Artist: Broadcast Title: Berberian Sound Studio Overview
1.8.2013 WARPLP233 WARPCD233
“stylistically ambitious, morally radical, thematically complex work…deserves the highest praise” – TimeOut
Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio has emerged as one of the most critically acclaimed indie films of the year, The film’s sublime soundtrack, composed by Broadcast (aka Trish Keenan and James Cargill), before Trish’s untimely passing last year, sets a sinister and atmospheric tone that still exists well within Broadcast’s sonic universe.
Format: LP Boxlot: 15 Price: 19.99 Packaging: 1 x LP in printed
The film’s plot has clearly been one driving force behind the music, as has the work of pioneering Italian composers such as Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai. With woven in sound effects, screams and snatches of dialogue, this rare piece of film music not only enhances the visual, but exists on it’s own as an independent work that is an invaluable edition to Broadcast’s inimitable history.

JANUARY 8TH RELEASES WOODEN WAND ‘BLOOD OATHS OF THE NEW BLUES’ CAT NO:

Blood Oaths Of The New Blues is the Sunday morning 'wake and bake' record to last year's critically acclaimed Briarwood LP's Saturday night revelry. With his once-every-five-years proper rock and roll record out of his system, James Jackson Toth - AKA Wooden Wand - retreated back to Alabama to record this spooky, heady follow-up, an album that demands close attention. This is music for quiet reflection and shares a worldview more in line with noise and doom metal artists than it does summer of love casualties and beach burnouts. Every Wooden Wand album trounces expectations, and Blood Oaths Of The New Blues, thankfully, doesn't break that trend. Many of the musicians on Briarwood return here, making this the only solo Wooden Wand album to feature the same consecutive players and the first Wooden Wand solo album to be recorded in the same consecutive studio (Ol Elegante in Homewood, AL) as the previous album, somewhere along the line Wooden Wand became a BAND. David Hickox, Janet Elizabeth Simpson, Jody Nelson, Brad Davis and Les Nuby III make up the band, and it's a testament to their versatility to note that this same group who pulled off slow-burn rock epics like "Motel Stationery" and Stones-y, soulful jams like the cover of Jim Ford's classic "Big Mouth USA" last time around could so artfully and effortlessly create a follow-up that does not contain a single guitar solo, snare hit, or country affectation. Harmonium, organ and disembodied vocals are the order of the day here, with back-masking and subliminal messages added to enhance the trip. (We really didn't want to spoil that last part for you, but we at Fire Records have been advised by our legal staff to offer full disclosure on such matters to avoid any litigation resulting from misadventure. Sorry, James!). Like spiritual cousins Nico's Desertshore, Peter Hammil's A Black Box, or Dino Valente's s/t solo album, Blood Oaths Of The New Blues represents a break with the past with an eye on an uncertain future, and is the boldest, most adventurous and most intensely personal album of Toth's long career. The new focus on texture and sonic space does not, however, come at the expense of Toth's inimitable lyrical style. For proof, see the "alt couple" travelogue of "Outsider Blues," the menacing firsthand account of the real-life Doherty Gang's crime spree in "Southern Colorado Song," or the suicidal yearnings of the protagonist seeking to drown himself in "Supermoon (The Sounding Line)." Elsewhere, Toth evokes the weary spirits of state-executed men and women in "Dungeon Of Irons," pays tribute to one of his musical heroes in "Jhonn Balance," and even glimpses, for a moment, a sort of hope, via the sweet love song "No Debts." Warring factions on each side of Wooden Wand's generally eclectic fan base can finally call a cease fire - this is the first Wooden Wand album that should equally satisfy both the fans of Toth's acerbic rambler narratives as well as older fans who miss losing themselves in the fried, psychedelic atmospheres of albums like Buck Dharma and Harem Of the Sundrum & The Witness Figg. The album also features the best vocal performances of Toth's career. Toth has said that he set out to make an album like the kind he would listen to on headphones when he was 14 and discovering hallucinogens. "I still have trouble listening to King Diamond's Abigail LP," he says. When was the last time an album spooked you?
