Primary
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The Year K 2 students had a busy and productive week as they continued their rehearsals for Annie KIDS. It really has brought a buzz to their classes, and it is evident how excited they all are to be part of such a wonderful opportunity. There is undoubtedly still much to be done before they move into the theatre in just over a week, so we wish them, and all involved in the production, everything of the best for the final rehearsals and polishing of lines, lyrics and actions.
The Year 3 6 students have already put their heads down too as they start working through their Revision booklets in preparation for the final exams. At the same time, they are still learning plenty while working through the last sections of the syllabus.
There was a palpable sense of studious energy throughout the school during the week, and I commend all the students for their application and effort. In only a few weeks’ time we will be honouring them at the annual Prizegiving ceremonies, at which time all their dedication will definitely be worthwhile.
Speaking of hard work and effort, a recent article addressed what appears to be exactly the opposite, namely daydreaming. While most of us might regard daydreaming as purposeless and a distraction from the hard work which needs to be done, researchers in the United States have recently published a paper in which they point out that “daydreaming is not a waste of time. Rather, it helps children make meaning out of the experiences and information they encounter. It encourages creativity, improves memory function and supports problem solving.”
As they remind us, most people spend about a third of our day doing exactly that daydreaming. While some of those daydreams might only be a couple of seconds long, there are other occasions when we might find ourselves completely immersed in the daydream. So too do the students who attend classes each day, or sit at home working on their projects, essays, works of art and homework. In fact, the research, as published in a psychological journal, reveals that “those who reported more frequent daydreaming scored higher on tests to measure intellectual creativity.”
Of course, not all daydreaming is productive, especially when there is studying to be done or a new concept to be grasped in class. But the research is certainly a useful reminder that our children gain much from those seemingly unfocused, less purposeful moments in their lives than we might realise.

The Year 6 Music students also had an enriching experience yesterday as their excursion allowed them to immerse themselves in Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. This production, put on by students of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, in collaboration with the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), was a real treat for our students.
While on matters musical, next week sees the eagerly anticipated Spring Music Recital taking place on Tuesday. After the successes of the recitals last term, this should be the cherry on the top and we look forward to enjoying the musical talents of our students.
The week will end with the Year 5 Orientation Day on Sunday, along with the move to the theatre for the Annie KIDS production crew. I thank all those who will be involved in both events, as I know that they will involve plenty of hard work.
Have a happy weekend!

Annie rehearsals were in full swing in Kindergarten this week! It was so wonderful to see everyone embracing their inner performer and getting excited to be onstage for the first time. We can’t wait to show you all what we have been learning.
In PDH lessons this week we continued our Sun and Water Safety inquiry by looking at ways to keep safe at the beach. We talked about all the things we like to do at the beach, and then we made a list of dangerous things that we need to look out for when we are having fun. We explored ways to keep safe, like swimming between the flags, looking out for surfboards, rips, waves and rocks and how to signal to a lifeguard for help. We then recorded our learning by drawing a picture of ourselves swimming safely at the beach.
We completed the second phase of our experiment during our Topic lessons this week. We discovered that flowers ‘drink’ water through their roots! They take water in, and it travels up their stems to the leaves and flowers. Check out our blue, red and green flowers that helped us make this discovery.
In English and Mathematics this week we consolidated our learning across all areas. We continued working on our comprehension skills in English. In Mathematics we worked to build on our understanding of grouping and sharing.

KINDERGARTEN
The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 22 Issue 32 Friday 28 October 2022 Page 10 KINDERGARTEN
This week in Science in Year 1 we enjoyed exploring our food journey from farm to fork. Having studied dairy farming in Australia and the journey of milk we looked at other products that can be made. Yoghurt, ice cream and cheese were some of our students’ favourite! Obviously, our food comes from both plants and animals, so we also studied wheat production, which gives us many delights, including cakes, biscuits and pizza bases! The children explored two science experiments which involved bread and butter production, both of which illuminated how the materials can change their states.
We completed a yeast in a bottle experiment. The reaction caused our balloon to inflate in the same way which the bread would rise. We also got to shake, shake, shake our jam jars as we converted cream to butter. It took some serious bicep work but with some determination the old fashioned churning still gets the job done. The children definitely realise how fortunate we are to live in an age of technology that can help the farmers out. All that effort for a small amount of butter imagine milking all those cows!
Literacy saw us utilising our poetry focus to make spooky shaped poems in Halloween pumpkin formats. We had 'ghastly ghouls' and 'spooky skeletons' everywhere! It definitely prepped the children for our dress up day! It's wonderful seeing how creative the children are and how enthusiastic they become towards our writing focusses.
Maths led us to exploring many strategies for subtraction. We can now use the jump strategy on a number line. We can use a 100 square to easily move up and down in 10s, and we can use our place knowledge value to mentally manipulate too. The children enjoyed playing subtraction tug of war, sailboat races and fruit splat on our interactive maths games. The children enjoy using the interactive whiteboard and iPads to consolidate their learning.

