6. One False Move ("Great Day’” demo instrumental)
In 2002, the first demo sequence of Madvillainy leaked online. The tracks contained early vocal cuts from MF DOOM, recorded and quickly mixed in Los Angeles at Madlib's Bomb Shelter studio. The demos may have been unfinished, but fans understood that this was a hip-hop album unlike any other.
DOOM rerecorded vocals – alluding to the leak on “Rhinestone Cowboy” – and Madlib added new beats and changed up the sequence. Leaks could kill an album’s momentum in the early 2000s, but the demos only whetted fans' appetites; when Madvillainy came out in 2004 it was "one of the most anticipated releases in underground rap history," according to Pitchfork. Madvillainy is now regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

BIG THIEF
The trails that Brooklyn’s Big Thief -- Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) -- take us down on 2017’s Capacity, the band’s highly critically acclaimed sophomore album, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls.
After 2016’s stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Lenker’s songs introduce us to a gallery of multifaceted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity — at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable. Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who is going to take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own.
The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the rest time in the studio and were recorded the same day. “There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” Lenker explains. “The songs search for a deeper level of selfacceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside.”

Forever was a record that was written and recorded one track at a time with my husband Coley. After scrapping about 20 songs or so I had written the last few years, I wanted to get to the heart of things. I had a great talk with a friend on the phone and she mentioned she just wasn’t sure where I’d been. I realized I wasn’t really certain of that either. It’d been a foggy few years after 2020, and the pieces seemed to just be starting to be picked up. I had fallen in love, gotten married, had a dog, a house…things I had always dreamed of. But it took me quite some time to accept them as my life. For a bit, I felt like an outsider watching myself stumble though everything, and was constantly critiquing myself, to the point where I could hardly leave the house for a bit. But then I realized my life was passing me by, and the love I was living in required presence to accept. I started to do the little things you have to do to just show up for people: listen, grow, change, write….get outside of my own problems. Time is flying, and I want to be here for it all rather than lost in my thoughts all the time. My love is forever. When I was a kid I used to say to my mom and dad “I love you forever and always” then neurotically changed it to “I love you forever and always and it’s true and I mean it”… because I wanted to make sure they knew how much I wasn’t messing around! I still feel that way when I say “I love you” to anyone and hope it comes across on this record. Love y’all forever! - Lilly

Real Gone Music continues to barnstorm through the Buckcherry album catalog with a special expanded edition of the band’s third album, 15. Singer Josh Todd and guitarist Keith Nelson emerged from a four-year hiatus in 2005 with a new line-up and a killer set of songs that included three big hits in “Crazy Bitch,” “Next 2 You, and “Sorry.” In fact, 15 (named after the number of days it took to record it) stayed in the Billboard charts for a full 98 weeks, and was the first Buckcherry album to hit the Top 40…so, for its 20th anniversary, the band have brought us—and you—something truly special. Not only does this release mark the vinyl debut of 15, but they’ve added an entire disc of bonus material highlighted by acoustic versions of “Crazy Bitch” and “Sorry” and their supercharged version of Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up.” All pressed in a 2-LP set of metallic marble vinyl…easily one of the best hard rock albums of the ‘oughts, finally on LP, and limited to 1500 copies!

Elmore James is known as the “King of the Slide Guitar.” He was inspired by the local performances of Robert Johnson, whose “Dust My Broom” became James’ signature song and laid the foundation for his recording career. First cut by James in August 1951, “Dust My Broom” contains the strongest example of his stylistic signature: a swooping, full-octave opening figure on slide guitar. He has been credited with practically inventing blues rock by energizing primal riffs with a raw, driving intensity. James left behind a raft of classic blues songs that influenced a legion of Chicago slide players, and his songs have been cut by the likes of the Allman Brothers Band, Canned Heat, Fleetwood Mac and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. “You can hear his signature riff at least once a night from every slide guitarist working,” music historian Tony Glover has written.

Deluxe 2xLP clothbound sleeve edition of ‘Car Button Cloth’, featuring Lemonheads classics ‘If I Could Talk I’d Tell You’ and ‘The Outdoor Type’. This reissue includes the original record alongside a whole extra LP of rarities and unreleased cuts, continuing Fire Records’ in-depth series of reissues from the legendary band.
‘Car Button Cloth' is an extraordinary affair of musical and emotional extremes, a soundscape spanning “the most beautiful piano-led mourning in the history of the broken heart” that switches into perky jangle-pop for fleeting moments and contains the ultimate selfdeprecating classic ‘The Outdoor Type’, penned by Smudge cohort Tom Morgan, as well as a cover of the bluegrass standard ‘Knoxville Girl’ and ‘If I Could Talk I’d Tell You’ co-written with The Vaselines’ Eugene Kelly. All bases are covered.
“One of the most distinctive voices of the ‘90s” The New York Times
To further unravel where Evan’s head was at during the period of its creation, this deluxe double album comes with a record of exquisite and typically eclectic scene setting covers that occupied B-sides and alternative format versions, plus other super rare offcuts, live takes and remixes. A diet of Volcano Suns, Glen Campbell, The Jacobites, The Sir Douglas Quintet and Whitney Houston influenced Evan’s thinking and added further colour to an album that remains something of a Dorian Gray-style masterpiece. The first side of extras is rounded off with the never before released ‘Arise’, originally set for the remake of Great Expectations and later realised as Rancho Santa Fe on solo album ‘Baby I’m Bored’