PERE UBU ‘LADY FROM SHANGHAI’ CAT NO:
2LP/FV290LP CD/FIRECD290 FORMAT: 2LP/CD PRICE: 2LP/$29.99 CD/$17.99 LABEL: Fire Records BARCODE: 2LP/809236129017 CD/809236129024 GENRE: Indie PACKAGING: 2LP/Standard CD/Digi
TRACKS : 1. Thanks 2. Free White 3. Feuksley Ma'am, The Hearing 4. Mandy 5. And Then Nothing Happened 6. Musicians Are Scum 7. Another One (Oh Maybellene) 8. The Road Trip Of Bipasha Ahmed 9. Lampshade Man 10. 414 Seconds 11. The Carpenter Sun
Smash the Hegemony of Dance. Stand still. Pere Ubu return with their first new studio album for over three years in January 2013, the thirty-fifth anniversary of the group's debut (The Modern Dance). Lady From Shanghai is to be released on new label Fire Records (home to Guided by Voices, Mission of Burma, Giant Sand, Bailterspace, Josephine Foster and many others). The album ushers in a new era in the history of Pere Ubu, with David Thomas and band continuing to provoke and shock listeners, further establishing them as one of the most innovative, progressive and important bands of all time. Lady from Shanghai is an album of dance music – it is the Ubu Dance Party. "The dancer is the puppet of the dance," says singer David Thomas. "It's long past time somebody puts an end to this abomination. Lady From Shanghai has fixed the problem. "What is the problem? Dance encourages the body to move without permission." An accompanying book 'Chinese Whispers: The Making of Lady From Shanghai' will be launched around the same time, extensively exploring the ideas and methods behind the recording. The Pere Ubu project was supposed to be an end, not a beginning. Assembled in August 1975 to be the Crosby Stills Nash & Young of the Cleveland music underground, the plan was to record one, maybe two singles and exist no more. Within months, however, those first self-produced records were being snapped up in London, Paris, Manchester, New York and Minneapolis. Pere Ubu was changing the face of rock music. Over the next 34 years they defined the art of cult; refined the voice of the outsider; and inspired the likes of Joy Division, Pixies, Husker Du, Henry Rollins, REM, Sisters of Mercy, Thomas Dolby, Bauhaus, Julian Cope and countless others. Pere Ubu make a music that is a disorienting mix of midwestern groove rock, "found" sound, analog synthesizers, falling-apart song structures and careening vocals. It is a mix that has mesmerized critics, musicians and fans for decades. Singer David Thomas named the band after the protagonist of Ubu Roi, a play by Frenchman Alfred Jarry. // Press quotes : “Yet by 1978 they had achieved what no other group would even attempt, before or since, they had become the world's only expressionist Rock‘n’Roll band, harnessing a range of rock and musique concrete elements together in a sound which drew its power from, and worked on, levels of consciousness previously untouched by popular music. The music Ubu made in 1978 was heart and soul, body and mind, in one.” Andy Gill – NME // “Ubu are generally regarded as the missing link between the Velvets and punk. From the beginning they obviously understood the nuts and bolts of popular music, and then loosened them.” Joe Cushley – Mojo // “They're the greatest out-rock 'n' roll group of this millennium, and probably the next.” Edwin Pouncey – The Wire //

RELEASE DATE: MARCH 29TH, 2011
THERE WERE SEVEN The Herbaliser are poised to release their first album in four years There Were Seven - through their own imprint Department H. There Were Seven, is The Herbaliser's seventh album of original material in the band's seventeen-year history. It is a return to their signature sound of gigantic hip hop beats combined with atmospheric orchestral elements but with a less familiar, psychedelic, amplified edge to it. The album is, for the most part, railing against a music industry machine that seems to churn out pop/dance/rap robots that only speak autotune, by the day. Not descending into retro but sounding oddly futuristic in places, the recording makes the point that we can move things forward without removing human beings from the equation. Having established a tradition of working