aspects of acting, singing, dancing, costumes, sets and the multitude of other details is an enormous undertaking. I am always extremely grateful to the wonderful K 2 production team, namely Dean Hatthingh, Elli Bortolotti and Marcus Bortolotti. Special thanks to Juliet Mitchel and to the many class teachers, parents and other individuals who give up countless hours to ensure that the students are able to enjoy a memorable experience. Because it really is just that one which will live long in the memories of all those who were involved.
While the K 2 students were enjoying their time in the theatre, the older students in the Primary School were refining their exam writing skills in preparation for the end of year exams. The Year 3 6 students impressed their teachers with their hard work and focus as they spent most of the week going through what they had learned, while also ensuring that they put their study skills into action. Then, earlier today, they sat for their first exams, which by all accounts went smoothly. We wish all our students everything of the best for the remainder of the exams.
In last week’s newsletter, I reported on the exceptional successes of our Reddam House Year 5 and 6 Singers in the National Eisteddfod and in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod. In addition, we enjoyed the very special Spring Recital last week. And finally, we had the treat of Annie KIDS this week. So a recent article really resonated with me, as its title was ‘If you want your child to be more resilient, get them to join a choir, orchestra or band’.
The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 22 Issue 34 Friday 11 November 2022 Page 1
So often, we view cultural activities at school in quite a narrow way, focusing only on that particular musical piece, play, dance move or work of art. And yet, as this article reminds us, participating in cultural activities especially when they involve groups can have wider beneficial implications. One study looked at the impact of involvement in the Tasmanian Youth Orchestras and noted how “qualities like teamwork, empathy and grit all components of resilience can be developed through group music making.”
For a group of individuals to play a musical piece together, or as we saw this past week for a cast to put on a huge dramatic production, they have to work together. It means putting the group ahead of one’s own desires, all for the common good. It means persisting, even when others make mistakes. And ultimately it results in a growing resilience, grit and determination to see things through to the end.
This past week, Ruby Levitt received the very special news that her Great Barrier Reef painting was selected as a category winner in the 2022 Zart Art Student competition. The theme of this year’s competition was ‘My Environment’ and Ruby’s artwork was certainly a celebration of our unique and beautiful environment. Well done, Ruby!
Enjoy your weekend!

Reddam House Would like to congratulate the following students on their Principal and Principal Honour Awards.
We had a jam packed time rehearsing and performing this week in Kindergarten! We were so excited to be up on the stage and hope you all enjoyed our production of Annie. We are so proud of ourselves for all the hard work and dedication we put into our very first Reddam House production, and we hope that you are too!
We did manage to sneak in some academics this week as well. In English we introduced the ‘ng’ digraph and brainstormed words we know that include the ‘ng’ sound. We also put all of our new digraphs to work writing reflections of our Annie experience. We made a word web to summarise all the things we loved about the show and then wrote our reflections using conjunctions and remembering our full stops, capital letters and finger spaces.
During our Mathematics lessons this week we spent some time revising our understanding of subtraction. We practised counting on and counting back as well as our skip counting. We applied our subtracting knowledge to hands on activities and explored polygon puzzles for the first time.
In Topic this week we applied our knowledge of living things to reptiles. We learned lots of interesting facts about reptiles and what the need to survive means. We then wrote about what we had learned and completed illustrations to complement our writing.

KINDERGARTEN
The energy levels were at an all-time high this week. The highlight, of course, was the Annie Kids Production. The students basked in the opportunity to perform in front of their friends and families and did so with such maturity and pride!
Georgia Salib - “I looked for my family in the audience.” Jack Kogan - “The theatre was so cool.” Asher Macdonald - “I loved my colourful costume and makeup.”
Henry Stirk- “The songs were so catchy; it was brilliant fun.”
In Science lessons we got rather messy. We made different coloured slime as part of our combining materials inquiry and conducted a ‘magic milk’ experiment to observe a chemical reaction take place. The students had so much fun predicting, discussing, and recording the results.
In Maths we revised the concept of chance and the probability of situations occurring. We used well-known fairy tales as a starting point to one lesson. The students had to select images of objects that would, wouldn’t or might appear in the stories ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. The students said that they would certainly see a pumpkin and a glass slipper in ‘Cinderella’ but wouldn’t see a soccer ball or a cup of coffee.
1E performed their last class presentation for the year in the K-2 Assembly. The theme was FOOD. They shared information about how sourcing, preparing, and cooking food has changed over time, and they showed some artefacts from the past as well as a slideshow.
It was full of experiences from Term 4!