WORTHINGTON: HE WAS NOT A MICROMANAGER
(REMIXED/REMASTERED 2020)
- Recorded at Jackpot! Studios Portland, OR by Larry Crane 1998 - Remixed at Jackpot! Studios Portland, OR by Larry Crane 2020 - Remastered at Telegraph Mastering Portland, OR by Adam Gonsalves 2020
Rather than a chance encounter or through ads in the local paper Worthington was formed by a group of long standing childhood friends who’s relationship predated the band and endures decades later. Formed in Walla Walla, WA in the early 1990s Worthington was the musical outlet of a group of friends who shared an obsession with the brilliance of The Byrds jangling riffs mixed with the post punk and hyper melodic new wave that they grew up on. Worthington immediately won accolades for their ability to sew soaring melodic soundscapes with crashing dissonant features that marry candy pop and experimental noise rock. The culmination of their work was the masterful “He Was Not a Micromanager” on Portland’s Special Music Label. “Micromanager” garnered rave reviews in the local Portland, OR press and international publications, including a 9/10 rating by NME.
Worthington’s record is about to mark it’s 22nd anniversary and may in fact be more timely now than ever. Songwriter Jake Stebner’s hooks are as sharp as ever and singer Kurt Foster's baritone lends a uniqueness that immediately separates this band from the pack.
Mark Cohen, Special Music
"Worthington has crafted quite a serious piece of work here. There are no criticisms to be leveled, no advice or admonishments to be dispensed. This is simply a great album..." Two Louies 1998
"A big-hearted slab of prime Americana, Worthington are equal parts early REM, mid period Uncle Tupelo (when both bands were still bourbon-stained shitkickers) and a deliciously wiry melodicism all their own. There's a stoical pride, a quietly brusque tenderness to Kurt Foster's vocals and 'Smaller Monsters' is a chilled classic, perfect dusk music recalling The Band’s second LP, while closing track ' In Pink And Blue Lobby Schemes For You' is breathtakingly desolate..." NME 1998
"It was 1998. My studio, Jackpot! Recording, had been open for almost a year. A band had booked a handful of days to make an album, and we started January 10, knocking down all the basics (and probably most of the overdubs!) over the weekend. I don’t know when we mixed the album, but I remember being on a high as I had finished recording Quasi’s soon-to-be breakthrough “Featuring Birds” album the previous month; a record that forced me to go into some sonic directions I might not have previously considered. When I originally mixed ...Micromanager, I went for it. It’s rough, and raw, and some sounds were distorted in ways that I cannot recall how I even achieved the results! Along the way, I became pretty friendly with these goofy guys, and some 20+ years later they asked me to remix the album as someone (probably Omar, right?) lost the master DAT tape. If you have the original album on CD, yes, this is different. I tried to mix it like some group had just sent me a new album to mix in this current time. When I’d reference against the old CD mixes, I’d sometimes be shocked at how different they sounded. It was time for a new presentation! On one song, sadly entitled “Bedwetters...,” somehow the original vocal had even been erased (How? No idea.), requiring Kurt to return and sing it again (in one take). It was all a crazy trip down memory lane for me, as I recall a headstrong young self gaining speed and confidence. Little could I have imagined 20 years later I’d be revisiting anything I’d recorded. But it sure was fun!" - Larry Crane, www.jackpotrecording.com

Self-released avant garde jazz – reissued for the first time! Recalling Kraftwerk precursor, the Organisation, or contemporaries like Faust, Hünerberg employs flute, organ, bass and balloon to his DIY compositions.
Over top of Gillespie's nimble, pointillist drumming (he also plays piano and harpsichord), Hünerberg employs flute, organ, bass and balloon (that’s not a saxophone on “Cucumber”). The disorienting opener “Cro Magnon/Two” recalls Kraftwerk precursor the Organisation, or contemporaries like Faust. There’s a strange, disconsolate atmosphere to the proceedings, almost as if the air had been sucked out of a recording session booked for some avant-garde jazz heavies.
Instead of Impulse, Phase Murmur should have been bound for ESP-Disk. Alas, the duo were experimenting out in the relative vacuum of southwestern Ohio. Far from any bustling metropolis or curious record labels, Phase Murmur was truly a DIY affair. Not only did the duo press the LP up themselves (down the road at Cincinnati's Rite Record Productions), but the evocative and mysterious photo on the cover is by Gillespie while the layout, with accompanying poem on the back, was assembled by Hünerberg.
It was on Phase Murmur where Hünerberg first found his voice, and the rest is the sound of history, unspooling on a reel-to-reel tape machine.