with top-drawer vocal talents (MF Doom, Jean Grae, Roots Manuva, Rakaa Iriscience, Seaming To) the Herbs' present a stellar line-up on this release. First single, ”The Lost Boy" places Hannah Clive's haunting vocal amongst steely, descending guitars, eerie organ, and a whirring, oscillating, vintage Moog. Up-and-coming wordsmith, George the Poet, sets the world to rights on "A Sad State of Affairs". "Zero Hill" features Twin Peaks in a world where making music is illegal, over a beat that sounds like it was made on an old 'Speak and Spell' toy. The high energy spitting flute of "Take 'em On", the electro-funk of "Mother Dove", the scintillating dub of "Extravagance" and Teenburger cheerfully dispatching the living dead are just a few of the highlights of this engaging record. The overriding theme is Analog vs Digital. A dystopian future, the music industry, a computer learning to imitate the human voice, a tribute to Danny Glover, breaking rules for the sake of it, social isolation and even Zombie apocalypse are also thrown into the mix. All delivered with that mix of drama and wit that is The Herbaliser's stock-in-trade. Bio Universally hailed as a thrilling new figure in music for his edgy, lo-fi debut, The Headphone Masterpiece, back in 2002, Cody ChesnuTT is a soul troubadour whose frank, socially conscious ruminations on life continue to challenge popular notions of what modern soul music can look and sound like: a raw storyteller for the people wearing a guitar and a toothpick-chewing smirk; a wide-eyed, intense soul brother in a crazy-fly get-up singing about bedraggled love in the land of Lost Angeles - he’s all of that, but wiser now while still wearing poetic license on his skin like a battle scar. The Atlanta native has always stood his own creative ground ever since he first holed himself up in his bedroom to record The Headphone Masterpiece, armed with his DIY musical arsenal: a drum machine, an array of instruments, a dusty four-track cassette recorder and a giant pair of headphones to block out the world. The result was an unvarnished collection of songs – 36 in total, which alchemized his love of a multitude of styles: classic rock, rhythm and blues, pop, punk and gospel music. Formed in Winnipeg, Streetheart ascended the step ladder of success rapidly. Instantly successful the band’s style and performances were characterised by compelling songs, tough riffs and thought provoking lyrics. It didn’t hurt that they were fronted by Kenny Shields, one of Canada’s most celebrated vocalists and a man who poured every ounce of energy into his performances. Originally issued in 1980, ‘Drugstore Dancer’ was Streetheart’s fourth album and found them basking in the spotlight of success, brandishing a work of serious magnitude. Rockier and more focussed than their previous outing, the band’s switch from WEA to the Capitol label certainly paid dividends propelling the record to platinum status and securing their place in the Canadian rock and roll hall of fame.” STREETHEART ‘DANCING WITH DANGER’ CAT NO: FORMAT: PRICE: LABEL: BARCODE: GENRE: PACKAGING:

INV109LP LP $26.99 Invada 5024545653113 Indie Standard
"In the heady blue haze of 2007 a meeting of minds took place. Portishead curated ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas that year and amongst the artists they selected were the irrepressible Japanese band Boris and Bristol singer-songwriter Joe Volk. From seeing each other play that weekend, a friendship formed that lay the foundations for this Boris/Joe Volk release. A year after ATP, Joe was asked to support Boris at their headline show in London and by 2011 the split-release project was fully underway. Now, 5 years to the day of their first encounter, Invada are proud to present this collaboration which will be available only on a heavy vinyl pressing. Boris are well known for spanning multiple genres of music throughout their 20 year history. Supremely heavy. Always unexpected. His use of silence and hypnotic rhythms mark this out as something entirely different. This split album is a juxtaposition of styles from the same mindset. One story told two ways."