YEAR 1
Wow! What an action packed week for our Year 2 students. Their performance of Annie KIDS on Wednesday and Thursday night was full of life and character. Our lead characters were professional, engaging and it is hard to believe that it was their first experience in a Reddam House musical!
Our Year 2 ‘orphans’ were also very excited to perform on stage. Behind the scenes there were great things to see, as well. Staying quiet for a full 40 minutes included lots of self control, especially when nerves and anticipation were at play. The students used ‘five finger breathing’ to calm these feelings and concentrate on what they could hear happening on stage.
In the dressing rooms, the teachers and parent helpers were amazed to see the organisational skills of students who are very ready to head into Year 3. The children helped each other to ensure that costumes were on properly, makeup was applied and that belongings were kept in an orderly fashion.
During one rehearsal, the children were treated to a video of the Orff Ensemble group playing ‘It’s the Hard Knock Life’ on the xylophones. What a treat!
Big congratulations to all our thespians!

YEAR 2
This week, the Year 3s continued to show their love of learning by eagerly revising for their upcoming examinations. The students were diligent in remembering their revision folders each day to ensure that they could consolidate their work and prepare themselves fully in order to do their best. In class, we revised using both their revision booklets and practical activities. The Year 3s also discussed study tips and methods to help them retain the information that they had learnt throughout the semester.
Here is some advice from the Year 3s, who are ready for examination week.
Livy Villis: ‘Don’t stress and try to focus your mind on things that make you feel calm and relaxed.’
Kiran Reddy: ‘In each exam stay focussed and use your time wisely!’
Margarita Lyaschenko: ‘Make sure that you get plenty of sleep so that you can concentrate and your brain is at its best.’
Alastair Tait: ‘Read each question thoroughly and always go back over your work at the end to make sure you haven’t made any silly mistakes.’
Emma Radlovacki: ‘Use a revision method that suits you and that you enjoy doing so that you can prepare well. Revision should be fun to do.’
Ethan Murphy: ‘Try not to worry too much and just enjoy them.’
Sasha McNamara: ‘Make time to study each night but don’t over study. Remember to eat a healthy breakfast in the morning to get you ready for the day ahead.’
Shepherd Smart: ‘Always come prepared and ensure that you have everything that you need in your pencil case to do each exam.’
Vanessa Samuel: ‘Try your best and don’t rush. Remember to take your time and if you come across a question that you are unsure of, move past it and try it again at the end.’
Lawrence Chan: ‘Try to take some time for yourself and have a brain break. Play a game or go outside to get some fresh air.’
What brilliant advice, Year 3! You’ve all worked extremely hard, and your teachers are very proud of you! Well done!

YEAR 3
Revision Week was an invaluable experience for all the Year 4 students. Each day, students came to class ready to knuckle down and invest their energies in revising all the content from Term 3, along with the recently learnt content from Term 4. The students were enthusiastic, confident and eager to demonstrate all of their hard work. They spent their revision lessons clarifying any areas of uncertainty, whilst also refining and extending their knowledge of the core subjects. This led to great classroom discussions, supporting each student in their various subjects. Year 4 gave their all throughout the year and the Year 4 teachers wish them every success for the examination period!
In addition to the rigorous revision that took place this week, the students had the opportunity to enjoy all their specialist subjects, Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Sport, Computers, Languages, Media Arts… and of course, Public Speaking! During the last few lessons of Public Speaking, each student had the opportunity to perform their solo limerick to an attentive audience. Here are a few examples of their amazing efforts.

YEAR 4
Year 5 & 6 ENGLISH
Revision Week saw Year 5 and Year 6 English students refreshing and refining their understanding of English conventions, writing techniques and reading comprehension skills. Revision is an essential part of learning and preparing for examinations. It ensures that we feel confident and secure going into an exam, which reduces test anxiety a necessary step to sitting an exam well.
Year 5
Year 5 students were confident and ready to sit their Writing Exam today! They did an exceptional job interpreting the figurative and descriptive language techniques used in 'The One and Only Ivan'. The quality of their analysis of these techniques improved weekly. We English teachers are looking forward to reading what the Year 5 students will produce in their exams, as we are certain they will be strong and convincing. Year 5 also spent this week consolidating their understanding of language conventions and how to write clear and succinct answers for reading comprehension. Year 5, when completing your Reading Comprehension and Language Conventions Exams, remember the skills you have been taught to manage your time, and receive the full marks for each question.
Year 6
Year 6 did a phenomenal job this term, understanding and analysing the cinematic techniques of the film 'Red Dog'. Every week, we notice stronger and more confident writing pieces produced by our students. Year 6 should be very proud of their work ethic and drive to succeed this term. With the writing exam taking place today, the English department is looking forward to seeing how far Year 6 have come in their analytical writing abilities. In addition to writing revision, Year 6 also spent the week refining their understanding of language conventions and how to interpret and respond to questions in reading comprehension. Year 6 worked so hard this term, and this year. With their final examinations for primary school commencing, they should all be feeling elated and proud of how far they have come.
In the words of Norman Vincent Peale, "success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do." Year 5 and Year 6, you have definitely worked hard and persevered this year. Best of luck with the remainder of your examinations next week!
The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 22 Issue 34 Friday 11 November 2022 Page 16
YEAR 5 & 6 MATHEMATICS
In preparation for their examinations next week, the focus of lessons was to consolidate learnt concepts and make connections between prior knowledge and understanding. Students were provided with opportunities to ask questions and apply their knowledge. Mathematicians marked their revision booklets, which they have progressively worked through, enabling them to learn from their errors and further enhance their skills.
Furthermore, they reviewed questions in past cycle tests, assessments, and topic booklets, which served as excellent references to remind them of procedures and processes.
Exam techniques such as reading the questions carefully, and extracting keywords were emphasised. Additionally, students were reminded to manage their time well, to check their answers and to revisit questions they may have been unable to answer initially.
Year 5 and 6 are to be congratulated on their excellent work ethic leading up to examinations and are wished the absolute best!
MUSIC
It was a great week for the Year 3 and 4 Music students. After completing their xylophone pieces, ‘Sailing on the ocean’, (Year 3) and ‘Zumba zumba’ (Year 4), we began learning how to improvise over parts of each song.
The Year 3 students started by using a major pentatonic scale as their tone set. At first, they played a two bar phrase and then a four bar improvisation once the students were feeling more confident. In Year 4 the improvisations were slightly more complex. The students used two different tone sets to create two different four bar improvisations.
Our goal is to eventually use student improvisations to replace the B section of the song. This is a great introduction to creating your own melodies and composing. We are looking forward to seeing what the students can come up with when they become more familiar with the notes and scales for their improvising.