It all began with a bath. As Tele Novella’s Natalie Ribbons ran the water and listened to a guided meditation, she never anticipated arriving on the other side with an idea for an album, Poet’s Tooth. “I ended up sitting in that bath and going on quite a visualization journey,” says Ribbons, who resides in Lockhart, Texas, and performs in Tele Novella with Jason Chronis. “The images and feelings that came over me that night made me feel like I had a power that I had been ignoring and taking for granted for years. It was sad and happy at the same time,” Ribbons continues.
As Tele Novella, Chronis (who performs in the beloved and rekindled indie pop band Voxtrot) and Ribbons (who previously performed in the long-running “Victorian punk” project Agent Ribbons) have spent their past two albums creating "Medieval outsider country" on 2016’s House Of Souls and 2021’s Merlynn Belle. Poet’s Tooth – the band’s second album for Kill Rock Stars – steers the duo’s whimsical western-tinted quality into fascinating new directions: cinematic-pop balladry on the autoharp-tinged opener “Young & Free,” gently clip-clopping Americana-folk on “Hard-Hearted Way,” and bass-driven funk on the wry “Eggs In One Basket.” With help from producer Danny Reisch, Tele Novella have crafted their most genre-rich, poetic, and sincere album yet.

TL; DR: One of the freshest young pop bands spikes their paisley jangle with gothic moods and the result is 100% captivating.
RIYL: early REM, The Bats, The Chills, The Ocean Blue, The Rain Parade
Box Lot: 20
On their spellbinding sophomore album, Whispers in the Speech Machine, the young Ohio siblings from The Laughing Chimes fully embrace their Southern Gothic influences, cannily balancing the light of their infectious pop with the shadow of their rust belt environs. While attending an afterschool music program at their local opera house, Evan and his brother Quinn began recording The Laughing Chimes' debut album "In This Town," released in 2020. A string of well-received digital singles and a cassette EP for Slumberland followed, dazzling savvy pop fans with their Paisley Underground-inflected jangle that owes as much to the Flying Nun sound as it does to 80s Athens, GA.
The eight assured songs of "Whispers in the Speech Machine" prove The Laughing Chimes deserve the attention and accolades, while their approaches to songwriting and sonic aesthetics continue to evolve. "Southeast Ohio is the foothills of Appalachia, so it has this indescribable mood and atmosphere to it," guitarist/vocalist Evan Seurkamp told The Big Takeover. "Sometimes there's a haunting weight of decay you want to escape, but at the same time there is some sort of strange romanticism surrounding ghost towns. We've tried to channel those moods to add more regional flavor into our sound."

Sarah Belle Reid and Vinny Golia Accidental Ornithology
Accidental Ornithology is a collection of 14 improvisations from multi-instrumentalists Sarah Belle Reid (trumpet, electronics) and Vinny Golia (woodwinds), inspired by the fascinating quirks & cries of imaginary birds. This electroacoustic album is a collection of bizarre and spontaneous conversations between quarter-tone contrabass flute, piccolo, clarinet, trumpet, quarter-tone flugelhorn, modular synthesizer, and interactive electronics in MaxMSP—an ever-changing sound world that is at once alarming, delicate, woozy, incessant, and playful.

A supergroup of sorts - Fat White Family’s Lias Saoudi, Trashmouth Records’ Luke and Liam May, and Quinn Whalley of Paranoid London and Warmduscher - Decius have travelled the earth liberating people from banality since the release of Decius Vol. I. They’ve revealed to all those they’ve encountered just what was missing in their lives: pump without borders, pump without reasonabsolute pump.
Decius live sets at Berghain’s 19th birthday celebrations, Block 9’s NYC Downlow at Glastonbury and Opium Club in Vilnius have set pulses racing, and they count the likes of Dixon, 2manydjs, Honey Dijon, Mochakk, Or:La, Iggy Pop and Depeche Mode as fans.
Now they offer up Decius Vol. II (Splendour & Obedience). It throbs with an almost impossible sense of potential, and expands on the lexicon of molten desire. The sound has moved into new territories, with tastes of house, disco and techno, all with an underlying base note of acid on tracks such as the slippery night cruise intensity of ‘Birth of A Smirk’, where Colonel Abrams gets his nipples tortured. ‘Queen of 14th St’ is all watersports and Cybotron force from Detroit via Deptford. First single ‘Walking In The Heat’ struts like a sunburnt and horny Kraftwerk, while ‘Ghent’ is purest uncut ’88 acid. Vol. II is the art of seduction in damp rooms painted black. The Hornbook
magically transmutes the entire history of 20th-century rock ‘n’ roll — ’50s golden oldies, ’60s garage spunk, ’70s glam flamboyance, ’80s indie transgression, ’90s lo-fi weirdness — into an alien transmission from the future. Now, if you stayed awake during high-school history class, you might remember that a hornbook is an earlyeducation tool for children dating back to the 15thcentury — a wooden paddle inscribed with the alphabet, numbers, and the odd Bible verse. (Think of it as the beta version of your iPhone’s notes app.)
“When I was writing these songs, it felt like I was making a children's book — every song was a little story,” Englehorn says of the title concept. “But it also felt like a little bit of a cipher for our whole world.”
The album was largely written in Maui but recorded in Montreal with producer Grammy-award winner, Mark Lawson, whose C.V. includes one of Englehorn’s personal touchstones: Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?, the gloriously ramshackle 2003 debut album from Montreal cult heroes The Unicorns “The Unicorns are a huge influence,” Englehorn enthuses, and certainly you can hear a similar childlike sensibility on The Hornbook , from the Dr. Seussian wordplay in his songs, to the ever-present mischievous glee in his singing voice, to the sandbox experimental approach he shares with his musical (and matrimonial) partner, drummer Estée Preda.