YEAR 1
Year 2 students enjoyed learning all about living things in Science. We investigated the difference between ducks and swans and how some living things can be the same and different. The students completed a Venn diagram to show their findings. It is interesting to explore how living things grow and change and compare these. MRS GRENN helps us remember all the characteristics of living things.
Our spelling list this week focused on ‘oor’ and ‘ph’ words. We thought of as many as we could and listed those on our whiteboards, while reading them and using them in interesting sentences. Writing focus continued with the narrative genre, as we fine tuned our skills to write sizzling starts and use interesting adjectives, verbs and good grammar to construct well written pieces which engage our readers. Poetry recitals are entertaining our year group as each student presents their memorised poem, while trying to use expression and sometimes props!
In Mathematics we revisited using arrays for use in multiplication. Year 2 love playing times table games and trying their best. The children learned how to order small collections of coins and notes according to their value, to recognise parallel lines and identify those in our environment, as well as using formal units of measurement for recording length.
Port Arthur and its history were investigated in History and Geography. The students enjoyed learning about the different ways Port Arthur was used in the past and how this has shaped its history as an important site in Australia. In PDHPE we continue to learn ways to keep safe at home, at school and in other environments such as the beach, the farm and public areas.

YEAR 2
Again, it was another busy week in Year 3!
In English, the students continued to plan and write their own diary entries based on the short film, ‘A Mouse for Sale’. The film centres around a mouse in a pet shop, with rather large ears, who longs to have an owner. Many customers come and go, but the mouse is never bought, until one day he attracts the attention of a boy, who as it turns out, also has rather large ears! It’s a match made in heaven.
The students used their imagination to pretend that they were individual characters from the film, and they wrote diary entries based on how they believe these characters would think and feel.
In Mathematics, the students started their new topic on Mass. They eagerly hefted everyday items, trying to estimate their weight and then used scales to see how close their predictions were in reality. They also converted units of mass, such as grams and kilograms, to help demonstrate their knowledge of measurement and geometry.
Well done Year 3!

YEAR 3
The temperature is steadily rising as we enter deeper into spring, but that is nothing compared to the sizzling heat that our Year 4 students are bringing in our English lessons. Our Term 4 English topic is on writing persuasive texts and for the past weeks, we have been learning about what makes an intriguing introduction a Sizzling Start that captures the reader’s attention and doesn’t let it go.
One key factor is modality, where the strongest words, such as ‘must’, ‘absolutely’, and ‘unquestionably’, demand the reader’s compliance in seeing the issue from our perspective. This comes as a stark contrast to weaker words, like ‘I think’, ‘could’ and ‘might’, which present an option for the reader to side with us or not. The students soon realised that word choice is unequivocally a maker or breaker of a persuasive Sizzling Start.
Another cornerstone of the art of persuasion is inference. While directly stating your point of view on a topic is clear and concise, it is also incredibly boring.
“I believe that chocolate is better than ice cream.” Oh, excuse me! Did I doze off?
Inference allows the reader to deduce your opinion from the evidence and reasoning presented, while also allowing the writer to paint beautifully, enriched word pictures. Marry this to AFOREST persuasive devices, including Alliteration, Facts, Onomatopoeia, Rhetorical Questions, Emotive Language, Speech, and the (Rule of) Three, and you, my friend, like our sensational students, will have the reader eating out of your hand.
“Crunch, crunch, crunch! That’s not the sound you’d hear if you were eating ice cream. SLOP! Is that where you want your ice cream to end up? It’s a hot summer’s day and your chocolate bar is solid, safe and sound in your snack box. Not to mention, the World Health Organisation actually recommends eating a piece of dark chocolate a day to increase daily intake of antioxidants. This cannot be said for the freezing, frosty, frozen ‘treat’ that makes your brain fog! Give Cold Blob the boot and reach for a chocolate bar today.”

YEAR 4
ENGLISH
Year 5
This week, Year 5 finished up reading the delightful novel, “The One and Only Ivan”. They practised writing analytical PETAL paragraphs about how the author Katherine Applegate uses language to create her powerful and loveable characters. Analytical writing is a new skill for many Year 5 students, and the English department is proud of their progress. Students also revised their language conventions, in preparation for the end of year examinations. Well done on your hard work, Year 5.
Year 6
Year 6 English students began their week with their first writing assessment for the term. After watching the Australian film "Red Dog", students spent class time studying specific scenes in terms of cinematic devices and the way director Kriv Stenders uses them to explore themes such as companionship, belonging, love and loyalty. Students also practised their analytical writing using the colour coded PETAL system, and some brand new vocabulary for cinematic devices analysis. Well done, Year 6!
Year 5 Public Speaking
This week in Public Speaking, Year 5 orators began their assessment presentations. Working in pairs, and occasionally in groups of three, students prepared a “pitch” to convince Reddam’s imaginary film production company to fund the development of a fictional story into a feature film. We are enjoying the class presentations!