YEAR 5 & 6 SCIENCE
This week was Revision Week for all Year 5 and 6 students. Students worked hard to recap the semester's content in preparation for their Science exam next week. Students in Year 5 revised Newton's laws of motion, Hooke's law, the solar system and many more topics, whilst Year 6 students revised topics such as natural disasters, energy stores and circuits. Students worked extremely hard over the course of the semester and studied a lot of different topics and concepts. Good luck to all students taking their Science exam next week. I am sure their efforts will be rewarded.
In Science Club the young scientists made ice cream! This was done by using dry ice. Dry ice was crushed into a snow like consistency and then mixed with cream and flavouring. Due to the below zero temperature, freezing was instant! Students had to wait for the ice cream to warm up before they could eat it!

MUSIC PERFORMANCE
In our recent and final assemblies, we were able to feature a large number of students as part of their ensembles. Many staff and students worked hard to make these performances possible, and we are proud that so many groups were ready to perform at this point of the year; in recent weeks, this included the K 1 String Ensemble, Year 3 4 Piano Duets, Year 5 6 Piano Duets, K 1 Gumnuts Choir, Year 5 6 Synthesiser Ensemble, Year 3 4 Concert Band, Year 5 6 Drumline, Year 3 4 String Ensemble and Year 5 6 A Cappella.
Year 3-4 Piano Duets
The Year 3 4 piano duets did a terrific job in the many performances they presented this year. It was such a joy to watch the young duets grow in confidence in their piano playing and ensemble work. This week, we are delighted to present some of their recent work.

Year 3-4 Keyboard Extensions
The Year 3 4 Keyboard Extension Ensemble has been playing new and exciting repertoire this term. We have been learning the classic blues head Sonny Moon For Two, and the students have taken turns playing solos using the blues scale while the rest of the ensemble provides the accompaniment. There are also some keen singers in the group, and they have loved learning the skill of accompanying themselves as they sing the Bill Withers’ classic Ain't No Sunshine. The general chord theory, harmony, and song structure elements we are discussing and learning about are creating a good foundation for the students’ musical journeys.
Brass Ensemble
This year has been an exciting year for the Brass Ensemble. After our fantastic performance for the Anzac Day Assembly in April we worked extremely hard and have had the chance to perform a number of times already this half of the year. Brass Ensemble was the big opening for Ms Sims' Studio Recital with the exciting Sunrise Fanfare from “Also Sprach Zarathustra”, by Richard Strauss, most widely known as the theme from Stanley Kubrick's film, '2001: A Space Odyssey’. This is an exhilarating piece with rich harmony and dynamic effects that build suspense and anticipation for a climactic finish. Then we continued with my arrangement of “The Muppet Show” by Jim Henson. We played a couple more items throughout the Recital including “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin and we recruited some audience participation, getting their fingers snapping along with us for “Addams Family” by Vic Mizzy. The Brass Ensemble played the final item for the big finish to the show with all the students' favourite “A Little More Blues” by Brian West. I was extremely proud of their playing and the performance was enjoyed by all parents, family and friends at the Recital. We look forward to performing for everyone at these special occasions and have been working hard to perfect our selections of music for the performances.
I am very proud of all the hard work that the Brass Ensemble has done this year and look forward to another amazing year together in 2023.