THEKINGOFTHE SPOOKWORKERS
BY RICHARD EDWARDS
Texas Girl At The Funeral Of Her Father
After vowing to stop making albums following Ghost/Electricity Vampire Draw (2022), Richard Edwards returns with The King of the Spook Workers, a covers album he describes as his personal journal through the American Songbook. Recorded in just four days, the album reimagines songs from Chappell Roan, Joe Tex, Gillian Welch, Britney Spears, and others, united by Edwards’s delicate vocals and Dave Palmer’s haunting piano. With a strain of late-night loneliness and an unforced sincerity, Edwards traces a surprising musical lineage, reminding us that beautiful melodies can be found anywhere.

In November 2023, a year after Ghost Electricity/Vampire Draw!, Richard Edwards declared that “all recordings of note” would now belong to the Contrabandist series, a trilogy of rare tracks from his solo vault spanning 2015–2023. The first release, Contrabandist Vol. 1, is as rare as the recordings it includes, blending incomplete demos, live bootlegs, and studio tracks like “Ain’t No Law” (featuring Anna Waronker) and “Meathead,” a porch-recorded demo with cars in the background. Its bathroom mirror selfie cover perfectly reflects the album’s intimate glimpse into Edwards’s creative brilliance — raw, unpolished, and unconstrained, yet unwavering in its songwriting quality.

Some things take a long time. And some things are meant to last. But how you know that, or learn how to find out, that’s a more intangible thing. That’s A Shaw Deal intangible. A communal meeting place for two old friends and their different musics.
A Shaw Deal is the first album by Geologist and D.S. . They go back a long ways back before Highlife, before Shaw joined White Magic back to the early childhood of Animal Collective. Basically, Doug Shaw touched down in NYC around 2003, and he and Brian Weitz have been friends ever since.
“D.S.” first released his own music under the moniker Highlife on 2010’s “Best Bless” EP. Listeners were lifted by the sound a vital new transmission imbued by the popular African guitar music, British folk-pop, desert blues and the ritual spirit energy that Doug had been evoking in White Magic with Mira Billotte. If you really know Doug, this incredible alchemy was just one of the amazing ways he could come through on the guitar and you probably also know that all his crazy shit is just massed up somewhere, ready to fill up a great album of his own.
A couple years back, Doug was posting bits of his playing on Instagram, and Brian found them to be a much-needed escape from reality he’d just let them loop for stretches of time, get lost in there, and emerge with recharged energies. He was so inspired by these mini-encapsulations of Doug’s spirit that eventually he ran them through his modular system, editing and tweaking and looping as he went, creating new shapes and juxtapositions, instinctively rewiring the sounds to extend the feeling of peace they’d given him. Once it was all together, it would make a cool birthday present to regift to Doug! And once the gift was given, it was sounding like an album too From start to finish, A Shaw Deal taps into D.S.’s guitar playing and the vibe of his expression, drawing out meditative waves in new forms while exploring the worlds within them. Geologist and D.S. collaborate in a manner that’s brought comfort and release to them both. A Shaw Deal leaves no doubt, as it radiates further into the world and beyond it will bring a new range of views and feels to everyone who listens in.
DOWNSTATE
Ready to go back? Prison Prison’s still out there, breaking rocks in the haze and rumbling in the heat, just wait- ing for you to come around.
Prison Prison’s been active since 2015, but if you didn’t catch ’em live in NYC, then you didn’t know until late in the summer of ’23, when Upstate dropped. THEN you knew! Prison hit HARD, with jams so long and varied, they hadta have two titles each and the album was only four songs long, one per side. Yeah, Upstate was heavy, but always the fun kind, you know? And there’s so many other kinds of heavy yet to be...
Downstate, the second official Prison stint, shows ya some, stretching to insane new places while pumping out MORE of some of the toughest jams around. Leap-hogging from one vibe to the next, Prison cop a variety of grooves, from minimalist (like Guru Guru), sweat-shaking (StoogesStooges) and chaotic (No Trend) it feels like they’re coming from everywhere! They switched it up in almost every way they could this time. But that’s just Prison being Prison

