes using cubic centimetres. Through this hands-on activity the students were able to draw the connection between the total number of cubes used and the recorded volume of each shape.
This week they extended their knowledge of volume and capacity through exploring the difference between the two. We measured a range of everyday containers, including juice bottles, cream containers, glassware, mugs, and cans using water and measuring jugs to record the capacity of each container. The students honed the specificity of their scalereading skills, challenging themselves to be as accurate as possible in their recording by noting the increments on the measuring jug. Insightfully, students were able to distinguish capacity as the amount that can be held within a container, which is often less than the outside dimensions, which are multiplied to identify the volume.
Fancy a cool, refreshing glass of Citron Presse? Here’s an opportunity to extend this learning at home and be rewarded with a refreshing glass of homemade lemonade at the same time! All you need is:
● 165mL (or ⅔ cups) of freshly squeezed lemon juice
● 1.25L (or 5 cups) of cold water
● 45mL (or 3 tablespoons) of agave syrup (or similar)
● Mint, lemon slices and ice for garnish.
Challenge your mathematicians by questioning how many mL are contained in a cup or a tablespoon? How many mL or L would the total recipe contain? How many mL would this be per person if shared with your whole family?
Let’s put those maths skills to use and enjoy the lemonade outcome!

YEAR 5 ENGLISH
Year 5
This week, Year 5 students continued to explore the themes and characters of the novel, 'The One and Only Ivan'. Students analysed how writers use literary devices and techniques to shape our understanding of their characters. Ov er the week, Year 5 students also composed compelling PETAL paragraphs exploring both the major and minor characters of the novel. In class, they also refined their understanding of various language conventions, allowing them to transfer these skills into their own writing.
This week, Year 5 displayed an exceptional level work ethic, completing both their Reading Comprehension and Writing Assessments tasks with great success. Students demonstrated a consolidated understanding of visual and literary techniques, and how these techniques create meaning in different text types. Year 5 students should be congratulated for their continued dedication to learning and self-improvement in English.
YEAR 6 ENGLISH
Year 6
Year 6 is thoroughly enjoying their film study for this term, 'Red Dog'. Through class discussions, Year 6 students have provided thoughtful and considerate insights exploring the film's themes of community, loyalty and friendship. Year 6 is deconstructing and examining how the director has communicated these themes through cinematic techniques. Students are using the PETAL structure to develop increasingly effective and engaging arguments with strong examples to support their opinions. Meanwhile, Year 6 is also honing their understanding and application of language conventions, resulting in increased writing and comprehension abilities.

YEAR 5 & 6 MATHEMATICS
Year 5s spent time this week investigating the nets of pyramids, prisms, the cone, and cylinder. They were challenged to draw, cut, and fold as many different nets of a cube as they could. Working collaboratively, they managed to identify and fold eleven different patterns. Furthermore, mathematicians differentiated between volume and surface area, the latter being measured in square units. After being provided with a range of cuboids, students were required to draw their nets and calculate their surface area. Students were also tasked with creating isometric drawing of irregular solids. With patience, scaffolding and some tips on technique, they produced almost identical copies of the originals. Moreover, they worked in groups to construct a 3D ‘star’(made of 7 cubes) and applied their knowledge and skill to find the number of vertices and edges observed in this solid.
Year 6 investigated the cross -sections of 3D solids. They determined that prisms and cylinders have uniform cross-sections, but pyramids and cones do not. They concluded that depending on the orientation of the plane that cuts the object there were 3 different cross sections, namely horizontal, vertical, and inclined. Furthermore, students worked together to find the surface area of a cylinder. Once students recognised that the cylinder consists of 2 flat circular surfaces and one rectangular area, the first step in the process began. They applied their prior knowledge and calculated the area of a circle. The real challenge was understanding that the unknown length of the rectangle was in fact the circumference. Using clever 2 in 1 geometric folding shapes that show both three dimensional solids and each respective net, students were able to make concrete connections between 3D as well as 2D concepts.

YEAR 5 & 6 SCIENCE
This week in Science, Year 5 students studied the seasons and phases of the moon. Students discovered how and why seasons occur and they also correctly identified seasons from Earth’s position to the Sun on exam-style diagrams. Students also explored the different phases of the moon. Students learnt why the moon looks like it changes shape, the order of the moon's phases and what we call the different shapes of the moon we see.
This week in Science, Year 6 students studied convection currents and Earth's atmosphere. Students in Year 6 discovered how convection currents in Earth's mantle contribute to earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and new land forming. Students also learnt about the different layers of the atmosphere. Students studied each layer and a variety of facts about each layer.
In Science Club, students investigated different acids and bases. Students were able to use red cabbage as an indicator to explore which ingredients were considered acids and which were bases. Once students identified their acids and bases, they were able to taste each ingredient to discover its unique tastes and textures. Proceeding from this, students mixed their ingredients together to make sherbet, this is when students discovered what happens when acids and bases are mixed together!

MUSIC PERFORMANCE
We have a number of special performances this term. Our music students may be interested in Monday evening's Elective Music Recital, where High School music students will be performing. In Week 4, students from across the school from K-12 will be performing at the Spring Recital. This is going to be a varied and enjoyable evening of student collaborative works, and we'd love to see you there in Adelaide Hall at 7pm on November 1. Next week, at Year 3-6 assembly, we hold our bands showcase! Talented musicians from the Rock Bands and Jazz Band will be performing for the school and their supporters.
Primary School Jazz Band
The Primary School Jazz Band has been making fantastic progress lately, working on ensemble playing and soloing skills. The band has added some new repertoire, such as the beautiful standard ‘Softly as in a Morning Sunrise’, which expands their harmonic and melodic vocabulary. It's been wonderful having so many committed students in the band this year, and they are very excited for their full term of performances, including both the Band Showcase assembly and the Spring Recital on November 1!

The Year 5-6 Drumline has swung back into action for the term. It has been great to have everyone back in the room as we head towards our performance at this term's assembly. We look forward to presenting our work to the school!

MUSIC
In their first ukulele lesson this week, Year 5 students were introduced to the instrument's origins, and learnt that it was from Hawaii, with a name that means 'jumping flea'. The students compared the ukulele to the guitar in an introductory task. They noticed that the ukulele is much smaller than a guitar, is higher pitched, and has 4 strings instead of 6 strings. Students learnt the names of the different parts of the ukulele, and how to read chord diagrams in order to play pop songs. This term, the main song they will learn is 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley, which requires the 3 chords C major, F major and G major. Students practised these 3 chords this week, and they began learning the sequence of chords in 'Three Little Birds'. All of the students were excited to learn a brand new instrument, and showed a lot of progress in just one lesson.