MATHEMATICS
When investigating volume this week, Year 6 discussed the commonly used units for volume. They recognised that although written as units cubed, when spoken, ‘cubed units’ is the correct reference. Students connected 3 dimesional objects with 2 dimensional representations and volume. They understood that unlike two dimensional shapes, three dimensional solids have height, which is the same as thickness or depth. Moreover, that all three dimensional figures occupy space, which is measured in terms of volume. To calculate the volume of prisms and cylinders Year 6s identified their cross sections which they then multiplied by the depth or height of the given solids.
Initially Year 5 mathematician calculated the volume of cuboids by counting cubes but soon found a shorter way by multiplying length, width, and height. They investigated the numerous ways in which they could make a cuboid with a volume of 48 cm3, using 48 x 1 cm3 cubes. Lessons became increasingly interesting when students identified the relationship between capacity and volume. They proved that the volume of liquid present in 1 millilitre of a liquid is equal to the volume of water that fits in a cubic centimetre. The week culminated in an experiment in which students used displacement to calculate the volume of everyday solids such stones, keys or marble, which, unlike cuboids, have no recognisable length breadth or height. Students inserted a variety of objects into graduated cylinders partially filled with water. The object’s volume displaced the liquid and raised the water level. The increase in capacity equated to the object’s volume in cubic centimetres.

SCIENCE
In Science this week, Year 5 students developed their knowledge surrounding solar eclipses, lunar eclipses and the life cycle of stars. Students are understanding the universe in more and more detail as the weeks progress. Students learnt the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse and more importantly how each eclipse occurs. Students also discovered how stars are formed and how they develop into black holes, supernovas and much more.
In Science this week, Year 6 students studied earthquakes. Students learnt about the different types of margins that cause earthquakes and a variety of facts about these margins such as their location, what happens at each margin and if the margin types cause volcanic eruptions or large earthquakes. Proceeding this, students identified the different parts of an earthquake such as the epicentre and focus. With this information students were tasked with running a rescue mission and justifying how and why they would deal with a variety of problems caused by earthquakes.
In Science Club, students carried out a dissection. A demonstration was conducted and then students made incisions on their own lamb’s heart and explored the different sections of this organ.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE
Congratulations to the talented Primary School students who bravely performed at our Battle of the Bands assembly this week! It was a joy to showcase these ensembles in a range of exciting music, and we are very proud of the work our rock bands and jazz band are doing with their superb teachers.
Spring Recital
Please join us for our final recital of the year, the Spring Recital, next Tuesday November 1 at 7pm in Adelaide Hall. This is shaping up to be a showcase of "Reddam in Concert", with many of our premium ensembles performing, including the Primary Jazz Band, Year 5 6 A Cappella, Piccolo String Quartet and String Orchestra. We will also feature talented students who have worked collaboratively with other students to prepare high quality performances of a range of works, with students all the way from Kindergarten to Year 12. We look forward to seeing you there!
Year 5-6 String Ensemble
The Year 5 6 String Ensemble has had a great start to the term, already advancing their ensemble playing by learning and rehearsing quartets arranged for String Orchestra by well known musician and composer Sheila M. Nelson. These quartets require sound understanding of the first position of each string instrument, stable intonation, excellent rhythmic skills, and great musical communication skills within the ensemble. Having worked on the first quartet Polka for only two rehearsals so far, they are already making great progress which is wonderful to see so early on in the term. The String Ensemble will continue with these quartets, as well as starting to explore the contrasting genre of Rock and Blues later on in the term. These new styles of playing will invite students to explore a completely different world of music, developing rhythmic skills, learning new extended techniques and advancing ensemble playing. Our aim by the end of the term is to have studied a variety of pieces from a number of different genres that help to improve confidence, ensemble playing, and of course to motivate and enthuse everyone for the new year ahead!
Year 3-4 Piano Duets
The Year 3 4 piano duets have done a terrific job in the many performances they have presented this year. It has been such a joy to watch the young duets grow in confidence in their piano playing and ensemble work. This week, we are delighted to present some of their recent work:

This week, the Year 4 students focussed on the song ‘Zumba Zumba’. It is a very rhythmic Spanish folk song that the students have really enjoyed learning to sing and play. In this week’s lessons they ensured that they knew the notes of both sections perfectly on the xylophone ahead of next week’s performance assessment task. In addition, they worked hard on their mallet technique. Using the proper technique not only means that they will be able to play the notes fluidly and with ease but also means that they will be getting the best sound out of the instrument that they can.