DON’T SEND PRISON TO THE UK/EU, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA & NZ — SEND ALL OTHER TERRITORIES, NO MATTER WHAT STATE THEY’RE IN
At its core, Prison Prison’s a multi-headed beast, and Downstate is built to showcase their swarming freakscene. Recording this one in Rockaway meant they could get Prison family and friends to drop in. Going Downstate with core Prisoners Sarim Al-Rawi, Matt Lilly and Paul Major are guitarists Marc Razo and Adam Reich, bassist Matt Leibowitz and Dave Smoota Smith on trombone (his first time ever in Prison!). Also present is the late, lamented Sam Jayne, a fellow lifer whose spirit will act as a guide for the rest of Prison’s time. All he brought to the session was a bottle of tequila. He just wanted to jam and on all borrowed shit too. He didn’t care.
With these many hands on deck, Prison plays all kinds of things, from insane distorted rock to dreamy psychedelia, plus some jazzy and gutsy blues shit too. They got some of the lighter side of Prison in there, of course in addition to screaming and slamming, you gotta laugh! It was all recorded in a day, with a couple overdubs, but it took a while to get the mixes right. There were a lot of moments that they didn’t know would lead to anything, but when listening back later, then they heard where they were going. All that had to get in there somehow. Plus, they had to get the drums and the reverb right!
Another level to the sound on Downstate is in the hard cuts and savvy fades in the edit (like Live-Evil!). Matt Lilly sequenced the mixes at home using two CDJs fed into a Numark DJ deck and dubbed down live to cassette, then they sent the tape to engineer Matt Walsh to duplicate timings and fades and all that. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by critical mass while you’re listening, this could be why! It’s for sure part of what makes these forty-three minutes of time give anyone who listens an entire night’s worth of dreams! Like trapdoors taking you from where you thought you were standing to someplace entirely different, wondering if what just happened was ten seconds or one million years long. And if you still don’t know man, it was both!
Next up? The Central Park Bandshell? Prison plays prison? Who knows? The sky’s the limit. But before all that, you gotta make it back from Downstate. They don’t make it easy...
FRECKLE FRECKLE
Street Date: January 31, 2025
That’s
When a Freckle pops up, that’s when you know that the sun has gotten through. Don’t let ’em tell you it’s skin damage — more like the sign of time well spent, as always, in the light. Freckle the band’s like that.
Freckle is, then, a Californian. Corey Madden, of Color Green, and Ty Segall. From the riff, there was a shared understanding about what they wanted. It made sense to shoot for writing things that weren’t personal — instead, taking ideas and vignettes, turning ’em into back stories and freaking out with the lyrics, making little movies.
Once they had a good batch of songs, it wasn’t long. They didn’t push too hard, they didn’t need to. As it came together, everything fell into place real natural-like.
Freckle is the hive mind of Corey Madden and Ty Segall. This LP reminds all of us that when the clouds are out you can still get sunburned.

OVERVIEW
EXPORTS • NO EXPLICIT CONTENT RELEASE DATE • 02.07.2024
Squid’s new album Cowards is about evil. Nine stories whose protagonists reckon with cults, charisma and apathy. Real and imagined characters wading into the dark ocean between right and wrong. Cowards is Squid’s most courageous album: simultaneously growing in scope and returning to basics. The English art-rock quintet recorded Cowards at Church Studios in Crouch End with Mercury prize winning producers Marta Salogni and Grace Banks. On additional production is longtime shifu and collaborator Dan Carey, who recorded the band’s first two albums. The record was mixed in Seattle by John McEntire, before being compressed by the rich analogue chain of Heba Kadry’s mastering.

The
Pains of Being Pure At Heart
“Perfect Right Now: A Slumberland Collection 2008-2010”
“The Pains
Label: Slumberland Records
Catalog Number: SLR 292
Street Date: February 7, 2025
The Pains exploded out of the late 00s Brooklyn indie scene with a bright, distinctive sound that paid tribute to everything from C86 to early Slumberland, Sarah and Creation label pop, but with a distinct American flavor drawn from groups like Smashing Pumpkins and The Exploding Hearts. Their 2009 self-titled debut is rightly considered a classic, and with Perfect Right Now we're thrilled to round out the story of The Pains' early years.
The ten tracks here compile the much-loved (and LONG out of print!) b-sides from the 7"s that accompanied that first album, the follow-up Higher Than The Stars EP, a couple of scarce tunes from split singles, and finally "Say No To Love," a spectacular tune that points the way forward to the band's next chapter. These are some proper lost classics, songs like "Kurt Cobain's Cardigan,” “Side Ponytail” and "The Pains of Being Pure at Heart" that still pack the dancefloors at indie discos from Göteborg to Glasgow and beyond. We couldn't be more excited to make them available again in this fine package that includes liner notes by the band’s Kip Berman and rarely-seen pictures from the group’s early days. Perfect right now indeed!