LAUREL HALO ‘SUNLIGHT ON THE FADED / DUB’ CAT NO: FORMAT: PRICE: LABEL: BARCODE: GENRE: PACKAGING:
HDB068 12 $10.99 Hyperdub 5055300368881 Dubstep Standard
TRACKS : A. Sunlight On The Faded B. Dub
Following on from her much-lauded debut album ‘Quarantine’ on Hyperdub released earlier in the year, Laurel Halo concludes both the year and the drama explored in ‘Quarantine’ with this new single 'Sunlight On The Faded'. Where ‘Quarantine’ was dense and beatless, layered and visceral with vocals cutting through intense soundscapes, 'Sunlight On The Faded' is energized and geometric, with lush chords built around hard, sparse drums and Laurel's harmonized vocals. The claustrophobic motifs explored on ‘Quarantine’ remain, but here they are turned inside out, incandescent and fleeting. Choked samples and illusory FX support the vocal phrases, the lyrics hinting at a resolution from the pain of the album’s themes, and a hopefulness too. The b-side dub is a deep exploration, again reflecting the soundscapes of ‘Quarantine’ but ramping up the intensity with simultaneously tense and lithe drum patterns. The chords of the original are broken by gaseous blooms, distortion detail work and rhythmic FX, allowing them to breathe and bounce in and out of the track, pivoting around a sinister, bassy dub techno pulse. Like the original take, the dub version is equal parts dark and positive, both ideal for late nights and early mornings.

8/10 NME UK. Gatefold CD With Booklet. Over the past four years, ex-Hefner man Darren Hayman has been releasing records about lidos, dogging and Russian space dogs. He has played gigs in libraries, observatories and remote Hebridean Islands. In all that time, however, Hayman’s real focus has been on this, a 20-song, double LP chronicling the 17th century Essex Witch Trials during the English Civil Wars. The record constitutes the third part of Darren’s Essex trilogy, the previous two albums, Pram Town and Essex Arms, dealing with the new towns and suburbs and the lawless countryside. “I have been drawn to my birthplace because it is both familiar and alien to me,” says Hayman. “Essex is so close to London yet so remote from it in many ways. I want to be both brutal and tender about the place in my songs.” “It’s easy to become trapped by your own tropes. I write easily about modernity and pepper my lyrics with slang, brand names and colloquialisms. I wanted to write about something in Essex’s past that spoke of its strangeness and also forced me to write in a language suitable for another period.” Between 1644 and 1646, approximately 300 women were executed for witchcraft in the eastern counties of Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. Matthew Hopkins was the self appointed Witch Finder General who travelled East Anglia and helped small communities to rid themselves of these lonely, widowed women. The album deals with fear and isolation, the way we use our own terror in times of trouble to lash out at the weak, and how societies persecute otherness and outsiders. The album also concerns itself with the wider context of the English Civil Wars. Hayman sings about King Charles I’s doomed love for his French bride; Parliamentarian spies; Puritan ideals and the comfort of animals. The album is epic in both concept and sound. The landscape of the Dedham Vale is bought alive by beautiful intricate woodwind scores, trembling strings and destroyed church organs. The Violence is an outstanding creative achievement, a truly unique and unprecedented album. “It’s about how violence frightens us and how fear just leads to greater violence,” says Hayman Tracklisting: 1 The Violence 2 Impossible Times 3 How Long Have You Been Frightened For? 4 We Are Not Evil 5 The She-Cavaliers 6 Elizabeth Clarke 7 Vinegar Tom 8 Parliament Joan 9 The Word and the Word Alone 10 I Will Hide Away 11 When the King Enjoys His Own Again 12 Henrietta Maria 13 A Dogge Called Boye 14 Outsiders 15 Arthur Wilson’s Reverie 16 Rebecca West 17 Desire Lines 18 Kill the King 19 A Coffin for King Charles, a Crown for Cromwell and a Pit for the People 20 The Laughing Tree