STREET DATE:
FEBRUARY 7, 2025
Here’s another one of those great early-‘90s glam metal albums that got lost in the grunge explosion. And because it came out in 1992, Capitol never bothered releasing it on vinyl in the U.S. So this one’s been a long time comin’…and as soon as you hear the opening cut “Hang On Lucy,” you know you’re in for a ride. Fans of Dokken, RATT, Skid Row, and Mötley Crüe will flip over Under the Influence…and lead vocalist Drew Hannah is in the grand tradition of Vince Neil et al. Trivia note one: Wildside ruled the Sunset Strip (and were the subject of a bidding war between Capitol and Polygram) under the name Young Gunns but was forced to change their name when Lionsgate Films came out with their Young Guns movie. Trivia note two: this was the first non-Van Halen record recorded at Eddie Van Halen’s 5150 home studio, engineered by famed Led Zeppelin producer Andy Johns! We’ve had this lost classic remastered for vinyl to make sure it pops…fire orange pressing housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket!

The Donnas: gold medal
(Gold Smoke Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 7, 2025
Famously formed in 8th grade for a school talent show, The Donnas began as a self-styled co-ed answer to The Ramones, playing gleefully unapologetic, pop-punk paeans to adolescent alienation and hedonism from a decidedly female perspective. But by the time of 2004’s Gold Medal, their sixth album and second for the major label Atlantic, the group has clearly—dare we say it?--matured. With the notable exception of the single (and career highlight) “Fall Behind Me,” Gold Medal marks a move away from the Donnas’ harder/faster ethos towards a more polished (acoustic guitars…whaaat?) pop sound veering towards ‘70s psychedelia under the helm of Avril Lavigne producer Butch Walker. And you can tell it from the album’s graphics, which flash vintage, Peter Max-esque squiggles on the front cover and feature a faux black light poster inside (which we have reproduced for this reissue along with the original printed inner sleeve). The result was an album that lead vocalist Brett Anderson a.k.a Donna A. deems her favorite, and one that stands as probably the most underrated album in the band’s fabulous catalog (most of which we have recently released here at Real Gone Music). Our reissue comes in gold smoke vinyl…an overlooked early-oughties gem!

It’s a tough call which is the bigger cult classic, the Tank Girl movie or its accompanying soundtrack, but on balance, we’d have to go for the soundtrack. Yeah, the film had a cast composed of some of the most colorful characters (Iggy Pop, Ann Magnuson) and character actors (Malcolm McDowell, Ice-T, and of course the almighty Lori Petty!) in show biz. And, its dystopic, resource-starved desert setting, intense action sequences, and lead female character mark it as a feminist (albeit funnier) precursor to Mad Max: Fury Road. But check out the soundtrack’s bona-fides: assembled by Courtney Love herself, it features a Who’s Who of ‘90s female rock including Hole, Björk, L7, Veruca Salt, and Belly among others. Plus, it even has tracks that were exclusive to its release, like a unique version of Devo’s “Girl U Want,” “Mockingbird Girl” by The Magnificent Bastards (a side project of the late Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots), and a duet of “Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love” between Joan Jett and The Replacements’ Paul Westerberg. In short, if there ever was a score that needs to be on wax, this would be it. Described by Rolling Stone magazine as “a glam rock triumph,” the multi-faceted rocker Gyasi (Jah-See) delivers his second studio album, “Here Comes The Good Part,” a glittery and fun universe filled with infectious hooks and searing guitar riffs, alongside songs of self-transformation. Teaming up with co-producer Bobby Holland, Gyasi expands his sound, exploring a wider palette of musical ideas. Mostly recorded with his touring band, it also features guest appearances by drummer Daru Jones. “Here Comes The Good Part” is a bold exploration of theatrical rock n’ roll, through the lens of a small-town West Virginia kid seeking self-discovery.