JOSH RITTER JOY TO YOU BABY Limited edition, hand numbered, coke bottle clear 7” vinyl Out Dec 18, 2012 From THE BEAST IN ITS TRACKS (out March 5, 2013) Josh Ritter JOY TO YOU BABY is the first single from The Beast in Its Tracks, Ritter’s first studio album in almost three years. The JOY TO YOU BABY 7” includes an exclusive B-side: I GOT MY OWN WAY. This track will NOT be available digitally, it won’t be part of the deluxe full-length LP, etc. The 7” will be “coke bottle” clear in color, and each 7” will be hand numbered. The 7” run is limited to 1000 units WORLDWIDE. During the week of Dec 11, World Cafe will broadcast Ritter’s solo acoustic performance of JOY TO YOU BABY. It will be syndicated nationally. When the album is released in March, there will be another national broadcast for the entire album. The Beast in Its Tracks may well be remembered as Ritter’s divorce record, as it was written and recorded in the wake of his 18-month marriage suddenly dissolving. As Josh says, “In the year after my marriage ended, I realized that I had more new songs than I’d ever had at one time. Far from the grand, sweeping feel of the songs on So Runs the World Away, these new songs felt like rocks in the shoe, hard little nuggets of whatever they were, be it spite, remorse, or happiness. I hadn’t composed this stuff, I’d scrawled it down, just trying to keep ahead of the heartbreak. They needed to be recorded like that. We needed to work fast, make decisions quickly, keep the songs as spare as they could be kept, and above all never allow ourselves to blunt the sharp edges.” As is always the case, Josh will tour heavily after the March 5 release of the album, during the months of March, April, May. Tour markets currently include: Dallas (3/13) Austin (3/14-15) Santa Fe (3/16) San Diego (3/18) LA (3/19) SF (3/20) Portland (3/21) Vancouver (3/22) Seattle (3/23) Spokane (3/25) Denver (3/27) Cincinnati (4/14) Cleveland (4/15) Toronto (4/16) Detroit (4/17) Indianapolis (4/18) Louisville (4/19) St. Louis (4/20) Lawrence, KS (4/22) Milwaukee (4/23) Madison (4/24) Minneapolis (4/25) Chicago (4/27) Portland, ME (5/8) New Haven (5/9) York, PA (5/10) Richmond (5/11) Asheville (5/13) Atlanta (5/14) Carrboro (5/15) Philly (5/16) NYC (5/18) Washington D.C. When punk's implosion offered British musicians a chance to once again draw on earlier eras for inspiration, one of those who took full advantage was Gerard Langley, the frontman of Bristol's free-floating collective Blue Aeroplanes. Using reference points that include prime Gang of Four ("Rare Flowers") and early R.E.M. ("Arrival"), the players take the pressure off Langley's poetry; he even sings on "When the Wave Comes," a pop-leaning treat. Though not as fully realized as later Aeroplanes outings, the ambitious Tolerance isn't overwhelmed by its own artiness, either - no small feat.

King Midas Sound released their enthralling debut album ‘Waiting For You’ in the fading light of November 2009. A hypermodern nocturnal take on Lovers Rock, featuring delicate but sour electronic instrumentals topped with Roger Robinson's bitter -sweet falsetto and Kiki Hitomi’s fragile voice, it highlighted a hitherto less-exposed side not just of producer Kevin Martin’s musical evolution, but that Hyperdub’s too.

Unreleased until now. Probably Siobhan Fahey’s darkest work to date, the album has been digitally remastered with 3 bonus tracks. Siobhan teamed up with Sophie Muller in 1993, to write and produce this collection of tracks with the hope that a character and story would emerge for a possible film project. This album is the result of those collaborations. For the first time, this album gets a worldwide release and full digital remastering that brings new life to the tracks.