This new collection brings together classic radio sessions from Television Personalities, the masters of DIY post-punk and indie pop. Featuring two 80s BBC sessions that aired on John Peel and Andy Kershaw, along with a super rare 1992 WMBR set, this double LP features covers of Buzzcocks, The Raincoats and Daniel Johnston with previously unreleased songs and a bonus download WFMU session from 1993.
“Catchy hooks and schoolboy wit are in abundant supply.” Pitchfork
The Television Personalities’ splendid DIY skills and loveable ramshackle persona led them on many a subversive trip both on record and playing live. But it was the radio that first introduced them to the world in a whirlwind of repeated spins. John Peel let outsiders everywhere tune in to their altered world. And, at the height of punk they parodied the new revolution, their single ‘Part Time Punks’ becoming a Peel staple, and the clamour to hear more eventually resulting in a session in 1980.
Through the 80s, Daniel Treacy had matured into a gifted storyteller turned pop culture narrator who placed the modern world in his own hazy shade of focus. His songs were loveable, immediately identifiable and pin prick sharp; they were tidily observational, and often magically acute. This was a gifted raconteur, an inspiration and an essential alternative to the hiss and flutter of “normal” radio, a medium that by the late 80s had just about abandoned them.
‘Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out’ captures this pilgrim’s progress to pop nirvana, a psychedelic wonderland shaded by dark and brooding memories, all played out through a crackling transistor radio secreted under the pillow so that these sketches of society remain perfectly personal, a direct line into Dan’s psyche.

In the summer of 2021, Brighton-based, Scottish-Thai songwriter Helen Ganya’s grandmother passed away. The grief hit the artist hard, not only because it marked the loss of her last remaining grandparent, but also because it felt like her links to being half-Thai were disintegrating. Ganya grew up in Singapore, but spent her summers in the northeast of Thailand where her mum’s side of the family is from, visiting her grandmother. Where would all those memories go now that the person at the centre of them was gone? What was her relationship to this place without that glue? And so, in an attempt to process it all, Ganya began to write. “I got my diary and wrote every single memory of my time as a child in Thailand, spending time with her, my grandad, my aunts and cousins and everything,” she explains, “I had these snapshots of memories that I just wrote down because I just suddenly panicked: it was like, who am I, then?”
It was for this reason that, while Helen Ganya was waiting for her acclaimed 2022 album, polish the machine, to come out, she was already working on what would become her arresting new record, Share Your Care. Ganya has been releasing music since 2015 (formerly under the moniker Dog in the Snow). In the records she’s put out over the years, she’s shown a proclivity towards dark and artful rock and off-kilter sounds, garnering praise from the likes of the Sunday Times, Uncut, Clash, Loud & Quiet and more. But Share Your Care marks a new era, building on Ganya’s past sonic worlds and interspersing them with traditional Thai instrumentation, resulting in a plush, luminous, psych-tinged affair that is full of feeling.
Previously, Ganya had been hesitant to draw on her heritage in her music, somewhat wary of the orientalising gaze of the west. But after a dream about her late grandmother laid the foundations for what would become the track ‘Horizon’, Ganya realised she didn’t want to curtail herself either. She began to piece together a series of new songs at home, enjoying the catharsis of the process, using the MIDI as a temporary means of conveying the timbre of Thai instruments, before bringing those early incarnations to her frequent co-producer Rob Flynn. The pair went to Buddhapadipa Temple – the Thai Buddhist temple in Wimbledon –where they met instrumentalist Artit Phonron, who could play ranat ek, saw duang and khim, and later worked with Chinnathip Poollap, a musician in Thailand who could play the Thai oboe or “pi”; both would contribute to Share Your Care. She also called on Anglo-Thai artist John ‘Rittipo’ Moore to perform flutes and saxophone on the album.
The result is a triumphant, abundant record, teeming with heart and cinematic warmth. The title track is one of the first Ganya worked on, melding her own style with those Thai sounds. The celebratory song is based on her memory of following the elder women in her family – her mother, her aunts, her late grandmother –to go and visit her granddad's grave, bringing offerings (the video directed by Am Picha, features a similar storyline). “It felt like quite a magical journey to go down the trail to find him again,” she says, “It’s just trying to get that sense of honouring your ancestors and still feeling that they’re there. Sharing your grief, sharing your care, not forgetting them; bringing them food and water.” In general, following on from the themes of her last album, it’s another reminder of Ganya’s philosophy: “I think the way we live in modern society is very individualistic, and can be very lonely,” she muses, “For me, community and collective responsibility are the best way to be in a society.”
Elsewhere on the release, the floaty, glossiness of the khim flies through ‘Fortune’, a track for Ganya’s mum (“for all the diasporic mums out there”, she quips), thinking about the sacrifices so many Asian mums make and giving value, appreciation and recognition to them. On ‘Chaiyo!’, she remembers her granddad watching Thai boxing on the TV, shouting “chaiyo!” – literally “hooray” or “cheers” – and uses the memory to consider reincarnation and the family members she never knew. ‘Barn Nork’ – a phrase used to describe outsiders, something which her Thai family have sometimes called her – is the only Thai-sung track on the album, and is a tongue-in-cheek embracing of what Ganya laughingly describes as being “a noob”. For the closing track, ‘Myna’, British-Nigerian musician Tony Njoku joins her to perform the part of her late grandfather, with sparse but powerful lines like “How did you live the way you did?” – a reminder of conversations left too late, and the grief that shaped this record.
But out of endings can come new beginnings. Woven through with plaintive sadness and verdant rushes of euphoria, on the kaleidoscopic Share Your Care, Helen Ganya is singing of the losses of people and places, of our movement and our ancestry; but in doing so, encourages us to embrace life and hold one another through it all.

Trumpeter, bandleader and composer Matthew Halsall announces landmark new album An Ever Changing View, an expansive, immaculately conceived project which presents Halsall’s signature blend of jazz, electronica, global and spiritual jazz influences.
Halsall who has been hailed as one of the leading figures of the UK jazz renaissance has never seen himself as part of any one sound or scene: he builds his own sonic universe instead. An Ever Changing View finds him at his most experimental yet, once again expanding his sound and production techniques to create his unique brand of deeply meditative music.
During the album's creation, he was staying in both a beautiful architect’s house with breath-taking sea views and a striking modernist house, where he composed what he saw “like a landscape painting”. In these new environments, Halsall wanted to capture “the feeling of openness and escapism” and to approach making music again from scratch. “I hit the reset button and wanted to have complete musical freedom,” he says. “It was a real exploration of sound.”
It was hearing jazz on the dancefloor as a teenager that first opened up new possibilities in Halsall’s mind and his music has long drawn on his love for the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders and contemporary electronica from the likes of Warp Records and Ninja Tune. An Ever Changing View melds those forms in a way that feels heady and, at times, even otherworldly. One of the album’s starting points was Halsall’s ever-expanding box of percussion, from congas and kalimba to various clusters of seeds, bells and chimes, which he sampled and looped to use as a foundation for the songs – a first for him and his band. Elevating, charming, totally modern jazz tracks jostle with deft warm magic realism; and laid back grooves with hand percussion, deep bass and the gorgeous glisten of the Fender Rhodes meet hip-hop beats. Halsall himself sparkles, illuminating his beautiful tapestries of sound with lithe, glistening elegiac trumpet
An Ever Changing View comes in a package as striking as the music, with handmade fonts designed by Ian Anderson of The Designers Republic and the specially commissioned tapestry by artist Sara Kelly is a stunning and harmonious complement to the record's sound.

By the late 90s the independent music scene in San Diego, CA had become synonymous with noisy, post-hardcore bands that were pushing the boundaries of what it meant to be punk. Camera Obscura were one of those bands. They cut their teeth on the angular and abrasive sounds of Antioch Arrow, Clickatat Ikatowi, and Heroin, and incorporated synths and electronics to create their own dark, jarring, experimental rock sound.
The band’s musical output was sparse. In addition to two 45s, the band released their only LP, To Change the Shape of an Envelope in 2000 on Troubleman Unlimited. The album runs the gamut sonically with dark, high energy songs like “Twenty-Five Diamonds” and “Sarasota”, the early industrial sound of “Something About a Nightmare”, and the shoegaze influenced “Cinematheque”.
In October of 2024, the band announced a partnership with Solid Brass records to begin work on reissuing t heir long out of print album. To Change the Shape of an Envelope has been completely remastered by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Mastering wit h new artwork by Sonny Kay (The VSS, GSL Records).
To Change the Shape of an Envelope will be available digitally for t he first time ever as well as on limited edition transparent red or opaque white vinyl on 2/7/25 from Solid Brass Records.

GUS ENGLEHORN Death & Transfiguration
2025 Reissue
While his journey on this terrestrial plane has taken him from his native Alaska to Utah to Québec to Portland to his current home (for the next five minutes at least), in Hawaii, Gus Englehorn is ultimately a citizen of Planet Gus, an uncanny universe created through a big-bang collision between serene beauty and apocalyptic chaos, populated by folkloric heroes, creepy characters, and oversized insects alike. A critically acclaimed indie-rock singer-songwriter, he spent much of his life as a professional snowboarder, but always dreamed of writing songs. Accompanied by his wife Estée Preda, his key collaborator with whom he produces his albums and creates music videos, his approach is visceral, subconscious and much like his snowboarding career, risk taking and unapologetic.
When he finally emerged — first on 2020’s Death & Transfiguration — he had found a sound that was dark and delightful, fun and demented, packed with dynamics and the chug of a hysterical guitar. Dungeon Master, Gus Englehorn’s Secret City Records debut, is an outsider opus — a playful juxtaposition of isolation, alienation and mildish OCD. The album was praised by critics: “This is hitting in a weird way,” enthused renowned critic Anthony Fantano from The Needle Drop, while American magazine Under the Radar stated that the opus was “a fascinating dose of outsider indie rock, carried by Englehorn’s yelping vocals, gleefully offbeat songwriting, and darting melodies. [A] fantastically weird […] record.” Gus has performed at SXSW (USA), The Great Escape (UK), Reeperbahn (DE), Festival MaMA (France), M for Montreal, and more in recent years.