DECEMBER 11TH RELEASES FAIRHORNS ‘DOKI DOKI RUN’ CAT NO: FORMAT: PRICE: LABEL: BARCODE: GENRE: PACKAGING:
INV108CD CD $17.99 Invada 5024545652727 Electronic Digi
What is Fairhorns? Fairhorns is the sound of the dirty future to come. More prosaically - but not by much - Fairhorns is Bristol based multi-instrumentalist Matt Loveridge, best known for his role as guitar abuser and keyboard/synth manipulator in acclaimed experimental rock trio Beak> alongside Billy Fuller (Fuzz Against Junk) and Geoff Barrow (Portishead, Quakers). You may also know Matt as Team Brick, whose 2009 debut album Alogon was greeted with considerable praise. Prior to that, Team Brick had garnered a reputation for unpredictable, exciting and often confrontational live shows, suggesting a British-born hybrid of R Stevie Moore, C Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) and Mike Patton. After a number of years of getting thoroughly puzzled with itself - and self-releasing a succession of limited-run CDRs covering ground from chiptune pop to heavy drone and Power Radiophonics - Team Brick splintered into several different projects, each one focusing on a separate element. Thus, Fairhorns was born. Released via forward-thinking UK label Invada, DOKI DOKI RUN is the project’s debut album. Matt describes Fairhorns as “the fuzzed out, too-much-coffee haze of an all-night YouTube binge. Blackened Kraut. Ur-Step. Half-remembered kids TV theme tunes on a locked groove. Autistic blues - music for angry nerds who like to groove stoically and immobile.” The discerning listener may detect elements reminiscent of Hospital-era Cold Cave, Xeno & Oaklander, La Dusseldorf and even avant-doom pranksters Crom in the album’s quixotic flow, ranging from clattering electro-percussive assault to organ-led dreamscape. “Baffling , startling , Doki Doki Run is an eccentric gem that rewards and encourages careful listening” – 9/10 Loud & Quiet
OSSIE ‘IGNORE EP’ CAT NO: FORMAT: PRICE: LABEL: BARCODE: GENRE: PACKAGING:
HDB067 12 $10.99 Hyperdub 5055300368775 Dubstep Standard
TRACKS : A. Ignore B. Find It
After last years Hyperdub debut with the popular 'Set The Tone' EP, Ossie's been busy building a name for himself, as a DJ and a producer with both Ossie and Black Orange Juice releases. He comes back to Hyperdub here with the 'Ignore EP', sporting two catchy, housey, broken beat bombs. 'Ignore' features the vocals of Tilz, singing about the game of winding up the opposite sex, over bouncy, broken drums, neat stabs, and a bendy acidic bassline, with wave-like chords building up and down as if in reflection of the cat and mouse antics of the lyrics. 'Find It' on the B-side makes good with layering some roughly cut up female vocal samples, Todd Edwards-style, but twisted and dubbed into strange shapes, incorporating sloppy, dusty drums and a bassline that sounds like Wiley's early eski beat melodies, keeping the track rolling along and sounding mischievous and chunky.
DVA ‘FLY JUICE EP’ CAT NO: FORMAT: PRICE: LABEL: BARCODE: GENRE: PACKAGING:
HDB066 2X12” $22.99 Hyperdub 5055300368706 Dubstep tandard
TRACKS : A. Fly Juice B. Do It C. Walk It Out D. Lng Street
DVA started off Hyperdub’s barrage of albums in 2012 with his brilliant ‘Pretty Ugly', and now closes the the year with the ‘Fly Juice’ EP’s bumper selection of machine tooled tracks, each created for optimum dancefloor damage and road tested by DVA, Kode9 and a select bunch of DJs. These tracks (four on the double-pack vinyl, with four extra on the digital version) are a brilliant example of what he’s been describing as “power house” for a while, a colourful chunky techno sound that switches up every 8 bars like grime and has plenty of shuffle and offbeat swing as a counterpoint to the 4/4 drums. ‘Fly Juice’ opens with sweet jazz funk Rhodes before dropping into weightless bouncey chopped vocals and stuttering drums building through 8 bar patterns - with the Rhodes as a sweetner, it’s bliss! ‘Do It’ runs a stuttering voice, a huge deep bassline and relentless building stabs against shuffling drums. On 'Walk it Out’, the repetition of the title over a pummelling two note melody is positively dumb, but pitched against swirling effects and whooshing chords the effect is epic. 'Long Street' features a collaboration with South African producer Big Space, and echoes the sound of early UK bleep and bass with a stern melody, breaking down into swirling Detroit-like chords, while shuffling along on a crisp, scissoring rhythm. After the sweet and sour songfulness of his album 'Pretty Ugly', the ‘Fly Juice’ EP shows DVA returning to his dancefloor roots. As an amazing DJ/producer, you can expect more of this in 2013.
